MARTIN LLEWELLYN
Martin Llewellyn, born in Neath, South Wales, in 1963, is a self - taught painter whose career now spans more than twenty‑five years. He began painting in watercolour, but over time he moved to oils, where he found the medium that best suited his instinctive, tactile approach. His paintings are instantly recognisable for their confident use of the palette knife, their restrained colour harmonies, and the textured surfaces that have become central to his style.
Llewellyn continues to live in South Wales, and the landscape around him remains his inspiration. Martin remarks ‘ Walking the mountains, lakes and the rugged coastline of, North Wales, Pembrokeshire and Gower has enabled me to capture the mood, atmosphere and the emotional character of the land and seascapes’ .
The mountains of Snowdonia, with their shifting light and dramatic silhouettes, form the backbone of his work, while the coastline of Anglesey and North Wales provides an equally rich source of subject matter.
The influence of Sir Kyffin Williams, a defining figure for many Welsh painters of Llewellyn’s generation, can be felt in his work. Yet Llewellyn’s technique is distinctly his own: his palette‑knife marks are finer, more deliberate, and often applied on a more intimate scale. His artistic sensibility also reflects the legacy of painters such as Charles Wyatt Warren and Gwilym Prichard.
His paintings are known for their rich textures and muted, atmospheric palette—qualities that allow him to capture the character of Wales with clarity and restraint. Whether he is depicting the peaks of Snowdonia or the force of the Irish Sea breaking against the shores of Anglesey, his work stands as an enduring response to the landscapes that continue to inspire him.
Martin’s work remains highly sought after and can be found in many private collections worldwide.
