Digging beneath the mess of the world to find the beauty underneath is perhaps the most consistent theme in Chelsea Wolfe’s expansive discography―a theme that ties together her ceaseless explorations in unorthodox textures, haunting melodies, and mining the grandeur embedded within ugliness and pain. With her sixth official album Hiss Spun, Wolfe becomes empowered by embracing the mess of the self, to control the tumult of the soul in hopes of reigning in the chaos of the world around us. “I wanted to write some sort of escapist music; songs that were just about being in your body, and getting free,” Wolfe says of the album before extrapolating on the broader scope of her new collection of songs. “You’re just bombarded with constant bad news, people getting fucked over and killed for shitty reasons or for no reason at all, and it seems like the world has been in tears for months, and then you remember it’s been fucked for a long time, it’s been fucked since the beginning. It’s overwhelming and I have to write about it.”

While past albums operated on the intimacy of stripped-down folk music (The Grime and the Glow, Unknown Rooms), or the throbbing pulse of supplemental electronics (Pain Is Beauty, Abyss), Wolfe’s latest offering wrings its exquisiteness out of a palette of groaning bass, pounding drums, and crunching distortion. The flesh-and-bone of the material on Hiss Spun was culled from upheavals in Wolfe’s personal life, and coming to terms with years of vulnerability, anger, self-destruction, and dark family history. Aside from adding low-end he with gratuitous slabs of fuzz bass, longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm contributed harrowing swaths of sound collages from sources surrounding the artist and her band in recent years―the rumble of street construction at a tour stop in Prague, the howl of a coyote outside Wolfe’s rural house in California, the scrape of machinery on the floor of a warehouse at a down-and-out friend’s workplace. Music is rendered out of dissonance―bomb blasts from the Enola Gay, the shriek of primates, the fluttering pages of a Walt Whitman book are manipulated and seamlessly integrated into the feral and forlorn songs of Hiss Spun. “The album is cyclical, like me and my moods,” Wolfe says of Hiss Spun. “Cycles, obsession, spinning, centrifugal force―all with gut feelings as the center of the self.” And it’s an album that Wolfe sees as a kind of exorcism. “I’m at odds with myself… I got tired of trying to disappear. The record became very personal in that way. I wanted to open up more, but also create my own reality.” Every Chelsea Wolfe album is cathartic, but never before has both the artist and her audience so desperately needed this kind of emotional purging. Hiss Spun was recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge), and features prominent guitar contributions by Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure) throughout the album, and a guest spot from Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, SUMAC, ISIS) on the song “Vex.” ”

Worldwide Release Date: September 22, 2017 Inspired by the original LP release on Goldband Records in 1979, and an expanded CD reissue in 1991, Swampland Jewels is set for release on September 22. A cult classic with an iconic cover, the 19-track compilation of classic Cajun, zydeco, rock ‘n’ roll and R&B music from East Texas and Southwest Louisiana is the first full-length release from Yep Roc Records partnership with the Southern Folklife Collection. Produced by Steven Weiss, Curator at the Southern Folklife Collection, and remastered by Brent Lambert at The Kitchen Mastering in Carrboro, NC, the compilation features 12 tracks from the original LP and CD releases, seven newly discovered tracks, and includes liner notes by Weiss on the history of Goldband Records and founder Eddie Shuler. After comparing the two-track album master of the original ‘70s release to the album master, Weiss decided to rebuild the compilation from the high-resolution transfers of the un-overdubbed original session tapes. The release retains as much of the raw element as possible while keeping the dynamic range of recordings, which were recorded live, straight-to-tape, without overdubs.

KAUAN have always created moments of quiet introspection, even amidst the thundering riffs and caustic screams that largely defined the contours of the band’s earliest output. But on Kaiho, as KAUAN step out of their past, songwriter and founding member Anton Belov expands upon the reverb-rich, post-rock debuted in 2009’s Aava Tuulen Maa to create serene, nostalgic soundscapes that transport the listener to idyllic days long past spent at the foot of the Ural Mountains outside his native Chelyabinsk.

