EDITOR’S NOTE

W

e're feeling hot, hot, hot. I'm sure it won't come as news to anyone that we're living through one of the hottest summers on record, so it feels a bit strange seeing all the autumn-winter fashions dropping into my inbox. However, it's a nice reminder that the cooler weather's not far away, so check out this month's fashion trend for a taste of what's to come. Our big feature this month takes a look at the world of beauty and, I must admit, some of the treatments unearthed by writer Puja Tiwari came as a shock even to me - fancy having your skin shaved anyone? No, me neither, but that's not to say I wouldn't try it if someone could guarantee to remove the wrinkles along with the shorn dermis! Our interview section this month includes an exclusive chat with singing sensation Hala al Turk - remember her as the sweet little girl with the big voice on Arabs Got Talent? Well, as you can see from our cover, she's all grown up and has plenty to say for herself. We also spoke to blogger Roshini Daswani, whose luxury lifestyle has left me feeling more than a little envious, and DJ Katrin Love, co-founder of the Bahrain Underground Music Movement. In travel Anastasia Ageeva takes us on an athletic journey through southern Italy, which sounds gorgeous but rather tiring, and, with the kids back at school, we take a look at some fabulous 'adult' destinations to consider if you're planning a late summer break Bora Bora looks right up my street (though I'm not sure my bank manager would agree). Speaking of the new school term, we've got loads of tips to help the return to class go smoothly, from products to educational websites and non-uniform style ideas. And, of course, there's our usual round-up of news, upcoming events and your views. Plus, make sure you check out our website and social media pages for chances to win lots of great prizes throughout the month!

Your Shout I buy this magazine for two reasons - the cool giveaways in your competitions and the reading material. It is also a breath of fresh air to read about topics that pertain to women in Bahrain. Sure, I can pick up Vogue or Cosmopolitan for more saucy topics, but they won’t be able to fill me in on local issues and topics related to health, restaurants and beauty that are specific to this country. Keep up the good work. Layla

Win, Win, Win! The nose-tickling olfactory notes of pungent herbs and spices give Figment by Amouage its alluring fragrance. The preliminary spicy fireworks step aside as floral hues take charge. Top notes are Sichuan pepper, saffron and gardenia; middle notes are tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom, lily, ylang-ylang and cassia bourbon; base notes are orris, papyrus, incense and patchouli. For a chance to win a 100ml eau de parfum, worth almost BD120, keep an eye on our social media page to participate.

Just putting out some food for thought for restaurants on the island. I wish the summer was pleasant enough for us to dine on the terrace or garden areas in restaurants. Why not cover the outdoors with temporary plexiglass gazebos and install a few ACs to emulate the lovely outdoor experience? When the cool weather sets in, remove the gazebo. Basmah

Record-Breaking Ribbon As Breast Cancer Awareness month approaches, Think Pink is preparing for one of the biggest community engagement initiatives the Kingdom has ever seen #howfarforpink. Supporters will be making a world record attempt for the longest ribbon, using 20cm pieces of pink branded icheck ribbon, physically tied together by members of the community, to achieve two laps around the F1 track at Bahrain International Circuit with the aim of covering 10km! Think Pink spokeswoman Julie Sprakel says: “We have been thankful to have the support of our hosts, the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) and that of the Office of the First Deputy Prime Minister for this event. “Bahrain Breast Cancer Society: Think Pink Bahrain will

be launching its 2017 national campaign for breast cancer awareness with the support of Bahrain International Circuit chief executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa and his team. “The community challenge will be to build the largest pink chain ribbon with pieces of

ribbon tied together, to reach our goal. This would be the first national scale community initiative in the Kingdom, with both individuals and corporate entities participating together, raising awareness for breast cancer whilst also donating to Bahrain Breast Cancer Society.

Disney Princesses Girl Up The Walt Disney Company Middle East has debuted inspiring images of Jordanian schoolgirls as part of its global #dreambigprincess campaign. Renowned female photographers, including Banan Alawneh from Jordan, created inspiring images to kick-off a USD1 million fundraising effort for Girl Up the United Nations Foundation’s programme supporting adolescent girls’ leadership and empowerment. The photographic campaign is aimed at encouraging kids everywhere to dream big. Banan, who works across the Middle East and is based in Amman, Jordan, photoprofiled little girls from the Queen Rania Family and Child Center, to showcase their inspiring stories. Nineteen female photographers from fifteen countries have created a series of empowering images showcasing real-world girls and women, as part of Disney’s Dream Big, Princess initiative launched in 2016, which taps into the power of Disney Princess stories to inspire kids. Photographs will be shared on social media to help raise funds for Girl Up.

It is the team’s belief that this would heighten breast cancer awareness to another level in Bahrain and the GCC.” Supporting the drive has been the ever supportive team at MullenLowe MENA who came up with the catchy headline written with pink ribbons that are knotted together. The record attempt will take place on September 23 from 3pm and, as a variety of collaborative partnerships will be needed to help hold the ribbon to form the unbroken chain, Think Pink Bahrain is calling on societies and community groups to support this record. Parties interested in both sponsorship and or support can email registration@ thinkpinkbahrain.com stating how you would like to get involved and support. How far will you go for Pink?

A DAY IN THE LIFE As an institution that has changed the lives of hundreds of children celebrates its 30th anniversary, we take a look behind the scenes.

I

n 1987, four members of the Indian Ladies Association came up with the idea of starting a play school for special needs children and, lo and behold, Sneha was born – a name meaning love. Since then, what began as an informal group has grown into a bustling, busy and vibrant school where children with special needs are lovingly nurtured, cared for and taught. The beauty of this centre is that it is, in the true sense, a melting pot where children from different nationalities and backgrounds are accepted, completely free of cost. Staffed by qualified teachers, alongside a group of dedicated volunteers, a typical day at Sneha is an eclectic mix of activities designed to stimulate the students’ minds and bodies in order to tap their full potential and challenge their abilities. The day begins with a prayer song, followed by other motivational songs. Simple exercises, scientifically designed to stimulate the metabolism, are followed by yoga. When it’s time for study, the students are split into classes according to their learning levels, aptitude and abilities. A prescribed syllabus, specially designed to suit individual requirements, includes functional literacy and numerical, social and self-help skills as well as arts and crafts. Each day is designed in such a way that there are different activities to look forward to; there are painting days, cooking days, singing and dancing days and games days. To stimulate motor skills and sharpen brain activity, the children are regularly given quizzes and puzzles to solve using a regularly updated stock of educational toys.

12

August/September 2017

Mrs Al Wazzan at a celebratory event

A spokesman says: “At Sneha we believe that education should not be restricted to the four walls of the classroom and hence students are taken once a month on educational trips and outings. Students keenly look forward to these picnics where they get a chance to broaden their scope of learning and channel their excess energy.” Students receive vocational training and experts also train the volunteers and teachers. The youngsters are exposed to the joys of nature and the rhythm of life outside the centre. They are encouraged to explore their minds and feelings and transfer their thoughts to canvas with the paintings transformed into greetings cards. Sneha regularly holds exhibitions of the

students’ work and the sale of the paintings and greeting cards helps pay towards the upkeep of the centre. Sneha’s costs are covered entirely through fund raising activities and events and donations from both private individuals and corporate bodies, such as Intercol. Lynne Al Wazzan, the company’s charity chairperson, has been a longterm supporter and champion of the centre. In celebration of the landmark 30th anniversary, the Sneha team has a powerpacked agenda spread over the entire year. There was a fun-filled family day for students and their loved ones earlier on in the year, which was attended by Mrs Al Wazzan, and the children also marked Green Day by planting seeds in painted pots they had made themselves. After the long summer break the youngsters will then be involved in several events - the Sneha Writing Competition, Sneha Sports Day, Sneha Art Exhibition and finally the Sneha Annual Day. The essay competition is scheduled to be held in September 2017 and various schools from Bahrain will be taking part. Next in line is the drawing competition for children from special needs schools, which will be held in October. An Assisted Art Painting Exhibition is scheduled for November 3, which will showcase and sell around 80 paintings, and the festivities will culminate with the Sneha Annual Day on December 7. www.womanthismonth.com

These days many of us check the time on our phones which, let’s face it, are never far away. But, in terms of style, a phone will never match up to a beautiful, craftsman-made watch. Check out some of our favourites (Clockwise from top).

