On behalf of my City Council colleagues, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 60th anniversary of the Calgary White Hat Awards. In this milestone year, we are celebrating the return of the Awards and recognizing some outstanding ambassadors for our city.
After the challenges of the pandemic, the tourism sector worked incredibly hard to help the industry recover. Thank you for your resilience, determination, and your continued efforts to make Calgary an ultimate host city.
In 2022, Calgary welcomed 6.1 million visitors in a flurry of activity as travel resumed and restrictions were lifted. With major events, meetings and conventions returning, bringing delegates, domestic and international visitors to Calgary, you all rose to the occasion showcasing the best that Calgary has to offer.
Thank you to our frontline ambassadors who work at restaurants and hotels, attractions, convention venues, sport facilities, the airport, transportation companies, and in other critical roles. You are Calgary’s ultimate hosts welcoming visitors and creating lasting impressions. It’s your exceptional service that sets Calgary apart as the friendly, inclusive, exciting destination we want the world to see.

Calgary’s tourism sector, businesses and partners have shown tremendous passion, grit, and collaboration over the past few years. Together, we made it through a global pandemic, and we reignited the industry to bring visitors back to Calgary.
Frontline and heart of house employees went above and beyond during the pandemic, often wearing multiple hats to ensure guests felt welcome and safe. For this, we applaud you. Our city’s ultimate hosts consistently help create memorable experiences for visitors. Your ability to connect with guests, share your knowledge of the city, and provide outstanding service with a genuine smile, are what set Calgary’s reputation apart as a warm and welcoming destination.

The Awards
Since 1962, Calgary has been home to one of the most unique tributes to outstanding customer service – the Calgary White Hat Awards. Presented to tourism and hospitality industry employees who offer outstanding customer service, the awards honour individuals who have excelled in leadership and performance in 22 different categories.
Volunteers
At the heart of the Calgary White Hat Awards is a team of volunteers who give freely of their time and talent to assist with this event. More than 150 volunteers, from all areas of the community, collectively supported the search for this year’s top service performers in Calgary. Tourism Calgary extends sincere thanks for the countless hours contributed by our dedicated volunteers. Your passion and commitment to service excellence and our industry is greatly appreciated.
Selection process
More than 650 nominations were accepted throughout 2022, submitted by co-workers, managers or supervisors of individuals in the tourism and hospitality industry. These nominees distinguish themselves by promoting Calgary through exemplary customer service.
Once all the submissions are received, nominees are invited to interview with industry professionals who evaluate the candidates according to a pre-established grading system. Nominees are assessed on their enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication to our industry.
Final scores are tabulated and then reviewed by members of the Calgary White Hat Awards selection committee. Three finalists are identified in each category and one individual is selected and one individual is selected as the recipient of the coveted White Hat in each category. Recipients are determined by the interview results and are chosen at the discretion of the selection committee.
All efforts are made to recognize the most qualified, friendly, and committed individuals that make Calgary such a great place to live, work, play and visit.

Ken Lima-Coelho
Ken is a passionate storyteller and connector with over 25 years of experience in broadcasting, live performance, community-building and event strategy. A graduate of the University of Calgary in communications and the University of King’s College (Halifax) in journalism, he’s a familiar voice to Calgarians.
He is a well-known Master of Ceremonies, Moderator and Keynote Speaker for dozens of organizations including The Calgary Foundation, University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, Calgary Economic Development and the Calgary Stampede. Ken has received both The Calgary Award for Community Advocate - Individual from The City of Calgary and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.
Russell Broom
Russell Broom is a Calgary-based producer/guitarist/composer/ songwriter/engineer. He is known for his work with Jann Arden, producing the albums “Greatest Hurts”, “Love Is The Only Soldier”, “Jann Arden”, “Uncover Me” and most recently, the 2023 JUNO nominated “Descendant”.
Russell has performed and/or recorded with Jann Arden, Art Bergmann, Robbie Williams, Josh Groban, Jill Barber, Kyle McKearney, Jason McCoy, Brett Kissel, Mariel Buckley, Martin Page, Chip Taylor, Rhys Fulber, Iskwe, Mike Edel, Greg Godovitz, Jay Semko and many more.
Jenn Beaupré
Canadian Idol alum Jenn Beaupré is a Calgary-based singer/ songwriter and international vocal coach who has been sharing her big, powerful, and technically masterful voice across North America for some time. With the grit of Gaga, the attitude of Aretha and the old-soul maturity of Adele, Jenn is a captivating stage performer. Currently, you will find Jenn (AKA Rozette) all over TikTok and social media where she has a million followers across platforms.
In addition to her vivid and entertaining short form videos, she’s also digging up her soulful, piano-laden roots with her newest single, “Now”. It’ll slow dance it’s way into your heart and is available…now!
DJ Cosm
DJ Cosm fell in love with hip hop early in his childhood and witnessed his first rap concert (DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince) at age nine. In 1998 he began hosting his radio show Mental Illness (one of Western Canada’s longest running underground hip hop shows) which he still runs today.
He also began promoting concerts in the late 90s, bringing Canadian underground hip hop acts to a Calgary audience. He co-founded the group Dragon Fli Empire with Tarik Robinson aka Teekay in 2002.