Kaiho is KAUAN’s seventh album following 2015’s lauded Sorni Nai, which chronicled the infamous and unsolved Dyatlov Pass Incident in which nine hikers mysteriously died after becoming trapped in a blizzard in the Urals. Kaiho focuses on childhood and the transition to adulthood, when the death of a loved one shatters halcyon beginnings and makes clear the stark reckoning that awaits in the end. Lyrics for Kaiho were written by the great Finnish folk singer Marja Mattlar, and as always with KAUAN, they are sung in Finnish, a language that in its eliding vowels creates soothing ethereal tones understood by few but deeply felt by all. With Kaiho, KAUAN lifts off into awe-inspiring plateaus where dulcet alien notes weave amidst the faded light of long gone autumn afternoons, the still of mid-winter, the glittering drops of snowmelt. These moments are remembered tenderly and fondly, echoing from the past and pieced together from afar in the bustling city center of Kiev that KAUAN has called home since 2011. Art for Kaiho, a series of landscape and abstract watercolors painted by Belov’s grandmother, depicts memories pulled from his childhood in Troitsk, but visualized through her own interpretation. Art direction for the album was provided by FELD in Berlin, Germany (Erased Tapes, Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds).

Version Dread RELEASE DATE: 9/22/17 On the flip sides of most Jamaican singles were found dub versions of the vocal tracks, or what were commonly referred to as “versions”. In the early days the “versions” were mainly the instrumental track, with or without vocals. These were the days when songs were not recorded on multi-track machines. As the technology advanced more complex mixes of the vocal side became the norm, with echo, flanging and dropouts on the instruments and vocals. The Studio One sound was always based on the rhythms track, and the labels dubs and versions always remained true to the hard-core rhythms the label released. This collection features eighteen B-sides of top Studio One singles made for commercial release from artists including the Wailing Souls, Willie Williams, the Abyssinians and a host of other legendary groups. Also included are two extended mixes, one of Ernest Ranglin’s “Surfing”, and “Never Give Version” by Carlton and the Shoes.

After a whirlwind initial phase of writing, recording, and touring at a frenetic clip, their newest document marks a period of relative patience; a refocusing and a push toward a new democratization of both process and musical surface. In late winter of 2016, the band expanded their core membership of Evan Burrows, Cory Hanson, and Lee Landey to include two new members — Robbie Cody on guitar and Sofia Arreguin on keys and vocals. From the outset, the new ensemble moved naturally toward a changed working method, as they learned how to listen to each other
and trust in this new format. The songwriting process was consciously relocated to the practice space, where for several months, the band spent hours a day freely improvising, while recording as much of the activity as they could manage. Previously, Wand songs had generally been brought to the group setting substantially formed by singer and guitarist Cory Hanson; now seedling songs were harvested from a growing cloudbank of archived material, then fleshed out and negotiated collectively as the band shifted rhythmically between the permissive space of jamming and the obsessive space of critique. This new process demanded more honest communication, more vulnerability, better boundaries, more mercy and persistence during a year that meanwhile delivered a heaping serving of romantic, familial and political heartbreak for everyone involved. They learned more about their instruments and their perceived limitations. Much else fell apart in their personal lives, in their bodies, and the bodies of those near to them. In this way, Plum lengthened like a shadow underneath a dusking Orange; or rather “Weird Orange,” an affectionate name given to the color of a roulette-chosen, tour-rushed batch of Golem vinyl... an idiom, an inside joke, a talisman, a bookmark, a mood ring. And meanwhile all the shifting weather, the wireless signals, the helicopters overhead. Weird orange softened, darkened delicately, and rouged itself to a Plum. The music of Plum focuses teeming, dense, at times wildly multichromatic sounds into Wand’s most deliberate statement to date, with a long evening’s shadow of loss

Laraaji is a musician, mystic and laughter meditation practitioner based in New York City. He began playing music on the streets in the 1970s, Improvising experimental jams on a modified autoharp processed through various electronic effects. Brian Eno saw him playing one night in Washington Square Park and invited him to record an album for his seminal Ambient series (Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance, released 1980). Laraaji went on to release a prolific series of albums for a wide variety of labels, many of which he recorded himself at home and sold as cassettes during his street performances. In recent years he has had his career celebrated extensively, with two All Saints retrospectives Celestial Music 1970–2011 and Two Sides of Laraaji – as well as reissues on Glitterbeat and Leaving Records/Stones Throw. He has also collaborated with a new generation of underground musicians such as Sun Araw - their recent LP Professional Sunflow (Superior Viaduct) being the fruit of the live shows they played together in 2014.

