Zoe’s top pick! When I saw this gorgeous cover, I couldn’t help myself but try and recreate it. How’d I do? Shannon Hale’s Kind of a Big Deal could have slipped its way onto my ‘to be read’ list from the pretty cover alone! From adult fiction to graphic novels to picture books, it looks to me like Shannon Hale has just about done it all. When I realised this was the talented author behind so many popular children’s series (Squirrel Girl, The Princess in Black, Ever After High, Princess Academy – just to name a few!),
I had to see what she had in store for the young adult audience. This looks to be a brilliant take on the ‘coming of age’ narrative, where the young protagonist finds herself by escaping into the world of books (literally). This whimsical and playful read could be a great stepping stone book for children who are aging up and into young adult genres. Pop it on your reading list to check out!

First 5 Forever at the library The first few years of a baby’s life are a wonderful time for growth, development and learning. At Redland City Council Libraries, we know it’s never too early to enjoy reading with your baby. With more than a million new neural connections forming each second, your little one is always ready to learn1. Our First 5 Forever program creates experiences and opportunities that build strong emergent literacy foundations and life-long learning capabilities in all young children. We firmly believe that parents, caregivers and families are children’s first and most important educators. Our programs strive to support and equip families with helpful key messages and fun tips, creating a community that loves reading and learning together. Whether it’s in a library or in a beautiful park Pop up Library, all First 5 Forever sessions encourage listening, singing, imagination and meaningful social connections. We look forward to seeing you soon. All events are listed online at redland.qld.gov.au/LibraryWhatsOn
First 5 Forever tip: Sound hunt Encourage your little one to listen carefully for different sounds by going on a ‘sound hunt’. Find a squeaking sound, a chirping sound, a loud sound and a soft sound. You’ll be creating all kinds of brain connections!
