Welcome to Round 6 of the SEFNL Berwick Motor Group Premiership Season.

Last week was a bye for the AFL Victoria Worksafe Community Championships, as our boys took on the Hampden FNL at Casey Fields. We had a beautiful day for football and we were hopeful of another victory for the SEFNL interleague team.

With player injuries in the third quarter, the Jonathan Brown led Hampden side were just too strong for us on the day as they ran out 18 point winners when the final siren sounded.

Congratulations to Michael Riseley on winning the ‘Best on Ground’ for SEFNL. Thanks to the SEFNL Staff, Sharlene and Liz, who ensured the players and coaching team were catered for and looking professional in their apparel.

Also, to our local media groups, Pakenham Gazette and Casey Radio, we thank you for your continued support and coverage. Thanks to our partners, who make it possible for this to happen and to the City of Casey and Casey Demons for their support at short notice.

Special thanks to the coaching team and support staff from the Pakenham Football Club: Jock, Matt, Tom, Phil, Dan, Nic and Sharni, Frank our Team Manager, Matt from Physioworks, and our water carriers; Jasper, Lachlan, Jack and Joel. Well done to all who participated on the day.

We say a reluctant farewell and much thanks to Jock Holland who announced his retirement in his post-game address after 6 years at the helm. Jock’s dedication, passion and professionalism has been greatly appreciated and has added value to all players who have had the privilege of being under your direction.

Inter League Weekend Inter League weekend didn’t quite turn out the way we hoped. Both the MPNFL and SEFNL teams went down to their opponents, Geelong and Hampden leagues respectively in closely fought contests.

At Casey Fields Jock Holland coached his SEFNL team for the last time against Jonathan Brown’s Hampden League side. It was a see sawing contest, with SEFNL leading into the last quarter however with a shortened bench due to injury Hampden ran over the top to win by 18 points.

Congratulations goes to the Hampden League for being too good on the day. We thank the City of Casey and Casey Demons for their support in ensuring the facilities were ready to host our game on short notice.

Special thanks to Jock Holland who announced after the SEFNL game that he will no longer be coach of the SEFNL team, after leading the team for 6 years. Until this year Jock had coached his team to 5 straight victories which is a great achievement. Well done and all the best to you Jock.

At the MCG, the MPNFL side, coached by John Hynes, suffered from some inaccurate kicking early, with Geelong leading 9.2 to 4.11 at half time. The margin remained fairly constant for much of the last 3 quarters with Geelong FNL running out 22 point winners. While we also congratulate Geelong for their win, I was very impressed with the commitment of the MPNFL players who never gave up at any stage.

On behalf of the AFL South East Commission, I would like to thank the players who represented their leagues last weekend as well as those who were part of the squads over the past couple of months. You all proudly wore the League jumpers and performed well. We appreciate the commitment you all made.

We would also like to thank the coaches and the support staff for the work you did with the teams in the lead up to the event and on match day. While it is a great achievement for players to be selected to play, they could not get on the park without having the support staff in the background. To the assistant coaches, trainers, team managers, runners, water carriers and those who generally assisted, I say thank you.

For the MPNFL, the loss means we drop to third ranking league in the State, and a meeting with the fourth ranked Northern in 2018. A win then will get us back to the Championship Final the following year.

This week we return to a full round of fixtures across our 3 senior football competitions, with some very interesting top of the table clashes that will go some way to end of season positions.

In SEFNL Beaconsfield (2nd) host Doveton (3rd) in an important game for both clubs.

In the Peninsula League, finals aspirants Bonbeach and Edi Asp face challenges at Frankston YCW and Mt Eliza. Can Chelsea win 3 games in a row when they take on Langwarrin at Lloyd Park?

Several matches in Nepean may lay claim to match of the round. That status may go to Red Hill who will be able to test their finals credentials against reigning premier Hastings.

I look forward to being at Mornington v Seaford, where the home club will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the day 15 young Mornington footballers lost their lives in a boating disaster returning from a match at Mordialloc on 21 May 1892.

2018 Community Championships Rankings Released AFL Victoria has released the official rankings for the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships following a successful 2017 competition on May 13.

Thirty-two community football leagues have been assigned new nominal rankings following their participation in its 2017 Championships, which saw the best senior players from across Victoria go head-to-head in a one off interleague match.

Geelong Football Netball League remains the number one ranked community football league in Victoria after defeating Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League by 22-points at the MCG. The Eastern Football League remains the best metropolitan league in Melbourne following its two point win over the Essendon District Football League in a thriller at Bayswater.

Eastern FL moves up to second place in the 2018 rankings and will face Geelong FNL for the top-ranking, while MPNFL will slip to third and face the Northern FL (fourth) after its win over Western Regional FL. Rounding out the top ten ranking positions are Essendon DFL (fifth), Ovens & Murray FL (sixth), Western Region FL (seventh), Ballarat FNL (eighth), Goulburn Valley FNL (ninth) and Hampden FNL (tenth).

The 2018 rankings list does not provide a likely schedule of matches for 2018, with leagues given the opportunity to opt-in or withdraw from the competition each season.

Final entries for participation in the 2018 season are not requested by AFL Victoria until November, which allows leagues sufficient time to decide whether they wish to participate in the competition the following year.

We Have Skills…Allegedly…

Skills – something a lot of people claim to have but are clearly mistaken.