Bubble by Corum – Leaf-style hands outlined in superluminova, mother of pearl face and truly exclusive with a limited edition of just 88 pieces. Yes, we know we’re in the middle of the hottest summer in more than a hundred years but that doesn’t stop the autumn-winter collections dropping into our inboxes and it seems there’s one trend that can’t be ignored – the return of fur. From Teddy bear-style jackets to full-on yeti coats, via the subtlety of a classic collar, it’s there in all shapes and forms, colours and textures and, since the majority of the big houses long ago eschewed the use of the real thing, it’s a trend we can embrace. If you’re not travelling to cooler climes any time soon, adapt the trend with cuffs, wraps, key-rings and handbag decorations.

Dsquared2 and the Andrea Bocelli Foundation united again for “Voices Of Haiti” in which young Haitian choristers from the foundation’s music project made their European debut at the inauguration of the Fondazione Zeffirelli in Florence. The project, which debuted last year in New York, provides opportunities for disadvantaged young Haitians to enhance and

showcase their talent and the youngsters also performed for the “Teatro del Silenzio” in Bocelli’s birthplace Lajatico, Pisa. Designers Dean and Dan Caten created customised dresses and tuxedos saying: “We met these talented and passionate children for the first time last year in New York. It is such a blessing and a great pleasure to be part of this special journey again.

WOOLY WINNERS Designers Antar-Agni and Bodice announced winners of the 2017/18 international Woolmark Prize Indian Subcontinent and The Middle East regional final. The judging panel included designers and members of the fashion media as well as industry insiders with Manish Malhotra of Esquire Middle East saying: “The International Woolmark Prize is always a great experience; the judging gets tougher every year as the quality of work from designers nominated keeps getting better. “Young designers are now expressing themselves through their work in a way like never before. While womenswear winner Bodice scored high on adaptability, commercial viability and creativity of the look, menswear winner Antar-Agni created something true to his belief. We are keen to see how these designs will be received in the global market.” The event has been a stepping stone for some big name talent, including Karl Lagerfeld, and the winners will now go through to the global final which takes place early next year.

Shopping Goes Android The Luxury Closet (LC), the Middle East’s largest online luxury marketplace, has launched its first ever Android mobile app targeting the Middle East and US markets. The leading Dubai-based online fashion boutique hopes the new app, which features the company’s popular buy in instalments feature as well as access to a range of limited edition items, will bring its unique e-commerce concept to new markets in the Middle East and globally. Kunal Kapoor, CEO of The Luxury Closet, said the launch was a natural step for the company, given the success of its iOS app, which has witnessed “tremendous growth” since its launch in October last year. “Everything that can be done on web, can be done through our new Android app,” says Kapoor.

STYLE SOUNDS

In collaboration with Soulwax and Michel Gaubert, fashion brand Loewe has launched a special summer musical track Close to Paradise. To further expand on the house’s revival collection with Paula’s Ibiza Boutique and celebrate the third edition of its annual summer shop in the island’s Museu d’Art Contemporani (MACE), the track Is an infectious summer anthem that transports listeners back to the wild nights of Ibiza in the seventies and eighties. Written and produced by Soulwax and curated by prolific sound director Michel Gaubert, the eclectic, escalating tempo is narrated by four local characters, providing four unique perspectives on the island’s esoteric allure. New Designer Collabo H&M has announced its big secret: the next exclusive designer collaboration will be with Erdem, the London based must-have designer loved by celebrities and fashion insiders alike. And visionary film maker Baz Luhrmann will bring the collection to life through his unique storytelling. Erdem x H&M will be in stores in November. The designer has created a brand-new collection for women and, for the first time ever, a collection for men. Erdem believes in the power of beauty, exploring historical references and personal narratives in every piece he makes and this collection will reflect and reinterpret the design themes from some of his most celebrated collections, playing with the prints, textiles and delicate craftsmanship that have made his name.

Alongside an exhibition featuring the works of regional artists, there was a fashion show curated by Faris Al-Shehri, founder of the Jeddahbased Saudi Fashion Council which supports Saudi fashion designers and assists international designers in their bid to explore the market. He told Arab News: “It is one of my

WHITE OUT

This summer is shaping up to be the hottest on record, which means it’s the ideal time to dig out the palest shades and loosest garments for a style that’s both cool and elegant. Add pops of colour to keep the look interesting or go for all white with a bold red lip or the latest peeka-boo or unicorn hair. However you wear this look, match it with a healthy tan (fake, of course) and you can’t help but look chilled.

This is reproduced perfectly in the Clavinova range through enhanced Virtual Resonance Modelling (VRM), which reproduces the complicated interaction of both string and soundboard resonance faithfully using a virtual musical instrument (physical modelling), and makes the sound more like a real acoustic piano.

Natural Wood X (NWX) keyboards are created using unrivalled expertise and feature an escapement mechanism that reproduces the feel of an acoustic piano as it goes through the let-off and drop of the hammer when a key is played very softly. The action has been designed in such a way that the escapement is discernible only on the lightest keystrokes, similar to that of a grand piano. Yamaha’s advanced binaural sampling technology is now available on the Clavinova for the first time. It uses samples from the CFX concert grand piano – recorded with specialised microphones – to capture locational information and other nuances. Once you choose the Yamaha CFX Grand Voice and put headphones on, the binaural sampled sound is automatically ready and no additional

settings are required. Now, with or without headphones, you can fully enjoy the concert experience at home. Call 17 225-513.

Growing Up in the Spotlight Arab’s Got Talent star Hala Al Turk has grown up in the public eye, known for her colourful life both on stage and off. Now, with a new record deal and a photoshoot that shows the more mature side of her nature, she tells WTM what’s in store for the future.

When did you first start singing? I started singing at a very young age. I was maybe four years old when I discovered that I could sing and that I love singing. And when did you first perform? Was it at family events or something grander? I was around four or five years old and I remember performing for family members and realising that they really enjoyed listening to me. You’ve come a long way since Arabs Got Talent. How did it feel to hit the international stage at such a young age? I loved it from the beginning. Of course there were times I would get anxious and nervous, like anyone else would when they first try something new and in front of a lot of people, but I definitely loved it. How have you coped with growing up in the spotlight? To be honest, it came very naturally to me. I feel I was born for it. I love the feeling of entertaining people and hearing them sing along with me.

30

August/September 2017

You seem to have courted controversy a little and were, at one stage, labelled a ‘wild child’. Is that behind you now? I think people will always find ways to label me, whether I was wild or not. It’s part of human nature to label, especially when you’re in the spotlight. I don’t consider myself wild now; I’m just myself. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen reported about yourself? The craziest thing was hearing that I’m married and that my little brother is actually my son! I found that shocking! There was also a well-publicised custody battle which saw you going to live with your mother, despite petitioning the court that you would rather be with your dad. Are things all sorted out on the home front now and do you manage to maintain a relationship with both parents, particularly since your dad was so important in your early career? This specific topic is behind me now as I’ve opened a new chapter in my life. What happened, happened, and now its time to turn

a new page. I love both my parents and I always wish them well. You’ve just re-signed with Platinum. What’s in store for the future? When can we expect to see new music from you? We are working on new music, for sure, and you will be hearing from me very soon. I will leave it as a surprise and keep everyone on their toes. I can say, however, that with this new Hala chapter comes a new flavour for my music as well. Do you write or collaborate on writing any of your own music – or is this something you would like to develop? No, I don’t write my own music but I would definitely love to. Perhaps in the next few years; you never know. It is something I’ve thought about for sure because I feel I have a lot to express through my music. Are there any plans to take the ‘Hala sound’ out of the region? Yes, for sure. That’s always an option and part of the plan. It all depends on timing and which markets would love my kind of music. www.womanthismonth.com

showcase BAHRAIN COMMERCIAL FACILITIES COMPANY

ESPECIALLY FOR LADIES There’s no doubt that women, both figuratively and literally, hold the purse strings. So it comes as no surprise that this leading company is now offering a credit card just for them.

