EDITOR’S NOTE The Holy Month is always a busy time for us with Iftars and Ghabgas across the island at which we have the opportunity to meet lots of our readers and test the waters about what you think of the magazine. One of my favourite gatherings this month was the Indian Ladies Association (ILA) Iftar at which I received a certificate of recognition for Women in Media. The ILA is a great organisation which does some really good work, so it’s one we’re always happy to support. That they decided to recognise that support was a lovely gesture. It was also great to see so many of you at our first Mums' MeetUp, we're busy working on the next one. As well as gallivanting across the island, this month we’ve turned our attention to women in technology. I chatted to Bindu Titus, one of the driving forces behind tech company DreamMakers, to learn what makes her tick. We also share inspirations from other leading ladies in the industry and round-up the latest ‘must-have’ gadgets. With summer holidays upon us, we’ve expanded our travel section. I share my bucket list, Puja Tiwari takes us on a pictorial journey across the region and there’s a whole raft of useful travel tips to make your voyage or vacation better, safer and easier. The travel theme continues on our fashion and beauty pages with great looks, packing tips and products to beat the elements. Our Parenting section has been expanded to include information on summer camps, seasonal movies and more and we have a new column from new mum Fernanda Langhammer. Best known to readers as our fashion and beauty editor, she shares the trials and triumphs of parenthood second time around. As we go to press, the Holy Month of Ramadan with its abstinence and reflection is drawing to a close and we are looking forward to the celebration of Eid, so I’ll take this opportunity to wish each and every reader Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak.

The Green Citizen I enjoyed reading about Rasha Al Najjar, a young teacher who is tackling environmental issues. I agree with her that educating young people is the best way to make a difference and it’s great to see that she and others like her are getting the recognition they deserve. I always get my own kids to celebrate Earth Day but I’m glad to know there is stuff happening throughout the year too and I plan on getting more involved. Marwa

Letter New Look I’m loving the redesigned fashion pages, the content has always been good but now they look really up-to-date too. I particularly liked last month’s Get The Look section as I’m a big fan of this summer’s off-the-shoulder trend and there were some good ideas on how to wear it. Keep up the good work. Teresa

Women on Wheels Love, love, love the Women on Wheels feature in the June magazine. I had no idea that Bahrain International Circuit was so female friendly, I’ll be taking more trips out there in the future. And Anne Al Zayani makes motorcycle riding sound awesome though, like her, I am a bit fearful at the prospect. I love to see items like this featuring real people. After all, fashion and beauty are important but they’re really not everything and I like showing your magazine to my young daughters to illustrate that point. Thank you. Manal Happy Homes I really like the redesign of WTM’s homes section. It’s great to have inspiration and an idea of where to find products to create the look. In fact, I’d love to see more of these product pages in the future. Simone Ed: Thanks for all your comments on our redesigned pages. We want your magazine to look bright and appealing and we’re constantly looking for new ideas, so if there’s anything you’d like to see included, please email editor@redhousemarketing.com.

The original crew, including Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield, return for a Bolly-fuelled romp through the South of France with cameos from the likes of Dame Edna Everage, Anya Hindmarsh, Judith Chalmers and Jeremy Paxman. We really can’t wait, see you at the cinema.

Shakespearean Tale Here at WTM we’re big fans of Anne Tyler, she of The Accidental Tourist and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, so we’re very excited at the news that she’s the latest literary luminary to tackle Shakespeare for the Hogarth series. The Vinegar Girl, her modern reimagining of The Taming of The Shrew, tells the story of Kate, a university drop-out whose father is pushing her to marry his lab assistant so he can stay in the country. Definitely one for our holiday packing. A few brands invest in resort or cruise collections and even fewer throw breath-taking shows, Gucci is one of them. The Italian house chose the historical Westminster Abbey in London to show off its Cruise 2017 collection inspired by English gardens and the British punk scene. The collection has creative designer Alessandro Michele’s signature all over the pieces, bringing a clash of prints, textures, colours and embellishments. All the elements put together can result in catastrophic looks, but in his hands they create a harmonious symphony that’s a hit with celebrities across the globe. We just love it!

WTM sales manager Farheen Ahmed has recently become a published author with her book Beyond The Ordinary released to acclaim. She tells us about her inspiration.

From Bookings to Books

T

he book is the story of and a tribute to Bhanumathi Narasimhan, who Farheen first met when she visited the ashram of Art of Living (AoL) in Bangalore. She says: “People were telling me ‘it’s a strange place’ but I wanted to see for myself. I went and there was an international women’s conference, which takes place in Bangalore every two years and that’s where I met Bhanu Didi. “I was doing some meditation but I hadn’t done any courses at that stage. The day I reached there, they were teaching sudarshan kriya [a breathing technique]. I was in the plush, green surroundings and I was sitting with Bhanu Didi. I found her to be very simple and down to earth. “She asked me if I had been to the schools which Art of Living runs, that are free for poor children. I made a trip to a school and when I came back to my room I thought to myself ‘everyone is writing about His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar [the official founder and spiritual leader of AoL] but no one has written about her and she’s the director of children’s and women’s welfare’.” Two months later Bhanu Didi was visiting Bahrain and Farheen met her and told her she wanted to write about her. I said: “I want to write about your achievements. I’ve been inspired by you and

28

July 2016

Farheen Ahmed I want other women to be inspired.” After taking permission for the book from HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Farheen became a regular visitor at the ashram. She says: “In the innumerable times that I’ve met her, there’s something about her values, what she shows about how you go about your life and your challenges. “If you look at books from the likes of Robin Sharma or Brian Weiss, there is always a life lesson. I wanted my book to have life lessons from Bhanu Didi. “She took me through her life journey, going to see people and telling them that girl-child education is important. One of her important messages is that empowerment doesn’t just mean educating those from the lower economic end of society – a person can be one of the most educated but not be enlightened. There are plenty of educated women facing emotional challenges which can even lead to suicide. Thus, it is important to nourish your soul. Meditation can help you to align that. This life we have been given, we have to use it.” She is keen to point out that Art of Living,

contrary to popular belief outside India, is not just about yoga. It has schools and also runs programmes for women, particularly widows, in village areas offering training and helping them set up small businesses in things such as cooking, basket weaving and making school uniforms, thus enabling them to support themselves and their families. The organisation has also been involved in humanitarian relief in areas such as Syria, where it works, in particular, with female victims of abuse. The book was officially launched at the annual AoL celebration for Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s birthday, an event attended by around 20,000 people and seen online by more than two million. Farheen says: “My concept, as an author, is that whatever I write should have a moral for others, it should wake people up. My grandmother told me as a child that we’re all born with a lot of wisdom; as you get older it gets dusty with all the things we go through. But some people will return to the light, get beyond the rainbow. My mission is to spread this. Go beyond the ordinary. Go for the road not taken. Be the best version of yourself. “And I’m not done yet ‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep and I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep’.” www.womanthismonth.com

