Elizabeth Borey ‘Gindi Girl’

iam: a jewellery maker

‘Gindi’ in my Jandai language means something good. I put a lot of love, time and effort into the making process to create a small handmade treasure for you, a memento of my beautiful island home. I use as many natural items as I can that I gather from country to enhance the design of each pendant. It is my hope that they bring you joy and connect you to Straddie’s marine life and native flora and fauna. My pendants reflect my fresh and salt water Quandamooka country - I am a Goenpul Nunukul Ngugi maker of Terrangee.

Valerie Clark

I descend from the Nunukul, Ngugi & Goenpul people of Quandamooka. I have had the privilege of growing up on Country - Minjerribah and this is where I draw inspiration. Quandamooka people have cared, protected and lived at one with our Country since time began. I aim to bring beautiful Bush and Sea Country onto fabric and into homes for all to enjoy and appreciate. 2

iam: an abstract painter

From early childhood creating art has accompanied me on my journey in life. Time in nature brings a sense of wellbeing to me, and as I step into my studio each day I enter my personal playground. A place for taking risks, letting go of attachments, and trying out new things which is all part of the joy of creating. My spirit laughs out loud at the freedom of breaking the rules and drawing outside the lines. I’m not sure who is in charge, me or my art. My process is intuitive, free and joyful. And presently Abstract! The materials I choose lead the way. My interest in travel influences my work, sometimes out loud, sometimes in the quiet whispers of memory.

My style evolves continually and I aim to keep each piece unique with as much life as possible that can be used and enjoyed on a daily basis.

Kaitlyn Townsend

iam: clay & watercolour artist

My art is a homage to the ocean’s influence, a force that has shaped my perspective and creativity. Growing up in Goompi (Dunwich), North Stradbroke Island, I was constantly enveloped by the ocean’s embrace. Its ever-changing moods and colours are echoed in my use of clay and watercolours. The fluidity of water and the earthiness of clay allow me to capture the essence of the sea and its surrounding nature. Each piece is a reflection of the ocean’s timeless beauty, aiming to evoke a sense of joy and wonder that only the sea can inspire.

Goompi Collective - 6 Ballow Rd, Dunwich ktownsendddd@gmail.com

Kathy Townsend

iam: a gyotaku artist

As a marine scientist, my art, “Island Gyotaku,” merges my passion for ocean conservation with the ancient Gyotaku technique. Inspired by Japanese fishermen and European scientists, I create unique impressions of marine species on shoji paper. Collaborating with local fishermen and researchers, each print is a record of a species, date, and location. Importantly, no life is taken solely for art; each fish is either caught for food or printed post-study. My art commemorates each marine life, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices.

Amanda Wood

iam: a fibre artist

I’m a fibre artist weaving both practical and sculptural pieces from the heart. Each piece is made from foraged or natural fibres and inspired by the island’s diverse, natural beauty.

I love bringing together natural textures and colours and adopt a variety of weaving styles. I also have a passion for experimenting with dyes and stains made from natural pigments of plant materials to add that extra little ‘something’ to my work.

Sandra Delaney

iam: language artist

Through my art practice, I look to the past (both historically and traditionally) to enrich a strong Quandamooka cultural continuity and to share knowledge with fellow creatives. As an artist and community member, I seek to draw in an audience who can grasp and comprehend the nuances of visual stories to strengthen culture and preserve knowledge from time past and into the present. This is paramount in my approach so that meaning and spirituality hold a significance that is mutually established and maintained, instead of just being only visual.

NSI Arts & Pottery Club

iam: a community club

The North Stradbroke Island Arts and Pottery Group Inc. was established in 1988 to provide opportunities for our local community to participate in arts and cultural activities. Our club fosters appreciation of community by drawing together and supporting members wishing to explore and learn new creative skills within a welcoming and kind environment.