A

s part of its continuous efforts to provide the best and most innovative financial solutions, Bahrain Commercial Facilities Company has revealed its developed credit card – ‘Imtiaz for Her’. WTM met with brand managers Fatema Bastaki and Noor Al Saati to find out more. Can you start by telling us why you decided to develop a card for women? Bahrain Credit introduced its flagship Imtiaz credit card in late 2009 and, since then, we have seen our customers excited about the card and the benefits it provides. This inspired us to segment our cards based on gender needs. It is important to mention that this card has grown into a large-scale business over the years, and today we are proud to say that we have an excess of 60,000 cards and we are considered one of the top two credit card providers in the market. Our Imtiaz for Her platinum MasterCard came about after comprehensive research into women in Bahrain, including their purchasing power, habits, and empowerment. Accordingly, we have uniquely packaged the card for them in terms of its design, offers, and benefits in a way that other companies do not, which puts as in the lead when it comes to segmentation of cards based on gender.

main and supplementary credit card holders, and they will be developed and updated in a way that meets the needs and requirements of all female customers. How are you adding value to the merchants and will you add more brands to your offers? We deal with merchants as partners, that is why we personally handle the marketing and PR of all participating brands when it comes to their products and services to all our current customers, we aim to attract more customers to their shops or outlets and promote more sales. We look at these partnerships as a winwin situation for all sides, that is why we will continue to add more brands and offers on a monthly basis and cater the different needs to all women. Can you tell us more about the mobile application designed for the card? We successfully launched a specialised smartphone application – Imtiaz for Her – compatible for both iPhone and Android, which shows all the offers and discounts provided to female customers. The app will enable users to identify the offers based on their location, and will be the window for any suggestions. The company will support all merchants and partners by providing marketing support on social media, such as Instagram, @imtiazforher, and traditional media. www.womanthismonth.com

Couture Chats WTM gets candid with a talented Bahrain-based blogger who is breaking down conventions with her superb styling inspiration.

R

oshini Daswani is the founder of thatgirlposh, a blog that chronicles her journey in fashion, lifestyle and travel to inspire women around the world. “I aim to provide a daily lookbook of outfit inspirations to women who simply don’t know what to wear, how to be on trend and try new silhouettes on an affordable budget,” she says. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Roshini graduated in graphic design from Central Saint Martins in London before moving to Bahrain to be with her husband in 2015. “My early experience involves work at a media agency, but I was always a fashion enthusiast at my core. So here I am in search of a way to make my mark in this new place, but also to discover myself in a new society. Her biggest challenge in Bahrain comes in upholding her voice for her website.

34

August/September 2017

“Maintaining my style is essential for success, as is building relationships with the right brands. I don’t put anything out there that I don’t actually like or support. “So, sometimes having to politely pass on an opportunity so that I remain genuine to myself and my readers can be tricky. “A lot of people think that bloggers just receive free things all the time, but it’s actually a very curated and strategic alignment process,” she states. She created her online journal to solidify her love for styling and inspire viewers through photography, beauty and travel. “I’ve been blogging since the Xanga days, but at that time it was about my social life, “I would style myself in the latest outfits which I shopped for from America and the UK,” she says.

Whether it be styling herself for parties, weddings, anniversaries or holidays, she enjoyed the concept of going along with the theme. “When in London, I found that I wanted to capture my style on the streets of the city, with this passion and search for a creative outlet, thatgirlposh was born,” Explains Roshini. When asked about what factors influence her personal style, she says: “My style is dependent on my mood. It can be anything from chic to modern, Bohemian to rocker. It is an evolving representation of my international background.” Roshini believes that fashion is a language of its own, one that communicates without barriers. “It is more than just clothes and accessories. It’s the way we walk, the way we smile, the sparkle in our eyes and our lifestyle. I use this as a medium to connect with myself and it gives me the power to converse to the world without having to speak.” For the summer, the blogger is particularly infatuated with the off-shoulder trend. “The neckline is definitely one that I am fond of. Shoulder-baring is sensual whilst still being subtle.” Her top beauty picks include the Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighter, Mac Kinda Sexy lipstick and the Mac Pro long wear concealer For aspiring bloggers, Roshini has a few words of advice: “Stay true to yourself and work with brands that are a reflection of your personality." R

ussian DJ Katrin Love has gained recognition for her infectious, foot-tapping electronic music and is now resident at one of the island’s popular five-star venues. Her affair with sound began in her teenage years when she chose to study digital music production and the piano. “After graduating in 2006, I started helping musicians in studio recordings while simultaneously hanging out with them at bigscale events to get a feel for the industry, “I never wanted to just be stuck in a studio. With some perseverance, I started performing live later that year,” explains Katrin. After touring within Russia, she decided to showcase her talent beyond its borders. “As much as I enjoyed playing in my country, the scope there is limited. I signed up for overseas tours and began exploring the world in 2008. “I played in the UAE, Morocco, Switzerland, France, Spain, Armenia, Cyprus, India, Egypt, Oman, Belarus, Greece and Monaco, to name a few.” She first visited Bahrain in 2010 as part of a Middle East tour, and instantly fell in love with the Kingdom. “The fun-loving atmosphere and vibrant

'The pleasure of creating and playing tunes for the people around me is what inspires me the most and motivates me to fulfilling my dreams' social life had me hooked. I bagged a couple of gigs and eventually a residency with a nightclub here. I consider the island as my home now,” says Katrin. When asked about her inspiration, she says: “The pleasure of creating and playing tunes for the people around me is what inspires me the most and motivates me to fulfilling my dreams.” Being a female in a male-dominated industry requires determination and courage, but Katrin is not one to back off. “It takes a lot of guts to stand up for what you believe in and be accepted for it. But Bahrain is great because everyone is helping each other to grow and take the nightlife forward. “Sometimes people still doubt if I am cut out to do a certain job because of my gender. But this is a common misconception widespread in all professions.”

Katrin is the co-founder of the Bahrain Underground Music Movement (BUMM), a pioneer community that provides a platform for electronic music disc jockeys to showcase their tunes at various venues on a monthly basis. “The concept was created by DJ Mysterioo Arif and me to fill a gap. It is very challenging to run such a concept as local musicians hardly get any support, unlike in the West. “Surprisingly, the movement garnered significant attention as participants started to get recognised outside of the Kingdom through our projects.” For the future, Katrin is working to make BUMM an independent record label. She encourages aspiring artists to take the risk and follow their passion. “Ignore the negativity and continue doing what you love. Eventually, you will make it. Nine years ago I had to make the toughest decision of my life – to do what I love or get sucked into the daily grind of a mundane job. It took lots of hard work and sleepless nights, but I am proud of where I am and the road ahead only leads upwards,” she says. You can find Katrin at ART Rotana, Amwaj Islands. Beauty in the Spotlight Keeping up with new products, fads and technologies hitting the market can be challenging, so WTM has rounded the latest innovative services that are changing the beauty sphere. Would you try any of these?

Microneedling Microneedling involves using a handheld device to poke microscopic holes in the skin. Before you gasp in utter shock at the thought of giving your face dozens of tiny wounds, there are benefits to the process. The pinpricks stimulate your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and in the process produce collagen and elastin. It also increases the absorption of products you apply, and is known to reduce scarring and stretch marks of any kind. Joz Salon has this treatment. Dermaplaning This is a form of exfoliation that removes dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin and peachfuzz using a small, sterile blade while holding the skin taut, swiping the blade in gentle motions. The scrapes stimulate collagen production and have mild anti-ageing benefits. Laser Tattoo Removal Giving new purpose to technology that has been around for years, tattooremoval lasers are now being used to treat hyper-pigmentation. It can reduce sun spots and discoloration purging your skin in a few sittings.