Different between normal people and umpires – there is at least a remote possibility that a normal person has a skill. Umpires have absolutely no chance. Yes, please note that we are not including umpires in the realm of normal people.

Well at least that’s what we all thought. But delve a little deeper and you’ll realise that field umpires at least have one skill. Just one, but at least it’s one.

Ask an umpire to bounce next time you decide to be charitable and chin wag with one. Even if it going 15 metres to their left and only one foot off the ground it still classifies as a bounce and therefore… the umpire has a skill.

The Bounce was introduced to league football all the way back in 1887. Initially just to start each quarter it only took 4 short years for field umpires to be smacking the ball into the turf at every opportunity. And with a much poorer quality of grounds at the time they’d make specialists in today’s game.

An absolute bucket load of things then happened in the following 122 years; Coca-Cola produced its first bottle, the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, the Commonwealth of Australia was created (long overdue), Mr Booth invented the vacuum cleaner resulting in more reports of missing marbles than ever before, Crayola introduced crayons (at the cost of white walls all the world over), Hitler suffered little man syndrome, a couple of guys took a quick holiday to the moon, the Wiggles succeeded in their attempt for World rule and a few other things occurred that are too deep for article. But all the while field umpires continued to totter over to a pack, kindly request access to the football and slam the footy into the deck hoping for just enough

height to clear the hands of the 145cm ruckman who were enjoying a quiet chinwag while the poor umpire was looking down.

122 years is a damn long time for the system to stay the same (unfortunately football reverted back to its original setup in 2013 and umpires only had 4 opportunities a game to show off their real skill).

These days a rule struggles to last 12 months before someone finds an issue. Of course there’s been some changes in technique. Think back to the 1920s and 30s when the silly bugger would swing the ball single-handedly into the turf reminiscent of a Shaun Tait fire bolt. Later on they even squatted and punched the ball into the ground. Naturally it didn’t work at all. Must’ve been wearing iron fists too.

One day the bounce may be no more. And then we’ll evoke memories of the days when an umpire would break their own nose or send our oddly shaped ball into oblivion hoping not to send it through the goals and bounce the winning score.

But most of all, we’ll remember the times when there was a lighter side to umpiring and the thing that allowed us our genuine 10 seconds of fame.

Long live the bounce…

TOORADIN 8.11.59 LOST TO OFFICER 9.10.64 In a true definition of a tale of two halves, Tooradin had done all the attacking and amassed a 27 point lead from their 13 scoring shots at the main change. It seemed the home team where in a comfortable winning position, before Doug Koop delivered a message to stir the troops. Officer started to win the crucial contests as their midfield took control. Led by Matt Jones, Chris Larosa and a player to watch Harris Wassylko the Roos took the game by the scruff of the neck. 4 goals in 8 minutes including 2 on the run from Jones had the Roos back into the contest. Nick Schumann kicked one to steady the ship for the Gulls but the Roos could sense they could be a chance if they continued to apply pressure. Only 7 points separated both teams with a quarter to go, it was a cracking last quarter. The Gulls peppered the goals but couldn’t kick truly, 4 behinds in a row had the home supporters bleeding.

Kicking with the aid of a swirling breeze the Gulls, should have done better as a Captain inspired goal from Matty Clarke had the away side reduce the margin to a single point.

The intensity lifted and Matt Rogers drifted forward and kicked the Roos to the front. The seesawing battle continued as Seagull Travis Puntaroni pinch one back to give the home side back the lead. As the momentum continued to swing it was the Kangaroos Kane Wille, who took a great mark and kicked the sealer at the 22nd minute mark of the last to give Officer their third win in a row as the Kangas returned to the top 5 for the first time in a long time.

BEACONSFIELD 16.26.122 DEF HAMPTON PARK 2.1.13 It’s never an easy task to travel to Holm Park reserve and escape with the four points. It’s even harder when the average age of your list is under 20. The result was never in doubt but it was more about how both sides stuck to their processes.

Hampton Park have started their games pretty well in the first month of the season but it wasn’t the case as Beaconsfield kicked 4 goals to 1 to lead by 21 points at the first change.

Beacy’s bigger bodies started to take control of the contest.

Beau Dowler was dominant up forward, while Lachie Modica and Connor Guley provided plenty of run. The Eagles dominance was also reflected on the scoreboard as they kicked 5 goals to no score and extend their lead to 56 points by halftime. Hampton Park’s youngsters where in for a tough afternoon but they never dropped their heads and continued to fight the press. Beacy’s emphasis on defence has shone brightly all season and it appears their hard work has paid off.

Beaconsfield strangled Hampton Park into submission, Dowler finished the day with 5 goals with Guley and Modica regarded as their better players. C.J Layfield once again battled his heart out for the visitors the margin should have been more as the Eagles let themselves down in front of goal kicking 7.18 in the second half in their 109 point win.

PAKENHAM 5.5.35 LOST TO DOVETON 13.12.90 It’s becoming a trend at Pakenham, the young Lions start the game with a spark but as the game grows they start to fall away. Pakenham have shown plenty in the first quarters and this week was no different both teams separated by a point.

