Welcome or “Ahlan wa-sahlan” to NSA Bahrain. Whether you are permanently stationed here or just passing through, you will find that MWR will keep you active with high quality recreational programs and state of the art facilities. Contained within is detailed information about MWR facilities, programs and services as well as local shopping, restaurants and recreational opportunities in Bahrain. This booklet will act as your recreational adviser saving you time, money and effort in gathering information. If all the answers you are seeking are not contained within this booklet, call the MWR Main Office (17-85-4422 or 439-4422) and you will be put in contact with people who do!

MWR OVERVIEW Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department The MWR department at NSA Bahrain provides recreational programs and services which help to maintain and/or improve the quality of life for the NSA community. Our mission is to provide support for all NSA authorized personnel and their families in addition to ships deployed in the Arabian Gulf, Arabian

Gulf Det Sites and DoD activities in the AOR. Development of new services, programs, and leisure time activities is an ongoing process and we welcome your input! MWR is committed to growing, changing and improving its services to meet the needs of our community. MWR Information Recreation opportunities and information about MWR facilities, programs and events is as close as the nearest MWR facility. Event calendars, program brochures, and booklets can be found on the numerous MWR Newsstands and MWR bulletin boards throughout the NSA compound. These materials provide the NSA community monthly MWR updates of ‘what’s going on’! General information and special event announcements also appear in command POW, Navy Media Center bulletins, and electronic marquees located on base. Individuals can direct questions and/or comments concerning MWR operations directly to key MWR personnel via MWR suggestion boxes found throughout our facilities. RECREATION Liberty Center / Single Service Member Programs, 439-3192 Bldg. 305, Hours: Sat-Wed 1000-2200, Thu-Fri & Holidays 1000-Midnight This recreation center is the single service member’s home away from home. Liberty’s facility offers an array of trips, tours and tournaments as well as other leisure activities. Liberty offers: a topside outdoor party facility, snack bar, free internet and Wi-Fi, TV lounge, gaming stations, billiards, ping pong, air hockey, and gaming stations. Outdoor Recreation (ODR), 439-6992 Bay 1 (Banz Gate), Hours: Sun-Thurs 1000-1800 There are a myriad of recreational, sporting and leisure equipment and gear available for checkout. Check out items are subject to a nominal fee. Inquire, reserve and pay for your recreation rentals at the ITT Office in the Freedom Souq. Library, 439-4062 Bldg. 18, Hours: Sun-Thurs 1000-1800 A world of knowledge is at your fingertips at the MWR Base Library. Located on the second floor, thousands of books, magazines and newspapers are available. Come and enjoy the facility where you can use Internet and Wi-Fi for personal, educational and research purposes. Bowling Center, 439-4205 Bldg. 70, Hours: Sat-Wed & Holidays 1100-2200 and Thurs-Fri 1100-2300 The MWR Bowling Center offers four fully automated lanes for every bowler, whether a beginner or a professional. Complete with a snack bar, this facility is great for base intramural leagues and private parties. Tickets & Tours is your one stop information source and is located in the Community Recreation Office on the second deck of the Freedom Souq. Our friendly staff is here to assist you with everything from signing up for local tours to picking up flyers about local information. CHILD & YOUTH PROGRAMS Child Development Center (CDC), 439-9092 Bldg. 267 Sunday - Thursday, 6 am to 6:30 pm The center provides care for children 6-weeks to 5-years of age full time (fee is based on total family income) and hourly care on a space available basis. School-Age Care Program (SAC), 439-4901 Bldg. 267, 2nd Deck Before School Care, Sun-Thurs, 6 am to 8 am After School Care, Sun-Thurs, 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm No School Days, 6 am - 6:30 pm In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America and 4-H Clubs, the School Age-Care (SAC) program includes a before and after school program for children ages 5 (kindergarten) through 12 during the school year with full day, holiday, and summer camps provided when school is not in session. Before and after school fees are based on total family income. The SAC also offers hourly care for $4 per hour per child for up to 25 hours per week. â–

