What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

SS: My original goals were more on the design end of things. Making cool logos, ensuring that all the LP packaging looked good, having a functioning website. I still strive for all that stuff but I’m more concerned with helping artists get as much out of their releases as possible. Musicians love their albums like parents love their children and we want to honor that. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? J.S: Impossible question, but i’m obsessed with Badge Époque Ensemble Clouds Of Joy It’s such a crazy album. The coral element combined with the funkiest jazz funk is such an amazing combination. It’s also TER100!

SS: Definitely the Frank Hatchett retrospective. I’m very proud of the design work I did for that release, and seeing the real heads embrace the actual music has been just as satisfying.

SS: In the early years, we’d go to shows with this old leather suitcase from the 80s that was designed to hold cassettes. Our first batch of releases were all tapes so we’d fill the suitcase with all of them and then set up a makeshift booth somewhere. I felt like a traveling salesman for sure. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

J.S: Yup, we’re both musicians.

SS: I’m going off the grid and shouting out Vertigo Records in Ottawa. That’s where I grew up and bought some of my first wax in the early 2000s. I remember getting an original Fiction pressing of Pornography for $6.50 (which I promptly lost in a move.) Times have changed, and it’s cool that they’ve been able to stay in business so long. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? J.S: Definitely for our good looks. SS: I want Telephone Explosion to be remembered as the label co-owned by Steve Sido li, the man who went on to become the first global emperor in 2030. He single-hand edly convinced the invading Neptunians to stand down with his heart-wrenching cover of Sublime’s What I Got

J.S: Varied! I think there are so many different entry points to the TER / Morning Trip world. You could get into us through the deep reissues we do (Bruce Haack, Laraaji, Steve Roach, Frank Hatchett, Alice Damon, William Eaton etc) or through the amazing contemporary catalog (Badge Époque Ensemble, Bernice, Joseph Shabason, Masahiro Takahashi, Scott Hardware, Jane Inc, Freak Heat Waves, Pantayo, Fresh Pepper, Album, Lee Paradise, Dorothea Paas, Mas Aya etc.)

J.S: Artist recommendations are huge. Badge Époque Ensemble Clouds Of Joy is out of this world!!! Jane Inc’s latest Faster Than I Can Take is incredibly fun. The entire Morn ing Trip catalog is amazing for super chill ambient / new age sounds. SS: It’s been amazing to get back out to live shows again, and there is no better feeling than discovering someone you’d like to work with in that environment. We recently saw a Toronto singer/songwriter called Shirley Hurt and we’re planning on releasing her debut digital album in December. Very cool Cate Le Bon-Meets-Nico vibe but done in her own unique style.

J.S: Hmmm. Back in the day we would hand assemble our record jackets to save money. We’d get all our friends in a room and drink beer and glue the sides together. The quality control got pretty bad by the end of the night.

SS: In a weird way there is more optimism in the music industry in 2022 than there was in 2008. When we started the label, CD sales were still in a free fall and file shar ing was huge. Streaming was non-existent. The vinyl boom hadn’t really hit yet, and reissues weren’t as much of a thing. I think Record Store Day was just getting off the ground. Plus there was a huge global recession. Things seem much more stable now. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: J.S: Gonna shoutout all the Toronto stores here: Rotate This, Invisible Cities, Henry’s, Seance Centre, Sonic Boom! Also, I love Folk Arts in San Diego!

SS: The average Telephone Explosion fan is a nuanced music nerd with excellent taste. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?

SS: Jon and I have been making music together for a long time. The first Telephone Explosion release was our band Teenanger’s first EP. Being musicians gives us an empathy towards our artists that maybe would not be there otherwise, or at least in a different way. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?

SS: I feel like one of the things that sets us apart as a label is the emphasis we place on cultivating nurturing environments for our artists. This applies to both wellness and creativity. We also really strive to represent a broad range of cultures, ethnicities, gender identities and socio-economic backgrounds with our roster.

SS: Some days I feel guilty that we’re involved in the sales and distribution of physical goods, and the toll that might take on our environment. I do remind myself that records tend not to get thrown into landfill very often. Yes, it takes materials to make them, but once they are created they are usually owned and enjoyed (and possibly re-sold) for their full existence. Also, music streaming services require miles and miles of servers that are located in remote areas. They all need to be powered and produce emissions as well. Really there is no way to listen to contemporary music without some sort of carbon footprint. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

J.S: Could not be more important x 2 !!!!!!!!!!

J.S: Snobby AF to be honest. We don’t make it, and I don’t buy the stuff. If I wanted to collect something for the novelty of the item, I’d get back into Pogs.

JS: With this label! Haha. SS: My first band, Frodo, which I started when I was 16. We played exactly one show in a bar and three people showed up. Two of them were my parents. I knew then that the future was bright. When and where did the label begin?

SS: Colored vinyl doesn’t have the same fidelity. Our job is to make sure that the records sound as good as possible. That means we stay away from color. How would you describe the average fan of the label?

J.S: Toronto Canada, 2006 I think. Steve knows exactly. SS: November 2007 to be exact. I went through my old emails just in case. How has the label changed since it started?

J.S: Night and day. I don’t even know if we had goals back then. HA! Now we’re trying to take over the entire music industry and make tens of dollars!

J.S: It changes completely every 6 months!

J.S: Oh jeez, in so many ways. I would say the most significant is that we are way better looking and much better at our jobs. SS: The biggest change is that we now make a living off the label. We had to juggle it with our day jobs for a long time. I still have a closet full of business casual attire so I just wear that to work even though I don’t have to. Khakis, Polos, Oxford shirts…pretty much covering all the bases. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

J.S: Could not be more important!!!!!!!!!!

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

J.S: Staying sane and dealing with the Supply Chain. Keep Calm and Supply Chain On? Is that meme-able yet? SS: I have to echo Jon with the supply chain problems. Things seem better now, but it was a good reminder that they can fall apart quite suddenly given the right set of circumstances. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight This Issue: Telephone Explosion Records

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

J.S Definitely: We were Toronto-centric before Drake stole our shtick. ;) But we also do tons of non-regional reissues (Bruce Haack, Frank Hatchett) and Morning Trip has artists from all over. SS: We don’t really have a non-Canadian contemporary artist on our current roster, but we would like to change that in the near future. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?

Out west, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear some Jack Moves ballad billowing from alowrider during a backseat make-out session. In Japan, their hit song hawked Big Macs™ at Mickey Deeznuts. The band’s self-titled Wax Poetics debut drew compar isons to “Off the Wall” era Michael Jackson. Their beats have been used by U-God, 50 cent, Ghostface Killah and Nipsey Hussle “Deep fun, truly meaningful, and endlessly surprising; “With their late night vibes, Zee Desmondes and Teddy Powell know how to make music that has their hands dipped in both the present and past of soul music.” -- Earmilk “Desmondes and Powell have the kind of talent that gets heads nodding, feet moving, eyes watering and hearts pounding. It is our distinct pleasure to announce the debut solo effort from Thee Sacred Souls' own Jensine Benitez. Anyone who has had the privilege to catch Thee Sacred Souls live is already well familiar with Jensine. On a nightly basis, when she gracefully steps into the spotlight for one of her solos, her mellifluous voice and commanding stage presence sends the crowd into a frenzy of adoration and unadulterated joy. With this single she enriches that charm with honeyed melodies set to floaty rhythms that are sure to have you bobbing your head with the windows rolled down. "Ilusión de Amor" is a lilting lament sung en español about a forlorn lover whose deep, brooding sadness has left them yearning well beyond any hope of reconciliation. On the flip is "The Sparkle in Your Eyes," a vibey, mid-tempo mover that will have couples crowding dance-floors for decades to come. A stunning two-sider that epitomizes the kind of soul music we dig. Snatch this one up quick, or tears may fall..

Extended guitar hero Oren Ambarchi returns with Shebang, the latest in the series of intricately detailed long-form rhythmic workouts that includes Quixotism (2014) and Hubris (2016). Like those records, Shebang features an international all-star cast of musical luminaries, their contributions recorded individually in locations from Sweden to Japan yet threaded together so convincingly (by Ambarchi in collaboration with Konrad Sprenger) that it’s hard to believe they weren’t breathing the same studio air. Expanding on the techniques used on Simian Angel (2019), we can never be entirely sure who is responsible for what we hear, as Ambarchi ’s guitar is used to trigger everything from bass lines to driving piano riffs.