hese days it’s not unusual for aesthetic specialists to also have a collection of lotions and potions named after them. But for Dr Yannis, this was never his intention. In fact the 111Skin range was never intended for public use. He explains: “I was actually more interested in finding a product to help patients recover after facelift surgery. I had been looking for a long time in the US but was never happy with what I found. Then I met two scientists [who are now part of his team], they knew about ingredients and together we developed what we called The Healing Serum. “I was giving it to my patients as part of their recovery package, not charging and not selling it. But after six weeks they kept coming back for more, they said it made their skin feel really good. “I decided to create a range of products and started selling them at the clinic. One of my patients tried them and cancelled her regular skin care order at Harrods [the world-famous London department store]. The next thing I knew, I got a call from Harrods’ buyer saying they wanted to launch the range! “That’s when I got a little nervous. My patients loved them, but was that because they were already getting good results with their surgery? I decided to commission independent clinical studies [the products are not animal tested] and, once I saw

I decided to commission independent clinical studies [the products are not animal tested] and, once I saw the results, then I was happy to launch in Harrods the results, then I was happy to launch in Harrods.” Four years later 111Skin, named after Dr Yannis’ practice, 111 Harley Street, in London’s highend medical enclave, is stocked at other big-name outlets such as Harvey Nichols in the UK and Barneys in the US. And now it’s available exclusively in the GCC at Dessange Bahrain. But despite a hugely successful practice and a slew of celebrity clients, no names of course, for Dr Yannis, the world of plastic surgery is not all, well, plastic. Born and brought up in Greece, he says: “I come from a medical family, both my parents are doctors, and it was always in my mind. I found surgery most inviting because of the ability to make visible and long-lasting

changes. But my interest in plastics was something that came later. One of my friends had a terrible accident, he was on a motorbike when he was hit by a barrier and badly injured. He had to travel abroad for reconstructive surgery to allow him to live a normal life. Now he is fine, but that showed me there was a gap in the profession in Greece and that plastic surgery is not just about aesthetics.” Following training at Albert Einstein Medical Centre, in the US, the young surgeon became a resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital (the second largest hospital in the US and a non-profit institution) and gained experience in craniofacial reconstructive surgery performing complicated

operations on patients suffering severe injuries from car crashes and gunshots as well as those with congenital abnormalities. And these days, although he is widely known for his aesthetic results – he says: “London is full of celebrities, a lot of them come to me because they know I’m not going to talk and I think there are some that would surprise you; the people that haven’t had anything done don’t exist anymore and younger people are very open to things like Botox and other procedures” – there is much more to Dr Yannis than the, some would say, superficial world of beauty. He also participates in international surgery missions abroad and helps underprivileged people correct cosmetic abnormalities explaining: “This is a tremendous opportunity for me to use my surgical skills to help people who do not have the financial means or access to qualified doctors. I feel honoured and humbled to be able to utilise my surgical skills to help those affected by cleft lip and cleft palate problems, and those who are underprivileged.” g www.womanthismonth.com

TALKING TECH D

WTM chats to Bindu Titus, co-founder of DreamMakers, one of the island’s premier technology businesses, about her role and what comes next.

reamMakers specialises in website and app development but Bindu wasn’t always the techy expert she is today. In fact she was initially much more drawn to science. She explains: “I graduated from Christ University, Bangalore, in 2002 with an MBA in marketing and human resources (HR). But it wasn’t my first choice. I had already done a degree in biology but everyone was talking about business and admin and that was the field my father was pushing me towards. I went and took the entrance exam for the MBA because my friend was going. I didn’t expect to get in, I didn’t even want to do it, I wanted to stay in sciences but my father pushed me because he felt I would do well. I got the highest score on the exam!” For a year, she fought with her dad and confesses: “I didn’t really study.” But a marketing project in the second year proved to be a turning point. She says: “I did an internship with Gulf Air which involved behaviour analysis of travellers looking at why they choose particular airlines. That made me more interested in pursuing marketing and HR. “In the third year my lecturer was Professor Dixit who taught us in entrepreneurship, he gave me a project on the impact of technology in communications. I had to set up a small company, do a business study and present a financial analysis. It was a hypothetical situation but from that company DreamMakers was eventually formed.” After completing her studies she married husband Titus. He has an IT background and very solid experience in the latest developments and together they founded DreamMakers with operations in Dubai, Bangalore, USA and Hong Kong.

Bindu is a modern day marketer, brand strategist, data scientist, social maven and a storyteller. A deep thinker but also a roll-up-her-sleeves doer.

But how does a marketing and biology grad fit into a tech company? She explains: “I enjoy the marketing side, anything that lets you give life to a company. Everybody comes up with desires and dreams of how they want to see themselves in five years. I transfer that into reality by using

the knowledge that I have in marketing and branding. “I still find it challenging because now the area has shifted to online, it’s not so much about print. A lot depends on the skills you put into the website.” As well as large-scale clients such as Bahrain Airport Services,

Bahrain Pharma, Alroaya Group in Saudi Arabia and many government organisations, the company, and in particular Bindu as a business coach, is also currently working with around 15 young Bahraini entrepreneurs who have come up with ideas and these will all be launched the next year or so. “We teach them how to promote their business online and what to sell or not,” says Bindu. “For example, someone who has a boutique online has a lot of things to sell – we would put them into specific collections bringing items from different brands together. It’s about developing a unique selling point and identity.” And the business is continually evolving and developing. She continues: “We have new projects coming up all the time in both apps and websites. Nowadays it’s not enough to just have a website, you need a website that’s responsive with social media and apps running alongside it. “Some of our meetings will start at 7.30am and go through to 9.30pm in the initial phases when we are discovering exactly what the client wants. We bring the concept together and take it live.” She also uses her marketing skills in other ways to help clients who may be struggling. She explains: “For example a business which is at a stagnant stage or has suffered a setback. We would look at their existing technology and possibly redesign the whole concept to breathe life into the system by social media marketing, SEO (search engine optimization) and blogging. “If the client is a doctor, then I do a lot of reading about the latest happenings in the industry and research on the technology that’s available and combine it www.womanthismonth.com

She is a strong believer that it’s possible to create a highly profitable business while staying true to your ethics and goals. She points out that most entrepreneurs have many passions and numerous ideas but they may need someone to offer guidance to bring those ideas to fruition. That is the expertise of DreamMakers and Bindu herself who, in her role as a business coach, can help would-be entrepreneurs find and focus their strengths turning immediate goals into long-term success with actionable business strategies. As Chanel’s cosmetics spokesperson, you will always find the actress setting trends wearing edgy-chic make-up.

