Red Ink Magazine got the pleasure of asking Tonee Marino a few questions, and this is what he told us.

REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become an artist and at what age did it all began?

TM: I grew up loving music since I was younger. Listening to artists like Michael Jackson, 50 Cent, Drake, and more, I truly started to develop a passion for music. At the age of 12 I decided to get into my own creation of the art. I released my first song, and started slowly gaining traction on social media. For the first number of years I was releasing just 2-3 songs a year. After a few years I had myself a good size platform. I got deeper into my craft, producing all my own beats from 2020 on, co-engineering the tracks as well, dropping a song a month. The quality and the diversity continued to expand as time went on, leading to where I am today, dabbling with different sounds and different genres. That, I think is what sets me apart from other artists - I’ve done many genres and subgenres of music, releasing quality songs, as well as writing, producing, and mixing my own music.

REDINK: Tell us some of your struggles in the business, if any.

TM: I like to look at any struggles I’ve had as opportunities for growth - the main struggle being an independent artist, and managing every aspect of my career on my own. The marketing, content creation, songwriting, producing, social media management, and so on. I am thankful for all of this though, as it’s developed me into the person I am today.

REDINK:Do you have a favorite project that you worked on; that you’re most proud of?

TM: My latest release “Pendulum” is probably my most favorite track I’ve released as of now. It just screams summer. The whole vibe, the lyrics, vocals, and instrumental are so creative and catchy, and I’m proud of the work as a whole. I love seeing people sing along to the lyrics and express their connection to the song. I’m most proud of my #1 streamed song “Shake the Party”, for hitting over 1.2 million current streams on Spotify. It’s insane to me that I’ve accomplished this independently, with no help or industry connects.

REDINK: Tell us something about yourself, a quote perhaps.

TM: A motto I live by is “Pain is Motivation.” I believe there is no better motivator for positive change, than negative events or circumstances in life. It’s important to not be defeated and discouraged when bad things happen in life, but to keep pushing and use that pain to fuel your drive. Every loss is a lesson. No one would have desire to make a change if everything in life was great. Stay strong and keep working.

REDINK: What can we expect next from you?

TM: You can expect a lot of new music and content to come. I will be releasing my next single “Back In A Minute” on Friday, April 5th - written, produced, and co-engineered by me. I’m very excited for this to drop, it’s a House song that’s dropping right on time for summer. A great record for the clubs & parties. I also have my next live show at Chelsea Music Hall in Manhattan on Saturday, April 6th. Follow me on all socials to stay in tune for more updates!

This concludes our interview with Tonee Marino.

CARL WEATHERS

Rocky’s Apollo Creed, died at 76

Carl Weathers was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 14th, 1948. Most well-known for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, Carl had dozens of film and television credits to his name, as well as a short stint as a professional football player. After a very successful college football career at Sand Diego State University, where he followed his true passion of acting and earned a Master’s degree in Theatre Arts, he was signed to the Oakland Raiders in 1970 and was a Linebacker and Strong Safety playing for two years under the legendary leadership of John Madden. However, after leaving professional football behind he pursued his passion of acting.

Weathers acting career began in 1975, where he had roles in two Blaxploitation films Bucktown and Friday Foster. That same year he made an appear

ance on an episode of Good Times, Kung Fu, Cannon, Starsky and Hutch and Barnaby Jones. His next role would ignite his career. It was Apollo Creed in Rocky in 1976. He reprised this role throughout the franchise over the decades, in Rocky II, III, and IV and later in the story of his son in the spinoff movie Creed. Carl also had major roles in Predator, Action Jackson, Hurricane Smith and Happy Gilmore. And in the midst of these major films he also starred in a few syndicated series Street Justice and in the final two seasons of In the Heat of the Night, where he took over the sheriff role, replacing Sheriff Gillespie who was played by Carroll O’Connor. Most recently Carl Weathers had a recurring role for three seasons in the hit Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.