Though single-mindedly occupying its rhythmic space throughout, She bang ’s dense ensemble sound is carefully composed while drawing on the free flow of improvisation, with individual voices momentarily coming to the fore and subtle changes in harmony and texture. Perhaps the most surprising of these shifts occurs around half-way through when the smoke of a buzzing synth crescendo from Jim O’Rourke clears to reveal something like a piano trio, with Ambarchi ’s guitar-triggered piano patterns providing restless accompaniment to flowing melodic lines from Chris Abrahams of The Necks , while Johan Berthling ’s double bass and Talia’s drums fill out the bottom end. Before long, things take another left turn as Julia Reidy ’s rapidly picked 12-string guitar lines take centre stage, with O’Rourke’s monumental synth clouds hovering in the distance. The ensemble surges through a slow series of harmonic changes before the whole shebang dissolves into a delirious synthetic mirage.

Picking up from the staccato guitar patterns that ran through Hubris, Shebang ’s single 35-minute track begins with a precisely interwoven lattice of chiming guitar figures, expanding Hubris ’ monolithic pulse into a joyous, hyper-rhythmic melodicism that calls up points of reference as disparate as Albert Marcoeur, early Pat Metheny Group, and Henry Kaiser ’s It’s A Wonderful Life. Building from isolated single notes into densely layered poly rhythms, the muted guitar tones are joined by subtle touches of shimmering Leslie cabinet tones and guitar synth. Simmering down and funnelling into a single note, the guitar stew is soon thickened by Joe Talia’s propulsive ride cymbal, which blossoms into a beautifully flowing yet rigorously snapped-to fusion funk, whose ever-shifting details skitter across the kit think 70s heavyweights like Jack DeJohnette or Jon Christensen . An unexpected entry of guttural bass clarinet licks from Sam Dunscombe begins the series of instrumental features that pepper the remainder of the piece. Soon we hear from the legendary British pedal steel player B.J. Cole (hopefully known to some listeners from his outer-limits singer-songwriter masterpiece The New Hovering Dog or, failing that, “Tiny Dancer”), whose languorous yet uneasy lines float in and out of a shifting rhythmic foundation supported by a single note bass groove, cut through with aleatoric synth articulations

Bridging minimalism, contemporary electronics, and classic ECM stylings, and bringing together a cast of preternaturally talented contributors, Shebang is unmistakably the work of Oren Ambarchi: obsessively detailed, relentlessly rhythmic, unabashedly celebratory.

A new Back To Mine album from one of Electronic music’s biggest international stars and a Back To Mine album for the Pitchfork audience

back to TYCHOmine

For the majority of Back To Mine artists, music was always their first love. For Scott Hansen however it was all about graphic design, drawing and photography until a friend at college gave him some damaged audio equipment. “I had just ventured into electronic music via early drum & bass and suddenly my mind started to wonder how music was made and about the whole creative process.” It was this passion for LTJ Bukem and Roni Size that set the base for the career of the San Francisco-based producer, composer, mu sician and creative force behind his twice Grammy nominated Tycho project. Intertwining carefully crafted visuals with a pulsating combination of ambience, samples, guitars and synthesizers, the Tycho (pronounced teak-o) story is now six albums old since the arrival of ‘Past Is Prologue’ in 2006.

Another highlight in the series for Back To Mine, who have already delivered recent stand out editions from the likes of Jungle, Fatboy Slim and Nightmares On Wax. This edition from Tycho is another timeless collection in the long standing and sought after collectable series.

The first US based artist to compile the famed mix series with a highly engaged global fanbase Features music from Slowdive, Ulrich Schnauss, Weval, Muddy Monk, Tourist and Schneider Includes an exclusive ‘live’ version of Tycho’s record PBS and never before released remix of Little Dragon. Includes music from Lancaster - first time pressed on physical Available on CD and heavyweight vinyl, including coloured tropical pearl collectors editions with all including download codes and artist track by track notes Large International Marketing campaign with a heavy internet presence and web 3.0 plan.

As well as being renowned for his photographic and design work under the name ‘ISO50’, Tycho’s music is a blend of various stylistic components, namely in the indie/electron ica world blending downtempo guitar, analogue synths and ambient elements such as breathing sounds and excerpts from weather broadcasts and dialogue.

“I have been making music for over 25 years, but I feel like I am just beginning” he laughs from his west-coast studio. “For my Back To Mine album I wanted to take things one step further than one of my club or Burning Man sets as I knew this was an opportunity to enter that whole headphone, other worldly, cinematic, soundscape space. I wanted the album to be almost like a dream sequence for the listener.”

Artist: Eris Drew / Octo Octa

Title: Day After A Night With U / Stars & Water

Opening with ‘A Day After A Night With You’, Eris D rew draws on elements of 90s big beat with a propulsive twist, adding chest rattling bass notes to anchor the track’s eyes down 4/4 rhythm. The track’s throwback sensibilities push to the fore further with an infectious soul vocal sample and vintage feelin g synths, alongside an almost spiritual mysticism that permeates the song’s skittering production and upbeat Createdmelodics.in

reaction to ‘A Day After A Night With You’’s dancefloor wonder, Octo Octa’s ‘Stars & Water’ takes on a much more commanding tone. Finding cues from a classic house sound, the track employs deft polyrhythms to build progressive energy. The track’s analog bassline contributes to its authoritative temp o before a beautifully spacious switch up leads the track from a high energy workout to a half time wander through the track’s sonic oasis, before an ecstatic build towards a final climax. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Metropolis.

The resulting album, "We Have Made A Spark" feels as though Rose Cousins is singing for you, about your life. From writing songs from a tiny cabin without electricity on a New Hampshire island, to the stage of one of her many international tour stops, her lone voice reaches out to listeners, all of us surrounded by our own forms of darkness, and challenges us to have the courage to forge ahead.

"One of the great little-known albums of last year came from a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia - a seasoned and award-winning singer-songwriter who has steadily built a following here in the U.S. Rose Cousins' "We Have Made A Spark" landed on Folk Alley's Best of 2012 list for its beautiful harmonies, creative arrangements and the sort of arresting songwriting that's sad even as it leaves listeners feeling hopeful. As always, Cousins' honest lyrics are as disarming as the music which accompanies them." - NPR Music, January 2013

"A sadder than sad, startlingly beautiful, emotionally naked album from a masterful singer/songwriter." - NOW Toronto, Top 10 Albums of 2012 Rose Cousins

Office Culture’s most ambitious project is also their most intimate and thematically focused. Where previous albums introduced a vast cityscape of scenery and characters, Big Time Things zooms into each lonely window, so close that it can be difficult to know what exactly we’re looking at. In Cook-Wilson’s hands, it’s not always easy to differentiate love songs from breakup songs, moments of connection from total isolation, forward momentum or a quickening spiral The music behind his words suggests the full story lies in the blur. Comprising Cook-Wilson alongside drummer Pat Kelly, bassist Charlie Kaplan, and guitarist Ian Wayne, Office Culture have never sounded so dynamic or alive, their music so full of intricate detail and open air. While you can still hear traces of their longtime staples—Joni Mitchell, the Blue Nile, the ECM catalog Big Time Things expands into new and adventurous territory. Occasionally, it recalls Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters band backing Scott Walker in the 1980s; other times, it feels like D’Angelo’s Voodoo recast as an opera As Cook-Wilson sings about feelings that transcend language (“A Word”) and moods that shift too quietly to be registered (“Suddenly”), he seeks to break from any songwriting tradition, following his thoughts to their open-ended conclusions. This approach leads the band to uncharacteristic moments of dissonance, as in the skronking tightrope of “Line,” and breakthroughs that glide with newfound grace. In “Elegance,” the band rides a tender, catchy groove, stopping and starting on a dime. As they reach a steady climax, Cook-Wilson looks us in the eyes and offers this wisdom: Everybody’s got a list to check off but Nobody knows what they wrote it for Well, you don’t have to be like that with me baby Lists never did me any good before And so, he tears up his lists, looks inward, and follows his heart.

Big Time Things is a story of crossed wires and missed connections, sleepless nights and scrapped plans. On the third album from Office Culture, the Brooklyn-based band led by pianist-songwriter Winston Cook-Wilson, the magic is in how every element of their texturally rich, emotionally complex music conjures these same visions. The choruses offer humble pledges (“I only want you to be happy”) and uneasy interruptions (“Stop, I feel nervous”); the band swells and sprawls; the arrangements incorporate strings, horns, and backing vocals, suggesting how each moment casts its own shadow.

