t's hard to believe the new year is already a month old and Valentine's Day is just around the corner. If you're heading out, don't decide where to go until you've read our big Valentine's feature, we've got venue details as well as some tips on the foods you might want to sample to ensure that loving feeling. Staying home? Then treat your loved one, or maybe just yourself, with chef Nitai's gorgeous cake recipe - I may well be sharing mine with the pups this year. There're also some humorous gift ideas if you want to spoil your significant other and bring a smile to their face.

Our interviews this month were a pleasure to conduct. We featured Fran Stafford a couple of years ago, when she first launched her fashion line, so it was great to catch up with her at her new pop-up concept. Esky is a former Red House staffer, who has gone on to even greater things! And hearing about the achievements of marathon runner May has left me feeling inspired to drag out my training shoes - let's see how that works out, they've been all around the world without once coming out of my suitcase so far.

I'm also feeling inspired by Behnaz's homes pages where she shows us how to get a regal vibe even without a princely pocket.

I've just moved house and am looking forward to putting some of her tips into action.

For this month's travel, I stuck with the romantic theme to come up with some of the best places to tie the knot - I love the idea of a ceremony at New York Public Library, just need to find the prospective husband first.

As always we've got our regular round-ups of fashion and beauty news plus styling and hair tips. Passion's in our Get The Look pages with Fernanda going all-out in red and she's shared some great trends for the winter season.

What’s caught our eye in the news this month.

While one encourages women to speak up and express their thoughts in the corporate world by fearlessly wondering, questioning and imagining, the other urges them to master the art of communication and be role models in their own right to future generations of women. I really appreciated the article on emotional eating. I feel that in this fastpaced world we live in, whether we are career women or primary caregivers for our children, the stress and pressure of being our best version at all times gets the better of us. I understood the differences in ‘hunger’ and recognised my own patterns of eating out of stress. I think I can tackle my problem better, now that I know of it, and hopefully, will practise mindful eating to keep off the extra pounds.

A dress from French clothing brand Vetements is getting a lot of buzz — but not the good kind. The billowy, white, shortsleeved, crew-neck dress runs a whopping 61.5 inches long, and somewhat resembles a choir robe or a hospital gown complete with a slit in the back. It costs over $1,000. The world of hip-hop, and really, just about anyone who's been keeping score of American history, collectively gasped when some perceived racist images from H&M's new campaign surfaced on the Internet.

In this particular image, a young black boy wears a hoodie with the words "Coolest monkey in the jungle" emblazoned across the front of it. If you know about racism in the US, you already know people often referred to African Americans as primates in order to dehumanise them. With that context in mind, The Weeknd, who had aligned himself with the brand in the past, has withdrawn himself from participating in any of their operations going forward. www.xxlmag.com

February in Focus What’s on our radar this month? Well…loads!

Valentine's Ball

Stop the Bullying

Enjoy an evening of fun and dance, while helping your furry friends with the BSPCA’s Valentine's Ball. Come dressed in your finery for a great night out that includes a sumptuous buffet dinner with selected beverages, fantastic entertainment to help you dance the night away and an exciting auction. Tickets cost BD30 each and can be bought at the BSPCA Thrift Shop in Budaiya, the Animal Welfare Centre (AWC) in Askar, or at either the British or Dilmun Club receptions (cash only at the clubs). Tables are for eight people, so invite your friends to come along and help raise money for a good cause.

All proceeds will go towards the maintenance of the BSPCA AWC and care of the animals sheltered there, and towards the Catch, Neuter and Return programme.

The event takes place at the InterContinental Regency Bahrain, on February 9 at 7pm. See you there!

MOVIE NIGHT

Enjoy a wonderful evening watching one of the most popular dance forms with the screening of Tango at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art. A dangerous love affair inspires the director, Carlos Saura, to create the most spectacular and boldly seductive dance film ever made. A stunning movie, the score is dynamic, beautifully written and magnificently performed. And, of course, the dancing is incredible!

The screening will be held on February 20 at 8pm and tickets cost BD10+, which can be used as credit at the restaurant on the same evening.

In a bid to tackle a widespread issue affecting many school children, the Bahraini Youth Forum Society (BYFS) is bringing the anti-bullying issue to light with its fourth ‘Naseem Initiative’ project titled ‘When You Hurt’. The group will highlight the subject by conducting a study as well as art and awareness campaigns over the coming months.

There will be roadshows and awareness corners at selected schools, including provision of creative awareness materials that can be easily communicated to youth and used as a reference by them later on. This will also include an art competition where students will be able to create a painting about bullying, and the best artwork will receive an award. Separate awareness sessions for parents will be organised as well. All these activities will be held from February 1 to April 26.

Foodie Fun

The ever popular ‘Taste Tour’ returns again this year to take you on another trip of culinary delights. There are 40 participating restaurants, where food lovers can go around and sample dishes to vote for their favourite eateries. They’ll also have the opportunity to win a prize as part of a raffle draw.

The set menus range from BD5 to BD12. This ongoing event runs only until February 10, so hurry up and start tasting!

