How did you personally get started in the music industry?
By necessity. In the 1970s no established labels were interested in what I was doing. The only way to release the music was to put it out myself. I financed the recording and manufacturing out of pocket—made 1000 copies— dropped them all at New Music Distribution Service uptown—and after about a year I used the royalties from sales to make the next recording.
When and where did the label begin?
Tzadik began in 1995 in NYC.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
In the Jewish world, a Tzadik is a righteous person. Someone you can trust to help guide you, and whose main concern is in improving the world. A Tzadik is an important, valued, and respected member of their community—and understands that everything in life has purpose and meaning.
How has the label changed since it started?
Not much—we continue to release music we believe in, and we have had new releases pretty much every month since we began. Tzadik is dedicated to releasing the best in avant-garde and experimental music, presenting a worldwide community of contemporary composer-performers who find it difficult or impossible to release their music through more conventional channels. Tzadik believes - most of all - in the integrity of its artists. What you hear on Tzadik is the artists’ vision undiluted.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.
The label team is tight. Four people. I make the artistic decisions. Kazunori Sugiyama handles contracts, bookkeeping and advises on production. Sarah Robertson handles manufacturing with her company A to Z. Heung-Heung Chin does all the design work.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
Pledge Music went bankrupt owing us $200,000. But with the help of friends we managed to raise the money through donations and a Limited Edition Vinyl series. The Pandemic did not affect us at all. When the world is in chaos my system actually gets stronger!
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
We work out of NYC. There is no dedicated office space or phone line. Wherever we meet is our office. Last year Kazunori moved back to Japan but continues to work with us from there as strong as ever.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
Tzadik is not tied to any one style or genre—and releases a very wide range of music.
We believe in music that is honest, imaginative, well crafted, and cathartic. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
Exactly the same. We believe in the integrity and personal vision of our artists, and continue to do what we believe in without compromise. Our mission is to support a passionate and dedicated community of musical adventurers. We do not suffer fools gladly, have little patience for people who do not give our work the respect we feel it deserves, and have no interest in the unstable world of musical fashion.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
We do not and have never promoted our work in any way. We make it available. We neither cajole or convince people to buy it. It’s here—it’s great— and when you are ready for it you are most welcome into our world. This is not entertainment. It requires effort, thought, time, and consideration.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Open-minded and curious.

The Rise & The Fall is the fth studio album from charged folk-rock trio The Rural Alberta Advantage. It is the rst album featuring the return of original band member, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Amy Cole alongside Paul Banwatt (drums) and Nils Edenlo (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard). The album will be released on digital and CD formats on October 6th, 2023 with the much anticipated limited edition vinyl coming soon.
“All of our music is rooted in a certain amount of heart and honesty. The songs themselves come from a very earnest place and they are really extensions of who we are. Sometimes we hide those emotions with a lot of noise and sonic energy, while other times we leave them raw and bare. I see our albums more as diary entries, or snapshots in time and this one certainly ts that bill,” says Edenlo .
The Rise & The Fall is a culmination of navigating songwriting through forced zoom meetings, trading les of song ideas over email, managing rehearsals in borrowed warehouses that allowed for more personal space, and proving that the specialness of the band and their songs could only be found with them all together in one room and especially on stage. Getting back to live performances across North America one small tour leg at a time in 2022 gave The RAA back the chance to rework, cancel and perfect these new songs and bring them back home into studios around Toronto for recording with Gavin Gardiner (All Day Coconut). For the rst time, the band focused on writing and recording a few songs at a time, taking their tradition of roadtesting new music to a whole new level of real-time collaboration with their fans. Over the past couple of years, some of the new music has been shared in real time in the form of multiple singles (‘CANDU’, ‘Plague Dogs’) and The Rise EP released in 2022. The Rise & The Fall is the rst full length album from The Rural Alberta Advantage since 2017.