Lachie Batten was able to spend more time around the mouth of goal where he does his best work. Rus Gabriel assumed control in the middle and the game swung in favour of the Doves. Charlie O’Neill flourished in the conditions and wanted to make sure his time in the seniors was well spent providing a target while Taylor Joyce was held and Pickles Henry was sidelined due to injury. Nick Battle relished the wide spaces using his speed to burn the opposition and hurt them with his spread. The pressure began to mount and Pakenham had no relief in sight. Pakenham could only muster 2 points in the second quarter, their earlier endeavour was a faded memory as the home side trailed by 5 goals at the half. The second half was all Doveton. Pakenham had no answers being restricted to only 2 goals in the second half. The visitors took control and swung the match into their favour. Batten and O’Neill combined for 7 goals while Gabriel and Battle combined well around the ground. Clayton McCartney is a player to watch as once again he was regarded amongst the better players in Doveton’s 55 point win at Toomuc Reserve.

NARRE WARREN 7.14.56 LOST TO BERWICK 12.13.85 It was an energy charged Narre Warren welcoming early premiership favourite Berwick, as Narre celebrated their premiership win from ‘92. It was Berwick who settled early goals to Tim Gunn and Broadie Connelly kicked the Wickers to an early lead. Narre worked themselves into the contest but were unable to convert in front of goal and deliver any real blows. Andrew Morozoff played tall in attack kicked truly out of the ruck to provide the visitors some breathing space.

Jordyn Flannery and Brent Urwin kicked late goals to reduce the margin to 10 points and keep Narre in the hunt going into the main change. Narre dominated the third quarter but wasted opportunities in front of goal. The Magpies kicked 6 straight behinds, basically kicking themselves out of the contest. Berwick’s midfield were workman like led by James Magner, the Wickers outmuscled Narre and hit the scoreboard with Gunn booting his second to get their margin out towards 3 goals. Both teams exchanged goals in a frenetic finish to the third quarter, as Narre reduced the margin to 8 points. The last quarter saw the game open up and the 2015 premiers took full control. Berwick kicked four goals to one in the final quarter, Gunn finishing the game with a game-high 3 goals, in their impressive 29 point win. The win sees Berwick stay on top while Narre have slipped out of the top 5.

BEACONSFIELD V DOVETON Last Time - 2016 Elimination Final Doveton 9.6.60 lost to Beaconsfield 9.8.62 This contest is shaping as the match of the round if last year’s preliminary final is anything to go by. The battle between the best two big men in the competition Beaconsfield’s Scott Meyer against Doveton’s Rus Gabriel is worth the admission price in itself. Both men are well credentialed and who can get on top will give their side the edge. Both teams bring speed throughout their midfield and will be looking to move the ball quickly into their forward line. Taylor Joyce returns to Holm Park Reserve for the first time since leaving for greener pastures. Joyce will likely have the task of trying to beat the close checking and experienced defender Daniel Battaglin. Battaglin and Joyce will know each other’s game inside out having been premiership teammates in 2014. Beacy have prided themselves on their defensive game style, it will be tested against one of the more potent football sides. Doveton will be hoping Michael Henry is available so he can team up with the dangerous Lachie Batten, causing a head ache for Beacy’s fleetfooted running brigade. Jake Bowd has had an impressive start to the season, usually setting up the play off half-back, he might need to be used to nullify one of their small forwards. Doveton have been tested when up against a fellow finals contender this season and will be desperate to prove they are genuine finals contenders. The Doves face another acid test away from home but have had the week off to set themselves for an enthralling contest.

Whichever team can win enough of the one on one battles should be able to finish in front. Beacy by 13 points.

BERWICK V PAKENHAM Last Time - Round 16 Pakenham 8.10.58 lost to Berwick 17.15.117 Berwick welcome the proud club of Pakenham in their first encounter for the season. Berwick have been sublime all season and when tested have been able to take their game to new levels, unfortunately Pakenham are still building towards their best footy this season. The task doesn’t become any easier for the boys from Toomuc Reserve as they take on the early premiership favourites.

Pakenham have shown enough they can compete but haven’t been able to do it consistently or for long enough periods of their matches. Berwick have added some grunt with James Magner in the middle and some flair with Bryce Rutherford and Broadie Connelly who can play in different positions. Berwick will have too many ball winners for Pakenham to try and curtail, Berwick will see this as another opportunity to build on their hefty percentage.

Pakenham still have some quality players like interleague representatives Sam Blackwood and Jake Smith but they need more support, Steve O’Bryan and Rus Lehmann provide leadership but will it be enough for maroon and gold to be in the contest for four quarters. The Wickers will be too big and too strong and get the win at home by 75 points.

OFFICER V CRANBOURNE Last Time - Round 14 Officer - 7.7.49 lost to Cranbourne 19.23.137 This will be an intriguing contest for so many reasons. Former

Eagles Premiership Coach Doug Koop will go against his former team in Cranbourne, with his new side Officer riding a 3 game winning streak. A student under Koop’s tutelage Marc Holt may return to the seniors after an extended break on the sidelines due to injury. The Kangaroos has been a team that always matches up well against the Eagles in recent seasons often pushing them to their limits. If Cranbourne arrive only slightly underdone, Officer will be looking to capitalise at home. Cranbourne should be re-charged after enjoying a good break with the bye leading into the interleague match last weekend, meaning they haven’t played a match in close to 3 weeks. Cranbourne’s early season form has been patchy but an electric final quarter at Doveton should have the boys from the nest amped and ready to fire. Koop has brought a new edge to Officer, who have been competitive when they haven’t won. The Roos have a new sense of belief and are up for the fight, if this contest becomes physical don’t expect the home side to take a backwards step. Matt Jones has really stepped up in recent weeks and will need to be marked closely to ensure he doesn’t inspire the Roos to bring their A game to the contest.