Michael Andrews created the score using an orchestra of obscure vintage synthesizers and drum machines to this Canne and Sundance Winning film. With songs by Cody Chesnutt, Spirtualized, and Virginia Astley. Andrews fell into film score composition by chance when the band he was playing with—cult soul/jazz collective The Greyboy Allstars— was asked to score Jake Kasdan’s first feature, The Zero Effect. One year later, Andrews got hired to write the music for the highly regarded, though short-lived TV show, Freaks and Geeks (NBC), and soon after, he landed the score for indie film hit, Donnie Darko. Andrews considers himself primarily a guitar player, but Darko’s director, Richard Kelly, told him he didn’t want any guitar in the movie. So, he taught himself to play piano by ear. It’s part of the reason that the score is, as Andrews describes, so simple. “In a way,” he says, “your faults become your trademark.” Darko’s original score album went on to sell over 250,000 copies (in part because of Andrews’ remake of Tears for Fears’ Mad World, featuring Gary Jules), and Andrews became a composer to watch. Andrews and July share similar outsider backgrounds. Andrews does not have any formal music composition training, and July, though she had made a few short films prior to Me and You, had been known primarily for her writing and performance art. July knew that she wanted the music to not to sound “like movie music,” and to sound as if someone who didn’t quite know how to play music had played it. As if the music was somehow a mistake that worked. It’s a theme that provides a thread throughout the film: people come together accidentally but they must make a conscious decision to act after fate has done its part.

To hit play on D33J's long-awaited debut album is to tumble headlong into a rich sonic universe of captivating improbabilities. Where narcotic house music slow-pulses alongside deconstructed future R&B and lush ambient dreamscapes. Where an astoundingly 3-D depth of field somehow radiates with incredible intimacy. Where digital means of production are often usurped by guitar play, analog synth, field recording, or tape edit. Where experimentalism and accessibility aren't the least bit mutually exclusive. Perhaps that's why the taste-making Los Angeles producer and DJ named the project after a thing that doesn't, shouldn't, and couldn't exist: Death Valley Oasis. We'd expect nothing less from D33J, who picks up plaudits whether he's rocking a sweaty Boiler Room show with his Wedidit crewmates, producing blissed out rap tracks for Lil Yachty's albums and mixtapes, or composing solo songs that instantly immerse us in an ever-shifting grid of odd rhythms and melodies. It's all par for the course for someone who grew up in the hyper-cultural melting pot of L.A., plus attended the city's esteemed (yet public) Hamilton High magnet school, where he not only met future tourmate and Death Valley Oasis collaborator Baths, but played in bands with the surf-punkers who'd found FIDLAR, and loaned his sweater to Odd Future's Syd in biology that one time. His path to now has never not been strange and fascinating, with stops in San Francisco for a degree in audio-visual design, and Hamburg for a two-month residency crafting tech-powered interactive art installations, all while developing his inimitable sound. Two EPs — 2011's Tide Songs, in time eventually remastered by Brainfeeder steady Mathewdavid, and 2013's Gravel — plus a run of unpredictable mostly unauthorized R3MIX3S (Drake, Taylor Swift, Brandy, Sigur Rós) heralded the arrival, four years later, of this fully realized work. Death Valley Oasis contains no filler but there are standout moments: like Anticon label mate and Dirty Projectors alum Angel Deradoorian channelling her inner Destiny's Child on the jittery "Spark", or D33J taking a rare turn on the mic to wax druggily romantic on "Plateau," or the eerie Burial-like gloom-bomb that is "Dead Sea," or "Rot," a teamup with Wedidit star Shlohmo (who also provides this album's artwork) and DJ Khaled-approved singer Corbin (f.k.a. Spooky Black) that opens on acoustic strum and reinvents the quiet storm genre before closing with what sounds like death metal pounded out on an MPC. Death Valley Oasis isn't just another entry in D33J's book of "Emotional Dance Music," as he once coined, it's the definitive tome and a paragon of what can be accomplished when a blatant disregard for musical boundaries is matched with ace technical ability and endless tangible heart. At only 25, the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer - born in New Zealand to a Kiwi mother and father from the Cook Islands - is a rare talent whose distinct take on soul captures a sonic and emotional awareness many artists spend their entire careers chasing. He writes with a maturity and flair that belies his years and new album “Wallflower” sees Jordan edging beyond the peripheries of the genial, often sunflecked sound his fans have come to know him for. On “Wallflower” the focus is on live instrumentation - but the groove and the cadence are unmistakable, framing soul and jazz in a truly vibrant oeuvre that simultaneously recalls his predecessors The Roots and peers The Internet, Nick Hakim and Hiatus Kaiyote. By the 1970s Studio One and Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in Reggae for almost two decades. From running the Downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of Kingston in the late 1950s to opening Studio One at 13 Brentford Road at the start of the 1960s, ushering in Ska and Rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of Jamaica’s artists – everyone from Bob Marley and The Wailers, Ken Boothe, Toots and The Maytals, The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo and more – Clement Dodd had until this point dominated the Jamaican musical world.

