MICHAELA ANNE DESERT DOVE WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: 9/27/19 Michaela Anne first began garnering national attention with the 2014 release of ‘Ease My Mind,’ hailed by The New York Times for its “plain-spoken songs of romantic regret and small-town longing” and named one of the year’s best country albums by The Village Voice. Of Michaela’s 2016 follow up, ‘Lights and the Fame’, NPR said “[Michaela] works through weepers and hits the honky-tonks as every great country singer should,” while Rolling Stone compared her to Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, and Vice Noisey praised her as the antidote to commercial pop country, calling her “our saving grace, our angel, the person who will help usher us into a new age.” Full of lush, sweeping arrangements and deeply vulnerable self-examination, Desert Dove is Michaela’s most expansive work yet. The album, produced by Sam Outlaw and Delta Spirit’s Kelly Winrich, is still very much rooted in the classic country she’s come to be known for—but the record represents something of a sonic shift for Michaela, incorporating more modern production elements than ever before in pursuit of a sound that owes as much influence to indie rock as honky tonk. Despite the bolder, more adventurous arrangements, Michaela’s crystalline voice remains front and center, as do her subjects: complex, three-dimensional characters who, through Michaela’s empathetic portraits, revel in exploring the gray areas between good and bad, joy and pain, love and regret. In the end, that vivid grounding in real experience coupled with outstanding songwriting and musicianship is what makes Desert Dove such an incredibly powerful record.

JACK KLATT IT AIN’T THE SAME WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: 9/27/19 Musical missionary, tireless troubadour and producer Jack Klatt isn’t one to be easily categorized or relegated to a narrow niche. He is a man with a wizened and worldly perspective, and a timeless sensibility of both place and purpose. His upcoming album It Ain’t The Same reflects a reverential attitude, but adds a depth and devotion that ensures its contemporary credence. With Klatt himself singing, playing guitar and sitting in the producer’s chair, it boasts the talents of session players John James Tourville (The Deslondes) on electric guitar and pedal steel, Casey McDonough (NRBQ) on bass, Alex Hall (JD McPherson, The Cactus Blossoms, Robbie Fulks) on drums, percussion, keys and engineering and Page Burkum’s harmonies. It Ain’t The Same is, as its title suggests, something truly special.

#30 IN ROLLING STONES’ 100 GREATEST GUITARISTS • KNOWN AS THE KING OF SLIDE GUITAR INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME 1992 Elmore James is known as the “King of the Slide Guitar.” He was inspired by the local performances of Robert Johnson to take up the guitar. In fact, it was a number by Johnson ("Dust My Broom") that became James’ signature song and laid the foundation for his recording career. First cut by James in August 1951, “Dust My Broom” contains the strongest example of his stylistic signature: a swooping, full-octave opening figure on slide guitar. His influence went beyond that one riff, however, as he has been credited with practically inventing blues rock by virtue of energizing primal riffs with a raw, driving intensity. James left behind a raft of classic blues songs that include “Shake Your Money Maker,” “Talk to Me Baby,” “It Hurts Me Too” and “The Sky Is Crying.” James’ distinctive style has influenced a legion of Chicago slide players, and his songs have been cut by the admiring likes of the Allman Brothers Band, Canned Heat, Fleetwood Mac and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. “You can hear his signature riff at least once a night from every slide guitarist working,” music historian Tony Glover has written, “but no one has ever quite matched that vocal intensity, which transformed the lonesome moan of the Delta into a Chicago scream.” DISC ONE THE SKY IS CRYING • HELD MY BABY LAST NIGHT • BOBBY’S ROCK • DUST MY BROOM • BABY PLEASE SET A DATE • ROLLIN’ AND TUMBLIN’ • I’M WORRIED DONE SOMEBODY WRONG • FINE LITTLE MAMA • I CAN’T STOP LOVIN’ YOU EARLY ONE MORNING • I NEED YOU • STRANGE ANGEL • SHE DONE MOVED SOMETHING INSIDE ME • STRANGER BLUES • ANNA LEE • BLEEDING HEART DISC TWO STANDING AT THE CROSSROADS • ONE WAY OUT • GOT TO MOVE • PERSON TO PERSON • SO UNKIND • MY KIND OF WOMAN • MY BABY’S GONE • FIND MY KINDA WOMAN • LOOK ON YONDER WALL • SHAKE YOUR MONEYMAKER MEAN MISTREATIN’ MAMA • SUNNYLAND • GO BACK HOME AGAIN YOU KNOW YOU’RE WRONG • HAND IN HAND • I HAVE A RIGHT TO LOVE MY BABY • EVERYDAY I HAVE THE BLUES • IT HURTS ME TOO DISC THREE TALK TO ME BABY • CAN’T STOP LOVING MY BABY • SHE’S GOT TO GO • PICKIN’ THE BLUES • TWELVE YEAR OLD BOY • UP JUMPED ELMORE • I BELIEVE • I GOTTA GO NOW • MAKE MY DREAMS COME TRUE • FIND MY KINDA WOMAN (alt) • MEAN MISTREATIN’ MAMA (alt) • YOU KNOW YOU DONE ME WRONG (alt of You Know You’re Wrong) • UP JUMPED ELMORE (BLACKSNAKE BLUES) (alt) • (POOR LITTLE) ANGEL CHILD—SAM MYERS • LITTLE GIRL—SAM MYERS • YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU WANT TO—MARSHALL JONES • WOKE UP HAPPY—MARSHALL JONES • BACK IN MISSISSIPPI (A CONVERSATION)

