Sin embargo, gracias a este comportamiento, es que todos hemos vivido semanas de inquietud que sirvieron como un catalizador para la transformación de nuestra ciudad.

No importa lo duro y por cuánto tiempo intente, es imposible imaginar cómo Donald Trump cumplirá todas sus promesas. No tiene experiencia, no tiene la mente abierta, nunca ha estado comprometido con el servicio y no es humilde.

Después de las marchas masivas alrededor de la nación, incluyendo el centro de St. Louis, una luz de esperanza comienza a iluminar muchos hogares para iniciar cambios importantes que necesitan ser realizados. Todos juntos podemos cambiar la historia entera de esta gran nación.

Después de mudarme a St. Louis en 1998 desde la Ciudad de México, he conocido a gente maravillosa de todos los matices de la gama de colores y me siento orgullosa de llamar a St. Louis mi casa. As for the discretion of the public scene, the current occupant of theWhite House apparently needs to put his name on every building, plane, and commercial establishment. He needed to have the largest audience in history during his inauguration day, even if it required using alternative means to make it happen.

However, thanks to this behavior, we all have lived weeks of uncertainty that has served as a catalyst for the transformation of our city.

No matter how hard and how long he will try, it is impossible to imagine how Donald Trump will keep all his promises. He has no experience, is not open-minded, has never been committed to service and is not humble.

After the massive marches around the nation including downtown St. Louis, there is a light of hope for many to initiate major changes that need to be made; all together, we can change the whole history of this great nation.

After moving to St. Louis in 1998 from Mexico City, I have met wonderful people of all shades of the color spectrum and I am proud to call St. Louis my home. There are always other points of view to tell a story, and I feel optimistic that the people of St. Louis have begun to become aware of the call to a process of change, which it is necessary the city to progress.

For the last 17 years, I have seen this city embrace diverse ethnicities from all over the world, and I am pleased that some of them have shared a little of themselves. St. Louis is a very diverse city that enhances the lives of those who are looking for a way to progress in these complex times for the world. We are committed to illuminate this part of our history.

I hope you enjoy this edition “DIVERSITY MAKES AMERICA GREAT”, thanks to all those leaders who make this nation great. Leaders like these are the ones who will keep St. Louis on the map as an evolutionary and progressive city.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

A

s most of you know, 16 years ago, a small group of the Latino community created the Hispanic Leaders Group of greater St Louis and with them the Hispanic Capitol Day in Jefferson Missouri became one of the most important conferences for our community.

The objective of the conference is to educate politicians and administrators, in a non-partisan manner, on issues of importance to Hispanics, and put forth informational activities to increase public awareness of Hispanic causes. HLG, through the conference, strives to politically empower the Missouri Hispanic community.

On March 8, the Hispanic community of Missouri will spend a day talking with elected officials and heads of agencies. This will allow the delegates to discuss, educate, and influence the makers and administrators of the laws and, more important, to let them hear the voices of the Hispanic community.

On this day, the delegates will be introduced to the Senate and the House of Representatives.

During special meetings, the participants will also be given presentations by some state agencies and other organizations. Delegates will also be meeting with a statewide of elected officers and the leadership in the Senate and the House. The highlight of the day will be the meeting with the Governor and/or the Lt. Governor.

A reception will be held in the evening of Tuesday, March 7 in Jefferson City where various elected officials are expected to come and join the Hispanic delegates in a relaxed and informal manner.

C

uando me reuní por primera vez con Betsy Cohen, Directora Ejecutiva del Proyecto Mosaic, fue en 2013. En ese momento la organización era nueva y la iniciativa seguía siendo un plan ambicioso para ayudar a St Louis a crecer y prosperar. Desde entonces, Betsy ha participado en múltiples eventos donde ha sido capaz de entregar un mensaje de innovación a través de la inclusión.

Antes del proyecto Mosaic, Betsy trabajó en Nestlé Purina en St. Louis durante varios años, allí ocupó el cargo de Vicepresidenta. Durante su trabajo en Nestlé, también lanzó y dirigió una coalición regional en St. Louis. En 2013, Betsy fue llamada para asumir el papel de Directora del Proyecto Mosaic, una iniciativa que tenía como objetivo hacer de St. Louis la región metropolitana de más rápido crecimiento. Con este proyecto, Betsy ha podido llegar a millones, no sólo a nivel regional, sino también nacional, atrayendo a los recién llegados de todo el país y el mundo, para invertir en la región. Siendo yo misma una inmigrante Colombiana, encontré la iniciativa como emocionante y alentadora. Una idea que ha sido contradicha por muchos que creen que el talento extranjero trae un impacto negativo a nuestra comunidad y economía.

A través de hechos, nuevos programas e información, el Proyecto Mosaic ha sido capaz no solo de alcanzar sus metas, sino también de

abrir muchas mentes, cambiar las perspectivas y hacer de St. Louis una región más acogedora e inclusiva.

Organizaciones como Mosaic tienen la misión de reconstruir el país, región por región, con la idea que una vez ayudó a construir a los Estados Unidos: Dar la bienvenida a personas de todo el mundo para trabajar juntos hacia un objetivo común, construir el sueño americano.

Debido a que St. Louis es una de las ciudades con crecimiento más lento de población , con una fuerza de trabajo envejecida y una continua migración de jóvenes profesionales, los residentes extranjeros y los recién llegados se han convertido en la clave para reconstruir la población y la economía de la región.

A pesar de los muchos cambios federales actuales, que hacen que muchos inmigrantes teman por su futuro en los Estados Unidos, regiones como St. Louis continúan fomentando los esfuerzos a través de organizaciones tales como el Proyecto Mosaic, que pretende atraer a empresarios y trabajadores calificados extranjeros para invertir y usar sus talentos en la ciudad, como parte de un proyecto e c o n ó m i c o nacional.

Como embajadora y defensora de los inmigrantes, Betsy no tiene miedo de los cambios federales y cree que mientras sigamos educando a los demás y a nosotros mismos, y entendiendo las nuevas regulaciones,

todavía podemos concentrarnos en construir una región más inclusiva y acogedora. Una iniciativa que pretende hacer de St. Louis la región de más rápido crecimiento en la nación en el 2020.