Cranbourne could be hamstrung with an injury to one of their big men last week, Troy Tharle was on the end of a high shot last week and didn’t return suffering concussion at interleague level.

The Eagles faithful will be hoping the talented utility will be back to full fitness for this encounter. Usually it’s pretty easy to say Cranbourne will win and by how much, but I have a feeling this will be one hell of a contest and close to the end. Cranbourne’s experience in clutch situations should see them get the win at Starling Road by 21 points.

HAMPTON PARK V NARRE WARREN Last Time - Round 10 Hampton Park 4.6.30 lost to Narre Warren 25.22.172 Hampton Park play Narre Warren with both teams currently sitting outside of the top 5. Hampton Park have been taking positives out of each encounter with the margin’s irrelevant to one of the youngest sides ever assembled in the SEFNL history. With an average age of 18 depending on players’ availability the Redbacks have stripped it right back under first year coach Dean Warren with the hope of putting in better structures to hope bring this proud club back to life on the field. Narre Warren will be seething after back-to-back losses at home as it appears they are losing pace with the top 3 sides in the competition. Questions are starting to be asked, has the off season departures started to take its toll?

Where will their goals come from without a large target to kick too? I don’t think a win at Hampton Park will answer them all but it should provide the team with some confidence to get their season back on track. Hampton Park have unearthed some genuine talent from their young brigade who are actually still eligible to play U/19 footy, which should put the club in a great position going forward in years to come. CJ Layfield, Hayden Brough and Harry Paul are players the club can build their future around as they grow from experiences of playing senior footy against men. It would be easy for me to sit here and say another 100 point drubbing is on its way, but the reality of the situation is; this club nearly folded 4 months ago but with grit and passion the club has started to climb back into relevance. Narre will need to ensure they don’t tread carefully and take the percentage opportunity on offer, they can’t afford to let this one slip. Narre by 86 points

Finally we have the staggered start to the season behind us and we can gain some momentum with only our second home game in 8+ weeks.

It seems like weeks ago when we headed off to Fox Road to play Narre Warren in a danger game. Coming off a bye, HP and then another bye it was easy to expect the teams to struggle to get some rhythm. The seniors though hit their straps late in the game to record a tough fought win.

The reserves played well all day but went down by a few points in a very winnable game. Next Time.

Today, the Pakenham Football Club plays Berwick in what is always a tough game at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Senior side is looking for their first win of the season, while the Reserves will be looking to atone their loss against Doveton a couple of weeks ago and the U19s will be looking at putting a bit of space between themselves and Berwick on the u19 ladder. Pakenham 5th are just ahead of Berwick who are currently sitting 7th.

On behalf of the Pakenham Football Club’s committee, players, members and supporters, we would like to wish sincere condolences to the Maher family, for the passing of Pakenham Football Club’s past player, John ‘Jocka’ Maher, who passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday morning.

Jocka played in seven grand finals, winning five premierships (47, 48, 51, 52, 55) under club legend ‘Cracker’ Jackson. In years gone by, as a spectator, he would make his way into the seniors change room prematch on GF day, wandering among the players giving encouragement. He truly loved playing for our club and indeed watching and supporting over the years. He would recall key pivotal moments in Grand finals as if they were yesterday, and point the uninitiated to the 5 premiership team photos that adorned his office wall On special occasions, he would pull out his ‘Pakenham premiership blazer ‘ and wear it proudly.

Last weekend saw us venture down to Pakenham in celebration of the annual Pink Ribbon Round. The football saw us come away with 3/3 wins and the netball 7/10 wins! It was an unbelievable day both on the footy field and on the netball court.

The U19s visited Pakenham a little undermanned but full of effort and played an amazing for 3 quarters to clear out to a 6 goals lead at the last change. The boys were spent and kicking against a stiff breeze in the last quarter managed to grip on for a gutsy 7 point win. All 15 boys should be proud of their efforts. Best players were Kaleb VanBeek and Declan O’Donnell.

Keeping working hard at training boys, and you’ll see many more successful wins coming your way.

The reserves travelled out to a windy Pakenham with a depleted squad due to injuries throughout the club. But we battled out another great win, with the backline once again saving the game. Seany K and Michael Rodriquez cut off countless Pakenham inside 50s allowing our 4th win on the trot. Well done boys keep up the great effort & bring on Beaconsfield next week which I’m sure will be a tough battle.

Over the bye weekend we held a DFNC ‘Give Back’ Day. All players and committee members were encouraged to give back their time by assisting and volunteering at the local Doveton Salvation Army. To all the players, coaches and committee members who helped out, we cannot thank you enough. Your time and generosity has contributed to so many in need. We would also like to thank the Doveton Salvation Army who allowed us to volunteer and gave us so much insight into why the Salvation Army is so important to individuals in need from meals, to meal vouchers, clothing and housing. We are looking forward to working more closely with you in the near future.

The seniors had to come up against some poor weather but it didn’t seem to faze them too much.