Be inspired! Dark Star The best match to a daring eye-shadow is without a doubt dark eye-liner and loads of black mascara. If your lashes are sparse or short, don’t be afraid to use fakes. The new generation of fake lashes look natural (when you don’t pick extra-long ones) and are easier to apply. Heavy Metal Metallic is a versatile eyeshadow option and easy to pair with most styles. However, if you want to make a statement, take your lead from Kristen’s futuristic look to grab attention. The secret here is the application, instead of following the eye shape, the make-up artist opted for an unusual geometric format. Maybe not your first choice for everyday wear but it’s a great look for a party!

Suicide Blonde Good news, the two-tone hair trend has made dark roots in blonde hair acceptable (I can hear fireworks!). Not long ago it was considered lack of grooming, today it looks cool and it is even welcome at red carpet events. The easiest way to keep it looking good is to maintain a short hair length, it can be neatly styled or take a rebel turn in no time! Just keep in mind that this trend looks best when the dark root is just a few tones darker than the bleached ends.

Naked Pout Balance is the key when aiming for stylish or natural make-up, so if you want to draw focus to your eyes, opt for nude lips and vice-versa. Tip: when going for toned-down lips, add at least a bit of shine to create a slight contrast with your skin colour.

A COOL WAY TO SHAPE UP If you have struggled to get rid of unsightly body fat with little success, this effective new treatment will help you reach your goals with ease.

T

he Royal Aesthetic Center at Royal Bahrain Hospital introduces the latest in the line of body slimming technology – COOLPLAS. This state-of-the-art cool-sculpting system is comfortable, safe, painless and non-invasive with absolutely no recovery time. The COOLPLAS technology utilises the sensitivity of fat cells to cold injury and selectively eliminates fat tissues without affecting the skin. This is known as Cryolipolysis, and is an effective non-invasive alternative for subcutaneous fat reduction through cellular death (apoptosis). Cellular apoptosis is a biological process whereby cells are eliminated as part of normal cell turnover. When injurious external stimuli (such as freezing) are applied to a target cell, the apoptotic process can be triggered. The injured cell consequently enters an orderly, regulated process of gradual degradation into smaller bodies which are then absorbed by the body’s immune system over time.

A precise and controlled cooling is applied through the skin to the fat layer and cooling is maintained for a predetermined time to damage the fat cells. These then begin a natural removal process that continues for a few months ultimately resulting in gradual fat layer reduction (around two to three months). A single treatment can reduce the fat layer by 20-30 per cent. This technique is turning out to be one of the most popular ways to lose stubborn fat, with the added bonus of no pain, surgical procedures, needles, scarring or downtime. It is so comfortable that you can read, work on your laptop or just relax whilst undertaking the procedure. Call: 17 246-939 / 17 246-800 or visit www. royalbahrainhospital.com

GET SPARKLING SKIN!

This revolutionary procedure erases sun damage, scars, blotchiness and fine lines, leaving you with radiant and softer skin.

D

iamond Peel microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure that stimulates the cells below the skin’s surface, revealing a visibly smoother texture. Joz Salon & Spa answers some frequently asked questions about the treatment.

What is Diamond Peel?

A Diamond Peel is a crystal-free microdermabrasion. During this procedure, a state-of-the-art diamond-cut handpiece with a sandpaper-like surface is used to gently remove the dead skin and debris on the outer layer of your skin, giving a smoother, cleaner and brighter texture.

How is the Diamond Peel different from regular microdermabrasion?

Unlike traditional crystal microdermabrasion, which blows crystals on the skin and then removes them via suction, the Diamond Peel uses a diamond-cut precision handpiece to gently exfoliate the skin. The risk of crystal microdermabrasion is that some crystals can tear the skin or even stay lodged in the skin after the procedure. The process can also be very messy if crystals are used. The Diamond Peel is safe, effective, gentle and clean, doesn’t leave any residue on the skin and allows you to see exactly how much dead skin and debris is removed.

promotes cell turnover. For patients using Retin-A or Retinol products, we recommend a treatment every three to four weeks.

How often should I do a Diamond Peel? For the best maintenance, you should have a Diamond Peel every four to six weeks.

Can I do a Diamond Peel and another procedure at the same time?

Yes. The Diamond Peel is a great procedure to do before getting a facial – it will help products penetrate better. It is also possible to do it before a photofacial or other laser treatments.

What does the Diamond Peel do for the skin? It gently and safely removes the outer layers of the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the epidermis) and any debris on the skin such as surface blackheads, oil and dirt. It’s excellent for anyone whose skin is dull, flaky, dry, dirty and for anyone with clogged pores. It can also help improve the appearance of brown spots and wrinkles, and aids patients with mild to moderate acne by opening up the pores and allowing them to breathe.

Does the Diamond Peel hurt?

No, it does not hurt. You may feel some abrasion and suction but there is no pain involved.

How long does the Diamond Peel procedure take? It takes approximately 45 minutes.

What is the Diamond Peel treatment like at Joz Salon & Spa?

Can I go back to work and put on makeup after the procedure?

Absolutely! It leaves you with a smooth and clean skin. Your face may be a bit flushed but you can definitely put on makeup and go back to work.

What if I am using Retin-A or Retinol? The Diamond Peel is excellent for people using any type of vitamin A derivative which

When you come in for a Diamond Peel, we will examine your face to make sure that you don’t have any broken skin or other contraindications. We will cleanse your face thoroughly and prep it with a degreasing solution, which will allow the Diamond Peel to remove the dead cells more effectively. The procedure will then be performed, after which we will show you how much dead skin and debris was removed during the process. We will then apply a soothing mask to relax and hydrate your skin. You will leave the salon looking and feeling refreshed, and immediately feel the difference!

Top Ten Travel Tips Follow our essential advice for a safe, stress-free holiday.

l Take a picture of the inside details page of your passport, including the number, and store it in your phone and with someone at home. So, should it get lost or stolen, you will have the details to report to police and the local consulate. l Store credit card details in your phone and make sure you have a note of the emergency numbers to call in case your cards should go astray. l Taking at least some cash in the currency of your destination is a good idea as you may find our Bahraini bank and credit cards don’t work in every ATM. Should you be unable to get currency here at the airport, you might want to consider taking American dollars as these are easily exchanged pretty much anywhere. And it’s also a good plan to download a currency converter on your phone. l Check out your country’s consulate or

embassy at your destination. It may not be necessary to register, though this is a good idea if you’re going to be heading off the beaten track, but it’s certainly useful to know where it is and have the contact details handy in case you should need them. l Book travel insurance and make sure it covers not just you and your belongings but also any unscheduled delays. If you’re planning on taking part in any ‘dangerous’ sports or activities, such as skiing, bungee jumping or whitewater rafting, it’s a good idea to check whether these are covered – you may need to pay an additional premium but it’s worth it. l Leave your contact details with someone at home and, if you’re travelling alone, set specific dates and times to check in so they will know you’re safe and all is OK. l Check visa and vaccination requirements well in advance. There can be nothing worse than booking a flight and your visa not coming through in time, so make sure you check before you shell out for plane tickets. Also, some countries will not issue visas on a

passport with l Wear sunscreen fewer than . There’s nothing m six months uch else to say on this to run. If one excep t you’re in this that it’s better to lo o k pale n o w than to re situation, semble a p ru ne in the you may future! need to get a new passport before your trip. l If you’re going to be arriving in a strange place late at night, make sure you’ve booked transport in advance. This is particularly important for lone female travellers. It may cost a little more than taking a local taxi on arrival but it’s better to be safe than sorry. l Always pack a waterproof. It doesn’t matter where you’re going, a lightweight rain cover weighs virtually nothing and you just never know when you might need it. www.womanthismonth.com

Going Solo Liz O’Reilly shares her current bucket list of travel destinations.

