Introduzione

A natural disaster like the earthquake that struck L’Aquila ten years ago, apart from the dramatic physical changes it caused in the rural and urban landscape of our beloved land, is an event that profoundly disturbs the relationship between human beings and their natural environment. This physical vulnerability has provoked a deep psychological, social and cultural vulnerability in the people of Abruzzo. An entire generation watched their dreams collapse in a matter of seconds. The social fabric has unraveled, and every social, cultural and economic point of reference has disappeared.

Un disastro naturale, come quello del sisma che ha colpito la città dell’Aquila dieci anni fa, al di là dei grandi cambiamenti oggettivi che ha provocato nella morfologia territoriale e urbanistica del nostro amato territorio, è stato un evento che ha sconvolto profondamente la relazione tra l’essere umano e il suo ambiente naturale. La vulnerabilità delle cose ha provocato una vulnerabilità profonda psicologica, sociale e culturale negli abruzzesi. Un ‘intera generazione ha visto crollare in pochissimi secondi i propri sogni. Il tessuto sociale si è disgregato e sono venuti a mancare tutti i punti di riferimento, sociali, culturali ed economici.

But nothing was irrevocably lost: ten years later and after only two years of reconstruction the first public building has reopened: the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, seat of the highest institution of the Region of Abruzzo, the Regional Council.

Nulla è stato perduto, dopo dieci anni e in soli due anni di ricostruzione è stato riaperto il primo edificio pubblico, il Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, sede della più alta istituzione della regione Abruzzo, il Consiglio regionale.

The historical memory of the building has been preserved and highlighted and its institutional significance strengthened, and technological innovation has been applied to the art of restoration and preservation. This is all now at the disposal of our citizens, gifted to them in its new guise as a meeting place - as a place of culture, wisdom and beauty.

La memoria storica dell’edificio è stata mantenuta e valorizzata, la valenza istituzionale rafforzata e l’innovazione tecnologia è stata applicata all’arte del restauro e della conservazione. Tutto questo, adesso, è a disposizione dei cittadini, ed è stato donato in una nuova veste quella di luogo di aggregazione, di cultura, di sapienza e di bellezza.

La città dell’Aquila sta risorgendo più bella e più forte anche grazie alla sensibilità di persone che amano l’arte, che la raccontano, e che la adoperano per scopi sociali come la critica d’arte Roberta Semeraro che con il suo progetto “Nove artisti per l’Aquila” ha sensibilizzato artisti di fama internazionale a donare le proprie opere alla città contribuendo ad accrescere la già forte vocazione culturale e artistica della città dell’Aquila.

The city of L’Aquila is being reborn stronger and more beautiful than ever, thanks also to the sensitive awareness of people who love the arts, tell their stories, and use them for the benefit of society. One of those people is the art critic Roberta Semeraro, whose initiative Nine Artists for Reconstruction has inspired internationally renowned artists to donate their works to the city, helping to expand L’Aquila’s already formidable artistic and cultural vocation.

The British-American artist Linda Karshan has donated several of her exquisite and important works to the library of the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, including “The Library for L’Aquila,” a tower of books of great symbolic and cultural significance.

Symbolic because books are the building blocks of knowledge, without which we could have no historical memory, liberty, understanding, solidarity or wisdom. Cultural because this year, when International Book Day will be celebrated in Matera, the European Capital of Culture, libraries are rediscovering their role as guardian sentinels of culture, the promotion of literature, and of knowledge. Libraries can conceal hidden treasures, like the extraordinarily rare and exceptional manuscript by Galileo Galilei rediscovered in the library of the Diocese of Avezzano.

L’artista anglo americana Linda Karshan ha donato alla biblioteca del Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, alcune delle sue bellissime e importanti opere tra cui “la Biblioteca per l’Aquila”, una torre di libri dal grande valore simbolico e culturale. Simbolico perché i libri sono i mattoni della conoscenza senza la quale non c’è memoria storica, non c’è libertà, comprensione, solidarietà e sapienza.

Culturale perché nell’anno in cui si celebra la Giornata Mondiale del libro a Matera, capitale della cultura, le biblioteche riscoprono il loro ruolo di presidi culturali, di promozione del libro e della conoscenza. Le biblioteche possono celare tesori nascosti, come quello del rarissimo ed eccezionale ritrovamento dell’antico testo di Galileo Galilei ritrovato all’interno della biblioteca della Diocesi di Avezzano.

It is a great honor, for L’Aquila and for all Abruzzo, to welcome these artists and works of such great human, social and cultural value.

Dopo circa dieci anni dal terremoto, grazie ai lavori di restauro sapientemente condotti dalla Soprintendenza per l’Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città dell’Aquila e i Comuni del Cratere, a progetti nazionali e internazionali di cooperazione e solidarietà come Nove artisti per la ricostruzione, e non ultimo all’impegno delle istituzioni del territorio e dei suoi cittadini, L’Aquila sta rinascendo dalla macerie come una nuova città che sente l’esigenza di ripopolare i luoghi e farli rivivere, proiettandoli verso il futuro.

Almost ten years after the Italian city of L’Aquila and its surrounding towns were struck by a devastating earthquake, they are being reborn from the ruins. Careful rebuilding and restoration work carried out by the Office of Archaeological, Artistic and Environmental Heritage of L’Aquila and the Municipalities of the Impact Zone, national and international collaborations and solidarity initiatives including Nove artisti per la ricostruzione (Nine Artists for Reconstruction), and not least the dedication of the region’s citizens and institutions have transformed L’Aquila into a city reborn. Now it seeks to launch itself into the future, repopulating its abandoned spaces and bringing life back into the city.

