Dear Friends, We are pleased and excited to welcome you to our 8th Annual Bull and Female sale - More Than a Bull!! Our goal is to offer our customers a complete genetic program along with supportive services to maximize their profitability.

We are committed to selecting cattle that adapt to our environment of endophyte-infected fescue.

Cattle that thrive in “fescue country” will do the same in most any environment. We believe in cattle that flourish on grass; hence, we develop our bulls and females on forage. Developing bulls on forage will ultimately be beneficial to our customers, with the bulls purchased being superior for feet and leg soundness and longevity as compared to those developed on a high-concentrate diet.

In 2012, we were honored when Red Hill Farms was recognized as an American Simmental Association Performance Advocate with a perfect score of 600 for both spring and fall calving seasons. This is just one example of our commitment to collect detailed data and offer as much information as possible on each animal. We strive to objectively describe each animal. Also in 2012, the American Simmental Association (ASA) and the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) have given our customers another great tool for selecting bulls—a common EPD base. We read Amanda Radke’s comments on her BEEF Daily blog and appreciate her advocacy for animal agriculture. You may not realize that Amanda led a walkout of several thousand FFA members during the Carrie Underwood concert at the National FFA Convention in 2006. Amanda and her fellow FFA members were protesting the country singer’s anti-meat positions and her association with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). We are honored to have Amanda speak on Friday night during our Pre-Sale ‘Cattle Talk’.

SALE PROCEDURES: We will conduct a “Farmers’ Auction” to sell each individual lot. Cattle sell in catalog order. Each animal has a base price listed in the catalog. When it is time to sell a particular animal we will ask those interested to hold up their buyer number. If only one number is in the air, the animal will be sold at the base price to that individual. If there are multiple numbers in the air, we will gradually raise the price until one number remains.

If there is a tie (last two bidders drop out at the same time) the bid is given to the buyer with the lower buyer number. The other bidder may raise the bid by $250 if he wishes to stay in the auction. We intend for this to be a simple, low pressure sale for the benefit of all involved.

Multi-breed EPD base simplifies selection Since 2010, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the American Simmental Association (ASA) have combined the growth and carcass datasets to provide commercial producers with the most reliable EPDs in the beef industry. IN the summer of 2012, RAAA and ASA adopted a common base for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs so that all animals registered in either RAAA or ASA can be directly compared – regardless of breed makeup.

What is BASE? Raw Genetic Value + Base Adjustment = Published EPD For decades, each breed association has presented EPDs in their own language (the base).

Base is no more than a reference point for any trait against which subsequent generations of animals are compared. The establishment of a base ensures that the population to which future generations are compared to remains stable, which allows the breed’s genetic trend to be accurately identified.

Study Percentile Ranks…

Percentile ranks are an easy reference and therefore a powerful tool to assist you in becoming accustomed to the new multi-breed base. EPD percentile ranks reference how animals compare within their respective subpopulations, i.e. Breed Composition, Active Sires, Non-Parent Animals, etc. It’s important to realize that although the multi-breed base allows for direct comparison of Red Angus and Simmental EPDs, the percent ranks for Red Angus animals will continue to simply compare the genetics of Red Angus animals against other Red Angus. Thus, an animal that was in the top 10% for growth under the old Red Angus base will still be in the top 10% for growth in the new Red Angus multi-breed base.

Example: In the past, you preferred to purchase bulls that had a -2.0 or lower BW EPD. Since a -2.0 on the old RAAA base represented the top 20% for BW, you now need to use -2.7 as your critical selection threshold as that represents the top 20% for BW on the new multibreed base.

