Division 5 - Weinam Creek master plan gets the green light

The Weinam Creek Priority Development Area (PDA) master plan has been given the green light by Economic Development Queensland.

The rejuvenation of Weinam Creek is set to create more than 699 jobs and generate almost $29 million for the local economy, with the project set to deliver much-needed transport upgrades, community services and local jobs.

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards said the master plan’s approval was an exciting milestone that brought the project another step closer.

He said a partnership between Council and Redland Investment Corporation was delivering the project that would transform Redland Bay (Talwalpin) into a vibrant waterfront precinct with restaurants, cafes, a supermarket,

more parking, new walkways and more open space.

“Thanks to a collaboration between Council and the State Government, a land swap agreement has been negotiated that will see land at the ferry terminal transferred to Council, which will form part of the Weinam Creek PDA upgrade,” Cr Edwards said.

“In exchange, Council land on Meissner Street was transferred to Queensland Health to use for a satellite hospital, to further support our ageing island and southern Redlands community.”

Cr Edwards said the land swap would bring important health services to the area while helping to progress Council’s vision for Weinam Creek.

“It’s good to see that collaboration across the different levels of government has

resulted in such a great outcome for the community,” he said.

“The redevelopment of this area is expected to create 102 direct and indirect construction jobs, 699 operational jobs, and inject more than $29 million into the local economy.

“Stage 1 delivered more than 500 new parking spaces at Moores Road, new pathways and a footbridge, with the next stages to include better transport connectivity to the marina, with the extension of Hamilton Street, as well as lighting and pedestrian upgrades along Banana and Meissner streets, and open space and park upgrades.”

Works to deliver the next stage of the development are set to start in April.

Ferry terminals progressing well

The construction phase for one of Redlands Coast’s largest marine infrastructure projects, the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) ferry terminals upgrade, is in full swing.

Local Councillor Mark Edwards said overall works on all four islands were scheduled for completion in mid-2023.

“The project has been clocking up important milestones with residents set to see a lot of activity on site,” Cr Edwards said.

“Fabrication of the Russell Island gangway and Lamb Island pontoon started early this year, with the Macleay Island pontoon transported to Thornlands where it is undergoing welding and testing works, to be followed by painting.

“Onsite works at Macleay Island started recently, with the Macleay Island floating walkway being installed.

“The Russell Island pontoon fabrication and fitout works may well have been completed by the time you read this or will be very close.

“As works progress, Council’s project team and I will continue to keep the community informed.”

Cr Edwards urged residents to use caution around construction sites.