Dall’incontro avvenuto a novembre 2018 con la delegazione dell’Aquila all’Ateneo Veneto di Venezia, in occasione della conferenza VeneziaL’Aquila, un ponte culturale di solidarietà e della presentazione del libro Ricostruire con l’arte, è emersa l’esigenza da parte del comitato ANCE giovani L’Aquila, di attirare l’attenzione del pubblico nazionale ed internazionale, sui prestigiosi Atenei della città con il fine di riportarli ad essere quegli importanti centri di studi che erano prima del sisma.

In November of 2018, a delegation from L’Aquila traveled to Venice for an event at the Ateneo Veneto on the occasion of the conference Venice-L’Aquila: A Cultural Bridge of Solidarity and the presentation of the book Rebuilding with Art. It was there that the committee from the L’Aquila branch of ANCE Giovani (the Italian National Association of Young Contractors and Builders) identified the need for L’Aquila to bring both national and international attention to its own prestigious universities, restoring the reputation as important centers of research and study that they enjoyed before the earthquake.

Come risposta concreta a questa necessità e come ideale completamento del teatro all’aperto di Beverly Pepper per Parco del Sole, il progetto Nove artisti per la ricostruzione ha focalizzato la sua attenzione sull’artista anglo americana Linda Karshan il cui lavoro, per il suo alto profilo culturale, è seguito dalle accademie e dai musei più accreditati d’Europa tra i quali il British Museum di Londra.

As both a concrete response to that need and an ideal complement to Beverly Pepper’s open-air theatrical projects created for the Parco del Sole, the Nine Artists for Reconstruction initiative has focused its attention on the British-American artist Linda Karshan, whose exceptional cultural reputation has led her work to be closely followed by the most prestigious museums and academies in Europe, including the British Museum in London.

Karshan quest’anno è stata ospite con la mostra intitolata Art, Architecture and Sacred Geometry in Conversation , nell’Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore a Venezia durante la Biennale di Architettura 2018. Il pensiero dell’artista s’ispira alla filosofia greca e in particolare a Platone, quando nel Timaiòs rapporta il mondo (in ogni manifestazione), all’ordine numerico della matematica.

In 2018, Karshan’s exhibit Art, Architecture and Sacred Geometry in Conversation was displayed at the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice for the Architecture Biennale. The artist was inspired by Greek philosophy - particularly Plato, whose Timaeus connects the world in all its manifestations to the orderly numerical harmony of mathematics.

Karshan si è distinta nel panorama dell’arte grazie al suo personale e originale linguaggio artistico elaborato con una tecnica universale, nella quale il disegno diventa un atto scultoreo, che si ottiene con disciplina, esercizio e profonda concentrazione contando il ritmo del proprio respiro e in totale equilibrio con il corpo. Come è stato evidenziato nella mostra di San Giorgio Maggiore, i suoi

expressed through a universal technique, in which drawing becomes an act of sculpture achieved through discipline, practice and profound concentration, observing the rhythms of her breath and in complete balance with her body. Her exhibition at San Giorgio Maggiore emphasized the extreme precision and natural simplicity of her drawings, an elegance that strongly recalls the illuminations of sacred manuscripts painted by medieval scribes, or the geometric motifs carved by skilled artisans found in Gothic architecture.

Building on the premise that the Mind that gives form to the universe is manifest in all that exists and most of all in the proportions of the human body (Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man), the artist reveals the pure essence of things in her work.

Per raggiungere questa sorta di trance tecnico, è necessario che la mente sia allerta per poter cogliere l’intuizione esatta del disegno suggerita dal ritmo del respiro e dall’equilibrio del corpo.

Partendo dal presupposto che la mente ordinatrice del mondo si manifesta in tutte le cose ed in primis nelle proporzioni del corpo umano (l’uomo vitruviano di Leonardo), l’artista rivela nei suoi disegni l’essenza pura delle cose.

In questo caso si tratta più di un equilibrio psicofisico, poiché è un bilanciamento tra fattori endogeni ed esogeni all’organismo. Come insegna Karshan, l’equilibrio è un concetto in continuo divenire: Galeno, medico e filosofo noto anche per aver prestato le sue cure all’imperatore Marco Aurelio, fu il primo ad affermare che il corpo umano non è mai perfettamente statico tant’è che è soggetto continuamente a piccoli tremori.

To reach this kind of technical trance state, the mind must be fully alert to capture every precise intuition suggested for the drawing through the rhythm of the breath and the balance of the body. In this case it is more of a psychophysical equilibrium, a balancing of factors endogenic and exogenic to the organism. As Karshan shows us, balance is a concept in constant flux: Galen, the physician and philosopher best known for having treated the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, was the first to say that the human body is never perfectly still, but rather is subject to constant small vibrations.

Karshan con una piccola coreografia di passi che chiama appunto la sua coreografia interna, in quanto segue il ritmo del suo respiro, solleva la gamba sinistra appoggiandosi al tavolo da disegno sulla stessa mano sinistra, e allungando il braccio destro in avanti disegna tenendo la matita in asse alla mano come se fosse un suo prolungamento.

Una volta tracciato il segno, dall’alto del foglio verso il basso, si ferma per un breve intervallo e rimarca il segno dal basso verso l’alto o gira il foglio in senso antiorario e contando nuovamente i suoi respiri, ripete i movimenti descritti.

Kandinskij affermava che le linee non sono altro che le proiezioni dinamiche di punti messi in moto da differenti forze e in diverse direzioni.

Karshan performs a short sequence of steps she calls her “inner choreography”: following the rhythm of her breath, she raises her left leg and leans on her drawing table with her left arm.

Reaching out with her right arm extended, she draws, her pencil held in line with her hand.