Are you tired of that same old song? Tune into any alt-rock robo-jock frequency on the FM dial and you’ll know what I mean. Somewhere along the way, nostalgia curdled, and it feels like we’re doomed to hear the same boring souls for eternity. But don’t ask California sons Allah-Las—they wouldn’t know a thing about it. “The Stuff,” which opens the band’s fifth LP, Zuma 85, lays it out:
“I don’t listen to the radio/They keep playing that song again/And the deejay’s a computer.”
As the glammy, electronic strut of the song indicates, Zuma 85 signals the start of a new era for Allah-Las, and finds the band reinventing itself in defiance of the algorithmic categorization and robotic sterility. Recorded in the midst of the shift from the Old World to whatever branch of reality we’re on now, it’s a return, too: The album will be released October 13th on their own label, Calico Discos, in partnership with Innovative Leisure, which released early defining statements like Allah-Las (2012) and Worship The Sun (2014).
For the last 15 years, Allah-Las have alchemically melded surf rock washes with folk rock jangle and rock, building up their lauded music podcast, Reverberation Radio, and record label, Calico Discos, in the process. But a lot has changed since Matthew Correia (drums/vocals), Spencer Dunham (bass, guitar, vocals), Miles Michaud (guitar, organ, vocals), and Pedrum Siadatian (guitar, synth, vocals) first bonded over psych rock vinyl in the back room at Amoeba Records in the late aughts. Zuma 85 finds the quartet facing a new world with a wealth of new sounds, drawing from an eclectic mix of progressive rock, prog, kosmische, and Eno-esque art rock, scuzzy Royal Trux riffs, and detouring into tones and textures that call to mind ‘90s and 2000s pop.
The album was born, like so much else these days, out of the downtime of 2020-2022. For most of the band’s existence, Allah-Las adhered to a year to album year/tour year schedule, logging serious hours on the road. When the shutdown of 2020 put everything on hold, it opened up space for each member to focus on their own lives and interests, and time to re-envision what creative processes could look like.
When it came time to reconvene, that sense of looseness proved pivotal. Instead of bringing finished songs to the studio, they entered the picturesque Panoramic House recording in Stinson Beach (a space co-owned by John Baccigaluppi of Tape Op magazine) with sketches, ideas, and riffs. Working with co-producer Jeremy Harris (White Fence, Devendra Banhart, Sam Gendel) they shaped and crafted the new songs in real time over three sessions, which were then mixed in Los Angeles by frequent collaborator Jarvis Taveniere (Woods, Avalanches, Purple Mountains).
It was clear from the get go the bucolic environment—observed through picture windows overlooking Stinson Beach and Bolinas Bay—would be conducive to creating the first statement from Allah-Las 2.0. “We got in real late that first night of the first session,” Michaud says. “It was around midnight. We had a quick intro and Jeremy had a bottle of wine. We had a little and he said, ‘You wanna start recording?’”
They did. And when the group reassembled the following morning to listen back, they found the sparkling and stutter--stepped “Right On Time” mostly done. It was unlike anything the band had ever recorded but felt entirely natural. “Everything just worked,” Michaud says. “That studio just pulls it out of you.”
Despite the habitat where Zuma 85 was crafted, these songs represent the Allah-Las departing familiar beachy territory for off the map expanses, embracing the influence of late-era Lou Reed and John Cale, the ‘70s mutant pop of Peter Ivers and early Eno and Roxy Music, and textures borrowed from Japanese pop and loner-folk obscurities, There are kosmische zones, like the Popol Vuh-evoking “Hadal Zone,” anthemic and electronic boogies like “The Stuff” and “Sky Club,” and arch prog on tunes like “GB BB” and “Smog Cutter.” On the instrumental title track, “Zuma 85,” field recordings and chimes precede Manuel Göttsching (Ash Ra)-style guitars, which drift aquatically over a motorik rhythm and hazy synths.
Sharing a name with that song is a photo of an abandoned house by California photographer John Divola. Selected by Correia, the band’s resident photography head and album art designer, it juxtaposes a visage of man-made chaos against the natural beauty of the West Coast. It served as an unspoken reference point for the album, a symbolic totem indicative of a new era. A decade and a half into their run as Allah-Las, Correia, Dunham, Michaud, and Siadatian continue on an evolutionary path. Are you tired of the same old songs? So are they. For Tori Zietsch, who records under the moniker Maple Glider, music has been an escape from a series of oppressive institutions: religion, enervating relationships, her own brain.
At 14, Zietsch freed herself from her restrictive and deeply limited religious upbringing and at 15—after learning to play guitar from a chord book—she played her first show, at a skatepark. After touring the open mic scene in Brisbane, moving to the UK, and returning to Melbourne, she released her critically lauded debut album ‘To Enjoy is the Only Thing’ in 2021, which Rolling Stone described as “one of the most accomplished debut albums in recent years.”
Ultimately, ‘I Get Into Trouble’ is the sound of alchemized pain. In each song, Zietsch transmutes tribulation and confusion into clarity and deep insight. She embraces the opportunity to be plainly and painfully honest. The album is a thematic expansion of her debut, going into greater and clearer detail, as she delves back into her Christian childhood while deconstructing her relationship to her body and her sexuality, alongside concepts of consent and shame. Throughout the songs, she draws similar parallels between religion and sexuality in novelistic detail, before landing on a note of hopeful optimism, and embracing a new life of peacefulness. Tortoise’s third full-length release, TNT, was written and recorded during a 10-month interval in 1997. This longer-than-usual writing/production schedule was purposefully undertaken by the group in the hopes of crafting an expansive, diverse, yet thematically coherent offering. TNT builds upon the spare, instrumental framework of the group’s first, self-titled album, and the extended edits, melodic adventures, and klangfarben of the subsequent full-length release, Millions Now Living Will Never Die. Further to this, Tortoise’s interest in the possibilities offered by the remixing of tracks was realized within the actual production of TNT; individual elements, sections, or sometimes whole compositions mutate within the album’s shifting framework. These techniques were suitably realized thanks in part to the use of non-linear digital recording and editing methods, the first example of such work for the group.

