love this time of year; the weather's finally cooling down and National Day and Christmas are just around the corner with loads of events and parties to go to. We've expanded our Month in Focus section specially to make sure you have all the details.

And, of course, all these festivities require looks to take you from office to dance floor and beyond. Check out our packed fashion pages for inspiration on dressing for the party season. If you want a special something that will really help you light up the night, don't miss this month's designer focus on Bahrain resident Sabine Mueller whose illuminated fashions will add the wow to your winter wardrobe.

Fittingly for the close of the year, our interview section includes some strong women whose life paths can offer inspiration as we head towards 2018. Maria Khoury is the first female boss at the country's National Institution for Human Rights and is determined to push for more collaborative working in the future.

Ibada Ahmed shares a message of hard work and strong self belief, two attributes that helped her become Kenya's youngest ever bank manager. And Alana McConalogue is aiming to make Christmas special for some of the Kingdom's poorest residents with a Shoe Box Appeal, for which I'll be doing my bit.

Another reason I love December is that it's time to put together our annual Gift Guide and I always have a great time trawling through the fashion shoots and product lists that come through to make sure we can give you some great ideas - I shall be leaving these pages tantalisingly displayed in the hope that my loved ones will take the Carolina Herrera-shaped hint!

I've also particularly enjoyed putting together the travel pages any excuse to look at pictures of bears, wolverine and whales. I think I know where I'm going for my next holiday.

GIRL POWER Three Arab women have made the cut to take their places on the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2017.

The UAE’s Minister of Tolerance, Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, is the world’s 36th most powerful woman. Appointed in 2016 as part of a cabinet reshuffle, she has previously served as the Minister of International Cooperation and Minister of Economy and Planning for the UAE. Saudi national, Lubna S Olayan, is the world’s 59th most powerful woman. She serves as the CEO of the conglomerate Olayan Financing Group, which has businesses spread across the Middle East. And Raja Easa Al Gurg, managing director of the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group in the UAE, is the 90th most powerful woman. She is responsible for the operations of all 27 of the group’s companies and also heads the Dubai Business Women’s Council.

HIJABI BARBIE Toy maker Mattel honoured Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first American Olympian to compete while wearing a hijab, as a Barbie Shero by gifting her a one-of-a-kind doll in her likeness. The doll was unveiled at the Glamour Women of the Year LIVE Summit, an annual event that gives young women the opportunity to hear from select past and present Women of the Year honorees, as well as other influential leaders from a variety of fields.

The Barbie Shero programme recognises women who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls. Ibtihaj was presented with her doll by last year’s Shero, body activist and model, Ashley Graham.

DRIVING FORCE An advert by drinks giant Coca Cola, which shows a Saudi woman struggling as her father teaches her to drive then performing perfectly after taking a drink of the fizzy pop, has attracted mixed emotions. Some say it’s a great celebration of the sea change across the border, which allows women to get behind the wheel. Others reckon the subject is too serious and sensitive to the be used in an ad campaign. Personally, I thought it was a lovely way to mark this great news. I’d love to hear what you think.

ON THE WATER I’m very excited at the launch of the Bahrain Rowing & Canoe Centre, which opened its doors at Bahrain Bay during the recent sea festival. We’re surrounded by water, so it’s long been a cause of consternation to me that there was nowhere to try sculling or to dig a paddle into the waves from a dragon boat. I’ve tried the latter, many years ago, and can’t wait to get back on board – it’s great fun and a good work out too. Hopefully we’ll even see dragon boat racing in the waters round Bahrain Bay in the not too distant future.

WELCOME WYNDHAM I wouldn’t normally be overly impressed at the opening of yet another new hotel. But, with 441 rooms, the Wyndham Garden in Juffair is the brand’s biggest property in the world! And what for me is more interesting is that it boasts seven speciality restaurants (be still my greedy beating heart) including Via Brasil, an all-you-can-eat barbecue outlet with meats served churrasco style, and Terasse@28, a rooftop bar serving Belgian and German delicacies. I feel a bit of after work sampling coming on.

Bahraini Women's Day is celebrated throughout the island on December 1 to commemorate the achievements and creative contribution made by women to the development and progress of the Kingdom.

It highlights the importance and the vital role played by females in public life. This year’s theme is dedicated to women in the engineering field.

Check out artist Giuse Maggi’s latest collection of sustainable art including functional objects and wall hangings inspired by the rich heritage of the Arab tradition and the colours of the Bahraini landscape. Born and raised in Italy, Giuse is a multidisciplinary artist who loves to explore materials and their potentiality with antique and new technddiques. She had been working with glass for two decades, until a few years ago, when she discovered the world of recycling and sustainable art; since then she has been combining plastic, metals and fibres with glass, and experimenting with weaving and

I bet you’re just like me, waiting for that first little breeze to come to the island to get your boots walking again. We might not have the necessary drops in temperature to justify them, but one thing we certainly have is a sense of style! And boy, boots are the ‘it’ item in any winter wardrobe. They look great with jeans, dresses and even with tailored trousers – those that end just below or on the ankle are perfect for this look. One thing’s for sure, boots are versatile and scream out loud that you are ready for winter.

