Overview The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) is the national professional association that represents landscape architects in Canada. The mandate of the CSLA is to represent our members nationally and internationally, to coordinate items of common interest, and to inform and educate members in the interest of the profession and the public it serves. CSLA is a member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), a professional organization that represents landscape architects internationally.

COMPONENT ASSOCIATIONS CSLA is a federation of component associations. The component associations include: • Alberta Association of Landscape Architects (AALA) • Atlantic Provinces Association of Landscape Architects (APALA) • L’Association des Architectes Paysagistes du Québec (AAPQ) • Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects (MALA) • Northwest Territories Association of Landscape Architects (NWTALA) • Nunavut Association of Landscape Architects (NUALA) • Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) • The Saskatchewan Association of Landscape Architects (SALA)

CSLA BOARD OF GOVERNORS The Board of Governors is responsible for carrying out the mandate of the CSLA. This board includes a President, President-elect, an Executive Director and one representative from each of the component associations.

Landscape Architects Landscape architecture is the profession concerned with analysis, design, planning, management and rehabilitation of the land. Landscape architects integrate and apply knowledge of ecology, sociocultural factors, economics and aesthetics to create environments that are functional, innovative, appropriate and attractive. The skill of landscape architects is visible all around us in the beauty and usefulness of our parks, gardens, urban plazas, streets, neighbourhoods, and communities. Across Canada, in our urban, suburban, rural, and natural areas, landscape architects play a central role in shaping the land. Landscape architects provide services that include landscape assessment, feasibility studies, design programming, site planning, master planning, land development planning, site design, project management, and construction administration. Areas in which landscape architects specialize include neighbourhood and community design, urban design, park and recreation planning, transportation planning, golf course and resort design, campus planning and design, regional planning, landscape reclamation and restoration, heritage conservation, garden design, therapeutic design, and design for special user needs. The scope and services of landscape architectural practice are continuously expanding. From small properties to large development sites, private and public sector clients increasingly seek the expertise of landscape architects to ensure creative, sensitive, and efficient use of their land.

AALA Code of Ethics The Alberta Association of Landscape Architects, its member, and affiliates, herein present a policy governing professional conduct. The ethics of the professional activity of all landscape architects are essentially those covering all professions and businesses. The intent of this Code of Ethics is to provide a more definite guide in maintaining the standards and the consequent service of the profession, in the interest of the general public.

CONDUCT 1. A landscape architect must conduct themself in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner. DUTY TO PUBLIC 2. A landscape architect must consider the health, safety, and welfare of the members of the public who will use the landscape architect’s products and designs.

DUTY TO CLIENTS AND EMPLOYERS 3. A landscape architect must provide a professional level of service their clients and employers. DUTY TO CONSIDER ENVIRONMENT 4. A landscape architect must consider the stewardship, protection, preservation, and enhancement of the natural environment.

COMPETENCE 5. A landscape architect must undertake only such professional work that the landscape architect is competent to perform by virtue of their training and experience.

CONTINUING EDUCATION 6. A landscape architect must maintain and upgrade the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their professional work.

CONFLICT 7. A landscape architect must not place themself in a conflict of interest with their client or employer, and must disclose to the client or employer any situation where a conflict of interest exists or may arise.

CONFIDENTIALITY 8. A landscape architect must hold in confidence information obtained during the course

of their work unless disclosure is permitted by the client or required by the Act, any other enactment, or by order of a court.

INTEGRITY OF THE PROFESSION 9. A landscape architect must refrain from engaging in any practices that detract from the professional image of the Association or its members.

Education & Accreditation EDUCATION Landscape architects prepare for their professional role through completion of a degree in landscape architecture. Both Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) professional degree programs are offered in Canadian universities. All professional programs require courses in technical subjects, such as design, site engineering, plant materials, and construction methods, as well as courses in the arts, sciences, and humanities.