Un objetivo que se alcanzó en 2015, gracias al crecimiento de la población extranjera nacida en St. Louis, en un 8,9 por ciento. Un porcentaje que contrastaba con los bajos números de los últimos años y colocó a St. Louis como la región de más rápido crecimiento entre las veinte mayores áreas metropolitanas de la nación. Un esfuerzo dirigido por el comité de dirección del Proyecto Mosaic, voluntarios y embajadores.

El plan es continuar con su misión independientemente de los desafíos que las nuevas leyes y regulaciones podrían traer.

El enfoque, como dijo Betsy, es continuar educando y asesorando a estudiantes y profesionales sobre las oportunidades de construir su carrera o abrir nuevos negocios.

Para lograr esto, el Proyecto Mosaic ha creado nuevos programas que proporcionan recursos

e información en inglés y español. El proyecto Mosaic también ha contratado a una nueva directora hispano hablante de consultoría a tiempo parcial, Susan Sierra, que se centrará en asesorar y consultar a profesionales y empresarios que quieran quedarse e invertir en la región.

“Vamos a trabajar más con el emprendimiento de inmigrantes ... esto va a ser un área muy fuerte de crecimiento para nuestra región ... atraer y mantener a la gente aquí y ayudarlos a hacer crecer su negocio y ampliar su contratación. Esa continuará siendo nuestra fortaleza “. - dice Betsy con confianza, acerca de los planes del Proyecto Mosaic para este año.

Para Betsy, es muy importante que nuestra región continúe movilizándose. Nuestra defensa más fuerte es continuar con la misión de hacer de St. Louis una ciudad acogedora.

Su programa de Embajadores, donde los residentes de la ciudad abren sus puertas a los recién llegados, continúa creciendo, haciendo más fácil difundir el mensaje y adaptar esas ideas como propias para implementarlas en sus rutinas diarias.

“Hay que movilizar a la gente para que la región sea acogedora y solidaria con los nacidos en el extranjero y los recién llegados.

Así que creo que lo que pueden hacer en su

vecindario, en la escuela o con su congregación es movilizarse, educarse, ser proactivo, son todas las cosas que podemos animar a la gente a hacer“- explica Betsy.

El primer estudio del Proyecto Mosaic fue financiado en 2012 por la Fundación William T. Kemper. El Dr. Jack Strauss creó el informe “El impacto económico de la inmigración en St. Louis”. Las conclusiones fueron que las regiones comparables a St. Louis tienen un crecimiento económico más fuerte al recibir a más inmigrantes, ofreciéndoles oportunidades para construir y crear. La iniciativa es parte de la Sociedad de Desarrollo Económico de St. Louis, World Trade Center St. Louis Contrario a lo que muchos creen, los residentes nacidos en el extranjero revitalizan nuestra economía al abrir nuevos negocios y crear nuevos puestos de trabajo, señaló el Dr. Strauss en el informe “El impacto económico de la inmigración en St. Louis”. Los hallazgos del Dr. Strauss fueron que el 60% de los residentes nacidos en el extranjero tienen más probabilidades de ser empresarios que la

población nacida en los Estados Unidos, el 44% tienen más probabilidades de tener educación universitaria y 3 veces más probabilidades de ser altamente calificados.

El Proyecto Mosaic de St. Louis trabaja actualmente con diferentes organizaciones de la región, como el Instituto Internacional, la Cámara Hispana y The Arch Grants, para generar diferentes oportunidades para que los residentes nacidos en el extranjero se conecten y construyan su negocio. El proyecto St Louis Mosaic es parte de un plan de desarrollo económico regional masivo que se expande en nuevas formas de educar y promover el espíritu empresarial a través de la innovación. La visión es reconstruir el país, como se hizo mucho antes; Un mosaico de diversidades culturales- la idea que dio nombre a la organización.

St Louis, A Mosaic of Cultural Diversity

By Shadia Habeych When I first met with Betsy Cohen, Executive Director for the Mosaic Project, it was back in 2013. At the time, the organization was new and the initiative was still an ambitious plan to help St Louis grow and prosper. Since then Betsy has participated in multiple events where she has been able to deliver a message of innovation through inclusion.

Before the Mosaic project, Betsy worked at Nestle Purina in St Louis for several years where she achieved the role of Vice-president.

During her work at Nestle, she also launched and led a St Louis regional coalition. In 2013, Betsy was called to assume the role as the Director of the Mosaic Project, an initiative that aimed to make St Louis the fastest growing Metropolitan region. Betsy, with the Mosaic Project has been able to reach millions, not only at a regional level, but also national, attracting newcomers from all over the country and world, to invest in the St Louis region. Being from Colombia, myself, the initiative was exciting and encouraging.

An idea that has been contradicted by many who believe foreign talent brings a negative

impact to our community and economy.

Through facts, new programs and information, The Mosaic Project has been able to, not only reach their goals, but also open many minds, changing perspectives and making St Louis a more welcoming and inclusive region.

Organizations like Mosaic have a mission to build back the country, region by region, with the idea that once built The United States: welcoming people from all over the globe to work together towards a common goal- build their American dream.

At the same time St Louis being one of the slowest growing cities in population, with an aging workforce and a continuous migration from young professionals, Foreign-born residents and newcomers have become the key answer to building back the region’s inhabitants and economy.

With the many federal changes where many immigrants fear their future in the United States, regions like St Louis continue to nurture the efforts of such organizations like the Mosaic Project that aims to attract foreignborn entrepreneurs and skilled workers in order to invest and use their talent in the city as part of a national economic project.

As an ambassador and advocate for immigrants, Betsy is not afraid of the Federal changes and believes that while we continue to educate others and ourselves and understand the new regulations, we can still focus on building a more inclusive and welcoming region.An initiative that aims to make of St Louis the fastest growing region in the nation by 2020.

A goal that was reached in 2015 by growing St Louis foreign-born population by 8.9 percent.A percentage that contrasted the

low numbers from past years and placed St Louis as the fastest growing region among the top twenty largest metropolitan areas in the nation. An effort led by the Mosaics Project steering committee, volunteers and ambassadors.