Carl Weathers was an amazing athlete and actor who treated every role as the role of his life, and it showed. He truly embodied the characters he represented and was never overshadowed by big industry names like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzeneggar. Carl was still doing amazing work and it is unfortunate that his health took a turn for the worse in the midst of an incredible career.

On February 1st, 2024, Carl Weathers died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, at the age of 76. Carl, you were an amazing actor and your legacy will live on with all of your films and television shows, and I am sure with the continuing Rocky and Creed franchises. You will always be remembered fondly and you will be missed by your countless fans and family. Rest in Peace Apollo.

BILL HAYES

Ballad of Davy Crockett crooner and Days of Our Lives star, died at 98

Bill Hayes was born, William Foster Hayes III on June 5th, 1925, in Harvey, Illinois. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps and trained to be a fighter pilot. However after 27 months of training, World War II had ended before he could actually fly and he chose to return to civilian life. He is best known for his role of Doug Williams on Days of Our Lives, which he portrayed for over 50 years, from 1970 until 2023. However, he was also accredited singer, with a Gold Record, that sold over 2 million copies. He was the first to record the song, “The Ballad of Davy Crockett.” A song that was originally made popular as the theme song on the Disney film Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. The film and show were so popular that they are credited with creating the first true American hero, which the youths of America looked up to and aspired to be, Davy Crockett. This craze continued from 1955 into the 1960’s and is why coonskin hats were so popular back then. The song originally written just to accompany the film was within weeks studio recorded by Cadence Records with Bill Hayes and quickly rose to the Number one spot on the Billboard top 100, where it stayed for two months. The song was later re-recorded by several other artists including Louis Armstrong, however, the Bill Hayes version was the only one to reach the #1 spot on the charts.

Hayes was an accomplished stage actor and singer. He had a few other minor hits including, The Berry Tree and covers of High Noon and Wringle, Wrangle. Wringle, Wrangle made it to the top 30 spot on the top 100 Charts. He was also the headlining music act on the Sid Casaer and Imogene Coca variety show Your Show of Shows. But in truth acting was always his passion. He starred and toured for a year with the

12 RED INK MAGAZINE

Broadway musical , "Me and Juliet." However in 1970 everything changed when he was cast as Doug Williams, in Days of Our Lives. In the show he was paired up with Susan Seaforth who played the role of Julie Olsen and they became the first true “power couple” on day time television. In fact they still hold the distinction as being the only soap opera stars to have their characters featured on the cover of Time magazine, which happened in 1976. The characters fell in love in real life and were married in 1974. And they remained married until his death.

Bill Hayes, at the age of 98, with a gold Record, multiple Emmy Nominations and a 53 yearlong stint on the most popular soap opera on television, I would say that you lived an incredibly successful and fulfilling life. You blessed your fans with countless memories on the stage and screen, and you helped inspire young Americans in the 1950s to aspire to be like their hero Davy Crockett. You sir were a hero in your own right. Rest in Peace.

ROMAIN VIRGO

Just Release “The Gentle Man” – Fourth Studio Album

Jamaican reggae star Romain Virgo is set to share his fourth studio album, The Gentle Man, on March 1. The twelve-track project will be out digitally and on CD via VP Records. The Gentle Man is Romain Virgo’s most candid body of work to date. The singerquestions, deconstructs, and affirms his beliefs, sharing clear-eyed perspectives across a dozen tracks. He challenges what it means to be a man in Caribbean culture, explores the highs and lows of ‘Afromantic’ relationships, and, in the process, blends classic, foundational sounds with modern sonics.

“I kept some important questions in mind while working on this album. Who am I to my fans? To those close to me? To myself? People saw me go from this inexperienced youth with a gentle way of doing things to a man with the same morals, but new understanding. With this project, I present my full, authentic self. This is who I am,” said Romain Virgo.