CAREER The demand for landscape architects is increasing rapidly in North America and career opportunities are expanding accordingly. In the private sector, landscape architects own or are employed in consulting, multi-disciplinary, and design-build firms. A growing number of landscape architects are employed by resource-based industries, including forestry and aggregate resource management. The public sector employs landscape architects at the

federal, provincial, regional, and municipal levels where they provide expertise within parks and recreation, engineering, transportation, community development, and planning departments. Landscape architects are also employed by universities and colleges as professors, researchers, and administrators.

ACCREDITATION Accredited programs in landscape architecture in Canada are those that have met the standards of the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council (LAAC). These programs have been evaluated and found to provide the required instruction, faculty, facilities, and financial support to deliver a sound program as demanded by the profession and the public. Accreditation reviews take place every five years. Programs accredited by CSLA through LAAC are also recognized by the ASLA Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB). Similarly LAAC also recognizes program accredited by LAAB, a complete listing of which may be found on the ASLA website (www.asla.org).

President's Message: Turning the Corner Together Dear Members, It is an absolute privilege to connect with you in the 2026 AALA Member Directory. This is a defining moment for the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects—a period filled with immense momentum, profound transformation, and a clear, shared vision for our collective future. As I look at the incredible dedication of our board, staff, and volunteers, I can confidently say that we are turning a corner as an organization, and there has never been a more exciting or meaningful time to be a member of the AALA.

PREPARING FOR THE PROFESSIONAL GOVERNANCE ACT Our most significant strategic undertaking continues to be our deliberate preparation for the full adoption of the Professional Governance Act. This transition represents a rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity to modernize our framework and ensure our governance is robust, compliant, and future-proof. We are actively executing vital modernization efforts across all levels of the association, which include: • Updating and modernizing our foundational regulations to align cleanly with the Act's modernized standards. • Restructuring our internal bylaws and policy structures to reinforce public trust and strengthen our regulatory tools. • Evolving our oversight models to be more inclusive, transparent, and responsive to the needs of our members.

CSLA Code of Ethics The Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) is a membership based organization. The membership is comprised of regular members, life members, and honorary members as specified in the bylaws. The majority of members are individuals who are active in the profession of landscape architecture. It is important for all members that the landscape architect profession be seen by the public to be a profession which is trustworthy, is a positive advocate for environmental sustainability, and healthy communities. It is for these reasons that this code of professional practice has been developed to outline the expectations of professional conduct by members.

The respect afforded a profession is earned through the conduct of individual members of the profession. It is difficult to codify all elements that members should observe to meet the necessary level of professional conduct. However, it is the general expectation that members will strive to do what is right for the protection of the integrity, image, and good reputation of the profession of landscape architecture. The following provides the principles which members are expected to honour in creating a positive view of the profession by the public and clients.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES • A member is expected to conduct their business or their employment as a landscape architect in a manner which is honest, legal, and which demonstrates financial propriety, and sound business practices. • A member is expected to only undertake assignments which are within their capability and competence. • A member is expected to maintain their professional knowledge in the field through demonstrated ongoing learning. • A member is expected to familiarize themself with the CSLA’s guiding documents and governance.

WORKING RESPECTFULLY WITH OTHERS • A member is expected to be respectful of the roles, efforts, and opinions of others, and work positively with others involved in a project or engaged by a client. • A member is expected to work without conflict of interest in an assignment and to be transparent with respect to real or perceived competing demands or interests. • A member is expected to show respect for the work of other landscape architects, and advise and consult as appropriate when approached by a client where work was undertaken by another landscape architect. • A member is expected to handle concerns relating to another member’s work in a dignified manner respecting the other member’s reputation and that of the profession, and follow an appropriate process to express concerns.

WORKING IN RESPECT OF THE PROFESSION • A member is expected not accept work which contravenes the principles and integrity of landscape architecture. • A member is expected conduct themself in such a manner that does not impair or cause damage to the reputation of the profession. In accepting membership to CSLA, all individuals agree to abide by this Code of Professional Conduct. This code is administered by the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.

