hen the weather gets warmer, our thoughts turn to love and, more specifically, to weddings. This month's magazine is all about the preparation for that joyous union. We've scoured hundreds of pictures from designers and high street to bring you the pick of the crop of this season's gorgoues wedding gowns plus of a few of those that will be featured in next season's collections too. Once you've said yes to the dress, you'll want to think about flowers - and what to do if you're allergic to them! Then there are the issues of hair, beauty and make-up. Our big wedding feature covers these all-important considerations as well as highlighting some of the island's premier wedding venues. And, after months of planning, there's no doubt about it, every bride-to-be deserves to let her hair down on her hen night or bridal shower, so we've got some off-the-wall suggestions for those too. In the travel section, we look at three amazing wedding destinations and give some invaluable tips on what to do while you're there. And even the kids get in on the act with outfits to suit mini-guests. Sticking with the theme, our interviewees this month include a wedding planner and a bridal etiquette expert as well as artist Aliya Ahmad who was recognised at the 43rd Annual Bahrain Fine Arts Exhibition and is keen to pass on her knowledge. Elsewhere in this month's mag, Behnaz Sanjana addresses the issue of mental health. Problems are all too common amongst women of all ages so we've highlighted the telltale signs of some of the most common conditions to look out for and there's expert advice on treatment which shows there really is light at the end of the tunnel. The spring season is the time when many major brands launch their new fragrances. For its latest offering, French brand L’Occitane went back to the very source of the beauty of Provence. It wanted to find the force that breathes life into plants – the very plants that become its precious ingredients. Every trail it followed led to the light. It seemed to shift, its colours pulsing and rippling. Three perfumers worked on the creation of Terre de Lumière: Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu and Nadège Le Garlantezec. “It really was a journey for us. Each one brought her own world, her own emotions. This fragrance brings together, in perfect harmony, so many sensations that come from our experiences. That’s what gives it so many facets,” they say. The fragrance truly is akin to a breath of Provencal air in a bottle. A visit to the marshals’ briefing on the morning of last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix provided the perfect insight into exactly why the event is justifiably proud of its marshalling team and their dedication. On arrival there was a live band playing music in one corner, slices of birthday cake being generously handed out in another, and so much enthusiasm amongst the 650 marshals present that the atmosphere seemed part briefing, part pre-race carnival. Most of these marshals had reported for duty at 5am, and many would work late into the evening - a clear illustration of the passion, pride and commitment they share. Reassuringly, when the marshals were called to order for the briefing, respectful silence quickly descended on the room as the business of the day got underway. Formula1.com

Celebrate el Cinco
May 5 is the day Mexicans, and their friends across the world, remember the historic Battle of Puebla. Various venues across the island will be putting on special events to celebrate. Casa Mexicana presents an evening with DJ Dos Mares and authentic eats from Mexican chef Romaldo Martinez and at Le Meridien, Bahrain City Centre, there’s a Mexican-themed brunch – get together a party of 10 and you’ll get a 20 per cent discount. There are likely to be plenty of other Cinco de Mayo celebrations, so keep your eye on our social media for details.
Bag a Bargain
You know how much we at Woman This Month love a bargain and we’re also pretty fond of our four-legged friends, so we’ll be making a beeline for the Boutique Sale, the twice-yearly offering of pre-loved designer and high-end high street goodies which raises money for the Dogfather’s Animal Rescue Centre. The event takes place at The Dilmun Club, from 11am-2pm on May 20 and entry is 500fils. Making Music There’s more festival fun as the Novotel Bahrain Al Dana Resort recreates the spirit of the well-known French Fête de la Musique. Make Music Bahrain is a one-day music festival, open to professional and amateur musicians, both local and expat, with all artists performing free simply with the aim of sharing their skills in a festive atmosphere. The party scene returns to Al Dar on May 5 with the Melodika festival celebrating a new age of music and art. Special guests, and headliners for the night, will be Matt Sassari and Jewel Kid, two fresh acts that have made a name for themselves in the techno scene with worldwide releases and gigs across the globe. All Change at Vogue British Vogue broke all the ‘rules’ with the appointment of Edward Enninful to the editor’s chair. The title’s first black editor and also the first male, Enninful, who takes over from 25-year veteran Alexandra Shulman, has a background in styling rather than journalism. But his fashion credentials are impeccable, having served as contributing fashion editor for both the US and Italian editions of Vogue. Meanwhile, after just two editions, Vogue Arabia parted company with launch editor Saudi Princess Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz. Confirming that she had been fired, she issued a statement saying: “I refused to compromise when I felt the publisher’s approach conflicted with the values which underpin our readers and the role of the editor-in-chief in meeting those values in a truly authentic way.” Her replacement is Manuel Arnaut, who is currently editor in chief of Architectural Digest Middle East.