F

or many on the island, the summer break is a family affair. The kids are out of school and it’s time to either take that long-awaited vacation or perhaps, if you’re an expat, visit family and friends in your homeland. But, for an increasing number of women, travel is becoming a solo pursuit. Perhaps your partner can’t get time off, maybe there isn’t a partner or friend you choose to share your precious journey time with or maybe you just want a break from the family to have some relaxing alone time. I’m slightly addicted to solo travel; I reckon it’s the best way to meet new people and selfishly get to see just what you want in a new place without worrying about travel companions. These three destinations are on the top of my current lust list.

Costa Rica

I keep reading about Costa Rica’s environmental credentials – it’s big on renewable energy, has banned hunting as a sport and the government even tried, unsuccessfully, to force the closure of its zoos. The country also has a good reputation for travel safety, though, of course, you must exercise common sense, as you would anywhere. If you’re thinking of hitting the tourist trail, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui is a good place to start. With its location at the junction of two major rivers, surrounded by lush green forest and close to several active volcanoes, it’s an adventure lover’s dream destination. A bit more out of the way, Cabo Matapalo on the tip of the Osa Peninsula not only has great surfing beaches but also the

50

Corcovado National Park where a trek might reveal jaguars, toucans and white-faced capuchins. Getting there’s a schlep, at almost 26 hours with stop offs in London and Dallas. But, as they say, good things come to she who waits.

Iceland

It’s one of Europe’s most expensive countries but that hasn’t stopped Iceland from slowly edging its way up the list of most popular, and currently coolest, destinations. And it’s a country that’s known not only for its safety for solo travellers but also the friendliness of its people. Head for the cosmopolitan fabulousness that is Reykjavik, famed for its bars and nightlife. Make sure to check out the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, lots of stunning architecture and, of course, if you go during the summer months, the midnight sun – a period during which it doesn’t get properly dark at all. If you want to experience the more rugged side of this stunning country, you could do worse than getting into the saddle and joining in the annual horseback round-up of Iceland’s famous native ponies. The shortest flight is around 12 hours

via London, which is pretty average for far northern Europe.

Vietnam

Vietnam is known as the most femalefriendly travel destination in Southeast Asia. In fact, the people are so friendly you may well find yourself invited to join them for food or drinks so they can practise their English! A country of major contrasts, there’s so much to see and do but no trip would be complete without a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the underground labyrinth used by the Viet Cong during the war with America. Another mustsee is the stunning Ha Long Bay, in the north of the country close to the border with China. Dotted with 1,600 limestone islands and islets, the bay covers 1,500sq/km and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the regional airlines fly to Hanoi and Saigon with a journey time of 12 hours and upwards. www.womanthismonth.com

showcase FITNESS FIRST

FITNESS FOR THE GLOBETROTTER T

Don’t let your travel plans mar your fitness plans. No matter where and for how long you holiday, there are ways to keep firmly on the fitness track.

he holidays are a few weeks away, and many of us have our vacations chalked out already. While exotic locales and new experiences beckon, does it mean your meticulous exercise regime gets abandoned? The experts at Fitness First don’t think so, if you have pencilled fitness into your itinerary, backed with a solid plan. Just follow the below pointers to return in top shape:

F Define goals: Before you depart on your vacation, ask yourself if you want to return fitter, maintain current fitness levels or simply stick to your disciplined diet while on the move, no matter what. But once you have set up a specific goal, adhere to it even when you’re tempted to break the rules. F Pack for fitness and health: Healthy snacks and workout gear must accompany your beachwear and sunglasses. To keep unhealthy snack-bingeing at bay, pack healthy snacks like nuts, protein bars and grain bars so that you pop in nutrition instead of empty calories when hungry. F Leave time for a workout every day: Every hotel has basic gym facilities nowadays, leaving very litlle scope for excuses. For a workout with a difference (you are on holiday, remember), just lace-up your runners and jog to explore pristine beaches and scenic roads or even hike through a nature trail to blast unwanted calories. Besides, this is also a great way to squeeze in some sightseeing.

52

F Serious workout fun: Of course there are many amongst us who are a lot more serious about getting some physical activity through considerable exercise. Bodyweight exercises are ideal in situations like these. Swimming, running and basic workouts like planks, push-ups and squats can be done anywhere and everywhere; and are always an option when you’re on the move. For some real rejuvenation, try some yoga poses on a mountain top as the sun rises in front of your eyes and feel every nerve come alive!

particular about what goes into your stomach. Stick to real food as much as you can, like salads, fruits, veggies, legumes and nuts. Avoid liquid calories and replenish yourself with plenty of water, juices and watery fruits like melons and oranges to avoid dehydration. Make sure to have meat, fish and eggs too.

adventure sports you’ve been waiting eagerly to enjoy. Do what you can with what you have and where you are. SIMPLY THE BEST

The plug-in hybrid drive system powering this eco-friendly model tops its class for the second year running in the world’s leading engine competition.

F

ollowing its overall victory and two class wins in last year’s International Engine of the Year Awards, the drive system powering the BMW i8 has won in its class – the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre displacement category. The BMW Group’s success in the awards proves the performance potential of the Efficient Dynamics technology package, which, since 2007, has been cutting fuel consumption and emissions. The International Engine of the Year Awards is judged by 63 motoring journalists from 31 countries and selects the best examples in numerous categories. The plug-in hybrid drive system powering the BMW i8 combines the performance of a sports car with the fuel economy of a far smaller model, its makers say. The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 231bhp and drives the rear wheels, while the 131bhp electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket and

58

July 2016

sends its power to the front axle. In the non-electric driving modes, the highvoltage battery is charged directly by the petrol engine. Most energy is fed into the battery in SPORT mode, and during acceleration and braking.