MWR FACILITIES, PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Teen Center, 439-4902 Bldg. 18, Desert Dome Sun-Thurs, Sun-Thur: 2:45 pm - 6:30 pm (school days), 9 am - 6:30 pm (non school days) In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America and 4-H Clubs, this center features a club/multimedia room, game room, music room, computer labs, arts/crafts area, homework area, and much more. The Teen Center is for youth in 7th-12th grade. Youth Sports, 439-4902 Youth Sports program provides recreation sporting activities for children ages 3-18. Throughout the year, Youth Sports provides a wide range of activities for children including leagues, clinics, and summer camps. Youth Sports offers both your traditional and non-traditional sports. Traditional sports include soccer, flag football, basketball while non-traditional sports include, gaga ball, dodge ball, running club and much more. Youth Sports offers the Start Smart program which is an introduction program for children under the age of five. ATHLETICS Fitness Center, 439-9306 Bldg. 261, Freedom Souq, Hours: Sunday-Saturday & Holidays 0500-2400 MWR Fitness Center has everything you need to get in shape. This state of the art facility offers: free weights, Nautilus equipment, cardio-theater (treadmills, cross trainers, elliptical machines, rowing machines, stationary bikes and steppers), sauna, locker room and locker rental. Our Health and Wellness Program assesses and evaluates current fitness levels, aides in the development of fitness goals and provides programs and periodic progress evaluations. Outdoor Fitness Spaces - NSA1 Functional Fitness Area Open daily, 24 hours This unmanned (covered & lit) fitness facility is managed by the MWR Fitness Center and is located near the softball field. It provides the opportunity

for a varied workout with more of the functional aspects of fitness. Patrons can maximize the use of the functional pure motion work station, as well as the kettlebells, sand bags, Bosu & medicine balls, plyo boxes and the Schwinn bike. It is required to sign in and out when using the facility and it's recommended that patrons bring their own water source for proper hydration. - NSA 2 Pierside Fitness Sunday-Thursday 0530-0800, 1100-1300, 1600-2000 Friday & Saturday 0700-1100 This manned (covered & lit) fitness facility is managed by the MWR Fitness Center and is located on NSA2 next to the Warrior Barracks. Patrons have access to equipment including rowers, wall balls, plyo boxes, stretching equipment, jump ropes and more. It is required to sign in and out when using the facility and it's recommended that patrons bring their own water source for proper hydration. Family Pool, 439-8738 Sunday-Thursday 1000-1500, Friday & Saturday 1000-1800 32’ X 16’, 3.5 ft. to 6 ft. recreation aquatic venue for family member use with baby pool area, shower and locker facilities. Fitness Pool, 439-4102 Bldg. 37, Hours: Sun-Thurs 0500-1800 and Friday, Sat & Holidays 1000-1800 This 25m pool facility offers lanes for lap swimming, unit training and scuba certification classes. Skate Park, 439-9306 MWR provides fun at our local Skate Park located next to the Family Pool. Skate at your own risk. Park closes at 2200. ■

Intramural Sports, 439-8916 The Captain’s Cup Intramural Sports Program is designed to develop and maintain physical readiness by encouraging units to participate in athletic competitions. The Intramural Sports Program is developed by the MWR Athletic Department, but it is implemented in conjunction with Command and Unit Intramural Representatives. Tournaments are scheduled monthly. Gymnasium, 439-3095 Bldg. 261, Freedom Souq, Hours: Sunday-Saturday & Holidays 0500-2400 Located on the second deck, come enjoy sport play on the: basketball courts, volleyball court, racquetball courts, spin bike room and indoor running track. A variety of sports and exercise equipment is available for checkout as well as instructional classes, Intramural Sport competitions or pick up games. Climbing Wall, 439-9306 Bldg. 261, Freedom Souq. By appointment only. MWR Climbing Wall is a 30-foot, 5-station vertical challenge and fitness venue location. Group Exercise Classes, 439-3161 MWR provides individual and group exercise opportunities and incorporates the “Get Fit” Wellness Program. The “Get Fit” Wellness Program provides guidance for developing individual fitness programs, introduces and/or reacquaints individuals to the athletic facilities available here at NSA Bahrain. The “Get Fit” Wellness Program sessions are available upon request and are offered free of charge. (Note: As timings are likely to change, it’s advisable to call first before visiting) Heritage & Cultural Attractions The rich history of the Kingdom lends itself to range of attractions that showcase the heritage and culture of Bahrain. In most cases there is no entry fee to visit. Souqs Many of the smaller villages retain a traditional marketplace; the most popular sites, though, are the Manama and Muharraq souqs. Both are open seven days a

