FOREWORD
George F. Middleton
It’s my pleasure to present the Bahrain Education & Personal Development Guide 2018. It’s the most comprehensive source of information on everything educational in the Kingdom and is linked to the regularly updated companion website bahraineducationguide.com With its young and vibrant population, Bahrain is well served at all levels of education. For children across all age groups there is a greater range of options available than ever before, ensuring there is an establishment to meet every requirement from special developmental needs to instruction in a child’s mother tongue. There is also a huge variety of out-of-school activities available, from dance to football, some offered in specialist centres, others available through the schools themselves. Adults too are abundantly well served with the kingdom’s wide range of universities and higher education institutes, many of which are internationally accredited or tied in with overseas counterparts. They offer degrees in careerspecific subjects such as medicine and law and also more broadly-based topics including management, construction and the sciences. For those who want to cultivate a particular talent there are centres for arts, music, science and languages, to name but a few. This handy pocket guide provides carefully researched listings on private and public schools, including kindergartens, universities, colleges, specialist institutes, learning centres and related services throughout Bahrain. To make the guide user-friendly, we have laid out the schools in alphabetical order and age group across both private and public sectors while other listings include subject-specific sections for ease of reference. To help parents and students make their choices we’ve also included contact telephone numbers and websites. Bahrain has long been known for its ethnic and cultural diversity, with people from dozens of nations peacefully co-existing alongside each other and there is no greater illustration of this than in its educational institutions where children and young people, Bahraini and expat, learn together in an atmosphere of acceptance and co-operation. The Kingdom really does have education options suitable for all, though it may require a little research which is where this guide and bahraineducationguide.com come in. We hope you find the Bahrain Education & Personal Development Guide 2018 useful in helping you explore the full range of offerings available. ■ 6

Investing in the Future
E
ARLY years spent in school are some of the most important in a child’s whole life. The experiences he or she has there, whether good or bad, will stay with them for many years to come, if not for ever. Thus, the choice of school your child attends is one of the most important decisions you will ever make for their future. The impact of primary and secondary education cannot be highly enough stressed both in helping to cultivate and develop children into useful and productive members of society but also as a basis for continued learning at college, university and beyond. Along with family input, school helps to develop the opinions and outlook of children and young people. In today’s climate, education is about so much more than simply academic subjects. And, while these are undoubtedly important, school days are also crucial for building friendships, character and even future networks as well as keeping youngsters up to date with the latest technological and sporting developments. Many children in Bahrain are what is considered ‘Third Culture’; that is, those raised outside the culture of their parents’ homeland. For these youngsters, the educational setting, friendships
formed and extracurricular activities offered, go a long way towards helping them and their families form bonds both with their current home and their contemporaries, perhaps of different origins and cultures. Making sure to choose a school that not only suits the needs of your child’s personality and abilities but also has the faculty and facilities to offer a first-class all-round education, as well as an engaging learning environment, has never been more important. Bahrain has a well-established and thriving public education system and is fortunate to enjoy a wide range of internationally accredited private schools, each with a specific offering to suit a variety of needs. Al Dana Nursery takes students from 18 months to five years and aims to help develop the child’s physical, cognitive, creative, 7

imaginative, artistic and other skills through play-oriented programmes, which motivate the young children for better learning success. Since 1995 the Bangladesh School has offered both the Bangladeshi national curriculum and the British International Curriculum for which fees are said to be among the lowest in the country. EtonHouse International Preschool operates out of newly renovated buildings, with classes run by Western qualified teachers offering a unique programme for children aged 18 months to four years in an international environment. Fairytopia Kids Club is one of the island’s newer offerings, housed in a large, welcoming building where youngsters aged two to 12 years are encouraged to develop and love of learning thanks to small class sizes and excellent facilities. Established in 2000, Hawar International School provides a safe, segregated and stimulating learning environment for students of all ages from Nursery through Elementary, Middle and High School with a balanced educational programme in both Arabic and English languages. Established in 1977, Nadeen School is well known for its childcentred, holistic approach to education. It is one of only two schools in Bahrain to be an accredited member of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) and an accredited British
School Overseas (BSO) school recognised by the British Department for Education. The RIA Institute was established in 1999, with a commitment to education for all, catering to the needs of mainstream learners as well as students with special educational needs. The British Preparatory School caters for youngsters aged 18 months to six years, offering British curriculum learning to prepare them for larger British schools. The British School of Bahrain has provided more than two decades of outstanding education in the Kingdom and was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Bahrain’s Quality Assurance Authority in a recent inspection. With such a wide selection, from those which cater for specific nationality and language groups to others which offer specialist curricula or special needs learning systems, there really is something to meet every requirement. This enables you to ensure your children receive the very best and most appropriate education for their needs and future development. ■ 8