And yet, incredibly, Clement Dodd was barely half way through his musical path, maintaining Studio One’s number one position in the Jamaican music scene throughout the 1970s with a combination of musical and creative innovation and an endless capacity to adapt and create new musical fashions. By the end of the 1970s Dancehall had become the defining sound on the island. Dancehall was essentially a tribute by other Jamaican producers and artists to the classic music of Studio One created in the 1960s as young artists across the island created new songs, while musicians recreated these original classic foundation Studio One rhythms. As on other occasions, Clement Dodd rose to this new musical challenge by producing a whole new era of classics for Studio One.

The roots of Dancehall begin with the DJs of the early 1970s, who were the first to sing new material over earlier classic rhythms. Early DJ pioneers such as Dillinger and Prince Jazzbo both feature here toasting over classic songs - The Mad Lad’s Ten to One and The Eternals’ Queen of the Minstrel. But it is the new wave of artists who arrived at Studio One at the onset of Dancehall which enabled Studio One to maintain its number one status as the whole of Kingston’s rival music producers – Channel One, Joe Gibbs and many others – attempted to challenge this position.

The Sea and Cake are a band who need very little introduction. In their extensive 25 year career the band has bridged the gap between Brazilian music of the late 1960’s, African influenced guitar lines, and independent pop. A sound that is entirely distinct, centered around the delicate guitar interplay of Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt, driven by the versatile rhythms of bassist Eric Claridge and drummer John McEntire, and finally set apart by Prekop’s vocals and obtuse lyrics. The Sea and Cake’s third album The Biz is back on vinyl. Pressed on color vinyl for the first time (gold!) and packaged with an artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon. Following the band’s self-titled debut released in Sept 1994 and Nassau released in March 1995, The Biz was the band’s third record in just over one calender year. It was recorded at John McEntire’s own Soma Studios. The instruments were mostly recorded live in only three days. The vocals were recorded by Prekop alone in five days. On Nassau the band experimented heavily with signal processing and on The Biz they continue that experimentation using less common forms of processing, more sparingly. They used a Roland Space Echo, EML-101, and ARP 2600 as both instruments as well as manipulators. Recording withstanding, The Biz continues to showcase the bands ability to mesh together their unusual blend of pop, soul and jazz into one seamless output.

Some nice colors and shapes in there, and for anyone who worked one of them at a primary level, it’s a useful blueprint to recall. But when you’re trying to carve out the beams of something for NOW, you’re better off with new combinations. Call Dead Rider. The beat is lode-bearing, brick-house solid (courtesy of batterie-man Matt Espy), but flexible, breathing. In through the cracks come stuttered words and whispers, the pealing of a steel drum, a squalling sax or two, barks from the outside. Crew foreman Todd Rittmann twines them with a cabling of acid-base guitar licks, cutting down into the roots for fingerings to invert and extend. The basslines roll and crush, bounce and squish as required (thank you, White
Christmas!), bringing synth and synthesis into and away from the framework. Wafting through the room is the float and gloss of eternal rhythm and blues, whether it’s the swelling of soulful choirs, organ chords or the deft tailing of guitar lines designed to relax us in the shades of a dusty, aphrodisiac evening. All done up with wack that Thundercat would get on the one, that would drive D’Angelo or Kendrick back to the notebooks for all the right words. Crew Licks is audio-verite pop music; not created but lived, with parts of life on the run reused to facilitate other parts. A chimera, reflecting man in pieces; not whole or fully animate. But beautiful...and useful too. Just remember, kids — whether you take five or take a powder, artistic achievement and fun aren’t mutually exclusive. And even if you didn’t invent the wheel — good for you for putting on the spinner rims.