We fielded a much younger and fresher side then what we had seen in previous weeks. We also saw the likes of the O’Neill brothers get the call up from the reserves off the back of their impressive performances over the past few weeks. The first quarter break saw Pakenham keeping us on our toes and we only had the lead by a point at the quarter time break.

Welcome back to normal rounds after the Interleague competition last weekend. This week we welcome the Cranbourne Football Club to Officer and wish all teams good luck.

In Round 5 we visited Tooradin and for the second week in a row came away with three wins. The Under 19’s started the day off well with an 87 point win against an undermanned Tooradin side. The Reserves followed this up with a 44 point victory after a hard fought match against a very determined Tooradin team.

The Senior match was an exciting game with the home side managing to keep their noses in front for much of the match. After falling behind to the tune of over four goals the boys put in a great last quarter to win by five points, hitting the front with only moments left on the clock.

Don’t forget tonight’s Annual Beer Pong Tournament commencing at 7.30. Cost is $40 per team of two with great cash prizes.

Also, remember to keep Saturday August 19 free - it’s a bye round for us in the footy but we’ll be holding the Reverse Draw. More details closer to the date.

Last weekend we enjoyed the week off which gave the boys an opportunity to rest some weary bodies after a tough start to the season. Prior to that we ventured out to Beaconsfield where we encountered an extremely well organised team whose defensive set up was one of the toughest we have come across.

Both the seniors and reserves found it difficult to hit the scoreboard on the day.

Better players in the Seniors were CJ Layfield, Y Jaffer-Williams, H Brough, J Jones, J Philpin & T Ziegeler. In the Reserves better players were D Glazier, N Dawes, J Wallace, M McInroy-Howard, S Puwaye & K Mobourne.

Narre’s Ones were competitive for three quarters but Berwick ran the game out better in the last quarter for a five-goal result. Narre’s Reserves and Under 19 A had good wins over Berwick, but Narre’s Under 19B were soundly beaten by Cranbourne.

Seniors – Berwick’s Ones got the jump with two early goals, then Narre spent much of the day playing catch-up footy. It was tough in close and Narre worked hard but inaccurate set-shot kicking delivered little reward for our effort. The midfield contest was enthralling with Berwick’s strong runners taking the points. It’s telling that several of Narre’s better players were in defensive roles with Staggy, Benny Carter and Jace Kelly in the action all day. Our mudrunners like Andy Vella and Trent Cody were great in the packs, but our delivery into the forward 50 made it difficult for our forwards.

Reserves - A top-of-the-table clash with a final scoreline of 3.10 to 3.7 was obviously a dour defensive contest. In tough wet and windy conditions it wasn’t pretty but it was enthralling to watch.

There was rarely more than a kick between the teams all day, and Narre was 3 points down at the last change, kicking against the wind in the last quarter. Determined footy by the Magpies, a touch of luck at times and great leadership from some of our experienced heads saw us hold on for a great win.

Daniel Jackson’s great form continues and Damo Collins, Ryan Quirk and Sammy McLean were great four-quarter contributors for the

Pies. Great to see Troy Mengler play well in his first game for the year & Lukey Ross back playing at Narre.

Under 19 A – Narre gained an early lead with the wind, then we defended well to hold Berwick to just one goal when they had the advantage in the second term. Our strong four-goal third term belied the tough conditions and we turned for home with a 38 point lead. A big win by our boys who are playing hard impressive footy and always in the right spirit.

The win was built on the efforts of Jake Stuart who was in-and-under all day; Jack Flannery dominant in the ruck and up forward; Jake Boccari, Dylan Webber , Tom Millar and Leigh Tannahill. Congratulations to Matt Soz & Cippa for steering the team to a great win with Grubbo away.

Under 19 B – Narre’s Under 19B played a strong Cranbourne A outfit in the early game.

Again challenged by superior opposition, Narre’s young side showed grit and spirit throughout the game. Cranbourne’s strong defence coupled with a stiff breeze combined to keep Narre from scoring in the second and fourth quarters, but our team’s endeavour can never be questioned. Their willingness to keep trying and learning is outstanding. Brandon Hogan was again in our best and got great support from Dylan Mutimer, Benny Kanka, Barney Maout-Agang , Josh Collett and Adam Machnikowski.

BEACONSFIELD 52 DEF HAMPTON PARK 47 NARRE WARREN 64 DEF BERWICK 45 PAKENHAM 35 LOST TO DOVETON 53 TOORADIN 53 DEF ROC 29 The cold winter like conditions made it tough for all teams but it didn’t take long before the action on the court started to heat up. In the match of the round Beaconsfield welcomed Hampton Park in a ferocious battle. The slippery conditions was always going to make the game more interesting, the Redbacks free flowing Netball was restricted. Beaconsfield are a classy unit with winners across the court and were able to setup an 8 point halftime lead. The vistors were up for the fight in the second half and made hard work of it for Beaconsfield. The Redbacks started to turn the game into their favour but were unable to capitalise where it mattered most, the scoreboard. The high intensity game finishing with Beaconsfield winning by 5 goals.

Doveton moved to third on the ladder after another impressive display at Pakenham.

The Doves had their noses in front early (14-8) before they poured on a scintillating performance in the second stanza. Doveton’s finals aspirations grow after every match and their second quarter was blinding outscoring Pakenham 16 goals to 4 and lead by 18 goals at halftime. Doveton is well lead by the talented Liz Edwards, with a strong shooting brigade the Doves look well placed to challenge the best in the competition. To Pakenham’s credit the girls continued to play hard. The Lions made positional changes and

looked a more competitive outfit in the second half but still went down by 18 goals.