Fairytopia
Developing Skills and Talent
F
AIRYTOPIA has been running for 10 years, with its newest branch, Fairytopia Kids Club, established just a year ago. The four-storey building at Buhair can hold up to 400 people at one time, but the centre’s emphasis is on quality rather than quantity and it promises small class sizes (average 15 children) in which students “have fun on every visit”. Fairytopia offers pre-school classes for two to six-year-olds in the morning, and afternoon club for two to 12s from 4pm to 8pm. The international Early Years Foundation curriculum uses both English and Arabic, and covers maths, reading, writing, music, social skills and studies and music. The Early Years Foundation curriculum is developmental and designed to support young children in developing language, play and social skills through a combination of structured language, communication activities and adult-supported play. Highly qualified and motivated educators look carefully at each child and consider their needs, interests, challenges and their stages of development to help plan successful experiences across all areas of learning and development. Children work towards long-term development maps based on modules focused on the child’s
individual needs. Careful record-keeping and input from therapists allow parents to assess their child’s progress with parent-team meetings at least twice per term. In terms of facilities, Fairytopia Kids Club is second to none, with academic classrooms, art and science rooms, more than one gymnasium and an indoor jungle playland. The centre’s mission is “To do great things for kids by: creating an environment where children love to learn and accept new challenges; building confidence through accomplishments; teaching respect for others; ensuring that kids have fun on every visit.” And to help achieve this, instructors have extensive training both in and out of the classroom and Fairytopia Kids Club is constantly updating both its training and curriculum to ensure students benefit from the latest techniques. As well as academic subjects, youngsters can get involved in gymnastics, martial arts, cooking, art, drama, science and dance. And the club can also offer a range of different Birthday Adventures which allow parents to sit back and relax while a party host takes the guests through fun-filled activities, with the centre organising everything from set-up and cleanup to paper goods and entertainment. ■ 27
Nadeen School
Ongoing Development
N
ADEEN School, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is well known for its childcentred, holistic approach to education. It follows the English National Curriculum, is a founding and accredited member of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) and is an accredited British School Overseas (BSO) school recognised by the UK’s Department for Education. Rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Bahrain’s Qualifications and Quality Assurance organisation, it was the only school in the Middle East to bring home an award from the British International School awards this year for ‘Best Pastoral Initiative’. It also obtained the Kingdom’s highest scores in the recent international PIRLS examination for reading and literacy. The mission statement: “Since 1978 Nadeen School has been dedicated to providing a nurturing, safe, stimulating and encouraging environment in which children of all ages, nationalities, abilities and strengths can develop a lifelong love for exploration and learning,” and school motto of “Small School – Big Family” are infused through all facets of the establishment. Four hundred children aged two to 11 years are enrolled from PreNursery to Year 6 and the school is truly international with more than 50 nationalities represented. The campus boasts four buildings, two
playgrounds, beautiful garden areas, a school farm with chickens and ducks, an organic garden and interactive outdoor learning stations. Alongside the English National Curriculum, its ‘8Cs’ (confidence, communication, collaboration, creativity, curiosity, commitment, craftsmanship and critical thinking) are the foundation of all teaching. The school believes that if children are equipped with these interrelated skills, they can learn anything and will be successful, lifelong learners. This philosophy ties together the curricula across the year groups as all children work on these same skills. Originality, expression and development of character are also encouraged. Students thrive academically, socially and emotionally under the staff ’s expert care. The faculty instills a love and excitement for learning in the children through dynamic and creative lessons. Staff members are dedicated to developing each child’s abilities to the fullest. Nadeen School sets high expectations for behaviour, conduct and communication, and the children are well-known for being eloquent, confident, and wellmannered. The school also fosters a proactive and involved homeschool relationship and parental participation is encouraged. Visit the school or see www. nadeenschool.com for more information. ■ 28