Pottery is the perfect way to integrate self-care and creativity into your daily life, maintain one’s wellbeing, and alleviate anxiety, depression and stress. Pottery connects us back to the earth. Simply playing with clay and stimulating the pressure points in our hands can have therapeutic benefits. Clay also provides a natural way to connect with body and breath – the malleability and immediacy of the material naturally integrates the mind-body connection, something much needed in our often-hectic lives. Take a moment during the Arts Trail to Play With Clay in the old pottery’s garden! It’s fun for all ages. Browse our little shop of pottery goodies.

Straddie Brewing Co

iam: Brewing for Biodiverity

SIX ARTISTS | SIX SPECIES | SIX ORIGINAL DESIGNS

As part of National Science Week 2024, Straddie Brewing Co partnered with 6 local artists to highlight threatened species in our backyard, Moreton Bay.

Moreton Bay is a globally significant seascape with outstanding natural assets. Over 1,000 native animal species, many threatened, live in the region or rely on its diverse habitats during migration. Living on the doorstep of one of Australia’s fastest-growing population centres, many of these species face numerous threats and need our help.

The brewery’s Special Release Hazy Pale Ale features beautiful original artworks from six different local artists, each representing one of the threatened species.

Customers can scan the QR codes on the cans to learn more about each species, in addition to the work being done to better understand some of Moreton Bay’s most vulnerable species, the pressures on their survival, and what must be done to protect them.

Straddie Brewing Co will donate $10 from each carton sold to help protect Moreton Bay’s biodiversity via important conservation research. The original artworks will be on display, amongst the brewery tanks, for the duration of the Arts Trail. Free entry.

NSI Golf Club

iam: hosting the Minjerribah Photography Awards

Nestled into its beautiful bushland setting, east of Dunwich, you find The North Stradbroke Island Golf Club. Over many decades the Club has been developed and lovingly cared for by its volunteers, earning it several award nominations as one of the best small country golf courses in Australia.

The competition’s Open Section prize honours Minjerribah elders and North Stradbroke Island Golf Club founding members, the late Aunty Margaret and Uncle Pat Iselin. Aunty Margaret was the first golfer to score a hole in one on the 12th Hole, just after the course opened. Margaret Iselin was a long-standing chairwoman of the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders-in-Council and she and her husband Pat were instrumental in opening people’s hearts and eyes to the depth of Aboriginal knowledge and culture in the Island community.

The course, which is home to an abundance of wildlife including Eastern Grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, stone curlews and glossy-black cockatoos, is in full bloom with native flowers come late winter/early spring — and it is those FLOWERS which this year form the theme for the photography competition.

I am an artist, a drawer, a painter and a creator of clay, sculptural and functional. I take inspiration from my surroundings and nature particularly where I live at Amity (Pulan).

I am interested in creating beauty out of the ugliness of the controversial fishing line problem washing up and entangling amongst the fallen trees on our beautiful beaches and the bigger issues of turtles drowning in it and incorporating it in my work. I also sculpt, draw, shape and colour my work by inspiration from the raw and rough side of nature when creating hand built functional ware. My work is by feel, heart and integrity.

Colours, textures, light and sound, plants, animals and birds, ebb and flow of tide, marks left on the environment, the feel of sand and wind. Images drawn from these emerge in my designs.

I work mainly with silver, enamel and copper. I collect pieces from the beaches and the shapes and forms of these tiny things influence the designs on my bench. I enjoy playing with different techniques and learning new approaches to contemporary jewellery and metalsmithing.

This work presents images of two worlds, North Stradbroke Island, Australia and The Isle of Skye, Scotland. Although they are very different environments, located on opposite sides of the globe, these two locations exhibit a raw and emotive natural beauty that displays wild and understated qualities.

I am pursuing my passion for creating art which reflects and encourages contemplation of the ever-changing, cyclical and interconnected nature of Minjerribah /Terrangerri /North Stradbroke Island’s unique environment.

My watercolour and mixed media works aim to capture a sense of the incredible beauty and spirit I feel within the island’s flora and fauna, its land and seascapes.

iam: a visual artist

Minjerribah has inspired and infused my art, with its mesmerising scenery and beautiful colours, each season bringing new sights and experiences. These are evident in my whimsical art with its vibrant colours, and abstract placement of objects. Whilst I watch Minjerribah change I am reminded that every piece of artwork captures one individual moment, which is filled to the brim with emotions, and experienced differently by each individual.