They are, of course, great foot warmers, so you must invest in a pair if you're planning to fly off to colder climes. erman Sabine has been in Bahrain nine years, having come here to join her husband, who works in Saudi Arabia. The couple met in 2007 at a karate workshop in Japan and it was, pretty much, love at first sight. Sabine finished her studies in business administration and headed east.

Two children quickly followed and both karate and business administration fell by the wayside as the 38-year-old concentrated on being a mum until one day she was surfing the web and had a ‘lightbulb moment’. She explains: “I came across a picture of a wedding dress with LEDs [light emitting diodes] embroidered into it. It was like a piece of art!

Fashion represents a very emotional, luxury event in your life, it doesn’t just fill a basic need. Integrating light elements into clothing never fails to attract astonishment and guarantees a ‘wow’ effect when people see it for the first time.”

Further research revealed that other designers such as Chanel and Dolce&Gabbana were also lighting up their collections, but only in the area of accessories. So, Sabine decided to try her hand in the fashion industry, designing and making her own LED pieces.

After several months spent speaking with suppliers, she was able to source light, flexible and washable lighting chains, which she stitches into her own designs of clothing and household pieces, from abayas to table runners.

Her first, and still favourite, production, was an evening dress – similar to a low-key bridal gown – which she both designed and then illuminated.

She adds: “The possibilities to integrate this technology into clothing are limitless.”

The lights are operated with a battery pack and can last for several hours, depending on how many bulbs are used. Good as it seems, this raises a question of energy sustainability, which greatly concerned Sabine.

She says: “I learned that the fashion industry is the world’s second-most-polluting industry!

The initiative is a global movement sparked by one teen’s struggle with bullying and flamed by the staggering fact that one in five young people will be a victim of cyber bullying.

Balenciaga Tops Lyst The fashion brand that gave us platform Crocs and the infamous IKEA tote, priced at a cool USD2,145, has knocked Gucci off the coveted top spot in the highest performing fashion brands official global rankings, prepared by Lyst and The Business of Fashion (BoF).

According to the latest data analysed by BoF in partnership with search platform Lyst — which tracks 4.5 million data points per hour from over 65 million annual consumers, five million products and 12,000 brands — the Demna Gvasalia-designed brand climbed two places to top the hottest brand ranking in the third quarter of 2017.

In a move that’s got the worlds of both food and fashion asking “Why?” design duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbano have followed up the carrot- and cannoli-printed outfits sent down the runway in their SS18 collection by launching a limited edition range of pasta. The pair have partnered with much-loved Italian maker Pastificio di Martino to produce just 5,000 packs of pasta (original recipe unchanged) which will come with a D&G apron at a reported USD120. New Face at Weill Parisian fashion house Weill is taking a new direction with the appointment of Mathilde Castello Branco at the head of its design studio.

The Franco-Brazilian designer studied fashion in Paris before beginning her career at the Hermès readyto-wear studio under the aegis of Martin Margiela. She then spent 10 years with Lanvin working with Alber Elbaz before being put in charge of the art direction of the Azzaro brand.

She brings the promise of new inspiration to the house’s ready-to-wear collections. Her signature is a feminine, delicate fashion with a subtle ability to break with convention. “I like surprises: the unexpected detail, the original reinvention in the cut of a garment, surprising inventive mixes that give character to the silhouette,” says Mathilde. Tackling A Tricky Issue The island’s first female head of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) tells Liz O’Reilly of her passion for the job and plans for the future.

M

aria Khoury was unanimously elected chairwoman of the NIHR in November, becoming the first woman to serve in the role. While delighted, she also points out that this is not so unusual for Bahrain, saying: “I can’t deny that it’s special to be elected and have my colleagues’ trust and I shall strive to be the right person for the job.

Whether it’s a man or a woman, the challenges are the same – the person will be assessed on their achievements. Bahrain society is open and transparent and I don’t believe there’s a gender bias.”

Maria was appointed to the NIHR as a commissioner by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in 2013. She is a member of Bahrain’s Christian minority and her family has been in the Kingdom more than 100 years. Prior to joining the institution, she was in media for many years but says, with this appointment she “found her passion, I love this job”.

The NIHR is independent of government and anyone resident in Bahrain can make a complaint if they feel their human rights have been violated. Its role is to investigate such allegations and help to resolve them, whether by referring them to a legal body or offering legal assistance, working with the complainant and offering advice on how to take matters forward should the issue fall outside the NIHR’s remit.

