On behalf of my fellow Council members, it is my pleasure to congratulate all the nominees and award winners at tonight’s Calgary White Hat Awards.

Message from the Mayor of Calgary

On behalf of my fellow Council members, it is my pleasure to congratulate all the nominees and award winners at tonight’s Calgary White Hat Awards. Every great city earns its reputation through the experiences it creates and the way it makes people feel when they are there. It is what people remember about a place, and a key factor in their decision to return, whether as a visitor or a future resident. I am proud to say that Calgary’s reputation is one of welcome, warmth, and hospitality; one that has been earned because of the remarkable people who work on the frontline of tourism and call this city home.

Every great city earns its reputation through the experiences it creates and the way it makes people feel when they are there. It is what people remember about a place, and a key factor in their decision to return, whether as a visitor or a future resident. I am proud to say that Calgary’s reputation is one of welcome, warmth, and hospitality; one that has been earned because of the remarkable people who work on the frontline of tourism and call this city home.

It is also how we, as Calgarians, define ourselves. We are a community that helps, that supports one another, and that celebrates and embraces diversity. We are a city that surprises people with our growing, culturally rich, and genuinely friendly city that defies expectations. That is what the Blue Sky City is all about: a place where everyone is welcome to gather under the same open sky. It is a city I am proud to be a part of, and a city I am proud to lead.

The individuals being honoured tonight are Calgary’s ambassadors in the truest sense. They embody the very best of who we are as a city.

The Awards have been celebrated in Calgary for more than 63 years, and as one of the largest recognition programs of its kind in the country, they reflect the strong service and hospitality culture in Canada.

These awards celebrate the people who bring our destination to life as exceptional hosts, delivering the warm, western hospitality for which Calgary is renowned. Every one of you who commits to excellence helps define who we are as a city, and the unique experience visitors have when they come here.

Calgary has set a bold vision to double visitor spend to $6B by 2035. Achieving this will depend on incredible people who bring professionalism, pride, and care to their work every day. People like you, who are helping to grow our industry and shape the destination we are becoming.

Selection process

Since 1962, Calgary has been home to one of the most unique tributes to outstanding customer service – the Calgary White Hat Awards. Presented to tourism and hospitality industry employees who offer outstanding customer service, the awards honour individuals who have excelled in leadership and performance in 19 different categories.

More than 1,000 nominations were received throughout 2025, submitted by co-workers, managers, or supervisors of individuals in the service industry who have direct, daily contact with visitors and guests.

Once all the submissions are received, nominees are invited to interview with industry professionals who evaluate the candidates according to a pre-established grading system.

Final scores are tabulated and then reviewed by members of the Calgary White Hat Awards selection committee. Three finalists are identified in each category and one individual is selected as the recipient of the coveted White Hat. Category recipients are determined by the interview results and are chosen at the discretion of the selection committee.

All efforts are made to recognize the most qualified, friendly, and committed individuals that make Calgary such a great place to live, work, play and visit.