"Kenny Roby is one of the best American songwriters of the last 20 years" - Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood/Circles Around The Sun) "The world's a better place with Kenny Roby & 6 String Drag in it." - Steve Earle "'Memories & Birds' by North Carolina songwriter Kenny Roby floored me" - Citizen Cope in American Songwriter "So thrilled to have Kenny Roby & 6 String Drag back. They're as great as ever. Like reconnecting with a long lost friend." - Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) Roby is a genius and his work with 6 String Drag is the stuff of legends. Although they perform together every now and then, this album serves as a reason why they should be more consistent in staying together and playing such brilliant music. - SPILL MAGAZINE North Carolina native and Americana pioneer Kenny Roby has been making records and performing on stages for over 30 years. Early on, Roby’s punk band opened for Circles Jerks, 7 Seconds, Jane's Addiction and Suicidal Tendencies. In late 1992, shortly after a relocating to Raleigh, NC Roby formed a more roots/ alt-country band, 6 String Drag which showcased his influences of Buck Owens, Neil Young alongside Black Flag. The band eventually signed with Steve Earle's E-Squared Records and went on to tour with The Jayhawks, Buddy Miller, Whiskeytown, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Since 1999, Roby has released 4 solo records and 6SD reformed. In March of 2018 6SD released TOP OF THE WORLD which received airplay on NPR, Sirius XM's Outlaw Country and press coverage in Rolling Stone, All Music and No Depression. After a critically acclaimed self-titled first album, 6 String Drag signed with alt-country godfather and outlaw country music legend Steve Earle's E-Squared Records (Warner Brothers imprint) The band's second record HIGH HAT was produced by Earle as well. 6 String Drag went on to open for and tour with acts such as Earle, The Jayhawks, Buddy Miller, Whiskeytown, Blue Mountain, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, label-mates The V-Roys and many more. But a little more than a year after HIGH HAT was released and just as the band started to gain wider recognition and beginning to grow their fanbase within the burgeoning 90's alt-country/roots rock scene as well as in national press and radio, the band split up. Soon after the break-up Kenny Roby went on to record and release his first solo outing MERCURY'S BLUES in Europe in 1999 and in the US in early 2000. Between 1999 and 2013 Roby went on to record and release 4 solo records. Eventually 6 String Drag reformed in early 2014 and released their new album ROOTS ROCK 'N' ROLL in early 2015. In March of 2018 the band released TOP OF THE WORLD to more radio play on NPR, Sirius XM's Outlaw Country and press coverage in Rolling Stone, All Music, No Depression et al and reissued a 20th anniversary release of HIGH HAT. Roby is a songwriter's songwriter. He has been championed worldwide in the press, radio and by other songwriters such as Steve Earle, Neal Casal, Citizen Cope, Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) and even had his songs covered by roots music legend Michael Hurley who was an integral part of the Holy Model Rounders and was signed to Moses Asch to Folkways Records in the 1960s. Roby has signed multiple publishing deals as a songwriter including a stint with Warner-Chapel Music. In September 2019, Schoolkids Records will release TIRED OF FEELIN' GUILTY: 25 YEARS OF KENNY ROBY & 6 STRING DRAG as Roby continues to tour worldwide.

Minneapolis was their home turf. But in the decades that followed, appreciation for Distortions swelled to tidal wave proportions among fans of amped-up, ramped-up, balls-to-the-wall rock 'n' roll. Headlined by two red-hot, stone-cold killers, "Action Woman" and “Soul Searchin’"–both penned by producer Warren Kendrick–Distortions is arguably the greatest private-press garage band album of the era. The Litter formed in 1966 as a merger between two popular Twin Cities combos, the Victors and the Tabs. They quickly established a reputation as the wildest, loudest band on the scene. Bill Strandlof was responsible for the incendiary, feedback-laced guitar work on "Action Woman"–a local hit for the band when released as a single in January 1967–but by the summer he'd been replaced by another fast-fingered guitar slinger, Zippy Caplan. Caplan's fiery leads helped ignite the remainder of Distortions, including smoking interpretations of the Who's "Substitute," the Small Faces' "Whatcha Gonna Do About It," an intense reading of "Codine," and a comprehensive reconstruction-destruction of "I'm A Man."

Lola was born into a punk household (her father is Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus) and joined her first band, art-rock outfit Blackblack, when she was just 13. Halle and Izzy met playing in local bands in Northeast LA; Izzy was a guitarist and vocalist, and Halle liked to plug her fretless bass into a guitar amp. Uninspired by the masculine energy of the local scene and rock music on the radio — “pumped out like plastic bottles into the ocean” — Izzy ditched the guitar for a synth, and in 2017 she and Halle joined forces with Lola. They named themselves Automatic after a song by the Go-Go’s — the only all-female band to have written and played instruments on an album to reach #1 in the US. Their first single ‘Calling It’ captures the sensation of being adrift in a wide-open space and the desire to rip it all up and start over. Elsewhere on Signal, songs speak directly to the band members’ experiences: ‘Humanoid’ and ‘Too Much Money’ are observations of boredom, unhappiness and the disappointing falseness of social media personas, while ‘Signal’ is about being “trapped in the drudgery of a shitty life/job, and the realization that nobody is going to rescue you from it but yourself.” A shocking near-death freak accident in her apartment inspired Izzy to write ‘Electrocution’ — an experience alluded to on the album art, which depicts a switch on a red background.