The plan is to continue with their mission regardless of the challenges the new laws and regulations might bring. The focus, as Betsy said, was to continue educating and advising students and professionals about the opportunities to build their career or open new businesses. As part of this, the Mosaic Project has created new programs that provide resources and information in English and Spanish. The Mosaic Project has also hired a new Spanish part-time consulting director, Susan Sierra, who will be focusing on advising and consulting with professionals and entrepreneurs who want to stay and invest in St Louis.

“We will be working more with immigrant entrepreneurship… this is going to be a very strong area of growth for our region… for both attracting and retaining people here and helping them to grow their business with expanded hiring. That will continue to be our strong area”. – says Betsy confidently about the Mosaics Project’s plans for this year.

For Betsy, it is very important for our region to continue being mobilized. Our strongest defense is to continue with the mission to make St Louis a welcoming city. Their Ambassador program, where residents of the city open their doors to new comers, continues to grow, making it easy to spread the message and adapt those ideas as their own to implement them in their daily routines.

“People have to be mobilized to make the region welcoming and supportive to the foreign born and new comers in our region.

So I think that what they can do alone, or what they can do in their neighborhood or at school or with their congregation is to be mobilized, educated, proactive, these are all things we can encourage people to do” – explains Betsy.

The Mosaic Project first study was funded in 2012 by the William T Kemper foundation.

Dr. Jack Strauss created the “The economic Impact of Immigration in St Louis” report. The conclusions were that regions comparable

to St Louis have a stronger economy growth when hosting more immigrants, offering them opportunities to build and create. The initiative is part of the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership, World Trade Center- St. Louis Contrary to what many believe, foreign- born residents invigorate our economy by opening new businesses and creating new jobs. Dr. Strauss noted in the report “The economic Impact of Immigration in St Louis�. Dr. Strauss findings were that 60 % of foreign-born residents are more likely to be entrepreneurs than the native born population, 44 % are more likely to have, at least, a college education, and 3 times more likely to be high skilled.

The St Louis Mosaic Project is currently working with different organizations around the region, as the International Institute, Hispanic Chamber and The Arch Grants, to generate different opportunities for foreign-born residents to network and build their business. The St Louis Mosaic project is only part of a massive regional economic development plan that expands on new ways to educate and promote entrepreneurship through innovation. The vision is to build the country back, as it was done long before; a mosaic of cultural diversities- the idea that named the organization.

LA MANO DE OBRA HISPANA NOS AYUDA A REALIZAR EL SUEÑO AMERICANO

C

omo propietario de una pequeña empresa, he experimentado muchas dificultades a través de los años, y no fue hasta hace poco que experimenté la más difícil de todas. En los últimos doce años nuestra empresa ha tenido un crecimiento continuo y estaba orgulloso. Pero en el último año, sin embargo, hemos batallado tratando de encontrar trabajadores que se sientan orgullosos del trabajo que se les pide que realicen. Ha sido todo un reto contar con individuos que vengan a trabajar todos los días. El orgullo en uno mismo es una de esas cosas que si “no usas, perderás” y es muy difícil de recuperar.

La comunidad hispana en su conjunto está floreciendo con orgullo en sí misma. Los inmigrantes de los países hispanos son padres, madres, hijos e hijas, primos, tías y tíos. Todos ellos simplemente están tratando de proporcionar una mejor vida para sus familias. Me siento orgulloso de proporcionar puestos de trabajo para aquellos que ven el beneficio de aprender un oficio que les permita brindarle a sus familias una vida estable.

El sueño americano se gana, nadie te lo da. Aquellos que se han dado cuenta de esto no han llegado a esa conclusión sin trabajo duro, sacrificio y determinación. Ser un inmigrante hispano demuestra que se tiene lo que se necesita para realizar el sueño americano. Los inmigrantes que están decididos a tener una vida mejor, han sacrificado todo y han trabajado duro para llegar aquí.

Puedo decir que los admiro y estaría encantado de contratar a cualquiera de ellos.

Soy un americano orgulloso con la esperanza de hacer realidad mi sueño americano. Espero que las personas a las que empleo también quieran lograr esto. Algunos quieren ser ricos y famosos. Otros sólo esperan que se les dé una oportunidad justa y equitativa para vivir sin el temor de no saber de dónde vendrá su próxima comida o cómo van a pagar por ella. Una vez que han ahorrado un poco de dinero pueden empezar a pensar en su jubilación o en la educación universitaria de sus hijos.

Como padres, todo lo que deseamos es proporcionar mejores oportunidades para nuestros hijos, un hogar mejor, educación, un futuro mejor. Quiero que mi hijo esté tan orgulloso de mí como yo de él. Cada día pienso en él antes de decidir sobre cómo proceder en la vida. No quiero que mi hijo sufra los pecados de su padre. Es por eso que soy un defensor abierto de los inmigrantes trabajadores y sus familias. Todo el mundo tiene derecho a las mismas oportunidades, independientemente de su procedencia. Después de todo, los niños son por los que la mayoría de nosotros estamos trabajando.

As a small business owner, I have experienced a lot of hardships through the years. It wasn’t until recently that I experienced the most difficult of all hardships. Over the past twelve years our company has experienced continued growth. I was proud.

In the past year though, it has been an enduring battle trying to find workers who are proud of the work they are asked to perform. It has been a battle relying on these individuals to show up every day. Pride in self is one of those things that if “you don’t use, you will lose” and it is very difficult to recover.

The Hispanic community as a whole is surging with pride in their selves. Immigrants from Hispanic countries are fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, cousins, aunts, and uncles. They are all simply trying to provide a better life for their families.

I am proud to provide jobs for those who see the benefit of learning a trade that can provide their families a lifetime of stability. The American Dream is earned it is not given. Those who have realized this have not done so without hard work, sacrifice, and determination. Being a Hispanic immigrant proves that they have what it takes to realize the American Dream. Immigrants who were determined to have a better life have sacrificed everything and worked hard to get here! I can say that I am very impressed and would be pleased to hire anyone of them.

I am a proud American with dreams of realizing the American Dream. I hope that the people I employ are also hoping to realize this. For some, they hope to be rich and famous. For others they only hope to be given a fair and equal opportunity to simply live without fear of where their next meal comes from or how they will pay for it. Once they have saved some money they can then start to save for retirement or for their children’s college education. As a parent all any of us want is provide better opportunities for our children, a better home, education, a better future. I want my son to be as proud of me as I am of him. Every day I think of him before I decide on a how I proceed in life. I do not want my son to suffer the sins of his father. That is why I am an outspoken advocate of working immigrants and their families. Everyone is entitled to the same opportunities regardless of where they come from.