Indulge your passion for reading and cooking at the same time with Words Bookstore Café’s CookBook Club. This month’s choice is Crossroads by Tal Ronnen, who is reinventing plant-based eating.

At his Los Angeles restaurant, Crossroads, the menu is vegan, but there are no soybeans or bland seitan to be found. He teaches readers how to make his recipes and proves that the flavours we crave are easily replicated in dishes made without animal products.

Celebrating Artists

Every year the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition celebrates the creativity and ingenuity of the artists in the Kingdom, and this year is no different.

In its 44th edition, the art community will gather again to present their finest work, uninhibited by a subject or theme. The result is a colourful display of styles and techniques through different mediums of expression. The exhibit, which runs until March 7 from 10am-9pm at Arad Fort, presents a collection of local and international artists residing in Bahrain.

Annual Festival Returns

Get your diaries out as the popular Spring of Culture is back!. Now in its 13th year, the festival’s kickoff date coincides with Arab Tourism Day, which was adopted when Manama was the Capital of Arab Tourism in 2013 and commemorates the anniversary of the birth of the famous Arab traveller Ibn Battuta. Bahrain’s unique cultural and historic sites will form the perfect backdrop for various exciting events and activities featuring local, regional and international talents, from song and music, to theatre, art and much more. These diverse events include lectures, workshops, exhibitions, concerts and other programmes. The festival starts from February 25, kicking off with ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh’, a musical concert by Abed Azrieh, at Bahrain National Theatre at 8pm.

Tickets will be sold at Virgin Megastore.

The festival continues until April 30. More details on the event line-up to follow, so stay tuned!

Art in Focus

One for art lovers, head down to La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art, where Fereshte Shishine, an accomplished artist, will hold an exhibition titled ‘Life Journey’.

Fereshte has studied with various masters and has a degree in art from the Academy of Fine Arts in Tehran.

As a youngster, she enjoyed detailed work and, in particular, the poetry and intricacy of Persian miniatures. She later developed her skills in still life, portrait, landscape and etching.

Her paintings are easily recognised by her deep appreciation for colour composition, sharp focus on light and her unique attention to particular details. A common characteristic of most of her paintings is the accidental presence of draperies and delicately knitted fabrics somewhere on the canvas. The exhibit opens on February 1 at 6pm, followed by dinner and a jazz performance by Groove Souq at 8pm, priced at BD30+. www.womanthismonth.com

MAKING US PROUD As a journalist, I was pretty shocked when Carrie Gracie announced her resignation from the BBC as a stand against gender pay inequality. I’m in awe that she has stood up to this huge and august corporation, which really should know better. I was delighted to learn that she was actually born in Bahrain, her father having been stationed here while employed in the oil industry. It’s nice to see a “local” girl doing us proud.

I’d like to congratulate Sofitel’s director of talent and culture, Huda Mirza. We’ve featured her in the magazine before and she was lovely, so I was delighted to hear she was one of 11 Bahrainis from the private sector honoured for their professional achievements at an awards ceremony to mark National Day. She said: “I am incredibly proud and honoured to be recognised amongst such a talented and outstanding group of hardworking people.”

AN EYE FOR AN EYE I’ve been absolutely heartbroken to see images on social media of dogs being poisoned across Bahrain. Some are the poor animals that scratch out an existence on the streets, others are much-loved pets unfortunate enough to pick up a piece of tainted meat. With a large number of cases in recent weeks, there’s no doubt this is deliberate. It’s horribly cruel and really not the way to deal with the stray dog population. Whether you like dogs or not, and I do, to see an animal dying in pain is hideous and I hope action is taken immediately.

Personally, I'd poison the poisoners!

While Saudi Arabia is making headlines for its advances in women’s rights, Nepal has once again gained notoriety for the wrong reasons after a woman died from smoke inhalation having made a fire in a primitive outdoor hut where she was banished to sleep because she was menstruating. The Nepalese government is trying to stamp out the tradition of chhaupadi, which comes from an ancient Hindu belief that menstruating women are unclean.

Though the practice has been outlawed, enforcement will not begin until August which may be too late for some. The country sees deaths every year as women and girls are forced to leave their homes during freezing winter weather. I’m glad a law has been passed but it’s taking too long to implement.

MORE PRAISE FOR SAUDI Things are moving apace in the “Magic Kingdom” across the causeway. Women are now allowed to attend sporting competitions – jubilant selfies of them watching the first football match were all over social media. And, following last year’s announcement that Saudi women would be allowed to drive, they are now to get a female only car showroom.

They’re activities that we take for granted – personally, I would not want to watch a football match and have no real desire to visit a car showroom, but I wouldn’t want anyone telling me I couldn’t either. These are big strides for our Saudi sisters and deserve celebration.

CAN you believe there was a time when women were forbidden from wearing trousers? OK, there are still strange things in the world, but no trousers? The pants habit became popular in the mid-1920s (before that some girls ended up in jail just for the simple act of wearing them in public). Actresses Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn were big fans of this particular item of clothing in the 1930s and wore them all the time. The Second World War came and acceptance became mandatory for reasons such as rationing and the fact that women had to join the workforce.