If you are driving in eDrive mode, the highvoltage battery is charged exclusively through brake energy regeneration. This bespoke plug-in hybrid system enables a range of up to 37 kilometres in the EU test

cycle and a top speed of 120kmph on electric power alone. The higher-output of the two power sources drives the rear wheels and uses the electric boost from the hybrid system while, at the same time, offering improved levels of efficiency. The sprint from 0 to 100kmph takes just 4.4 seconds, yet combined fuel consumption – as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles – stands at 2.1-litres per 100km plus 11.9kWh of electricity. The model also boasts a range of driver assistance systems. Using a camera-based support system, the i8 removes all the blind spots from driving. If a person or an obstacle is detected at low speeds, it automatically decelerates. If you’re at risk of a rear-collision at higher speeds it warns you. Surround view and side view camera systems make parking easy. Plus, the high beam assist and speed limit info help make every journey safer, so you can see every situation, from every angle, all the time.

Making No Bones About It Whether you are in the prime of life, or older and wiser, it’s important to safeguard your skeletal structure from going brittle on you. Behnaz Sanjana finds osteoporosis doesn’t tickle the funny bone.

D

r Aleksandar Dimic, rheumatology and internal medicine consultant at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, explains the debilitating disease succinctly: “Osteoporosis is porous bones.” He goes on to say that when bones get rarified due to this condition, they fracture easily. There are different types of osteoporosis, but the most common is age-related and afflicts women – post-menopausal osteoporosis. The onset of menopause sees an abrupt fall in oestrogen levels, which causes osteoporosis. Younger women who suffer amenorrhea or have undergone a hysterectomy also face the possibility of developing osteoporosis due to low levels of oestrogen. Malabsorption of calcium due to gastro intestinal issues is also a potential cause. “There is tight correlation between osteoporosis and levels of oestrogen, no matter the age,” says Dr Dimic. He goes on to explain that there are two kinds of bones – the cortical bone and the trabecular bone – the latter being more prone to osteoporosis because it is seven to 10 times more metabolically active than the cortical bone. “The majority of trabecular bone is found in the vertebrae and a part Oestrogen of the femur called the is responsible femoral neck. Know the Score

Osteoporosis is diagnosed by assessing one’s bone mineral density. A bone mineral density (BMD) test measures how much calcium and other types of minerals are in a specific area of your bone, the result of which is a T score. “A score of up to minus one indicates normal bone density. A T score lower than minus 2.5 indicates osteoporosis, and needs to be treated with bisphosphonates, a class of drugs that prevent the loss of bone mass. If this low score is accompanied with a fracture, then it is termed as severe osteoporosis,” he explains. A T score below minus one, but higher than minus 2.5 is osteopenia. It indicates low bone density, and is a precursor to Osteoporosis. “If left untreated, it will develop into osteoporosis in the future. Proper treatment can halt it in its tracks,” states Dr Dimic. BMD is measured by a Dexa-Scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or DXA) which uses a low energy X-ray to evaluate bone density in the hip and/or spine. importance for women over the age of 50 in are the best course to prevent osteopenia from reporting for the DXA test, taking into account turning into full-blown osteoporosis. their risk factors. “Risk factors are early If you’re a way off from turning 50, now is menopause, in your forties or late thirties, the time to take preventive measures against a very thin body or a high caffeine intake this disorder. Bone mineral density peaks in adolescence and reaches a plateau till the age of 50, after which there is an abrupt dip in levels. If you have an appropriate peak, it is less likely to go under the minus 2.5 levels.” He advocates that there is no need for calcium supplements if you stock up well on calcium naturally available in dairy products, fish and vegetables. He does mention though, that women must keep track of and be aware of their calcium intake as well. “Women need one gram of calcium, and one to 1.5 grams of calcium every day after the 50-year mark. Drinking 250 mililitres of milk is 100 to 200 miligrams of calcium, 100 grams of cheese is 200 to 300 miligrams of calcium. If you eat less dairy products, then take a supplement.” July 2016

LIVING WITH EPILEPSY Neurology specialist, Dr Piyush Ostwal, aims to reassure patients.

T

he epilepsies are a spectrum of disorders caused by excessive firing of the neurons from one or more parts of the brain. Patients may experience strange sensations, emotions and behaviour or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms and loss of consciousness. The most recognised type of seizure is a generalised tonic-clonic seizure in which the patient falls unconscious with jerky movements, stiffness, rolling of the eyes, frothing from the mouth and biting of the tongue. Attacks usually last a few minutes and the patient returns to normal over a few hours. Some patients have seizures which are more subtle and may involve just one part of the body, called focal seizures. They may just lose touch with their surroundings for a few seconds to minutes. These attacks still need medical attention. Patient evaluation generally includes either a CT or MRI scan

of the brain to look for any structural abnormality. Another common test is EEG which records electrical activity of the brain. But it must be remembered that tests may be absolutely normal while a patient still suffers epilepsy. A tremendous amount of research has been done in the last few decades and many new drugs with minimal side effects have been launched. Medications are taken long-term and will be gradually increased to establish the correct dosage and doctors recommend keeping a seizure diary to help with treatment options. So having a diagnosis of epilepsy is not the end of road and there are many treatment options available. Research is ongoing and it is our endeavor to maintain smiles on the faces of children and adults with epilepsy. For more information email the doctor on piyush.ostwal@bsh.com.bh

Here he shares one of his favourite home-made dishes, grilled gochujang lamb chops, a Korean speciality that requires patience but is sure to impress. www.womanthismonth.com

GRILLED GOCHUJANG LAMB CHOPS 3 Pieces of lamb, each around 70g – cleaned and set aside in the fridge Marinade - 15g ghochujang (Korean chili paste) - 6ml sake - 6ml mirin - 7ml soy sauce (Kikoman) - Pinch red chilli powder - 1/2tsp sesame oil Method: In a sauce pot add sake and mirin, heat through and flame to burn off the alcohol. As the flame dies down, add the other ingredients separately, keeping the sesame oil until last, and whisk it well! Take it off the heat and set aside to cool. Once cold, remove the lamb chops from the fridge, marinade and return to the fridge for a minimum of 10 hours. Spicy Teriyaki Sauce – (3 portions) - 70ml soy sauce - 50g sugar - 10ml sesame oil - 1 tsp dry red chilli crushed - 10g garlic paste Method: In a sauce pan, put soy sauce and add sugar and garlic paste. Heat until the sugar dissolves and add the sesame oil. Stir for two minutes. Add

crushed dry red chilli and remove from heat to cool. Accompaniment Mashed sweet potato: Peel and roast sweet potato. Once roasted, mash and mash and set aside. Final Method: Place the lamb chops on a pre-heated grill and cook for two minutes. Swipe clockwise to get a nice cross mark then turn and repeat the process. Finish in the oven as required depending on the cooking level you desire. While the chops are cooking, toss a few asparagus spears into a pan with butter and seasoning. In another pan, put butter and add the mashed sweet potato. Add a little cooking cream and seasoning to taste. Now set the plate and sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on top of the chops. Serve with spicy teriyaki sauce in a separate sauce bowl. July 2016

An Affable Iftar Behnaz Sanjana sampled the glorious Iftar spread at this five-star hotel and came away on a happy high.