Sui Zhen Losing, Linda Out September 27, 2019 on Cascine Albums by Melbourne-based artist Sui Zhen unfold like narratives from a dream — incredibly vivid (if slightly off-kilter) and revealing of deep personal truths. Her surreal synth-pop culls inspiration from bossa nova, Japanese city pop and the early electronic music of the 1980s, and is also interspersed with atmospheric soundscapes and spoken-word dance. Following her 2016 breakout Secretly Susan, she returns with a new long-player, Losing, Linda. It's an album about loss, both on the personal level (documenting the tragic loss of her mother in 2018) and on a broader, societal scale (the loss of selfhood in the digital age). Losing, Linda is a trip through the real and the uncanny — a lovingly personal and humanistic document of our ever-changing world, the things we lose along the way, and the insights we gain from loss itself.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

Lloyd McNeill Elegia

27th September 2019

Soul Jazz Records are releasing flautist Lloyd McNeill’s album ‘Elegia’ (1980). Originally released on the artists’ own private press Baobab label in New York, the album is a serious collectors’ piece, a heavyweight and fascinating fusion of deep spiritual jazz with Brazilian rhythms and melodies. The album has been out of print for nearly 40 years. This groundbreaking album is the culmination of Lloyd McNeill’s many years involved with Brazilian musicians and features the great percussionist Nana Vasconcelos alongside fellow Brazilians Portinho and Dom Salvador, and US jazz musicians including bassist Cecil McBee. In a 50-year musical career, McNeill has worked with many artists including Nina Simone, Eric Dolphy, Mulatu Asatke and Sabu Martinez. McNeill grew up during the era of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and his life and work is a reflection of those ideals. All of his music was only ever released on his own private-press record label, echoing the Civil Rights and African-American themes of the era – black economic empowerment and self-sufficiency – and there is a beautiful spirituality in all his music. In the late 1960s McNeill became a teacher of both jazz and painting at the New Thing Art and Architecture Center in Washington and in 1969 was the first African-American professor hired to teach African-American Music History, at Rutgers University. This is the fifth Lloyd McNeill album that Soul Jazz Records have released and follows on from the recent release of ‘Treasures’ (1976) and the earlier albums ‘Asha’ (1969), ‘Tanner Suite’ (1969) and ‘Washington Suite’ (1970), all of which are being re-pressed to coincide with this new release.

At the end of the 1970s, as dancehall exploded onto the island, Clement Dodd was once again able to maintain Studio One’s position on the throne as the number one sound in the Jamaica, fighting off upstart competitors such as Channel One and Joe Gibbs who tried to replicate Studio One’s unique sound. OVERVIEW James McVinnie is known as one of the worlds leading organists. His work as a performer encompasses music from the 16th century to the present day. He has collaborated with many leading figures in new music including Philip Glass, Angelique Kidjo, Nico Muhly, Martin Creed, Richard Reed Parry, Bryce Dessner, Darkstar, Hildur Guðnadóttir, David Lang, Sarah Davachi many of whom have written large scale works for him. Here he collaborates with Tom Jenkinson on eight pieces composed by Jenkinson specially for McVinnie. It was performed and recorded over one night in 2016 on the extraordinary and much-admired 1954 Harrison & Harrison organ at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Jenkinson has already established himself as a composer in his work with Charles Hazelwood and the London Sinfonia reimagining ‘Ufabulum’ for orchestra and also for the BBC composing a one hour piece ‘Daydreams’ on CBeebies, narrated by Olivia Coleman. ‘All Night Chroma’ further showcases the breadth of Jenkinson’s talent away from the electronic sounds that form the basis of his work as Squarepusher.

OMGay, Team Dresch is releasing an actual NEW SONG! It’s been 19 years since the band has released new material - 25 years since the making of Personal Best, when this particular configuration of players (Jody Bleyle, Donna Dresch, Kaia Wilson and Marcéo Martinez) recorded together. Your Hands My Pockets: Donna Dresch, in her typical Team Captain spirit, busts out riffs that are rife with her awesome signature grunge/punk/melodic catchiness, Jody and Kaia trade off on vocal duties like they’re in some frantic singing relay race, and Marcéo slams the toms around like he learned to drum from both Mel Brown and bam-bam (please note, Marcéo actually took drum lessons from Mel Brown in the 80’s). While “Your Hands” is an undeniable pop/punk song, it is also brimming with bristle and depth, conjuring feelings of longing, angst, desire. When Jody sings “Oh I wanna want to be wrapped around, to wrap around” there is NO ONE who can’t relate to this feeling of reaching out to one another for connection, touch, and love. Team Dresch KEEPS IT REAL (gay) with their harmonious musical chemistry, queercore spirit, and attention to detail in their musicianship - the alchemy of these humans is clearly still alive and dancing, you know it baby. 2xLP: ZIQ410. EAN: 5055300399564. CD: ZIQ410CD EAN: 5055300399571. Felix Lee has created a world for his debut album “Inna Daze”, a kind of post-human environment where the sun never really rises and everything is lit with a burnt out glow. These are survival ballads for the near future, whose vocals, mutated to fit into this setting, drift in a haze of dissociation. Musically, at first glance, it's sparse and minimal but with continued immersion, subtle iridescent-light shadows shimmer around grainy colour, sub bass rises through kicks and snares retooled from their surroundings, not so much refixed as decaying.