The British School of Bahrain
British School – Bahraini Heart
T
HE British School of Bahrain (BSB) is unique. It strives to prepare students, aged three to 18, for some of the world’s best universities. Whilst the typically ‘British’ values of integrity, responsibility and resilience are embedded in the school’s ethos, the ‘Bahrain’ part of the name and identity is equally important. Bahrain has always been ahead of its time in the region. That warm Bahraini welcome and appreciation for diversity and individuality is a spirit that pervades the BSB. Ensconced in magnificent facilities in Hamala, the school caters for more than 70 nationalities with 2,600-plus students. Student-staff relationships are particularly strong, with teachers
taking the time to get to know each individual in their care. As part of the Inspired family of international schools, the BSB is outward looking with a global perspective. Students are encouraged to have a sense of global responsibility and are active in raising funds for local and international charities. They are proud participants in international MUN (Model United Nations) conferences, World Scholar’s Cup and international sports competitions. ■
A welcoming school community for students aged 3-18, the BSB is a member of the Inspired family of prestigious international schools.

EtonHouse International Pre-School
Shaping the Future
E
TONHouse International Education Group has been established 23 years and operates more than 100 schools globally. Housed in newly renovated buildings in Janabiya, with Westernqualified teachers, who are themselves lifelong learners, the school offers a unique programme for children aged 18 months to four years in an international preschool environment. The early years are vital in children’s mental, physical and social development. It is important that their individual needs are identified through observation and documentation of their interests, development and progress. The school’s early childhood curriculum is inspired by internationally accepted best teaching practice from around the world, such as the Reggio Emilia educational project of northern Italy. Its Reggio Inquiry-based IB/ PYP curriculum is designed to welcome both local and international children to discover the joy of learning and playing together. Learning a second language with children from other cultures opens a world of horizons for EtonHouse students, enabling them to see the world through eyes other than their own. EtonHouse provides a bilingually English/Arabic enriched programme in a carefully resourced environment that stimulates the learning and development of children aged two to four years.
As part of this inquiry-based learning approach, young children at EtonHouse are respected as competent thinkers and communicators and are offered many opportunities to engage with a range of materials and resources that extend and challenge their thinking. The school believes that children have a right to a respectful environment. Through careful choice of colour, natural materials and the use of natural light, it aims to not only build relationships between the indoor and outdoor learning spaces, but to ensure our classrooms are aesthetic as well as functional spaces. The outdoor playground has been designed specifically to ensure children build deep relationships with the natural world. Facilities include sensory gardens as well as a children’s kitchen or vegetable garden, a water course and digging and construction areas. There is also a range of mobile climbing equipment which can be used flexibly and ensures our teachers can plan for a variety of different climbing and coordination challenges. The EtonHouse vision is “Shaping the future through education” and its mission statement includes developing confident and capable global citizens who are competent, sophisticated, respected, strong, curious, interested and communicative. ■ 32

Education for All
R
IA, or Regional Institute of Active Learning, was established in 1999 with the ethos of “Education for All”, offering inclusive educational services for all students from age two upwards and catering to both mainstream learners and those with special educational needs. The centre started with just seven students. Over the years it has grown substantially and now has a senior group of students with intellectual difficulties, many of whom have attended RIA all their lives. As well as a regular, mainstreamstyle, nursery set-up, with experienced and friendly staff, the centre has specialist staff including speech, behaviour and physical practitioners to help guide the
students to develop the skills needed in the classroom and the wider community. The well-qualified staff take regular professional development courses to keep updated with the latest innovations. The British Preparatory School
Building Firm Foundations
T
HIS school, which caters for children from 18 months to six years in a stimulating environment, is a British curriculum establishment which aims to help each child attain their full potential in a positive and encouraging atmosphere, which develops self-confidence and a love of learning. In keeping with the definition of the word “preparatory” the school is: • Preparing the children for future learning by building firm foundations, confidence and selfesteem. • Preparing them for entry into the larger British curriculum school. The school is run by Mrs Sandra Whitford, MBE, who was head of
St Christopher’s School for 21 years. Her main area of experience is with children aged two to 11 years, with a particular interest in two- to seven-year-olds. The teaching staff are all British trained and take pride in producing well-rounded, polite and enthusiastic children. A great emphasis is placed on the safety of the children as well as providing them with colourful and stimulating learning and play areas. ■