Two fairly recent initiatives are the opening of a centre to work against human trafficking, positioned close to the labour authority in Sehla – which frequently deals with issues raised by domestic workers – and the establishment of a 24-hour hotline number on which people can call to register a complaint.

We are the voice of Bahrain and we have the power to work with bodies locally, which gives us credibility.

We are also a member of GANHRI, the global alliance of human rights organisations, which all international institutions either belong to or strive towards.”

Another big part of the organisation’s work is in human rights training, for both its own staff and for public sector and NGO workers, to ensure they are aware of the issues in their everyday practice. NGOs can include anything from disabled organisations to charity groups,

dealing with various areas.

And the NIHR also has the right to perform unannounced visits to places of detention – from prisons to psychiatric hospitals and juvenile holding facilities. Maria, herself, was trained by the UK’s HM Inspectorate of Prisons, and says: “You learn to use your eyes, but you also have to be involved – for example if someone says the food is bad, you have to taste it – and you have to be able to work to set benchmarks of what is acceptable and what is not.”

She adds that things have changed in recent years,explaining: “The landscape on human rights has broadened and we have taken huge positive steps. We can say that the police have been trained and retrained to have a human rights-based

approach, as has the judiciary, and we have good relations with the police and also with the law faculty at the University of Bahrain, which sends students to us for training.”

For the future Maria’s aim is to build teamwork within the organisation between the commissioners and the committees and also to expand the relationship with the island’s NGOs. She concludes: “We do have challenges that we face with a strong stride. We are committed to our work and we work with passion and hope that we will make a difference, but we need to work together, that’s the most important thing – one hand alone doesn’t clap – and we must work together not just as an internal team but also with society.”

Africa’s Golden Girl From becoming her country’s youngest bank manager to being a venture capitalist in food security in Africa – on a visit to Bahrain, Ibada Ahmed shared essential life lessons with Behnaz Sanjana.

enyan national of Somali descent, Ibada Ahmed took on a job at Chase Bank at the tender age of 19. “I had no professional experience to speak of, but hailing from an entrepreneurial family, I could convince my interviewers that although I am no banker, I’m a learner first.” And with that she started her professional journey, with a salary of just $200 per month.

“In the first year I held a junior position in Forex sales; I’d done exceptionally well. The ability to sell is in my blood. I got a promotion every year, sometimes twice a year, thanks to the dynamic growth of the bank at the time,” she remembers.

She was soon promoted to the head office, working in the actual money markets. “After the trading closed for the day, I would use my free time to learn how other departments worked, which changed things for me. It was interesting to learn how a financial institution ran, from the credit department to the operations, to customer service and treasury.”

Islamic banking, a fairly new prevalence at the time lured Ibada with a new challenge. In spite of her superiors advising against it, she took on the role of assistant manager assets and liabilities of Islamic banking as the next step in her career. “In treasury, the pay hikes and bonuses were great, but I thought ‘what more?’ This calculated risk was the turning point of my career. And I tell people even today, that to achieve greatness, you must take a leap of faith, believe in yourself and persist at it.” She gave the new ballgame her all. “I’d never worked that hard,” she says.

In 2010 Ibada was offered the opportunity to become manager of Islamic banking in a key branch of Chase Bank. It made her, at just 23 years of age, the youngest bank manager in Kenya, endorsed by the Central Bank of Kenya no less. She says her age was never a hurdle.

“My team supported and respected me for my excellence at my work; it was no struggle, really,” she explains.

She attributes her early success (and the

journalists lining up for interviews) to her attitude of discipline and the thirst for more knowledge.

When she crossed paths with an investor bullish on microfinance, Ibada jumped in on the venture, to become CEO of Fursa Leo Micro Finance. With the aim of supporting more women, 80 per cent of her start-up backing was for females. “We observed that whatever you give a woman, she grows manifold. We’re better borrowers than men.”

Fursa Leo was a great run, and after a well-deserved sabbatical, Ibada co-founded Africa’s Young Entrepreneurs (AYE) in South Africa to foster the culture of enterprise and innovation amongst her people. “It is the largest entrepreneurship network in Africa, with six million members across 20 countries.

Our programmes identify and fuel innovative business ideas across villages, towns and cities that will eventually drive Africa forward.”

Currently, she is dedicating her efforts to Hydroponics for Africa, an organisation with a mission to avert a food security crisis in the future. The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation’s conference brought her to Bahrain as an entrepreneur and development stakeholder to take AYE and her involvement in hydroponics further through exchanging information and technology.

