Mock Trial competes at regionals by
Hannah Trochinski
The Mock Trial team put their skills to the test as they competed against other schools in a court case about a car - pedestrian accident in which they had to prove whether the driver or the pedestrian was more negligent. On Feb. 8, the Mock Trial team, consisting of 15 students, left the school at 6:15 a.m. for their regional meet at the Outagamie County courthouse in Appleton. “Mock Trial is a ficticious court case that is given to each school with different roles, witnesses and attornies, and each school competes based on what other schools put together,” Mock Trial Coach Jennifer Leahy said. Throughout the day, the two smaller teams competed in four rounds against nine other teams. Berlin is the smallest school in the region, so the fact that they came with two teams is a major accomplishment. The maximum number of students that can be on a single team is 12. The students decide on whether they wish to be an attorney or a witness and go from there. Some even double up and are both. Senior Tom Tumbarello is an attorney for his first and only year of Mock Trial. “I joined because I took Mr. Knoke’s Law and Criminal Justice class third trimester of my junior

Others joined early in their high school experience, like sophomore Rachel Van Dyke, who was a witness. “I joined Mock Trial my freshmen year because I thought it would be really cool to learn the law and experience what an everyday courthouse is like,” Van Dyke said. Newsbriefs Key Club to attend district leadership conference
The Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District Leadership Conference (DCON) will be March 7-9 in Green Bay. Attending will be 13 BHS students, as well as Key Club Advisors Sarah Markel and Sarah Gumtow. “This is a conference for those who would like to not only improve future Key Club skills, but also important life skills while having fun,” Gumtow said. The trip is sponsored by the Berlin Kiwanis Club, local fundraisers and a small amount that was left to pay by each member attending.
FFA educates school about agriculture
FFA participates in competitions that educate an audience about what it means to be a part of something bigger. “There is more to FFA than just farming,” freshman Jacob Sattler said. “At the competitions, you meet a lot of people and learn how to get out of your comfort zone and speak in front of all those people.” The sectional meet of the speaking competition is on March 4 in Westfield.
Ski Club hopes for good weather
With unpredictable weather and temperatures colder than most winters, the Ski Club has had to reschedule and cancel more trips than in past years. “It’s really frustrating that we can’t get outside on the hills,” junior Kayla Klapper said. “I have to take off of work for trips and it’s hard to reschedule.”
in different ways for the meets. “There is a lot of writing questions,” Leahy said. “Mr. Blazel comes in and makes sure the legal side is being covered.” While the attornies have to think of questions, witnesses must know how to answer them. “I look over my affidavit so I’m prepared for the questions the other team will ask me,” Van Dyke said. Being in Mock Trial involves a lot
of focus and participants need to know how to phrase questions and answers in a way so they are true but do not hurt their side of the case. Attornies must make sure the way they ask will not be grounds for the other team to object to the question. There are also some fun things, too. “My favorite part is cross examining,” Tumbarello said. “You get to make the witnesses look really stupid if you know what you’re do-
ing.” During the course of the few weeks that are spent working on Mock Trial, there is a lot of growth within the team. “My favorite part is watching the students figure out that they actually can get up in front of people and know what they are talking about,” Leahy said. While the team did not qualify for state this year, the varsity team took fifth at regionals.
Bathroom vandalism results in closed doors by
Alex Grams
Using the restroom has become quite the task for guys in the past weeks. Vandalism of the doors has resulted in the restroom being locked until the perpetrator is caught. It has been closed since Feb. 7. The closure of the entrance door have been continuously snapped off each door. Closures pull the door shut after someone uses it and they are also used for holding a door open. Even though a closed restroom is not a major issue it still has an affect on the students. “I think its really dumb, we can’t even go to the bathroom upstairs now,” sophomore Eric Roehl said. This is not the first incident of bathroom vandalism in the high school and senior George Jensen is sick of it. “If there are people in our school that feel that they need to