A retrospective honouring the late Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa will open at the Design Museum in London in May. Alaïa, whose sudden death from heart failure rocked he world of fashion, had been working with the museum’s guest curator, Mark Wilson, on the exhibition, selecting rare pieces from his archive and providing documentation of his creative process.

The Paris-based designer was widely celebrated for his ability to cut, fit, drape and tailor in a traditional way. He was also hugely popular, with models such as Naomi Campbell paying tearful tributes at his passing.

Victoria Beckham heads to home turf to show at London Fashion Week (LFW) for the first time this September as part of celebrations to mark her brand’s 10th anniversary.

The Girl From Korem...

Film-maker and philanthropist Eskedar Girmay tells Liz O’Reilly about her role as Bahrain’s first female honorary consul.

E

thiopian Esky, as she is known, has been in Bahrain more than 20 years and, in that time, the mother of two has worked successfully in several commercial fields, but the arts and community service are her true passions.

She has long been involved with the Migrant Workers Protection Society both as a board member and hands-on volunteer. She says: “The society helps people from many countries but I work most closely with my own countrymen and women, particularly domestic workers; I can understand and relate to the situations they find themselves in and I do my best to help.”

She is also a member of the NGO (nongovernmental organisation) Mary Joy, in Ethiopia, which sponsors children, elders and other disadvantaged groups through integrated development programmes. “The founder, Sister Zebider, is one of my heroes,” says Esky. “The project focuses on Ethiopian-to-Ethiopian help rather than waiting for aid, which I think is really important.”

Tying into this, she recently produced her first film, Tikur Engeda, which deals with the sometimes difficult issue of adoption and what might go wrong when an adopted child seeks out their birth parents. But, she explains: “This was my first film as producer and I also acted in it, but I had already written my own film and became involved with this production as a way of learning about the market.

“My second film, which begins shooting in March, hopefully between Bahrain and Ethiopia, is the film I always wanted to make. It talks about the concept of migration – how it starts with your own country; people think it’s about a geographical place but it’s a lot more. I talk about love, domestic workers, family, trying to show what’s happening and how things

can change – and it’s important to note it will include Bahraini actors.”

Her interest in the welfare of her fellow Ethiopians brought her to the attention of the diplomatic community and it was suggested that she should take up the role of honorary consul representing her country in the Kingdom.

She says: “It took quite a long time for me to be officially recognised and I was told by the Esky was instrumental in bringing Dr Tedros Adhanom on an official visit to Bahrain as he sought support for his appointment as director-general of the World Health Organisation.

“Once people heard about my appointment, lots of them asked me what an honorary consul actually does. The answer, if you look online, is that you serve your country and your people — for free. I’ve been doing that half my life anyway, so it’s nice for that to be recognised.”

In this role her arts background is also important since one of her aims is to promote Ethiopian culture on the island. She says: “The honorary consul’s role is to bring our two countries together both in culture and business.

“I hope to organise an Ethiopian Week, bringing business people to Bahrain from Ethiopia and I’m also talking to the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce looking at ways to promote Ethiopian products in addition to coffee, flowers, livestock and seeds.

“I also want to promote Ethiopia as a country; now that we have a direct flight with Ethiopian Airlines I would love to see more Bahrainis visiting for tourism – it’s only a three-and-ahalf-hour flight, so it would be perfect for a weekend visit.” g www.womanthismonth.com

DIY Design Designer Fran Stafford came up with a unique pop-up concept to help introduce her styles.

She told Liz O’Reilly what’s involved.

C

anadian, Fran, will be familiar to many as the face of events such as Bab Market and Little India in Bahrain. In November 2016, she launched her own clothing label, Black Anaar, and later moved to Berlin in hopes of developing the brand.

However, missing, among other things, the desert sun, she’s now planning to split her time between Germany and Bahrain and she recently launched a new pop-up concept at More Words on the Budaiya Highway.

She explains: “Basically I have a little of the souk within the boutique – so customers can choose their “shape” based on the samples present, choose their material and then choose their embellishment details to be added on. It started with the idea for my new winter collection sweatshirts, made in my Berlin Atelier, that have cute little elements such as lace on the sleeves, to be able to be designed by the customer. I think people will really enjoy this as you can’t do that at H&M for example; also for some people venturing into Manama Souq is daunting. It also gets customers to be a bit more invested in their creations as I am trying to promote slow fashion and holding on to special pieces for years... not just weeks.”

Black Anaar pieces are distinctive, they’re flowing and, for anyone who knows the souq, the materials are familiar. Asked about the Black Anaar women, Fran says: “She has class www.womanthismonth.com

and likes to dress up, weather that means standing out or being more laid back, it always means she will have a refined taste. Even the funky, more colourful pieces have been made with love and care and the fabrics I have chosen reflect the same value in taste. That doesn't mean she can’t be more daring with the pieces if she chooses to wear them in her own unique way. Many of the designs lend themselves to being mixed and matched with either jeans and a T-shirt or a nice evening dress... it just depends on how creative the wearer is.

