WORKS ON PAPER

INTRODUCTION

Paul Feiler had his first exhibition in January 1953 at the Redfern Gallery and showed there regularly for 10 years. After a thirty-year gap he returned to the Redfern in 1993, not long after I had first met him.

drawings, still lifes, descriptive landscapes, haunting charcoals of Newlyn Harbour and his development towards a geometric abstraction which would be the focus of his work until the end of his life.

During the installation of that exhibition, which was completely orchestrated by him, I was introduced to his calm authority and complete understanding of the asymmetrical balance to best exhibit the work. This experience began a connection for me into Feiler’s aesthetic and creative spirituality.

As I left for London I was given instructions to take a detour from the A30 onto the North Coastal road, to pull over just before the village of Gwithian and look North East. I was then to drive on into Gwithian and call from the phone box to report back with my observations.

Later on I spent a week in Cornwall, visiting Paul in his studio every day in order to catalogue work. It was a beautiful studio, a barn originally converted by the painter Stanhope Forbes and used by Feiler’s friend Bryan Wynter before he took it over in the mid 1970s. I was amused to find out that the studio was in a place called Paul, a small village beyond Newlyn. Passing through an entrance tunnel of the fuchsia so widespread in Cornish hedgerows and into an astonishing space filled with light and containing fascinating objects, photographs and the tools of his trade, Feiler’s studio was a revelation.

When I got out of the car and looked, there in front of me was the divided oval that had appeared in so many of the works I had seen! An oval-shaped field sloping upwards from the road with a path running through the middle of it, worn by cattle. I called him excitedly as instructed. He just said: ‘Well done. And now you know what it’s all about.’

He allowed me access to his storeroom and to look through his plan chests where I discovered works on paper from all periods of his life. This experience gave me a valuable insight into his creative practice – his influences and inspiration from the early figurative illustrations, life

This exhibition includes a selection of works on paper, some of which have never before been shown and many of which I remember from that first visit.

Naturally I knew that there was far more to it than this. But it was fascinating to see how his work, although abstract, was so closely linked to and inspired by his visual experience of landscape and the human interaction within it.