After all, the children are the ones who most of us are working for anyway.

Those that feel like the world is against them but don’t back down, have heart. These are the type of worker any company would be proud to employ.

nna Crossling ha estado trabajando para el Instituto Internacional de St. Louis desde 1978, ayudando a millones de refugiados e inmigrantes a adaptar sus vidas en la ciudad y los Estados Unidos.

Anna también está involucrada con varias organizaciones como el Proyecto Mosaic de St. Louis, la Comisión de Derechos Humanos de Missouri y el Comercio Regional de St. Louis, entre muchas otras organizaciones que buscan dar la bienvenida y ayudar a los inmigrantes. The International Institute – Advocating Diversity In St Louis

nna Crossling has been working for the International Institute of St. Louis since 1978, helping millions of refugees and immigrants to assimilate their lives in St Louis and The United States. Anna is also involved with various organization as the St Louis Mosaic Project, the Missouri Commission of Human Rights and the St Louis Regional Commerce, among many other organizations that aim to welcome and help immigrants.

During her work at the Institute, Crossling has helped refugees of war from Vietnam, as well as, thousands of Bosnians that moved to St Louis after the rupture of Yugoslavia.

With her extensive and proactive work towards immigration and refugees, Crossling supports the efforts of many that are trying to open the doors to those in need to start a new life away from war and the hardships of other countries. Her work at the International Institute has helped thousands to find the resources and tools to adapt and live their American dream in St Louis; from teaching the new comers to speak the language to creating different programs that help the immigrant make St Louis their home.

Crossling new battle has been the arduous ban on refugees coming to the country. Since 2011, Syria has suffered a civil war were, daily, hundreds of civilians are losing their lives, homes and families. As a country that was built on immigration, serving as a safe place for those escaping hardship, war or looking for better opportunities, Crossling has dedicated her life to work along that principle. With the new changes at the federal level, her mission has become more challenging, since hundreds of refugees have been denied the entrance to United States indefinitely.

The International Institute of St. Louis opened the doors to Immigrants since 1916 in response to the growing multicultural communities of the United States. The Institute is part of a larger governmental network dedicated to welcome and help immigrants and refugees assimilate to the American culture. For years, the Institute has offered different services and programs, including English classes, refugee resettlement, job placement, citizenship, small business development, and housing among others.

Anna Crossling has led the Institute since 1978. Her work continues to affect thousands of lives and families in the region of St. Louis.

Despite the new Laws and regulations imposed by the government of Donald Trump, Crossling continues to protect and help immigrants to come and stay in St. Louis, believing that immigration allows us to grow and compete in a global market.

RL: How President Trump’s executive orders are affecting the diverse community of St Louis?

A. C: Confusion and fear, especially since the details are changing daily as a result of lawsuits and clarifying regulations from government officials.

RL: What are the benefits that diversity in general brings to the community as a whole?

A.C: Diversity of culture helps our nation be stronger and more in-step with an increasingly diverse world. The diversity also results in a growing economy for all. Immigrants bring skills and education and result in more entrepreneurs who build businesses and create jobs. They buy goods and services from other St. Louisans building other businesses as well.

And immigrants and refugees pay taxes and strengthen the community’s infrastructure.

AC: Speak up and exercise your right to Free Speech. Peaceful rallies and marches, petitions, letters and calls to our elected officials are all important. It is also important that all of us seek to preserve the organizations that fight for us by donating time and money.

RL: What do you consider is the biggest challenge the community faces in St Louis and the rest of the country?

AC: For at least a generation now there has been a growing divide among Americans, not always based on actual declining wages and stature but on the FEAR among some that they and their families are going to suffer. We must address issues of income and education inequity to lower the level of fear so that all members of communities are willing to start talking and working with each other again.

RL: Why do you think this is the time for diversity?

AC: It is always time for diversity. But right now we need to work harder than usual to defend that right because we have someone in the White House who has expressed distain for people of other countries and color.

RL: Can you leave a message for those who are afraid of the worst and are losing the hope in the American Dream?

RL: Why is it important to protect those who come from different countries, AC: The fact that we can still protest unequal treatment and shine the light on such inequities cultures, religions or ideologies? is an example of how the American Dream still AC: America was founded by people who lives. DEFENDER A LOS INMIGRANTES

UN ACTO DE ESPERANZA Y REBELDÍA Por Isabel Día del Castillo

E

n tiempos como estos donde la incertidumbre y en algunos casos la desesperanza se apodera de muchos, especialmente tras las medidas que pretende implementar el gobierno del presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald J. Trump, y que afectan directamente a los inmigrantes, resulta refrescante y conmovedor encontrarse de frente con el apoyo de ciudadanos americanos, que han tomado como suya la causa de defender y promover los derechos de estas poblaciones.

Al ser periodista extranjera,es inevitable no tener una fascinación natural para conocer a fondo este movimiento social que se está gestando. Así que decidí acompañar a los miembros de la organización Indivisible St. Louis, en cabeza de Anne Danis, quienes convocaron el primer Plantón en pro de inmigrantes y refugiados a comienzos de este mes frente a la oficina del senador republicano por el estado de Missouri, Roy Blunt.

Al llegar al punto de encuentro habían unas cincuenta personas, pero caminando hacia las oficinas del senador se nos unieron al menos mil personas de todas las edades, géneros y nacionalidades. Algunos habían sacrificado su hora de almuerzo para apoyar la iniciativa. Le pregunto a Anne si se esperaba tanta gente, me dice emocionada: “¡No! Esperaba como a 100 personas, no esperaba esto, es abrumador...

Pero es porque a la gente le importa, la gente ama este país, estamos aquí por amor”.

Termina sus palabras con una sonrisa de optimismo y victoria.

