Oh my word!

There is a membership available to Redlanders that is totally free yet opens the doors to arguably the city’s most valuable resource - your local library.

The crews at Redlands Coast’s three mainland libraries – Cleveland, Capalaba and Victoria Point – along with the island and mobile services offer residents access to a world of knowledge and entertainment, as well as a great way to connect with your community.

It is easy to join for free either online at redland.qld.gov.au or by visiting a branch. There are no age limits and parents can join their children from the day they are born, with Redlands Coast’s libraries running an amazing program of engaging and fun children’s activities. There’s also a range of activities and programs for all ages, from story time for children to hearing your favourite authors talk about their latest works.

You can get more details of events at your local branch, along with a copy of the latest “hot read”, including fiction, non-fiction, reference, large-print, graphic novels, magazines and newspapers, DVDs, CDs and audio books. Your library can be a treasure trove for people interested in genealogy and local history. Redlands Coast libraries offer fast and easy checkouts and returns, with library crew members on hand to help. So even if you simply have a burning question, why not ask a librarian?

• You can borrow up to 20 items per card for four weeks.

• If your library doesn’t have the book you are after, you can ask for it to be bought or borrowed from another library.

• E-books, e-magazines and audio books are available to download for free around the clock, every day of the week.

• There are resources and support for languages other than English and for those learning a new language.

• There are multiple copies of books for book clubs.

• You can put items on hold and collect them from any branch or the mobile library.

• You can access computers, printing and photocopying services.

• Free Wi-Fi is available in airconditioned spaces.

• You can access spaces for coworking, study and family time.

BUSHFIRE AND STORM SEASON

Prepare your home

• Clean gutters and downpipes so stormwater can drain quickly

• Secure loose items around your property and garden

• Trim trees and overhanging branches around your property (check with Council first)

• Install metal screens or shutters to prepare your home against embers

• Ensure LPG cylinder relieve valves point away from the house to minimise fire risk

• Make sure pumps or generators are working and ready if needed

Make a household emergency plan

• Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as medications, legal papers, first aid, a battery operated radio, batteries, pet food, money and a torch

• Have a good supply of bottled water readily available

• Identify a safe place to shelter in a storm or to evacuate to in a bushfire and decide how you’d look after your pets

• Decide whether to go early or stay and defend in bushfire situations

• Make sure everyone in your household knows your emergency plan