The Beths occupy a warm, energetic sonic space between joyful hooks, sun-soaked harmonies, and acerbic lyrics. Their debut album Future Me Hates Me delivers an astonishment of roadtrip-ready pleasures, each song hitting your ears with an exhilarating endorphin rush like the first time you heard Slanted and Enchanted or “Cannonball.”
Front and center on these ten infectious tracks is lead singer and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes. Stokes has previously worked in other genres within Auckland’s rich and varied music scene, recently playing in a folk outfit, but it was in exploring the angst-ridden sounds of her youth that she found her place. “Fronting this kind of band was a new experience for me,” says Stokes. “I never thought I had the right voice for it.”
From the irresistible title track to future singles “Happy Unhappy” and “You Wouldn’t Like Me,” Stokes commands a vocal range that spans from the brash confidence of Joan Jett to the disarming vulnerability of Jenny Lewis. Further honeying Future Me Hates Me’s dark lyrics that explore complex topics like being newly alone and the self-defeating anticipation of impending regret, ecstatic vocal harmonies bubble up like in the greatest pop and R+B of the ‘60s, while inverting the trope of the “sad dude singer accompanied by a homogenous girl-sound.”
All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y.
“There’s a lot of sad sincerity in the lyrics,” she continues, “that relies on the music having a light heart and sense of humor to keep it from being too earnest.” Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh. “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves -- and then apologizing for it.” The result is nothing less than one of the standout records of 2018.

Something Weird has exhumed a crypt full of classic Spook Show promos and radio spots monstrously mashed together with fiendish rare surf and garage rock instrumentals. Includes a delightfully deranged DVD featuring Monsters Crash the Pajama Party and more bone-chilling freakouts of fright!
In 2001 SWV compiled what was to become one of their most popular and beloved DVDs, Monsters Crash the Pajama Party Spook Show Spectacular. It featured over three hours of rare Ghost Show shorts and trailers, radio spot audio, galleries of memorabilia, and commentaries with legendary living Ghostmasters. The folks at SWV were huge Spook Show fans and collected anything related to the subject including original 35mm film trailers as well as radio spots on promotional 45s and magnetic tape. So this was a dream project for them, and something near and dear to their bloody hearts.
Since its release, audio bits from the DVD have popped up on radio stations and music compilations. People love them. So it just seemed logical that Something Weird do a Spook Show album. It is hard to know how many times the mythology and mystery of Goat ’s backstory can be written about, but new release ‘Medicine’ does away with any need to dwell on the past, returning with a more introspective, slightly mellower psych -folk sound that remains recognisably them. There is a consistently restrained, warm feel across the whole work, and the band suggest that the overall theme of the album is about “the impermanence of life in different ways: sickness, relationships, love, death and how our time is finite ”. At times the album’ s sound has nods to classic Swedish 70spsych/prog/folk acts such asArbete & Fritid, Charlie & Esdor and Träd, Gräs & Stenar. ‘Vakna’ takes on this influence, progressing across nearly six minutes of swaying, warping guitar solos, without ever breaking out into chaos. The ‘Medicine’ of the title may refer to a number of salves, or the value of relationships and love: “For our families, friends, society, this could be done through the use of psychedelics, through meditation, through learning from other people, staying curious and never settling for a ‘solid’ identity ”. Flute is foregrounded throughout, threading across several tracks from the opener ‘Impermanence And Death ’. It duets elegantly with keening synth lines through the beautiful ‘You’ll Be Alright’, and leads the melody of the closing track ‘Tripping In The Graveyard’. ‘TSOD’, with its backdrop of sitar and acoustic guitar, has an indelible vocal melody that could be a lost George Harrison recording. The title of the full album version of first single, ‘I Became The Unemployment Office’, comes from an expression for someone taking advantage of you. The joyous, echo -laden groove of penultimate track ‘Join The Resistance’ bursts into life and continues to build toa moment of release with a huge Sabbath -esque riff. Whatever your dosage, and regardless of your remedy, it is now time to take your medicine.

Lizzie Powell has always been a risk-taker. As the creative force behind the in uential Canadian out t Land of Talk, the Montreal-based songwriter has over the past 15 years amassed a catalog of four unimpeachable albums that stretch the boundaries of indie rock. But Performances, their fth LP, feels like a total reinvention: an un inching statement from an artist who’s not afraid to say how they feel. Though it trades muscular guitar rock for understated piano, it’s still the most urgent, cathartic, and personal release of Powell’s career so far. “It's the weirdest, mightiest little record I've made since I used to write music on my four-track when I was 14,” says Powell. “I needed to make a love letter to my teenage self by being more vulnerable and doing all the production myself.” Here, they doggedly value their own intuition over anything else to make their most rewarding album yet.
Work on Performances started in 2021 during a time that Powell refers to as a period of “identity confusion,” where they had trouble nding a place for the intimate, piano-based recordings they were making. ”I realized right away that I was not feeling electric guitar for this album,” says Powell. “At rst, I felt like something was wrong with me: Land of Talk is about guitars and me rocking out. But is that all I am? Can I get away with doing a Land of Talk record without a ton of electric guitar?” Instead of pandering to arbitrary expectations and preconceived notions about their career so far, Powell decided to follow the muse and immerse themself into this new artistic lane. “I would write demos and think, ‘Oh, that doesn't really kind of sound like Land of Talk,’” they say. “But then I realized that I'm Land of Talk.”
Performances is a de ant and resonant blow against expectations and outside pressure. It’s an LP showcasing an artist without constraints and allowing themself to be radically honest. “The album title is very literal,” says Powell. “I'm performing what's in my brain but I'm tired of performing femininity for the music industry, femininity in my life, respectability, and vulnerability. I'm trying to grow out of these and break out of these roles in my life.” Powell’s fearlessness as a songwriter has already led to Land of Talk boasting an unmistakably essential discography but with this album, they nd the perfect opportunity to give themself the grace to truly double down on their own vital sensibilities. They usher the songs every step of the way from demoing to producing, imbuing each track with immense care and un ltered feeling.
“This is me reclaiming Land of Talk as it always has been,” says Powell. “Every record we've made has just been one step closer to me guring out how I want to make a record myself. I might not ever make an album like this again, but I just felt like I owed it to myself to try.”