“Mnestic Pressure” is Lee Gamble’s first album since 2014 and his first with Hyperdub, a reset that sees a noticeable change in his sound and the concepts that feed into his music. Lee says ‘From “Diversions 1994-1996” (2012) through to “Koch” (2014) - my music felt like I was dealing with signals from elsewhere signals from the unconscious, sub-aqua, hallucinated, dreamt. “Mnestic Pressure” feels like their decoded offspring, a terra interpretation.’ The title “Mnestic Pressure” comes from Lee’s thinking about how our contemporary memory is pressured, individually, but also collectively. ‘We live in these strobing, visual times, like a constant subliminal advertisement but, also over the last few years the world seems to have become more and more dreamlike, alien, and parodic itself and there was this part of me that wanted to drag my music back from this Shangri-La, but fully drenched and infected by its ghosts.’ “Mnestic Pressure” as a whole is a simulation of this experience; a flow of targeted information, through contrasting and quickly changing terrain, from one track to another you’re dragged into a new space. The pressure to move is intrinsic to the flow of the album, one thing morphologically transforms into another, zooming in and out from wide angle to detail, reshaping into new forms at a speed Lee’s music hasn’t before. The music on “Mnestic Pressure” has a hardness, with a structure and melody that was sublimated in Lee’s previous LPs. It builds on his more recent experiments with more functional dancefloor forms. Here his hypermodern production and crunchy, dissembled beats feel like they could be malfunctioning holograms projected onto the hallucinated memories of his early work.

Although Detroit is usually associated with Jackie Wilson and Andre Williams’s R&B and sensational 60’s soul phenomenon Motown, the Motor City had a solid crew of straight-up bluesmen, and this set features some fine examples of the city’s post-war era practitioners. Ambitious, grand and by any measure, beautiful; it’s tempting to simply and sincerely soak in the atmosphere of “Titan’s Island,” the second full-length album from Ancient Ocean, the long running ambient project of NYC-via-Kentucky resident J.R. Bohannon. The album unearths the intense process mending the worlds of modern classical, expansive sound art, minimalism, and the usual micro-guitar and synth exploration we’ve come to expect from Bohannon. At the very heart of “Titan’s Island” is the album’s concept. Saturn’s moon of Titan has long been considered to be our solar system’s only habitable planet aside from the earth – largely because of its surface lakes and seas, as revealed by the exploratory spacecraft Cassini, as a part of perhaps the most ambitious planetary space exploration in human history. These notions of discovery and exploration immediately find life of their own under Bohannon’s direction, who notes that part of the album was directly influenced by his thinking about how sounds may take shape in space. Space, you’ll recall, is a vacuum. Given such, are the sounds – the literal wavelengths and electromagnetic waves – actually there. And if so, what do they sound like? Such is the depth of exploration engineered by Bohannon on “Titan’s Island.”

The stirring sounds that make up “Titan’s Island” fit no easy description. While the echoes of fellow pioneers in contemplative sound – be they Robbie Basho, Laurie Spiegal, Laraaji, or thousands of others from around the world and back again – may serve as a strong undercurrent to Ancient Ocean, responsibility for the meticulous manner in which they’re assembled for maximum emotional resonance rests with Bohannon exclusively. What is undeniably and immediately present is the core, contemplative quality of “Titan’s Island,” decipherable from the opening seconds of the interlocking, sustained synth tones of the title track that begins the album. The cosmic crash of expectations is brilliantly blown apart only moments later, as the entrance of a genuinely haunting pedal steel guitar line initially implies to the listener that the album is bound to nothing less than an absolutely skyrocketing ambition — an ambition that’s only confirmed, over and over again, on the album’s remaining thirty-nine minutes. The four songs that make up the album may be better understood as movements, although no matter the definition, their impact is more than the sum of the distinctions. The compositional range of the album is appropriately massive, and occasionally overwhelming (and this is meant purely as a compliment), in a way that’s not just representative of previous Ancient Ocean releases, but emblematic of Bohannon’s emerging, evolving excellence. OVERVIEW: Mashrou' Leila are a five-strong indie band based in Beirut. Their rousing, sensual electro- pop anthems about political freedoms, LGBT rights, race, religion and modern Arabic identity have challenged the status quo of the Middle-Eastern pop industry. Ibn el Leil, which means “son of the night", is Mashrou’ Leila’s most ambitious album to date, exploring the complexities of taking refuge in the danger, comfort, lust, and promise of the night. The loose collective of students who began jamming together in 2008 at the American University of Beirut has gradually focused into a an ambitious, fiercely articulate quintet: vocalist/lyricist Hamed Sinno, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Firas Abou Fakher, violinist Haig Papazian, drummer Carl Gerges, and bassist Ibrahim Badr. And the music they make has focused, too, into a charged, atmospheric version of pop that is geographically impossible to place. The lyrics draw on their collective experiences, which the band shares with the youth of the Middle East, and the album addresses the need for self-expression and a judgment free culture— a notion often stifled in a conservative society. Through their relevant and charged lyrics, their music has resonated with fans all over the globe, gaining international recognition for the band. CNN has described Mashrou’ Leila as “The voice of their generation” while the Financial Times have called them “The Arab world’s most influential independent band”. The album takes place in a hypothetical night, zooming in on specific experiences, from the ritual of preparation (a prayer to the muse of song), to 2015’s horrifying shootings in Lebanon, to the aching loneliness that can be felt even on the crowded dance floor. Ibn El Leil, as with all of Mashrou’ Leila’s albums, was self-produced and was recorded over the course of three weeks in a studio in suburban Paris. Ibn El Leil brilliantly reimagines the vibrant sound of contemporary Beirut with guitars, drum machines, samples, razor-sharp violin and magnetic frontman Hamed Sinno’s mercurial voice. The sonic world of the album considers each instrument that is performed by the five-member band — far removed from the digital sounds of radio-pop — and experiments with silky synths, orchestral beats, and live drums and brass. Self-released and never before available on CD outside of their live shows and a handful of stores in the Middle East, Mashrou’ have prepared a new deluxe version of Ibn el Leil for worldwide release. Holiday Ghosts are based in Falmouth on the south coast of England and originally started out as the solo project of Sam Stacpoole of The Black Tambourines, with the rest of the line-up evolving since 2012. While this record is a commencement of many sorts, it is in no way a mere beginning. Ka’s ritual is well underway here, her craft clearly already a dedicated mastery; it finds her on the hunt for new discoveries with a humble desire for the transfigured, the sublime. This has been among the goals since early times, when Ka was one of the founding members of experimental psychlings Spires That In the Sunset Rise. Formed in 2001 out of the Chicago scene, and described by late guitar legend Jack Rose as a “female Sun City Girls,” Spires’ sisterhood of sound deepened the New Folk slant with an array of avant- and world-flavored directions drawing them ever-farther into the source. Ka relocated to NYC in late 2014 and immediately embarked upon new directions — exploring piano improvisations, electroacoustic intervention, extended vocal technique, physical movement, and the electronic processing of her flute playing. The singular force that is Ka is represented on two