After selling out at retail, Tim Hecker's incredible score to "The North Water", starring Colin Farrell and Jack O'Connell, has been re pressed on all new clear vinyl

Adapted from a novel of the same name The North Water by Ian McGuire it tells the story of a disgraced doctor who becomes a medic onboard an Arctic whaling ship. TV Show aired on BBC (UK) and AMC (Americas) Features in Pitchfork, The Quietus, Vinyl Factory, Brooklyn The Guardian. Radio Spot plays on 6 Music and Mark Kermode’s SCALA Radio social campaign Tim Hecker.

“The score for The North Water was written just before and during the pandemic in 2020, mostly over arguably one of the darkest winters of some memory in Montreal,” says Hecker “The music was an attempt to add depth and texture to a five hour doomed arctic journey that charts a trajectory from hardened optimism into abject futility. We worked with a primary palette of synthesizers, electronics, and treated cello, in rich live spaces as well as suffocating dead ones This version of the score is an enhanced mix of some of the material that made its way into the project ”

As Matt Hellriegel writes in his liner notes to this special release, “In certain respects, Christchuch’s T54 were a band out of time.” T54 featured a visceral, sonic guitar sound, perhaps out of step with most of the Flying Nun bands at the time. Joe describes T54 as being “stuck in the wrong era somewhat” yet “enduring well in New Zealand for those who bought the music and saw us live at the time.”

http://allyrecords.bandcamp.com Ally is proud to present this sonic gem remastered by bandleader Joe Sampson, who also fronts Salad Boys (Trouble In Mind) and plays in Best Bets (Meritorio / Melted Ice Cream), Local Tourist (Melted Ice Cream / Lovers Weekend), and several other bands. Sampson also has releases under Joe Sampson and Friends on Bandcamp. Reviews of T54: ”A formidable guitar sound pop, fuzzed up to a sonic rush that should be listened to loudly." Paul Luker, Ink Eats Man

Hellriegal writes, “Drone Attacks, with its black n blue stylised robot cover, didn’t look like anything else at the time, and it didn’t sound like anything else either. Bassist, Sam Hood, and drummer, Matt Scobie, formed the can crushing rhythm section; playing taut n straight with a weighty propulsion that gave the songs a sort of high rev Moterik chug (imagine if you will, Soundgarden doing the Subliminals). ‘N’ riding the machinelike churn, wiry guitar’d songwriter, Joe Sampson”, droning, chiming, clawing, and riffing away. Despite sharing their name with a 1940s battle tank, T54 have equal measures of sonic power and wavelike melodies completed by Sampson’s strong vocals. Songs like “Julie K” and “CR Model” reel you in and keep you wanting more and, ultimately, the EP enticed Flying Nun to sign the band to release a full album (that, by the way, Ally will be reissuing on vinyl for the first time in the near future more on that later!).

"A an insanely original band, who've essentially reinvented the wheel that turns faster and uses less resources.” Sentimental Steve, Under the Radar

Originally released in 2011, Ally Records is proud to release an expanded and remastered limited double vinyl edition of T54’s Drone Attacks their first ep with additional tracks including home recordings and live in the studio, housed in a full color gatefold jacket.

The purest a band can aim for is to present their milieu as a time capsule from the morning of. April Magazine deals deep in the hypnagogic charm of their surroundings. Since the 2018 release of “Shirley Don’t” a sneaky classic that first turned ears outside their SF Bay Area home the band has stirred out a handful of cryptic indie pop recordings nestled in warm aerosol hiss and scrappy hand-drawn cover art. Music that glints in the far back of an urban daydream where guitars could be bells, bells could be voices, and voices hardly find use in words. If The Ceiling Were A Kite is a document of things losing definition and time gone Theslack.songs on If The Ceiling Were A Kite were recorded over a span of about two years, after Peter, Mike and Kati started playing together around a four track cassette player in Peter ’s bedroom. While this is only the second in-studio meeting of this all-star group, the connections between its members run deep. In 2018, jazz musician extraordinaire Michael Marcus got an invite to bring his duo with drummer Jay Rosen to the Austrian venue Jazzgalerie Nickelsdorf. And when he arrived, the promoter of their show sprung a novel idea on them: performing their set with fellow reedsman Joe McPhee and another drummer. “It was a great concept,” Marcus remembers. “And the chemistry was really good.”

Though much of the music herein is freely composed, listeners are greeted with a relaxed, comfortable feeling. This may be one of the most accessible and enjoyable free improvisation dates you'll ever hear, even if you're not usually drawn to the avantgarde.

So much so that Marcus wanted to capture the sound of this unusual group—two horns and two percussionists improvising without a bass player or a piano or any other chordal instruments—on record. But with the drummer they played with in Austria unavailable to travel, Marcus, Rosen, and McPhee called on their friend and collaborator Warren Smith. And the Blue Reality Quartet was born.

Blue Reality

Michael Marcus, Joe McPhee, Warren Smith and Jay Rosen return to the studio with Blue Reality Quartet. After a much lauded debut in 2021, the quartet reconvene for a reprise of the sweet, multitextural improvised composition fans and critics alike raved about on their first release.

Andrew Cyrille, Elliott Sharp, & Richard Teitelbaum Evocation

Master drummer Andrew Cyrille (Cecil Taylor), guitaristreedist Elliott Sharp and pioneering electronic music composer-performer Richard Teitelbaum (Musica Elettronica Viva) improvised this music on October 13, 2011 at Roulette Intermedia’s first season in Brooklyn after over two decades in lower Manhattan. Now 10 years later, Richard Teitelbaum has passed, so Cyrille and Sharp are the only two remaining members of this trio. This recording documents Cyrille, Sharp and Teitelbaum using their instrumental skills and aesthetic sensibilities to act, feel, think, react in the present moment.

Teitelbaum played a mixed setup with piano, sampler, and computer, taking a signal from both Cyrille’s drums and Sharp’s guitar. Sharp used a number of extended plus various objects to excite the strings as well as an electronic bow, as well as extended techniques on the bass clarinet including circular breathing, singing into the horn and using the keys like an electronic filter. Cyrille’s drumming has always been both forceful and demonstrative or subtle and inquisitive or highlight interactive-whatever the situation calls for. Art urges journeys, but always leads us home Few artists have embodied this more than Sasha Perera’s moniker Perera Elsewhere. Journeys have punctuated Perera Elsewhere’s career, taking her from London’s vibrant club scene to Berlin’s bass experimentalist underground All of which developed her shapeshifting approach to music Her use of technology to create and to experiment with her voice, lyrics, percussive beats, deep bass frequencies and sound design to explore the human experience, all led to the ‘Doom Folk’ coined sound of the Perera Elsewhere project, where she found a home on LA label Friends of Friends, releasing two widely acclaimed albums Elsewhere, but always rooted No matter where Perera has found herself musically from live shows & DJ sets at institutions such as Berghain, the Guggenheim, the Hamburg Philharmonic, Mutek Festival, or music licensed for Ava DuVernay’s ‘Queen Sugar’ or by Oscar winning director Paolo Sorrentino she has constructed a creative habitat and welcomed others to it A true multi hyphenate, Perera’s open and autodidact technique is also highlighted by a long list of collaborations, composing music for moving image, art installations & dance Naturally, Perera’s work has led to invitations by renowned companies and cultural institutions such as Ableton, Native Instruments or the award winning Errrormusic in Berlin to share her creative knowledge with studio sessions, workshops, teaching, and mentoring She’s also worked with the British Council as well as Goethe Institute as an artist and co curator on music projects and tech education initiatives across Asia and Africa She is clearly at home in many places Inspired by the many things that transpired between 2019 2022 highlighted by the pandemic-, Home is a juxtaposition on the idea of ‘Elsewhere’ and reflections on leaving/coming/staying home. The album is a musical coming of age and apotheosis of all her previous work “I am somehow a little less shrouded in doom on this record, maybe more free with myself as a person, a producer & musician,” she explains, “This record resonates that freedom sonically, lyrically and visually ”

ABOUT

UTRY COMPOSITION CREDITS FOR EACH TRACK TIGRIS:

For nearly 10 years, there’s been one address in Tel Aviv where people know they can find pure, fiery musical energy: TIGRIS. And with “UTRY,” we’ve collected all the band’s tightest grooves and most exciting melodies on one career-spanning compilation. It’s a Raw Tapes celebration; consider it our gift to you — nine party-starting polyrhythmic tunes that melt down Senegalese percussion, East African tezeta jazz, swirling psychedelic keys and surf guitar into a potent brew. Keyboardist Roei Hermon, percussionist Oded Aloni, bassist Amir Sadot, guitarist Ilan Smilan and drummer Itamar Katzir first assembled their musical vision in an Ethiopian restaurant in Tel Aviv, and they’ve been diving head-first into electrifying grooves ever since. On “UTRY,” you’ll vibe with their finest cuts, pulled from TIGRIS’s three LPs. It’s your own tailor-made house party playlist. Just don’t be surprised when the party spins out of control. THE