Asked her mantra for success, she says: “Some say that my belief in the human capacity is exaggerated. There’s a businessman, an innovator, a thinker and a developer in all of us. What distinguishes the successful from the unsuccessful is consistency, and that is what drives me. It's about taking that first step and then persisting till you get what you want. Even the river forges its own way through rocks. If you are disciplined enough to be consistent, then you’re going to get it done, and get it right.” g www.womanthismonth.com

nspired by childhood charity initiatives, Alana McConalogue hopes to bring the spirit of Christmas to some of the island’s poorest residents with a Shoebox Appeal of her own.

She says: “I always took part in the children’s Shoebox Appeal in Ireland when I was growing up. That's actually what I was looking to do again – to donate a box for a child through a similar initiative here in Bahrain. I couldn't find one and any I read about had passed the deadline. I wanted to do something, no matter how small, to make someone else's day a bit brighter, especially at this time of year.

“I don't know how, but the migrant workers came into my head first and I'm sure most

will agree, they work hard and deserve to be recognised so let’s hope we can get plenty of shoeboxes and shoes donated.”

She is urging people to fill boxes with shoes, both new or used in good condition, as well as toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, wipes, shower gel, razors, shaving gel, hand sanitisers and mini shampoos. New socks, gloves and hats are also welcome, but no other clothes, plus non-perishable food items, sweet treats and small gifts such as notebooks and pens or small games.

They will be distributed through the Saturday Biryani Party which visits labour

camps, providing hot meals for migrant workers. Alana says: “All shoeboxes are going to the migrant workers this year and I plan to change it each year so, for example, next year maybe we can aim it towards children in orphanages.

“The Saturday Biryani Party already does a fantastic job every week at providing food and drinks to the workers, so this will be like an added bonus to the workers – a little Christmas gift if you like! How to wear it: Wavy ends are the perfect style for a square face especially from the ears down, which helps obscure any harshness in the jaw line. Use a large round brush to smooth hair, then spritz on a wave spray to fix into place.

Drink plenty of water to stop your lips from dehydrating and exfoliate every day. Many top brands carry lip exfoliators and organic products that are gentle on your kisser. You can also use a soft toothbrush or gentle scrubs – make your own by mixing sugar with some olive oil and honey.

MAKE IT MATTE-R Bold matte lipstick is perfect for when you’re rushing out the door and don’t have time for elaborate make-up. It’s quick to apply, works best with minimal make-up and can make any face pop.

Step 1: Exfoliate. Dry lips are not great contenders for matte lipsticks, so scrub up before you do anything else.

Step 2: Moisturise. Apply your favourite clear lip balm to soften your lips. This will help avoid that caked-on look.

Step 3: Create a blank canvas. Apply a concealer all over the lips to bring out the true shade of your lippie.

Step 4: Use a lip-liner. Trace the outside of your lips and fill them in. This will give your lipstick a base to stick on to and stay on longer. Make sure the liner is the same shade as your lippie.

Step 5: Get definition. Use a lip brush to fill the edges and the bullet of the lipstick for the middle of your lips. Draw a small ‘X’ on the upper lip line to define your cupid’s bow.

Step 6: Glam it. Finish off with a dab of highlighter to the middle of the bottom lip for a fuller effect. Gold tones work best for reds and nudes, and silver for pinks and purples.

Top Tip: For a long-lasting colour – apply lipstick, blot with tissue and reapply.

GLOSS IT UP Gloss sticks give your lips a dewy effect and look uber luscious. They are a bit more forgiving than their bold counterparts but it’s a slippery slope if not applied properly. Prep your lips the same way you would for a matte

product. However, follow these simple rules for the perfect shine.

Pick the right kind. Whether you like sheer brights or dark glosses, remember, thicker formulas are great for high-intensity shine and last longer but are for looks only, and not kissable!

Choose the right colour. Red looks fantastic in gloss, and nude shades work best for a natural look. For those with fine lines, use a light shade that’s close to your skin tone, so even when it runs it’s not too obvious.

Don’t rub your lips together, it will push your gloss more to the outer edges and look unfinished.

Keep your lippie off your teeth by putting your index finger in your mouth and slowly pulling it out – the excess lipstick will be on your finger rather than your teeth.

Due to the sheer nature of glosses, you need to protect your skin; so apply a little sunscreen before putting the product on.

Top Tip: Pair glossy lips with glossy hair but don’t overdo either!

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND This luxurious pampering treatment is everything you could ask for in a facial and more, says Apple Sharma.

I

f you’re a regular reader of our publications, then you might remember my earlier review of Dessange Paris Bahrain’s 111 SKIN Y Theorem Reparative Facial.

This time, I’ve given the 111 SKIN Celestial Black Diamond Facial a try. Meant for a more mature skin (as it targets age spots), it’s also great for those with a dry, dull and dehydrated complexion.