Microblading If you're ready to throw out all of your brow gels, powders and pencils, microblading may be the semi-permanent solution for you. This technique creates the appearance of fuller brows by depositing pigment under the skin, taking away the need to fill in the brows daily by adding ink that looks just like hair. It last for about a year. Ingestible Concoctions People around the world are starting to realise that proper diet and great skin are directly related and beauty comes from the inside out. Several products on the market claim to have the necessary antioxidants, collagen and enzymes needed for glowing skin, and are enjoying plenty of fame for quick and easy results.

Probiotic creams Friendly bacteria aren’t just great for your insides - they’re a huge trend in skincare this year too. Just as they strengthen your gut lining, probiotics also strengthen your skin barrier and help calm inflammation and increase the good flora in your dermis. Neck Lift Plastic and cosmetic surgery to tuck loose skin around the neck can add years of youthfulness to your face, not to mention the boost in selfesteem. American Mission and Bahrain Specialist Hospital have a repertoire of expert surgeons to aid with all kinds of beauty procedures. www.womanthismonth.com

Design-wise, you might rock balayage highlights or opt for a root-totip colour melt blend. Prior consultations are required for proper results Joz Salon, Dessange Paris Bahrain and Toni & Guy salon offer this service. No-heat beach waves If you hate the idea of having to use a hair dryer, this technique is definitely going to save you some major time and effort. Just twist your hair in a bun with some styling cream and sleep with it. Untie it in the morning and enjoy seductively wavy hair all day. Holographic makeup The rainbow metallic craze is gaining popularity and make-up is becoming whimsical with it. Embellished braid Festooning your braid with mini metal cuffs, winding silver chains or little trinkets lets you accessorise your hair, giving it a Bohemian feel.

Rainbow highlighter Apply five shiny pastel colours to your cheek for a mystical touch to your everyday makeup. Unconventional, but dazzling in its own way.

Dark matte eyes Instead of doing a fullface feature, just choose one feature to emphasise. Use dark colours like ebony, deep purple and brown with a matte finish for an alluring day-to-night look.

Beauty Talks Successful businesswoman and entrepreneur, Nawal Joz, gives an insight into running a beauty empire. Please tell us a little about yourself – what is your background and how long have you been with Joz Salon & Spa? I’m the managing director of Joz Group and I’ve been with the company for the past 10 years. I have 15 years of experience as an organisational developer, businesswoman, coach, consultant and trainer. I completed my MBA with Summa Cum Laude Honors from NYIT New York and my core responsibilities have been in profit maximisation, quality control, lean management, company growth and development.

one more branch for Joz men’s salon in Juffair, which has been operational since June. We’ve also renovated our Top Cut barber’s shop in Hamala, which is now fully operational with additional services for nails and body. Furthermore, we’re working on adding mobile spa services to our menu and we hope to start it on a trial basis by this quarter end. What is your business philosophy and what makes it so successful? To do something important! As a business endeavour, I’ve always believed to make the world a better place, even if your world is only local and your idea helps a relatively small number of people or organisations. Put forward a vision, a mission, a passion that you, your employees, suppliers, business partners, customers and everyone, can really rally around.

What made you go into the salon business and why? Today, making the best of yourself is a requirement, professionally. You need to be able to rival Kim Kardashian on the red carpet – big hair, perfect skin and nails, and flawlessly applied make-up. Being an entrepreneur runs in my blood. This business is not only my passion but it also helps me take care of my social responsibility of fulfilling all the community needs. What products and services does Joz offer? How many branches do you have in Bahrain? We have a total of seven branches: four for Joz Salon & Spa; two for our men’s brand Top Cut, all of which provide services for nails, skin, hair, body and barber; and one for TONI&GUY – hairdressing only. What is Joz’s unique selling point – what makes it standout from the competition? One of our favourite unique selling points is respect for our customers. I’ve instructed my staff to treat clients like they were guests in my own home. It reflects the gratitude that transcends

And what makes us different from others is that we always strive to be the leader in our

business. We believe in real innovation, whether it’s in products, services or a business model; we as a pioneer in the beauty industry are constantly re-inventing the market. What is your aim for this year? Are there plans of expansion, in terms of services or branches? Definitely our aim for expansion has been drastic and I’m working very passionately with my team. As a result, we have already added

What advice would you give to young, women entrepreneurs in Bahrain? Grow your business. Focus and execute. Get out of bed every day, get to work and make progress. Do your best every day and never, ever give up. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. What are your three tips for women to look and feel their best? No matter how many birthdays you’ve had, age is just a number. What matters most is to feel and look your best. T

he need for an ideal body is a recent trend in this competitive age, thanks to the widened exposure people have to advanced technology and communication. Although numerous cultures make up the world, globalisation has made it possible for everyone to follow the latest lifestyle trends. Also, shifting mindsets about ageing have compelled people to challenge the natural changes the body goes through with time, to look far more youthful than their chronological age might dictate. The goal of cosmetic surgery is to improve a person's appearance and, thereby, selfesteem, by enhancing their looks. It can be performed on any part of the face or body. Aesthetic treatments include surgical and nonsurgical procedures that enhance and reshape the body’s structures to improve one’s appearance and poise. Healthy individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations are appropriate candidates. Plastic surgery is a personal choice and should be done for self-affirmatiom – not to meet someone else’s expectations or to try to fit into an ideal image. Because it is elective, cosmetic modifications are usually not covered by health insurance. Some of the common procedures for women are Botox, fillers for the face, breast augmentation and reduction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction for body contouring, buttock lifts and implants, vaginoplasty and fat grafting amongst others.

Men usually opt for Botox, fillers, hair transplantation, gynaecomastia excision (removal of overdeveloped breasts), liposuction, abdominoplasty and penile implants. American Mission Hospital’s (AMH’s) new plastic surgery department is dedicated to enhancing people’s physical features with the latest state-of-the-art equipment in the cosmetic medicinal field. Plastic surgeon Dr Madhusudana Naik is a skilled expert at AMH who understands that alteration to the body's ‘image’ is a means not

Having completed his MBBS from Kurnool Medical College, India, in the year 2000, he worked as civil assistant surgeon for the state government of Andhra Pradesh, serving at various hospitals and carrying out basic surgeries at the primary level. He completed his master’s in general surgery in 2010 and practised as a general and laparoscopic surgeon. His work in the field of laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgeries is prolific. His zeal to further his skills in the fine art of surgical procedures led him to pursue a super-speciality in plastic surgery, for which he studied at one of India’s biggest and oldest institutions – the prestigious Osmania Medical College. From 2012 onwards he has been involved in performing many reconstructive and cosmetic operations and has been instrumental in giving several patients immense happiness and satisfaction by remedying their physical shortcomings. RADIANCE-REVIVING CARE Apple Sharma tried and tested this popular salon’s hair products to see what makes them stand out from the pack.