Once a line is drawn from the top of the paper towards the bottom, she pauses briefly and then redraws the line over from bottom to top, or turns the paper counterclockwise and, again following her breath, repeats her sequence of movements. Kandinsky said that “the [...]line is the track made by a moving point; that is, its product. It is created by movement.”’

I modelli di segni e le forme geometriche tracciate da Karshan, diventano le traiettorie delle forze fisiche e psichiche controllate da uno strumento naturale di misurazione, che è appunto il suo corpo.

The line drawings and geometric forms traced by Karshan become the trajectories of points set in motion by both physical and psychological forces, harnessed by a natural measuring instrument – her body itself.

In the 1990s, working in total silence in her London studio, Karshan discovered that the sound produced by her pencil as it moved across the paper helped her with her drawing process, giving her another indication to follow along with the rhythm of her breath. It’s no coincidence that Joseph Beuys exhorted: “Listen; just listen. Listening to the sound is a sculptural act. The ear is the genuine sense of sculpture.”

Lavorando nell’assoluto silenzio del suo studio di Londra, Karshan intorno agli anni ‘90 scoprì che il suono prodotto dal movimento della matita che scorreva sul foglio, l’aiutava nell’esecuzione del disegno dandole un’ulteriore traccia rispetto al ritmo della respirazione. Non a caso Joseph Beuys esortava ad ascoltare e basta, poiché “l’ascolto del suono è un atto scultoreo. L’orecchio è il vero senso della scultura.”

In 2008 filmmaker Candida Richardson, interested in the origins of abstract drawing and the ways in which a drawing takes shape by allowing the artist’s subconscious mind to take over, filmed Movements And Their Images in Linda Karshan’s studio, recording the artist as she drew. Karshan and Richardson then decided to collaborate on SOUNDINGS (Cat. #2-7) (inspiration for the title came as a suggested translation for Michel Eyquem de Montaigne’s Essais, a large and wide-ranging collection of the author’s thoughts, written without following a pre-established structure.)

Nel 2008 la film maker Candida Richardson interessata alla genesi del disegno astratto e a come il disegno astratto si forma permettendo alla mente inconscia dell’artista di prendere il sopravvento, realizzò nello studio di Karshan il film Movements and Their Images dove riprendeva l’artista mentre disegnava. Fu allora che Linda e Candida decisero di sperimentare insieme SOUNDINGS (Cat. #2-7) (che prende ispirazione per il titolo dall’opera Essais di Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, un’ampia raccolta di brani di varia estensione, scritti senza seguire un progetto prestabilito).

A partire dal 10 ottobre 2014 Richardson con apparecchi acustici molto sofisticati, registrò nello studio dell’artista l’esecuzione di sei disegni.

Linda Karshan ricorda : “In quel giorno le linee da tracciare erano prima molto lunghe, poi più corte, poi brevi. Queste ultime erano come punteggiate, disegnate con vigore e anche con grande velocità. Così la varietà di linee ha dato consistenza al pezzo, combinato con i passi e la porta del mio studio che sbatteva. Questi sei disegni hanno dato origine a sondaggi. I primi due erano preludi; quindi stabilivano la griglia. Il numero 3 fu quello, completamente disegnato in quello stesso giorno mentre gli stadi successivi venivano fissati per il 4, 5 e 6. Questi ultimi furono sviluppati i giorni successivi, progredendo secondo i turni. I turni seguirono, come per necessità; ¼ cerchio, giro, ¼ cerchio giro, ¼ cerchio giro, ¼ cerchio, giro. Infine furono 8 archi di quarto e 32 archi per turno.”

Starting on October 10, 2014, using highly sophisticated sound equipment, Richardson recorded the artist in her studio as she created six drawings. Linda Karshan recalls: “On this day…the lines to be drawn were first very long, then shorter, then finally brief. These last were as if PUNCTUATED, drawn with vigor and also great speed. Thus the variety of lines gave TEXTURE to the piece, combined with the SOUNDS of my work – the drawing of the lines, FOOTFALLS or FOOT-TAPPING; the SWISHING round of the paper and the SLAM of the studio door. These sounds, taken together, are an account of the work. Six drawings resulted from SOUNDINGS. The first two were ‘preludes’; they established the GRID. Number 3 was The one, fully drawn on THE DAY, while the ‘stages were set’ for 4, 5 + 6. These last were fleshed out over four successive days, progressing, as they would, towards the ‘rounds.’

The ‘rounds’ followed, as if by necessity; ¼ circle, turn; ¼ circle, turn; ¼ circle, turn; ¼ circle, turn: four ¼ circle GROUPS; 8 arcs per quarter: 32 arcs per round.”

Ascoltando la registrazione di questi suoni si ha la rappresentazione plastica di questa speciale coreografia, nella quale la matita danza condotta nei suoi passi dall’artista.

Listening to the recording of these sounds, the mind’s eye perceives a vivid, almost threedimensional representation of this unique choreography in which the pencil dances across the page, led through its steps by the artist.

THE GREEK CROSS FOR L’AQUILA

LA CROCE GRECA PER L’AQUILA

The Greek cross frequently appears among the geometric figures in Karshan’s drawings, often seen as an archetypal representation of the balance between heaven and earth in the cosmic sphere. The piece the artist has chosen to dedicate to the city of L’Aquila and its surroundings is that very image.

Nelle figure geometriche dei disegni di Karshan, compare ripetutamente la croce greca come forma archetipo, dell’equilibrio tra la terra e il cielo nel cerchio cosmico. Ed è proprio questo disegno che l’artista ha voluto dedicare alla città dell’Aquila e al suo territorio.

The details of Karshan’s Greek Cross (The Crux Quadrata) for L’Aquila (Cat. #1) recall not only the Gothic façade of the church of Santa Maria in Collemaggio, but also the legends of the Knights Templar linked to that splendid basilica.