Después de estar un rato cantando consignas, como “No a la restricción, no al muro, América es la casa de todos”, Anne y un grupo de diez personas, algunos inmigrantes, algunos profesionales que trabajan con poblaciones de refugiados, algunos amigos y descendientes de sobrevivientes de tragedias como el

holocausto, ingresaron a las oficinas del senador para presentar su petición formal, contar sus historias, y me conceden el gran privilegio de acompañarlos.

Nos escoltan policías de Seguridad Nacional, y nos explican el protocolo.

Uno de ellos rompe el hielo diciendo: “Oh wow, ustedes se ven muy peligrosos” y todo el tiempo nos dio una gran sonrisa, todos sonreímos con él, su amabilidad nos hizo sentir tranquilos y cómodos.

Ya arriba nos recibe Mary Beth Luna Wolf, Directora de Oficina del Distrito y representante del senador. Ingresamos a un salón de juntas y rápidamente, tras una calurosa bienvenida de Luna, uno a uno empiezan a contar sus historias. La primera es una chica que trabajó en los campos de refugiados en Europa, y ahora trabaja con refugiados en St. Louis, luego personas de diferentes nacionalidades africanas y asiáticas hablan sobre sus casos específicos. Entre ellas una doctora que actualmente trabaja en un importante hospital de la ciudad y que a pesar de llevar muchos años aquí no ha podido cambiar su recidencia y teme que las restricciones le afecten para salir del país.

También un investigador contó cómo su proyecto para realizar un estudio sobre problemas respiratorios en poblaciones de refugiados recién llegados a la ciudad, se vio estropeado por la restricción inicial del gobierno Trump.

Pero sin duda lo que más hizo eco en mí, fueron las palabras de un hombre de aproximadamente mi edad que dijo: “Desde el 11 de Septiembre, mis padres decidieron que no le podíamos decir a nadie que éramos musulmanes, lo hemos escondido por años, teníamos miedo a que eso nos perjudicara FEBRERO 2017 / www.redlatinastl.com /

en nuestra escuela o trabajo”. Para mí eso fue bastante fuerte, me ubiqué a mí misma en el 11 de septiembre del 2001. Tenía 16 años y cursaba décimo grado de bachillerato en Colombia, recuerdo perfectamente ese día cuando mi profesora de Ciencias Sociales vino al salón de clases a contarnos sobre los atentados en Nueva York. Recuerdo llegar a casa y encontrar a mi mamá llorando viendo las noticias. Si a nosotros que estábamos a miles de kilómetros de distancia nos impactó tanto y nos llenó de miedo, no quiero imaginar la angustia de una familia musulmana en este país, aún más, de un joven adolescente al que inclusive se le pide que esconda sus creencias para protegerse del odio de los demás, y pasar su vida así, con ese temor por dentro. ¡Cuánto daño hacen los estereotipos a la humanidad!

Era la única hispana en la reunión, así que me pidieron que dijera algo en nombre de mi comunidad. Me dio un vacío en el estómago, qué gran responsabilidad. ¿Cómo resumes en dos minutos las cualidades, necesidades y temores de tanta gente? Empecé a hablar desde mi profesión, los muchos mensajes que recibimos de personas preocupadas por un

rumor de un retén de la policía, o preguntando por lo que les va a pasar. Y mientras hablaba, los rostros de muchas personas maravillosas que he conocido desde que llegué por primera vez a este país en 2009, pasaron por mi mente.

Natasha la puertorriqueña que me traía arroz con frijoles a mi trabajo en Chicago, Antonio que se arrastró por 12 horas debajo de unos alambres en la frontera para poder entrar a este país, mi colega María que tuvo que abandonar su profesión para volverse niñera en Nueva York. Mis amigas DACAmented, mis amigos que van a la universidad, los que trabajan para importantes compañías como Boeing, o para Nestlé. Todos, desde la señora que nos sirve los tacos en Cherokee, hasta los profesionales que nos orientan en la Cámara de Comercio, a todos los recordé con una sonrisa y entendí que todos teníamos algo en común: éramos buenas personas, todos trabajábamos muy duro para salir adelante, lo único que hemos querido hacer es progresar y hacer de este país un lugar mejor para gente como nosotros.

Hablé por los Dreamers, por Antonio, por Lisbeth, por Cecilia, por todos los que no se han rendido y le aportan su mano de obra, ingresos y talentos a este país. Me emocioné, mi voz se quebró y mis ojos se llenaron de lágrimas. Veo

a Anne al otro lado del cuarto asentando con su cabeza y con sus ojos encharcados, los miro a todos y veo en sus ojos esa mirada compasiva y solidaria, ellos se sienten igual, sus amigos y ellos mismos han vivido la misma situación.

Entonces entiendo que esto no es acerca de ninguna raza, de ninguna profesión, esto es acerca de la humanidad, somos uno, somos lo mismo.Y ya sé que suena cliché y lo repetimos todo el tiempo: “somos hermanos”, “todos somos ciudadanos del mundo”, pero una cosa es decirlo, otra es experimentarlo, sentirlo de verdad, y ese día tuve la fortuna de vivirlo.

Abandonamos la oficina del senador con la promesa de volver. Le pregunto a Anne, ¿Por qué decidiste hacer esto? Y me dice “lo que pasó con la restricción no sonaba como América para mí, estaban excluyendo a la gente y diciendo que no podían entrar, que teníamos que mantenerlos afuera, y eso no es lo que significa este país para mí, América somos todos, somos más fuertes juntos”.

Sigo preguntando, ¿Crees que esto que hicimos hoy, va a ayudar a cambiar las cosas? Y ella me dice: “eso espero, si seguimos trabajando, tiene que pasar. Mira toda esta gente, ¡No estamos solos!”.

Le digo a Anne que hay mucha gente preocupada por su futuro en la comunidad hispana y me

dice: “No estén asustados, no están solos, hay más de mil personas paradas aquí por ustedes, por todos nosotros. No pueden perder la esperanza, yo la había perdido hasta que empecé esto y ahora mira…lo que hace grande a este país es su gente, cada rostro, sea afroamericano, musulmán, judío, hispano, católico, lo que sea, todos estamos en la misma vasija, todos somos inmigrantes”.

ara esta edición, queremos enfocarnos en el color, la sencillez y los estilos eclécticos que complementan el vestuario de cada mujer de hoy. Para esto, no hay nadie mejor que Nasheli Juliana una diseñadora puertorriqueña que está moviendo el mundo de la moda con sus diseños revolucionarios que, como ella dice, están inspirados en temas sociopolíticos.

