BARBARA WALTERS
The legendary female TV journalists, died at 93
Barbara Jill Walters died on December 30th, 2022. She was the legendary female news anchor whom shattered the glass ceiling for women in the industry and became, for a time, the biggest name in the entertainment news industry with her long time run as co-host of 20/20 and her creation of The View.
She was born in Boston on September 25th, 1929. Her father Lou, was the co-owner of the world famous Nightclub, The Latin Quarter which has locations in Boston, New York City and Miami. This nightclub was the hot spot of the era and often played host to celebrities and world leaders, so from an early age Barbara had been exposed to that world and it is one of the reasons she became such a mega powerhouse when it came time to interview the biggest names in the world. She was never star struck or in awe of anyone because they had always been a part of her life.
She began her career as a writer for some shows on NBC, WPIX and CBS. Ultimately her career began to take off when she started writing for The Morning Show on CBS in 1955. From here she went on to become a writer and publicist for the huge magazine Redbook and later in 1961 she began writing for The Today Show on NBC. At the time women were often seen in the news industry as eye candy and supplements to the male news casters to be used for fluff pieces and side banter only. It was Ms. Walters who broke through and shattered both the glass ceiling and the stereotype by aggressively pursuing real interviews with powerful people and became the first true female Co-anchor of The Today Show, in 1974. But it was not an easy road. As stated, in the past women on news shows were usually models and actresses that served as little more than a pretty smile on screen. Barbara began doing real interviews and became an active on screen member of The Today Show team in 1964, and until 1971 she was steadily growing in popularity, however in 1971 when Frank McGee took over as Host of the show, he had it in his contract that he would only do on screen interviews with Ms. Walters if he was able to ask the first three Big Questions so as not to be overshadowed by a woman. In 1974, after his death, Barbara was officially named Co-host of The Today Show which opened the door for the likes of Katie Couric and others in the following decades. However in 1976 after proving her mettle in the industry she was mad an offer she could not refuse by ABC to Co-Anchor the evening news. She was called the “million dollar baby” because she was signed to the news net
work with a $5 Million Five year deal which at the time, at a million dollars a year, made her the highest paid of any News anchor of the era. To put into perspective, that same contract today would have been equivalent to $5 million per year. Talk about shattering the “glass ceiling.” However, the co-anchor role only lasted 2 years as there was no chemistry between her and her partner Harry Reasoner. So in 1979 she moved on to contribute to the news magazine show 20/20 and in 1984 was named official co-host.
From 20/20 she spun off into her own ”Barbara Walter Specials” which in were her own special interviews with the biggest celebrities and most powerful World Leaders, some of whom, only did interviews with her and no one else. And this was where her true celebrity status was born. She interviewed every President and First Lady from Richard and Pat Nixon all the way up to Donald and Melania Trump. Continues...on page 20
Continued...from page 18
She was known to ask the hard and pressing questions of people often times drawing real emotional responses from the most powerful people on Earth, she even made Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander of allied forces in the Persian Gulf War, and one of the toughest men alive since John Wayne, cry when she asked about his father in a 1991 interview. She also did the Special interview with Monica Lewinsky where she famously asked, live on camera, why she kept the blue dress stained with semen after her rendezvous with Then President Bill Clinton.
Throughout her career Barbara Walters was known as the best of the best in securing hard to get interviews with the most influential and controversial people, she did an exposé on Fidel Castro and was filmed interviewing him on his boat while crossing the Bay of Pigs. She also brokered a deal to be the first televised interview of Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1977 during the world changing peace talks. She beat out Walter Cronkite for the first right to the interview and he wound up doing a secondary follow-up interview with the world leaders.
But more than getting the scoop on her peers and being granted access to the world’s most powerful people, she also forged relationships with those people, as was in her nature since childhood, because to her all of these incredible talents and world influencers were just “people.” She counted the Shah of Iran as a personal friend as were President Nixon
and Moshe Dayan. When Nixon made the historic Presidential trip to China in 1972, she was the only female television reporter granted access. When Israeli foreign minister Moshe Dayan died in 1981, Barbara lent his wife, Raquel, a black dress to wear for the funeral. And when Michael Jackson died in 2009, while Barbara was on vacation in Vietnam, she made an impromptu trip back to the states to immediately be by the side of her close friends the Jacksons during the funeral and immediately do a special 20/20 tribute to the pop star legend.
Her creation of The View, the world famous, all female, news discussion and gossip show, became the groundbreaking success that led to future syndicated news shows like The Chew and The Talk. The View became an instant success with housewives around the world with its’ female focused spin on world views and has been running for 26 years. Over Barbara Walters career she was nominated for 18 Daytime Emmy Awards and won 3. She won for Best Talk Show Host in 1975 and 2009 for The Today Show and The View respectively and she won the Best Talk Show award in 2003 for her role producing and creating The View. Barbara Walters truly changed the game and the landscape for women in the world of news reporting and talk show hosting. Her legacy will live on forever in her fans and in the future hosts and newscasters who can attribute their opportunity and inspiration to this great woman. Barbara you will be missed, but you have truly left your mark on this world. Rest in Peace.u
GUADALUPE
Meet Guadalupe Valazquez. She’s been a jewelrey designer for over 28 years. One of her oldest memories creating jewelry was being back home in Mexico City, with not much materials to experiment with. Her imagination roaming wild, the feeling of synergy while putting pieces together and joy on her sisters faces receiving their first GV design. Coming to the United Sates and having to start a new life for herself was very difficult but her drive and determination has been there guiding her through the rollercoaster of her life. Arriving to the land of opportunity from a 3rd world country was challenging but those experiences and memories help her create authentic, handmade pieces. One of her first employers in New York was a woman named Evelyn Brown. One day Evelyn was at her house creating custom belts using semi-precious stones and pearls and she asked Guadalupe if she would like to learn how to make some, she was looking for an assistant to co-produce her collection and so Guadalupe agreed. she was connected with a jewelry instructor, full paid classes to learn and be her apprentice. Mrs. Brown was not only a mentor / designer /boss, but a great friend that believed in Guadalupe and helped her excel and originate her own brand GV DESIGNS.

The amount of respect that she give to the elders is reciprocated and remembered through great pictures and videos that they share back with her with excitement on their faces once they have completed a design piece.

REDINK: Who or what influenced you to become a jewelry designer?
GV: Evelyn Brown has influenced me and she is someone who has trusted my work. I thank god and life for knowing her and for being my mentor. REDINK: Tell us some pros and cons you have encountered in the industry.
GV: The pros that I found in the industry is that I got to meet a lot of wonderful people from different parts of the world. See many other vendors present there work and always see something new that I can get inspired of and corporate it in my jewelry collection. The cons would be, having to know what your customer wants and always having to try and see what trends are being used, in every aspects of the industry either clothing or accessories in order to combine with my jewelry pieces.
REDINK: If you could design a collection for a celebrity, who would it be and why?
GV: Jennifer Lopez would be a celebrity I have in mind. I love her as an artist and it would give me the opportunity to meet more celebrities and expand my horizons with my business.
REDINK: Do you have a favorite collection you’re most proud of?
GV: One of my new collections is a combination of stones and semi- precious multicolors.
