On behalf of my City Council colleagues, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 61st annual Calgary White Hat Awards.

In 2023, Calgary welcomed more than 8.4 million visitors having made a full recovery from the pandemic two years earlier than expected. With major events, meetings, and conventions returning, bringing delegates, domestic, and international visitors to Calgary, you all have worked hard and risen to the occasion showcasing the best that Calgary has to offer.

Tonight is about recognizing the dedication and excellence you show in your jobs every day to make a positive contribution in the promotion and reputation of Calgary. Thank you to our frontline ambassadors who work at restaurants and hotels, attractions, convention venues, sport facilities, the airport, transportation companies, and in other critical roles. You are at the heart of creating lasting impressions for visitors to Calgary. It is your exceptional service that sets Calgary apart as the friendly, inclusive, exciting destination we want the world to recognize.

Welcome to the Calgary White Hat Awards.

For over 60 years, Calgary has recognized excellence in customer service provided by tourism and hospitality industry employees from across the city. Receiving a coveted white hat, is the ultimate honour and a symbol of outstanding leadership and performance.

We couldn't be more proud of the significance of this event within our city. Coming out of the last few challenging years around the pandemic, our industry has shown it's character. Strong, resilient, adaptable - many of us have been called on to go above and beyond our regular course of duties. As demonstrated by the more than 800 nominations received in 2023, many of you answered that call.

Thank you for continuing to show your colleagues, our guests, and the world the superior level of service one can expect when visiting Calgary. It is inspiring to see.

Thank you also to the team at Tourism Calgary, and the countless number of volunteers, who work to deliver this program and event. You too, are inspiring.

This event is Calgary's tourism industry's tribute to you – the frontline and heart of house employees who everyday, go above and beyond to make our visitors, delegates and guests feel welcome and safe while in our city.

These will be my final Calgary White Hat Awards as CEO of Tourism Calgary. I will forever be proud of this event and what it means to our industry and to all of you. Your ability to connect and support each other, and with your guests, is truly incredible. Sharing your knowledge of the city, and providing outstanding service with a genuine smile is what sets Calgary apart as a warm and welcoming destination. And according to some, the friendliest city in the world!

While we have endured many challenges in our industry over the past few years, there is much to be optimistic about. Calgary has a lot to look forward to as a year-round destination with festivals, attractions, and major events to enjoy in every season.

About Us

Volunteers

At the heart of the Calgary White Hat Awards is a team of volunteers who give freely of their time and talent to assist with this event. More than 150 volunteers, from all areas of the community, collectively supported the search for this year’s top service performers in Calgary. Whether interviewing nominees, serving on the Calgary White Hat Awards committee, or assisting at the gala awards night, the dedication of our volunteers adds tremendous value and prestige to this widely recognized awards program. Tourism Calgary extends sincere thanks for the countless hours contributed by our dedicated volunteers. Your passion and commitment to service excellence and our industry is greatly appreciated.

Selection process

Since 1962, Calgary has been home to one of the most unique tributes to outstanding customer service – the Calgary White Hat Awards. Presented to tourism and hospitality industry employees who offer outstanding customer service, the awards honour individuals who have excelled in leadership and performance in 20 different categories.

More than 800 nominations were received throughout 2023, submitted by co-workers, managers, or supervisors of individuals in the service industry who have direct, daily contact with visitors and guests.

Once all the submissions are received, nominees are invited to interview with industry professionals who evaluate the candidates according to a pre-established grading system. Nominees are assessed on their enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication to the tourism and hospitality industries.

Final scores are tabulated and then reviewed by members of the Calgary White Hat Awards selection committee. Three finalists are identified in each category and one individual is selected as the recipient of the coveted White Hat. Category recipients are determined by the interview results and are chosen at the discretion of the selection committee.

All efforts are made to recognize the most qualified, friendly, and committed individuals that make Calgary such a great place to live, work, play and visit.