Felix has been here before in his incarnation as Lexxi, making his debut appearance on Total Freedom’s 2012 “Blasting Voice“ compilation, and as a co-producer on Elysia Crampton's “Demon City“ album. He then went on to release his first instrumental EP “5TARB01” in 2016 on his own imprint Endless. He also runs an NTS show of the same name, along with previously holding raves, cross pollinating and interacting with the vanguard of the electronic underground. The punky crunch of those earlier releases is reflected in tracks like “Smoke” made with long time collaborator and southside resident Kamixlo. These club moments inevitably give way to the vocals, conveying a feeling of loss and renewal. Intended to exist both inside and outside the club, it's an electronic music that at times feels like a skeletal take on shoegaze, solidifying that feeling with the intense rising synths of the album closer “Slow Decay“. Inna Daze's features include Drain Gang members Ecco2k and Whitearmor, Yayoyanoh, Quantum Natives' Oxhy, and Gaika, as well as Felix making his debut as a vocalist, his voice filtered through effects to give it a slippery, steam-like texture, echoing around the songs, giving them a second skin of sensed abstraction. One of the most thoughtful and interesting debuts of 2019, “Inna Daze“ beckons the listener into its simultaneously toxic and beautiful sound-world. Keeping enough distance to provoke more questions than answers, the album unfolds in a different way on every listen. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. MARIE DAVIDSON

Chasing The Light / Work It (Soulwax Remix) x Lara (Daniel Avery Remix) Available Now ZEN12518 Canadian electronic producer and performer Marie Davidson shares previously unreleased track ‘Chasing The Light’ on vinyl for the first time along with remixes by Soulwax and Daniel Avery, taken from her acclaimed album Working Class Woman. Marie Davidson’s album Working Class Woman has received critical acclaim since it’s release. The album has been nominated for the Polaris Prize 2019 Short List. Legendary Belgian duo Soulwax - otherwise known as 2manydjs propel Marie’s ‘Work It’ - a spoken text, tongue-in-cheek mantra for the workaholic generation - over their own inimitable reworking of the original track, while Daniel Avery (Phantasy Sound / Mute) delivers a dark, booming take on the “acidic adrenaline” (The Guardian) of ‘Lara’.

TRACKLISTING SIDE A 1. Chasing The Light SIDE B 1. Work It (Soulwax Remix) 2. Lara (Daniel Avery Remix)

Soulwax’s remix has become a summer hit, lighting up DJ sets and dance floors worldwide since its recent release in April 2019.
Industrial heaviness is balanced by Marie’s spoken text, dark, textured soundscapes are counterweighted by statements that carry a darkly humorous edge, making observations on both aspects of club culture as well as more oblique critiques of the modern world.

FR/BLCK/PR

I Don’t Write Rhymes, I Write Code September 27, 2019 BFBK082

FR/BLCK/PR (pronounced "Free Black Press”) is a multimedia art project and audiobook by Regan Farquhar aka Busdriver encompassing poetry, music and collage. “I Don’t Write Rhymes, I Write Code” is at once a scathing indictment of Western power and a sprawling celebration of raw immediacy, memory and the tradition of homespun craft as a practicum within black worlds. Given his life as a language artist within the hip-hop and beat tradition, the poetry and essays that make up the book all act as a licence for metaphor; tacitly bridging the jazz addled literary forms of the Harlem Renaissance to the post-iPhone hyper atomisation of now in service of a desperate identity affirmation. The accompanying 11 track / 64 minute audiobook, straddling the divide between album and mood piece, strives to accompany the physical book’s collagist approach with murky soundscapes, disjointed proto-hiphop and atmospherics provided by Regan Farquhar and his production partner Fumitake Tamura. Busdriver is a rapper/producer, pillar of the Los Angeles underground hip-hop community and veteran of the Project Blowed scene (the legendary freestyle/battle space co-founded by Aceyalone from Freestyle Fellowship and Abstract Rude in 1994). He has released 13 studio albums and mixtapes since 1999 on iconic labels such as Epitaph, Anti-, Mush Records and Big Dada, collaborating with Daedelus, Prefuse 73, Boom Bip, Modeselektor, Open Mike Eagle and Anderson .Paak to name but a few. In 2008 Busdriver featured in “This is the Life” - the award-winning documentary film directed by Ava DuVernay, which chronicles the aforementioned alternative hip hop movement that flourished in 1990s Los Angeles and its legendary hub: the Good Life Cafe.)