Il disegno della Croce Greca (Crux Quadrata) per L’Aquila (Cat. #1) rimanda non solo alla decorazione della facciata gotica di Santa Maria a Collemaggio, ma anche alla leggendaria tradizione dei cavalieri templari alla quale è legata la splendida Basilica.

In 2017, Mattias Bärmann described the meaning of the Greek cross in correspondence with Karshan: “It is the balanced evocation of the relationship between heaven and earth, male and female, the human being and God, the passage of time and the present moment. Architecturally it focuses on the center, the opposite of the nave basilica. It connects the four cardinal directions and represents the four seasons. If you trace around it, a circle appears. It is the simplest and most ancient depiction of the cross, the cross of early Christianity, Eastern Christianity and the Knights Templar. The crux quadrata. Its shape is devoid of spirit, alignment, teleology or progress: it is simply there, it simply is what it is.”

Nel 2017, Mattias Bärmann ha descritto il significato della croce Greca in rapporto a LK: “È l’evocazione equilibrata del rapporto tra cielo e terra, maschio e femmina, esseri umani e Dio, tempo che procede e tempo momentaneo. Nell’architettura, è orientata al centro, all’opposto della basilica a navate.

Collega i quattro punti cardinali e rappresenta le quattro stagioni. Se circoscritta, ne emerge un cerchio. È la forma più antica e semplice della croce, la croce del primo cristianesimo, del cristianesimo orientale, la croce dei Templari. La crux quadrata. La sua forma è priva di anima, di allineamento, di teleologia, di progresso: è semplicemente lì, semplicemente ciò che è.”

THE TOWER OF BOOKS

LA TORRE DI LIBRI

Karshan has conceived a site-specific work for the library of the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo: a tower built of books. The piece is to be realized in collaboration with students from local universities, using books from the artist’s personal library and materials sourced from L’Aquila and the surrounding Abruzzo region. In this tower, which symbolizes areté (the attainment of wisdom), the books will be balanced precariously atop one another to illustrate the fragility of culture, which can collapse at any moment if not solidly rooted. But the artist shows that building with wisdom can shape the destiny of all humankind; most of all it must be constructed on a solid foundation, with materials of the highest quality and excellent technique. Thus, the artist has chosen to place texts that were the foundation of her artistic studies at the base of the tower: Modern European Civilization; Western Intellectual Thought; and L’Art Roman.

La scultura di libri a forma di torre che Linda Karshan ha ideato per la biblioteca di Palazzo dell’Emiciclo è un’opera site specific realizzata con l’aiuto degli studenti degli Atenei dell’Aquila, utilizzando materiali della library personale dell’artista e materiali di provenienza del territorio dell’Aquila e dell’Abruzzo. In questa torre che simboleggia l’areté (il raggiungimento della saggezza), i libri sono sovrapposti tra loro e in un precario equilibrio, per restituire quell’idea di fragilità della cultura che se non è ben fondata può crollare da un momento all’altro. Ma l’artista insegna che costruire con saggezza, può essere determinante per il destino di tutta l’umanità.

Innanzittutto bisogna avere solide basi, materiali di prima qualità e un’ottima tecnica. Ed è per questo che sceglie di mettere alla base della torre i testi che sono alla base dei suoi studi di artista: Modern European Civilization; Western Intellectual Thought; e L’Art Roman.

Finally, on top of the finished tower, the artist plans to place her Toluca iron meteorite from Xiquipilio in Mexico, next to a Morasko meteorite that belonged to her late husband Howard. The relationship between the two meteorites recalls the duality and union of opposites in the Greek cross, and therefore also the masculine contrasted and united with the feminine.

Infine in cima alla torre, l’artista ha previsto di collocare il suo meteorite di ferro Toluca proveniente da Xiquipilio in Messico, accanto al meteorite Morasko di suo marito Howard.

L’associazione tra i due meteoriti richiama la dualità e unità degli opposti nella croce greca, quindi il maschile contrapposto e unito al femminile.

The Toluca meteorite was given to the artist for her sixtieth birthday by Mattias Bärmann, a German curator, writer and editor, and expert in the relationships among traditional Asian artistic techniques, science and philosophy in modern and contemporary art. The artist first saw the meteorite at Bärmann’s home in Bavaria, and was immediately fascinated by the curious geometric patterns on its surface known as Widmanstätten structures. But what struck her even more were the circumstances of its origin, as it had formed in zero gravity. And so she asked Bärmann if she could have one to display alongside her drawings, so viewers could see its similarity to her drawings in person, and understand that her work aspires to a dimension where the force of gravity is no more.

Il meteorite Toluca le fu donato per il suo sessantesimo compleanno, da Mattias Barmann curatore, autore ed editore tedesco esperto nell’arte moderna e contemporanea dei rapporti tra le tecniche tradizionali della cultura asiatica e le scienze e la filosofia. L’artista lo vide per la prima volta a casa di Barmann in Bavaria, e ne fu subito attratta per via delle superfici che recano figure di Widmanstatten (particolari motivi geometrici). Quello che la colpì di più fu proprio la condizione delle sue origini, poiché si era formato a gravità zero. Così domandò a Barmann di averne un esemplare da esporre insieme ai suoi disegni affinché i visitatori cogliessero a prima vista la similitudine con i suoi disegni e comprendessero che il suo lavoro aspira ad una dimensione dove non c’è più nessuna forza di gravità.