Eman Al Sarraf, of Leenaz, told reporters: “It’s a milestone for us. We always wanted to be in London, it’s a great market to be in. This is the first fashion week we are attending in Europe. It will help familiarise people with the abayas.”

Perfectly Poised Bridal planner Daisy Maalouf was recently in Bahrain for a high-profile wedding. She shared her vision for women worldwide with Behnaz Sanjana.
A
model at 14 and a practising ballet dancer at 56, Daisy Maalouf is the epitome of grace and elegance. For the last 12 years, she has been training brides to bring out the best in themselves on their big day. Having learned under one of the best names in the modelling industry of the day, Daisy has worked in England and runs Daisy’s Modelling Group in Lebanon. She was also the youngest jurist on a television show – Best Tonight. Talking about her penchant for being ‘proper’ since she was a little girl, she says: “It was something I was born with. I always liked things being done correctly. I loved fashion and enjoyed being on a stage; so modelling came naturally to me.” For Daisy, becoming a bridal planner happened by chance. “I was helping a friend plan an Al Saud wedding, which was obviously taking place on a large scale. The bride’s mother requested me to give her daughter some additional pointers on how to carry and conduct herself, and my work was much appreciated. Thereafter I was called for her other daughter’s wedding and I gained recognition through word of mouth,” she says. Besides designing silverware for her own venture – Taramand – Daisy is a familiar name in the royal wedding circles of the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and now, Bahrain. She has formally studied the art of etiquette and has poured over numerous books on the subject. “Etiquette is all about knowing the right way of doing things, while adapting it to your own country and culture,” she says. carry her shoulders correctly for good posture; then I teach her how to walk in her heels, manage her flowing dress and how to sit correctly. My brides are selfconfident, can walk beautifully, yet naturally, and are encouraged to be themselves,” she says. She also choreographs the weddings – training brides to walk on the catwalk, which is the culture in top-bracket Middle
Eastern nuptials. Her three-day group classes in etiquette and posture are not limited to brides-to-be. “I teach ladies how to stand, sit, walk, shake hands correctly, introduce themselves, enter a room and carry themselves elegantly in casual and formal settings. They also learn how to host parties, how to talk and, more importantly, how to listen.”
Daisy’s efforts to groom women have a higher intent than would first appear. “If I teach ladies who hold prominent positions in the community well, others will emulate them, and this will result in a better society – which is my aim, especially in the Arab world. Our women need to realise that they are not only about looks. The Middle Eastern woman is intellectual, well-mannered and able to hold her own, no matter where she is. Charisma comes with brains, not beauty alone.” Daisy also tackles a relevant social evil today – the smart phone. “Constantly looking into your phone takes away from your character. Look people in the eye and be present! I remind ladies to use their mobile only when needed,” she says. While Daisy is all for making a great first impression, she doesn’t endorse jumping on to the cosmetic bandwagon. She says: “Age with grace and dress accordingly. Why should I hide the lines on my face? They show my experiences, wisdom and achievements; this is who I am. Sadly, these days, most young girls are dolls, with blonde hair, big lips and no character. It is not going to make you any more appealing. Instead, focus on gaining knowledge in whatever interests you, no matter what your age. That is true beauty.” Daisy’s parting shot to any bride is: “Always choose to be yourself. Marriage is already a major life transition, so when you are stepping onto a new path, you should be able to recognise yourself in the mirror. Enhance your looks, but don’t lose your identity. Your dress and makeup should reflect you, and fit with your lifestyle. Fine-tune and improve, but stay true to yourself.” g May 2017