Mutagénicos – 3

Dirty Water Records LP SWEET036LP 5056321619259 The Spanish trio escape their garage restraints and unleash their other sonic experiences. Their third album includes Rock'n'Roll - with emphasis on the latter - harmonically propelled Rhythm and Blues ("Idiota"), pianos running amok and swing-loaded saxophones ("He Venido A Buscarte"), and songs that bleed choruses ("Menos Mal"), and poultryinspired guitars à la MFC Chicken ("Autocontrol"). There is even a tropical and circus-like cumbia of death ("Cumbia De La Muerte"). A song that makes them soar up to heights not reached in their previous works. Miguel Pérez "Mitch" on piano and Dani Niño (The Limboos) on baritone saxophone help build a solid frame and armour their sound, emerging from the Studios at Casa Mabe, a rural house located in the mountains of La Rioja with David Garrido behind the desk. Mutagénicos' prose reminds us that we all have asked ourselves more than once: What do they want from me? Starting from that premise, they recite elegant farewells to the charlatans du jour ("Eres El Mejor"), they lay out eloquent pleas for the use of the weekend as shock therapy treatment ("Resetear"), and can move from lowly subjects like Nightclub courtship ("Darlo Todo") to the more elevated levels of theological dissertations with a cynical touch ("ActualiceSu Fe"). They wrap up "3" with a sui generis interpretation of the radio script of "The War of the Worlds": threat from outer space, news bulletins, alien machines and sonic jabber at the mercy of theremin, synthesizer and final delay. 01 Lo Que Digan De Mi 02 Actualice Su Fe. 03 La Cumbia De La Muerte. 04 Autocontrol. 05 Eres El Mejor. 06 Resetear. 07 Darlo Todo. 08 He Venido A Buscarte. 09 Idiota. 10 Menos Mal. 11 Muerte Marte.

Singapore Sling - Killer Classics

Fuzz Club LP

180-gram vinyl. Discordant, claustrophobic and unforgiving, Icelandic psych-rock heavyweights Singapore Sling – the project of Reykjavík-based noisenik Henrik Björnsson – have been conjuring their own scuzzy nihilistic anthems for nearly two decades and have picked-up a cult-like following along the way. Now back with their tenth full-length which pools together the primal gusto of The Stooges with a (un)healthy smattering of Mary Chain fuzz-pedal belligerence and Suicide-esque proto-punk. More than the sum of their influences, though, each song is delivered with the same trademark charm – or perhaps, lack of – that the band have been cultivating since Henrik founded the project back in 2000. Outlining his mission statement for the record, Henrik says: “The last record [‘Kill Kill Kill’] was about music. This one is about songs. The title of the record is ‘Killer Classics’ because that is what I set out to make: Killer Classics. Just simple, catchy rock’n´roll songs. As rock’n’roll songs should be. Of course.” The album borne out of a particularly challenging period in his life, which he wound up channelling into the new material, he goes on to explain: “Before I recorded this new album I had many frustrating months where I didn’t have the time, space or peace of mind to write and record. When I was finally able to do that again I had to let all that frustration out and I did that by making a lot of noise and saying fuck a lot.” 1 All The Way In 2 Sugar And Shite 3 Highway Reject 4 Lynchbilly 5 It's A Hit 6 Switchblade 7 Nothing Matters But Rock N Roll 8 Underground Man 9 Dub Swirl 10 Confusion Then Death

Freezing Cold Glimmer

Label: Salinas Records Format: Vinyl 12” Catalog Number: SAL-099 Release Date: September 27th, 2019 Box Lot: 48 LPs Contact Information: wideawakeprpdx@gmail.com

Salinas Records is proud to announce the release of Glimmer, the debut full-length LP from New York based indie/punk rock band, Freezing Cold. The band came together in early 2017 as friends. Having spent time growing up together in the New York DIY music community in bands like Bridge and Tunnel, Weed Hounds, and Aye Nako had the members Jeff Cunningham (guitar & vocals), Angie Boylan (drums and vocals), and Nick Rice (bass) have all known each other for years. The band’s debut album combines lush sounds with earnest storytelling, creating music that is reminiscent of Lemonheads, Throwing Muses, Sebadoh, Archers of Loaf, Ride, with a dash of punk, rounding out select tracks with keyboards and a few with a string section. Listening through Glimmer and standout tracks “New Ways to Wait”, “Parentheses”, “Teenage Insights”, and “Squint to See” the band defy simplistic genre comparisons. The album was recorded and mixed by engineer, producer, and recording artist J Robbins (Against Me!, Promise Ring, Lemuria, Jawbox) at Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore in March of 2019. Track Listing: 1. New Ways To Wait 2. Hand Wringing Hands 3. Parentheses 4. And The Morning Light 5. Here/Now 6. Teenage Insights 7. Mall Walkers 8. Pill Box 9. Skywriting 10. Squint to See 11. “Gallagher’s work is process-oriented to the point of being like very cool, highly aesthetic science. Even his most conventional-looking paintings (though even those are far from conventional) are experimental in the special sense that they’re generative, formed as the gradual or instantaneous result of a chemical reaction, in illustration of physical laws, or as the aftermath of one large gesture, or sometimes as the exposition of a mathematical concept.” - CAN Journal “One thing I’ve always loved about Terry Riley, and what helps distinguish his music from the other big names of his time (Young, Reich, Glass, etc), is the way it seems to bubble. There’s a continual push and pop of air inside his sound, giving it a watery perpetual motion that appears to be composed of different chemical material than that of any other minimalist. Machine Listener manages to capture a similar bubbling on his new LP Endless Coil, in two side-long pieces that course and throb and generally burst into the air as if that were their God-given calling. Endless Coil does a lot more than that too – it builds patient arcs, creating drama like a well-crafted narrative and developing freely like a jungle plant – but still, I’ll take the bubbling........ static pulses merge with string-like sawing and, eventually, space-warped waves in a way that makes the entire piece sound like it’s helping rotate the earth. That may seem overly grandiose, but Endless Coil certainly feels like its own world once you’ve stepped inside it, and that’s a trip I plan to take quite frequently.” - Marc Masters