Tooradin’s perfect season continued, they go into their first bye with the unblemished record of 5 straight wins. ROC were up for the battle, their defence on point restricting Tooradin’s potent attack and led by 1 goal at quarter-time. The second quarter saw the girls from Westernport Bay really hit their straps, with Sara Duncan coming on to play WD and provide plenty of drive to their attackers. The moved worked with the Gulls outscoring their opposition 14 goals to 7, with sharpshooter Alex Duff scoring 10 goals. Their second quarter display set the tone for the rest of the match, Tooradin extending their lead beyond 20 goals winning 53 to 29 and go into their bye in a healthy state.

It was more of a question of when rather than how long before last year’s Premiers Narre Warren would return to the winners list. Narre came out with all guns blazing outscoring Berwick by 10 goals (18-8), 16 goals coming from Narre starlet Gabby Dwyer. Dwyer had an outstanding match finishing the game with 48 goals. Although yet to taste victory this season, Berwick have continued to improve.

The young Wickers are getting better with more experience together on the court.

Berwick were entitled to go into their shells after quarter-time but they continued to put pressure on their fancied rival. Berwick have unearthed their own talent with Abuk Kenyang finishing the match with 34 goals. Narre where just too classy and experienced, winning every quarter to finish in front by 19 goals.

Round 6 netball preview

Round Six action brings us one of the best rounds of Netball in A Grade all season, we have 3 matches with all teams in finals contention while Berwick and Pakenham will have a chance to win their first game of the season.

BEACONSFIELD V DOVETON Beaconsfield will roll the red carpet out for the improving Doveton side. Beaconsfield are playing a confident brand of netball, their only loss at the hands of the ladder leaders Tooradin. Jasmine Jones has always been a star of the netball league and has stepped straight back into position for the Eagles and back to her dominating best.

Jones will be a player the Doves will put a lot of time into if they are to be a chance to secure the important win away from home. Doveton are just sitting on the cusp and will be looking to really test themselves against some of the best in the competition and see where they sit as they push their own premiership credentials. Both teams bring similar game styles to the contest and you could expect a few sparks to fly when they hit the court. Beacy will use all of their home court to advantage and should sneak away with a 5 goal win.

BERWICK V PAKENHAM Berwick and Pakenham will do battle with both teams desperate to secure the 4 points for the first time this season. Berwick probably hold a slight edge over Pakenham in terms of form, which could be hard to judge considering they’re both yet to get that taste of victory.

Berwick has been scoring more on average throughout the season, Berwick are averaging 40 goals and Pakenham are on 28. Berwick’s potency should be too difficult for the Pakenham defence, the Lions defence has been conceding nearly 58 goals a game. If the Wickers bring a consistent brand of netball to the match and they should be right in the finish. Pakenham have shown some improvements in matches, a small drop off has let their opponents back into the contest. Pakenham will be desperate to get the win as this match will probably be their best chance before they face-off against Berwick later in the season. Berwick by 11 goals

ROC V CRANBOURNE ROC welcome Cranbourne to Starling Rd in what shapes to be an important match for both clubs. ROC have let it slip in recent weeks, which has seen them drop from

third place to outside of the 5 and in need of a win.

Cranbourne have proven to be a team to watch this season and should come into the contest primed after a bye and then the interleague week off. It’s a difficult task to try and pick the winner in this match as both teams at their best would win the match, but going by current form Cranbourne should to be too strong.

ROC can’t afford to lose another match against another finals contender, it’s a real 8 point game for them, and a return to the winners for the Kangas would see them back pushing for a Top 5 position. A loss here won’t be catastrophic but will make it that bit harder as ROC could potentially be 2 games out of the 5. Cranbourne have shown already this season they have come prepared to compete and take their game to new levels. The Eagles will once again get the chance to prove their worth against an experienced line-up away from home.

Cranbourne by 7 goals

HAMPTON PARK V NARRE WARREN Hampton Park and Narre Warren last year’s finalists will meet again with both teams looking to get another win and a shot of confidence leading into the halfway mark of the season. It has taken Hampton Park a few weeks to gel and start to play a style that coach Kylie Kibble wants from her young side, while Narre bounced back to form scoring one of the highest scores of the season (64) to return to the winners list last weekend. Narre have been the benchmark of the A Grade in recent years but it seems the competition has closed the gap and there won’t be any easy win for last year’s premiers. Hampton Park rely on good conditions to allow the Redbacks to play their style of Netball, good and clear conditions should allow the home side fluent ball movement providing their goalers the best opportunity to score.

Narre unfurled their netball flags last week against Berwick and will be looking to build on their impressive win. Narre will have the experience and class edge against Hampton Park, but it won’t be a walk in the park for the visitors. If Narre underestimate their opposition this week, they could be facing their third loss in four weeks. Narre have welcomed a new addition to the nest recently, with Greg and Jade Heinrich, welcoming their newborn baby and will be hoping that is a sign of better things to come this season. Narre by 16 goals.