The Ladder to Success
W
ITH the country’s workforce expected to double in the next decade, competition for jobs and career development will be fierce, and young people aiming for their dream job need to offer qualifications that will give them a head start on the career ladder. Even really good high school exam results are often no longer enough for sought-after positions, and the percentage of the workforce bringing degrees and other further education certifications to the table is higher than ever. According to the United Nations Development Programme, 4,000 Bahrainis a year currently enter the job market with at least a college degree. And these figures don’t take into account the children of expatriates who are often born and educated in the Kingdom, so it is clear that continued study and higher education qualifications are more important than ever. Many of the Kingdom’s degree courses are run by or accredited to internationally recognised academic institutions offering qualifications that are accepted the world over. Virtually every speciality is offered right here in the Kingdom. The most recent addition to the Kingdom’s higher education sector is the British University of Bahrain which opened in April
2018. Tied up with the UK’s University of Salford, Manchester, it offers British degrees in areas including engineering, business and information communications technology. The Applied Science University is one of the leading private universities in the Kingdom, providing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to more than 3,000 students across disciplines including law, political science, business, management, accounting and finance, computer science and graphic and interior design and engineering. It is affiliated with various overseas courses. The University of Bahrain is the country’s largest university and the Kingdom’s only national university. It offers a huge range of courses and 20 specialised learning centres including Japanese, German and American studies and many more. Ahlia University, established in 2001, was the first private university to be licensed by the government and its six colleges include arts, science and education and health studies. The Arabian Gulf University offers medical qualifications and is aimed particularly at Gulf nationals, and the Royal University for Women is the country’s first purpose-built university dedicated solely to women. ■ 38

