Continued...from page 4 a rash decision to knock on the door of the world renowned artist Salvador Dali, while travelling through his hometown of Portlligat, Catalonia. It was this chance meeting, where this amazing and eccentric artist invited Duaiv and Magella into his home for conversation, and after that Duaiv ultimately decided to make a change to his life and make art his true focus and career. It was here that Duaiv was truly reborn as the artist Duaiv. A fun tidbit is that the name Duaiv is actually his family surname, Viaud, reversed. It was a way to maintain a unique identity and also a way to give a small dig to his father for snubbing his pursuit of art as a career early on in life.
His wood working father, opera performing mother, his lovely wife and soulmate Magella, his chance meeting with Dali are all counted as some of Duaiv’s greatest inspirations to pursue his artistic passion. Other inspirations that lead to his magnificent style were the vistas that he enjoyed watching from the yard of his family’s beach house on the coast of France, the views he took in while backpacking across Europe with Magella and the childhood boat rides that he took with his brother every summer, were clearly inspirations to the landscape and nautical themed paintings that he is so well known for. The impressionist artistic style in which Duaiv paints is something that can be compared to the greatness of Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas. However, there is something very extraordinary that sets Duiav apart and makes his artistic style exceptionally unique, and that is the fact that most of his painting is done directly with his palette knife and not with brushstrokes. There were other painters in history that painted with palette knife like Pissarro, Matisse and Chagall, however, none of them, in my opinion, created works with such beauty and depth as those that Duaiv has created. One of the most amazing things about palette knife painting is the literal and actual depth of the paint applied to the canvas which creates a three-dimensional effect, and shows the true color of the paints.
Red Ink Magazine had the absolute pleasure this past month to travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fl to view in person the studio in Duaiv’s home where the magic truly happens. Magella and Duaiv invited us into their home for a very candid interview and we were able to enjoy the visual spectacle that is Duaiv’s art studio. From the Formula One race car and Racing Motorcycle encased in Acrylic to the models of all the exotic sports cars that Duaiv has custom painted over the years, to the works of art spanning every inch of the studio, including his vast collection of painted instruments; cellos, violins, guitars, and so much more. We were truly in awe. A video that shows the entrance of Red Ink Owner and Publisher Naz Khan entering the studio can be viewed alongside this article, as can a video of Duiav applying paint to canvas on a private commissioned art work that has never been seen before, a true Red Ink Exclusive.
The visit was an honor indeed and we got to see that Duaiv and Magella are as beautiful and warm inside as his artwork is outside to our eyes. The meeting truly warmed our souls and we hope to have many more such meetings with Duaiv in the future. This man is truly an artistic talent with many recognitions through rewards, honors and gallery appearances around the world . In my opinion, this artist deserves to be featured in the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art; among others.
Here is just some of the grand recognition that Duaiv has received over the years:
-At the 50th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, Duaiv designed and painted the façade of two buses, using the landscape of Cannes and popular film stars as inspiration. These paintings were later exhibited at a museum in Mougins, France.
-In 1998, Duaiv received the Lys D’Or from the Cannes International Carlton in recognition of the artist’s international acclaim.
-In 1998, Duaiv was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Star of Europe, European Foundation Prize by Prince Henrik of Denmark, acknowledging his willingness to mentor young contemporary artists in his home country of France.
-In 2006, Duaiv became a part of the Benezit Directory of top-rated painters. Created in 1911, the directory has become the art collector’s gold standard for information on some of the world’s greatest artists.
-In 2014, he transformed a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster and two Ferraris (a 458 Spider and an FF) into mobile canvases, using the exteriors to exhibit his signature, abstract designs
-The 2015 Coconut Grove Arts Festival in Florida commissioned Duaiv to create the official artwork for the festival.

REDINK: You have been featured in many art galleries around the world and you have even had several of your own art galleries around the world, that your daughters managed. Are you currently in any museums of note?

D: Some museums In Europe yes, but not in America yet.
REDINK: So you are not currently in any museums in the United States? Do you have any aspirations to be in like MoMa or The Met or the Guggenheim?
D:MoMa is more modern so you have to be one of the high priced selling artists currently to be there, but of course I want to be introduced to the museums here but I don’t have those contacts yet, hopefully sometime soon.
REDINK: So after reading through some of your Biographies and other interviews that you have done, I know that a lot of your inspiration comes from your childhood and one of the things mentioned several times and a photo was even in your biography of your Teddy Bear “Nounours” What was the name of that bear?

D: It was “Noo Noos” Which is French for “small bear”
REDINK: Does Nounours still exist, do you still have him? My daughter would be very interested to know this, because she has a doll “friend” that she says she will keep forever and I believe her so it would be inspiration for her to know someone famous has kept theirs through adulthood.
D: Yes, He is right here, hold on. {Duaiv proceeds to go into the other room and then returns with Nounours and shows him to us}
REDINK: Boat trips that you took with your brother Francois were a big inspiration to the boat paintings that you paint today?
D: Yes when we were children we built two boats together.
REDINK: Have you ever done a self portrait?
D: I did once, but I did not like how it turned out and For me I really prefer to paint for other people, and myself and my family are not things that other people would want to have, they want paintings of their family and things important to them. https://www.duaiv.net by Michael Devine u
REDINK: Paintings of yourself and your family, wouldn’t that be a nice legacy to leave for your family?
D: I do not like legacy, I believe in now and do not want to think about when I am a legacy.
REDINK: Do you maintain many of your galleries around the world still?
D: No, I only keep open the galleries in the place that I live and then I close them when I move, because I make all paintings real and they are all originals and I do not like to have paintings made for mass, I do not have enough artwork to furnish many galleries. I do a lot of paintings as commissions and I really like to make things that are requested specific from people, because I know that original work will be what someone really wants to enjoy.
REDINK: What are your interests outside of art and business?
D: I like to travel and see shows, but I love big cities the most, like Monaco and I love to visit places in Italy. I love the hustle and bustle of a city.
REDINK: You have met some of the greatest artists and musicians of our time. You met Salvador Dali and Pablo Casals the cellist… Are there any other contemporary masters that you would like to meet?
D: I already met the best of our time, I met Marcel Mouly as well as Dali, so no at this time there is no one that I would want to meet.