Cleveland noise scene by way of his now retired concert series Research and Development and through his continued role as a mastermind of the annual Voice of the Valley Noise Rally festival in West Virginia. Gallagher has collaborated and performed extensively with a range of Hausu Mountain-affiliated artists like Moth Cock and Tiger Village, and he appeared on Optikk, the latest release from HausMo mainstay Khaki Blazer. Colubrid, his first solo release with Hausu Mountain, opens his extra-terrestrial laboratory for office hours and lets us witness the creation of his technoid hardware sketches as they funnel out from his rig of synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers. Gallagher builds his tracks from bursts of non-recursive drum patterns and atonal antimelodies, as organic drones spread through his mycelial networks of sound. Like the drippy, tactile pieces that populate his visual art practice, his music exhibits little evidence of the input of humankind as it splashes through the speakers in dollops of amorphous electronic texture and warped patches of idiosyncratic percussion. While some elements of his work call back to the more form-agnostic exports of projects like Autechre and Mark Fell, Machine Listener’s innate penchant for rhythmic grooves and dub-informed bass voices keeps his music rooted in some semblance of almost danceable beat production. The fact that Gallagher prefers one-take live recordings and chance-based operations speaks to his mastery of his chosen gear and his clear vision in shaping the final product of each of his sessions with little more than preliminary tone programming and hands-on-knobs decision making. Crafted from squelching synth voices and swathes of fibrous, granular glitch, Machine Listener’s tracks pile together into twitching blobs rendered in high-resolution detail, like dribbles of iridescent plastic allowed to congeal together and dry overnight. Just when his sessions seem to teeter on the edge of total abstraction, Gallagher introduces bizarre beat structures into his mixes that bump and slither into legible grids that build alongside the swirling voices that have accumulated up to that point. Machine Listener’s choice of drum tones runs the gamut from tinny presets that evoke a full drum kit as performed on an 80’s FM keyboard to the 3D volleys of re-tuned percussion found in contemporary club-adjacent techno. Colubrid evokes the feeling of looking out through the compound eyes of an insect or the infrared field of vision of a reptile, transmuting familiar shapes into a fractal visual language that pushes at the boundaries of the human perspective and plumbs the unknown depths of auditory fragmentation.

characters includes four families of Mississippi musicians, three generations deep, and a photographer from Texas.”

In 2017, Wyatt McSpadden found an old roll of film and tracked down members of North Mississippi Allstars to share his forgotten photographs. The images were so profound and so beautiful that they would come to inspire the latest recording, Up And Rolling. The images inspired the band to ask, “What did the music sound like that night in 96? What does Mississippi music sound like now? What would ideally be on the push button AM/ FM radio as we drove thru the hills?” The North Mississippi Allstars would return to the famous Zebra Ranch to record Up And Rolling, inspired by Wyatt’s images. They gathered together, trimmed back the wisteria, and swept out the converted barn recording studio. The fired up the tube amps and old computers and began conjuring up modern Mississippi music, ancient and futuristic all at once. Telling it how it was and how they think it should be. Up And Rolling is modern Mississippi. Transcending time and space, the music reaches out into the dark of night like the wisteria vine, looking for free hearted souls to latch onto and wedge into the foundation of hate, slowly tearing down walls a generation at a time.

Winter Sun Chinstrap Chapter Adelie At the Top of the Hill, They Stood... Pythagoras on the Line Again The Life of an Emperor Gentoo Origin Midnight Sun

Praise for Penguin Cafe:

“There is a sense of place representing creativity, where endless space and emptiness – albeit with an underlying sense of beauty and timelessness – is a perfect context for creating something” — Arthur Jeffes On October 4th Erased Tapes present Handfuls of Night — the highly anticipated follow-up to Penguin Cafe’s much applauded 2017 album The Imperfect Sea — inspired by the Antarctic, Arthur Jeffes’ journey following in Scott’s footsteps and our penguin friends that reside there. Using gut-stringed violins, viola, cello, bass, percussion, upright and grand pianos, synthesiser, harmonium and more, Arthur Jeffes and his cohorts have crafted a vivid series of panoramic sonic landscapes, that are as rich in cerebral poignancy as they are in emotional depth. Bookended by the atmospheric ambient piano pieces ‘Winter Sun’ and ‘Midnight Sun’, the album traverses glacial minimalism with ease, combining their signature contemporary classical panoramas, such as the melancholic yet upbeat lead track ‘At the Top of the Hill, They Stood...’ and the colossal cinematic piece ‘Chapter’, with the crystalline folktronica on ‘Pythagorus on the Line Again’ — a re-visiting and continuation of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s 1993 Union Cafe song on the principles of harmonics. Handfuls of Night began life after Greenpeace commissioned Jeffes to write four pieces of music corresponding to four breeds of penguins, to help raise awareness for the endangered Antarctic seas . A fundraising evening at EartH in Hackney followed, where Penguin Cafe premiered the four songs named after their feathered counterparts to a sold out audience; the rousing contemporary folk inflected ‘Chinstrap’, the mournful and minimalistic ‘Adelie’, stoic and rhythmic ‘The Life of an Emperor’ and the wistful, string-laden ‘Gentoo Origin’.

