Do I need a rear red reflector?
Yes and it must be capable of being seen out to 600 ft. when illuminated by a low beam headlight. You should buy a reflector that is advertised as in compliance with Federal safety standards. That will mean the reflector is large and effective enough to provide the required visibility. Find a place to securely mount it so it is unobstructed. Securely attached to the rear of a seat bag may be a good spot. It must be behind your seat post and behind any obstructions.
Can I remove the reflector after dawn?
The reflector requirement applies to hours of darkness as well as areas of reduced visibility. This means all the lights including the reflector must be used when in a tunnel or in case of fog. If you are found without appropriate lights and reflectors the Park officers may remove you from the course.
Do I need a rear facing blinking light?
Both we and the National Park require that you also use a rear facing blinking light in addition to the reflector. The blinkie must be on and operating continuously while in the national park. You will not be allowed to proceed without it. Feel free to supplement the legal requirements with additional visibility aids which could include things like mirrors, safety vests, helmet lights and other visibility aids. We intend to secure a supply of red adhesive reflective tape and have it available at the start line for those who wish to enhance their visibility.
Is it possible to camp at the Fairgrounds on the night of September 3rd?
The Enumclaw Expo Center has both hookup camping and “dry” (tent) camping available. There are charges and instructions for camping and you have to make your arrangements IN ADVANCE with the Expo Center. If you are not able to pick up your pass from the Expo Center in advance they will provide the approved passes to us for pickup from registration. YOU HAVE TO MAKE THOSE ARRANGEMENTS IN ADVANCE. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated as their office closes at 4 PM on the 3rd.
Please clarify the light requirements as most lights last 3 hrs. Is it permissible to turn it off after sunrise and then turn it on for the tunnels?
It is up to you to provide working lights for the ride. For headlights we anticipate up to one hour in darkness at the start, but if you encounter fog later in the ride you may have to turn headlights on again. Flashing rear lights have to be on throughout the ride. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CARRY ENOUGH BATTERIES TO RUN YOUR LIGHTS AS NEEDED. IF YOUR LIGHTS DO NOT WORK YOU COULD BE REQUIRED TO ABANDON THE RIDE.
Where can I put the red reflector rear facing?
The law requires a rear reflector securely attached to the bike and CONTINUOUSLY visible out to 600 ft from all angles. Each bike configuration is different, and it is up to you to figure out what works for you. One suggestion is get a clamp on reflector that can be attached to the rear frame on your bike. The reflector must be securely attached to your bike, something attached to your helmet or clothing may not qualify.
What type of Aero bars are permitted?
All commercial handlebars are permitted. The use of aerobars and aerodynamic positions where your hands are less than a foot apart is not permitted in pacelines, rest stops, starts and stops.
What type of e-bikes are permitted?
No e-bikes are permitted.
Do I need a red rear reflector in addition to a rear strobe light?
Yes.
Do I need a rear-view mirror if I have a rear camera view radar type system?
Rear view mirrors are strongly recommended but not required. How you choose to do a rear view is up to you. If you have a rear facing radar, your battery will not last 6 hours, and you will not complete this ride in 6 hours.