A

s the golden rays of dusk enrobe Bahrain, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa stages a lavish Iftar buffet within the serene heights of its Al Fanar ballroom. The large, spacious area is tastefully decorated to echo the sentiments of the season. After settling into our seats, my dining companion and I headed to the buffet area. A quick glance around the place told me that the hotel had left no stone unturned to dish out a fantastic array of food to suit the most discerning palates. The two-tiered spread of salads and appetisers was a refreshing start to our meal and had everything from staples like chicken and pineapple salad, pasta salad and tabouleh to the more exotic artichoke salad, Levantine-inspired Shanklish and, to add international appeal, assorted crudités. Once our appetites were effectively whetted, we made a beeline for the mains which were laid out across five tables! One of them was a live crepe station that dished out chicken, beef and shrimp wrapped in savoury crepes, making for cutesy little packets. The centre tables were lined with colossal, colourful Moroccan tagines. Their conical tops suggestively rested on the side of

70

the utensil, beckoning beguilingly to take a peak. I stopped briefly to appreciate the thoughtful décor of the buffet area. The glazed tagines stood against a backdrop of the traditional Arabic sadu, the traditional red and black fabric with geometric print, and flanked by towering green palm leaves. But my mind very quickly wandered back to the heavenly aromas wafting out of the tagines; they seemed to grasp our hands and draw us closer, until we

couldn’t spoon the food onto our plates fast enough. Having forgotten to carry my spare stomach along, I stayed loyal to the remarkable range of quintessentially Arabic delicacies in the face of the cornucopia of fine food laid out before us. I dived into the real deal straight away; lamb thareed, a hearty meat stew layered on top of flat bread, and lamb with fareek; smoked young wheat cooked with meat. The lamb mousaka tasted as divine as it looked. But the star on my plate was a Ramadan favourite - Harees, which is slow-cooked lamb in wheatberries; resulting in a comforting gooey, meaty mass. The fish tagine did absolute justice to the varied wonders of the sea world, and the breaded hamour and whole baked salmon were a seafood lover’s dream. The former had just the right amount of crunch while the latter’s lemon tinged flakes were just melt-inyour-mouth. Raw cuts of king fish, lobster,

shrimp and safi, beef steaks, skewers of kofta kababs, shish tawouk and minced lamb for Arayes were laid out on ice, to be cooked to order. My companion tucked into some Indian fare as well; and her expression as she chowed down looked far from disappointed. Almost satiated, we looked to the dessert counter for a sweet ending to our decadent dinner. The dessert buffet was a riot of colours. The golden browns, pistachio greens and pleasant pinks and dark chocolate shades of various Arabic and international desserts dazzled before us, making it hard to decide what to eat and what to miss. But the rich chocolate mousse, the Oshbulbul and the Mamool dates transported me straight to heaven. A fun photo-op at the staged Arabic seating (complete with a wooden camel) was a wonderful culmination to our evening, where I decided I was definitely coming back for more.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS RAMADAN

This popular shopping mall embraces the true spirit of Ramadan by launching a campaign to help families in need

A

s an initiative to help families in need, Majid Al Futtaim has launched its 10th annual ‘Make a Difference’ Ramadan campaign to encourage local communities to donate items at its shopping malls, entertainment destinations and Carrefour stores across the region. For the seventh consecutive year in Bahrain, the campaign will encourage visitors to donate to the less fortunate. At City Centre Bahrain people will be able to donate new or gently-used goods such as clothes, toys, books and non-perishable food items in specially marked bins located at the customer service desk. Collected items will then be handed over to charitable and humanitarian organisation The Islamic Association, to support local communities in need. Last year, more than 9,500 bags of donations were distributed across the charity’s channels to thousands of families. Alain Bejjani, chief executive officer of Majid Al Futtaim Holding, says: “In line with our vision to ‘Create Great Moments for Everyone, Everyday’, the ‘Make a Difference’ Ramadan campaign brings us together with local communities to support those in need during the Holy Month. For 10 years, we have seen the campaign help capture the true spirit of Ramadan amongst communities and motivate individuals and families to make a difference by helping those less fortunate. The campaign continues to be one of our most successful annual charity activations and we hope to increase donations once again this year.” Majid Al Futtaim partners with charitable organisations such as

the Life Makers in Egypt, Bassma in Lebanon, Dar Al-Atta in Oman and Red Crescent in the UAE. Last year, the company collected more than 36 tons of donated items, which were distributed to families in need across the region through its humanitarian aid partners. “Thanks to Majid Al Futtaim’s annual charity initiative and City Centre Bahrain’s ideal platform reaching millions of visitors, The Islamic Association will be able to provide great support to families in need. We would like to thank everyone that will be donating this Ramadan, and are hoping to exceed previous years’ results,” said Shaikh Dr Abdullatif Al Mahmoud, chairman of The Islamic Association. “The Holy Month is a time for peace, togetherness and solidarity. City Centre Bahrain’s visitors will be able to truly make a difference and help communities in need, while enjoying the ambiance of this sacred period of the year with our beautiful themed décor and Arabic hospitality,” said Duaij

Khalifa Al Rumaihi, senior mall manager for City Centre Bahrain. On Monday, June 20, 2016, in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Development, City Centre Bahrain will host its traditional Gergaoun celebrations, from 9pm to midnight. Inviting all families to participate, the lifestyle destination encourages little ones to come in their colourful traditional outfits as they will collect candies and nuts from participating retailers, while a live traditional band with the ‘Fraisah’ will tour inside the mall with the kids. City Centre Bahrain will feature its beautiful themed décor, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Visitors will enjoy traditional Arabic hospitality with complimentary coffee and dates, as well as live entertainment by oud players, setting the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. PARENTING | advice

Need to Know Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center. Each month she answers your parenting questions. TO VACCINATE OR NOT TO VACCINATE?