THE NEW COMMON EPD BASE… PROGRESS FOR SIMPLIFYING EVALUATION OF CATTLE ACROSS BREEDS Having a common EPD base between different breeds has been a dream of many of us crossbreeding advocates for a long time. With the Sire Evaluation completed in July 2012, our dream has become reality. With the Red Angus data, both Canadian and domestic, the Canadian black Angus data, the American Simmental data, and some other breeds, Simmental has the world’s largest multiple breed data set with nearly 10 million animal records. With this common base, comparing animals of the Red Angus and the Simmental breeds can be done without a comparison table. With this threshold being crossed, we can now work to include more breeds in this common base. For example, if we use popular sires from both breeds and a hybrid sire, the values you see are like comparing apples to apples, with no need to find a table to see what the EPDs for GW Predestined 701T, for example, would have in the Red Angus evaluation.

ABOUT THE CATALOG for RED ANGUS LOTS Cat: An animal’s category under the Red Angus recordation system. This is a registration structure that classifies an animal according to its percentage of Red Angus genes.

Yearling Weight (YW): predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

DAM MPPA: Most Probable Producing Ability (MPPA) - An estimate of a cow’s future productivity based on her past productivity of weaning ratios and number of progeny.

PERCENTILE RANK: The smaller numbers under each respective EPD is the percentile rank of that animal within the respective breed.

EPD DEFINITIONS Calving Ease Direct (CED): predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two year-old heifers. Higher values indicate greater calving ease of a sire’s progeny.

Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Maintenance Energy (ME): predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in percentage differences in energy required for body maintenance.

Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age.

Just like the Stayability EPD, Heifer Pregnancy EPDs are expressed in terms of percentage probability difference.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Higher values indicate greater calving ease of a sire’s daughters.

Stayability (STAY): predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age. Since the main reason for cows being culled before the age of six is being open, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring.

Marbling Score (MARB): predicts the difference for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades.

Rib Eye Area (REA): predicts the difference of carcass rib eye area between the 12th and 13th rib. Larger rib eye area is associated with more desirable carcass yield grade.

Yield Grade (YG): predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs. DAM’S INFO YOB: Birth year of dam.

WT./BCS: Cow weight and body condition score at last weaning.

BR: Number of calves weighed/Average birth weight ratio.

Why Crossbreed? MATERNAL HETEROSIS Not Glamorous… but HUGE! The benefits seen from using a SimAngus composite bull on a mainly straight-bred cowherd are subtle at first – slightly higher weaning weight, yearling weight, average daily gain and a higher calf survivability rate can be expected. However, research trials dated as far back as thirty years conclude the greatest advantage is an increase in overall cowherd production thanks to MATERNAL HETEROSIS. The crossbred cow is twenty to thirty percent more productive in her lifetime than a straight-bred cow due to increased longevity, increased efficiency, reduced age at puberty, calf survival rate, and increased rate of gain. That same research shows that MATERNAL HETEROSIS is directly responsible for: 1.3 years increased cow longevity (Cundiff 1993) -

20% more calf weaned per cow exposed (Gregory 1980) 1 more calf weaned in her lifetime (Weaber 2007)

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, focus on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another.

Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring $140 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $90 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. Red Hill Red Angus 18-Month Old Bulls

The Fall Bulls were weaned in April 2012. After a brief dry lot weaning period, the bulls ran on fescue pasture and free choice mineral during the Spring and Summer. Yearling weight, frame score, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound data were taken on 9/10/12. It would have been easy to step up the energy in the diet and add 300 pounds to the yearling weights, but we feel this would have had a negative impact on the bulls’ longevity and chose the slower growing forage development. Since that date, the bulls have been on limited pasture with a TMR haylage based ration to maintain condition. Breeding Soundness Exams were performed on February 12, 2013 and the scrotal measurements printed in this catalog are from that date. These bulls have the right condition (fit and trim) and age to service cows immediately.

1BWJ BARMAID 54P (BFCK Cherokee Cnyn 4912 x Beckton Barmaid M554 CH) 54P is a unique breeding piece that we have been fortunate to breed and own at Red Hill. 54P is a daughter of our foundation dam, Beckton Barmaid M554 – a cow very familiar to followers of the Red Hill Red Angus breeding program. Not only does 54P reproduce and milk with the best, but it is her natural thickness, massive rib, ability to flesh on limited resources and perfect disposition that makes her great.