Oakland CA's Blue Ocean have been working around the fringes of the Bay Area indie scene since 2019, honing their very particular noise-soaked racket into a unique and instantly identifiable sound. They blend elements of shoegaze, pop, noise rock and electronics into a dense, sometimes disorienting soundworld that embodies a spectral mystery that recalls forebears like Disco Inferno, Bark Psychosis and Flying Saucer Attack.
Fertile State is their debut album, following on the heels of 3 tape EPs and a LP drawn from those tapes that sold out instantly on release in 2021. Songs like "Ode," "Fertile State" and "Syncnine" show how much Blue Ocean has grown in the last few years. They've easily shrugged off many of the markers of their punk/indie roots, allowing their experimental urges free rein and and the noise to find it's own level. It's a bracing, invigorating album that truly rewards deep listening and points the way forward to an intriguing future.

New Jersey's Lightheaded have conjured, through some mysterious alchemy, a distinctive flavor of pop that draws as much from 60s Brill Building, garage-pop and folk-pop as it does from the DIY indie explosion of the 80s/early 90s. Their debut EP Good Good Great! shows that band core Cynthia and Stephen are clearly students of pop in all its permutations, but they wear their influences lightly -- a typical Lightheaded song could have been released in 1966 or 1986, but in fact sounds just right in 2023! The sound has just right amount of elemental murk, drawing to mind a mythical collab between Phil Spector and Curt Boettcher's Sagittarius, working their way through the Goffin & King songbook. Cynthia's rich vocals are the secret weapon here, possessing a depth and swing that can handle with aplomb the sprightliest pop or the tearjerkingest drama. From the melodic sweep of EP opener "Mercury Girl" to the folky jangle of "The Garden," to the just-so cover of teen pop obscurity "Patti Girl" and the Shangri-Las-esque closer "Love Is Overrated," Good Good Great! introduces us to a band with a most unique take on pop and more than whets the appetite for their debut album, due on Slumberland in early 2024.

Kacey Johansing’s latest album Year Away will be released July 28 via Night Bloom Records. In March of 2020, after learning that a dear friend’s life was coming to an end, Johansing sat down and in one sitting wrote the song “Daffodils”. An elegiac tribute to someone facing death with grace and curiosity, the lyrics confront Johansing’s own mortality by observing the brief lifespan of a flower. Only a week later when the world came to an abrupt standstill, she soon found herself processing this recent loss while trying to make sense of a new global reality. Across the ensuing months, Johansing found herself increasingly untethered by a world of isolation and political upheaval.
Throughout Year Away Johansing traverses uncharted emotional landscapes brought upon by the changes occurring all around her. The forced self-r eflection of the moment is aptly captured by “Old Friend”, featuring an aching melody and swooning production that recalls the best of Harry Nilsson. The epic piano and saxophone-driven “Smile with My Eyes” addresses the loss of community as friends became distant and political divides between family grew. On “Smile” Johansing pushes her vocals further than ever, expanding her range and using her peerless voice as the singular instrument it is. Facing the loss of a family home due to environmental destruction, “Shifting Sands” is marked by soaring flutes, field recordings and glassy synthesizers that nod to Japanese New Age. Though born of turbulent times, Year Away is ultimately interested in moving forward.

Short Biography:
In 2013, Grift was one of the first bands to be signed to Nordvis – a collaboration which has since yielded four albums and several EPs. With its seamless transitions between bleak, atmospheric metal and forest folk compositions, the project has grown prominent across multiple scenes – as evidenced by everything from prestigious splits with contemporary metal greats like Saiva and Drudkh to being billed alongside leading neofolk acts such as Sangre de Muerdago, Nebelung, Osi & the Jupiter and Wolcensmen.
Regardless of instrumentation, or whether Grift performs in concert or studio, Erik Gärdefors always seeks to convey the sense of melancholy and existential questions that artists and thinkers throughout history have always felt a strong urge to express. Borne from pure nature mysticism, Grift offers evocative escapism to – if only for a moment – sever the chains of mundanity and allow your imagination to roam free.
Moments of eternity: the first plucks at the strings, a bass note cementing the drift into place a little more than a minute in. The organ drones, iterating unrelivable ancient history, a chiming note of the church. Guitar strings, climbing that stairway to heaven. Gossamer-light when viewed from a distance; up close, the gears grind with a visceral physicality.