Take five jazz musicians — studying charts and scales since they were teens — and set them loose in Tel Aviv’s freewheeling music scene, the crossroads where European, Middle Eastern and African styles all swirl together late into the night, every night. Then watch those musicians shed their formal training, and decide to make grooves with one goal in mind: having fun. Welcome to the psychedelic, endlessly funky world of TIGRIS. For keyboardist Roei Hermon and percussionist Oded Aloni, a 2010 trip to Senegal to study West African rhythms was transformative. When the friends returned to Tel Aviv, they nabbed bassist Amir Sadot, guitarist Ilan Smilan and percussionist Itamar Katzir and set up shop in an Ethiopian restaurant. There they began laying down the blueprint for a new sound: bass-heavy riffing, technicolor keyboards and enough live beats to make your head spin. TIGRIS BIO

“For those who haven’t met our music before, these are highlights from five records released between 1994-2002. The songs focus on the large internal lives of people in small mill towns like ours. This record also chronicles a decade of growth from a fiercely independent, self-produced New Hampshire band that flew under the radar during the heyday of the 1990s alt-country movement. The title of the record, Here Again, is inspired by a song from our 1994 self-titled record. We’ve always sought to write songs that hold up, personal songs that are durable and can stand on their own in a variety of arrangements. “Here Again” is one of those songs. It’s also a fitting title for a record that’s an opening salvo from a recently reunited band with its first new studio record forthcoming in late ‘22/early ‘23.” Here Again is set for release on April 29, 2022 via Strolling Bones Records.

Doug Paisley “Constant Companion” LP “When Paisley’s debut solo album was released last year, critics embraced his warm, wise and sometimes dark country songs. On his new record he is joined by Leslie Feist on two songs, and Garth Hudson, formerly of The Band on keyboards. His songs are as haunting as ever, with an emotional depth that keeps you humming and considering the songs long after the CD has stopped playing.” Shauna C Keddy, No Depression

"For a decade, Doug Paisley has turned quiet, specific moments into inquiries on life’s larger struggles. On his fourth album, Starter Home, Paisley details the chasm that separates what poet Seamus Heaney described as “getting started” and “getting started again.” These songs examine how the person you are never truly aligns with the person you want to be, especially when you stumble upon a sticking p oint that’s hard to move past."

“Paisley, like Young and a few other singer songwriters, has the power of immediate communication: when he opens his mouth, you believe him utterly that he has crossed the rivers, climbed the mountains, some through the fires, lived every molecule of what he sings. ” TimeOut New York, 2009

On Doug Paisley's third album "Strong Feelings", featuring guest vocals from Mary Margaret O’Hara and contributions from Garth Hudson (The Band), the Toronto alt country artist seeks refuge in the beauty of the romantic lyrical metaphors that have populate d the country genre since at least the heyday of Hank Williams. If we’re thinking of psych-rock as a genre, with its readymade tropes— fuzz guitars, shimmering harmonies, pastoral textures—it’s possibly the least psychedelic record Ejstes has ever made. But if psych is really about transcending what’s come before in favor of new ways of seeing and hearing, then the opposite is true. And that means En Ä r För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog goes further out than any Dungen record before it. There are classic psych rave-ups, of course, and the kind of brilliant vocal harmonies Ejstes has long made his trademark. There are soft, shuffling grooves that transform into wide-eyed cosmic revelations. There are intimate songs guided by Ejstes and his piano, which he plays so gently it sounds like he’s trying not to wake someone in the next room. And, perhaps most surprisingly, there’s a bit of turntable scratching, courtesy of Ejstes himself. Monstrous fills from drummer Johan Holmegard frequently blend with frenetic drum’n’bass programming inspired by the countless UK hardcore jungle mixes from the ’90s Ejstes has been listening to (“that’s what I’m obsessed with right now,” he says). At times, the album verges on ecstatic Screamadelica-style sunshine pop; occasionally it clicks around 160 bpm. On “Nattens Sista Strimma Ljus,” guitars skip like a synth pattern over a shaggy drum beat that sounds both like a late ’60s blowout and late ’80s acid house freakout while Ejstes’ vocal melody doesn’t quite resolve, hanging in the air like an uncomfortable question, full of self-confident insouciance kaleidoscopic feel of ‘Nattens Sista Strimma Ljus’ (‘The Night’s Last Shimmer of Light’) becomes almost otherworldly via Gustav Ejstes’ Swedish vocals, his tenor swooping in and out of the return after six years away with a buoyant effort that plugs that gap left by Tame Impala’s drift towards full-on NY The Quietus,

Description Dungen, torch bearers of Sweden’s rich and fabled history of pastoral psychedelia, return with En Ä r För Mycket Tusen Nog, the band’s first full-length album since 2015’s Allas Sak Creating their own critical and fervent, fan-based lane for guitar-powered, melodic and magisterial rock ‘n’ roll with their 2004 break out album Dungen have since left a staggering array of albums and a prodigious live presence in the embers of their burning wake. En Ä r För Mycket och Tusen Aldrig Nog (English translation: “One is too much and a thousand is not enough”) finds Dungen’s core four members Gustav Ejstes, Reine Fiske, Mattias Gustavsson, and Johan Holmegard in pure form, their now decades deep collaboration in total focus and elevated to new heights unobstructed by the spirits that once haunted and shaped the band’s music.

Times, NPR,

Born in Ipswich, England to a military father and operasinger mother Bartees had a peripatetic early childhood before eventually settling in Mustang, Oklahoma. Later, Bartees cut his teeth playing in hardcore bands in Washington D.C. and Brooklyn whilst working in the Barack Obama administration and (eventually) the environmental movement. Since charting a path as a solo artist, Bartees Strange has released two records in quick succession: an EP reimagining songs by The National (Say Goodbye To Pretty Boy, 2020) and his debut album proper Live Forever (2020).

“An aura of tender hope...there is a relinquishing--a promise to embrace the possibility that lies beyond debilitating regret.” - NY Times

Farm to Table, the second album from Washington D.C. resident Bartees Leon Cox Jr. examines Bartees’ constantly shapeshifting relationship with life. Where his 2020 debut record Live Forever introduced the experiences and places that shaped Bartees (Flagey Brussels, Mustang Oklahoma), Farm to Table zeros in on the people – specifically his family – and those closest to him on his journey so far. It also speaks to a deeper lore that says don’t forget where you came from. With his career firmly on the ascent, Bartees is celebrating the past, moving towards the future and fully appreciating the present. An unapologetic and braggadocious indie-trap banger, new single ‘Cosigns’ celebrates Bartees’ peers, collaborators and friends; name-checking the likes of Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Courtney Barnett, Lucy Dacus, through a genre-defying outpouring somewhere between swaggering hip hop and euphoric alt rock. The song ends on a poem he wrote in his early twenties, “I don’t know how to be full, it’s the hardest to know, I keep consuming I can’t give it up, It’s never enough.” ‘Cosigns’ is also a moment for Bartees to acknowledge himself, giving himself credence and unashamedly basking in that glow.

Highlights Instrumental album rich in spirituality with a decidedly mellow hue. Lead and directed by living legend Marshal Allen (98) who has been the musical director of the Arkestra since 1995. As a featured soloist with the Arkestra, Marshall pioneered the avant-garde jazz movement of the early 60s, influencing all leading avant-garde saxophonists thereafter.

Recorded during the pandemic in Philadelphia, this album is the first new recording since the group’s Grammy nomination in 2021. Features a total of nineteen musicians including a strings section.

“Somebody

First studio recording of Sun Ra’s elaboration of “Prelude in A Major” of the Frédéric Chopin miniature Opus 28 No. 7 which previously appeared on only a few live recordings. Features Marshall Allen’s “Day of the Living Sky”, a meditative work that is a belated response to Sun Ra’s composition “Night of the Living Sky” which is also featured in the album. (“Portrait of the Living Sky,” succinctly featured on the 1957 classic Supersonic Jazz.)

For more than two decades, the disciple that has most visibly carried on Sun Ra Arkestra’s legacy and sound is their musical director, alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, the iconic fire breather and life force that restored the Arkestra’s vitality in the massive vacuum left by Ra and John Gilmore’s death in the ‘90s. Allen turned 98 in 2022 and, as evidenced by Living Sky, his influence and leadership remain undiminished. Marking the Arkestra’s first new recording since their 2021 Grammy-nominated album Swirling, Living Sky was recorded on June 15, 2021 at Rittenhouse SoundWorks in Philadelphia and features a total of nineteen musicians, including a strings section. It was mixed and mastered by threetime Grammy winner Dave Darlington (Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch, Wayne Shorter).