The inclusion of non-Bahrainis this year was another step in that direction.” She holds pottery workshops in art galleries to familiarise people with the basic technique of working with clay, enabling them to leave with a few pieces of fired and glazed artwork. She also collaborates with interior design companies to create artworks for corporates and individuals. In addition she creates custom commissioned pieces. “People explain to me what they are looking for and I give them several options. We then discuss and finalise what makes them happy and I work on it. Each piece is individual, personal and hand-crafted by me. One of a kind,” she says. Aliya is currently busy building a body of work for her upcoming solo exhibition at one of the well-known art galleries on the island. Commenting on the guiding factor for each exhibit, she says: “I am working with several pieces at the same time. alking in to Aliya Ahmad’s home is like stepping into Bohemia; her living room is enhanced with many of her own quirky, yet poignant pieces. Aliya’s medium of expressing her creativity is through clay – firing it into forms and figures that she then paints with visions of the sights and scenes that inspire her. Originally from Lahore, this is Aliya’s second stint in Bahrain, after having lived in Dubai and Canada with her banker husband and their four children. Pottery became a creative outlet a long time ago, when she was a handson mum to small kids. A recent high point in her artistic journey was receiving the third prize at the 43rd Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, which celebrates local artists. She says: “This year, expatriates were welcomed to participate, and the jury hailed from France and the UK. I wasn’t expecting to win, so it was an incredible surprise to have stood third from among so many seasoned artists.” Aliya heard about the competition just five days before the submission deadline. With no time to create something new, she turned in three existing artworks. Collectively, they took third place. Her piece ‘Tolerance’ was inspired by her last visit to Lahore with painted, turbaned male faces alongside a singular veiled female visage. Aliya fashioned it from a redundant piece of rolled-out clay, as a second thought to recycling it. A visit to the vivid bluewhite islands of Greece served as fodder for ‘Behind the Scenes’, another one of her winning creations; and the third, called ‘Nature and Nurture’, denotes flora, fauna and femininity. “My work is inspired by my surrounding and what it makes me feel. I love Picasso’s work, so you’ll see a lot of his influence in my paintings and figures. Earlier I would make threedimensional glazed objects with a definite structure, but now I have started painting on clay. The form of the piece doesn’t matter to me so

Making Dreams Come True Organising a wedding is a daunting task, but Sameera Al Balooshi makes it sound like a walk in the park. She gives WTM the nitty-gritty of being a wedding planner. Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background and how long have you been a wedding planner at Crowne Plaza Bahrain? I was working as a reception supervisor at the hotel before I became a wedding coordinator. I’ve been doing it for two years now and I truly enjoy it. What inspired you to become a wedding planner? I enjoy working at Crowne Plaza as this is where I have broadened my experience, learnt new things and faced new challenges every day. I love the excitement that comes with planning a wedding and meeting the lovely couple full of hope, ready to start their new life together. Also, it’s a joy working with a highly knowledgeable team, providing our clients with the best possible service and advice. How long does it take to plan a wedding and what does it entail? It takes a year, sometimes six months, before the wedding date for the preparation. First, setting the budget is very important. Once that’s agreed upon, the next step is to find the right venue. When the venue and date are selected and confirmed, it’s time to begin selecting vendors, considering the whole wedding décor with full stage set-up, fresh flowers, chairs, beautiful cake and more. After the venue and vendors are booked and secured, we help our clients with everything else to make sure that their wedding will be as magical a day as they always envisioned. What's the biggest wedding you have organised so far? So far, the biggest wedding I’ve organised was with 500 guests, which was a successful and unforgettable one. Everything was done perfectly. What is the most challenging part of your job and the most rewarding? Proper budgeting for a wedding is a difficult task, particularly when weighing everyone’s expectations. I’ve made, and do everything I can to get a discount – that’s part of my job, after all. The couples have to make some difficult choices and remember weddings are emotional. My job is to figure out the best possible options that work within their budget. The most rewarding part is making our clients’ events a success – seeing them satisfied and pleased with the end result. Making them happy makes me happy. What is the one thing that most people spend their maximum wedding budget on? The wedding stage, as this is where the bride spends most of her time. Name three things that can make or break a great wedding party. If things have not been done at the right time – if the kosha [stage] wasn’t ready on time; the food is delayed; the DJ is having a problem with the music or any problem with the sound system; the bride is not ready on time – these are the things that can break a great wedding party. On the other hand, a nice venue, good food, great music, lovely wedding décor, fresh flowers, proper lighting, beautiful stage set-up
and a happy couple can make the wedding amazingly perfect. You must have come across a few demanding clients. What has been the most outrageous request from a bride or groom? There have been times when the bride and the family have requested additional seats for extra guests during the wedding. This is a common thing that happens a lot but we always make it possible and sort out these kinds of issues so the wedding goes smoothly. What are your top tips for a good wedding? The best thing is to hire a wedding coordinator. If you have a wedding planner, you can save a great deal of money and time – they’re well organised and will eliminate your stress. A coordinator takes the problems away, and makes wedding planning a fun and enjoyable experience. Are you married? If yes, did you plan your own wedding or hire a wedding coordinator? Yes. My husband was the one who arranged everything for my wedding, which I find very sweet and loving. g May 2017