A Grade overcame terrible weather conditions, and a tenacious Hampton Park, to record their third victory of the season, and retain 2nd spot. The game was played in atrocious conditions for the whole 60 minutes, and it was always going to come down to who could best handle the conditions. Beaconsfield were able to extend their lead out to 9 during the second quarter, but Hampton Park were always in the contest, pressing us until the final whistle. This weeks awards go to Kate, Jasmine and Rylee.

The U17 White girls had another fantastic win on the weekend. In windy conditions the girls put together 4 strong quarters of netball. The girls had many beautiful passages of play putting Hampton Park on the back foot and they applied full court defensive pressure for the full 48 minutes. Fantastic goaler to goaler work saw the girls come away with a convincing win.

B grade - This weekend saw Hampton Park visit Holm Park Reserve in a battle to solidify top spot on the ladder.

Hampered by wet weather for most of the game the B Grade Beacy Eagles established an early 7 goal break in the first. Each quarter the team extended the lead, finishing with a solid 25 goal victory. Despite a number of combinations taking the court, the team were able to adapt quickly. Awards - Zoe, Danielle and Tanya.

U15 Red - In windy conditions at home this week against Hampton Park the girls came away with a low scoring win 15-10 which has pushed us into the top 5. Mid courters worked hard to get the ball down to the goalers and our defenders both worked hard with lots of intercepts and rebounds. With 2 injured on the bench and a third player down in the last quarter we luckily had Chloe from U15 White to fill in and run a great WD. Best on court Mikayla GD and Jemima GK.

C grade came up against Hampton Park and it was a tight first quarter where both teams converted all their opportunities. We managed to meet some clear goals we set for the second quarter which helped us kick away for the rest of the game. Well done to our very tight defense, along with our hard running mid court and let’s not forget the finishing skills of our attackers today! Awards went to Mia, Caity, Jordan and Sam.

U13 Red - The girls got off to a fantastic start in the first quarter. With such a strong lead it enabled us to make a few changes to our line up, and experiment with new combinations throughout all area’s, defensive, mid court and attack. Well done to all girls whom applied intense defensive pressure for all 4 quarters. Awards: Tiarna & Tahlia. Score: 32 v 9.

Awards: Mackenzie, Jess, Brodie and Bree.

D Grade - Great team effort across the whole court. We played our game and kept the intensity high throughout the 4 quarters. With two players away this week, our girls stepped up to play key positions and nailed it. Maddie P got Best on Court for her awesome movement in and out of the goal circle. Other awards went to Tiannah, she played out of her comfort zone in GD but kept her player right out of the game. Claire got the next award for her consistent feeds and drives all the way down the mid court. Score 38-20, great win.

U17 Red - A fantastic win on the weekend that demonstrated another strong defensive effort from Anya, Eb, Charlotte and Teneille. It was great to see our attack end starting to find their confidence, with the last quarter efforts seeing our goalers shooting at 100% accuracy which was assisted by some excellent feeding from our mid court.

U13 White the girls fought hard throughout the game unfortunately Pakenham were too strong for us on the day.

Our biggest let downs we’re our leads and passes I’m sure over the next few weeks we can develop both of these things and come off with a few wins under our belt.

U13 Red you little rockstars!! I asked you to come forward, you delivered, I asked for strong passes, you delivered, I asked for front cuts in the goal ring, you delivered, I asked you to maintain your lead at 3/4 time and you fought hard and again, you delivered. I’m very proud of each and every one of you!

U15 White - With 2 new players into the mix we are still finding our rhythm as a team! This week it took the girls 3 quarters to wake up and get into it... if only there were another 4 quarters of netball to be played! As coach though it always lovely to see things we have worked on in training coming together! While we weren’t lucky enough to get the win this week our losing margins are shrinking every week!

U15 Red: Started off on fire with a 10 goal first quarter. We moved sensationally down the court & our goalers capitalised every single time. We had a shaky next half of netball with Pakenham applying some amazing pressure throughout the midcourt. However, our midcourt kept us in the game with some outstanding runs of plays. We came away convincing winners & look forward to next week’s challenge.

C Grade: Going into this game knowing that Pakenham was sitting 2nd to last on the ladder, I didn’t want our ladies to go in too cocky. With the strong attacking skills of Suliana and the tall target of Shani, the girls were finding it easy to feed them.

With our defenders concentrating on shutting down their shooters early into the game provided them with multiple turn overs. The experience of maturity and the fitness from our youth throughout the court secured successful turnovers and conversions. Overall a brilliant game, seeing us come away with another win.

B Grade: Not the result we wanted or needed but some hustle in our team and stayed consistent for the first half. Doveton players then decided they weren’t with the result and tried to push back and close down the margin. If the minor injuries didn’t occur which caused the changes in the last half, Doveton would have succeeded and possibly taken the win!

A Grade: Congratulations on the win, especially our junior up and coming super stars. Doveton’s future lies in your hands and with that it truly shows the potential we have within the club. Awesome win, now let’s continue this run against Beacy!

U17’s White: It was a great day for netball. We started our game a bit slow and after our chat at quarter time we put the foot down and move further in front by the last quarter. We were injury filled going into the last quarter but we walked away winners.

U17’s Red: 1st quarter sleep in again. Our effort and attitude fantastic. But skills letting us down. With the options to play girls forward or back. I asked a girl to play back today for the first 1/2 and she just gave me a contest every time. The girls getting into gear, we started to move the ball better, passes started to hit targets, and our pressure all over the court was fantastic. We are starting to build.