If the experience of my last visit was anything to go by, I was most definitely looking forward to this one.

I was greeted by the lovely Nan, senior therapist, who I remembered from one of my earlier visits. After a quick consultation about my lifestyle and skincare regime, I found out that I would also be treated to an additional neck and décolleté treatment.

Nan started with the cleansing procedure using Lift Off Purifying Cleanser, working it over my entire face and neck. After wiping with hot towels, she repeated the procedure using Lift Off Exfoliating Cleanser, leaving it on for a few minutes. Meanwhile, she applied the cleanser to the back of my hands. Once my face was wiped clean, she applied Daily Orbit Energising Essence, which has a rejuvenating formula that balances the skin and provides instant hydration. I could feel my

skin starting to breath underneath this refreshing product. After blotting my face dry with a muslin cloth, she moved her attention back to my hands, wiping and drying them, and spreading a small amount of Celestial Black Diamond Serum, to let them soak in all the goodness.

Now it was time for my favourite part of the facial – the massage.

Nan dabbed a little Celestial Black Diamond Contour Cream around my eyes, nasal labia and upper lip.

Using a massaging ball applicator, she worked the areas in small circular and rubbing

movements, including between the eyes and along the jawline.

The pampering had only begun, as she then mixed together Celestial Black Diamond Serum and Celestial Black Diamond Cream, gently spreading it over my face, neck, mid back and shoulders.

Nan then started what’s called the Platysma Lift. Platysma is a broad sheet of muscle that rises from the chest and shoulders, over the collarbone and upwards in a slanting manner along the sides of the neck. I had never experienced this before – it was done so expertly that my muscles were playing to the tunes of Nan’s hands. With every circular twist and whipping motion under the neck and along the jawline, I could feel my face completely relaxing, to the point that I must have drifted off and dreamed of butterflies, for when

I woke, it was to Nan’s fingers gently fluttering my cheeks. This relaxing procedure continued as she massaged down and around the shoulders and up the back of my neck.

Once my skin had soaked up all the products, it was time for the face and eye mask. Nan applied Celestial Black Diamond Bio Cellulose Eye Mask under each eye and the Bio Cellulose Facial Treatment Mask to cover and mould my face. While we waited for the masks to take effect, I was given a dry head massage as well as a hand and arm massage with Celestial Black Diamond Cream.

After about 20 minutes, Nan delicately peeled off the masks and rubbed the residue into the skin until it was completely absorbed.

I was then treated to additional boosters – a small amount of Celestial Black Diamond Contour Eye Gel and Black Diamond Eye Cream around the eyes, gently massaged, finishing off with the Celestial Black Diamond Cream to the entire face and neck.

If I thought that my earlier treatment was one of the best facials I’ve ever had, I thought wrong, because this one delivered so much more. I was most certainly glowing, not just because of the visibly stunning results on my face, but because I was feeling genuinely revitalised and like a million dollars!

It boasts the only open MRI in Bahrain. Dr Hussain Meer, who is the general manager of Al Hakeem Radiology Center, also heads the radiology department as a consultant at Middle East Hospital. He says: “Our MRI

machine in a fast and advanced one, and is most unique, as it is an open MRI.” The examination is known to trigger claustrophobia and anxiety in patients due to the need to lie very still in a circular tube that completely encases the individual for a period of time. As opposed to this, an open MRI machine is a large ring through which the patient passes; the sides of the machine remain ‘open’, greatly reducing discomfort.

“The imaging takes place fast; about 15 minutes only for each study. There are no annoying sounds which are common in other machines. This new version of the open MRI is very efficient for spine and brain imaging,” says Dr Meer.

Another restriction with conventional MRI machines is that any foreign objects in the body, such as implants, can interfere with the imaging. “With the open MRI, this is greatly reduced, resulting in reduced image destruction,” says Dr Meer.

Facial ageing is more of a muscle phenomenon, rather than just a skin problem. The underlying layer of ageing muscle is what makes the face look older.

Plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery consultant at BSH, Dr Salil Bharadwaj, says: “HIFU is very new in the region, and has shown a lot of promise.

One of the most popular brands of HIFU is Ultherapy or Ulthera. It is an effective facial tightening tool, particularly in the mild to moderately aged patient.

“Although the treatment is non-invasive and results cannot be compared to those of a surgical facelift, it has an effect that is beyond just skin deep. Unlike earlier treatments, this machine allows you to go deeper into the muscle.

“Modern strategies include replacing the volume that has been lost due to fat atrophy, as well as tightening the deeper musculature in an anatomically correct direction. Unlike before, where we would stretch it backwards, now it is the upward direction which is important, to defy the effects of gravity and other factors of ageing.”