CSLA Board of Directors’ Report As I wrap up my two-year term on the Board this coming fall and prepare to pass the torch to Matt Sloan, I find myself reflecting on what has been a truly rewarding experience, and I’m pleased to share a few highlights from the past year.

NATIONAL COLLABORATION AND SUPPORT It is both a challenging and exciting time to be a landscape architect in Canada. While we continue to navigate issues of professional recognition, evolving governance models, and the need for stronger advocacy, we do so as a connected and engaged national community. The CSLA continues to strengthen its role as a national voice, with a focus on supporting component associations - operationally, through advocacy, and in navigating changes driven by Professional Governance Acts in several jurisdictions, including Alberta. Key areas of focus include: • Refining their governance structure to better support all component organizations • Exploring new membership models in response to evolving regulatory requirements, as well as service agreements to provide operational and administrative support • Strengthening national coordination while accommodating regional differences

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TRANSITION This fall marks an important leadership transition with the retirement of Michelle Legault. Michelle’s contributions have been foundational strengthening governance, building organizational capacity, and elevating the national profile of the CSLA. Her leadership has positioned the organization well for its next chapter. A sincere thank you to Michelle for her lasting impact on landscape architecture across Canada!

ADVOCACY AND PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION Advocacy continues to grow in both importance and activity across the country. Efforts at national, provincial, and municipal levels are increasingly aligned - elevating the role of landscape architects in climate, infrastructure, and community-building, while reinforcing the value of urban design and public space as essential to livability. At the same time, challenges related to professional recognition, scope, and fee equity persist. Addressing these will remain a priority, requiring sustained engagement with government, allied professions, and the public. Building on the State of the Profession of Landscape Architecture in Canada (2024) and the Compensation & Benefits Study (2024), the CSLA is initiating a new study to better understand barriers to fee alignment with peer disciplines - and the impacts on practice sustainability, procurement, and compensation. This work will begin this fall and conclude in 2027.

CLIMATE LEADERSHIP The CSLA continues to demonstrate leadership in climate adaptation through the landADAPT program. Delivered over a three-year partnership with the Climate Risk Institute, the program has included a national webinar series, an expanding library of case studies, and an online professional development course - launching this fall. Together, these initiatives are strengthening practitioner capacity and reinforcing the role of landscape architects in climate-responsive design. In parallel, the CSLA has released Making the Case: Landscape Architects as Infrastructure Leaders in Canada, positioning the profession as essential to addressing federal priorities in housing, mobility, and climate resilience. Through Canadian case studies, the brief highlights the value of nature-based solutions, systems thinking, and early landscape architectural involvement in delivering more livable, sustainable, and resilient communities.

LOOKING AHEAD Key priorities for the year ahead include: • Executive leadership transition this fall • 2027 CSLA Congress in Calgary, in partnership with AALA • Continued support for components navigating governance change • Strengthened advocacy efforts across all regions • Preparation for the CSLA’s 100th Anniversary

CALL TO ACTION There are several meaningful ways for AALA members to contribute: 2027 CSLA Congress (Calgary): Get involved - support planning, volunteer, present, and attend! College of Fellows – KEEP Program: Alberta-based Members of the CSLA’s College of Fellows are encouraged to participate in the KEEP (Knowledge and Experience Exchange and Partnership) Program, supporting mentorship and knowledge-sharing. Mentorship Moments – Landscapes/Paysages: Consider submitting a Mentorship Moment. This growing initiative provides valuable insights for practitioners at all stages of their careers. This year has reinforced - for me - the strength and commitment of the landscape architecture community across Canada. Through my time on the Board, I’ve seen firsthand how collaboration and leadership across the country continue to advance the profession. It has been a privilege to represent Alberta at the national level, and I look forward to seeing the continued evolution of the CSLA in the years ahead. Andrea Kennedy - CSLA Director

CSLA Fellows Fellows of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects are those who have been members for at least 12 years and are recognized by their peers as having made an outstanding contribution to the profession through excellence in one or more of the following: • Executed works • Administrative professional work in public agencies • Professional university instruction • Professional writing • Service to the community or the public • Direct service to the CSLA Fellows of the CSLA have taken a leadership role in many professional activities and organizations that advance the cause of the profession of landscape architecture. BLA/MLA SCHOLARSHIP The AALA is pleased to provide an annual scholarship (up to $2,000) to an Alberta Resident that is attending any Accredited BLA/MLA Program. Available to a student from Alberta, who is a member in good standing with the AALA and is attending any recognized BLA/MLA program based on academic achievement and portfolio quality.