“Because of Germany's minimal style, many people who would love to wear these pieces on a daily basis can’t due to obvious restrictions such as having to ride a bicycle around Berlin, so they opt to buy ‘special’ pieces to be worn at summer music festivals. This has proven to be my best new market in Berlin... also the tourists from LA and Russia love the unique styles and their long flowing silhouettes. “ Fran is planning to be in the Kingdom throughout the winter and says: “I always like to do a yearly pop-up here and to be able to take part in some of the island's iconic festivals and markets. I’m really excited to take part in the Soundscapes festival!

“I hope to be able to introduce the brand to other Gulf countries and cities this winter. I’ll be travelling to Dubai and hopefully Kuwait.

Also, I’ll be back in Germany for the festival

season [the summer]. I will also be in Canada at some point with another pop-up which has yet to be booked. I’m so thankful for all the collaborations with photographers that occurred this year and for all the concept stores and boutiques that gave Black Anaar a place! Keep on Running May Alhaji, of Zain Racing, is the first Bahraini woman in her age group to qualify for both London and Boston marathons. She told WTM what keeps her on track.

daily life throws at us?

Passion is the answer. My passion for triathlon taught me to be a more organised person and ready for the ups and downs of life. Triathlon changes you in ways you cannot imagine.

You become more resilient, dedicated and organised. I won’t say it is easy. There are bad days, but when you set your eyes on the ultimate goal, you learn to pick yourself up and move on, tick off another training session and reap the rewards of the hard work.

I understand you are involved with all Zain’s race teams – what is your favourite to participate in?

The best feeling in the world is to belong to a team that supports your vision and goals. I represent Zain’s racing team in running and triathlon which involves swim, bike and run.

You are the first Bahraini woman in your age group (35 to 39) to qualify for the London and Boston marathons, will you be taking up both places and how will you train?

Yes I am the first Bahraini woman age grouper to ever qualify for Boston and London, regardless of age, and I decided to do Boston.

It is a great honour to qualify for one of the most famous and prestigious marathons in the world. Marathon training requires a minimum of three months and ideally six months.

However, due to my base training done previously for the Bahrain Ironman 70.3, all I need is three months to prepare for Boston.

How and why did you first get involved in sport?

As a child I spent most of my free time with my dad while he was working with the tennis federation to build the courts and stands. I was overwhelmed and fascinated by tennis back then and he supported that interest by buying me my first tennis racket for my 12th birthday. Before investing my time in tennis, I used to play football in the neighbourhood and my dad used to organise small tournaments and bought cups to encourage all the kids. In

2012, two years after the birth of my daughter, I switched sports to triathlon as it was very hard to organise tennis matches and I needed to workout to help with my postpartum depression that lasted a long time. And, just like that, triathlon did its magic and helped me overcome my postpartum depression.

How have you maintained your interest over the years – fitting in time for training around a demanding job (as a marketing specialist at Zain) and the other things

Do you feel the discipline of training for, what some would consider, extreme challenges helps you in other areas of your life and, if yes, how?

Of course it does. Like I mentioned previously, training for endurance sports teaches you discipline especially that you cannot reap the rewards immediately. It is a long process of ups and downs that requires patience and belief. It does not only affect me as a person but my kids too. I can see that it has taught them to want to excel and be active in different sports keeping them away from the iPAD life.

Do you have any plans to take on other sports?

At the moment no. I am pretty much enjoying what I do.

What would be your message for other women, both younger and in your age group, who want to take up distance running and competition?

It is never too late to start. I started at the age of 33 and have achieved so much; it made me grow as a person and mother. www.womanthismonth.com

ANTI-AGEING THAT REALLY WORKS Liz O’Reilly finds a skin treatment that actually “does what it says on the tin”!

W

hen someone invites me to pop in for a facial after work on a Thursday, I don’t need any extra encouragement, and the surroundings of The Gulf Spa at the Gulf Hotel are the ideal space to wind down after a busy week.

The ground floor is all about water – a Jacuzzi, pool, steam room with different scents, sauna and an experience shower (yes, you will think you’re in an Amazonian rain forest complete with sound effects) – but my journey quickly headed upstairs to the treatment rooms where lovely therapist Thiangi gave me a quick explanation of the Life Infusion Ritual.

Described as an “Unprecedented ‘youth elixir’ that provides unparalleled skin rejuvenating effects focused on the science of skin age biomarkers and specific massage techniques” – I couldn’t wait to get started. After all, my skin is somewhat mature and, frankly, needs all the help it can get!

First off, I should say that this is not just a facial; it’s a whole experience using a range of products from Spanish brand Natura Bissé, which is the Forbes Travel Guide Official Skincare Brand 2018.

Thiangi started off by spraying the room with a relaxing lavender fragrance and then performed “palm-work” body touch with lavender scented hands to relax me and render me ready to receive the treatment – I already felt as if I had died and gone to heaven.