Nasheli nació en Caguas Puerto Rico. Desde muy joven su interés por el diseño y el arte la han inspirado a iniciar una carrera como arquitecta, que más tarde cambió debido a su pasión por trabajar con sus manos.

Como diseñadora, Nasheli ha trabajado con diseñadores internacionalmente conocidos como Emernegildo Zegna de Italia e Hipólito Peña de República Dominicana. En 2003, Nasheliempezó trabajar en sus propios diseños y en 2013, comenzó como profesora de Lidenwood University en el programa de diseño de moda.

Su trabajo ha sido mostrado en diferentes desfiles de moda en los Estados Unidos.

Recientemente trabajó con el escultor Emilio Maldonado en Politics of Exchange, un espectáculo que representa la opresión de la guerra y las cuestiones sociales que influenciaron a los dos artistas. Para Nasheli su mayor inspiración fue la situación socio-política de Puerto Rico en la que utilizó elementos de la Guerra de Vietnam, expresando un ejército de fashionistas y mujeres independientes. Su trabajo está expuesto en este momento en la Universidad Webster.

Los diseños de Nasheli son una combinación de simplicidad con elaboradas formas arquitectónicas. Para la diseñadora es muy importante crear textura y diseños tridimensionales que expresen sus antecedentes y sentimientos. Su objetivo es crear diseños únicos para las mujeres de hoy, manteniendo la comodidad como prioridad, pero destacando el papel de la mujer en la sociedad y en el mundo.

Cuando se le preguntó a Nasheli acerca de lo que vamos a ver más en los estilos de este año, ella predijo un regreso de los 90s, con el uso de mezclillas y colores brillantes como verde y amarillo.

“Después del invierno todos queremos ver los colores” - dice Nasheli.

Nasheli Juliana ve la moda como un escape para la mujer y una razón influyente en la liberación y la revolución femenina. Para ella,

or this edition, we want to focus on color, simplicity and eclectic styles that complements the wardrobe of every today’s woman. For this, there is no one better than Nasheli Juliana, a Puerto Rican designer that is stirring the world of fashion with her revolutionary designs that, as she says, are inspired in socio-political issues.

Nasheli was born in Caguas Puerto Rico. From a very young age, her interest in design and art inspired her to start a career as an architect, which she later changed due to her passion to work with her hands. As a designer, Nasheli has worked with internationally known designers as Emernegildo Zegna from Italy and Hipólito Peña from The Dominican Republic. In 2003, Nasheli stated working in her own designs and in 2013, she started as a professor for Lidenwood University in the Fashion design program.

Her work has been shown in different fashion shows around the United States. Recently she worked with sculptor Emilio Maldonado in Politics of Exchange, a show that represents the oppression of war and social issues that influenced the two artist. For Nasheli her biggest inspiration was the socio-political situation of Puerto Rico in which she used elements of the Vietnam War, expressing an army of fashionista and independent women.

Their work is exposed right now in Webster University.

Nasheli designs are a combination of simplicity with elaborate architectural shapes. For the designer is very important to create texture and tri-dimensional designs that expresses her background and sentiments. Her goal is to create unique designs for today’s women keeping comfort as priority, but highlighting the role of the woman in society and the world.

When asked Nasheli about what we are going to see most in this year’s styles, she predicted a 90s come back with the use of denim and bright colors as green and yellow.

Nasheli Juliana sees fashion as an escape for woman and an influential reason in the women’s liberation and revolution. For her Coco Channel gave woman a ticket out of old convictions and restrictions.

Her designs are one of a kind and are designs specially done for the client. Nasheli calls this, slow but durable fashion. She is also creating a ready to wear line that is being made in Mexico and it is available through her website.

Empoderando a La Comunidad Por Medio De La Educación

L

a comunidad LGBTQ de St. Louis es una de las más grandes y más fuertes de los Estados Unidos. Los miembros juegan un papel importante en el desarrollo de la región, desempeñando empleos influyentes y movilizando a la comunidad hacia un objetivo común: la igualdad y la inclusión.

A lo largo de la historia de la comunidad LGBTQ, muchas organizaciones han sido creadas con el objetivo de apoyar y dar la bienvenida a sus miembros, trayendo conciencia al mundo acerca de sus derechos.

Diez años después de las incursiones de Stonewall Inn, en 1980, St. Louis creó su primer desfile del orgullo gay durante el mes de junio. El comité de eventos creó entonces Pride STL una organización sin fines de lucro y que opera sólo con voluntarios, que planea y organiza Pride Fest cada año. La organización ubicada en el centro de la ciudad, está formada por un grupo de personas creativas que ponen su tiempo para organizar diferentes eventos y programas que informen, aconsejen, den apoyo y acojan a la comunidad. La instalación es una gran sala que cuenta con un centro de computación, centro de televisión, biblioteca y un espacio para las reuniones de la comunidad, que le convierte que en una acogedora casa con sus puertas abiertas para cualquier persona que desee aprovechar la instalación.

En este lugar es donde me reuní con Leon Braxton, director de diversidad e inclusión de Pride STL. Leon tiene una fuerte presencia y una sonrisa encantadora, cree que la educación es la clave para detener la injusticia.

Braxton tiene una historia extensa abogando y trabajando para la comunidad LGBTQ por 30 años. Ella ha ocupado diferentes cargos en diferentes organizaciones LGBTQ incluyendo The Vital Voice, una revista para la comunidad.

Además, Braxton trabaja continuamente con diferentes organizaciones, ferias universitarias y recaudando fondos para becas que cada año se otorgan durante el Pride Fest.

Como individuo muy positiva, Braxton, al hablar de diversidad, cree que una comunidad diversa es una comunidad más fuerte cuando trabajamos juntos. Ella asegura que los diferentes cambios a nivel federal que han generado temor a varios, sólo nos han llevado a ser más fuertes juntos.

En St. Louis, hemos visto muchas marchas, protestas pacíficas y conversaciones comunitarias, después de la prohibición del Gobierno y otras órdenes ejecutivas. Para

Braxton la comunidad diversa de la región se está organizando y trabajando juntos para construir una resistencia que hasta ahora ha traído cambios positivos a nuestro favor.

