Emily’s top pick! Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley drops you into 18-year-old Daunis’ life just after she decides to stay in her hometown, instead of going away to college. A shocking murder fuelled by recent surges in drug-trafficking envelopes Daunis in an FBI investigation of a meth variant, possibly linked to the Sugar Island reservation. This book is a high stakes thriller, but also a multi-layered examination of identity, connection, and what it means to be Native American. The author, herself an Anishinaabe woman, depicts Anishinaabe culture and philosophy as a living tradition rather than the typical romanticised portrayals of Native Americans as people long gone. I recommend this excellent debut novel to anyone who likes thrillers with vivid language and details that make you think you’re in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as autumn approaches. The audiobook is also fantastic, especially for hearing Anishinaabe language used in context.
Firekeeper’s Daughter won the 2022 American Library Association’s Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature, and the Morris Award for Best Debut Novel. It’s been optioned as a miniseries for Netflix. Make sure to bump this one up on your reading list!

National Reconciliation Week A celebration of National Reconciliation Week from 27 May – 3 June 2022 Quandamooka Dance with Matt Burns 10.15 – 10.45am Thursday 26 May at Library Square, Capalaba Library Join us for a morning with Quandamooka Traditional Owner Matt Burns, as together we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. Kanara Malara – One People
The emu and kangaroo tracks represent the Australian Coat of Arms that Indigenous and non-Indigenous brothers-in-arms fought under, not forgetting the women who served also in the defence of our nation. The emu and kangaroo also represent the Indigenous marriage system, Emu People marry Kangaroo People and create a sacred relationship and are forbidden to fight or swear at one another and can’t say no to one another, keeping in mind that this relationship is reciprocal.

This artwork is the visual centrepiece of Redland City Council’s reconciliation efforts. Council’s inaugural internal Reconciliation Action Plan shares its name and its story hangs in many Council buildings. Kanara Malara – One People story as told by artist Josh Walker “The red triangle line work on the outside of the canvas represents the red earth, while the yellow circle patterns represent the sand and waters. The serpents in the middle of the emu and kangaroo tracks represent wisdom.
The concentric circles on either side of the canvas that are surrounded by the ‘U’ shapes represent the Indigenous and non-Indigenous people sitting in their camps discussing reconciliation, and sending three delegates from each side to sit in the middle and talk about reconciliation and how they can move forward together in harmony like the Emu and Kangaroo families that marry into one another. The red ‘U’ shapes represent the Indigenous people of Australia. The yellow ‘U’ shapes represent the nonIndigenous people of Australia. The large semi-circle shapes on either side of the canvas, one yellow, the other red, represent the people having empathy for the other side while discussing reconciliation and moving forward for a better future for all.”

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, homes and children’s facilities all over the country! First 5 Forever at the library The first few years of a baby’s life are a wonderful time for growth, development and learning. Our First 5 Forever program creates experiences and opportunities that build strong emergent literacy foundations and life-long learning capabilities in all young children.