She does so many things well, but the one trait that sets 54P apart is her hair coat. A short, thin hair coat is essential when cattlemen are looking for cattle that will thrive on endophyte-infected fescue. Additionally, 54P transmits this short, thin hair coat to her progeny as well as any Red Angus cow at Red Hill.

We have used four sons of 54P in our program (101S, 126T, 105U, and 4X) and each is having an impact with daughters in our herd. She has produced sons that sold to Wall, Nolin, and Weber, IA (101S), Hard Rock Beef, NC (126T), Bent Tree Farms, AL (105U), Raymond and Russell Neill, MO (106U), Steven Lyon, KY (110U), Buffalo Creek Red Angus, WY (1W), Isom Brothers, KY (7X), Johnny and Brenda Coley, TN (6X), and Russ Diedrichsen, NE (118X). Additionally, 54P has produced top heifers that are now working in herds in OH, MO, WY, KS, AL and WA. The 2013 sale features 54P and her progeny. There are nine bulls selling by three different sires—Red Hill B571 Julian 84S, BUF CRK The Right Kind U199, and GW Red Coat 099TS. Progeny from 54P in the 2013 sale include both top-end Red Angus as well as SimAngus genetics - another example of her genetic prepotency. The granddam of 142Y, 18S, was the cow we gave Ty to start his herd. His maternal grandsire is one of the most under used bulls in our program. 126T sold to Ronnie Holman, NC, and when we saw him last spring we were in awe. Red Hill SimAngus Bulls Since 1996, the American Simmental Association (ASA) has conducted an extensive progeny evaluation program. This program has identified the superior calving ease and carcass genetics in the breed. The Simmental breed was also the first breed involved in the University of Illinois progeny test where complete gain, feed efficiency, and carcass data has been accumulated. Quite simply, the Simmental breed has been the industry leader in sire progeny evaluation. The Simmental genetic evaluation is solely based on data from herds involved in Total Herd Enrollment (THE). Because of the superior growth rate and muscling of Simmental cattle, the breed is a natural complement to Red and Black Angus genetics.

Red Hill SimAngus 18-Month Old Bulls

The Simmental bull management has been identical to that of the Red Angus bulls – as all the bulls ran in the same pastures and were fed from the same troughs. Red Hill Red Angus Spring Yearling Bulls

The bulls were developed on a high-roughage haylage based ration with a goal of the bulls gaining 2.25 pounds per day. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and height measurements were taken on January 18, 2013. Scrotal measurements and BSEs were performed by Dr. Chad Shaw on February 12, 2013. The scrotal measurements printed are actual measurements from February 12, 2013. Many of these bulls have grown 1 to 2 centimeters since their January yearling measurements.

46W is a unique bull for siring cattle that have a good look, and for our fescue customers, these cattle have the best hair we have found. Lot 24 and Lot 25 are both excellent examples of 46W. If these bulls were to not sell we would use either or both on our cows. The paternal grandam, 45S, is a 17P daughter that is a model cow for our program. The uniqueness of this bull is he is a grandson of Marigold 1230, a matriarch in the Buffalo Creek program producing until she was 18 years old.

“A model cow in every sense of the word!” Gini Chase, Buffalo Creek Red Angus We first became acquainted with P154 when we purchased her son, BUF CRK Nice’n Easy T189, in the 2008 Buffalo Creek sale. While at the 2008 sale we found P154 in the large pastures, and after seeing her we knew we wanted to bring her son to Kentucky/Tennessee. Two years later we attended the Buffalo Creek Dispersal and once again we found P154 to be a standout.

