CATRIONA MILLAR

Catriona Millar

Catriona Millar’s paintings have an uncanny way of speaking directly to the viewer, no matter their age or artistic background. Her bold, figurative oil works are instantly recognisable: richly textured surfaces built with a palette knife, characters whose stylised features feel both familiar and dreamlike, and colours that hum with emotional undercurrents. At the heart of each piece lies a story. Millar’s subjects carry a quiet narrative in their eyes–glimmers of longing, melancholy, resilience, or joy–inviting viewers to imagine the inner worlds they inhabit. Often accompanied by animal companions that appear either physically present or symbolically charged, her figures exist in a space where the real and the talismanic gently intertwine.

Born in Glasgow and trained at Harrogate School of Art and Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Millar has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most distinctive figurative painters. Since her sellout degree show in 2005, she has exhibited widely, including at the Royal Scottish Academy, and her work now appears in private and public collections across Europe, the Far East, Australia, and America. Living and working in the south east of England, she continues to create paintings that are colourful, beguiling, and deeply human–works that celebrate the stories we share, the connections we forge, and the imaginative worlds that shape who we are.

Helen Tabor

Scottish Borders based painter, Helen Tabor, creates richly textured oil paintings that balance spontaneity with subtle refinement. Beginning with a collage base, she builds her surfaces through bold, energetic brushwork that gradually settles into luminous landscapes, still life and figurative scenes. Influenced by the shifting light and layered horizons of southern Scotland, as well as by artists such as William McTaggart, Joan Eardley and Picasso, Tabor works in a state she describes as meditative and elevated, allowing colour, movement and atmosphere to emerge organically. Her paintings often hover between abstraction and definition, inviting forms, figures and narratives to surface almost of their own accord.

For Tabor, the act of painting is a dialogue between intention and discovery. She responds instinctively to the textures beneath her brush, the fluidity of branches against a hazy sky, or the curve of a bath that becomes a stage for quiet drama. Figures may appear as if summoned by the painting itself, their stories left deliberately open for viewers to interpret through their own memories and emotions. This interplay between control and surrender, clarity and ambiguity, is central to her work. Each painting becomes a space of possibility, where atmosphere, pattern and colour coalesce into images that feel both deeply personal and invitingly universal.