The immediate effects of the HIFU machine further improve over the course of two to three months. It is recognised for its efficacy and also for being natural and easily tolerated. The procedure takes all of 20 minutes and a topical anaesthetic is applied to the face to make it a painfree procedure. “It is recommended to be done once a year. Sporting Matters American Mission Hospital’s (AMH's) new centre set to open in Riffa come January 2018 will be the largest satellite clinic under its umbrella. Dr George Cheriyan, CEO and chief medical officer of AMH, says: “It will be unique because of its state-of-the-art rehabilitation and physiotherapy facilities, including the largest hydrotherapy pool on the island.”

He informs us that a dedicated sports medicine clinic is going to be run here by one of the most famous sports medicine doctors from Italy, Dr Paolo Villigio. He is the personal physician of Lewis Hamilton of Formula One’s Mercedes team.

“One aspect of sports medicine is assessment of potential athletes. Young aspirants are evaluated for their physical and psychological characteristics to gauge their ability to compete at international levels. Another aspect is preventive measures taken for established athletes who are already performing in highpressure environments. Sports doctors work to optimise their fitness, both physically and emotionally, so as to enable them to avoid injury and compete for as long as possible.

“Timely and appropriate treatment of injury is the third aspect of this specialised field. The centre will have niche experts, whose knowledge and skill surpasses that of regular physicians or orthopaedic surgeons,” he states.

“In addition to a fully fledged clinic, AMH Riffa will also have a wellness centre that tackles obesity, diabetes or prediabetes with advice from a dietician and prescribed workouts with trainers on site, as well as water aerobics when necessary.

This makes it a one-stop healthcare centre that is easily accessible by all,” says Dr Cheriyan.

Traditional physiotherapy and rehabilitation will also be available for patients of all ages, cutting down the wait they endure for their treatment at other hospitals in Bahrain.

A TASTE OF MEXICO

Liz O’Reilly discovers a trip to this traditional-style eatery is a treat for all the senses.

A

rriving at Margarita Mexicana in the Gulf Hotel you’re greeted by the sound of the two-girl house band playing traditional South American rhythms, including smoky saxophone. The atmosphere is distinctly one of festivity, with sombreros, native tapestries and pottery decorations.

Our starter was never in doubt; who can pass up the chance to have your guacamole made fresh at the table by chef Chrisanto who approached wheeling a trolley of goodies to add to the dip? We went for spicy with onions, tomatoes, cilantro and chilli and watched as he expertly tipped the golden yellow-green flesh from the avocados and mashed it to a creamy consistency in a heavy stone pot… perfection.

We also chose ceviche; plump juicy prawns marinated with lime juice, chilli serrano, onions, cilantro and cucumber, served with tostadas. This dish is an acquired taste since the lime and chilli mix can be quite fiery but if, like me, you’re partial to a piquant mix of spicy flavours, it’s the ideal starter to make sure you’ve got room for dessert. I’ve tried this elsewhere made with cod or other white fish,

which cooks in the marinade, and I have to say the prawn version gets my vote as a more flavourful option.

For main course, my dining companion opted for Pescado Tikin-xic – hammour fillet marinated in axiote adobo with bell pepper, pico de gallo and Mexican rice. This dish was a sight to behold, a riot of bright clashing colours to tempt the palate and the eyes. The fish proved tender and juicy, the marinade adding a subtle taste without overpowering the meaty texture. And the rice and peppers could have been a meal alone; the portion was generous and the combination of flavours gave an interesting and satisfying accompaniment.

My Carnitas de Cerdo both looked and tasted divine. Cubes of meat fried with onions and coriander accompanied by salsa pasilla and salsa verde. The meat was melt-in-the-mouth tender and the smokiness of the pasilla peppers perfectly complemented the onions and coriander to render this dish super tasty.

It’s served with corn tortillas but I opted to leave those aside and, should I order this again, I would probably ask for a salad as the

meat really doesn’t need wrapping.

For dessert, since I’d carefully been saving space, I decided to try the traditional Mexican Tres Leches, a deliciously light sponge cake soaked in three types of milk with a touch of vanilla. It comes covered in whipping cream, which resembled meringue, and was a truly perfect end to a delightfully tasty meal – but beware, it’s big enough for two but you might be tempted to eat it all by yourself!

My dining companion decided not to order dessert as she had been sampling the avocado milkshake. I must admit, it doesn’t sound overly appetising and she is a braver woman than I. She absolutely loved it and even ordered a second portion, declaring it deliciously smooth and totally filling.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Good music, friendly knowledgeable staff, who were attentive without hovering, and excellent food. Margarite Mexicana is highly recommended.

CHEF’S SPECIAL Get ready to create a seasonal favourite.

GUGELHUPF Gugelhupf (or kugelhopf) is one of the most popular Austrian desserts, and a classic for afternoon teas and Sunday breakfasts, at home or in Vienna’s coffee houses.

