ost artists dream of a career that spans over a decade boasting international accolades, chart-topping hits, and underground classics, Barbadian-born/ Brooklyn-raised Rayvon has garnered this success and more while affectionately being dubbed the “ambassador of hip-hop reggae.” Having shared the stage with monolithic icons The Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson. Dubbed the reggae Usher by the late great James Brown., his pop-infused Caribbean flavour has paved the way for the next generation of Barbadian recording artists such as Rihanna, Shontelle, and Jaicko. Rayvon known for his work with multi-platinum selling vocalist Shaggy. The two began collaborating on a string of tunes in the 90’s which culminated in the Sting Int’l produced regional hit “Big Up.” Rayvon says, “We both got our break with that record. It put us in the reggae/dancehall spotlight. I had a smooth-edged style of singing and he had that rough DJ style. The chemistry was amazing.” Rayvon was also featured covering The Melodians’ classic “Rivers of Babylon” on the B-side of Shaggy’s 1993 hit “Oh Carolina” The following year Rayvon’s solo star began to brighten with the release of his hip-hop reggae classic “No Guns, No Murder” (produced by Funkmaster Flex) on the venerable VP Records. The track hit a trifecta on Billboard, ranking in simultaneously on the Hot 100, Rap Singles, and R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs charts. VP issued the follow up “Pretty (Before I go To Bed),” which quickly impacted the Billboard’s Rap Singles chart. Rayvon's career trajectory accelerated in 1995 when he recorded the island-tinged duet “In The Summertime” from Shaggy’s platinum, Grammy award-winning album Boombastic. The song was a cover of Mungo Jerry’s 1970 hit and following in its original success Shaggy’s version with the help of Rayvon reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and No. 5 in the UK while also featured in various major motion pictures and television series. Rayvon spent the next few years diligently releasing underground singles including “Bashment Party,” which positioned itself on Billboard’s Rap Singles chart. In 2001 he lent his vocals to yet another smash Shaggy duet, “Angel,” from the Diamond seller Hotshot. This time, the duo topped Billboard’s Hot 100 and took home an American Music Award for the wildly successful tune. Rayvon appeared with Shaggy in the national spotlight on shows like Live w/ Regis & Kelly, Saturday Night Live,

Jay Leno, David Letterman and All My Children. The song has since clocked in at 35 million views on YouTube and has been certified gold and platinum around the world. Rayvon says, “People have grown up with the classic songs I’ve done over the years. People want to hear Reggae because it’s feel good music. Feel good music will never die.” Rayvon previously released two solo albums including Hear My Cry (Virgin Records 1997) and My Bad (Big Yard Music/MCA Records 2002). The release of “2-Way” off the sophomore effort reached No. 10 on BET’s 106 & Park countdown and chimed in on Billboard’s R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs chart. The title track “My Bad” stands at over 100 thousand views on YouTube boasted No. 1 at Top 40 Radio for four weeks. Check out Rayvon on social media. SUGAR BEAR
R
eggae artist Sugar Bear has had a passion for music since he was a kid. Born Geoffery Scott to Joy and Jonathan Scott in Black River, St. Elizabeth, Sugar Bear's foundation years were rooted deep in the joy reggae music brought him. At a young age, he was always fascinated by the classic sounds of Sugar Cat deejaying on Kilimanjaro and Stereo Mars cassettes. The youngster would memorize every lyric of the legendary reggae entertainer and imitate his delivery so well to the point that his classmates would beat their desks and ask him to perform Super Cat tunes. Feeding off the energy entertaining brought him, Sugar Bear soon began to experiment writing his own lyrics for fun. However, it wasn't until he first heard the compelling influence of songs by Bounty Killer on the radio that he knew music was his calling in life. He began to craft his own style which not only saw a change in young Geoffery's lyrical delivery, but in location as his family immigrated to the United States in the Bronx, New York. As time went on Sugar Bear worked on advancing and elevating his artistry by voicing dubs for sound systems, performing periodically