Palazzo dell’Emiciclo

REDISCOVERED SAN MICHELE CLOISTER & THE LIBRARY OF PALAZZO DELL’EMICICLO

IL RITROVATO CONVENTO SAN MICHELE E LA BIBLIOTECA DI PALAZZO DELL’EMICICLO

In 1606, the scholarly Capuchin friar Francesco Vastarini proposed the construction of a new abbey for the Order of Friars Minor inside the city walls of L’Aquila. Thus the abbey, dedicated to the Archangel Michael and designed by the priest-architect Bernardo Romano, took shape. It was made up of a church flanked by a two-story, four-walled cloister with a central courtyard, with services on the ground floor and the friars’ quarters on the upper level. Behind the complex and towards the surrounding walls was the abbey’s yard, which included a vegetable garden.

Dal 1606 su proposta dello studioso frate cappuccino Francesco Vastarini , si pensò a costruire all’Aquila una sede dell’ordine dei frati minori entro le mura della città. Fu così che su progetto di padre Bernardo Romano prese forma il convento dedicato all’arcangelo Michele, costituito essenzialmente da una chiesa e affiancata da un convento quadrangolare con cortile al centro, su due livelli con ambienti di servizio a piano terra e le camere per i frati al primo piano. Alle spalle del complesso verso la cinta muraria, vi era l’orto con i campi del convento.

In 1865, after the unification of Italy, the abbey was suppressed and expropriated, and the friars moved to the complex of Santa Chiara in Borgo Rivera. The abbey of San Michele became a headquarters for the Guardia di Finanza and was later taken over by the municipal administration.

The administration then decided to house the Regional Exposition in the building, which was reconverted by architect Carlo Waldis into its current evocative form, with its semicircular portico mirroring that of the Villa Comunale.

The complex hosted the 1903 Exposition and subsequent editions. In 1972 the headquarters of the Regional Council was moved to the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, which was restored by the architect Renzo Mancini thanks to the wisdom of superintendent Mario Moretti. In 1984, the complex was expanded with the addition of new structures designed by architect Giuseppe Santoro.

Nel 1865 dopo l’Unità d’Italia il convento fu soppresso ed espropriato, e i cappuccini si trasferirono nel Complesso di Santa Chiara a Borgo Rivera e il convento di San Michele divenne sede della Guardia di Finanza e poi l’amministrazione comunale che ne prese la gestione, decise di localizzarci l’Esposizione Regionale con una riconversione dell’architetto Carlo Waldis che lo trasformò nell’attuale caratteristica facciata ad esedra porticata in corrispondenza della Villa Comunale. Il complesso ospitò l’Esposizione del 1903 e quelle successive. Nel 1972 la sede della giunta regionale venne trasferita all’Emiciclo, che fu restaurato dall’architetto Renzo Mancini grazie all’intuizione del soprintendente Mario Moretti.

Nel 1984 il complesso fu ampliato con nuovi edifici progettati dall’achitetto Giuseppe Santoro.

The 2009 earthquake caused severe damage to the entire complex, and the Emiciclo underwent a radical reconstruction effort following antiseismic legislation. It was reopened to the public on June 22, 2018. The rebuilding project included the creation of a new foundation beneath the complex, and the installation and activation of 61 seismic isolators. It is the first public edifice in Italy - and indeed in all of Europe - to have adopted such an advanced anti-seismic system.

Il terremoto del 2009 danneggiò gravemente l’intero complesso, pertanto l’Emiciclo fu sottoposto ad un radicale progetto di ricostruzione secondo le normative antisismiche.

E’ stato riaperto al pubblico il 22 giugno del 2018.

L’intervento ha permesso la realizzazione di una nuova fondazione al di sotto del complesso e la posa in opera di 61 isolatori sismici.

E’ il primo palazzo pubblico in Italia e in Europa ad aver adottato una soluzione antisismica così avanzata. Grazie a questo radicale intervento condotto dalla Soprintendenza per l’Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città dell’Aquila e i Comuni del Cratere, sono stati rinvenuti gli antichi ambienti del convento seicentesco e della chiesa, rimasti nascosti per anni nei sotterranei dell’Emiciclo e che attualmente ospitano la Biblioteca di Palazzo dell’Emiciclo. Come afferma la soprintendente Alessandra Vittorini “i rinvenimenti, gli antichi percorsi e la tracce del passato riemergono dal sottosuolo e ridisegnano la storia urbana, concorrendo alla costruzione di nuove conoscenze e contribuendo al recupero di una memoria collettiva della città e del territorio...”

And it was also thanks to this radical effort, carried out by the Office of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the City of L’Aquila and the Municipalities of the Impact Zone, that the ancient halls of the seventeenth-century cloister were rediscovered after being hidden for years beneath the Emiciclo. Today the abbey is home to the Library of the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo.

Superintendent Alessandra Vittorini confirms: “The rediscovery of these ancient pathways and the traces of the past that are re-emerging from underground have redrawn our history, contributing to new knowledge and the recovery of the collective memory of the city and its territory...”

In the transitional period between late antiquity and the Medieval era, monasteries and abbeys played a crucial role in society, as guardians of literacy and knowledge.

Their libraries contained works of theology, rhetoric, history, architecture, medicine, mathematics and other natural sciences, as well as treatises on politics, philosophy and poetry.

Manuscripts, from late antiquity until the Renaissance, were all born in monasteries.

The transcription and study of ancient codices became the abbey’s primary function.

Le loro biblioteche contenevano opere di teologica, retorica, storia, architettura, medicina e matematica e altre scienze naturali nonché trattati sullo stato, sulla filosofia e poesia.

I manoscritti nacquero, dalla tarda antichità al Rinascimento, nei monasteri.

La trascrizione dei codici e il loro studio, divennero il compito primario del convento.