She analysed my skin through a brightly lit magnifying glass – an essential step as she immediately spotted that I am very sensitive and would need a patch test before the peel that was to come.

My face was covered with Diamond luxury cleanser and I could feel my dry skin luxuriating in the unaccustomed richness. This was followed by a gentle toner and lavenderinfused oil, ensuring my skin was sparkly clean but at the same time hydrated.

The next step of the procedure would usually be the triple exfoliate salicylic acid treatment with carboxy powder activator – a peel that works to leave the skin looking more youthful.

However, thanks to that patch test, Thiangi realised my skin would not cope with this and instead administered a very gentle enzyme peel. This is left to sit briefly on the skin before the Diamond Life Infusion Serum is applied. This concoction uses biomagnetic nanosomes to work with your skin’s own bio markers, such as those with address stem cell preservation and cellular ageing.

This serum includes an exclusive release system through diamond micro-sponges, that fosters penetration of the formula into the skin, achieving spectacular rejuvenating results.

After the serum came magnetic vibration with wands passed across the face to improve elasticity and help restore the natural contours of areas such as the chin and jaw line. This felt a little weird but certainly not uncomfortable and, after a while, actually very relaxing.

The next step had me laughing out loud. By

this stage, I had been lying down for quite some time and, despite Thiangi providing bolsters for my lower back and knees, I was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable. Fortunately, I was able to sit up for the application of an LED chromo therapy mask, which helps the products penetrate the skin.

This mask is like a light-up rubber face glove and the laughing out loud came when I caught sight of myself in the mirror. But, amusement aside, it didn’t feel unpleasant and, undoubtedly, did its job.

The treatment finishes with another oddity – the Youth Infusion Rejuvenating Mask is slathered all over the face, including covering the mouth and eyes. It has a type of plastic content and, when set, is peeled off showing a clear imprint of every line and wrinkle – which is slightly disheartening when you have as many as me!

While waiting for the mask to set, Thiangi treated my hands and feet to a gentle massage with Diamond body cream and, at the end of the session, she applied Diamond Extreme cream to my face before handing me a mirror.

I can honestly say I was shocked. My skin really did look super-plumped and hydrated and there was a noticeable improvement in both lines and texture. The results last around two weeks and, though this treatment is by no means cheap, it’s certainly something I would consider investing in for a big night out.

GREASE FRIGHTENING! Dry shampoo is miraculous when used right. Apple Sharma gives you the low-down on how to get squeaky clean hair in no time.

any women will tell you that dry shampoo is a lifesaver – whether you’re in a rush to go out and are having a bad hair day or you’ve woken up late and don’t have time to shampoo. However, if you don’t use it correctly, it can actually make your locks look worse, leaving them dull, lifeless and greasier. Fear not, we’ve got you covered. Once you understand how to use it properly, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

APPLICATION Shampooing your hair too often can actually make it oilier. This is where dry shampoo comes to the rescue – use between washes to keep the greasiness at bay. Follow these three simple steps to get clean and voluminous hair: 1. Separate your hair and divide it into equalsized sections.

2. Shake the product well and spray at the roots of each section from a few inches away.

3. Massage the hair with your fingertips, brush and style as usual.

DO’S Do: Apply only to the top few inches of your hair – that's where it works best by absorbing all the oil. The rest of your hair is probably not as oily as your roots.

Do: Massage the product thoroughly after spraying but let it sit for about five minutes

before you work it, so it has time to soak up all the greasiness. Massaging will get rid of the white chalkiness as well as add volume and texture to your tresses.

Do: Make sure you're using the right shade of shampoo – one that matches your hair – otherwise it will just end up looking discoloured or look like you've sprayed chalk all over your head. Lots of brands are now bringing out tinted dry shampoos to suit every hair colour.

Do: Use the right hair brush. A natural bristle brush is a good option as it helps work the product and blends it from the roots to the tips.

DON’TS Don’t spray too close to the scalp. Keep it

• Use it just after washing your hair to give it more volume and texture.

• Go green and make your own. Mix ¼ cup corn starch/arrowroot powder with a few drops (4-5) of essential oil.

• Use baby powder! Rub some into your hands and work through the hair with your fingertips. approximately 25cm away from the roots. This will help the product to distribute evenly.

Don’t overdo it, or else it'll have the opposite effect and make hair look dull. Less is more in this case – start with a small amount and if the hair still feels greasy, add a bit more.

Don't use dry shampoo too often. While it's a great quick fix, it's best to use it once between washes. Using it too frequently will cause product build-up and clog the follicles, which is neither attractive nor healthy!

Don’t touch your hair. You read that right!

After a brief consultation, Joie, the assistant spa manager, explained how the procedure uses only Bahrain’s home-grown organic ‘Green Bar’ products, which have potent native ingredients.

Precious jujube, mulberry fruit, fig, pearls and myrrh are used in herbal infusions, elixirs and plant waters to nourish the complexion, leaving it looking and feeling rested.