First things first: What is a Lingerie Shower? It’s a party, much like a bridal shower, where friends of the bride get together and give her gifts of racy lingerie. The idea is to stock up her lingerie drawer for the honeymoon and sexy nights forever after! Planning for the party • Hold the party well in advance, because as it gets closer to the wedding, the bride will have other things to focus on. • Send out cheeky invites. oes Your Husband Complete You? If your answer was yes, please think again! Relax… I am not calling for a disobedience movement against husbands here, I’m simply stating facts. A husband should complement you, but should never complete you. It's pretty amazing that two people choose just one person to spend all of their life with. I mean it's not crazy to me on my own personal level, but the whole broader concept is slightly mad. Right? If you Google the word ‘Marriage’ this is what you’ll get: “The legal or formally recognised union of two people as partners in a personal relationship”. Yes, it clearly states: TWO people, and those two people can never be one, simply because it is impossible. They are two different beings, with different understandings and different opinions, yet they each are WHOLE, they aren’t missing some invisible parts that only the other person in the relationship can complete. People are changing and evolving around the clock, yet, at any given time, each one of us is a perfection and a work of art. No matter how self-loathing we get at each phase of our life, and no matter how insecure life can make us, each one of us is WHOLE, each one is the product of years and years of experiences, of failures and success, of thoughts and insights. Each of us is so rich in some way or another. Aren’t we all designed differently? Yet these differences are what make us stand out in the crowd. In no way or form are we incomplete, living this life waiting for ONE person to give us those missing parts that we have been craving all our lives. Marriage is not a set of rules that works the same for everyone. Our needs are ever changing to keep up with the person we are in the moment. Yes, in each marriage, we do www.womanthismonth.com
In a marriage, it is vital for each person to keep their own identity, not try to mold and reshape themselves in a way that fits better with ‘The Other Half'. become so in tune with one another that we just know what the other person needs. We try to give it to them and maybe, in a way, we don’t even know we are doing it. However, we can only give the other person the extra features, the supplementary, the extra accessories. We add things that will improve or emphasise their qualities, to enhance their existing selves. We add things to allow the both of us to be in harmony. Yet, we will add no real value to their core or base. In a marriage, it is vital for each person to keep their own identity, not try to mold and reshape themselves in a way that fits better with ‘The Other Half’. As much as it is
important to do things together and for each other, in every marriage, it is also important to do things separately and in ways that only define you and who you are. It is essential to know that the union you both make, is made out of two very complete human beings, who have decided to do this hand in hand, and for each one of you to bring their own essence to this relationship, without overshadowing the other. I blame fairytales and romantic movies for making us believe we should wait for the ONE person, who will complete us, who will finally put our lives back in order. Yet surprisingly enough, we never see life after the famous line "They lived happily ever after", in those fairytales. We never check back on these people 10 or 20 years later to see how the submersion has worked out for them. If you think about it, what can you ever add to a relationship if you yourself are insufficient and deficient? How can you be a good wife and mother if you need another human being to make you whole? Matters of the Mind It turns out that males and females commonly suffer mental health problems distinct to their genders. Behnaz Sanjana looks at the three most common among women.
T
he cells in the brain – the body’s central processing unit – fire commands every second of the day to other cells all over the body, enabling us to carry out our daily functions. But sometimes, the giant walnut in our heads falls short in effectively coordinating these billions of cells across the body, which can affect daily life. A mental health condition hinders our thinking and everyday activities. It also helps determine how we handle stress, interact with others and make choices. Dr Gardenia Al Saffar, consultant in psychiatry at Royal Bahrain Hospital, says: “The cause of mental illnesses is multifactorial. The most important biological factor is possibly heredity or genetics. If an individual has a relative who has been diagnosed with a mental illness, they are more likely to develop one themselves. This does not mean every individual with a family history of mental illness will be affected. Biological factors involved in the development of mental illnesses are infections, substance
abuse, brain injury or abnormalities, poisoning and poor nutrition. Psychological factors that can trigger mental illness are childhood trauma, neglect and poor coping skills. The environmental factors that can
contribute to mental illnesses are what we commonly call stressors, which include loss of loved ones, financial hardship, social and cultural expectations and role transitions.”