in various venues, promoting himself in clubs and recording and producing songs in his private studio, which he fittingly named "The Bear's Lair". Sugar Bear built on this growing involvement in the music industry and proudly established his own record label, Black River Records, on which he has released various singles such as "Throw Him Away", "Hot Girls Come Thru", "Roll It Up", "Jamaica Mi Born" and many other tunes of diverse styles. These prior singles are just the beginning in a future of recordings waiting to hit the music scene as Sugar Bear continues his pursuit of his passion for music. To date, SUGAR BEAR has recorded various songs such as, Tight, Di Likkle Youts, La Isla Bonita (Featuring Tony Cuirtis), Pum Pum Powers, This Is A Prayer, Cyah Stop We, Heaven Tonight, Pretty Pretty, Sugar Cane (With International Recording Artist, RAYVON), Red Bull and Now That We Found Love, also with RAYVON. SUGAR BEAR is currently performing shows, creating new music, and promoting Red Bull, a vibrant single produced by Tropical Blendz.u

THE WORLD ROBBED OF LAUGHTER AFTER THE S U D D E N PA S S I N G O F J O H N W I T H E R S P O O N . R . I . P S I R YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED. or decades John Witherspoon has made audiences laugh with his iconic movie roles and hilarious hijinks in his animated voiceover roles. Witherspoon is best known for his costarring role in the Friday film franchise, where he played Ice Cube’s, character’s father, and also for being the voice of ‘Gramps’ on the racially charged, and hilarious animated series The Boondocks. Unfortunately the comedy train rolled up to its last stop for John, when he passed suddenly at his home on Tuesday, October 29th. John is survived by his wife Angela, his sons JD and Alexander and a large extended family.
F
Born in Detroit in 1942, John started his comedy career as a stand-up comedian in 70’s. In the late 1970’s he started out acting with guest roles on TV shows, and in 1980 he landed his first feature role in The Jazz Singer. He continued to earn roles in blockbuster hits like The Ladies Man, Boomerang, and Vampire in Brooklyn; but didn’t have his true breakout until 1995 when he landed the role he is best known for on Friday and all of the “Friday” sequels. Throughout his career, John worked with, was respected by, and was even a mentor to, many of the great comedy actors of our time. He worked with the Wayan Brothers, Eddie Murphy, Tracy Morgan and many others. Tributes have been pouring out to his family and in his memory. Regina King, his co-star from The Boondocks wrote, ”My dad, my grandpa, my comedic inspiration! I love you Spoons! Rest In Paradise.” Marlan Wayans, star of The Wayans Bros. TV Show where John played his father, wrote, “I’m sad. Broken. Hurt.. yet extremely grateful to God that i got to spend 5 years of my life working with one of the funniest sweetest wisest humblest loving man @johnnywitherspoon. You were my tv dad and my mentor and my friend. I miss you already.” JD Witherspoon, John’s son wrote, “So...my Dad died today & honestly I’m not sure how to feel. I’m sad, but I’m also happy 4 all the great times we had together. We’d roast each other like homies more than Father & Son, and I really liked that. He was my best friend & my idol. Love U Dad...I’ll miss u.- J.D.” Roy Wood Jr. summed up John Witherspoon’s personality with his tweet sharing an anecdote of their first meeting. “After the last show of the weekend I dropped him off. He thanked me for the last time, then said, “You lil young nggas always want advice and shit but I ain’t got none for you. If you just love the job & do the work. It’ll keep getting better……………and don’t be a motherfcker.” “He then shook my hand & tipped me $100 for driving him 7 mins up the street. To this day, some of the best advice I ever received. You for sure loved the job. And for sure did the work & you 12
were never a motherfcker Rest well good sir. Condolences to entire #JohnWitherspoon fam” The world lost a comedy great and from Red Ink Magazine our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s Family. Just know that the beauty of comedy and of the silver screen is that the legacy will live on forever and he will never truly be gone. I will end this with Samuel L. Jackson’s tweet which was spot on. “The world is a little less funny today.” u

EEK-A-MOUSE IS MAKING RAINBOW WAVES IN THE REGGAE COMMUNITY
I