This chemical-free treatment honours all your senses without the use of processed or synthetic elements. The bio-available nutrients in the products have a wide array of vitamins and nourishing botanical acids to brighten and smooth the skin.

Joie started by removing my make-up and used a herbal cream cleanser on my face. The aromas of hibiscus and rose wafted up and I was instantly transported to a summer garden.

Rich in acids including ascorbic acid (vitamin C), both flowers detoxify and have cooling and hydrating properties. Dietary sulfur is included to help clean and increase the efficiency of the minerals in the infusion. rose buds. Joie scrubbed my face thoroughly to detoxify and reminaralise the skin. She applied steam for a few minutes, whilst giving me a relaxing head massage, and proceeded to extract my impurities.

This was followed by a ‘hot-cold-hotcold’ treatment (literally)! She placed an ice-cold towel (infused with mint scent) on my face, followed by a hot one, and then repeated the procedure. The initial shock of the cold flannel gave me goose bumps but it felt so refreshing that I warmly welcomed it the second time.

She then used a natural plant toner – Milky Moon Tonic – a cooling blend of rose and palm water mixed with crushed pearl powder. High in amino acids and enzymes, it helps reduce redness and is wonderful for sensitive skin, like mine.

I was now ready for the face massage, for which Joie used the Face Brightening Elixir, a light and gentle skin serum, rich in ceramides (lipid molecules that hold skin cells together). High in nourishing fatty acids and antioxidants, it reverses sun damage and brightens the skin. It absorbs into

the skin easily, resulting in a dewy, hydrated complexion. This was my favourite part of the facial – it was so relaxing that I almost dozed off to the rhythm of Joie’s expert hands massaging my face and upper shoulders.

She then applied a luxurious pearl powder mask, made of pure pulverised freshwater pearls, and left it on for 10 minutes, while massaging my hands. Pearls help reduce hyperpigmentation and leave the skin with a radiant luminescent glow.

The finishing touch was a moisturising fig cream, which helps your skin strengthen itself so it can resist sun spots and pigmentation. The abundant antioxidants in raw unrefined fig oil, spring island mulberry and cacao butter work together for the skin’s defence. Desert Jojoba wax, coconut acids and hazelnut vitamin E oils have antibacterial properties, are moisturising and increase cell turnover.

This was certainly the cherry (or should I say fig) on the cake – it was light, silky and smelled heavenly!

My skin was visibly aglow and felt rejuvenated and nourished. Suitable for all skin types and completely natural, this is one facial that you could easily add to your regular skincare regime and one that is bound to perk you up.

Pulmonology specialist Dr Sonal Jagtap explains lung changes in rheumatoid arthritis.

R

heumatoid Arthritis is a disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints. There is a 50 per cent chance that it can, at the same time, involve the lungs.

The lung problems most often linked to rheumatoid arthritis include: Scarring related to long-term inflammation (interstitial lung disease) may cause shortness of breath, chronic dry cough, fatigue, weakness and loss of appetite.

Small lumps can form in the lungs (rheumatoid nodules), as well as in other parts of the body. Lung nodules usually cause no signs or symptoms, and they don't pose a risk of lung cancer. In some cases, however, a nodule can rupture.

The tissue surrounding the lungs, known as the pleura, can become inflamed. This is often accompanied by a buildup of fluid between two layers of the pleura (pleural effusion).

Sometimes this resolves on its own. A large pleural effusion, however, can cause shortness of breath. Pleural disease may also cause fever

and pain on breathing.

The joint of the throat (cricoarytenoid) may become involved, causing difficulty with inhalation and occasionally resulting in wheezing. A sore throat and hoarseness are

other common complaints.

The small air pipes of the lungs may become inflamed causing progressive breathing difficulty and a cough.

Some treatment medicines can also make symptoms worse.

These complications often indicate an untreated or not well treated condition. The best way forward is expert follow-up to assess your joint pains. Keep regular checks on any symptoms involving the lungs.

Radiological investigations including CT scan may detect the exact underlying structural lung changes. Spirometry or lung function tests can detect changes in the functional capacity of the lungs. Early changes can be treatable.

Discuss all treatment options with the physician, weighing the benefits and side effects of the medications used to treat the rheumatoid arthritis.

Ground-breaking Medical Achievement This state-of-the-art facility carried out the first spinal operation of its kind.

T

he University Medical Centre of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City, affiliate of the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), witnessed a first-of-its-kind operation in the Kingdom when orthopaedic surgeon Dr Yousif Sharaf performed spinal surgery on an 80-year-old Bahraini patient suffering from several health disorders, using local anaesthesia.

The operation, which went well, took half an hour during which a small incision measuring 5cm was made in the patient's back to remove a spinal disc herniation which was putting pressure on his nerves. The patient had suffered from severe back pain extending to his left leg and severely restricting his movement. The operation was necessary to allow

the patient to resume his normal functions and avoid the side effects of immobility which, at this

age, may lead to chest infections or clots in the foot or leg.