E

ver wondered why it’s so difficult to have salon-perfect hair? Could it be that we are not using the right products? I’ve been colouring my hair for years now, and one of the main challenges I face is maintaining it – retouching the roots et cetera but, most importantly, keeping it healthy from the inside out. Any sort of colour or other treatments take a huge toll on your tresses; hence it’s all the more important to give extra care. I met with Dessange Paris Bahrain’s salon manager, Amie, to see what goodies she had in store for me to try. Knowing I had short, blonde hair, she chose the items perfectly to match my needs. At the risk of sounding a little bonkers, I tend to have at least two or three different shampoos on the go at the same time. And if you’re one of those people who have their bathroom trolleys overflowing with products, you’ll understand my excitement when I rushed home to add four more to my loot. Amie had given me Dessange Paris Couleur Collection Radiance Shampoo and Mask as well as one of my favourites – Natural Pigma’s Colour Optimizer Shampoo and Pigma Fix Color-Setting Mask. She explained that the items were made in Paris and exclusive to Dessange, saying: “They’re all sulphates- and paraben-free, so the customers prefer them to other products. Our clients

46

are very aware and conscious about the ingredients used.” I couldn’t wait to try them and jumped straight in the shower as soon as I reached home. For intense toning, first wash hair once with regular shampoo and towel dry it to remove excess water. Then apply the optimiser shampoo generously. The trick here is to not lather or foam it and leave it on for anything between 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the desired intensity. Then start lathering by adding a little water and rinse. Follow this with Pigma Fix mask on toweldried hair, leave for three to five minutes, rinse, et voila! My locks felt squeaky (yes, I actually heard the ‘squeak’ sound) clean and silky smooth. I used Natural Pigma Pearl, which is ideal for neutralising and toning blonde hair. It can be used as a regular shampoo to maintain colour and eliminate brassiness. Other hues include brown, copper, black, red and chestnut and each can be mixed and customised for the client. The Dessange Radiance Shampoo is ideal for fine hair that is colour-treated or highlighted, giving a lustrous, intense shade. Its rare ingredients of

black pearl, tamanu oil, anti-fading polymer and sulfate-free cleansing base derived from cotton, mean that it’s easy on the environment and your locks, keeping superb colour and luminous highlights for longer. Just apply to wet hair, gently work up a lather and rinse thoroughly. The Dessange Radiance Mask has the same ingredients with the added benefit of tara gum, which helps to moisturise and energise your tresses, leaving hair soft and shiny with a stunning shade to last until your next appointment at the salon. Of all the treatments the optimiser shampoo remains my all-time favourite and it’s one I use regularly. However, having had the chance to sample the rest of the range, my hair feels better than ever and I will certainly be going back for more and would strongly recommend you do too! SHAPE UP!

With summer in full swing, it’s time to show off your bikini body with a little help from LPG Endermologie treatment, writes Apple Sharma

H

aving given up smoking only a few months ago, for the first time in my life I’ve started to struggle with losing weight, rather than putting it on! So, I’ve been hitting the gym hard to shed those additional unwanted kilos. I was hoping the hot, sultry weather of Bahrain would come to my rescue and I might perspire the extra pounds off, but we all know that’s wishful thinking as it does little to that effect. Instead, what did land in my lap was an LPG session at Dessange Paris Bahrain, about which I was both excited and apprehensive as I prefer doing things the old-fashioned way – burning calories by exercising and eating right. At the spa, my lovely therapist, Chenda, enlightened me on the procedure – a 100 per cent non-invasive, completely natural and pain-free mechanical massage that stimulates the natural breaking down of fats to re-sculpt the figure, smooth cellulite, firm the skin and slim fat cells. After quickly signing a consent form, I was introduced to the LPG machine, which had what looked like a mini vacuum cleaner hose with a head on it. I imagined it would magically make me slimmer, get rid of cellulite and tone my body. I did, however, think it was too good to be true to achieve this in a single 35-minute session. Chenda proceeded to take my measurements, starting with my arms, chest, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. She then helped me don an endermowear – a stretch bodysuit that provides essential support for lipozoning, easy manoeuvring, optimum tissue grabs and maximum hygiene. With repeated sessions, LPG promises significant inch loss and offers different types of Lipomassage treatments including Android for upper body/ apple type; Gynoid for lower body/ pear type; and Shorty for waist, stomach, buttocks, thighs and saddle bags. Chenda suggested the latter for me and punched in the programme. Visual instructions for the massage popped up on the screen, and I could see exactly which parts she would be concentrating on. She started on my right side, moving the head in a rolling in and out action, combined with circular motions. I switched sides, and then lay on my front and back, as she continued focusing on all the hot spots. I have a very low threshold for pain and, to my relief, it didn’t hurt at all. Only in certain sensitive parts I felt the skin pull a little, which gave me a slight tingling sensation. In fact, I found the whole process fairly relaxing. Chenda explained that although this was a great procedure for toning and reducing cellulite, it was also essential to undergo the treatments alongside an exercise programme. Two to three sessions per week with a gap of one or two days are recommended for the best possible results. Most people see benefits in six to eight sittings, with optimum results after 12, combined with exercise. You can opt for a classic (which is what I tried) or an express treatment. For those interested in looking younger, there’s also Endermolift for the face, boasting anti-ageing redensification, firming and detox benefits. Call 17 713-999. www.womanthismonth.com

ALOE FRESH SKIN! People have used pure aloe vera for centuries to help get a beautiful, healthy and youthful complexion. Try this special facial and knock years off your age!

T

he Egyptians, renowned for their continuous quest for physical beauty, as epitomised by Cleopatra, used aloe vera for its moisturising qualities in their efforts to fight ageing. Today, Forever Living Products has captured the full strength of the plant and blended it into one of the best facial skin care regimes in the form of Fleur De Jouvence – a fine collection of six wonderful components. Displayed in an elegant container, with mixing spoon and application brush, each element is available separately. However, it is only through the combined use of all six that the full benefits can be enjoyed. The package, which can give about 30 facials, includes: • Exfoliating Cleanser: First step – use in the morning and evening • Rehydrating Toner: Alcohol-free and contains aloe vera – apply morning and evening • Firming Foundation Lotion: Hydrating moisturiser that helps skin retain its appearance – apply in the morning • Aloe Activator Recovering Night Crème: Use generously after cleansing, before bedtime • Facial Contour Mask Powder • Instruction booklet explaining how to use the kit. This facial regime is recommended two to three times a week to smooth, cleanse and tighten the skin while revitalising your appearance. Aloe Activator is a superb

moisturising agent and is the ideal partner that works in combination with the Mask Powder. It is also extremely effective as a cleanser and freshener. Combine equal parts (one mixing spoon) of Mask Powder and Aloe Activator in a bowl until the mixture has the consistency of lotion. Use the applicator brush to apply a thin, even film from the neck upward. Relax in a reclining

position, limiting facial movement for approximately 15 to 25 minutes. Put a moist towel on the face to soften the mask, then gently remove it and rinse with warm water. Follow with toner and your favourite cream. For additional benefits, use Forever Living’s Facial Fabrique Tissue. This revolutionary product heightens exfoliation by refining the pores and tightening the skin. Its unique layering design also helps to better absorb the many wonderful nutrients found in the brand’s aloe vera-rich moisturisers. Who should consider and use this aloe vera facial kit? Many people start to notice age-related changes on their faces, such as around the neck, mouth or under the eyes. Localised use of injectable fillers in those areas can address the issue. However, some people have concerns about the consequences and side-effects. This non-surgical facelift and firming, natural facial kit is a real solution and many are starting to consider it. Fleur De Jouvence is available at Joz Salon & Spa. Call 17 369-133, 16 031-120 or 17 756-449.

A NOSE FOR BEAUTY

Dr Salil Bharadwaj, consultant plastic surgeon, explains a popular cosmetic procedure.

asal surgery (rhinoplasty), is one of the most common forms of plastic surgery. It alters the framework of the nose, manipulating the bone, cartilage structure and the skin to improve the appearance. It can be used to change the overall appearance of the face, drawing attention away from the nose and towards the eyes, a more natural, pleasing occurrence. Rhinoplasty surgery, when performed correctly, improves the harmony of the facial features. Common defects corrected through the use of rhinoplasty surgery include, but are not limited to, a nose that is too large, too small, crooked or may contain an unwanted hump, birth defect or other deformity. If the nose has been damaged by physical trauma, the surgery may be more extensive than a mere straightening or reduction, and may involve an area wider than the nose to fully reconstruct the damage. Patients should discuss the desired outcome and how it will be achieved fully with their doctor. Remember this: rhinoplasty surgery

BSPCA Quiz Bahrain Society for the

is both a science and an art, as is any plastic surgery. Any other surgeon has to be only competent – a plastic surgeon has to be competent and have artistic talent. It is important that the final result creates a harmonious balance with the rest of your face, looks natural and is medically sound. Rhinoplasty is different from the surgical procedure used to repair a deviated septum to improve a patient’s breathing, although the two are quite often done simultaneously. The operation can be performed with or without any external incisions. Many uncomplicated rhinoplasties can be performed as day care, but more typically hospitalisation is for a day. A splint is placed around the outside of the nose for protection and is usually removed after about a week. There is typically some swelling after the procedure; however, after about a week the new nose will be completely presentable. Call 17 812-000 or email salil.bharadwaj@bsh.com.bh

To the Rescue It’s a regular day at home, work, school, playing sport or driving. But in the eventuality of a situation that endangers your own, or someone else’s, life what’s the course of action, Behnaz Sanjana ponders.