P154’s son, BUF CRK Nice’n Easy T189, is one of our most popular herd sires. He has seen more use in our program in the last two breeding seasons than any other sire. T189 is unparalleled in his thickness and rib shape, moderate stature, and his short slick hair coat which is so important to our fescue country customers. P154’s first natural calf at Red Hill was an April 2011 born bull sired by BUF CRK Lancer R017. He is now owned with the Calvo Family, Bassett, NE. P154 posts impressive progeny ratios (5/94 BW, 5/104 WW, 5/102 YW, 4/94 %IMF, 4/106 REA) and does this with a calm disposition and balanced udder. P154’s production record comes as no surprise as her dam was one of the top producers at Buffalo Creek. 9005, dam of P154, posted the following ratios 10/114 BW, 10/105 WW and 10/106 YW. P154 is our ideal cow to picture and also our ideal cow on paper. She does the things we believe Red Angus cattle should do—excel in calving ease, moderate growth and mature size, be top of the line in the profit driving traits of HPG, CEM, and STAY and while posting average carcass traits.

As we studied the data and pedigrees of the cows in the Buffalo Creek Dispersal, we found M172 to offer topͲend percentiles hard to match. She did not disappoint us when we found her. M172 is a very good footed, long striding cow that is moderate sized and has a sound udder.

M172 has an amazing set of production ratios—8/83 BW, 7/103 WW, 6/101 YW, 6/117 %IMF, and 6/106 REA. There is no cow in the Red Angus database that combines CED, BW, ME, CEM, STAY and MARB as well as M172.

M172 will be eleven later this spring. But when observing her in the field, she still has a youthful appearance and does not show her age. We have four daughters of M172 by 84S on the ground that look very promising.

M172 sells exposed to BUF CRK Nice’n Easy T189. Pregnancy ultrasound data will be available before the sale.

**SPECIAL NOTE** It is with great reservation that we offer these two outstanding cows for sale. We have always committed ourselves to offering some of our best in our annual March sale. With the offering of these two proven cows and an outstanding lineup of heifers, we feel we are offering the best we have. We can only part with these females because of the success we have had with them as donor cows. Each cow has been flushed three times since their arrival at Red Hill Farms (June 2011, Nov 2011 and Dec 2012). P154 produced a total of 32 embryos and M172 produced a total of 28 embryos in their three flushes. Both cows have fall born heifer calves nursing, and they will be retained by Red Hill Farms. The calves will be weaned after the sale. Bulls from these two cows will be top end bulls in future Red Hill Farms sales and their daughters will surely have a lasting impact on our herd.

We fully understand the risk associated with these aged cows; however, we believe these cows to be in great shape physically and reproductively. We will give the buyer the option to pay one half the purchase price and leave the cows at Red Hill. Red Hill will get any future natural calves, and we will split the embryo work (expenses and embryos) and the salvage value 50/50. We offer this option to share the risk on these cows if it might interest the buyer. Offer limited to no more than three flushes in two years. Red Hill Red Angus Open Heifers We have grown the heifers very slowly (approximately 1.0 lb. ADG from weaning to yearling). We have learned that overfeeding replacement heifers is a waste of money and resources. Red Hill Farms yearling heifers have been wintered on a haylage based ration. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and yearling height measurements were taken on January 16, 2012. Since late February, we have increased the nutrition on these heifers. We plan to breed in mid April; and therefore, we intend for these heifers to gain weight and body condition prior to breeding. We are excited to offer this group of heifers; however, if they do not sell we intend on keeping each one in our herd.

These heifers are cycling and ready to breed.

Red Hill SimAngus Open Heifers We have grown the heifers very slowly (approximately 1.0 lb. ADG from weaning to yearling). We have learned that overfeeding replacement heifers is a waste of money and resources. Red Hill Farms yearling heifers have been wintered on a haylage based ration. Yearling weights, ultrasound data, and yearling height measurements were taken on January 18, 2013. Since late February, we have increased the nutrition on these heifers. We plan to breed in mid April; and therefore, we intend for these heifers to gain weight and body condition prior to breeding. We are excited to offer this group of heifers; however, if they do not sell we intend on keeping each one in our herd. These heifers are cycling and ready to breed.