Dr Sharaf pointed out that the

patient was suffering from chest problems including asthma and lung inefficiency, which put his life at risk in the event of general anaesthesia.

He explained: “Based on the assessment of the patient’s general health, it was necessary to carry out the operation with local anaesthesia, despite the difficulty of this measure, since the operation site is a sensitive area of the spine surrounded by nerves, requiring the patient’s complete relaxation.

“The operation went smoothly and the spinal disc herniation was removed from the third and fourth vertebrae. The patient began to gradually walk in under 24 hours after the end of the operation.”

Quell the Flame By what we eat and how we live, we may unwittingly be fanning the fires of inflammation in the body. Behnaz Sanjana looks at this threatening condition and how to tackle it.

W

hat happens when you stub you toe against the wall or jam your finger in the door? Blood immediately rushes to the damaged spot for immune cells, hormones and available nutrients to start healing the injured area. This results in it becoming red, swollen, warm to touch and painful – what we term as ‘inflamed’.

Inflammation is the body's way of healing itself after an injury and protecting itself from infection. The body behaves in a similar way when bacteria and viruses get the better of us. Pain and fever are part of the healing process of damaged or infected tissue.

This type of acute inflammation is short term and is considered to be good, as it helps the body get back to its healthy state. Its effects wear off in a few days.

But, sometimes, the body is riddled with ‘bad’, or chronic inflammation.

“Inflammation is the body’s natural response to defend itself from harmful substances, injuries and to renew damaged cells. However, it is not always beneficial when it becomes chronic, leading to an ongoing destructive process

where the immune system attacks the body’s healthy cells. This can cause many chronic diseases,” says Diana Nakhle, senior dietitian at Carlton Nutrition Center, Bahrain.

Goodness! Do I have it?

If you’re wondering how to spot this condition, there are signs and symptoms to watch out for. Diana says: “Depending on the disease type, the symptoms might be generalised pain in the muscles and joints, along with fatigue, fever, loss of appetite and gastrointestinal problems like diarrhoea, abdominal pain and constipation.”

But there are other telltale signs that point to inflammation of the bad kind: excessive belly fat, consistently high blood sugar levels, feeling exhausted all the time, allergies and a puffy look.

Depression, skin outbreaks, anxiety or perpetual ‘brain fog’ are other fallouts of chronic inflammation.

Why does it happen?

This culinary spice is shown to reduce inflammation and speeds up muscle recovery. Due to these effects, it has been clinically shown to reduce knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis.

Besides nutrition, physical activity should be a priority for at least 90 minutes per week and we must aim for enough sleep,” she says.

To conclude, Diana says: “Nowadays our lifestyle is directly affecting our health.

We should always think of prevention rather than treatment. Aim for a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition and activity, especially if you have certain risk factors. and always seek the help of qualified health professionals."

EXERCISE ELIMINATES INFLAMMATION A detailed study shows that as little as 20 minutes of regular brisk walking can reduce inflammation. Each time we are physically active, the body benefits at a cellular level. But remember, over-exercising is counteractive to the purpose. It’s important to give your body time to recover from strenuous exercise. Switch workouts every day so you are not taxing the muscles and be sure to enjoy exercise-free days too.

So, what if I don’t treat it?

Chronic inflammation releases a downpour of damaging substances that, over time, can make your body very sick. This condition needs to be controlled for your long-term health and wellness. “If left untreated, it can cause damage to the heart, brain and other organs. It plays a role in almost every major disease, like heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, amongst others,” says Diana.

She advocates that patients with the above-mentioned symptoms consult with a physician, as the treatment depends on the type of disease, medical history and severity of symptoms.

OK, what can I do for myself?

Diana first suggests tweaks in your diet.

She says: “An ‘anti-inflammatory diet’ is basically a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, fruits, vegetables with little red meat. When we talk about inflammation we directly think of Omega-3 fatty acid as

A Cornucopia of Chocolatey Choice Memories of the smorgasbord of delectable dishes at this renowned hotel still puts Behnaz Sanjana straight into Friday mode any day of the week.

W

ith ardent intent to catch up after a long time, a friend and I headed to Al Safir’s Chocoholic Friday Brunch at the Sheraton Bahrain. The restaurant enveloped us with the warmth of its sun-kissed ambience, and the light wooden panelling interspersed with glass lent the space a cosy glow.

This Friday spread is not all chocolatey – there are plenty of savouries and live cooking counters to write home about. We started at the focal point of the restaurant – the semienclosure where delicious fare awaited us.

My partiality for soup drew me to the giant tureens just past the live shawarma station.

The intoxicating aromas of lemongrass, chilli and lime meant the Thai soup won out over the hearty minestrone. The salad counter was resplendent, with ample choice for vegetarians.

Platters of seafood calamari rolls, gravlax, Thai chicken salad, vegetable terrine and caprese salad sat alongside dainty bowls offering stuffed egg, brie and dried fig, and salmon roulade, amongst other fresh fare. The assortment of cheese at the bread and cheese station was

commendable too.