With production credits from Donovan ‘Don Corleon’ Bennett, Oliver ‘Cadenza’ Rodigan, Phillip ‘Winta’ James, Romeich Major, Maurice ‘Seani B’ Delauney, Nicholas ‘Niko’ Browne, among others, The Gentle Man builds on Romain’s soul-stirring reggae palette, closing the gaps between roots reggae, lover’s rock, Afrobeats, and more.

He’s joined by dancehall phenom Masicka on the album opener, “Been There Before”; delivers a heartfelt tribute to single mothers with Nigerian reggae-fusionist Patoranking (“I Believe”); and closes out the album with hard-hitting features from the multi-generational Jamaican talents Jesse Royal (“Bridges”) and Capleton (“You Must Pay”).

Romain Virgo has dropped four singles in the lead-up to the album: “Good Woman,” “Driver,” “Switch You On,” and, most recently, “Been There Before.” The latest track was released on January 26.

In support of his upcoming album, Romain Virgo will perform in Jamaica in February, throughout the North-East and South of the United States in March, at several festivals across the Caribbean in April, and in Europe from June to August, including at Summerjam in Germany in July.

The Gentle Man will be out on all streaming platforms and on CD on March 1, 2024.

Romain Virgo is one of the genre’s foremost crooner’s. Romain has released three albums to date; ‘Romain Virgo’ (2010), ‘The System’ (2012) and ‘Love Sick’ (2018) as well as several singles including his hits “Soul Provider,” “Stronger,” “Beautiful To Me” and “Star Across The Sky.” His music has been streamed more than 57.2 Million times on YouTube, 4.5 Million times on Spotify and 24.2 Million streams on Pandora. He is ranked in the top 100 most popular artists from Jamaica and receives radio play worldwide including key markets such as The United States, The UK, The Caribbean and Canada. Natalia Garcia is the mother of two girls and the designer of KK Swimwear, a Miami-based swimwear brand for young girls between the sizes of 2 and 16. Natalia’s inspiration for KK Swimwear came from her youngest daughter, Kassandra, who is now 13 years old. Natalia began creating KK Swimwear in 2012 by creating swimsuits for Kassandra, making all of the samples in her size, and selling swimsuits locally to family and friends. By 2013, Natalia expanded her market by selling her swimwear on Etsy and two boutiques in New York. She opened her first KK Swimwear boutique in Miami in the spring of 2014. Natalia has always loved fashion and chose to design swimwear because of her location in Miami, where people can enjoy the benefits of summer year-round. Continues....on page 20

She wanted to create swimwear that would be fashionable and unique, instead of dressing her daughter in the same swimwear that everybody else has. She also wanted to create entire sets, so young girls could have a swim coverup to match their swimsuit. Because of this, Natalia designs one pieces, bikinis, tankinis, boyshorts, and cover-ups to match the swimsuits. In her fashion shows, she goes above and beyond, creating high fashion designs and matching beach hats and other accessories with the fabric of her runway pieces to pull all the looks together. Although the swimwear she sells in her stores and online are more readyto-wear than runway, they are still far from basic. There are currently over 30 collections sold online.

In addition, Natalia also makes custom swimwear upon request. “When girls are wearing my swim suits they’re supposed to have fun in it and feel beautiful. I choose all types of models because little girls are little girls, all of them are beautiful.” Natalia got acquainted with Fashion Entertainment when she went to a fashion show for Tina Marie Models, a modeling school in Orlando. She has showcased during Orlando International Fashion Week’s Youth Fashion Show the past three years and in New York Fashion Week 10 seasons so far! Natalia has loved her experience, among all of her other fashion shows nationwide. Natalia is currently looking at a busy year upcoming fashion shows on her calendar this 2024. Aside from the shows KK Swimwear has been featured in many magazines as well as sponsoring national pageant companies. Natalia travels throughout the United State doing destinations photo shoots, she is happy to say that all of the goals she had just last year she has already accomplished. Natalia would love to venture into other areas in fashion in her career in the future. However, she intends to stick to designing in the kids department, helping young girls to always feel beautiful and confident. Continues....on page 22
