Member Spotlight - DTE Energy Background on DTE Energy A Detroit-based diversified energy company, DTE Energy has been powering Redford, along with numerous Michigan homes and businesses for more than a century. Through our commitment to providing the area with safe, reliable and affordable energy, we have become deeply engrained in the Redford community. Aiming to be a force for growth and prosperity in Redford, DTE and our thousands of employees have worked to serve, support and uplift the community through philanthropy, volunteerism and economic progress work. Over the years, we have raised funds for local charities and nonprofits, sponsored community events as well as saving businesses and residents money through energy efficiency programs and much more. How many years have you been in business? DTE Energy was established in 1996 when Detroit Edison and Michigan Consolidated Gas merged. Our gas utility has served the community since 1849, and Detroit Edison was established in 1903. What brought you to the area and what keeps you here? DTE Energy was started right here in metro Detroit. We’re rooted in our communities — they’re our home and always will be. We love the people here and are deeply committed to service excellence. We listen and continuously improve our products and services to fulfill the needs of our customers because, to us, they’re more than customers — they’re our friends, family and neighbors. What are your business goals? At DTE Energy, our goal is simple: to improve lives with energy. We do that through providing safe, reliable, affordable and cleaner energy to our customers and investing in the communities we serve, like Redford.
Over the next few years, we’re investing more than $1.3 billion in electric infrastructure upgrades, including replacing power poles and overhead equipment, building new substations and upgrading existing substations to ensure our customers have the reliable energy they deserve. Since summer 2021, we’ve made upgrades to more than 500 circuits across our service territory, totaling more than 1,000 miles of infrastructure. Furthermore, we’ve invested an additional $90 million to accelerate trimming trees along our overhead power lines. In the first half of 2022 alone, we’ve trimmed more than 2,300 miles of trees. In areas where tree trimming is complete, our customers experience a 72% improvement in reliability. Additionally, creating a cleaner, healthier environment where we can all live and thrive is among our top priorities. DTE has set a bold goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This goal is a continuation of our existing commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2040. As Michigan’s largest investor in renewable energy, we have driven investments of $2.8 billion in wind farms and solar arrays since 2009, providing enough clean energy to power 700,000 homes. While we work to make our environmental footprint cleaner and more sustainable, we also partner with nonprofits across the state to improve the natural beauty that can be found all around us.