They complain of changes in their cognitive functioning as they notice their concentration and memory deteriorating. In severe cases or when patients remain untreated, they find themselves feeling hopeless about the future and wishing to die or becoming suicidal. DEPRESSION Dr Gardenia explains that depression is a serious mood disorder, and that the term is being widely and incorrectly used these days, thereby belittling the suffering of genuine patients. This also contributes to the stigma arising from the mistaken perception that mental illnesses are a result of weakness and something that people should just "get over it". She says: “While sadness is one of the criteria required for diagnosing depression, it is not necessary to make the diagnosis as some patients simply feel irritable while others may show loss of

Fortunately, depression is treatable. “The treatment depends on the cause and severity of symptoms. It usually includes medication such as antidepressants as well as psychological therapy.” The doctor notes that the possible side-effects of medication are a small challenge to deal with compared to the severe effects of depression on one’s ability to function on social and occupational levels. Lifestyle changes such as exercise, improving sleep, good nutrition and stress reduction are also powerful tools that can help speed up recovery and prevent a relapse. www.womanthismonth.com

but such feelings can become out of hand. If constant feelings of dread interfere with regular life, a mental health specialist should be consulted. The term ‘anxiety disorder’ encompasses generalised anxiety disorder (excessive worrying about everything for a period of more than six months), panic disorder and panic attacks, agoraphobia (fear of closed spaces), social phobia and others.
Anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental illnesses worldwide, with women twice as likely to be diagnosed as men.
ANXIETY DISORDERS We’ve all been through it – a pounding heart, rapid breathing, and the anticipation of doom. Some degree of anxiety is normal,
The condition is characterised by feelings of fear, panic and uneasiness, as well as a sense of apprehension and irritability. “These are associated with physical signs and symptoms including muscle aches, fatigue, palpitations or a sensation of a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath and a dry mouth,” says Dr Gardenia. “The physical symptoms of anxiety often make patients believe they have a physical condition, making them less likely to seek psychiatric help and delay treatment.” Severe anxiety issues, which can be accompanied by depression and substance abuse, should be addressed with medication and/or psychotherapy. If ignored, the problem usually worsens, leading to other anxiety disorders.
EATING DISORDERS Bulimia, anorexia and binge eating are mental illnesses stemming from eating too much or too little, causing grave mental and physical problems.
Middle-aged women can fall prey to eating disorders, too, and often suffer without help. Victims of anorexia nervosa suffer from a distorted body image and an obsessive fear of being overweight, when in reality they are grossly underweight. Complications brought on by extreme dieting and the resulting malnutrition include physical and psychological malfunctions. In bulimia, patients resort to binge eating and then purge the food out through vomiting or overdoing laxatives and enemas or fasting. Frequent cycles of binge eating and purging stresses the body, which results in serious repercussions, including death. Binge eating is compulsive eating without the purging that is typical of bulimia. Consuming thousands of calories in one sitting makes the sufferer feel pangs of deep guilt, low self-esteem and disgust, which leads to the vicious cycle www.womanthismonth.com
of more binges and unhealthy emotions. “Eating disorders are treatable conditions that most often start during adolescence. The sooner an eating disorder is diagnosed and treated, the greater the chances of recovery. It is important to bear in mind that eating disorders very often change over time so a patient who primarily presented with anorexia and restricted their food intake can transition to become a binge eater,” notes our expert. Eating disorders, if left untreated, can be deadly. Dr Gardenia says: “It is
important to prevent these disorders by spreading awareness. Society needs to reduce pressures, especially on women, to be thin. Young girls must be taught to accept different body sizes and place more emphasis on personality than on appearance.” There is no single cause of eating disorders. They could be due to intense stress, grieving, childhood experiences, genetics and self-esteem issues. The road to recovery starts by recognising the problem and choosing to seek help to overcome it. The weather has suddenly turned and I am finding it very difficult to sleep. I am 47 and think I may be menopausal as I keep getting heavy sweats. How do I find out? And how do I control these symptoms? I'm not keen on taking HRT as I have heard the production method is very cruel to animals?