A

ccidents and medical mishaps don’t always happen to ‘other people’. Are you equipped to effectively deal with emergency situations? Founder of the First Aid Box in Bahrain, Pamela Kamal, is an authority on all things first aid. She has been a registered nurse and midwife, as well as a first aid instructor and reflexologist. She gives us pointers on how we can make a difference to someone in medical need by knowing simple techniques, and outlines why everyone should be familiar with the basics. Pamela says: “The average time it takes an ambulance to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency can be around eight minutes, but in reality, it could well be 20 minutes at a busy time of day. Quickly responding to a medical emergency can make the difference between life and death. Take, for example, someone choking on their food in a restaurant, a child pulled out of the swimming pool not breathing, a family member collapsing, unresponsive. There’s no time to refer to a first aid manual or wait for an ambulance – a blocked airway can kill in three to four minutes. Brain and organ damage can occur at any point in those four minutes. Simply knowing the right thing to do in such situations gives the patient a fighting chance.”

Road accidents are not uncommon in Bahrain, and onlookers who are willing to help fear that they may do the wrong thing, causing further injury to a casualty, or be harmed themselves. These reactions can often result in delayed aid or the quality of the treatment being compromised. Pamela gives us some basic first aid tips to keep in mind for emergencies (although

Statistics from British charity St John Ambulance, show that in the UK alone around 140,000 people die each year in situations where basic first aid could have been beneficial. she states that these are not a substitute for equipping yourself with a proper training course).

The condition, known as congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), is a deformity involving one or both feet in which the affected foot appears to have been rotated internally at the ankle. Without treatment, people with club feet often appear to walk on their ankles or on the sides of their feet. During his early life the youngster underwent multiple castings and surgeries in an attempt to correct the problem. Unfortunately the treatments were not completely successful and gradually, as he grew, the deformity became worse and in the last few years he was experiencing difficulty in walking and taking part in sporting activities. UDEP is the sudden demise of epilepsy sufferers who are otherwise healthy. Epilepsy is a brain disorder resulting in repeated seizures. It affects males and females of all races, ethnic backgrounds and ages. For reasons that are poorly understood, people with epilepsy have an increased risk of dying suddenly for no discernible reason. Studies suggest that each year approximately one case of SUDEP occurs for every 1,000 people with the condition. For some, this risk can be higher, such as those with more difficult to control seizures. Research also points to abnormal heart and respiratory function due to gene abnormalities as a contributory factor. SUDEP accounts for 10 per cent

CHEF’S SPECIAL Overseeing this resort's kitchens is a labour of love and passion.

GRILLED SALMON WITH BRAISED FENNEL, WILTED SPINACH, BUTTERNUT SQUASH PUREE AND TRUFFLE LEMON BUTTER SAUCE Ingredients • 200g salmon steak • 30ml lemon • 40g butter • 5ml truffle oil • 300g butternut squash • 40g fennel • 5g salt • 3g pepper • 20ml olive oil

W

ith a quarter century of kitchen experience under his toque, this executive chef still has the same passion for food as when he started out. A Kolkata native, chef Janardan Das is responsible for the impressive catering operations at Al Areen Palace & Spa. Before coming to Bahrain he was with Ritz-Carlton at the Sharq Village & Spa in Doha for several years and also worked at various other five-star properties and he is a senior member of the UAE Culinary Guild. On the choice of a culinary career, he says: “I have basically been a foodie since childhood. I cannot think of anything other than food! I thought cooking would always keep me smiling because that’s my passion. I believe that: ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life’.” He is not much impressed by superstar cooks saying: “Honestly, I am not inspired by any celebrity chefs, though they are very talented and professional. I am inspired by an old lady who sells tea for her living beside my house back in Kolkata. There are hardly any people who don’t stop and have a cup of tea from her. Later, I discovered it’s not the tea which makes money for her. The secret of the recipe is her attention to detail for her customers and, above all, her language and behaviour. I guess language and behaviour are

equally important as talent in our industry.” A keen gardener, chef Janardan adds: “I love to use all the fresh herbs grown in my own kitchen garden. It gives you a different pleasure when you use the herbs from your own garden. I love to use different types of oils like extra virgin olive oil, fresh mustard oil etcetera, which always enhance giving a different touch to your dish.” The recipe chef Janardan shares is not on the Al Areen menu but can be made on request.

Method • Cut the butternut squash into big chunks with the skin on. Roast it over medium heat until very tender. Let cool a little. Scoop out the flesh and discard the skin. Put the flesh in a mixer blender and make a puree. Season according to taste and set aside in a hot place. • Season the salmon with salt, pepper and lemon and grill for five to six minutes. As it becomes cooked add a little butter over the top and set aside. Braise the fennel and quickly wilt the spinach. • Put the butternut squash on the plate and place the grilled salmon over it. Arrange the braised fennel and vegetables. Garnish with baked cherry tomatoes if desired. • To make the truffle lemon butter sauce reduce lemon juice and water in a pan over a low flame. Pour in soft butter gradually and whisk until it reaches a smooth texture. Season with a dash of truffle oil. www.womanthismonth.com

showcase DELMON POULTRY

IN WITH THE NEW With hopes of appealing to a wider consumer base, this renowned poultry company has evolved with a fresh new look for one of its bestselling products.

H

aving been a pioneer in the poultry industry since the early 1980s, Delmon Poultry Company has been enjoying renewed success with the rebranding of its flagship product, ‘Farm Chicken’. The effort is part of a comprehensive six-month agenda to reintroduce the item to a new generation of buyers, through extensive outdoor, print and social media marketing campaigns. The iconic chicken brand, which has been on Bahrain’s supermarket shelves since 1982, revealed its new identity during a glittering ceremony held at Crowne Plaza Bahrain, which was attended by senior government officials, business partners, major clients and other dignitaries. There was a performance by Russian sand artist Anna Strelkova, who drew the company’s logo onto a sand board, which was magnified on a large screen for the audience to watch. Since then, the products have been enjoying growing popularity among new and younger customer demographics.

66

August/September 2017

The rebranding, which was tasked to design agency Miracle Graphics, embraces some modern elements while still retaining the more familiar aspects that have long been associated with the previous incarnation. This was done in the hope of creating a new, refreshing look that patrons can still recognise as something they have trusted over the years. The company’s general manager, Abdul Hadi Merza Jaafar, says: “When you have gained a reputation of trust over the years, customers will continue to be loyal to your brand. Farm Chicken has been providing families and businesses with the highest quality of naturally grown fowl that are raised on local and independently owned farms. "It’s a local product and is well-known throughout the Kingdom. Our new identity simply allows us to deliver the same excellence to new segments of the market.” The process to create the flagship product starts in Delmon Poultry Company’s hatchery where eggs are incubated and chicks are

nurtured. They are then distributed to around 20 local farms for raising, along with a special type of chicken feed. The chickens are then bought back from the farms for packaging and distribution, thereby offering a significant contribution to the growth of Bahrain’s economy and the livelihoods of hundreds of farm workers. The company has announced partnership agreements with Mandilicious, a Saudi-based restaurant chain which recently opened its first branch in Bahrain, and Texas Chicken, a US-based fried chicken restaurant with a branch in the Kingdom owned by Ali Bin Rajab & Sons WLL. Delmon Poultry has also teamed up with Nando’s, a South African casual diner, known for its flavoursome poultry dishes, which opened its first branch in Bahrain in 2008. Delmon Poultry currently boasts 65 per cent of the fresh chicken market share in the Kingdom. Visit: www.dawajen.bh www.womanthismonth.com

review ATIRAM PREMIER HOTEL

A TREAT FOR ALL SENSES This gem of a lounge will thrill your senses with its delectable cuisine and mesmerising setting says Puja Tiwari.