Cooper’s organ and synths and Bill’s guitar draw songs from spontaneous statements and elegiac scraps, floating closer, then farther, and closer again to the sounds of the other. Starting with a melody, a set of progressions or even as little as a scale or just a key, gives room for either one of ‘em to take the lead, depending on where they are or are going at any given time. The reigning motif most often seems to be, to melt and wind around each other’s sound, part of a singular undulation, handed back and forth, a slowly emerging trip up into and through an ideal of exuberance.

Since 2011, Mike’s been a Drag City stalwart, first with Sic Alps , then as a solo and with The Peacers but Mike “The Mighty Flashlight” Fellows has been a behind-the-scenes figure at Drag City since the early early days, playing live and on record with Royal Trux , Silver Jews and Will Oldham . And in fact, Donovan first laid eyes on Fellows way back in 1994, at yer legendary Drag City Invitational (we’re a matchmaker, blush!)! A multi-hyphenate, Fellows has contributed to releases from Endless Boogie, Pigeons , Weeping Bong Band and Prison in recent years. So when these two rambling musicians found themselves in adjacent communities in upstate New York, Mike D brought Mike F into the process of his new solo album. There The Mighty Flashlight turned ON, bringing his recording, writing, performing and mixing talents to the tabletop with such a seasoned vibe that he bought himself real estate in the album title itself! Something usually reserved for characters of legend (like Kiss’s adversary The Phantom of the Park ) or giants of Dub ( King Tubby, Scientist , Lee Perry et al, amen).
The two- Mike combination makes the fourth Donovan solo alb a one that hits all kinda high water marks for the most and the best of what he’s capable of/plus inclined to do. And MF wanted to hear something different out of MD ’s sound so it could only be a meeting of the minds in the end.
Mike D ’s music, in all phases, takes the form of a next-phase roots-pop: soaked in the traditional waters of rock and roll and passed through a variety of after-punk sonic sieves, highlighted with DIY and lo-fi values. and making a jolly hallucinatory racket, at that! He prefers a particular density of obtuse angles colliding sweet and hot noise, an arrangement he has perfected over all his Sic Alps/solo/ The Peacers years; his innate understanding of the mechanics of a pop song wends purposefully through the junk-strewn landscape, sharing secrets with cipher in hand. Playing in this cracked kingdom of sound/garden of verse, Mighty Flashlight alternately accents and balances Mike’s eccentricities with his playing and knob-spinning and with the Flashlight shining bright upon him, Donovan’s serpentine path becomes ever so much more elastic, heightened from line to line, change to change, its motility creating different shapes in our ears. Mighty ’s own kind of stereo imagining informs Donovan’s smoky subterranea with additional depth of field, while still allowing all the wayward details within the arrangement to diverge as one.
Mike and Mighty wind it all together: art punk utterance and top 40 radio junk of yore, the primitivity that formed recorded music in its youth, honkytonk romanticism, liminal chamber-folk and ever-present disassociated psychedelia, transformed via self-medication into a gleeful, extramusical ennui while giving the listener impetus to sing along with Mike’s patented unlikely combos of melody and lyric, as re:

On Poolside’s fourth studio album Blame It All On Love, Paradise leaves the shallows and enters the depths of his own creative voice. Its 11 tracks are funky, soulful, laidback and full of hooks that elevate Poolside’s sound to poignant pop heights. Rather than flex his electronic muscles, the production marks a return to his live music roots and finds ease in simple and radiant layers of sound, even as it comes face-to-face with the complex reality of one’s dreams come true. The Cinematic Orchestra have announced a 20th anniversary audio reissue of their seminal 2003 album “Man With A Movie Camera.” The 2LP limited edition comes in ashen and pewter grey colored vinyl, housed in a rigid tip-on foiled, embossed and debossed detail gatefolded sleeve with updated artwork and new liner notes. This reissue will include 12” double sided art card insert of unseen session photography from the time.
The Cinematic Orchestra, formed by Jason Swinscoe and later joined by long-time friend and collaborator Dominic Smith, are one of the UK’s most respected and influential British artists of the last twenty years, creating genre-defying compositions that introduced jazz to a new breed of electronic music fans.
Jason Swinscoe of The Cinematic Orchestra was commissioned to score a soundtrack to a silent movie as a one-off performance. The film was Dziga Vertov's ‘Man With A Movie Camera,’ a 1929 early documentary cinema film from the Soviet Union, and hailed by many including The British Film Institute to be one of the greatest films of all time, nearly 100 years on from its creation. The performance took place in the historic Coliseu Porto, and ended with a standing ovation of 3,500 people. The Cinematic Orchestra have since toured the show internationally over the years, including performances at The Barbican in London, NYC’s Winter Garden at WTC, and Sydney Opera House.
The album was met with much acclaim. The Guardian gave it 4/5 and said “You can perform an autopsy on the jazz instruments, DJ Shadow-like grooves and repeating chord sequences, yet come away scratching your head as to how, in such simple combinations, they make such heartfelt music.” The Independent on Sunday continued, “It stands alone, proud and complete.” And dance magazines also showered it with praise such as DJ Magazine, “The genius, a word not to be used lightly, of The Cinematic Orchestra seemingly knows no bounds.”