t is no secret that Anti-Gay rhetoric has been synonymous with dancehall and the Jamaican community. From the negative sentiment that can be heard across the Jamaican island, to the lyrics of the Buju Banton song, “Boom Bye Bye,” which condoned the murder of gay men, and on to more recent times, with the likes of Beenie Man, Ninja Man and others publicly speaking out against homosexuals. Some of these people have retracted their public statements made; after outcry, but the homophobic sentiment in Jamaica and throughout the Dancehall and Reggae community is as strong as ever. For the first time, one major player in the Reggae Community is taking a stand and trying to make a difference in the name of tolerance and equality. Eek-A-Mouse, who was born Ripton Joseph Hylton, is making waves across the Jamaican community, rainbow colored waves. In June of this year he made a spirited video on his v-blog and youtube channel in which he posed In a feather boa and lipstick, holding a rainbow flag. In this video, he sang an off the cuff song about him not being gay, and many of his friends being gay and for the world not to discriminate, because the word gay is in “Regay.” It was a clever tune in the spirit of tolerance, but was received with much backlash. Well, Eek-A-Mouse is known for not being timid, and instead of easing up after the backlash, he fired right back, releasing a song and video on Big Bout Ya Records. The song was titled, ”Controversial Song.” In the song he openly shares his support for the Gay and Lesbian community and welcomes them to his shows, and goes on to declare that controversy won’t hurt him. With a long history in Jamaica and the Reggae Community, Eek-A-Mouse and his message will be heard. He has been on the scene since the 70’s. He started out as a roots singer and traditional dancehall artist under his birth name. As his career grew he became one of the earliest artists to be called a “singjay” and in 1979 when his two singles “Once a Virgin” and “Wa-Do-Dem” took off is when he took on the name Eek-A-Mouse, as a tribute to his nickname on the street. A nickname that was not flattering as it was the name of his losing horse in racetrack betting that he always lost bets on, however it is a nickname that stuck and fueled a career, which has even included a sizable role in the movie New Jack City. 14
From cultural roots singing and dancehall, to becoming one of the first singjays, and even to acting on the big screen, Eek-A-Mouse has done it all; and now he is trying his hat at being a social activist and voice against discrimination. We at Red Ink do not endorse or reject any specific culture or social identification but we do strongly support a free and equal world. u

Get ready for three glorious days of Cayman Brac culture, fantasy and fun! The festivities move to Grand Cayman on 7 November for the most famous of events with five fun filled days of music, street dances, competitions, games, food festivals, a Pirate Pooch Parade, a children’s fun day, teen dances, two glittering parades, sporting events for all ages, treasure hunts, a pirate invasion and spectacular fireworks displays. It really is something not to miss! On Saturday November 9, the pirates will "invade" the islands attacking from the sea at Hog Sty Bay in the George Town harbour. Tradition has the Governor 'captured' and the pirates run amok for the week, before being banished again for another year. Thousands of people line the streets to watch the spectacle and its good-natured swashbuckling fun. It's the only event of its kind in the Caribbean and it caters to everyone in the family. But the fun doesn't end there, with lots of excitement also happening in Little Cayman (15-17 November). There you will find a pirate’s welcome party, the annual parade where on this smallest of the three islands, if 50 people turn out, the whole village is out! End the weekend with a firework display and farewell BBQ. This Pirates Week, there is something for everyone, don't miss it! u 21

Healthy Eating AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar
t’s November and we can already smell the turkey and pumpkin pie baking in the oven. When the holidays come around, it is such a wonderful time for families to get together and celebrate with each other. When there is celebration, a bountiful meal is always in the plans. Whether you are the party host or a guest, there are some tips to avoid those dreaded holiday pounds. No, it doesn’t mean that you have to skip out on all of the festivities. On the contrary, it is to get out there and celebrate everything the season has to offer. First, eat in season. For the fall and winter months, harder root vegetables are abundant. In particular, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, and parsnips are the root vegetables to look out for because they pack in great taste, fiber, and vitamins. Root vegetables stand up great to a variety of cooking preparations which include baking, stews, soups, and braising. When searching for side dishes, consider the root vegetables with the added value of fiber and vitamins. Instead of a traditional mashed potato, try a parsnip mash or sweet potato mash. Second, try and include healthier options as finger foods. For example, having a vegetable platter with low fat dip or hummus and pita are a tasty alternative that is filling and would make you less likely to over eat during the main meal. These small modifications can make a big difference in making it through the holiday season in the same pant size. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Young Designer - Lionel Nichols, Making Big Waves in the Fashion World - Get the scoop on fashion, see what’s in & what’s not. Are you in? On Saturday, October 5th Mario & Lee hosted their season debut fashion show presenting their F/W19’ collection titled “Flash Flood”. Being the first show of this magnitude for Mario & Lee, designer, Lionel Nichols proved that he was a force to be reckoned with as he unveiled to the world the collection he created just weeks prior. The show was hosted by comedian Wavey’s World (@wayeys_world) who wore a reflective tracksuit created by Mario & Lee while he grabbed the attention of guests with light-hearted jokes throughout the night. With a total of 18 looks spread over three scenes, the collection consisted of trousers, skirts, shirts, sweaters, and jackets which created an overall high-end streetwear vibe. The collection also featured 8 accessories which included face masks and chest pieces which were the perfect addition to spice up any ensemble. The color palette chosen by the designer was mixed with shades of navy blue, brown, and orange to welcome the fall season. Invitees also enjoyed performances by Staci B, Pookie, Frank Mc Fly, Sade Emoni, and G. Milano during brief intermissions. Inspired by two back to black floods that nearly destroyed his studio recently, “this collection represents keeping your head above water and is also a sign that no matter what life throws at you, you have the ability to swim.” –Lionel Nichols Makeup: Joycelyn Williams (@foolishlybeat) V.I.P Swag Bags: KLS Kloset, Lick Tha Spoon, Baddie Glow, Dolli’s Delectables, and Mario & Lee Models Tijashn Nichols, Katana Nichols, James Louis, Alexis Richardson, Cristian Gonzalez,Najee Hickling, Patricia Asencio, Tolulope Afolabi, Yuliffer Castellanos, Faythe Coston, Maurice Alpharicio, Leon Moise, Warren Knight, Adham Stewart, Quinn Shuler Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with
Lionel and this is what he had to say. Red Ink: When did you decide to pursue being a Fashion Designer? Lionel: I would have to say that once I started modeling at the age of 14 I realized how much I liked fashion. However it wasn’t until I turned about 17 that I decided that I wanted to do more than just make clothing for myself and my siblings. Red Ink: What are your inspirations? Lionel: I am inspired by everything. I am inspired by my family, adversities I face, culture, architecture, and travel Red Ink: Do you have anyone mentoring you? Lionel: No, I do not Red Ink: What has been some of the challenges? Lionel: Lack of resources has to be the biggest challenge followed by uncontrollable variables. I had two floods in my studio which caused an enormous loss in equipment fabric, supplies and time. Red Ink: What has been your most favorite Fashion Show or Photo Shoot? Lionel: My favorite fashion would have to be my latest show to date “FlashFlood” because I poured everything I had into it and to see the kind of support I received made it all worth while. Red Ink: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? Lionel: In the next 5 years I see myself running with the best of the best. I don’t know exactly what it would look like in terms of going brick and mortar vs staying E-commerce or opening up a studio/ show room but I see my clientele expanding to the stars. . u By Linda Cocochynna Ford 26