The British University of Bahrain
An Industrial Focus
T
HE British University of Bahrain (BUB) is the Kingdom’s newest university. Established in 2018, BUB represents a new concept in higher education in Bahrain. Through an exclusive partnership with the University of Salford, Manchester, BUB aims to bring the very best of British university education to Bahrain. All degrees taken at BUB are awarded by the University of Salford and are identical in content to those offered on Salford’s Manchester campus. Because the degrees available at BUB are identical to those offered in Manchester, students are able to transfer to Manchester at any stage in their studies; alternatively they can complete their entire degree in Bahrain. The University of Salford has a distinguished 50-year history of innovation in higher education and has achieved a distinctive position in the UK’s higher education landscape. One of Salford’s most notable achievements is the very close relationships it enjoys with the world of industry. As Salford’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Helen Marshall put it: “The University of Salford is truly an international university, but we have always stuck to our founding principles. Our research is relevant to businesses and governments, our graduates are work-ready and our academics
put collaboration with industry at the heart of what they do.” Echoing Professor Marshall’s comments, Professor Keith Sharp, BUB’s Vice President, added: “Although a new institution, BUB will build on this distinctive tradition of the University of Salford, through our close partnerships with industry in Bahrain and the Gulf region, through our distinctive approach to learning through active participation and through our focus on research and knowledge transfer which is relevant to local industry and the wider economy of Bahrain.” BUB is housed in a purposebuilt, state-of-the-art campus, adjacent to the Atrium Mall and Towers in Saar. The modern learning environment has been designed around the principles of active and collaborative learning. BUB has three colleges: Engineering and the Built Environment, Information and Communication Technology and Business which, between them, offer nine separate undergraduate programmes chosen for their direct relevance to the economy of Bahrain and the region. In 2019, BUB will add a suite of University of Salford Master’s programmes to its portfolio to meet the needs of graduates who wish to enhance their knowledge and qualifications. ■ 41
training institutes
Lifelong Learning
W
HILE good school grades and higher education qualifications are almost pre-requisites in the workplace these days, keeping up to date with the latest developments in one’s chosen field is equally as important. In fact many employers say a programme at a specialised training institute not only adds value to your resume but also demonstrates passion for your profession and willingness to go the extra mile. Professional certificates bridge the gap between the knowledge gained at university and that needed to progress in the workplace, and there is a range of institutes across the Kingdom aimed at developing virtually every commercial and practical skillset. Training institutes and establishments provide a wide range of specialised courses targeted at those who are looking to progress their careers. Many of them run in conjunction with specific industries and offer the types and levels of training those industries are seeking. Accreditation via organisations such as the UK’s world-recognised City & Guilds is a good indication of an establishment’s quality standards. In the airline industry, BAS Aircraft Engineering Training Centre operates the most specialised aviation training centre in the region. It is an EASA-approved
Part-147 training organisation, internationally accredited and operated under the auspices of Bahrain Airport Services. Bahrain Institute of Hospitality & Retail has been providing training for students from across the Gulf and beyond for almost 20 years. Berlitz is an international organisation with a local feel, offering language courses for business in a huge range of tongues, while the National Institute of Technology was set up to meet the Kingdom’s IT needs and is a pioneer in delivering the latest in Microsoft innovations. And Bahrain Institute of Banking & Finance (BIBF) covers a wide spectrum of subject matter, with over 300 different courses offered to the financial and corporate market — tailormade training solutions based on organisational requirements; specialised programmes taught by leading market specialists; and professional qualifications and degree programmes in partnership with major international organisations. The Nine Training Centre offers various training courses, Oasis Training Centre operates around the region in a range of areas from insurance to leadership skills, and there are new organisations setting up to take the mystery out of fintech. ■ 42

From Languages to Life Skills
W
HILE schools and colleges offer recognised learning methods for academic achievement, the style of instruction used in learning centres is often different and can be equally applied to children who need extra help, to adults wishing to pursue hobbies and to those hoping to study different languages. Learning centres usually focus on a few core services and their purpose is to supplement existing educational establishments rather than compete with them – such as the offering of Sylvan Learning, which helps school students who need extra tuition to build confidence and understanding. Courses will often include demonstrations from professionals, day care activities and tutoring. They may offer professional qualifications, such as training to allow practice in a specific field, but may also provide courses and programmes simply for enjoyment or furtherment of an interest or hobby such as art or sport. Significantly, both parents and employers are recognising the effectiveness of life-based learning. There are various national associations which offer language tuition as well as the chance to experience other cultures, such as Alliance Française, which has books and French language films to borrow as well as a range of social activities, and The British
Council which conducts thousands of hours of language tuition throughout the year. Language students can also take advantage of immersive learning at centres such as Berlitz Bahrain which offers day-to-day, real-life conversational simulations. For those whose interest tends towards sports, the island has much to offer. From horse riding at the many private stables, to coaching — including rugby, netball, football and Gaelic football — at Bahrain Rugby Football Club. There are also various organisations which have tie-ins with international sporting clubs, such as the Juventus Academy and Arsenal Soccer School. And there’s a huge range of choice should you wish to study martial arts, from tai chi at Ki Train to kickboxing at Bahrain MMA. The island also has a good range of music and dance options such as Bahrain Ballet Centre and Victoria Dance, whose students gain invaluable experience with appearances in regular public shows, and Room 2 Rock which offers practice and recording space for musicians as well as a range of lessons. Bahrain Music Institute also has a great range of classes from classical to contemporary and some of the schools, such as the British School of Bahrain, have specialised arts academies. ■ 49