Managing Yearling Bulls In a progressive purebred herd, the young yearling bulls usually represent the most advanced genetics available to the commercial industry. If appropriately managed, these yearling bulls can be used at the age of 14-15 months with excellent results. The Red Hill herd has been developed from herds that have been successfully using yearling bulls for many generations. Yearling bulls are also used extensively in the Red Hill Farms breeding program. We have had no difficulty with yearling bulls maintaining appropriate body condition during the first breeding season; however, we use the bulls for only a 45-60-day breeding season.

The yearlings in this sale have been developed to optimize growth rate, skeletal development, and sexual maturity. It has been our goal to give the bulls an opportunity to express their growth potential along with genetic differences for intramuscular fat and ribeye area.

Even though the bulls are not as fat as if they had been developed on a higher energy ration, they are still in excellent body condition with some extra fat that is likely to be lost during the first breeding season. Yearling bulls may be mated to cows or heifers, but we prefer to use them on only 15-25 females during the first breeding season.

At 14-17 months of age, bulls certainly are not mature in size, and, consequently, a portion of the nutrients consumed should be going toward growth in addition to being used for body maintenance and breeding activity. We recommend removing young bulls from the females after the breeding season to allow the bulls the opportunity to gain some of the condition they have lost and to continue growing at an optimal rate.

Yearling bulls may be used in multiple sire groups with other yearlings; however, we strongly discourage the use of yearlings in combination with older bulls in multiple sire settings. All young bulls should be observed at the beginning of the breeding season to determine that each bull is active and aggressive in seeking and mating females that are in heat. Even though young bulls have passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation, this does not ensure that bulls have appropriate libido and the ability to breed in a pasture setting.

Most of us don’t really believe that (statement above), yet the gravity of the decisions associated with selecting the next generation of seedstock may be greater than you first think. All of us consider the calves these bulls might sire and the value they should return to the ranch.

Most consider pricing bulls based on a projection of years of service, hopefully 4-8 years barring injury and the calf performance we might expect them to sire. If you don’t keep your own replacement heifers, this makes some sense. If, like most, you keep females, the long term effects of this year’s buying decisions on ranch profitability may not be quite as obvious until we break it down based on the long term maternal value traits we are purchasing.

Let’s assume your operation purchases 4 bulls this coming spring of 2013.

- First calves born in spring of 2014 - First daughters calving in spring of 2016 (First granddaughters calve in 2018) - With any luck 2 or more of these bulls are still breeding at age 7 (2019) - Last calves born sired by these bulls in 2020 - Last calf crop females have their first calves in 2022 (Their first daughters calve in 2024) - In 2023 a substantial share of the 2-7 year old cows are daughters of the bulls purchased 10 years before.

- In the year 2030 there are still a few 11 and 12 year old daughters in your herd sired by the 2012 purchased bulls.

- In the year 2030 the granddaughters and great granddaughters of the bulls purchased 17 years ago still make up a substantial portion of the genetics of your herd.

I know, most of us don’t like to think about the year 2030. Seems like the Bi-Centennial was just a few years ago (actually 38 years!). If however your plans are to keep or make the beef business an important part of your family’s livelihood as far out as 2030, which most of us do, the bulls you purchase this year will still be an important piece of the profits you enjoy or the challenges you are still working through nearly 20 years from now. Sire selection is that important, so use all the tools available to make the best decisions you can every time!

So, if you would like to see a snap-shot of your cow herd 10-20 years from now in 2030, you need only spend some time with the seedstock herd you purchase bulls from. With the exception of a few differences created by environment, what you see is where you are headed! The size, disposition, body condition, udders, feet, calving ease, fertility, longevity, etc of your future cow herd is right there to see. Not just the mature cows either, make sure you look at the 2 and 3 year olds too and consider the direction your source is moving. That is why it is so crucial to choose a seedstock source that is headed where you want and need to be.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Any changes from information of any kind in this catalog will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence.