Anecdotally, women often say they experience menopause around the same age as their mothers did, so that can be a benchmark for predicting your likely menopause age. The earliest sign of menopause will usually be a change in the pattern of your menstrual cycle. You may experience lighter or heavier periods and their frequency may also be affected. You may have your period every fortnight or you may not have one for months at a time. Hot flushes come on suddenly and feel like a rush of intense heat radiating through your body from an internal source. You may find yourself flushed and sweating afterward. Night sweats, on the other hand, usually occur while you are sleeping. It's only when you wake up drenched in sweat that you recognise what has happened. You need to have your thyroid examined and it’s function checked with a simple blood test, because it may be the reason behind the heavy sweats. Alter your environment – to relieve hot flashes and night sweats, create a cooler environment using fans or air conditioning, dress in layers so you can remove them as needed and drink plenty of cool water. Try omega-3 fatty acids. Taking 2g per day halves the severity of hot flashes, and had a positive effect in 70 per cent of women taking these supplements. Vitamin E can also reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes, as can acupuncture, which achieved a marked clinical improvement with 12 sessions compared with the customary care. The herbal supplement Fernal was twice as effectual as a placebo in www.womanthismonth.com
reducing flushes in one trial of 54 menopausal women. Also, the herb black cohosh has a long tradition of use, and can help with flushes and mood swings. It’s so effective that Germany’s health regulator has approved its use at 40mg per day. There have been concerns, though, that it might worsen the spread of breast cancer, so women with a family history of the disease should perhaps think twice The first brand of HRT was Premarin, made up of conjugated equine estrogens. In fact, it’s name is derived from PREgnant MARes' urine. It was approved in 1942. HRT Indications: • relief of menopausal symptoms (short-term) • prevention/treatment of osteoporosis (long-term) • premature ovarian failure Other possible benefits include the reduction in risk of colonic cancer, macular degeneration and cataract formation, with improved dentition and skin healing – these are still controversial and not seen as indications HRT Contraindications: • pregnancy • undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding • active thromboembolic disorder or acute-phase myocardial infarction • suspected or active breast or endometrial cancer

Your blood pressure is the force exerted by your heart, against the resistance created by the arteries, to keep blood flowing through your body. Your blood pressure is high (hypertension) when the force is excessive. If significantly elevated, it increases the risk for heart disease, stroke or kidney damage. A healthy lifestyle is fundamental to prevent hypertension and to manage it when it develops: • (DASH) diet high in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, potassium and calcium; low in cholesterol and saturated fat. It reduces the pressure generated by each heartbeat. • Keep your dietary sodium below 2.4g daily. • Following the DASH diet and reducing sodium to 1.6g daily can lower blood pressure as much as monotherapy with an antihypertensive. • If you consume alcohol, keep the daily alcohol intake below 30mL – two drinks – in men or 15mL in women. • Aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes daily on most days. • Achieve and maintain normal body weight. • For overall cardiovascular risk reduction, if you smoke you need to quit. The long-lasting chemical changes in the brain due to nicotine are similar to heroin or cocaine – and can prevent you from thinking straight. So, you won’t smoke while pregnant as it can cause asthma in babies. But simply smoking around children causes ear infections, colds, bronchitis and other breathing problems,