Essentially, gugelhupf is a yeast or sponge cake baked in a peculiar highcreased cake tin with a tube in the middle, and served with sugar sprinkled on top. Its fine taste comes from chopped dried orange peels used in the dough.

Varieties include adding raisins or creating a marble cake by blending dark dough with chocolate along with the original light dough.

Born in Germany, chef Holger has been executive chef at Swiss-Belhotel Seef Bahrain since March 2014.

He started his career in Germany and worked in Switzerland and Portugal before moving to Saudi Arabia in 2000 as executive sous chef at the Sheraton Hotel and Villas Jeddah. He later joined Kempinski in St Petersburg, Russia, and was part of the group’s opening team for properties in Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia and Bulgaria before returning to the Middle East to offer a new and audacious culinary experience to the guests of SwissBelhotel Seef Bahrain.

Chef Holger holds a Kitchen Master Craft Degree from the Hotel College Rotenberg, Germany and his worldwide experience has given him a good knowledge of French, Italian, Mediterranean, Asian and Oriental cuisines, with his favourites being Mediterranean and seafood.

He says: “I was first inspired by my father in my childhood as he was usually the one cooking for the whole family. At the beginning I was only watching him because I was intrigued and later I ended up helping

him to prepare the meals. My mother was great at baking; she gave me some of her cake recipes and I treasure them, they represent so many memories.”

Of his love of cooking, he adds: “It is fascinating to work with fresh products and I can use my imagination to create dishes.

There is no bigger appreciation than to see a happy guest, friend or relative enjoying one of the dishes I have prepared.”

METHOD • Whisk the soft butter with the icing sugar until frothy.

• Whisk the egg whites and blend with the butter-sugar mixture.

• Add the egg yolks, the vanilla sugar, the crystalised sugar, the flour, the lemon peel and raisins and mix well.

• Pre-heat the oven to 180° Celsius.

• Coat the cake tin with butter and flour.

• Put the dough into the tin and bake for approximately one hour.

• Let the cake cool in the tin before turning it out. This is important, otherwise you risk leaving part of the cake behind. Be patient, this can take up to another hour.

• If the surface is very uneven, cut it straight using a knife.

• Sprinkle with icing sugar, using a small sieve or tea strainer.

nhaling the fresh mountain air, laden with the scent of meadow flowers that has drifted up on the breeze as it caresses the mountainside, I feel I can almost touch the sky or at least hold Bassenthwaite Lake in the palm of my hand. Feeling safe and whole, I have arrived at the top of Skiddaw mountain in England’s Lake District.

In that moment, whilst atop the pedestal having a memorable picture taken, I felt completely immersed in the landscape, the vast open sky and the valleys below – at peace with myself and the world.

Reaching the top of this mountain was most definitely the highlight of our midsummer escape from the gruelling heat of Bahrain. Trekking up was a long adventure, meeting like-minded people along the way; climbing, mountain biking or just casually walking. The sight of the summit captivated me throughout the climb and the ascent of the foot hills provided reassurance and bolstered my confidence. Do you know that feeling?

A wonderful picnic lunch, midway, provided an alfresco dining experience in a heavenly restaurant with homemade delights. It really couldn’t get much better.

A myriad of curving paths spread out before us, tumbling over rocks and boulders, but we kept our focus on the summit of Skiddaw, feeling connected and drawn to it. The last 200 metres appeared

rather steep, so we took a short break in order to tackle it full of energy and further enjoy the experience.

However, it turned out much harder than we had anticipated.

Each step became slower as our minds shrugged off the ache in our limbs, knowing that our goal was within reach. What a wonderful feeling standing on the summit of the mountain, seeing the lake, by which we were staying, and feeling so free!

The Lake District is a paradise for active people.

Running around the lakes in the morning, air crisp with a veil of fog touching the fields, swirling

above the rivers and floating above the lakes. Cycling through the forests and up the mountains can carry you away for hours!

Swimming in the fresh-water lakes and admiring the scenery will inspire anyone to try a little sketching. Rowing on the lakes can be relaxing and therapeutic and, for those adrenaline junkies, there’s bungee jumping and paragliding. You can also feel literally on the edge by cycling down the mountains or, simply, enjoy the fabulous scenery with a round of golf.

Kids will love the Go Ape experience; it's two to three hours of exhilarating outdoor activity moving through the forest canopy with suspended obstacles, Tarzan swings and breathtaking zip lines.

There is something for everyone along with a variety of restaurants and shops around the lakes.

You may even recognise some of the locations from films you have seen, such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens some of which was filmed here.

The suspension of the new BMW M3 CS largely mirrors that of the M3 with Competition Package. The links and wheel carriers at both the front and rear axles are made from forged aluminium and are therefore extremely light.

