SUZANNE SOMERS

Three’s Company Star, Thighmaster Spokesmodel and Playboy Playmate, died at 76

S

uzanne Somers, born Suzanne Marie

Mahoney on October 16, 1946, died on October 15th, 2023, one day shy of her 77th birthday after battling breast cancer that had relapsed earlier in the year. She was most well known for her role on Three’s Company, where she co-starred with John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt as “Chrissy” the typical ditsy blonde sitcom character. She was also pretty well known for her two appearances in Playboy Magazine and also for her role as the spokesmodel for the Thighmaster exercise device. The festival started at 11 am and opened with 2 local acts. Bounce Cruz, a talented Guam transplant, did an acoustic set, and the upcoming Reggae band Driftone, who describe their sound as “spicy Reggae”, successfully hyped up the crowd for the next performance by Bonafide, a Jamaican band comprised of four brothers who are now based in Las Vegas. Suzanne Somers had the image of a perfect doll in the spotlight, but her life was far from that. Early in life throughout her teenage years, she suffered from severe “alcoholic rage induced” abuse from her father and had trouble in school as a result. She got pregnant early in life and had her son Bruce at the age of 19 and suffered from financial and emotional distress early in her life. In 1971 at the age of 6 her son was hit by a car driven by an uninsured motorist and her son had no medical insurance so to pay those bills she posed for a playboy photoshoot at the suggestion of a modelling photographer. However, those photos were not published until 1980 and at that time they were published without her consent, and she had a very public legal battle with Playboy.

4

RED INK MAGAZINE

Her early career was filled with bit parts in various shows and films like The Rockford Files, American Graffiti and a topless scene in Magnum Force. And then soon after had short single episode co-starring roles in The Love Boat, The Six Million Dollar Man and The soap opera One Day at a Time. But her first solid role was on Three’s Company, where she co-starred until being fired after the 5th season over a salary dispute. She had requested a huge salary increase of $120,000 more than the $30,000 that she was paid per episode in order to match John Ritter’s $150,000 per episode salary, however the network executives only granted her a $5,000 raise and then she started missing shoots and being defiant, so they eventually wrote her out of the show and fired her. Back in the 70’s female actresses made significantly less than male counterparts and she can be credited for publicly and at great personal cost, for bringing this into the spotlight at the cost of her career. After her time on Three’s Company Suzanne had her two appearances in Playboy magazine in 1980

and 1984, with the first being published without her consent, in 1994 she got a starring role in a shortlived sitcom She’s The Sheriff and throughout the 90’s she did various roles in made for TV movies. However her saving grace in the 1990’s had to be her role as the spokesmodel of the Thighmaster, which led to her being inducted into the Infomercial Hall of Fame and also gave her the popularity needed for her long standing tenure appearing on the Home Shopping Network to sell her own branded housewares, jewelry and clothing. Somers was also a very accomplished author who wrote more than 25 books, including two autobiographies, four diet books, and a book of poetry. Fourteen of her books became bestsellers however some of her books on obscure and unproven medical practices did garner some negative attention. Suzanne Somers, you will be missed dearly however your memory and beauty will live on forever on the pages and films of all that you created. You were an icon for never ending beauty. Rest in Peace Ms. Somers. By Michael Devine 5

Continued...from page 8 Red Ink Magazine had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Lucky Harmon, this is what this amazing, incredibly talented Singer/Songwriter, and Actor had to tell us. REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become a “Singer” and an “Actor” and at what age? LH: There’s so many influences that made me want to be a singer such as Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Aaron Carter, Usher Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and Eminem 2Pac, Biggie smalls, Calvin Harris , Pitbull etc. 8 years old is when I decided I wanted to be in the music industry. As far as being an actor, I was inspired by Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, the rock, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Phillipe, John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone, Bradley Cooper, Adam Sandler, Al Pachino, Robert De Niro, etc. I didn’t start acting until age 20. REDINK: How do you balance singing and acting, and which do you enjoy more? LH: Well, my music, it is my passion first and foremost and it is my first love. Acting is fun but it’s not my first love. And to balance both, I’ve basically focus when the acting is slow I’m doing more of my music and when the music is slow I’m doing the acting. I make it work for me. REDINK: Tell us some of you struggles in the music / acting business, if any LH: I’m dealing with a major struggle right now with the Actors union strike, loss of income etc. but having my love for music made me focus more creatively and appreciate having something else too fall back on.The music business is tough, but I’m blessed to still be in the industry doing what I love and using the talent I have. And it does take a proper team too push your brand and move you forward, as well as hard work and dedication. REDINK: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? LH: Booking shows nationally and also opening on tour with other major artist and major arenas festivals casinos. More artist feats with songs. Movies, Tv shows, cameos, awards show’s performances, special guest appearances, as well as Celebrity Charity shows and events. REDINK: Do you have a favorite project that you worked on, that you’re most proud of? LH: My favorite projects that I have worked on is Furious7 Fast8 and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. My