C

oda Jazz Lounge at Atiram Premier Hotel, Juffair, is undoubtedly one of the trendiest social spots in town right now. It has, in a very short while, gained an almost legendary reputation for its ambience and music. What most don’t know is that the food served here rivals that of any fine-dining eatery. The décor is swanky and lavish, with dim lighting and dark, plush seating as an ode to the classy, historical jazz bars in America. And DJ Danzel spins soulful beats till Dihann Moore & The SheGroovee band take over the stage from 9pm onwards. Coda is the brainchild of manager Damian D’Costa who took his inspiration from bistros in New York. He says: “Being true to our concept, we feature menus that are short and sweet, but strong. We only use the finest quality ingredients for each dish. “We are not a fine dining venue but the excellent, overall experience is what keeps people coming back.” The menu, a work of art in its own right, has a fine selection of starters, mains and desserts. Each item is cleverly named after a popular jazz tune. A list of sophisticated beverages with rather enticing illustrations conveys mixology as an equally important aspect of the place. Our supper started with a glass of sweet and crisp house grape. After a few suggestions from Damian and the food and beverage manager, Sandeep, we made our choices. A passion fruit and watermelon mix, a Manhattan and the signature Puka Puka cocktail were brought to the table. The presentation of each is nothing short of theatrical. Their fruity, zesty notes make the perfect counterbalance to the summer heat. Steaming pots of smoked red pepper soup with hints of onion, garlic and celery made for delicious appetisers. A bowl of classic Caesar

www.womanthismonth.com

salad with iceberg lettuce, grilled chicken, bacon bits and parmesan cheese was next. The dressing was decadent, yet light enough to leave room for more. Batter fried tempura shrimp with Cajun spices was nothing but crispy goodness, probably one of the best of its kind I’ve ever tasted. It’s also ideal as a bar snack and a separate menu for small eats such as zucchini fritters and chicken quesadilla is available to pair with drinks. I swayed to zippy melodies and let the relaxing vibes set in, and within minutes the rest of the meal was served. We had the grilled salmon, cheekily named ‘Lazy River – Pete Fountain’, consisting of fish marinated in salt, black pepper, mustard and lemon juice, with a side of jasmine rice and baby steamed vegetables. It was astoundingly flavourful and tangy. Bacon-wrapped chicken breast stuffed with dry apricot and pistachios with a chicken liver reduction sauce was the most interesting dish. The stuffing was savoury with a touch of sweetness while the meat was delectably tender.

Angus tenderloin with truffle and parmesan potato wedges is a must-try for steak lovers. The meat was perfectly seared with a melt-in-themouth consistency and the chimichuri sauce only added to the overall palatability. The feast ended with the sweetness of the indulgent chocolate mousse and blueberry cheesecake – the perfect conclusion. For those who don’t want to go à la carte, an unlimited sushi promotion runs every Monday for BD15 from 7-11pm for seafood lovers. At Coda, you can enjoy a great evening out with a full scope of entertainment and dining without burning a hole in your wallet. The impeccable service, elegant atmosphere and scintillating music will surely put this spot at the top of your list of favourites. Call 34 342-828.

Eyes focused on the views opening up as we traverse each bend of the road; stopping to take in the sights of jade green seas between the groves of olive trees on either side of the autostrada. Bellissimo! A visual boost to help us endure another epic hill climb. However, the reward of the lush vineyards and a welcoming sign – grape tasting beckons, mmmm. We gladly take this break and roll into the cosy hut of a local vintner and his warm welcome: “Bongiorno signorinas!” Feeling the warm breeze through the sanctuary, the rustle of the leaves, and having a few sips of vino rosso Italiano – its deep, fruity, playful notes brighten our spirits – we say “grazie” to the keeper. Rehydrated and socialised we head off, completely convinced "in vino veritas". It's my first time in Italy, Bari and the Apulia region. We are staying in a traditional Italian famiglia house and spa around 7km from the seafront with delightful vistas and a gorgeous garden, complete with a frog-filled terrarium. At dawn the cacophony of sounds breaks into the quiet of the estate with accelerating intensity as more amphibian voices join the chorus. We are off for a run up the Foresta Umbra in the morning, fresh oxygenated air making us dizzy and, going all the way uphill, we come across gorgeous animals in their natural habitat, exotic birds and breathtaking scenery – truly Bella Italia! A quick dip in the pool before breakfast is on the agenda for today – however, first we must rescue one of the frogs, it having made an expedition into la piscina last night, much to the excitement of the children and amusement of their parents and fellow hotel guests. Eventually the aquatic interloper is retrieved by the lifeguard and the little explorer is returned to its home to contemplate its next adventure. With dogs rushing to greet us, the smell of the farmhouse cooking wafting on the air and the sounds of chickens running around, a kind farmer exchanges greetings as he watches the day unfold, whilst leaning casually against the farmyard gate. And on the first day back, wave them off with confidence and head to the spa! August/September 2017

I love sailing and plan to get out on the water as the weather cools but I suffer dreadfully from motion sickness. I take pills, which help, but is there anything more natural I can do to help myself?

A • •

• •

These are a couple of options: • Ginger: Try chewing on ginger candies or even eating ginger cookies. Slowly sipping ginger tea or all-natural ginger soda may quell nausea. Ginger tablets or capsules, 1,000mg to 2,000mg supplement, can help and work best if taken about an hour before travelling. Cardamom: Smell and chew a couple of cardamom, this should also stop the sensation of nausea. Saffron: Add a few threads to two teaspoons of rose water and soak overnight. Then add that to mineral water and crushed ice and sugar to taste. Arabic coffee: To hit two birds with one stone as it is rich in cardamom and saffron. Acupressure wristbands: The bands such as Sea-Band motion-sickness wristbands work by applying pressure to the inside of the wrist at the Nei-Kuan point. According to Chinese medicine, acupressure can balance the flow of energy in the body, or chi, and nausea is a sign of disharmony of chi. According to a 1995 study published in the journal Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine, people who performed acupressure on their wrists reported reduced motion sickness. Use your thumb to press your inner arm three finger widths down from your wrist crease. Hold for a few minutes, until symptoms subside.

Q

My little girl recently got stung while out in the garden. Her hand swelled up and was very sore for a few days and, even now, she is still left

84

August/September 2017

with a bump. I didn’t see what got her but I’ve never seen a reaction like this before. Would you have any idea what it might have been and is there any immediate action I should take if it happens again?

A

Most insect bites and stings result in a localised itch and swelling that settles within a few days. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to insects are usually due to the black samsum ants (Pachycondyla sennaarensis) in the Gulf region. Black samsum ant reactions range from mild allergic reactions to severe anaphylactic shock. Although the ant is a scavenger in nature, it stings human beings as a defensive behaviour. It does not bite; instead, it injects venom through a stinger like fire ants and other Hymenoptera. The mechanism of the reaction to the sting of the black samsum ant is a type I IgE-mediated hypersensitivity and the diagnosis can be confirmed by skin tests and specific IgE determination. Bees usually leave their barbed sting in the skin and die. Flicking the sting out as soon as possible

(preferably within 30 seconds) will reduce the amount of venom injected. Use the edge of your fingernail, a car key or credit card. If possible try not to squeeze the venom sac, as this may increase the amount of venom injected. By contrast, wasps and ants rarely leave their sting in the skin. Cold packs and soothing creams often help for minor reactions. Oral antihistamines can be useful for treating itch. Very large and uncomfortable local reactions may sometimes need cortisone tablets to settle the swelling. Symptoms include an all over rash, swelling of tongue or throat, trouble breathing, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting or a drop in blood pressure (shock). Effective emergency treatment for anaphylaxis is available. Individuals at risk of anaphylaxis are usually advised to: Have an action plan for anaphylaxis and adrenaline autoinjector (eg EpiPen) readily available to treat anaphylaxis. Wear medical identification jewellery, which will increase the likelihood that adrenaline will be administered in an emergency. Lastly, and very importantly, seek urgent medical assistance if stung or bitten. www.womanthismonth.com