La miniatura dei codici assunse un ruolo fondamentale per la divulgazione delle Regole dell’ordine e della cultura della scrittura specifica del monastero, e ogni monastero aveva un’apposita sala scriptorium dove lavoravano gli amanuensi.

The illumination of these manuscripts took on a fundamental role for the divulgation of the Rule of the monastic order and the monastery’s specific writing style, and every monastery had its own scriptorium - a dedicated room where the scribes worked and practiced their art.

Linda Karshan’s artistic project for the library, as well as focusing its attention on the importance of art and culture to the reconstruction of the identity of a city as historically and culturally significant as L’Aquila, is also an invitation

to reflect on the concept of balance in a land continually afflicted by seismic tremors and earthquakes.

Reimagining balance as a dynamic state instead of one of stasis leads inevitably to a more physiological view of seismic events. Karshan’s work presents the concept of balance in philosophical and scientific terms, knowledge of which becomes a possible way to restore the city’s confidence, allowing it to live harmoniously in its rediscovered spaces.

The British-American artist’s donation to the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo will offer a unique and unmissable opportunity to build a network between the library in L’Aquila and the libraries of the universities and international museums where her work is displayed, aimed at a cultural exchange on philosophical and scientific topics, with the goal of organizing periodic seminars, meetings and lectures in L’Aquila with exponents of international culture. With this, L’Aquila’s library will become unique in Italy: the first library to offer a circular idea of culture, to be understood as an active and propulsive space, not only a place for research and study but also one that offers a new stimulus for the local and international community.

La donazione dall’artista a Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, fornirà l’occasione unica e imperdibile per costruire un network tra la biblioteca dell’Aquila e le biblioteche delle università e dei musei internazionali presso i quali è accreditata l’artista, per uno scambio culturale nelle materie filosofiche e scientifiche, con il fine di organizzare all’Aquila periodicamente seminari, convegni e lectures con esponenti della cultura internazionale. UNIVERSITY AND CULTURE IN RECONSTRUCTION L’UNIVERSITA’ E LA CULTURA NELLA RICOSTRUZIONE Eleonora Laurini PhD Engineer | Ingegnere e Dottore di Ricerca L’Aquila has always been known as a university city, attracting a large number of students: it is an historic city, with numerous departments and university facilities. Despite being a regional capital, it is a city far from the chaotic metropolis, with a large historical center animated by university evenings. Its alleys, its squares, the “Parco Del Sole”, the proximity to the Gran Sasso mountain and many other unique characteristics have made it one of the most loved cities by university students over the years ... Until that terrible 2009, which destroyed at the same time material and spiritual goods, and that has put a strain on our beautiful university town.

L’Aquila da sempre è annoverata come città universitaria, attrattiva per un gran numero di studenti: è una città storica, con molteplici dipartimenti e strutture universitarie ma, pur essendo un capoluogo di Regione, è una città lontana dalle caotiche metropoli, con un grande centro storico vissuto di animate serate universitarie. I suoi vicoli, le sue piazze, il “Parco Del Sole”, la vicinanza con la vetta del Gran Sasso e molte altre di queste caratteristiche ne hanno fatto una delle città più amate dagli studenti universitari negli anni... Fino a quel terribile 2009, che ha distrutto contemporaneamente beni materiali e spirituali, e che ha messo a dura prova la bella cittadina universitaria.

The economy, in fact, revolved in large measure, around the university, offering central housing units, and ample space for educational activities, above all the building of Engineering in Roio, the pride of the city. Immediately after the earthquake, many students were forced to commute, not having available housing, many have withdrawn their enrollment and changed their place of study.

Others have continued their studies here, only by virtue of exemption from tuition fees. No longer possessing its beautiful buildings and its wonderful historical center, the city was no longer attractive from the university point of view, and so the economy lost a large part of its productive system, as well as its image of being an “enlightened” city.

It began to recede from the collective imagination.

L’economia infatti, ruotava soprattutto attorno all’università, offrendo unità abitative centrali, ed ampi spazi per le attività didattiche, prima tra tutti la sede di Ingegneria a Roio, fiore all’occhiello della città. Nell’immediato dopo sisma, molti studenti sono stati costretti al pendolarismo, non disponendo di alloggi agibili, molti hanno ritirato le iscrizioni cambiando luogo di studio, altri hanno proseguito gli studi spinti dall’unica motivazione dell’esenzione dalle tasse universitarie.

Non possedendo più le sue belle strutture, il suo meraviglioso centro storico, la città non era più attraente agli occhi degli universitari, e così l’economia perdeva una grossa fetta del suo sistema produttivo, nonchè l’ideale di città “illuminata”, cominciava ad allontanarsi dall’immaginario collettivo.

In light of this, in recent years, we have focused on the re-creation of a cohesive urban and social fabric. For example, many initiatives have been put into place to exploit what happened on technical and scientific subjects. The many construction sites that have alternated in the city have been the subject of studies, educational visits, and consideration by students, to offer unique material on which to build an incomparable cultural legacy.

At the same time, the economic operators of the sector have been able to create skills in these subjects unique to L’Aquila, beyond the norm of national and international knowledge. In fact, the city needs to feel “unique” because of what has happened to it. These post-earthquake ten years represent our urban and cultural evolution.

Alla luce di ciò, in questi anni, si è puntato alla ricreazione di un tessuto urbano e sociale coeso.

Molte iniziative sono state, ad esempio, messe in atto per avvalersi nelle materie tecnico-scientifiche, di quanto accaduto. I tanti cantieri che si sono avvicendati nella città, sono stati oggetto di studi, di visite didattiche, di elaborazioni da parte degli studenti, per proporre materiale unico su cui produrre un bagaglio culturale incomparabile.