music video shoot for WILDCARD can’t wait till it is finished and released. REDINK: Well they will see me on my very first game show Appearance “WHO THE BLEEP IS THAT” LH: I’m working on getting my music video done. WILDCARD” because it’s all fun, with good energy, and I’m inspired by the record having the casino vibe. Giving it the Las Vegas appeal totally fit me and the song specifically having “LIL WAYNE “as a feature has really hyped me up and the girls and models it was just a whole vibe and a lot of fun. Also this song “WILDCARD” is being nominated for a possible Grammy. REDINK: Tell us what you are working on now. LH: WILDCARD” music video coming out. Bookings shows appearances and starting tours. MATHEW PERRY ‘Friends’ star died at 54, gone too soon

M

atthew Langford Perry was born

August 19, 1969, and died unexpectedly on Saturday October 28, 2023. Perry was most well known for the iconic role of Chandler Bing whom he portrayed in the hit show Friends which ran for ten seasons. I don’t think there is a person alive today ion any developed country in the world that could say they have never seen an episode of Friends; it is quite possibly the most successful and highly syndicated sitcom ever made, second only to maybe Seinfeld. At the peak of his career Perry was making $1 million per episode. Early on in life Matthew was actually not involved in acting and as a child he was a top ranked Tennis player in Canada. However, his life was not all success and good times. At age 10, he began having

12

trouble in school, he began stealing money, smoking and had failing grades, and he even famously had a fight and beat up his classmate, who grew up to be none other than Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Early in life Perry developed a drinking problem, beginning at age 14 and by age 16 he was drinking every single day. He moved away from Canada to live with his father in LA at the age of 15. It was then that he began auditioning for acting roles. Prior to this he had only had one small role as a child actor. In 1994 at the age of 24 his life changed forever with the role of a lifetime starring in Friends. There was a flipside to this coin of success. The sudden increase in wealth made drugs and alcohol much more attainable and his addiction won over all else. Continues..on page 14

RED INK MAGAZINE

13

RED INK MAGAZINE

Continued...from page 12

He has been quoted as stating that more than half his life has been spent in rehab facilities. The truth is addiction is a demon, and he recognized it as such and tried desperately to kick his bad habits, however, they took their toll on him. In 1997 he suffered a serious injury while on a jet ski and added pain killers to his addiction regimen. At one point alongside the full day of drinking he was popping over 55 opioid pills a day. The toll on his body came fast; at one point his body weight dropped down to only 128 pounds and he suffered catastrophic health consequences including an exploded colon, a short time on life support, two weeks in a coma, nine months with a colostomy bag and more than a dozen stomach surgeries. The Demon was winning. However, he did finally claim to be sober in 2021, during the Friends Reunion show. After Friends ended in 2004, Matt starred in a few other TV shows including Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip from 2006-2007 and The Odd Couple from 2015 to 2017. And throughout the late 90’s and 2000’s he co-starred in several movies, including “Almost Heroes” with Chris Farley, “Three to Tango,” and “The Whole Nine Yards” starring alongside Bruce Willis. Though his career can be considered a success, especially reaching the ever so daunting Million dollar per episode level in a syndicated show, his personal life was rife with challenges, a result of his drug and alcohol addictions, he also suffered from relationship struggles and never married nor had any children. Matthew Perry was an incredible comedic actor, whose iconic way of speaking made him one of the most prominent character actors on Friends. His success was only overshadowed by his demons. However, no one that ever saw him on an episode of Friends could ever say that he did not make them laugh. Mr. Perry was

14

found dead in his hot tub at his home in Los Angeles and there is currently no definitive cause of death publicly available. Matthew Perry was taken at the young age of 54, far too soon for this promising actor to be taken from the world. He had so much more to offer. Matthew Perry, you will be missed but never forgotten, as your legacy is etched in the silver screen forever and your iconic role of Chandler Bing will most likely continue in the syndication of Friends for decades to come, you will be remembered fondly by your family and fans alike. Rest in Peace good sir. By Michael Devine