They’re joined at times by Farid Barron’s floridly dissonant piano, by brass interjections, by flute trills, and by wavery strings, each adding its own contribution until, like a caravan at sunset, the tune settles into a resting place.

The Sun Ra Arkestra conjures a loose communality, the feeling of mavericks gathering for a shared purpose. When the Arkestra recorded “Somebody Else’s Idea” during Sun Ra’s lifetime, June Tyson sang lyrics like “Somebody else’s idea of things to come/Need not be the only way.” The current Arkestra, led by the saxophonist Marshall Allen, reclaims the song without words, as a leisurely bolero with saxophones or wordless voices carrying the succinct melody over Afro-Caribbean percussion.

…the only voice on the track is a deep hum, moving in unison with the song’s main, mesmeric progression as smoothly screeching saxophone, calmly caterwauling trumpets, and deliciously dissonant strings swarm in perfect, discordant harmony at the high end. - THE FADER

Listeners have looked to Sun Ra’s Arkestra for outward bound possibilities in music that grapples with earthly mayhem by embracing other galaxies. Yet their music has always been grounded by the human spirit. In this first new recording since the pandemic, Allen and company give us something we can hold onto, an instrumental album rich in spirituality guiding us through the unknown yet again.

Most Normal opens with an absolute industrial-noise banger that sounds like a manic house-party throbbing through the walls of the next room as a downed jetliner brings death from above. What follows is unpredictable, leading the listener through a sonic house of mirrors, where the unexpected awaits around every corner. The common thread holding Most Normal ’s ambitious Avantpop shapes together is frontman Dara Kiely. Throughout, he’s an antic, antagonistic presence, barking wild, hilarious, unsettling spiels, babbling about smearing fish with lubricant or dressing up in bin-liners or having to wear hand-me-down boot-cut jeans (“It was a big, shameful thing, growing up, not being able to afford the look I wanted and having to wear all my brother’s old clothes”, says Kiely).

The group also fell under the spell of modern hip-hop, “where there’s really heavy-handed production and they’re messing with the track the whole time,” says Fox. “That felt like a fun route to go down, it was a definite influence.”

GILLA BAND LP: RT-0358-LP

Most Normal, then, is a triumph, the bold work of a group who’ve taken the time to evolve their ideas, to deconstruct and reconstruct their music and rebuild it into something new, some thing challenging and infinitely rewarding. It’s a headphone masterpiece. It’s a majestic exploration of the infinite possibilities of noise. It’s a bold riposte to your parochial beliefs on whatever a pop song can or should be. It’s the best work these musicians have put to (mangled) tape.

October 7th, 2022 The TheCapgrasBinGushieBackwashEightGumFiversLinerFashionWeirds I Was PostPratfallRedAlmostAwaySoonPoloNeckRyan TRACKLISTING “...as raucous, pile-driving, Dadaist and primal as we’ve come to expect from the Dublin outfit” –“AnBillboardaddictive kind of noise” – The “They’veGuardianoutdone themselves this time” – NME PRESS CD: RT-0358-CD Most Normal 134 GRAND ST, NYC 10013 ROUGHTRADERECORDS.COM 505 ENO STREET HILLSBOROUGH NC 27278 REDEYEWORLDWIDE.COM877.733.3931

For their first album as Gilla Band, (formerly Girl Band) the foursome has redrawn their own paradigm. Most Normal is like little you’ve heard before, a kaleidoscopic spectrum of noise put in service of broken pop songs, FX-strafed Avant-punk rollercoaster rides and passages of futurist dancefloor nihilism.

Covid lockdown robbed Gilla Band of any opportunity to try the new material out live, but the pandemic also incinerated any idea of a deadline for the new album. They were free to tinker at leisure, to rewrite and restructure and reinvent tracks they’d cut – to, as drummer Adam Faulkner puts it, “pull things apart and be like, ‘Let’s try this. We could try out every wild idea.”

“There’s this unspoken rule in modern music -- modern life, really -- that everything needs to be Auto-Tuned and ‘on the grid,’” Warren concludes. “This record is an act of resistance against that. There’s beauty and power in our aberrations, if we can embrace them.” NC 877-733-3931

“I think it’s a mistake to equate ‘perfection’ with flawlessness. To be human is to be perfectly flawed,” Johanna Warren observes while describing the joys of analog recording. Her new LP Lessons for Mutants was tracked live with a band to two inch tape -- a revelatory new way of working for Warren. “Tape forces you to commit to a performance, eccentricities and all. The little glitches and anomalies that we’re tempted to ‘correct’ are often what make a thing Lessonsmagical.”for Mutants is the prolific songwriter’s sixth solo LP and her second for Wax Nine/ Carpark Records. The album’s running theme of metamorphosis (the title of the closing track, “Involvulus,” is Latin for “caterpillar”) reflects major changes in Warren’s personal life: after a decade of relentless touring, as the world was closing its borders, the American multi-instrumentalist unexpectedly found herself quarantining in rural Wales, where she’s now permanently homesteading. Though tracking for the new album began in New York in 2018 in tandem with the sessions for 2020’s Chaotic Good, the majority of Lessons for Mutants was recorded in the UK surrounded by sheep, cows and a forager’s paradise of wild edible plants -- a far cry from the urban jungle of LA that Warren had most recently called home. The body of work that emerged from this dramatic about-face is Warren’s most dynamic to date, shapeshifting seamlessly from searing punk screams to sparkly psych-folk soundscapes, from the bootleg ambivalence of Dylan’s Basement Tapes to cosmic stoner grooves reminiscent of Black Sabbath’s acoustic moments.

“Sometimes I can relate to myself/I disassociate more than I’d like to, but what can you do?” Warren croons in “Tooth for a Tooth,” a wistful piano ballad that conjures the grainy romance of some smoke-filled 1940s jazz club. This kind of to-the-bone lyrical honesty has always been one of Warren’s strong suits, but these latest reflections are especially unflinching. Being forced to stop touring brought no shortage of self-examination for Warren, who quickly came to view her history on the road as an addiction from which she’s been detoxing. This sentiment dances through opening track “I’d Be Orange,” a drum-driven indie rock number replete with Beatlesesque male backing vocals: “Thirst for power, hunger for fame/ Always was a junkie for pain,” Warren confesses. This exploration of masochistic ambition and artistic martyrdom overflows into grunge anthem “Piscean Lover”: “It’s alright, we’re not ok/ We burn out not to fade away.”

3. VIOLENT

After years of visiting graveyards, combing through haunted houses, and pursuing (heh heh) dead ends, we finally tracked down the rights to the legendary Frankie Stein and His Ghouls series! Why did we risk life, limb, and livelihood to find these records?

Formed from putrefying remnants of The Germs, The Consumers, The Bags, The Gun Club, and The Screamers among other L.A. punk outfits, 45 Grave were arguably the first American Goth/deathrock band and inarguably one of the best. Fronted by the Exene-meets-Barbarella vocal and visual stylings of Dinah Cancer (still one of the greatest stage names in a punk rock genre full of ‘em), 45 Grave also featured Paul B. Cutler on guitar, Don Bolles on drums, Rob (Ritter) Graves on bass, and Paul Roessler on keyboards, and from that all-star line-up came 1983’s Sleep in Safety, their lone studio release and only recording with the band’s original members. Probably most famous for the first appearance of the horrifyingly graphic, true-crime track “Partytime,” the single version of which was subsequently cut in 1985 and featured on The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack, Sleep in Safety also offered the early MTV track “Evil” and the band “theme song” “45 Grave” among other blandishments for those who like their rock and roll with a side of the macabre. For our Real Gone Music exhumation of this classic record, we have “embalmed” a very special edition, preserving the original album’s gatefold jacket complete with lyrics and adding a custom inner sleeve drawn from the band’s very rare “A Tale of Strange Phenomena” press release—purple with black streaks vinyl! Folks have been dying for this one!