I’ve read a lot about the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for young girls. My doctor is advising it but there seems to be some controversy surrounding it. What are your thoughts please doctor? HPV has long haunted the human race; nearly all sexually active adults carry some of HPVs’ 170 strains. And while many of these are harmless, amid the multitude mutants there are those with effects that are anything but benign: subtypes 6 and 11 can lead to genital warts; subtypes 16 and 18, amongst others, can lead to cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal and oral cancers. Type 16 together with type 18 is responsible for 70 per cent of the cases of cervical cancer in Europe; and types 6 and 11 together are responsible for around 90 per cent of cases of genital warts. This is not some mere hypothetical risk – over 90 per cent of cervical cancers are caused by HPV, a cancer which claimed the lives of 270,000 women worldwide in 2012 alone. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women aged 15 to 34. Unlike the majority of cancers, it is mainly a disease of the young, with 62 per cent of cases occurring in women who are under 50. The American Cancer Society's estimates for cervical cancer in the United States for 2016 are: l About 12,990 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed. l About 4,120 women will die from cervical cancer. The vaccine currently used in the UK is called Gardasil. It was chosen over an alternative called Cervarix because it gives

80

July 2016

wider protection. In clinical trials, Gardasil was over 99 per cent effective at averting cancer caused by HPV types 16 or 18 in young women, and it is expected that vaccination will reduce the number of cases of the most common kind of cervical cancer by at least 70 per cent. However, it is important that girls who are vaccinated continue to take up the offer of cervical smear testing later in life, so that other kinds of cervical cancer can be picked up. HPV world-wide vaccine programmes are currently being appraised. Evidence from these shows falling numbers of young people with pre-cancerous cells, and protection from the HPV vaccine is expected to be long-term. The Public Health England 2015 report shows a significant fall in HPV infections in young women since the vaccine was introduced. In 2010-13, HPV types 16 and 18 were 66 per cent less common in sexually active young women aged 16 to 18 than they were

in 2008. These early findings support the view that the HPV vaccination programme will have an impact on the numbers of cases of cervical cancer in future. Before September 2014, girls in the UK received three doses of the HPV vaccine. However, from September 2014 the number of doses was reduced from three to two for those who first receive the vaccine aged 12 to 13. This was because research has demonstrated that two doses of the vaccine give a level of protection that is just as good and lasts just as long as three doses, as long as girls are aged 12 to 13 at first dose. For those who start the vaccination course over the age of 13, it is recommended that they continue to receive the three doses. In Australia, data from sexual health clinics illustrate that cases of genital warts in younger women have fallen since vaccination was initiated. In 2007, the year HPV vaccination started,

over 11 per cent of women under 21 were diagnosed with genital warts at their first visit to a clinic. By 2014 this number had fallen to just over one per cent. There was also a decline in cases among 21 to 30-year-old women; some of these would have been vaccinated against HPV. In the over 30 age group, who did not receive HPV vaccination, there was no change between 2007 and 2014. Sadly, scaremongering anecdotes without scientific evidence all too often masquerade unchallenged as public interest stories, and the Gardasil controversy is no exception. The question is are they anti-cancer or are they anti-sex? A major apprehension appears to be that without the trepidation of genital warts or cervical cancer, young individuals will become more promiscuous, and that the HPV vaccine hence, in effect, promotes behaviour deemed immoral. We cannot afford to allow squeamishness on the subject www.womanthismonth.com

of sex to dictate health policy, nor should we permit myths to blur our judgement. The lives of countless young women and men count on us being guided by evidence rather than rhetoric. The second category of opposition is rooted in safety fears. Like all clinical compounds, Gardasil has been extensively tested for years, constantly monitored for potential adverse effects. By all measures it has been found to be a safe and effective intervention. The complication rate is low, with the most frequent reactions being irritation at the site of injection, and fainting postinjection - precisely the minor temporary reactions seen with any shot. The case for the safety of the HPV vaccine is supported by myriads of clinical substantiation and years of data, whereas the opposing side is comprised of anecdotes, emotive petition and effortlessly exposed allegations. Despite all the sound and fury, the unassailable nittygritty of the matter is that the HPV vaccine has the potential to save lives.

SPORT CRAZY

My son is obsessed with sport. He seems healthy and fit but does seem to get a lot of injuries and I struggle to get him to eat enough. How do I make sure he’s not missing out on essential dietary requirements? Too frequently we hear about the millions of children and adolescents who are sedentary, overweight and obese. The amount of physical activity recommended for kids aged six to 17 is at least one hour per day of indoor or outdoor sport all year round. F The experts’ thinking about the needs of active youths and how hormones may influence child athletes is changing. While not everyone agrees with the specifics, there’s one common refrain: Children are not small adults. Their rapid growth and www.womanthismonth.com

increase in muscle mass changes their nutrient and fluid needs in unique ways. The distribution of macronutrients recommended for active children and child athletes is the same as for less active peers. Protein aids muscle recovery when consumed after exercise and should account for 10 to 15 per cent of calories. Recommendations for total protein intake are 0.95g/kg/day for kids aged four to 13 and 0.85g/ kg/day for adolescents aged 14 to 18. Carbohydrate is the most important source of energy for an active child or adolescent and should represent 55 per cent of calories (more on heavy training days), about five to eight grams per kilogram of body weight. Fat should account for 25 to 30 per cent of total calories. Emphasise the wholesome fat that’s found in avocados, tuna, canola oil, soy and nuts. Fluid intake should be overseen and monitored during and after physical activity. This should result in an hourly fluid intake of 13ml/kg. Fluid replacement postexercise should include about 4ml/kg for each hour of activity. More is needed for children who sweat heavily.

July but hasn’t yet started her periods. Is this normal or should I take her to the doctor? Puberty starts when the pituitary gland begins to produce two hormones, luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which cause the ovaries to enlarge and begin producing

oestrogens. The growth spurt starts shortly after breasts begin to develop, and the first menstrual cycle begins about two to three years later. A girl who has not started to have breast development by the age of 13 is considered to be delayed. Some girls with delayed puberty are simply late maturers, but once they start, puberty will progress normally. This is called constitutional delayed puberty. So it is likely to occur if the mother started her periods after age 14 (the average is about 12 and a half) or if the father was a ‘late bloomer’. Decreased body fat is a major cause of pubertal delay in girls. It can be seen in girls who are very athletic. If these aren't the case, I suggest you visit a paediatric endocrinologist who will provide you with expert opinion. If you have a question for Dr Jinan, please email editor@ redhousemarketing.com.

Your Month Indoors If you’ve got youngsters, from tinies to teens, to entertain over the long, hot summer, look no further than these new releases to guarantee a few hours of blissful peace. FINDING DORY The big summer release, this follows on from the much loved Finding Nemo (remember him?). The adorable Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) is a cute-as-a-button, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. With help from her friends Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them. Her journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species. Dory now knows that her family reunion will only happen if she can save her mum and dad from captivity. Remember, kids, Dory makes a great movie, not a great pet! GHOSTBUSTERS A remake of the 1984 movie with women in the lead roles, this is one for the older kids. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Bergman (Melissa McCarthy) write a book suggesting ghosts are real. However, the tome comes back to haunt Gilbert (pun intended) when she later lands a prestigious teaching job only to be laughed out of academia when the book resurfaces. Gilbert reunites with Bergman and others on a mission to save the world when ghosts invade Manhattan.

