Welcome to the Calgary White Hat Awards! For more than six decades, Calgary has recognized excellence in customer service provided by tourism and hospitality employees from across the city. Being awarded a white hat is more than a symbol. It’s a salute to leadership, excellence, and the genuine spirit of hospitality that defines our community.
Our industry is strong – since the pandemic, Alberta’s tourism sector has rebounded and grown more quickly than any other province in the country – and we are on a trajectory for continued growth. You, the folks in heart of house and front of house, are critical to that success.

Volunteers
At the heart of the Calgary White Hat Awards is a team of volunteers who give freely of their time and talent to assist with this event. More than 250 volunteers, from all areas of the community, collectively supported the search for this year’s top service performers in Calgary. Whether interviewing nominees, serving on the Calgary White Hat Awards committee, or assisting at the gala awards night, the dedication of our volunteers adds tremendous value and prestige to this widely recognized awards program. Tourism Calgary extends sincere thanks for the countless hours contributed by our dedicated volunteers. Your passion and commitment to service excellence and our industry is greatly appreciated.
Selection process
Since 1962, Calgary has been home to one of the most unique tributes to outstanding customer service – the Calgary White Hat Awards. Presented to tourism and hospitality industry employees who offer outstanding customer service, the awards honour individuals who have excelled in leadership and performance in 19 different categories.
More than 900 nominations were received throughout 2024, submitted by co-workers, managers, or supervisors of individuals in the service industry who have direct, daily contact with visitors and guests.
Once all the submissions are received, nominees are invited to interview with industry professionals who evaluate the candidates according to a pre-established grading system. Nominees are assessed on their enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication to the tourism and hospitality industries.
Final scores are tabulated and then reviewed by members of the Calgary White Hat Awards selection committee. Three finalists are identified in each category and one individual is selected as the recipient of the coveted White Hat. Category recipients are determined by the interview results and are chosen at the discretion of the selection committee.
All efforts are made to recognize the most qualified, friendly, and committed individuals that make Calgary such a great place to live, work, play and visit.