J.B. Out! D Grade: We started the first quarter strong but Pakenham kept up with us. The second quarter saw us strengthen our lead & we were settling in nicely. The second half

berwick With high hopes going in against the formidable Narre Warren , our Wicker Chicks had a great positive outcome across the whole day, even if the score board didnt always reflect as such.

Both of our 13 & U teams had tremendous wins against Narre in Round 5 - Pink Sports Round, with the games being played in support of the BCNA. Our 13 Reds showed a great initiative in donning the pink socks against Narre’s Red team, to show camaraderie to a fellow netball players’ family in their current fight against the dreaded disease. These girls showed the fight to win on the court and came away with a brilliant win 24-12.

Our 13 Whites showed their strength as a team last round and came together with a strong win on court, with Coach Mel Guic confirming this team are hoping to make finals. The Whites defensive game was superb, with captain Ainsley Fothergill keeping her intercepts flowing all game and the great teamwork in goals with Delylah Loulanting and Alek Mawith, which led to the 20-10 win for the team.

Bridget Arthurson and her 15 Whites took to battle to Narre for their Round 5 clash, again showing how far these girls have come in 3 short rounds of playing together. The midcourt combination of Jasmine Corless, Sophie Castricum and Keeley Stickley held them together, with great teamwork and passing from one end to the other. Whites win 25-18 takes them to 4th on the league ladder.

This week we welcome Pakenham Netball Club to Edwin Flack in what we hope to be a great day of sportsmanship and great display of netball all round!

Our 15 Red’s went in knowing they had a tough game in front of them against Narre’s strong and commendable goaling combination. Both defensive players, Sussu Liai and Akech Nyoul, certainly proved they are a force to be reckoned with both girls cutting off some amazing passes and grabbing some great rebounds. The girls managed to level the scores in the last quarter, after a 5 goal turn around from a first quarter defecit. The magpies came away with a 2 goal win at the final whistle, leaving coach Leanne Walford with the determination to get the girls over the line in Round 6 at Edwin Flack.

Last Thursday the club provided a warm welcome back for specialist training sessions with Maxine Wauchope, which is always beneficial. It was great to see our players all staying after training and enjoying the delicious Pizzas the club obtained from our new club sponsor Masseys Pizza and Pasta who are located at SHOP 2 LAKESIDE Boulevard, Pakenham.

Round 5 saw us travelling down to Tooradin, the morning was full of sunshine and our juniors shone out on the court ! All our juniors came away with very good wins and are looking great as we approach the middle of the season.

Our seniors had a tougher afternoon as the rain and wind arrived ! Tooradin were very strong out on the court and defeated all our seniors with D Grade just going down on the siren ! Our ROC girls have worked hard over the break and are ready to come out firing against cranbourne this weekend on our home ground, and we are ready to win !

Over the round break we took the opportunity to get our courts resurfaced and they look amazing ! A big thank you to Amy Jones for all her hard work to organise them . We would also like to thank Emma Arnett , our sponsorship and fundraising co-ordinator who has worked so hard to raise funds for our club.

Finally to our wonderful supporters, members and sponsors without them we could not achieve what we do ! Thank you !

Under 15s Round 5, brought us to visit Beacy. As expected it was a tough game, but as usual the girls fought hard all over the court. We stuck with them a majority of the game, however we ended up just dropping away in the last quarter.

As a young team we continue to learn and better ourselves every game. Good work girls, keep it up!

Under 17 Reds went in hard the defence absolutely smashed it throughout the whole game putting in 100% although second half attacking end dropped their heads making it very difficult for our defence work to be brought down court!

Best on ground was Skye Marie Harvey who played a great last half in the goals.

B grade tough conditions against a tough side. Beaconsfield are definitely the team to beat this season and we learnt very quickly why. Struggling to move the ball through the attacking halve the wet conditions made it very hard for us to get a run on which has served us well in our last 3 wins. Down by more than 10 in the last qtr we used the opportunity to play with some combinations and rotate some court time. Final score was a blow out but was not our focus as there is still a long way to go this season. Best on ground Shannesy Hilder

C Grade struggled all day. Looking the better team for a lot of the game we had to work hard to stay in touch.

While the Beacy goalers on fire and they capitalised on our errors. Passing long and high in windy conditions was our undoing in the end.

Round Five saw Narre Warren host Berwick for the annual Pink Sports Day. With the courts, players and umpires donning a dash of pink, there was a buzz in the air. There was a great crowd for the junior matches, which were a good contest.

On a social front there is plenty coming up:

Our 13s had a tough start to the day, both sides going down to Berwick. The 15 Red girls took the four points in a highly skilled game while the 15 W girls suffered a narrow loss. The 17s both recorded wins with the 17 Red girls producing their best performance of the season. C and D Grade both secured large wins, continuing their winning ways. B Grade was a tussle with NW holding a narrow lead for most of the game. A 20 goal second quarter set up a good win just before the pouring rain hit.

A Grade were contesting the inaugural Berwick Mazda Shield. Despite the trying conditions, they controlled the game, building their lead with each quarter.

Feeling fresh after the Interleague week off, Narre Warren travel to Hampton Park for eight Netball games.

With several senior players unavailable, opportunities to shine will be up for grabs. Tough, competitive games are expected. Good luck to all teams!