You wouldn’t think that Halloween records released by a subsidiary (Power Records) of a children’s specialty label (Peter Pan Records) would be so…er…visceral, but these records are definitely the most out there of their kind. And there might be a reason for that…you see, it has been revealed that the Power label enlisted the aid of some very, very interesting musicians for some of its projects. For instance, the imprint’s 1966 album Batman and Robin by The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale was actually produced by Tom Wilson of Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, and Mothers of Invention fame—and the band was made up of free jazz legend Sun Ra and members of The Blues Project! Which has led to all sorts of speculation about who Frankie Stein and His Ghouls actually were; among the names bandied about are guitarist Duane Eddy, jazz saxophonist Max Greger, and, yes, Sun Ra and the Blues Project again. At any rate, prepare yourself for frenetic rock-and-twist workouts punctuated by deranged howls and shattering sound effects. And with a back story like Introducing Frankie Stein and His Ghouls has, it is of course insanely collectible and goes for big bucks online. Honey and the Bees’ 1970 Album Love Is One of the Great Lost Albums of Philly Soul

One of the great, lost albums of Philly Soul! And we mean really lost…we had to go to Italy and pay close to 500 euros to snag a copy for artwork. Jean Davis, Gwen Oliver, and Cassandra Wooten were known as The Yum-Yums when they auditioned for Arctic label founder Jimmy Bishop, who re-christened them as Honey and the Bees and added Nadine Felder to the line-up as lead vocalist. After Arctic folded, they moved to the Jubilee imprint Josie, where they recorded this 1970 gem. With a name like Honey and the Bees, it’ll come as no surprise that Love is pure, sweet soul, and it’s the Philly Sound through and through, with arrangements by greats like Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Bobby Martin. The medley of Teddy Randazzo tunes culminating in a gorgeous rendition of the Royalettes hit “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle” is the highlight, but the whole record is pure magic, so good that we enlisted Mike Milchner of Sonic Vision to remaster it for vinyl to ensure that every note breathes and sings. “If Haino is Hendrix caterwauling through the multiverse, Sumac are the Experience bringing him back into our atmosphere, burning without disintegrating. And while Haino and Turner are the marquee names, it’s drummer Nick Yacyshyn who holds it all down. Sumac lets him break free from the steady d-beat hand needed for his other band, Vancouver hardcore group Baptists, loosening up without compromising intensity.” -Pitchfork Thrill Jockey Records is proud to present Into This Juvenile Apocalypse Our Golden Blood to Pour Let Us Never, the third collaborative album by Japanese free music provocateur KeijiHaino and expressionist metal trio SUMAC Into This Juvenile Apocalypse... finds the quartet navigating the push-and-pullof creative interplay with bolder strides and stronger chemistry.

SUMAC’s tenure is much younger than Haino’s, though guitarist-vocalist Aaron Turner has covered a similarly large swath of musicalterritory across numerous projects and collaborations. From thesedated drones of recent projects with Daniel Menche and William Fowler Collins, to the modern compositions of Mamiffer and all the way back to the restless evolutions of post-metal stalwarts ISIS With his cohorts Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists, Erosion) on drums and Brian Cook (Russian Circles) on bass, Turner has dissolved the rigidforms of heavy music, searching for a balance between disciplinedprecision and unhinged musical barbarism, crafting music thatvacillates between meticulously detailed instrumentation anduninhibited forays into oblique abstraction.

Recorded on May 21, 2019 at the Astoria Hotel on Vancouver BC’snotorious East Hastings Street as a one-off performance duringa short North American tour for Haino, the six compositions comprising Into This Juvenile Apocalypse... showcase a musical unit bouncing unfiltered ideas off of one another, mining a trove oftextures and timbres from their armory to buoy and bolster theseliving and breathing pieces. Like so many albums documentingfree music, the thrill here is in the tight rope walk, the waveringmoments of uncertainty, and the ecstatic moments of sharedbrilliance.

Composed of best friends and co-conspirators Asha and Louis, joined by drummer Lincoln Barrett, multi-instrumentalist Campbell Baum, and Marco Pini on electronics, Sorry have been making music together since their teens. Emerging from Brixton’s Windmill scene, where they played alongside Shame, Goat Girl and Black Midi, Sorry have created their own distinctive musical world - one that draws together a shared passion for lo-fi sounds of grunge, trap, and shoegaze.

London features as a prominent character on the album. Earwigged conversations, text messages, snatched speech recorded underground; the city’s discarded words fed into the lyrics which map the experience of urban life on a young and frustrated generation. But this is a different city to 925’s, told through the voices of two people in their early 20s whose lives have become insular. “If our first version of London in 925 was innocent and fresh-faced, then this is rougher around the edges. It's a much more haggard place,” Louis says. For Asha, the intensity of the last two years was challenging: ”I just did what everyone else did, I went a bit mad.”

Though initially formed as an extension of the lifelong friendship between guitarist Isaac DeBroux-Slone and bassist Raina Bock, Disq has evolved into a far more egalitar ian organization, as Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet nds guitarists Logan Severson and Shannon Conor splitting singing and songwriting duties with Debroux-Slone and Bock. Such an approach could have easily fallen into the trap of “satisfying everyone, pleasing no one,” but happily, the opposite is true. Disq has emerged a stronger band, more daring and more de ant, ready to nish the job. Wrangling a melange of styles such as this is no simple task, but Desperately Imagin ing Someplace Quiet is held together by the powerful yet nimble rhythm section of Bock and drummer Stu Manley, whose muscular and hyperactive playing alternately keeps these adventurous compositions tethered rmly to the Earth and sends them soaring into stratosphere. Producer Matt Schuessler rarely lets a verse or chorus go by without adding some new sonic sparkle, keeping the arrangements an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of textures and moods. If there is a record in 2022 which squeezes more ideas into 41 minutes, then that record could surely only be the unlistenable mess that Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet avoids becoming so deftly.

Pushing play on Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet, it is easy to imagine that it is the year 1998, and your cool older sister has returned from her freshman year at college only to hand you the sort of mind-altering mixtape out of which lifelong rock fanatics are born. Though, things being how they are in the world today, the idea of nding “someplace quiet” feels like an increasingly remote possibility, and the act of imagining such a place does, indeed, feel more and more desperate. With Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet, Disq take a valiant stand against the temptation of complacency. As for that “someplace quiet?” It will have to wait... it's about to get loud in here. With saxophonist Jon Irabagon, pianist Matt Mitchell, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Rudy Royston, the group has forged a unique language that is a sound all their own. Their new album, Songs of Ascent: Book 1 - Degrees, is a riff on these 15 psalms -fascinating, somewhat mysterious works which inspired the composer. All of Douglas’ pieces were all written around these psalms, except “Let Me Go,” which was written on the day Dave decided to take on project. The eight pieces comprise an album that is both high energy and introspective at the same time. Irabagon’s playing on tenor and soprano saxes as well as alto clarinet creates a wide range of timbres and colors. The bands intuitive call and response, dialogic playing is evident from the first note to the last. There are 16 Songs of Ascent, split into two books - the subsequent 8 are on a companion disc subtitled Steps, which is immediately available to members of Greenleaf Music.

SAM MOSS BLUES APPROVED CD STREET DATE 01/28/2022 TRACK LISTING Rooster Blood King of My Hill Ain’t That Peculiar Vida Blanche If You See My Baby Trying to Do Better To Those Still at Sea My Man NightflightMike Over Berlin ActPJ PleasantNaturallyValley Sunday Can’t Get Used to Losing You Who’s Driving Your Plane? FOR FANS OF: ZZ TOP, ROLLING STONES, LET’S ACTIVE, CHRIS STAMEY/DB’S “GREAT LOST” ALBUM BY N.C. LEGEND SAM MOSS IS DISCOVERED, MIXED FOR DELUXE RELEASE JANUARY 28, 2022, ON CD AND VINYL.

But the material then sat on the shelf, unreleased, as Moss opened a vintage guitar store, selling internationally to rock stars and other celebrities for several decades. Stamey felt that most of the material seemed fully formed on its own, despite the limited recording options then available, but for a few tracks — the openers “Rooster Blood” and “King of My Hill,” and the Stonesy “Vida Blanche” — he enlisted the help of the Uptown Horns’ leader Crispin Cioe, a veteran of Rolling Stones tours whose Southern-fried additions on sax fit the material like a glove. And once a few later covers were added to the picture, including the captivating, bluesy spin taken with “Ain’t That Peculiar” featuring “Weso” Wesolowski on harp, the record was complete. Contemporary technology was used to reassemble the various generations of four-track tapes into first-generation sources, peeling back the layers to put the listener back in the room where it happened. The mono closing track, featuring a teenage Moss in his first band singing Buck Owens’s “Act Naturally” in rehearsal, was too cool not to include. The CD has three additional surprises from early-’90s sessions at Turtle Tapes in Winston-Salem: the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” an instrumental of Pomus and Shuman’s “Can’t Get Used to Losing You,” and the Stones’ “Who’s Driving Your Easter:Plane?”“Ihad a pretty good memory of this material, but when I actually heard it again, I was delighted that it really is great. Sam was always strangely unconcerned about stardom, but he was a star anyway. When you play the record, you'll see what I mean.” On July 30, 2021, the City of Winston-Salem honored Moss with a sidewalk star in the city’s Walk of Fame downtown. Original sessions produced by Sam Moss; produced and mixed for Release by Chris Stamey (with input from Gene Holder and Mitch Easter) at Modern Recording (Chapel Hill, N.C.)