Nuestra conversación se centró en los beneficios de una comunidad diversa donde Braxton amplió sus pensamientos sobre cómo la diversidad hace prosperar una ciudad ya que todos trabajamos juntos hacia un objetivo común “construir una comunidad mejor”. Las ventajas, explicó, son simples, al ser procedentes de diferentes mundos, culturas, con diferentes orígenes y situaciones

económicas, contribuimos de muchas maneras a la sociedad, la economía y el crecimiento de St. Louis.

“Lo que tenemos que hacer es educar a todos sobre las diferencias que cada grupo tiene, aceptarse y entender que a veces no estamos de acuerdo en todo, pero somos como todos ...” - dice León.

En su trabajo como defensora de la comunidad LGBTQ, Braxton considera que el mayor reto que tiene es el odio que sentimos por los demás.

Redireccionar esa discriminación a través de la educación y la comprensión, continúa siendo

su mayor pelea.

Sin embargo, Braxton examina las situaciones actuales con una mente abierta y positiva argumentando que si nos mantenemos unidos, la tormenta pasará como ha sucedido en el pasado. Para ella, la mayor resistencia a la intolerancia es seguir trabajando duro por lo que cree y en el proceso de tocar y abrir otras mentes y corazones.

“La educación es nuestra mayor arma en la lucha contra la intolerancia” - concluyó Leon citando a Nelson Mandela.

Pride St Louis - Empowering Through Education

T

he LGBTQ community of St Louis is one of the biggest and strongest in the United States. Members play important roles in the development of the region, holding influential jobs and mobilizing the community towards a common goal: equality and inclusion.

Throughout the history of the LGBTQ community, many organizations have been created with the aim to support and welcome its members, bringing awareness to the world about their rights.

Ten years after the Stonewall Inn raids, in 1980, St Louis created its first pride parade during the month of June. The event committee then created Pride STL a non-profit and only volunteer’s organization that plans and organizes Pride Fest every year. The organization located in mid-town is made of a group of creative individuals who put in their time creating different events and programs that inform, consul, support and welcome the community.

The facility is a large room that counts with a computer center, television center, library and plenty of space for community meetings, making it in to a cozy home with its doors open for anyone who would like to take advantage of the facility.

At this place is where I met with Leon Braxton, director of the diversity and inclusion of Pride STL. Leon has a strong presence and a charming smile that believes education is the key to stop injustice. Braxton has an extensive history advocating and working for the LGBTQ community for 30 years. She has held different positions in different LGBTQ organizations including The Vital Voice, a magazine for the community. In addition, Braxton continuously works in the community outreach, working with different organizations, college fairs and

raising money for scholarships that every year are awarded during the Pride Fest.

As a very positive individual, Braxton, when talking about diversity, believes that a diverse community is a stronger community when we work together. She assures that the different changes at a federal level that have arisen fear to several, has only brought us stronger together.

In St Louis, alone we have seen many different walks, peaceful protest and community talks, after the Government’s ban and other executive orders. To Braxton the diverse community of the region is organizing and working together to build a resistance that so far has brought positive changes in our favor.

Our conversation centered in the benefits of a diverse community where Braxton expanded her thoughts about how diversity makes a city prosper since we all work together towards a common goal “making the community better”. The advantages, she explained, were simple, we all come from different worlds, cultures, with different backgrounds and economic situations, and therefore we contribute in different ways to the society, economy and growth of St Louis.

“What we need to do is educate everyone about the differences each group has, accept each other and understand that sometimes we

don’t agree on everything, but we are just like everyone…” – says Leon.

During his work as an advocate for the LGBTQ community, Braxton considers that the biggest challenge we have face is the hate we feel for one another. Redirecting that discrimination through education and understanding continues to be his biggest fight.

Still Braxton looks at current situations with an open and positive mind arguing that if we stand together, the storm will pass as it has happened in the past. To her, the biggest resistance towards intolerance is continue working hard for what she believes and in the process touching and opening others minds and hearts.

Growth and Diversity on Par With Business Goals

(ST. LOUIS - Mo.) The face of America is transforming and the workplace is becoming more diverse than ever before. This is due to the increase in workforces prioritizing Diversity & Inclusion (DI) efforts.

This is a time where authenticity trumps assimilation. Pointing out what makes you different is what will catch employers attention. Flexibility and creativity are keys to making businesses more competitive in the growing markets. Hispanics are expected to represent 74 percent of labor force growth by 2020, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth.

Jose Ponce, President of Ponce Realty Group, explains that diversity inclusion efforts start from the top positions. He said that the pros of diversity are that it allows the company to be imbedded in the community better which allows for business growth.

“We want to see growth in business but also in diversity,” he said. “Saint Louis is traditionally conservative but with growth, we’re starting to make a footprint which will only make Saint Louis better.”

ReMax Gold is currently the largest Hispanic real estate company in the Saint Louis metropolitan area and region. They currently work with 90 independent contractors who highlight their uniqueness to try and attract niche markets in particular areas.

When the business reflects the community, there’s a better customer experience, Garcia points out.

“Success in the neighborhood is based off of treating people with respect because of their backgrounds,” he said.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis (HCCSTL) encourages employers to look towards diversifying their workplace.

They host events like their annual job fair—this year held on February 23rd, 2017.

A

ll Access CDS (Consumer Directed Services) is an agency that works with MO Health Net/Medicaid to provide attendant service to seniors and individuals with disabilities, enabling them to live independently.

Its participants are trained to hire their own attendants to assist them with daily tasks.

We spoke with Margarita Gómez The coordinator of this program for the Hispanic 29

community, she explain more about All Access.-The elderly and disabled have needs, weaknesses, mood swings, and mistrust among other circumstances that can best be handled by a family member or a friend. With the CDS program, the love ones can improve their physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness that only those who know their needs can provide.