BREEDING GUARANTEE All animals are guaranteed by the Seller to be breeders, with the exception of: -Animals shown by purchaser after sale. The breeding guarantees, if any, shall be such as agreed upon between Seller and Buyer.

- Gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of Buyer.

Bulls are guaranteed breeders if not allowed to run within the herd until at least 14 months of age. Any bull that either, (1) settles one-third or more of the healthy cows he serves, (2) is the sire of 20 or more animals, or (3) settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any six-month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 10b of “Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment,” this section) shall be considered a breeder. Any guarantees with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be by separate agreement between the Buyer and Seller.

DEFAULT In the event the Buyer defaults on payment, the Buyer shall be responsible for all costs, including attorney’s costs, incurred by Sale Management or Seller in connection with collecting, or attempting to collect, payment due.

OPTIONS & PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT - All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six months of the sale date or not later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, with the exception of claims involving defects of parentage.

- In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm/ranch of the Seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller shall be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months the Seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the Seller, at the option of the Buyer, shall replace the animal with another of equal value or credit in a future sale. The return of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expenses incurred for transporting an animal claimed to be a non-breeder shall be the responsibility of the Buyer. If the Seller proves the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the Buyer to take delivery of the animal and pay all expenses incurred for transportation.

- If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the Buyer may return the animal to the farm/ranch of the Seller prior to calving for a refund of the full purchase price or credit in a future sale, whichever is acceptable to the Buyer. It shall be the obligation of the Seller to bear any expense incurred for transportation.

SELLER’S SEMEN RIGHTS Any semen rights retained by the Seller must be announced from the auction box at the time of sale, if not already printed in the sale catalog.

RETAINED INTEREST Red Hill Farms retains a 1/2 semen interest in all bulls selling. We are selling 100% possession and 100% salvage or resale value. This gives Red Hill Farms the option to collect, use, and market semen from the bull and does not restrict the buyer from doing the same.

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the Buyer and Seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction.

PERSONAL LIABILITY All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and the Red Hill Farms, its employees, and all other persons connected with the management of the sale, assume no liability, legal or otherwise.

17P is the most dominant sire we have used at Red Hill Farms. No Red Angus bull compares in the ability to moderate frame, spread the data from birth to yearling, add thickness, and combine all of this with breed leading CEM and STAY. Even more impressive than 17P’s ability to sire outstanding performance is the consistency with which he sires moderate framed, thick, easy-fleshing cattle.

17P’s dam, Shady’s MS Marias 283, was one of the best cows in our herd - 8 calves Avg BW 81 pounds, 6 calves WWR 110, 4 calves YWR 113. In addition to being a very fertile female, 283 was large-volumed, heavy-muscled, and one of the most structurally correct mature cows at Red Hill. A strong attribute of 283 was her ability to thrive on typical fescue pastures--it certainly appears she may have had some genetic resistance to the fescue endophyte. 283 and her 2011 calf were killed by lightning in June 2011.

Many thanks to the Gerkins for their confidence in our program with the purchase of 17P. We continue to use 17P and his sons at Red Hill Farms and are thankful to the Gerkins for allowing us to bring 17P back to use naturally in our herd. 17P serviced many of our top cows for 2010 - 2013 calves.

Buffalo Creek Nice ‘N Easy T189 was our pick of the bulls in the November, 2008 Buffalo Creek Sale. We purchased T189 with our cooperator herd, Coyote Hills. T189 is sired by BUF CRK Medallion N328, a bull whose progeny have adapted and performed exceptionally well in the Coyote Hills herd in Kentucky.