Moss had made the first of several trips to nearby Chapel Hill to record his own original compositions in early 1977, with old friend Easter on drums (and recording). Mitch recalls: “In my house I had a ‘studio,’ meaning a Teac 2340 four-track recorder, three or four humble microphones, and for monitoring, the home stereo system. For extra-fancy sessions, I’d rent a Tapco six-channel mixer … Sam came down with two or three guitars, his Fender Twin. I played drums and Sam played everything else. And it was a really good session! Sam wrote interesting songs that almost always had a blues angle, but he brought in a lot of elements from elsewhere. He was pleased with the results, so we met a couple more times that year and recorded an LP’s worth of songs.”

Chris Stamey locates and restores album by regionally renowned guitarist and mentor CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In Winston-Salem, N.C., guitarist Sam Moss is a legend. A superior, highly versatile musician whose advocacy for the blues and mastery of the nuances of electric blues-based soloing somewhat paralleled Mike Bloomfield’s in Chicago, Moss was an inspiring, charismatic mentor to generations of North Carolina rockers, including Let’s Active and The dB’s. He was a larger-than-life character whose club appearances astounded local audiences, yet he never released a record in his lifetime. So, producer Chris Stamey was thrilled to discover, in 2020, on the end of an old tape, forgotten masters of Blues Approved, a spectacular Stax- and Muscle Shoalsinfluenced solo record, made with Mitch Easter in 1977. This “great lost” record reveals that Moss was also a soulful songwriter and singer. It has now been carefully remixed and produced for release, with a deluxe booklet featuring detailed liner notes and bio, session notes by Easter, and lots of vivid color photos. Peter Holsapple (The dB’s) says, “Sam Moss was an inspiration to so many of us; with the release of Blues Approved, people everywhere will understand why.” Blues Approved will be released on CD and digitally by Schoolkids Records on January 28, 2022, with a vinyl edition to follow in the summer.

You can’t think of Ernie K-Doe without thinking of “Mother-In-Law,” his 1961 chart-topper and the only pop hit on his resumé. As this disc proves so well, K-Doe recorded many great sides. Those unfamiliar with K-Doe’s career will undoubtedly get knocked out by “A Certain Girl” and “’Tain’t It the Truth,” two classics of New Orleans R&B. Toussaint’s soulful, infectious arrangements wonderfully complement K-Doe’s eccentric vocals, guiding the singer through the twisted narrative of Southern soul from the mud-baked Memphis sound of Stax (“Whoever Is Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)”) to the Crescent City funk of the Meters (“Lawdy Mama”) and beyond. What K-Doe lacks as a traditional vocalist he more than compensates for as a pure entertainer, and it’s impossible to imagine cuts like the sex-crazed “Here Come the Girls” achieving such libidinous transcendence in the hands of a more conventional performer.

Peel Dream Magazine “Pad” Label: Slumberland Records Catalog Number: SLR 272 Street Date: October 7, 2022

Joe Stevens' Peel Dream Magazine project has dazzled savvy listeners for the last several years with its tuneful yet hypnotic synthesis of post-punk, shoegaze, 60s pop and motorik kosmische grooves. Their most recent salvo of the album Agitprop Alterna and companion EP Moral Panics was one of the few bright spots of a pandemic-wracked 2021.

Now Stevens is back with Pad, an altogether more conceptual work informed by his own journey in and out of Peel Dream, his experiences with soundtrack scoring, and his abiding love of Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson and The High Llamas. Pad draws on influences from baroque pop to Bossa Nova, folk and mid-century orchestral, from Burt Bacharach-era 60s pop to first wave homemade post-punk. It's a unique sound that is at once relaxing and engaging and makes a most satisfying next step in the Peel Dream Magazine trajectory.

File Alternative P TL; DR: Peel Dream trade their motorik drone for lovely, burbling baroque folk/pop. “Pad” is conceptually playful and sensuously subterranean, blurring the line between blithe escapism and pointed subversion. Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. (formerly Ducks Unlimited), the bright jangle-pop duo of Tom McGreevy (lead vocal, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Evan Lewis (guitar, bass, drum programming), accomplish the impossible. The pair craft songs that play to very specific inspirations without drowning underneath them—immediately evidenced on their critically acclaimed EP, Get Bleak, and sharpened on Modern Fiction, their debut LP. “The Servants, The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Television Personalities, Felt,” Evan rattles off. “Look Blue Go Purple is one I reference a lot with our production.” Echoes of ‘80s indiepop abound, but they never overwhelm. This is not a nostalgic record, after all, nor is it a derivative one. Instead, across 10 cheery-sounding songs, Ducks Ltd. explore contemporary society in decline, examining large scale human disaster through personal turmoil (hence the title, taken from a university course called Gnosticism and Nihilism in Modern Fiction, influenced by Graham Greene novels. Bookish indie fans, look no Writingfurther.)the album was intimate. Tom drafted the nucleus of a song on an unplugged electric guitar and brought it over to Evan’s apartment, where the pair sat in his bedroom, placing percussive beats from a drum machine under nascent melodies, passing a bass back and forth, adding organs and bridges where necessary. “It’s computer music trying extremely hard not to sound like computer music,” Tom jokes. Fearful that limited and expensive studio time would kneecap the project creatively, eroding their charming naivete, the pair re-recorded the album in a storage space owned by Evan’s boss. Ornamentation through collaboration followed: there’s Aaron Goldstein on Pedal Steel in the Go-Betweens’ “Cattle and Cane”-channeling interlude “Patience Wearing Thin,” Eliza Niemi on cello (“18 Cigarettes,” a song loosely inspired by a 1997 Oasis performance of “Don’t Go Away”), and backing harmonies from Carpark labelmates The Beths (on an ode to friendship at a distance, “How Lonely Are You?,” “Always There,” and on the sped-up Syd Barrett stylings of “Under The Rolling Moon.”) While in his native Australia due to covid-19, Evan worked closely with producer James Cecil (The Goon Sax, Architecture in Helsinki) on Modern Fiction’s finishing touches—at one point, in the mountains of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, recorded a string quartet (featured on “Fit to Burst,” “Always There,” “Sullen Leering Hope,” “Twere Ever Thus,” “Grand Final Day.”)

It’s danceable, depressive fun, with some relief: in “Always There” and “Sullen Leering Hope,” Modern Fiction’s faithful heart. “There’s a tendency in my writing, because of my world view, to be very bleak.” Tom explains. “A quality I don’t always see in myself and really appreciate in others is the courage to go on.” And yet, the record manages resiliency—enough for pop fans to fall in love with.REDEYE 505 Eno Street Hillsborough, NC 877-733-3931 carparkrecords.com

And suddenly! With a tactile clunk, Bajascillators bubbles to the surface.

The Bajas is back.

Bajascillators arrives almost five years since their last official full-length, 2017’s Bajas Fresh. In the eight years prior, from 2010 to Fresh, Bitchin Bajas issued seven albums, plus cassettes, EPs, singles wave after wave of analogue synth tones and zones extending into a stratospheric arc. Each release its own headspace, shape and timbre, each one sliding naturally into their implacable, eternal gene pool. Following the flow, always, the Bajas went ever-deeper-and-higher on these records, whether making soundtracks or collaborating with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, using only fortune cookie fortunes as a libretto. Plus engagement, with a steady stream of shows and tours around the world; live re-airings and expansions of the space captured in their records as they continued to grow and flow all the way through, really, to the present moment. Plus, there have been releases since 2017 a split 12”, a 7” single, digital track release and two “Cuts ” cassettes, plus the all-covers cassette release Switched On Ra. But the overall number of releases, plus the five years between long players, implies a potential distance between phases, a new line in the sand. The sound of Bajascillators bear this out. How couldn’t it? Compared to 2017, this is a different world and, as has everlutionary been true, in case of new world, new Bajas! Bajascillators, then, necessarily reflects the experiences the changed and the changing in the life and times of Bitchin Bajas these last five years. Like all the new gear, for instance! Everything from keys to mic pres, and many other machines to make their home setup an increasingly real thing. These bits and pieces came in and needed time to grow into the setup organically. That was time. Then add in the changing circumstances as they jammed from week to week, hearing things differently all the time. Different energies manifested from the variety of new possibilities to explore all of that led to a massive buildup of material. That was time. Then reviewing everything they had, to find paths into the new record. More time! And yet, after all that, the unprecedented lightness of the space in Bajascillators belies the long gestation period, drawing and juxtaposing from all the moments that needed to be, and mixing them as one with immaculate balance.