The affable chefs at the live pasta and teriyaki stations were happy to mix up ingredients to guests’ liking – doling out steaming plates of Italian and Oriental comfort food. Kid-friendly chow such as Tupelo fried chicken, potato wedges, mini pizzas and burgers kept the little ones munching happily.

Out of the 10 or 12 delightful main course options, I took second helpings of the mustard baked hammour (delicious melt-in-yourmouth fish with a mustardy sauce) and the almond potato (golden crusted spheres of nutty potato mash). I would have had some more of the yummy stir-fried duck in its cute little ramekin, but my mind directed me towards the glorious hunk of prime rib with beef jus calling out to me. The salmon papillote with dill sauce sitting beside it made it slightly harder to select what went onto my plate.

Beyond this, stood the seafood counter, laden with the ocean’s colourful bounty waiting to be cooked up as you fancy. There are also dressed oysters and clams.

Gliding past the lovely ladies of the live band, I found myself looking at the real deal – the ‘chocoholic’ aspect of the brunch. My eyes must have been swirling in concentric circles, hypnotised by the sheer array of sweetness that stood before me.

The large two-tiered centre spread had the most mind-boggling variety of desserts arranged around a fantastic sculpture made of, well, of course, chocolate! The staples of a sweet binge were present – red velvet cake, chocolate mousse, almond chocolate parfait, et al. The sights and smells of other inimitable creations kept the brain in tempted anticipation till I reached the table and took a bite. Some of the desserts looked just too pretty to break into, but the eager palate pushes you to dig in anyway. My favourites were the vanilla dome, raspberry dark and white chocolate mousse, pistachio swiss roll and mango mousse.

For choco-fanatics wanting to ‘dive’ in, there are two chocolate fountains – light and dark – to be savoured with gooey marshmallows, fresh cut fruit and cubes of sponge cake. The chef at the neighbouring counter flipped paper-thin crepes onto plates, stuffed and topped with fillings, ice creams and sauces of preference. Yet another dessert stand sported traditional Arabic sweetmeats, and types of local dates as well.

The Chocoholic Friday brunch at the Sheraton Bahrain is ideal for family and friends to spend quality time together, in the company of marvellous flavours and music. We spent some leisurely three-plus hours there, doing justice not only to the culinary plethora before us, but also to our precious friendship. www.womanthismonth.com

VALENTINE'S DELIGHT CAKE SPONGE INGREDIENTS: • 250g white sugar • 3 whole eggs • 160ml labneh • 200ml oil • 320g flour • 5g baking powder • 5g baking soda • 20ml Rrd food colouring • 5ml vinegar METHOD: • Beat sugar and eggs for 15 minutes.

Scrape the mixture together then add labneh and oil and beat again for 10 minutes. Add in the flour, baking powder and baking soda one by one.

• Fold in the red food colour and vinegar then bake at 180˚C for 15-20 minutes.

• Cut the sponge into three round shapes with the help of a ring to make the layers.

• Set aside or place in the chiller.

he saying goes that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and if you want come up with something special that looks really impressive but is, in fact, quite simple, chef Nitai Chand has the answer.

Almost a year after his arrival at the K Hotel, chef Nitai Chand has put his 20-plus years of kitchen experience to good use to come up with a special Valentine’s Day recipe that will guarantee you plenty of romantic Brownie points.

To be fair, he does make it look ridiculously easy but, with his main inspiration coming from cooking with his mum in her kitchen, we’re hopeful it’s a confection even Woman This Month’s culinarily challenged team can recreate.

He says: "This is a hassle-free recipe, anyone can make easily and all the ingredients are available in the market, no need to think about finding substitutes.

FILLING INGREDIENTS: • 175g mascarpone cheese • 50g white chocolate • 40g icing sugar METHOD: Mix together to create a light paste.

CAKE PREPARATION • Retrieve the three round-shaped sponges.

Add a little sugar syrup to the sponge and then apply the cheese mixture to the first layer; place the second sponge on top and repeat with the third layer.

• Cover with same cheese mixture and chill for 30 minutes.

hen a woman becomes a ‘mother’, it is like discovering the existence of a room in her house that was already there but that she knew nothing of. It is not a completely strange territory, since the room was always in the house; the house where she has lived long enough to scrutinise each and every corner. Yet what those four unseen walls shielded is a mystery to her that will take days, months and maybe even years to fathom.

What’s common though is that each and every woman faced with the whole new room dilemma is adamant and unshakeably determined to be the Agatha Christie she always dreamed to be.

She will read every book related to the matter; she will excel at all the guessing games; she will remember every piece of advice her grandmother ever gave her, and add her little touch to it to fit the new era. She will perform flawlessly on just four hours of sleep or less and endless shots of caffeine; she will come up with solutions you’ve never heard of to problems you’ve never imagined.

She will become a beast, with eyes in the back of her head, nothing ever going unseen or unnoticed.

A beast with a heart of gold, a heart living outside of her body, jumping, running around and having a normal life just in front of her eyes — her kids!