Smoking is linked to certain colon and breast cancers, lupus, increased risk of depression in young people, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, gastric reflux disease and snoring problems. The latest menu at this fashion-forward venue takes its lead from the island's annual cultural extravaganza, with a little sweet charity to assuage the guilt.
T
he latest menu at this fashion-forward venue takes its lead from the island’s annual cultural extravaganza, with a little sweet charity to assuage the guilt. The Spring of Culture menu is Cavalli Caffè’s seasonal offering and is very much an homage to regional flavours, fused with the venue’s Italian heritage and put together with skill and love in the kitchen. I went along to try out the dishes on a balmy evening and sat outside to enjoy the ambiance of a greenery-shrouded terrace and gentle musical sounds emitting from within. To start with I chose the Caprese Melt, an interesting take on the standard layered mozzarella, tomato and basil salad. Served on a bun with the salad to the side, the cheese was, as the name suggests, gently melted to exaggerate the already super-creamy texture. In my view, mozzarella is often overrated and a bit tasteless, but this treatment actually brings out the subtle flavour and the melted gooeyness adds a fresh and exciting textural element to the equation. The cheese sat atop a base of basil pesto which was both sweet and

piquant enough to have me raiding the garden herb beds on my arrival back home. Standard basil pesto usually includes garlic – which is one of my favourite things in the whole world but perhaps not the best accompaniment to mozzarella’s subtle charms – for this version, the knowledgeable chef having either left it out or toned it down sufficiently not to overshadow the cheese. For main, I went for the house recommendation of prawns and fresh spinach risotto. A good risotto is a thing of great beauty; the process of slowly adding broth to the Arborio rice being a labour of love and patience almost as much as skill. This certainly didn’t disappoint. Creamy and smooth, the spinach obviously fresh enough to impart a good hit of flavour and the seasoned prawns retaining a certain tang of chariness from the grill, I could have eaten only this and gone home happy. But, fortunately, that was not to be. Since, for dessert, it was almost obligatory to try the café’s new socially responsible endeavour, Mela Kunafa, from which all profits will be
donated to the Royal Charity Organisation. Once again a fusion of Italian and Middle Eastern, the baked apple bore the unmistakable hallmark of European comfort food with the mhayara pastry – a mixture of semolina dough and vermicelli – invoking souq breakfasts. A sweeter pastry would have made this dish overpowering but, once again, restraint, in not soaking it in the customary sugar syrup, allowed the rough and smooth texture to shine along with the flavour of the apples. The kunafa is served with home-made ice cream and, for me, it’s a tragedy that this sublime creation does not have its own place on the menu. Chunky and rich, it’s a small burst of happiness on the tongue which put a huge smile on my face. I’d worried about saving enough space for dessert but restaurant supervisor Miloš told me: “Don’t worry, this doesn’t go to your stomach, it goes straight to your heart.” He was not wrong. VERA’S CARROT CAKE Ingredients • 4 eggs • 2 cups sugar • 1 1/3 cup oil • 2 cups all purpose flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp salt • 2 tsp cinnamon powder • 4 cups grated carrots • 1 cup chopped walnuts Cream Cheese Icing • 600g cream cheese at room temperature • 400g unsalted butter at room temperature • 3 cups icing sugar • 1 tsp vanilla Method • Preheat oven to 180°C. • Combine eggs, sugar and oil. • Sift the flour with the rest of the dry ingredients and add it to the egg mixture. Gradually add the

carrots and walnuts. Bake in a preheated oven for about 50 minutes or until a toothpick or a knife inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool to room temperature before frosting. For the cream cheese icing • Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, cream the cheese until smooth, add the butter, then gradually add the sugar and vanilla.
Vera Deeb, came to Bahrain 19 years ago, fell in love, got married and the island has been home ever since.