▶ Beggars Arkive are happy to announce a vinyl reissue of The Nephilim, the second album by Fields Of The Nephilim, released 35 years ago by Situation Two/Beggars Banquet and not pressed on vinyl since. The album is pressed on golden brown vinyl and has been expanded to a double LP. It contains their epic, legendary track “Moonchild” plus three bonus tracks.
Formed in 1984, Fields of the Nephilim is the creation of vocalist and front man Carl McCoy. Highly influential, especially in the world of goth, but also within the metal and electronic genres, their legacy endures to this day. You can hear their influence on bands like Swans, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, Wolves in The Throne Room, Behemoth and more.
The Nephilim was recorded in a former courthouse in the Somerset countryside where defendants who were sentenced to death were hung. “Moonchild” is the band’s best known song due to it reaching #28 in the UK single charts, and LouderSound called it a classic and said that it “perfectly encapsulates this era of the band: it has some nifty guitar work, great bass lines from Tony Pettitt, Nod’s stellar drumming and McCoy’s distinctive vocals.” The song is named after a novel by Aleister Crowley, and there are several other nods to Crowley throughout The Nephilim.
In a 2013 remembrance of the album, PopMatters said “The band’s sophomore effort, regarded not only as its best work but also as one of the UK goth scene’s masterpieces, is a seamless, hour-long trek into a surreal land populated by chiming guitars, hypnotic bass, found samples, and McCoy’s storytelling.”

We always stood apart from everything else that was going on around us. The goth scene embraced us, but then so did many other scenes and subcultures. Eli Paperboy Reed, that venerated progenitor of all things soul, R&B and Americana, presents Hits And Misses: The Singles, a collection of rarities, originals, and covers of songs by Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Jimmy Hughes, Latimore, Lee Moses, Motörhead, and The Violinaires. Featuring songs that were previously only available as 45 rpm singles at the merch table during Reed’s international tours, this 11-track remastered collection features vividly reimagined covers spanning every genre as well as a trio of originals not on any album.
Reed’s take on Motörhead’s classic, “Ace of Spades,” is reimagined as a soul revival, the pulsing organ, Memphis style-horns and chicken scratch guitar serve as a backdrop for Reed’s signature vocal wails. So convincing is Reed’s rendition of “Ace,” it will have listeners wondering if it was Motörhead doing the covering rather than the other way around.
“‘The Ace of Spades’ basically happened by accident,” says Reed. “My guitar player at the time started playing the iconic riff at a soundcheck and I, having never heard the original, started playing along. The band fell in and the arrangement wrote itself.”
With a noirish R&B take on Steely Dan’s 1972 hit “Do It Again,” the album also includes covers of Bob Dylan’s “To Be Alone With You,” Merle Haggard’s “I’m Gonna Break Every Heart I Can,” Latimore’s 1974 hit “Let’s Straighten It Out,” showcasing a vocal intensity that’s not quite as present in the nearly spoken word original. “Steal Away“ and “I Don’t Know What the World is Coming To” were cut live at FAME in Muscle Shoals, with the swampers David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, and Spooner Oldham. The collection also includes three Reed originals, including the high-energy, anthemic party starter “IDKWYCTD (I Came to Play),” featured in Disney’s Marvel comic series, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

The second album from The Three O’Clock found the band further blending psychedelic pop with contemporary sounds. Producer Earle Mankey encouraged the band in their experimentation. The result yielded a college-radio hit, “Jet Fighter,” which remains one of the group’s most well-known songs. Other standouts include, “A Day In Erotica,” “Stupid Einstein,” “Fall to the Ground,” and their version of the Bee Gees “In My Own Time”. This album positioned the band at the forefront of the Paisley Underground scene. Many fans and critics consider this to be their masterpiece.
For its 40th anniversary, the album was remastered by Bill Inglot and Dave Schultz. Additionally, the band decided to update the cover art and give the album two front covers with no back cover. The LP lacquer was cut at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and pressed at Citizen Vinyl on clear green vinyl.