The client (senior or disabled) is the boss who can choose and hire the person with whom they

feel most comfortable. These persons include family members that meet the guidelines set forth by the state of Missouri Medicaid and Compliance Unit. Through the support of its family and friends, the love ones are able to address and fulfill their needs, including cleaning, bathing, assist with toileting, grooming, and laundry just to name a few of the chores that MO HealthNet/Medicaid may approve for your loved one. La segunda cita es: “Dios me conceda la serenidad para aceptar las cosas que no puedo cambiar, el valor para cambiar las cosas que puedo y la sabiduría para saber la diferencia”. ou are very well known and appreciated in our community. All of us recognize you by your charisma and enthusiasm in life, but we also want to know where Eileen Wolfington comes from. Could you tell us more about yourself?

I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My mother was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and my dad is from Cidra, Puerto Rico. My husband Dan and I came to St. Louis in July of 1989 due to his job transfer. My twelve years of banking experience helped me to find a position in banking in St. Louis. I remained in the banking field for 33 years. In 2010, I accepted a position as a health promoter or community health worker at a non-profit clinic called Casa de Salud. That experience transformed my life and motivated me to dedicate my life toward coaching others to live a healthier lifestyle, one person at a time.

What’s has been your biggest contribution to the Hispanic Community in USA? There is a saying from the Bible that states, “To whom much is given, much is required.”

I feel that I have been blessed with exposure to many opportunities that have helped me 34 / FEBRERO 2017 / www.redlatinastl.com

to grow and to be a lifelong learner. Everything that I learn, I try to share with others with an emphasis on those who may lack access due to their socioeconomic background or immigration status. My biggest contribution has been enhancing the knowledge that individuals already possess by meeting them where they are. Motivating lowto-moderate income minorities and immigrants to become successful by enhancing their knowledge and access is my passion.

Do you think being Latina, had made a significant difference to other Hispanic professionals in metropolitan St. Louis?

In 2004, three Latino individuals got together to form a network of Latino and non-Latino professional social workers so that they could exchange ideas, challenges and best practices. While I am not a social worker, I worked with many of the families for whom these professionals already provided social services. At the time, I was in the banking industry and provided different financial services and education to the community and therefore I was welcomed to the group.

When the three founders took different paths, I became the primary facilitator of the network and the network continues to meet to this day. Known as the Professional Latino Action Network (PLAN), the network has afforded me the opportunity to expand my network beyond what I imagined. As a result, other Hispanic/Latino and non-Latino professionals have benefitted from attending the monthly network meetings. Individuals have promoted job opportunities, received jobs, promoted their services, received services, learned how to access the Latino community and/or expanded their network.

In a metropolitan area that is predominantly

African American and Caucasian, I feel that being Latina and facilitating a Latino/a network had made a difference for others.

What do you think is the biggest challenge our community is facing at this time?

The biggest challenge our community is currently facing is the uncertainty under the new administration. Without providing too much commentary and inclusively speaking, I feel that our Latino, immigrant and minority communities have an opportunity to unite more than ever before. We have to welcome, respect and embrace the unfamiliar, the person that is different from who we are. Together, we must advocate for the human rights of our immigrant and minority brothers and sisters and work toward keeping families together.

Could you give us a message for the young Latinas in our city to continue building their dreams without fear of failure?

There are two quotes and three spiritual lessons that I have found and have inspired me to be the person that I am today. I hope they will inspire our young Latinas. The first quote is: Be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant with the weak and wrong.

Sometime in our lives we have been all of these.” The second quote is: “God granted me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Dr. W. Brugh Joy, a physician who went through a life transformation, wrote the three spiritual lessons that I try to humbly practice each day. He said, “Make no comparisons, make no judgements and delete your need to understand.” When you strive to be who you are without comparing yourself to others, when you judge no one and accept people for who they are, and when you can delete the need to ask yourself why me, why now, why her and not me, why, why, why? – then you can begin to be the real you. Your beauty and intelligence is within you. Be diligent, be persistent, be passionate, and BE YOURSELF.

LA ESCENA DE LAS STARTUPS CRECE, PERO HACEN FALTA MÁS EMPRENDEDORES LATINOS

Desde hace varios años, la tecnología se ha ido convirtiendo en una aceleradora del crecimiento económico de diversas regiones alrededor del mundo. A través de figuras como las startups, emprendedores buscan la forma de no sólo generar ganancias, sino además de generar un impacto y brindar soluciones prácticas que mejoren la vida de las sociedades modernas.

St. Louis se ha convertido en una plataforma para startups, con la adjudicación de capital semilla y el apoyo de diferentes entidades como T-Rex, ITEN y Arch Grant, que le permiten a los emprendedores encontrar las herramientas para poder potencializar sus ideas de negocio, y lograr los objetivos exitosamente Tuvimos la oportunidad de dialogar con Francis Chmelir, Director Ejecutivo de ITEN, una organización sin fines de lucro que trabaja con startups de tecnologia, ayudándoles a encontrar su modelo de negocio y recaudar dinero, por lo que les preparan para presentarse ante posibles inversionistas, brindándoles un espacio seguro para practicar esa presentación antes de ir frente a inversores reales.

Actualmente ITEN desarrolla un programa con el que busca conectar a la comunidad de emprendedores tecnológicos con corporaciones locales para hacer una conexión entre startups tecnológicas y las empresas que buscan ideas innovadoras para mejorar sus procesos. Con 280 startups activas en el proceso, Francis explica sus objetivos.

“No le damos ningún dinero a la empresa directamente, no invertimos en las empresas, pero les ayudamos a encontrar a los inversionistas y al talento interno que podrían necesitar para hacer crecer su negocio. Muchas veces vienen a nosotros muy temprano y hay sólo una persona como fundadora, así que también necesitan encontrar un equipo. Tratamos de ayudarlos lo mejor que podemos para conectar con ese talento, basado en el ecosistema con el que hemos trabajado en los últimos diez años”.

Le preguntamos sobre los emprendedores tecnológicos de origen hispano en el programa, y afirma que sólo han tenido la participación de aproximadamente menos del 4% del total de aplicantes. Para Chmelir, las razones de por qué las startups latinas no se acercan tanto a este tipo de programas son aún un tema de investigación, pero reafirma su compromiso para abrirles las puertas, apoyarles y generar espacios de encuentros.

Por lo tanto, somos unos doce miembros en este colectivo, que queremos tener una mejor comprensión de cómo podemos ser más abiertos y acogedores a otras minorías sub-representadas y para las mujeres en las empresas.