T189’s dam is simply an outstanding Beckton Julian GG B571 daughter with an exceptional production record. Her progeny averages are 5 at 74 pound BW average, 5/104 WWR and 5/102 YWR for a MPPA of 103.2. Prior to the Buffalo Creek Sale, we were able to find P154 in one of the huge pastures at Buffalo Creek thriving on dry grass, and in respectable body condition for a young cow that had been so fertile and productive. She also had small teats and an apparent problem free udder. Two years later when we attended the Buffalo Creek dispersal, we purchased P154. We believe she was the best cow offered in the sale for the type of cattle we like. T189’s maternal granddam, 9005, had averages of 105 WR, 106 YR and a MPPA of 104.6 on 10 natural calves before going into the Buffalo Creek Transplant program. T189 puts together an unusually strong combination of convenience and cow efficiency traits on both sides of his pedigree.

T189 is also outstanding from a phenotypic standpoint. He is a very moderate framed, structurally correct bull with tremendous width of chest, spring of rib and body volume. Out in the pasture with a large group of cows here in KY, T189 exhibits excellent overall balance as he moves over the hills. We like the way that T189 has performed on fescue since coming to Kentucky, maintaining or gaining body condition while running with cows during the breeding season.

To add to T189’s uniqueness, watch his video. This video was taken in early February 2013 when he was removed from 40 Fall calving cows. His ability to get the cows bred and maintain excellent flesh is unique. We have learned the importance of short, slick-haired cattle which thrive on fescue.

84S is an easy calving, low maintenance bull that has a perfect disposition and is very slick haired. This bull is ideal for producing females suitable for the heat and humidity of the South. The data indicates his daughters will breed regularly, calve easily, and have longevity. His first sons sold March 20, 2010 in our annual sale and were very well received. Eight 84S sired bred heifers averaged $3,937 in the Buffalo Creek dispersal sale and the 84S sons in the December, 2011 Buffalo Creek sale averaged $1,000 more than any other sire group. 84S will continue to be a high-use sire at Red Hill Farms.

His sire, 701T, has impressed us since we saw him as a yearling. 645W is exceptional in his fleshing ability, center body width, and body volume. 645W is a unique combination of outstanding performance in a moderateframed bull (5.5 YrFr). 645W comes from a cow family familiar to us at Red Hill Farms - his paternal granddam. 363, is a donor here and his maternal granddam, 717F, is also the dam of Red Hill Farms donor, GW Miss Lucky Roll 709L. 645W is triple-bred to the great 407D cow.

645W has large testicles, excellent semen, and he is a very aggressive breeder.

Wally impressed us with his exceptional performance ratios and the phenotype we desire. Tom Hook described Wally as “one of the heaviest muscled and soundest structured with a quiet disposition, great appetite, and boasts herd changing carcass and index profile.” We have been impressed by Shear Force’s calving ease when used at Red Hill Farms. Couple this with the high accuracy carcass genetics of Future Direction, and we were pleased to add Wally to the Red Simmental mix at Red Hill Farms.

106W has been tested in the ASA Carcass Merit Program.

106W’s greatest contribution may be his daughters. His first daughters’ calved at Red Hill in the Spring of 2013. They have excellent udders and mothering skills. Additionally, his daughters are moderate-sized and easy fleshing, and as the data indicates, very docile.

106W’s cow family was very well received in the 2013 Hook’s Bred for Balance sale.

106W’s full sister was the top selling cow at $20,000. She also was the dam of the top selling bull, Lot 23 at $15,000. Additionally, Wally 106W’s nine-year old dam sold for $7,500.

Select for CED EPD as the most meaningful predictor of calving ease.

Selling calves or yearlings?

Heavier pay weights may be achieved by selecting higher WW EPDs, but…make sure heavier is what you want. Heavier weaning weights mean heavier pay weights for calf feds. However, for those who background their calves, too much weaning weight could translate into yearlings that are too heavy when they enter the feed yard, and finish too heavy. Overshooting performance goals can be just as detrimental as falling short.

Enhance your reputation – improve traits that impact feeder profits, such as carcass traits and postͲweaning gain (YW).

Retaining Ownership?

Docile and fast starting, Red Angus are easy to start on feed and keep on feed.

Balance YW EPD of potential bulls with the existing cow herd to pinpoint needed improvement for postͲweaning gains.