week, and the best time to visit is between 10am and 1pm, and then from 4pm to 9pm. • Manama Souq. Located behind the Bab Al Bahrain building, the souq is a network of small lanes that house a host of small stores selling everything from souvenirs and gifts to electronic products. The area is also home to many gold and jewellery shops, and tailors. The souq runs from the Yateem Centre on its east, to the Gold Souq in the south and to Gold City in

the west. The first phase of a major renovation plan has been completed, in the shape of the Bab Al Bahrain Souq building. • Muharraq Souq. Full of a variety of shops selling fresh fruits and vegetables, local crafts and everyday products; you can also purchase traditional Arabic sweets, halwa, which are made in Muharraq. Landmarks • Bab Al Bahrain. The Gateway of Bahrain, in Central Manama once stood at the water’s edge and was originally designed by Sir Charles Belgrave, in 1945. It has since been refurbished (1986)

to incorporate traditional Islamic architectural features. The ground floor houses the Tourist Information Office and a handicrafts shop. Sightseeing bus tours depart from here daily at 9:30am and 3:30pm. Opening hours: 8am-12pm and 4:30pm-6pm, closed on Fridays. Forts There are four major forts that are worth a visit; two of which are on Muharraq Island. • Abu Mahir Fort. Also known as Muharraq Fort, this fort is located at the southern tip of the island, and was built to protect against the western approaches. Constructed

upon the ruins of a much older fort, on Abu Mahir Island, it rests against the coastline and boasts beautiful sea views. • Arad Fort, close to the airport in Muharraq. Initially built by Arabs in the 16th century, the fort was captured by the Portuguese around 1559 and changed hands again in 1635 after being seized by Omanis. Today, it has been fully restored and frequently hosts cultural events and shows. Opening hours: Sun.-Wed., 7am-2pm, Thu. and Sat. 9am-6pm, Fri. 3pm-6pm. Entrance fee is 200 fils. E 17 672-278. • Bahrain Fort, located at Karbabad village on the edge of the Seef area. It is sometimes referred

to as Qal’at al Bahrain, but more commonly-known as the Portuguese Fort. There is also an 11th century Islamic fort nearby, and the Portuguese remains date back to the 16th century. Archaeologists have also discovered seven distinct foundations, which have been dated to 2500 BC. The site also includes a museum and café. Opening hours: Daily, 8am-8pm. • Shaikh Salman bin Ahmad Al Fateh Fort, in Riffa. This 19th century fort was built for its strategic location, on an escarpment overlooking the Hunanaiya Valley. Opening hours: Sun.-Wed. 8am-2pm, Thu and Sat. 9am-6pm, and Fri. 3pm-6pm.

BAHRAIN - A SNAPSHOT Museums • Al Oraifi Museum, Muharraq, was opened by artist Rashi Al Oraifi in 2010 to display art and artifacts from the Dilmun era and currently holds over 100 pieces. Admittance BD1. Opening hours: Sun.-Thu. 8am-1pm, 4pm-8pm. • Beit al Qur’an (Qur’an house), Hoora. One of island’s most distinctive pieces of architecture, it is home to a rare collection of Islamic manuscripts, prints and books. Opening hours: Sat.-Wed. 9am-12pm, 4pm-6pm and Thu. 9am-12pm; closed on Fri. E 17 290-101. • Bahrain National Museum, on Al Fateh Corniche. A collection of Bahrain’s ancient archaeological artifacts are on display in nine

halls, depicting the archaeology, culture and lifestyle of Bahrain’s pre-industrial past as well as natural flora and fauna. Adjacent to the museum is the Arts Hall, which hosts regular events. Opening hours: daily from 8am-8pm. E 17 298-777. • Currency Museum, Diplomatic Area. Situated with the Bahrain Monetary Agency building, it showcases the history and usage of coinage and notes dating back