The M3 CS is fitted as standard with Adaptive M suspension, the geometry of which has been tuned to deliver optimised performance on both the road and track. Ensuring the best possible grip in all driving conditions are the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system – which includes M Dynamic Mode – and the Active M Differential. The control systems have been modified to suit the dynamic requirements of the M3 CS, as has the set-up of the electromechanical steering. The driver has the option of adjusting the steering and suspension settings to their personal preferences or the demands of the road. The special edition’s light-alloy wheels are very much at home on the race track, with their Michelin Pilot Sport

Cup 2 tyres. The model can also be ordered with Michelin Sport road tyres.

Moving inside, the generous use of two-tone full leather in Silverstone/Black and Alcantara creates a compelling ambience brimming with sporting allure and undeniable class.

Among the standard features on board are automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon surround sound system and the navigation system Professional. True to form, the BMW designers have given the new M3 CS looks that reflect the car’s sporting intent. The signature feature of its prominent front end, complete with cutting-edge twin LED headlights, is the front apron with large, three-section air intakes. The Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid has been newly designed specifically for the new M3 CS, and teams up with the front splitter and the rear diffuser to help minimise dynamic lift. These components are made from the lightweight and extremely rigid high-tech material carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, as are the bonnet and roof.

Orders for the new BMW M3 CS can be placed from January 2018. The special-edition model – which will be limited to a run of approximately 1,200 units due to production factors – will be built from March 2018.

"Hurry Up, Will You?"

Chanelmama blogger Ouiam Charkani El Hassani urges us to stop and smell the roses.

T

he other day my son and I got this really cool book from the library, called My Grandfather and I. We couldn’t wait to start reading, expecting it to be filled with wild adventures of a little boy and his grandfather. Little did we know that this book was going to be a lesson for me more than anyone else.

In the book, the little boy complains about how everyone in his family pushes him to hurry!

“Hurry and eat your breakfast,” “hurry and put on your shoes,” “hurry let’s get in the car,” and the list goes on, on and on. The only person with whom the boy in our story didn’t feel rushed was his grandfather. With his grandfather, they always found time to stop and look, to stop and talk, to stop and touch.

While reading the book, every time the mother, father, brother or sister said the word “hurry”, I cringed! It was all so painfully true.

A crime we are all guilty of, at least once a day.

Children have no agendas, no desire to check off things from their to-do lists. Their thoughts and actions are not controlled by electronic notifications, ringtones and jam-packed planners. They don’t have that need to be on time for every single activity, which they haven’t planned to start with.

Aren’t we all too familiar with the scenarios where as you need to leave the house, your child

decides to change their shirt or get their other hat because the one they have isn’t good enough or blue enough or not ugly enough?

Or when you’re already running late and trying to get them in the car and your child insists that the stuffed animal must be buckled in too; and takes their sweet time doing it? Or when at the grocery store, they decide to check every single item on the shelves, asking tons of questions about each product and expecting a clear, eloquent answer? Or when you have a full agenda for the day starting at 6am, yet they want to make pancakes themselves; which involves lots of gentle stirring, egg cracking in different directions and milk spilling everywhere but in the designated bowl!

Your blood pressure may have reached the roof by now, just reading these sentences!

We all know the struggle, we all know how many times we have to shout “Hurry up” for them to finally pick themselves up and follow, if they ever do! We all know the way-too-familiar sentence: “We don’t have time for this now.”

Children have no agendas, no desire to check off things from their to-do lists. Their thoughts and actions are not controlled by electronic notifications, ringtones and jampacked planners Yes, I see that grin starting at the corner of your mouth, you know we all do it, yeah? But let me ask you, if now we don’t have time to roll on the floor, stop to smell the roses, check the shadows, make a little mess here and there, then when will we ever? When they are 20 and off to start their own lives?

When they leave your nest and you are staring at a spotless clean kitchen, bedroom and bathroom?

When they no longer have the excuse of their tender age to be

silly, messy and carefree?

If now is not a good time to live the now, then when will we ever do it? We think of time as ours but aren’t we forgetting that they also own their time, just like we do?

Maybe we need to stop every time the ugly “hurry up” is about to erupt from our mouths, and think of the damage our hurried up existence is doing to those lifeloving spirits. Maybe we should stop having tunnel vision – only looking ahead to what’s next on the agenda. Maybe we should reconsider the idea that anything that cannot be checked off the list is a waste of time. Maybe we should wake up earlier, leave home 10 minutes before we actually think we should, maybe we should take smaller steps and longer breaths.

Maybe we need to tuck the phones, laptops and distractions away, and banish the word hurry from our vocabulary. Maybe we should cancel more activities and sit still for a while.

What if we let our kids set the pace of our days, for a change?