McCombs is one of the most highly regarded bassists/guitarists working today, known for his pioneering band Tortoise, his bass playing in Chicago’s Eleventh Dream Day, and his innovative instrumental group Brokeback. He has released albums with guitarist David Daniell, and collaborated with the likes of Tom Zé to Yo La Tengo, Stereolab to Daniel Lanois. In addition to being the touring bassist for The Sea and Cake, McCombs has somehow found time to form a new trio Black Duck with guitarist Bill MacKay, and percussionist Charles Rumback Douglas McCombs’ VMAK<KOMBZ<<<DUGLAS<<<6NDR7<<< is a window into one of the most distinguished and distinct voices in guitar music for the last three decades, effortlessly stretching the boundaries of the guitar while staying firmly grounded by blissful, uncanny melody.
McCombs’ debut solo album is a mix of improvisation, textural explorations and recurring melodic themes. The album title was lifted by the well-traveled McCombs from one of the visas packed into his current passport, the stamp a reminder of how far his music has taken him –literally all over the world. Not since McCombs’ solo outlet Brokeback blossomed into a full-fledged rock unit has his singular approach to solo guitar playing been exhibited in such striking detail. Taking after Brokeback’s classic Morse Code in the Modern Age : Across the Americas, “Two To Coolness” is a piece that McCombs refined through a series of improvised performances and features Calexico drummer John Convertino, as well as singer/guitarist/synth player Sam Prekop (also of The Sea and Cake). “Green Crown’s Step” was largely improvised working through melodies and patterns. The stately “Two Who Falls Shadows” reshapes three key themes that Tortoise and Brokeback fans will find to be signature McCombs, buoyed by fellow Brokeback member Jim Elkington (Tweedy), who also engineered and mixed the album.

Over the course of 20 years, German artist Black To Comm (Marc Richter) has pushed the limits of / and merged the aesthetics of art, conceptual installations and music, coming in a wave of innovation alongside his peers Pita, Fennesz, and later Sarah Davachi to name a few. Through it all Richter as Black to Comm has challenged assumptions, explored identity and confronted the concept of authorship itself.
At Zeenath Parallel Heavens finds Black to Comm contemplating the hybridity within each and every one of us, be it sexual, racial, cultural, or linguistic. Richter mirrors personal dualities musically with a combination of sounds he created and manipulated samples, blurring their boundaries. “I always try to blur the line between sampling and my own recordings, also between ‘real’ instruments,MIDI, electronics, editing, between authenticity and theatrics/artificiality.” says Richter. When recording he became aware of how AI text programs processing resembles his own methods. “I had the realization recently that the way I compose is not too dissimilar to what AI software is doing nowadays - especially when the AI is hallucinating (this is the term used when the AI is overloaded/overcharged/inundated and comes up with made-up results).” Human behavior reflected in a computer facsimile of human intelligence appealed to the ethos of Black to Comm, whose titles and concepts are often oblique and tongue-in-cheek.
At Zeenath Parallel Heavens dazzling expanse of sounds, Richter assembles an arresting sonic narrative exploring the existence of alternative realities. It is as astounding in the scope of its vision as it is immediately enthralling, as inviting as it is subtly unnerving.

Raised in the classical conservatories of Italy, where she was considered a child prodigy on the cello and toured with orchestras throughout Europe, moving to the United States was not a part of Chiara D’Anzieri’s life plan. She taught herself guitar, bass, and drums, and studied the music of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, Velvet Underground, The Doors, and The Beatles. She nicknamed herself “Santa Chiara,” after her favorite monastery in Naples, to give her music a divine connection. As a female singer/songwriter, she faced backlash and misogyny, so she learned how to record and produce her own music.
And at 24, just as she was on the verge of giving up her dreams, she met someone who would forever change her life’s trajectory: Her now-husband, American singer/songwriter Ron Gallo.
Santa Chiara’s IMPORTED, out October 20, 2023 via legendary indie label Kill Rock Stars, tells the story of their transatlantic romance and everything that followed: Leaving her home country and immigrating to the United States at 25, building a first home together in Nashville, and ultimately leaving that home for a new one in Philadelphia, where the couple now resides.
“Being an immigrant at the age of 25 was a new territory – my life was changing drastically,” D’Anzieri says. “I was moving to the other side of the planet, to a country I was never interested in, speaking a different language from my own, and leaving everything behind me out of love. It was and still is a big deal.”
“This album is a collection of moments, pictures, feelings, sadness, nostalgia, thoughts, hopes, and love. I wanted to make a record that sounded just like me. I wanted to play instruments how I like, put them together how I think they go together. Making music that sounds how I would look. I wanted this record to be so easy and clear. There Goes My Mind finds the Mojo Men in full control of their high-wire blend of boy-girl vocals. Abetted principally by sparkling keyboard wizardry, winsome vocals, and lavish guitars, this is your ticket to one of West Coast’s best psychedelic garage bands. First time on vinyl!
Considering all the wonderfully buoyant material they tracked for Warner Brothers in the ‘60s, it’s puzzling the label never pulled the trigger on an album by San Francisco’s Mojo Men. They’d had regional, British Invasion-style hits for Tom Donahue’s visionary Autumn Records in 1965-66, and even cracked the national top 40 for Warner/Reprise in 1967 with “Sit Down, I Think I Love You,” a lavish, Van Dyke Parks-embellished production that the song’s composer, Buffalo Springfield’s Steve Stills, apparently preferred to his own band’s version.
The Mojo Men featured the robust vocals of Jim Alaimo, Paul Curcio’s solid guitar work and the sparkling keyboard wizardry of Don Metchick, trained at Rochester, NY’s Eastman School Of Music. And, best of all, they had the beautiful Jan Errico who could play drums as well as any guy in town and possessed a singing voice that would stop people dead in their tracks. Yet, no LP sprang from these San Fran stalwarts!
The most ironic card in this rainbow-hued deck, however, is the album’s title song, “When You’re Down.” Had they sloshed on some psychedelic guitar–a la John Cipollina or Jorma Kaukonen–this opus alone might have gained them entry to any West Coast hippie love palace. But that really wasn’t what the band was after. To paraphrase the most sagacious Roger McGuinn, things turned out just fine for the Mojo Men.