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS Ever wondered what your pets get up to when you leave for work or school each day? Well, now’s your chance to find out. Set in a Manhattan apartment building, the pets hang out and trade tales about their humans. All is well until new guy, Duke, a scruffy mongrel, joins the pack. Together with the top dog he finds himself on the streets where the two meet a seemingly delightful bunny, Snowball. But it turns out Snowball leads an army of abandoned pets who are determined to get back at humanity and every ownerloving pet. The dogs must thwart this plot and make it back in time for dinner. A story with a moral, fun twists and cute animals. What more could you want?

THE BFG Roald Dahl’s stories are loved by young and old alike, so this really is a movie for all the family. It tells the story of young Londoner, Sophie, who is transported to Giant Country. The Big Friendly Giant of the title takes to the young girl and they strike up a firm friendship. But some of the other giants, who have been known to eat humans, are proving troublesome. Together Sophie and The BFG travel to England to try and convince a disbelieving Queen Victoria and her maid that there is trouble in store.

PARENTING| mum's word

Motherhood Moments As most of you know, my area of expertise is fashion and beauty, however, I recently became a mum (once again after 10 years), so the baby world is a territory I’m exploring as if for the first time. My intention here is to share some of my findings and feelings with you. Hope you enjoy them!

I think Mother Nature really does her role pretty well. When I try to remember the difficult sleepless nights and all the crying from my daughter’s very young years, I get nothing. Which means, why not have a second child? It's like it wasn’t that challenging at all. I know it’s been a long time, but wouldn’t I remember how laborious this could be? Obviously not! To me, well, it all started during pregnancy; new trends, new season and a big tummy, so going shopping wasn’t exactly my favourite pastime. But how do you resist the fashion world when you basically live in it? The way out was to shop for accessories, new footwear, handbags, necklaces, earrings, rings and every other trinket you can imagine. My thought was: I can wear it all after the baby is born as well. Perfect! My baby is now six months old and all hope of wearing accessories (that I find essential for

any look) is reducing drastically. I had to wave good-bye to my beloved heels, not practical and sometimes even dangerous. Necklaces are his favourite toy and of course it goes straight to his mouth. My Bahraini pearl ring, bought to celebrate his birth, has two diamonds, so it is pointy and could easily hurt him. I have two new unused handbags. To carry a fancy bag plus his huge baby bag (with diapers, bottles, pacifiers, blanket, clothes and so many other things that I forget) is unreal; so I have to choose, and of course his bag always wins! I have the feeling my fashion days are gone, that I will never wear my beautiful shoes and silky tops again. It is unusual to leave home without a spit or two on my top. That’s why white tops are lately my favourite colour, you can barely spot the milky mess – I’m discovering a whole new world of tricks

these days. However, I know for sure that this will pass, after all I have living proof that this stage doesn’t last for ever. I’ve been there and done that, so I can do it again. The only problem is that I will probably not enjoy my old wardrobe any more once I’m finally able to wear it again. The solution? Look for new styles to adapt to my new being. After all, we do change when we become mums, not only our bodies, but also we start seeing things in a different way and this, my dear reader, for me, is the best thing! Transformation is good! I’m looking forward to seeing how I will view myself at the end of this first year and which changes will stay. Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month

Love is in the air this month and romance follows your every step, particularly where any new relationship is concerned. Above all you should consider taking things slowly because nothing good or lasting comes from rushing things. On the career side you may have to come to terms with an unpalatable decision but you have to put your own personal issues to one side and make it work.

Cancer

Pisces

Leo

Aries

Family life has never seemed so good and the future bodes well for all matters involving the home. You will find yourself reflective and perhaps even discover an emotional side to yourself you were completely unable to admit existed. Matters of the heart may be less trouble-free and you should be careful not to speak before you think. Your misplaced words could cause more than just heartache to a partner. You are entering a very exciting period of your life, especially where a new business venture is concerned and it is going to change a great deal about your outlook between now and the end of the year. Get as many outstanding affairs in order as you can because time will be precious and your focus needs to be all about what you're planning now. On the relationship front you might face a challenge over the affections of a third party. Be careful what you wish for....

Virgo

A relationship that you are seriously involved in takes a new twist when you discover your partner may have a secret admirer. You could even come across information which leads you to question the direction of your love life. However, you are advised to curb any immediate suspicions until you are certain of the situation. This is an interesting time in your life and you need to remove distractions.

Libra

After a period of stagnation, a new project or development will lift off with a great measure of success this month and you should grasp the opportunity. You are going to have to give it your all and then you can expect great success. You have the ability to lay down a significant foundation here that can take you places if you’re smart.

Scorpio

July sees you bidding farewell to one source www.womanthismonth.com

The month ahead is laced with a note of caution and you are advised to curb your typically extrovert character and tread carefully. If there is any move planned, safety precautions should be taken. This could include insurance and specifically involve jewellery. A small child may also be the instigator of an embarrassing comment concerning an aspect of a relationship you would not rather have out in the open.

of long-term aggravation but no sooner is this resolved than another almost immediately crawls out of the woodwork! A long-standing friendship is entering a time of turmoil and you may discover challenges that are not going to be overcome without some difficult home truths finally being told. On the health front you should review your insurance policy or you may be in for a surprise.

July sees you breaking out of your selfimposed shell and taking a new grip on your life. If you’ve been feeling down or depressed, it all stops now! Life will become more of an enjoyable challenge and you will relish the chance to involve yourself. Work will bring about positive change and a new arena from which you will learn a great deal. You may also employ the more ruthless side of your character and finally detach yourself from anyone holding you back.

Sagittarius

Taurus

This month will present you with an opportunity to live out a dream or put an idea into practice that may have seemed beyond your reach. There is the prospect of you travelling away from home for several months and perhaps even renting a new property. However, a relationship may suffer as a consequence and rumours or words of unrest concerning your partner may arrive from an unexpected source.

Capricorn

A conquest or hurdle that has hindered your progress to date will finally be overcome but not without a few challenges first – so don’t celebrate quite yet! One thing you should ask yourself about the situation is how you managed to get caught in it to start with. After all this isn’t the first time something like this has happened and it could be more about changing yourself rather than the others around you.

This month points towards the learning of a new trade or perhaps further studies of some kind. Any endeavour in pursuit of this aim will lead to both long-term financial improvements and also a greater inner satisfaction. You may be propositioned or even tempted into some secretive manoeuvre by an admirer but you are advised to think clearly before succumbing to any such proposal. The number 7 will also have a positive impact on your working ambitions.

Gemini

This is a good month for you to begin saving towards a future investment. You may come into a small amount of money and you are advised to use this as the foundation to finance any proposed scheme. However, you should not rush into anything seek the correct advise. A friend may come to you for advice concerning a delicate matter. Think carefully before you give your answer. July 2016