“Amorpha”, a side-long shower of synthetic bells and bass, as patterns interlock and repeat and the beat within the barlines shifts constantly, forms a new, latest miniature of infinity. You flip it, and “Geomancy” resets you, starting anew, with heavy drift and drone leading into a space of shorter broken lines and middle-eastern tonalities, that roll back into ether again — new spaces, but mysteriously consonant with the vibe. And that’s how it goes side by side, Bajascillators rolls four unique numbers that act on their own AND as extensions of each other, phases in perfect flow. Each time, as the needle cradles into the playout groove, you the listener are becalmed, in stasis, forever changed. Until you flip the side and forever changes again…

WhenBoilIntroFirstOrangeAnnOutroBill Nace

Bill Nace’s Through a Room represents a seismic pro gression from Both, his star tling 2020 debut solo LP for Drag City. Nace’s career has been defined by a relentless probing of ways to frame the complex menu of hu man emotions, and that the guitar has been his primary tool for exploring this terrain is of little consequence. On this new release, he also employs tapes, hurdy gurdy, doughnut pipe, quelle est belle, as well as his latest instrument significant. What matters is the discerning spirit ly built from loops and phrases that talk to each other, subsume one another, overlapping and crashing and diving and expanding and emerg ing into unimagined vistas. On the whole, the re cord offers a fascinating and engrossing chroni cle — a sequence of interrelated stories told by a temporally dislodged narrator. You think you’re here, then you’re there, and then you go through trapdoors and along tunnels, into cellars and secret rooms, and you find that actually you’re back where you started. But it’s not hard to fol ing can be hard to follow. ited in Philadelphia during the uncertain summer of 2021 with engineer and co-producer Cooper Crain. Where Both was a chiseling down of spontaneous live perfor mance, Through a Room, while ob viously the work of the same artist, treats its sounds as building blocks, combining them to mesmerizing effect. What’s striking is false dichotomy of composition and improvisa tion is thoroughly and rightfully abolished. Bill’s interests range from post-punk to post-industri al to hip-hop to free jazz to avant-garde com position, and every area between such unhelp ful labels. From the inscrutable, evocative track titles to the enticingly baffling cover art by his longtime compatriot Daniel Higgs , Nace is guid ed by an ineffable, internal muse, a persistently personal stormcloud of ideas that, ultimately, comprise that thing we call art. Here’s the real deal.

LP is limited to 1000 copies on Blue Transparent vinyl. Working with Paul Weller as producer and co-writer on his 5th studio album, Liverpool troubadour Steve Pilgrim releases the achingly melancholic “Beautiful Blue” on Ltd Vinyl and CD. The album features Paul Weller, Steve Craddock and Rachael Jean Harris with string arrangements from Hannah Peel. These sketches of songs, melodies and chord progressions became the beginning of a co writing direction for Pilgrim/ Weller and took the material to a new place, tugging and pushing the softly spoken Scouser in new ways that only Weller could provoke. Tunes such as ‘Test of Faith’, ‘Don’t Let The Mirror Break You’, ‘One With All’, ‘Universe’ and ‘Where Our Love Goes’ have echoes of Pilgrim ’s previous work, but add a warmth and classicism found in his co -writer’s celebrated ‘True Meanings’ record. “By the time the pandemic arrived in 2020 the songs were ready and Paul suggested we start recording the album at his studio in Woking. With the assistance of house engineer and sonic wizard Charles Rees, within three days we had the bulk of the record done. We had ‘Beautiful Blue’ and everything was going to be ok. ” With the aural assistance of string arrangements from the renowned Hannah Peel, ‘Beautiful Blue’ is the work of an artist who finds strength in still life and shouts loudest when whispering. The songs on this album are streamlined, lacking fat and offer intricate acoustic guitar playing weaving in and out of memorable melodies (‘New Sky’), undulating strings (the gorgeous title track) and devastatingly delicate vocal harmonies (‘Everyday’).

“This set of songs took a while to complete as I wanted to impose thematic constraints on my writing. I knew it was important to stay focused and that ’s when the message from Paul arrived. What an honour. The songs might now be written, but they couldn ’t be realised without listeners it would be great to see you at a gig.”

Hefner - Dead Media Its At Is 5060853700897 400 black vinyl 12”. In their relatively brief lifetime, between 1996 and 2002, Hefner enjoyed an incredibly productive four album, multi EP career. Their beautiful, concise, intelligent songs earned a fiercely loyal, cult audience and the long term support of legendary DJ John Peel, for whom they recorded innumerable sessions. Originally released in 2001, their final album, Dead Media, found Hefner reaching out and taking risks. Keen to break free of their indie folk roots, they cocooned themselves in a home studio with broken analogue synthesizers, antique drum machines and battery powered amplifiers. The band’s naivety and guile produced some curiously engaging music, with frontman Darren Hayman ’s precise, economic, poetic dissections of quotidian romance draped over awkward, fuzzy beats: something like Cat Stevens covering Warm Leatherette. Dead Media caused confusion at the time and ultimately lead to the band ’s break up. However, the songs like ‘Junk’, ‘The Night’s Are Long’ and ‘When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines ’ are among Hayman’s most adult and affecting essays and stand out among the finest of Hefner ’s achievements The Angels Their Drum Machines

The Orchids – Dreaming Kind Skep Wax Records LP SKEPWAX007LP 5055869549332 CD SKEPWAX007CD 5055869549349

LP on classic black vinyl. The long awaited new album from the best pop band in Scotland... The Orchids were making sophisticated pop music right back in the early 1990s when Sarah Records first started. Their songs were as emotionally pure as anything else on that label, but they were always a step ahead of their peers in terms of song arrangements and musical ambition. With a casual, unpretentious air they made writing perfect pop songs seem easy, almost accidental, and several great releases followed. The Orchids gained a passionate following: people knew a good thing when they heard it and they hugged it close. But maybe now it ’s time for the rest of the world to be let in on the secret. The songs themselves are a beautiful mix of strength and gentleness. They wrap you in a powerful embrace, making you feel comfortable and secure and then whisper their insecurities and anxieties into your ear. They say: ‘it’s OK to admit weakness. It’s OK to be fragile. That ’s where true strength comes from ’. From Glasgow, and proudly Scottish, the band shares a musical lineage with other great groups from that city, from Aztec Camera to Orange Juice, Lloyd Cole to Teenage Fanclub - bands that specialise in song-writing that can tell big stories through small personal fragments, that can make the ordinary extraordinary. Ian Carmichael has helped the band create a perfectly produced masterpiece. He subtly accentuates the drama of the songs, with a sophisticated choreography and gloss that never overwhelms the tenderness of the music. In ‘This Boy Is A Mess’ (the first single from the album), the lyric confesses frailty while the arrangement gets stronger and stronger. It is bittersweet and exhilarating at the same time. ‘I Want You, I Need You’ has harmonies as big as a house but the yearning message remains intimate and close. ‘I Don’t Mean To Stare’ is an elegant version of the song that first appeared on Skep Wax compilation Under The Bridge. Album opener ‘Didn’t We Love You’ daringly opens up empty spaces where the reverb of the drums is the only thing you can hear... and then floods your ears with a harmonised chorus, sweet guitar melodies and sweeping effects. Even then, the lyrical lament, expressing the desire to live in a better place - a place unspoilt by the greedy phonies who ’ve taken over comes across as clearly as if Hackett were leaning over for a friendly chat in the snug bar of The Orchids ’ favourite Glasgow pub.

12” black vinyl, lyrics insert, edition of 250. Let ’s Whisper started many moons ago as a home recording project between Colin Clary and Dana Kaplan, during time off from their other outfit, The Smittens. Since then, the line up of the Vermont outfit has expanded, and now includes Brad Searles, The Essex Green ’s Jeff Baron and Emma Kupa of Mammoth Penguins/Standard Fare. In addtion, Jeff ’s bandmate from The Ladybug Transistor, Gary Olson, produced, engineered, plays trumpet and sings on the record. The In Between Times is a leap forward for Let ’s Whisper, taking the lush orchestration familiar to fans of The Essex Green and Ladybug Transistor. It’s a tender, brave, and earnest album, exploring grief, gender, and goodbyes. The times between pronounced transitions: life and death, pre to post testosterone, the storm to the calm after.