Gli stessi operatori economici del settore, hanno potuto creare delle competenze in tali materie non confrontabili con il resto dei saperi nazionali ed internazionali. La città ha infatti bisogno di sentirsi “unica” perchè unico è ciò che le è accaduto, ed unica è ciò che in questi dieci anni post sisma rappresenta la sua evoluzione urbanistica e culturale.

The reconstruction of a building cannot be separated from a social reconstruction: what has been lived and learned in these years is all the more painful, and the more restorative, for our society.

La ricostruzione dell’edificato non può non prescindere da una ricostruzione sociale: quanto è stato vissuto ed appreso in questi anni, è tanto più doloroso, quanto più ricostituente per la nostra società.

The tower of books by the artist Linda Karshan is not only an artistic installation for an educational and cultural path, but is a symbol of rebirth and reconstruction for the city. Each book is similar to a brick and the base of the tower must have very firm foundations to support the placement of the last brick at the top. The base, therefore, is the hardest to realize. We could think that it is similar to our emotions and knowledge in the first years after the catastrophe: the psychological difficulty of tackling what happened, and technically understanding and studying the modalities of intervention. This concept is perfectly identified in the meaning of resilience. In resilient engineering it is a material that absorbs shocks without breaking, in psychology it is the ability of individuals to overcome a period of difficulty or a traumatic event. It is said that this human capacity is always active to deal with negative situations, but often, as in the case of our city, has allowed us not only to overcome them, but to create enormous benefits.

La torre di libri dell’artista Linda Karshan, non rappresenta solo un’istallazione artistica per il percorso formativo e culturale, ma è per la città un simbolo di rinascita e di ricostruzione. Ogni libro è assimilabile ad un mattone e la base della torre dovrà avere delle fondamenta molto salde per sostenere il posizionamento dell’ultimo mattone in cima. La stessa base, pertanto, è quella più dura da realizzare. Potrebbe essere assimilabile alla nostra emotività e conoscenza nei primi anni dopo la catastrofe: la difficoltà psicologica di affrontare quanto accaduto, e tecnicamente comprendere e studiare le modalità di intervento. Tale concetto si identifica perfettamente nel significato di resilienza. In ingegneria resiliente è un materiale che assorbe gli urti senza rompersi, in psicologia è la capacità degli individui a superare un periodo di difficoltà o un evento traumatico. Non è detto che tale capacità umana si attivi sempre a far fronte a situazioni negative, ma spesso, come nel caso della nostra città, ci ha permesso non solo di superarle, ma di trarne enormi benefici.

We might think that the tower of books, from the base to the top, represents these ten years, during which, in the first phase, overcoming inertia, immobility and lack of competence, have cost incomparable effort and commitment. But going forward in time, every brick has found its place, more beautiful and more solid than before, and we are ready to show off the regained beauty, stronger and more aware.

Potremmo, dunque, pensare che la torre di libri, dalla base alla cima, rappresenti questi dieci anni, durante i quali, nella prima fase, superare l’inerzia, l’immobilismo e la poca competenza, sono costati fatica ed impegno ineguagliabili, ma andando avanti nel tempo, ogni mattone ha ritrovato il suo posto, più bello e più solido di prima, ed è pronto a sfoggiare la riacquisita bellezza, più forte e più consapevole.

Reconstructing with culture means reinforcing one’s own knowledge, being aware of what has happened, immersing oneself in the roots that originate from the past so that our present is more solid. We cannot forget what happened, but we can build upon it a more stable future, starting to live and think that there are no gaps to fill, only spaces to rebuild! After all, “the paths are built travelling” (Franz Kafka), and we have built numerous paths to sustain a living connection with the past. We have travelled and we will travel again to the future, to rebuild our city and give it back the splendor and the light it deserves.

Ricostruire con la cultura, significa rafforzare le proprie conoscenze, essere consapevoli di quanto accaduto, immergersi nelle radici che partono dal passato affinché il nostro presente sia più solido. Non possiamo dimenticare l’accaduto, ma possiamo fondare su di esso un futuro più stabile, ricominciando a vivere e pensando che non ci sono vuoti da colmare, ma tanti spazi da ricostruire! In fondo “i sentieri si costruiscono viaggiando” (cit. Franz Kafka), e noi abbiamo costruito numerosi sentieri per poter continuare ad avere un collegamento vivo con il passato. Abbiamo viaggiato e viaggeremo ancora verso il futuro, per ricostruire la nostra città e ridarle lo splendore e la luce che merita, sperando in una nuova città “illuminata”.

THE TRUTH OF THE UNIVERSE Linda Karshan March 2019 “They told me that the truth of the universe was inscribed into our very bones. That the human skeleton was itself a hieroglyph. That everything we had ever known on earth was shown to us in the first days after death. That our experience of the world was desired by the cosmos, and needed by it for its own renewal.”

- Saul Bellow, Something to Remember me by, 1991 *** British psychoanalyst W.R. Bion usefully tells us that knowledge is not something you have, but is the sum of the connections between what you learn and your experience. My installation of books and SOUNDINGS, within the library of L’Aquila, is a glimpse of what I have learned as a Common Reader.

A Common Reader is one who roams the fields of learning feeding freely on the thoughts they find there, testing these thoughts against each other and against one’s own experience. *** “When I read and listen, I put what is useful into my mental apparatus,” noted the British historian Eric Hobsbawm, “Gradually I see – very gradually – how a picture of history is crystallizing out of it all…”* *** According to Henry James it is the, “exquisite problem of the artist,” to draw that picture: “Really, universally, relationships stop nowhere, and the exquisite problem of the artist is eternally but to DRAW, by a geography of his own, the CIRCLE within which they shall happily appear to do so.”** My geography recently took me to Paris, where I carefully listened to Anca Vasiliu describe a very early model for SOUNDINGS. In VIII century BCE Sparta, she told me, two poets, Tyrtée and Kallinos, composed exhortation elegies to rouse their warriors to battle. Even in their day, these poems were considered, ‘sounded sculpture.’ Composed of ‘phonetic-syllabic nodes’, clusters of sounds, they operated below the semantic and syntactic level of language.