LIFE MEMBER An AALA Life Member is a member of the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of Landscape Architecture. The Board may designate outstanding Members as Life Members of the Association, with special privileges including a waiver from annual fees, subject to maintaining exemplary conduct and the following criteria: the Member has been a Member in good standing of AALA for 25 years or, the Member has been engaged in the full-time practice of landscape architecture for 25 years.

LACF-FAPC Scholarships in Alberta Three regional scholarships exist in Alberta. Two of them are dedicated to students enrolled in the newly accredited program of landscape architecture, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) at the University of Calgary and the other, to students graduating from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and intending to pursue further studies in landscape architecture.

LACF University of Calgary MLA The endowment fund for this scholarship was initiated by the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects (AALA) and representatives of the landscape architecture program at the University of Calgary under the auspices of LACF in 2016. The scholarship is intended for a deserving student enrolled in the MLA program, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at University of Calgary. This program received accreditation in 2018, making it the newest school of landscape architecture in Canada. The inaugural scholarship was awarded in 2019.

CRITERIA AND AWARD PROCESS The LACF/University of Calgary Scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually “to a student in either first or second year of the Master of Landscape Architecture program who demonstrates excellence in both design creativity and academic performance.” School faculty nominates a candidate who exemplifies the objectives of the scholarship in early November for approval by the LACF Board. The criteria are left purposefully general, trusting that the faculty of the schools know their students and can recognize achievement and potential. The scholarship is awarded towards the end of the Fall semester.

SUPPORT LACF is grateful to members of the CSLA, AALA,and University of Calgary communities who contributed to help establish this scholarship. This scholarship fund is not yet fully endowed and fundraising activities are ongoing. Thank you for your support.

Canadian Landscape Charter/ University of Calgary/ LACF Scholarship A scholarship for Masters students of landscape architecture at the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL), the Canadian Landscape Charter/ University of Calgary/ LACF Scholarship was initiated by Honorary CSLA Member Dr. Mary-Ellen Tyler, Professor and Interim Associate Dean (Planning + Landscape Architecture) at the SAPL in collaboration with the LACF and the CSLA.

CRITERIA AND AWARD PROCESS This annual scholarship of $3,000 annually will recognize a landscape architecture student at the University of Calgary whose work exemplifies the Charter principles and who will carry the spirit of the Charter forward into their future practice of landscape architecture. The CSLA Canadian Landscape Charter is the profession’s declaration to recognize, manage, protect, and celebrate Canada’s landscapes. School faculty nominates a candidate who exemplifies the objectives of the scholarship. The criteria are left purposefully general, trusting that the faculty of the schools know their students and can recognize achievement and potential. The scholarship is awarded during the fall semester. The inaugural scholarship was awarded in 2020.

Future fundraising efforts will aim to fully endow the fund.

LAFC Schwabenbauer/ NAIT Scholarship In 2018, with the consent of the Schwabenbauer family, LACF voted to restructure the existing Andre Schwabenbauer Scholarship established in 2006 into two distinct and fully endowed scholarships: LACFFAPC Andre Schwabenbauer/ University of Manitoba and the LACF-FAPC Andre Schwabenbauer/NAIT Scholarship. This $1,500 annual scholarship recognizes a graduating student of the Landscape Architecture Technology Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) who is enrolled in or accepted by an accredited program in landscape architecture in Canada or United States.

CRITERIA AND AWARD PROCESS Students are invited to apply. Guidelines, applications and schedules will be posted when available.
