REX PRESTON
Rex spends most of his time in Derbyshire, where the contrasts of the Peak District provide him with endless inspiration in all seasons whatever the weather. For well over fifty years, Rex has enjoyed painting outside directly from the subject and around half of the paintings in this exhibition are painted en plein air.
Time spent each year in the Lake District, Norfolk and Cornwall, either painting on location or walking and sketching help him to gain a familiarity with the landscape he loves.
“The unusually fine weather throughout the spring and summer of 2025 allowed me to make the most of every painting trip. I am always drawn to Newlyn with its busy harbour and mass of brightly coloured boats, but in contrast I love to paint the reflected light in a quiet muddy creek in Thornham, Norfolk. Painting in the studio is equally important to me, using my pencil sketches, memory and experience to experiment and simplify the landscape, making the most of the colour, light and texture”