It sounded like nothing else released in 1982 – not Signals by Rush, Avalon by Roxy Music, the Cure’s Pornography, Rio by Duran Duran, Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, Toto IV, Donald Fagan’s The Nightfly, nor Robert Plant’s Pictures At Eleven. It didn’t even seem akin to such ‘82 punk classics as the Circle Jerk’s Wild In The Streets, the Descendents' Milo Goes To College or Fear’s The Record. And it sure as hell didn’t sound like the Clash’s Combat Rock.
Condition Red, the debut album from New Orleans punk band Red Rockers, echoed the power, aggression, and highly charged political anger of the Clash’s early work. And deliberately so.
Eventually, the Red Rockers joined their inspirations on a few US tour dates, showing audiences how the Clash used to do things as they leaped about in spray-painted shirts before hammer and sickle-festooned amps, screaming about “Guns Of Revolution.” Both Creem and Rolling Stone featured them, the latter beknighting them “the American Clash,” telling of plans to tour Cuba and release a vicious new single called “Voice of America.” The song instead surfaced the following year as a B-side to massive MTV pop hit “China,” an echo of what Red Rockers had been just the year before and were no longer.

Daniel Rossen presents 12 live recordings from Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown and his hometown of Santa Fe. The heralded Minneapolis-based band Barbaro forges an exhilarating new musical path on About The Winter, their inaugural outing for StorySound Records. Featuring guitarist Kyle Shelstad, bassist Jason Wells, and violinist Rachel Calvert, the dynamic young group developed a strong following for their modernist bluegrass sound on their 2020 debut, Dressed In Roses. Their new album, however, represents a “coming of age” for Barbaro, according to Shelstad, as it more authentically reflects the band’s adventurous musical evolution over the past few years. All three band members point to the title tune, “Let’s Talk About The Winter” as the song that established the tone for the album. The song, Wells explains, “fully captured the soundscape that now defines us as a band.” The ten tracks on About The Winter provide a wonderful showcase for the unique dynamic created from Shelstad’s string band roots blending with Calvert’s and Wells’ backgrounds in classical music. The album also finds Barbaro expanding its sound by having Shelstad share vocal duties with Calvert for the first time along with weaving electric instrumentation into the group’s acoustic-based music. The bandmates all agree on the key contributions of producer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens). “His production,” Calvert revealed, “elevated these tracks to an entirely different level.” Together they have fashioned a captivating pastoral Americana sound on About The Winter that is both traditional and progressive.

An archival release of this headscratching 2010 recording made by members of the freshly disintegrated Stars Like Fleas (called “NY’s most sublime and continuously undiscovered band” by PAPER Magazine): an amalgam of private press new age, electro-acoustic improvisation, goth-adjacent 80s diy cassette culture, Italian prog rock, and community choirs.
From 2009-2011, Family Dynamics said what they had to say and then vanished, their members separately going on to celebrated musical careers of their own. The project emerged from the still smoldering ashes of volatile art-music collective Stars Like Fleas, one of the earliest and most polarizing bands to define the early aughts North Brooklyn music scene that produced Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, TV On The Radio, Liars and others who went on to enjoy broader appeal and success. Family Dynamics performed for barely two years before unceremoniously vanishing, without any widely available record or document. Whatever’s Clever is thrilled to (re)issue this buried treasure, self-recorded in a cabin in Woodstock, NY, at their creative peak, and never before issued in physical format.

It’s an international collaborative project between TaxiCab Verses (a name inspired by the phrases covering the backs of taxis Jim observed during his travels in Ghana) and Ghana’s Kofi Atentenben and the Warriors The 10track album is named Is What You Make It, and according to Flagpole Magazine it's "aggressive and propulsive, even on tracks lesser musicians would let devolve into simple swing patterns (like the darkly jazz-tinged “Step By Step”)...my only regret is that I didn’t write about it the moment it came out It’s righteously excellent " Overall, 22 musicians contributed to this between Athens and West Africa.

Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa is the debut album by Canadian composer and tenor, Jeremy Dutcher – which involves post-classical rearrangement of his Wolastoq First Nation traditional music. Granted access to the Canadian Museum of History, Jeremy discovered wax cylinders from 1907 of his ancestors singing forgotten songs and stories that had been taken from the Wolastoqiyik Nation generations ago. The album is Jeremy’s contribution to his heritage and community in attempts to revitalize the Wolastoq language to the world, which has less than 100 speakers from birth alive today. This collection of ground breaking post-classical arrangements is truly one of a kind and recalls the mood of Rufus Wainwright's operatic performance or the haunting pop of Anthony & The Johnsons.