hundreds of years. Opening hours: Sun.-Thu. 8am-2pm; closed on Fri. and public holidays. E 17 547-700. • Oil Museum, Sakhir, was inaugurated to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the momentous first discovery of oil in the Arabian Gulf. It houses old photographs, drilling equipment and a working model of an oil rig. Adjacent to the museum is the oil well that first pumped the ‘black’ gold in 1932. Opening hours: Thu. and Fri. 9am-6pm. E 17 753-475. Famous Houses A number of houses, of historical

significance, owned by members of the Royal Family and important businessmen have been restored and are open to the public for viewing. • Al Jasra House, Al Jasra village, near the Saudi Causeway. Abdulla Avenue, and sits on the ‘Pearl Route’. • Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa House was built by the King Hamad’s great, great grandfather, who ruled from 1869 until 1932. A house of royal splendour, the distinctive architecture with high archways, stained glass windows, wall carvings and patterned ceilings also includes a traditional wind tower, channelling cooling breezes into the living areas. Traditional Crafts It is still possible to seek out those plying traditional crafts around the island. With the foundation works dating back to 692 AD, this is one of the oldest mosques in Bahrain. Prominent due to twin minarets which were constructed upon the rebuilds in the 14th and 15th centuries, the building is easy to spot. Opening hours: Sun. to Wed. 8am-2pm, Thu. and Sat. 9am-6pm and Fri. 3pm-6pm. History • Barbar Temple, off the Budaiya Highway. The Barbar Temple, after excavation in the 1950s and 1960s, revealed three superimposed building phases, dating back to

the second and third millennia BC. Opening hours: visit any time of the day; closed on Fridays. • Diraz Temple, off the Budaiya Highway. Built around 3100 BC, this temple is uniquely constructed upon rows of limestone columns. • Sa’ar Temple, Sa’ar. This symmetrically-shaped temple was built around 1900 BC and was used for almost 200 years. The temple is positioned on high ground and located centrally in a settlement

from the Bronze Age; it was also built from locally-cut limestone. Shaikh Ebhrahim Center The Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, in Muharraq, celebrates the life and work of the famous poet and writer of the same name. The centre contains a number of arts-based houses that have been converted into mini museums. Opening hours: Sat.-Thu. 9am-1pm

Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa House was opened in 2002 and contains a small library of his book collection on the first floor; at the back there is a state-of-the-art auditorium which seats 300 people. • Abdulla Al-Zayed House. Opened in 2003 to display the first prints of local and regional magazines, this two-storey house has a rich architectural design. Each year, it publishes and displays the book of the winner from the high school and university competition that the Sh. Ebrahim Center runs. • Bin Matar House. (See Famous Houses) • Ibrahim Al Arrayed House of Poetry. The home of a prominent Bahraini poet, it is the only house within the Shaikh Ebrahim Center portfolio that is located outside

• Kurar House showcases how traditional Bahraini dresses are decorated with embroideries. Opened in 2007, women still perform this long-standing craft for visitors. Opening hours: Sun., Mon., and Thu. 8am-5pm. • Mohammed bin Fares House, opened in 2005, features the artifacts of Mohammed bin Fares, who was an important figure in the development of Sut-style music. The Pearl Route The Ministry of Culture has created a walking route throughout Muharraq, to retrace the sights and sounds of

the pearling industry. The project was completed around 2012 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. • Abu Mahir Fort. (See Forts) • Bin Matar House. (See Famous Houses) • Muharraq Souq. Other Attractions • King Fahad Causeway. Halfway across the 25-km span linking Bahrain to Saudi Arabia is an islet serving as a customs zone. On payment of a BD2 toll, anyone can drive out to the island, but you need a visa to continue on to Saudi Arabia. Visit any time during the day or night. • Jebel Al Dukhan (Smokey Mountain), about 8 km from the

Alba roundabout, is the highest natural point in the Kingdom, at 137 metres. The mountain has recently been declared a military zone; so climbing and photography are forbidden. • Tree of Life, about 12 km from Jebel al Dukhan. This mature mesquite tree stands alone in an otherwise barren desert; its source of water remains a mystery. Visit any time during the day or night.