Today, fresh research on ‘le sculpture sonoré de la langue’ is being conducted by Magali Anneé, a philosopher of Antiquity at the Sorbonne. She refers to the structure of these poems as, ‘sonic weaving,’ or ‘sounded rhythm.’

In this way she suggests, language could reconnect with itself and its speaker, whole moving the listener/warrior to battle. “…Linda Karshan would certainly be a warrior.

A warrior on the path of drawings.”*** ‘Sonic weaving,’ perfectly describes the structure of SOUNDINGS, both the acoustic drawing and its associated works on paper. One sees the weaving, one hears the threads. Like the Spartan elegies, my work comes through a transitional space, where it operates beneath the level of the rational.

Days later, at the British Museum, I “read” selected clay tablets from the Royal Library of King Ashurbanipal, King of the World, King of Assyria, 669-631 BCE. Ashurbanipal was an unusual king; he understood that knowledge was power. In addition to his military might, the control of his empire rested on knowledge which he acquired in a studied, deliberate manner.

Surrounding himself with the most learned men of his day, his royal library united all written knowledge from Mesopotamia under one roof. It contained complete sets of the classic reference work in professionally produced editions.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A great many people have come together to realize this project; I am extremely grateful to each of them for their unique contribution. My first and last thanks go to Roberta Semeraro for her vision to bring my work to L’Aquila, a vision inspired by the film we made together with filmmaker Marco Agostinelli, “Silhouette in Balance, Linda Karshan at the Abbey of San Giorgio, from Sunrise to Sunset .” Many thanks to Helen Higgins for the crucial introduction to Roberta.

A proposal was called for. Together with my studio manager, Allison Wucher, we prepared what was needed to be considered for Nove Artisti per la Ricostruzione (Nine Artists for the Reconstruction). Thanks to Allison’s creativity and command of “techne”, now as ever, we won the day. Carmelo Grasso, director of the Benedicti Claustra Onlus of the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore, joined the project with enthusiasm, collaborating on the concept which included a second tower of books to echo our tower in San Giorgio, as part of Equilibrio (San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, August – October 2018).

My thanks go to Arch. I am honoured to share the stage with Giovani ANCE as they celebrate 10 years of reconstruction.

The placement of SOUNDINGS within the ancient library of L’Aquila required fresh thought and expertise. Eleonore Laurini, Ph.D. Engineer, University of L’Aquila, has seen to every detail and I am grateful to her.

The heart of the project is SOUNDINGS, the acoustic drawing, which was realized in full collaboration with Candida Richardson. With great sensitivity, Candida recorded and shaped our sculpture. Lutz Becker wrote for its inaugural catalogue in Berlin, 2016, where it was presented by Kit Schulte and Satellite Berlin.

At the heart of L’Aquila lies the Greek Cross. Thanks to Carmelo Grasso, Jacopo Pieropan has ensured that the Greek Cross becomes the precious object it is, to be held within this beautiful catalogue printed by Papergraf in Padua.

Central to my installation, within the Biblioteca of L’Aquila, is my tower of books. Included within are personal treasures given to me by professor David Wiggins of Oxford and Anca Vasiliu, Professor of Philosophy, Sorbonne, Paris. Both David and Anca recognized Plato’s time in my work. It is their own writing that I share with the citizens and students of L’Aquila.

Antony Richardson, Candida’s father, presented me with his copy of Palladio’s I quattro libri dell’architettura in appreciation of my show in San Giorgio. This book now enters the Library of L’Aquila as part of my Tower, together with numerous books presented to me by my son, Thomas Karshan, who over the years has guided my path as a Common Reader. Two meteorites, gifts of Mattias Bärmann, will complete the Tower. These signs from the heavens and his insights throughout give gravitas to the project. I am grateful to him now as ever.

At Constantine, my art shippers, Rachel Hinsley and Sascha Wiltshire, recognizing the significance of the project, generously provided transport of the Soundings to L’Aquila. Adam Prideaux, of Hallet International, has graciously sponsored the production of this catalogue as well as the forthcoming film which will take our work in L’Aquila forward, creating links between L’Aquila, Venice, Paris and London. I am enormously grateful to them all. Thanks also to The Redfern Gallery, London for their aide in facilitating the logistics of transporting works from the studio to the library.

In 2012, Salvatore Mazza of Edizioni Canopo invited me to Prato, Italy, where together we created Moti dell’Animo, Movements of the Mind, a beautiful artists book which will be permanently on view within the library in L’Aquila.

Our catalogue is embellished by photographs taken by Allison Wucher, Ishmael Annobil, Candida Richardson, Marco Agostinelli and Carmelo Grasso. The Italian texts by the President of the Region and by Roberta were brilliantly translated by Mara Gerety, recommended to us by Nicola Giacobbo. Eleonora bravely provided both versions of her text.

The spirit of equilibrio, so central to the project here as in Venice, rests in no small measure on the vision and writing on my work by Richard Davey within the Equilibrio catalogue (2018).

I am honoured to be included, in such a permanent and direct way, in the rebuilding of L’Aquila’s cultural future; I thank all those who view my work as worthy of this placement. Coming from Minneapolis, MN, the model of civic pride in the United States, the thinking that underpins the reconstruction of L’Aquila, and its sense of pride in its culture, is close to my heart. I hope my work may contribute to the opportunitas of this brave città.