FIRST CLASS PLANS

The end of the long summer break is almost here and kids both big and little will soon be heading back to the classroom. If your youngsters wear uniform, you’ll, no doubt, already have stocked up on the necessities for the new term. A funky school bag can really help if a child is experiencing anxiety about heading back to school. Whether you go for plain and functional, superheroes, something sport inspired or a truly girlyfabulous option, make sure it’s something that fits well, is a good enough size to carry books, lunches etc and is something your child is OK with toting around. Also look for something that’s good value as there’s a strong chance you’ll be replacing it before the school year is out. www.womanthismonth.com

With growing feet, you can’t afford to compromise on fit but they don’t have to cost the earth and making sure your child has more than one pair of shoes they’re happy to spend the day in will ensure they last longer in the long run. Give them the option of having something a bit more fun alongside their regular school shoes to avoid morning arguments and demands for highly priced trainers which many schools do not encourage. When You Parent Differently

Chanelmama blogger Ouiam Charkani El Hassani on standing your mummy ground.

M

any women nowadays choose to parent differently than the way they were parented. Many new mothers feel separated and detached from the community they live in. It gets even harder when their own families and friends do not understand or perceive their parenting style, because without the support and the backing of family or friends, the challenging job of caring for our children gets a whole lot tougher. When you are constantly subject to judgement and harsh comments, because you have chosen to parent the way you think is right – with respect, dignity and love – it sometimes can make you feel lonely or can even make you doubt yourself and your inner wisdom as a mother. Most families (or even friends) tend to give their own opinions about how they think you should do things: breastfeeding or bottle feeding, to vaccinate or not to vaccinate, school or home-school, to punish or to connect and every other thing on the list. This is most definitely coming from a space of love and care, yet, as parents, this might leave us feeling uncomfortable, judged and definitely not at ease. It can make us doubt our strong instincts as parents. So many parents facing this kind of ordeal find themselves with a dilemma, between pleasing the community they live in – their own village of support and love – or parenting exactly how they see fit, even if other people, no matter how close they may be, feel they are wrong. But it doesn’t have to be this way. When you become a mother, you are the one in charge of this innocent, little human being. So your job for the first few weeks/months is to find the best way to adapt to your new role, then, from there, to figure out what works best for your family and household. This might not suit everyone else, but that shouldn’t matter, as

86

August/September 2017

long as you and your family are happy and content. While trying to ‘mother’ the way you feel right, you can also ease yourself and your parenting style into the world. Slowly yet surely you can conquer both worlds – the one where you are the person making the decisions and the one where your community and loved ones give you the space and support you need, on your own terms. First of all, you need to trust your parenting style. When we are constantly being judged for the way we parent, it is normal that we start to worry. The well-known question: “Am I good enough as a parent?” will start to arise. The first thing we should start with is to become knowledgeable. The more we know, the more confident we can be about our choices. What goes hand in hand with this is to get a new 'village'. You don’t need to ditch your family, but it is very important to look for parents who embrace the same philosophies as you, when it comes to child rearing. Talking about the things that worry you can also be very beneficial. Choose someone you trust, your partner for example, and verbalise your worries and fears. It’s a great way to feel

more comfortable and at ease and is a great source of support and love. Another thing that might help greatly is to start noticing your own automatic reactions whenever a member of the family or a friend throws in a comment not in favour of your parenting style. See what happens to you. Do you get defensive? Do you keep quiet? Do you leave the room? Do you actually listen? Sometimes we get way too defensive and we might miss a good point. If you listen, instead of jumping into a response, you might change the way you deal with the whole situation. Regular listening time can be a powerful way to shift our knee-jerk reactions and figure out new ways to respond in the face of judgement. Trying to persuade those around you to convert to your parenting style is usually pointless. Trying to prove you are right (and they are wrong) seldom works. Finding the common ground is always the best solution. Simply pointing out how much you both love your kids, how you both want the kids to do well in life, or how much you want to enjoy their company, is something that can help bridge the gap with those around you and can make everyone content and focused on what matters the most. g www.womanthismonth.com

Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month

Scorpio

Gemini Capricorn

Unusually for your sign, you have been living in a bit of a bubble and whilst that has kept you isolated from the real world, you’ve also lost touch with some of the more serious issues that impact on your life. You need to re-focus and get yourself back on track. You are at your best when operating on a practical level and though this temporary dip into the unknown has been exciting, it’s not really you.

Aquarius

Don’t let your stubbornness over a petty dispute ruin the potential for a wonderful holiday. Just because you can’t have everything your own way, it isn’t fair to allow those closest to you to suffer as well. Swallow your pride and try to get things back on track otherwise it could turn out to be a very long September. Sometimes there is more than just your own opinion to take into account.

You’ve made great strides with a business deal this month and the outlook for the next few weeks is positive. However, you need to ensure all parties involved who’ve contributed to the overall success get the recognition they deserve. If not you could have a minimutiny on your hands when it comes time to celebrate. The key to your success here will be communication. Get the right message out to the right people.

Sagittarius

Pisces

Be careful in matters of finance this month, especially if someone is pusing you to commit to a loan or some other expensive agreement. Sometimes your sign can be easily led. Before you sign anything, think through whether you can afford it. There could be a deeper issue that needs to be addressed around your general state of mind and whether you are as happy inside as you lead others to believe. www.womanthismonth.com

You can sometimes be accused of indecision, especially when it comes to relationships, and this month may bring complications because you are not prepared to commit to a partner as they expect. Unless you want to see the end of a rewarding union, be assertive! Sometimes the very best things in life are right in front of you and if you let them go, you never realise the mistake until it is too late. Of late you have been dissatisfied in life and you are becoming restless. You are on the lookout for new challenges and, for once, you may even be prepared to step out of your comfort zone to find them! Just be careful what you wish for because, on occasions, even your capable figure can bite off more than it can chew. If you have to take the risk, try to make it a calculated one.

September is traditionally when you are at your most productive. Lady luck also appears to have blessed you and if you fancy taking a gamble on a long shot around the 23rd, you could be handsomely rewarded. On the relationship front, try to keep a partner’s interest in mind when making a major decision that will impact on you both. If there’s a failing you need to address it’s your tendency to operate as though you are single! You may find yourself in quite a reflective mood and much of this could be in connection to some crossed words with a loved one that have hit home and hurt. The problem is that the truth can be painful and it might just be a case of you having to listen and trying to learn from the experience. You’re not always right and, though you might like to argue that point, you have to accept there are other opinions out there.

Aries

Taurus

Virgo

Libra

horoscopes

Your sign always needs to have something going on or you can become frustrated or bored. So if you’re thinking about home improvements, make sure you have a plan and you’re doing it for the right reasons. Don’t attempt this without a proper structure or it could all blow up in your lap! On a more positive note, you have an admirer and they will reveal themselves before month end!

Business negotiations from July will show fruit in September and you can look forward to some positive developments that will deliver for you financially. Of course nothing comes easy and you must work hard to achieve what you want but this could be the start of something significant and long term. You should already be starting to prepare a plan and if you need to engage with others on this project, then start sooner rather than later.

Cancer

Family is at the heart of everything your sign does and this month won’t be any different. Those of you with children need to consider how to better organise your time because at the moment you are allowing over-demanding teenagers to dictate your agenda and this is affecting other relationships in your life. You need to take control of your existence and ignore the manipulations put before you. You have a right to enjoy yourself too!

Leo

You have made a spur of the minute decision and now you are going to have to live with the consequences. Over-enthusiasm and lack of thought will see you delivered into a situation that will not be easy to escape. You are one of the Zodiac’s most resourceful signs but this challenge won’t be easy! On the health front you may need to check that slightly increasing waistline as recent over indulgence is starting to become a little more evident! August/September 2017