“An endlessly repeatable mood music

“This record started with a core of pieces I wrote specifically about penguins in the Antarctic for a project with Greenpeace in autumn 2018. There are four native Antarctic penguin species – each with their own individual characteristics and natures. I carried on from there to envisage a whole anthropomorphised world, where these penguins had narratives and adventures that we soundtracked”, says Jeffes. But both the album and Penguin Cafe as a project have origins that reach further back:

Official Websites: www.penguincafe.com www.erasedtapes.com

“In 2005 I was asked to join an expedition re-creating Scott’s last Antarctic trip in 1911 for the BBC, using the same Edwardian equipment. I’m no explorer but I was keen, especially as there’s a family link – Scott was married to my great grandmother before she married my great grandfather. Antarctica by this stage being a protected environment, we swapped to the Arctic circle where we spent 3 months on the Greenland ice sheet, first dog-sledding and then man-hauling just short of 1000 km at 10,000 feet, across ice fields and glaciers. I had lots of time to ponder my life back home. It was then that I decided to get my Master of Music degree and focus on composing music, and also then that I realised that even in the most remote silent places, music can still be a huge part of one’s internal world and imagination. Whilst on the expedition. I spent days playing things back in my head and also writing new things, which I would then try and write down at the end of the day.”

Handfuls of Night’s tones, textures and melodies evoke otherworldly expanses, which at different junctures are either foreboding, awe inspiring or peaceful. There’s subtly morphing rhythmic repetition throughout, somewhere between minimalism, krautrock and the piano-cascades of label peer Lubomyr Melnyk. Jeffes creates a kinetic, circling motion, which drives the album forward in the form of a musical trip that mirrors the physical journey it was inspired by.

The music Kacy and Clayton make is inextricable from where they grew up. They sing about the kind of people you’d find in Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan (population very few.) The hills, barns and remoteness of the area are in these songs, with a bittersweet acknowledgement that this music has taken them far from home.

Carrying On follows the international acclaim for their previous records Strange Country (which Q magazine called, “A beautiful album that nudges a classic past into a brave future.”) and 2017’s The Siren’s Song (described by Uncut as “Ageless and beguiling. A classic record for this or any other time.”) Their sound is equal parts homespun, coming from a family and community where playing music is an ever present part of social gatherings, and the rare country, blues and English folk rock these second cousins obsess over and collect. For Carrying On, Clayton cites as influences: Bobbie Gentry’s Delta Sweete, Hoyt Axton’s My Griffin Is Gone, Cajun fiddle music, and the steel guitar of Ralph Mooney who played on many of the records that defined the Bakersfield country music scene of the 1950s. Sixties psych has also woven its way into these new songs. Having toured almost nonstop for the last two years, Carrying On was conceived and honed on the road and recorded immediately after a jaunt across Western Canada – the songs having been tried and tested before audiences each night. The album was produced once again by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo fame, at his Loft studio in Chicago.

City Slang are thrilled to announce the debut album of WIVES! The Queens, NY four-piece is the latest fit into a long lineage of New York’s gritty, melodic-meets-punk. WIVES as a band came together by happenstance — a random realization amidst friends busy with other musical projects. Jay met Adam Sachs, WIVES’ drummer, while interning at a New York recording studio where Adam worked as an assistant. The two became fast friends, their constant hanging out growing to include guitarist Andrew Bailey (DIIV) and bassist Gabe Wax, who’d eventually be replaced by another friend, Alex Crawford. All were embedded in New York’s DIY music scene through their respective projects, with years of playing house shows and booking their own tours under their belts. It wasn’t until a random day of extra studio time booked for another project that the four of them actually played together. So Removed is grungy dark-wave, tethered to daily anxiety without resorting to cynicism. The noisy dissonance of Sonic Youth, the edgy hooks of early Pixies, and the clever, cerebral sneering of The Fall simmer as touchstones within the album, sharp and prodding at the details, pulsing with urgency. So Removed plunges into the void of unknown, a tangle of contemporary dread and optimism, mapping the gray areas of alienation. Angel Bat Dawid The Oracle Composer, clarinetist, singer & spiritual jazz soothsayer Angel Bat Dawid descended on Chicago's jazz & improvised music scene just a few years ago. In very short time, the potency, prowess, spirit & charisma of her cosmic musical proselytizing has taken her from relatively unknown improviser to borderline ubiquitous performer in Chicago's avant-garde. On any given night you can find Angel adding aura to ensembles led by Ben LaMar Gay, or Damon Locks, or Jaimie Branch, or Matthew Lux, or even, on a Summer night in 2018, onstage doing a woodwind duo with Roscoe Mitchell. For her recorded debut on International Anthem, The Oracle, we've chosen to release a batch of tracks that Angel created entirely alone – performing, overdubbing & mixing all instruments & voices by her self – recorded using only her cell phone in various locations, from London UK to Cape Town RSA, but primarily from her residence in the attic of the historic Radcliffe Hunter mansion in Bronzeville, Southside, Chicago. Following a flood of critical & communal acclaim from The Oracle’s January 2019 cassette-only release, the album is finally available on compact disc and vinyl LP inside a deluxe old-style Stoughton tip-on jacket with insert card, IARC obi strip & dome-patterned inner sleeve.

