A Brief History

Welcome to the 2012 Jason Collection

Inspired by a Christmas gift in 1961, Jim and Jean Sunderland started manufacturing placemats by hand from Jim’s parents’ laundry in 1962. Featuring iconic New Zealand scenes, the placemats grew in sales and popularity.

In 1964 Jim and Jean moved to their first factory in Span Farm, Glendene, and with the aid of distributor H.M Fogarty, saw their placemats sold New Zealand wide. By 1970, the factory was producing 5000 placemats per day, helped by Jim’s engineering know-how.

Offering superior dining accessories and table protection solutions, leading by design and family owned Jason Products has been built on offering innovative, beautiful and practical products to enhance your dining style.

From traditional to contemporary, subtle to dramatic – the Jason Collection is an eclectic mix of designs created with every style and taste in mind.

Export sales to Australia commenced in 1973, and in 1980 Jason moved to a purpose-built factory in Culperry Rd, Glendene. The company experienced rapid growth, and on the back of a tourist boom in Australia, expanded its export markets in Scandinavia, Canada, Europe, and the United States.

Innovation played a significant part in this expansion as Jason launched its highly-acclaimed Designer Collection placemats, leading the world in applying contemporary design themes to placemats as part of the modern lifestyle.

By the mid 1990s, Jason placemats were exported to over 35 countries worldwide as the company diversified into trays, crockery, napery, and giftware as part of its Smashing Concepts range. Half a century on, Jason Products, still headed by the Sunderland family, continues to supply New Zealand and the world with design-led tableware.

934 Shell Walk – Size: 2, 4, 6 THE DELICATELY COLORED AND INTRICATELY DETAILED SHELLS of the Shell Walk pattern were inspired by an 18th-century naturalist’s exquisite watercolor catalog of New World shells, now in the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation collection of antique prints. Their timeless natural beauty will enhance a beach house or any meal where you want to relax and hear the rhythm of the waves as a complement to good food and pleasant company.

668 Charlotte – Size: 2, 4, 6 the charlotte design was inspired by the double variegated rose illustrated in John Edwards’ 1770 work British Herbal, a rare book in the collections of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The pattern is named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, British King during the American Revolution. The Royal Family lived much of the year at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew near London.

They enthusiastically supported botanists, landscape designers, explorers and naturalists who expanded understanding of the natural world during the age of enlightenment.

435 Meadow Fern – Size: 2, 4, 6 – Not available in the UK CELEBRATE YOUR FAVORITE GARDEN year-round with these beautiful, fresh designs inspired by antique botanical illustrations in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s rare books collection. 191 Lightfoot House – Size: 2, 4, 6 – Not available in the UK THIS ELEGANT DESIGN is adapted from a hand-painted wallpaper made in China for export to the West. Peonies and mums, birds in flight, and hanging baskets create an exotic look sought by an ever expanding market in Europe and America in the 18th Century.

Both a museum of plants and a leading center of botanical research, The New York Botanical Garden is one of the most distinguished botanical gardens in the world. The Garden’s LuEsther T. Mertz Library, established in 1899, houses an extensive collection of botanical works dating from the 12th century to the present.

189 Garden Images™ – Size: 2, 4, 6 WORLD EXPLORATION AND NATURAL DISCOVERIES had a profound effect on individuals in the 18th Century. Naturalists in the New World recorded flora and fauna and sent botanical illustrations and even specimens back to England. The dominant influence in this design is an important watercolor painting of a magnolia painted by Georg Ehret in 1737. Ehret is widely regarded as the most important botanical illustrator of the 18th Century, when curiosity and interest in the natural world led to the incorporation of designs from flora and fauna in silver, furniture, prints, textiles, and other objects known as the “decorative arts.” The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has an extensive collection of the decorative arts that reflect this great interest in nature.

lap trays Lap trays are an attractive item with multiple uses. They are a versatile and stylish product, but ultimately designed with function in mind.

The cushion moulds itself to the knees and the design base provides a convenient and stable surface for a multitude of uses: Hobbies, letter-writing, laptop use and meals. Ideal for all ages, perfect for the bed-ridden and wheelchair-bound but most people will appreciate their ease of use for TV dining.

Heat-resistant, easy clean surface, simply wipe with damp cloth.

Available in twenty four designs. The cushion is filled with flame-retardant beads & covered in dark brown or dark gold hard-wearing fabric. The fabric covering is 80% polyester, 20% cotton. Each lap tray is delivered in a poly-bag with removable protective corners. Each lap tray is easy to merchandise and has a removable oval label at top the left of each design, explaining its use and function.