The British Council
A History of Opportunity
T
HE British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. It creates opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and builds trust between them worldwide. The British Council has been present in the Kingdom for more than 80 years bringing the two countries close,r together through language and educational and cultural exchange. It is widely recognised for the excellence of its English courses, and staff are proud to have taught multiple generations of Bahrainis and expatriates. The teaching centre deals with upwards of 6,500 students annually, with more than 19,000 class hours taught to the highest standard.
The British Council in Bahrain has also received the Child Safety Award in the past year and continues its efforts in maintaining both its facility and curriculum to the highest quality. This summer, the British Council will once again open its doors to welcome thousands of children and adults into its English summer course, designed to boost anyone’s English skills over the course of one to two months. Alliance Française Bahrain
French Up Your Life!
M
ORE than a language centre, Alliance Française Bahrain (AFB) is an independent, non-profit centre that has been promoting cross-cultural exchange for almost 50 years. It celebrates its half-century in 2019. It is one of 819 Alliances Française, in 137 countries, offering members of the French and Bahraini communities the chance to participate in a yearround variety of educational, cultural and social activities. There is a wide range of French language courses, from standard to tailored, to suit all levels and needs following the European Framework of Reference for Languages. AFB is also the Bahrain exam centre for DELF (Diploma in French
Language) and TCF/TEF/TEFAQ – the French language proficiency tests required for emigration to France, Canada and Quebec. AFB works with private schools and is also working closely with the Ministry of Education to create French workshops for public schools. Its mission is to promote both Bahraini and French culture. AFB has organised film premiers featuring Bahraini actors and directors and, for several years, Make Music Bahrain has offered local talents a chance to show their skills. ■

Victoria Dance
Nurturing Future Talent
F
IRST established in 2000, the school is owned and run by Victoria Shaban, who has more than 25 years of teaching experience. Pupils have gone on to prestigious establishments in the UK and US and several students have pursued a career in dance. Victoria Dance has also appeared at various events and venues in Bahrain such as the opening of the inaugural Formula One Race in 2004, car launches and charity events. The school caters for students aged three to 18 and all are invited to take annual examinations from the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) of which the school is a member. They are also invited to join in the annual show.
Victoria is supported by two highly qualified dance teachers, Suraya Mohamed and Robert Viljoen, and the syllabus allows children to progress at their own pace. For students who want to take dance more seriously, they have the option of following the organisation’s Major Syllabus. The school also offers a complete range of other classes from tap and hip-hop to Irish dance, private lessons and adult classes. ■

service providers
The Backstage Players
L
EARNING is not just about schools and colleges; there is a whole service industry behind the education ‘storefront’ without which it could not fully function. Before kids even go to school, many parents will take them along to a playgroup to get a feel for the learning institutions. And when starting or heading back to school, children love the excitement of new equipment, from pencil cases to lunch boxes. Even adults taking up classes enjoy the thrill of kitting themselves out in new gear, whether it be gym clothing or maps to help in their language classes. Behind the scenes a whole range of independent stores and services assist in contributing significantly to various schools, universities and learning centres in Bahrain. Although not directly linked with the organisations, they play a notable role in the learning experience. Though a great deal of study is now online, books are still an important tool in the learning process, and local bookstores are a great source for reference guides, textbooks, novels and self-help books to aid children, tutors, professionals and college students. From Barnes & Noble to Words Bookstore Café and, of course, Jashanmal, the island boasts a range of booksellers who cater to
students’ various needs. Arts and craft shops, such as Celebrations and Talent, are great for supplies for creative, extracurricular projects, while regular stationery can be found in both supermarkets and at specialist suppliers Union Stationery. There is a plethora of sporting equipment providers, for anything from football boots to swimwear, whereas distinctive uniforms are offered by retail outlets like House of Uniforms for each educational institute in Bahrain. Financial services are also strong in the education world, with security being imperative to secure the future education of your children. A school fees insurance policy has become an attractive scheme for those seeking to guard against the cost of future education provision. Several banks offer loans and insurance plans to support education at all levels and some offer a dedicated professional who helps you choose the right package, depending on your needs and anticipating those of your children. Whatever your needs, the Kingdom offers a host of choices ranging from shops for school uniforms, stationery supplies, feessecuring schemes, or a playgroup for your child. ■ 58