Radio Moscow’s self-titled debut album was released in 2007, when Parker Griggs was 22. It was produced by Dan Auerbach. Legendary rock music writer Greg Prato described it as “a throwback to the classic rock of the ‘70s”, comparing certain songs to artists such as Ram Jam, The Allman Brothers Band and The Jeff Beck Group. He admired Griggs’ voice describing it as “powerful, but stylish”. This is a limited pressing of 200 on color vinyl.

Julie's Haircut - In The Silence Electric

Their latest record is notable for its deft balance between hypnotic radiance and extrasensory intensity, between beatific calm and palpable anger. Yet it’s also a record which has arrived through a strange process of osmosis from a band confident enough to let subconscious and metaphysical aspects steer them in the appropriate directions. A supremely confident and cohesive collection that sees the deep-end diabolism and mantric intensity of the Italian band’s Rocket debut, 2017’s ‘Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin’ expanded into a righteous fury and incandescent splendour. Whether it’s the heavy-lidded rapture of ‘Lord Help Me Find The Way’, the menacing dream-state of ‘In Return’ or the Suicide-damaged psychic assault that is ‘Sorcerer’, all is subsumed by a bold singularity of intent, amidst a colorful firestorm of electronic monomania, jazz-tinged atonality and indelibly memorable vocal hooks. “There’s a theme springing from the title of the record and the (cover) photos of Annegret Soltau that deliver some sense of helplessness, suffocation, difficulty in communication” notes the band’s Luca Giovanardi. Yet for all this - and paradoxically enough - ‘In The Silence Electric’ is both this mysterious and rebellious band’s most adventurous and most direct record to date - not to mention an ever more compelling transmission from renowned experts in altered states.. 01 Anticipation Of The Night (5:24) 02 Emerald Kiss (6:56) 03 Until The Lights Go Out (4:18) 04 Lord Help Me Find The Way (4:40) 05 Sorcerer (4:17) 06 Darlings Of The Sun (4:02) 07 In Return (3:50) 08 Pharaoh’s Dream (3:40) 09 For The Seven Lakes (4:51)

AFRIQUA ‘COLORED’ Berlin-based producer Adam Longman Parker announces Colored, his first full-length LP as Afriqua for R&S Records. The album is a celebration of the unifying power of Black culture through the prism of electronic music. After releasing successful singles “Soul Correction,” and “Chronic Cool,” and the back-to-back Aleph and Vice/Principle EPs, a full-length album was the ideal format for Parker to expand on the sounds typified in his dancefloor productions. His heightened attention to production quality was inspired by seminal records in the canon of Black music, including work by Quincy Jones, Roy Ayers, and Weldon Irvine (who also hailed from Hampton, Parker’s hometown in Virginia). Colored, h owever, is a distinctly “un-nostalgic” album and these classics served more as archetypes of musical achievement than bases for imitation. Growing up in Virginia, Parker was exposed to a niche of local electronic music pioneers including The Neptunes, Timbaland, and Missy Elliot. “The Virginia sound,” Parker says, is far more intrinsic to his process than the oft-replicated models of American house and techno: “Black electronic music doesn’t have to be from the Midwest—this isn’t from Detroit, this isn’t from Chicago. It’s from Virginia.” From the ritual chants on “Shout,” to Motown’s African roots on “Upstream,” and the George Clinton-era psyfunk of “Space Dookie,” Colored ’s diverse musical influences read like a lesson in Black music history. This panoramic approach extends to the album’s collaborators as well—lyrical wizard and J.Cole collaborator Salomon Faye, Belgian Afro-pop vocalist Zap Mama, LCD Soundsystem bassist Tyler Pope, and Parker’s brother, producer and songwriter Ruven. Parker spent two years composing and assembling Colored, which thematically bridges the past and present milestones of Black music from their Southern roots to their most modern incarnations. “The overarching theme,” he says, “was reconciling this branch of the Black musical tree with its origins. It's not divisive, it's about celebrating the rightful origins of the music we all enjoy.” - DEBUT ALBUM FROM AFRIQUA - FEATURING ZAP MAMA AND SALAMON FAYE - US DJ TOUR IN OCTOBER & NOVEMBER 2019 - PINK VINTL DOUBLE LP WITYH PRINTED INNERS - FOR FANS OF CARL CRAIG, MOODYMANN, RICARDO VILLALOBOS