The main mediums I use are acrylic paint on canvas, but I have come to express myself with other material as well, including timber and recycled objects.

WORKSHOP

My keen interest in pottery started 2 years ago. A journey which I have been under the watchful eye of Liz Ranger-Craven, from Craven Art. Being a sprightly 77 year old retired trained nurse, I have put my extra hours of attention and detail into pottery. My artistic flair has stemmed and grown from art and fashion, paper making, stained glass and designer pattern making. All these creative elements fuse together and I love discovering new textiles and evolving my pottery with attention and curiosity.

My impressive interpretations of marine creatures with my clay work is exciting and unfolding, which makes me extremely proud.

“Art

transcends cultural boundaries and acts as a strong binding force that unites people no matter where they are from,” says Indian artist Surabhi Gaikwad.

Discover Stradbroke is pleased and proud to partner with the Straddie Arts Trail for the next year. The organisers have a long term vision for the trail and we all see it as being a permanent year round offering in the coming years. Our supremely talented island artists provide residents and visitors with a unique window into our diverse community.

“Art” encompasses so many of the activities that island locals embrace to express ourselves be it music, painting, pottery, photography, graphics, weaving, jewellery making, cooking and the list goes on and on. Straddie “artists” originate from all corners of the island community and as such they are a glue that binds us together.

Holidays on the island have always been, and will always be, about family, and it is the ‘unpretentiousness’ that appeals and is most certainly the reason people visit again and again. Developing and supporting our artistic community will strengthen our community in the most sustainable way.

We look forward to seeing you out and about in August as we shine a light on everything that is wonderful about Straddie!

Tamara Armstrong

iam: a visual artist

I have been a maker for as long as I can remember and painting is my passion. Nature and colour provide the greatest amount of inspiration and I hope that my artwork uplifts viewers and provides collectors with a lifetime of joy. Walking through the streets of greenery around my home on Tamborine Mountain, and along the beautiful beaches of Minjerribahallows me to gather ideas for colour palettes that I then keep as records in my visual journals. I love bringing them to life on canvas. Each work is a timecapsule or portal to escape to when viewing.

Jennie Truman

iam: an visual artist

I am an island artist using paint and pencil to create images of my visual and sensual relationship with my island surroundings. The ever changing seascapes, rocky headlands, dunal grasses and windswept sands and inland creeks and bay mudflats are my inspirations. I use these landscapes to map the changing seasons and the birds and animals which migrate through it. Following the light and shade on the water, the cloud formations and the animal movements are really the keystones to what I see in my art, expressing the changes in colours and texture with acrylic paint in the summer and then working in pencil and ink for finer detailed work of mapping the rocks, shells and fish on paper in the winter.

Digging up the Past

Marie Kennedy

iam:

a visual artist

I was raised on Straddie and have a deep love of its beauty. Our first home at Point Lookout was a fibro cottage overlooking Main Beach, it was beautiful watching the storms come up from the South and I love painting stormy seascapes.

I have been painting for more than fifty years and will paint anything that inspires me, it might be the wild life of Straddie or florals and of course the ocean.

I paint with oils and one of the things I love about art is the learning process, each painting has its own challenges and joy in its creation.

The Headland

iam: Quandamooka Truth Embassy

The Point Lookout Headland is a sacred place. Since 2017, local Quandamooka Elders and community have been trying to stop the proposed development of a whale centre which would display whale bones on the headland at Point Lookout.

In February 2021, in the spirit of the Aboriginal Embassy (an ongoing political action started in Canberra in 1972), the Quandamooka Truth Embassy was established as a last resort to preserve the cultural heritage of North Stradbroke Island’s Point Lookout and prevent the incoming infrastructure of a whale mall that would house the bones of one of the largest whales to wash up naturally on Stradbroke shores. Visit and gain understanding to the cultural significance of The Headland and why our community wish for this sacred area to be protected.