releases under the Sapropelic Pycnic name — the improvised piano album See Sun Think Shadow (released in November 2015 on Brooklyn’s Perfect Wave imprint) and the Coltrane tribute A Love Supreme (on Chicago’s No Index label in January 2016). With the release of Sapropelic Pycnic, Ka manifests an evolving selfhood, expanding upon the essence of her first two albums’ artist name, while replacing and thus becoming that name on her own. “Sapropel” is a contraction of the ancient Greek words sapros and pelos — putrification and mud. “Pycnic” draws from pyknos — dense; stocky. This wordplay is meant to suggest a physical consumption, ingesting of the nutrient-rich mud found at the bottom of seas, lakes and rivers. Very much akin to the gorging of this metaphorical sludge, on Sapropelic Pycnic, Ka Baird imbibes sounds to provoke unseen forces within the wilds of her own unconscious, then brings them into the play. Emphasizing breath, via voice and flute, Sapropelic Pycnic is a possession, a physical catharsis, a transformation, comprised of burry, guttural rhythms,
loops and clusters of flute figures with gliding vocal and synth melodies. Reaching toward the ancient roots of music, Ka utilizes electronic manipulation to take the ear past preconception, combining the linearity of the physical with the abstraction of the cerebral, crafting textural rhythmic noise alongside lush operatic passages, containing multitudes. Conceived live as a series of solo vignettes and played that way by Ka (featuring contributions from Max Eilbacher (electronics), Sandy Gordon (vibraphone) and Troy Schaefer (violin)), Sapropelic Pycnic draws from primordial ooze and raises high a sacrifice to the immemorial concept of the sacred, citing Chris Hedges in The Power of Imagination: “A society that loses its respect for the sacred, that ignores its oracles and severs itself from the power of human imagination, ensures its obliteration.” We are standing on the verge of a great chasm. Sapropelic Pycnic uses tools both ancient and modern to draw Ka Baird — and all who listen — upward, toward the eternal.

By October, 1979, my partner, Aaron Weiner and I had produced a handful of Boffomundo Shows at Los Angeles’ first public access television studio at Theta Cable in Santa Monica. It was our good fortune to meet and partner with Tony Harrington of All Ears Records and we joined forces as The All Ears Boffomundo Show. Up to that point we interviewed King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, PFM singer Bernardo Lanzetti, and Brand X & Phil Collins (before his solo fame). All Ears Records stable of artists concentrated heavily on Japanese bands and musicians. He introduced us to the already legendary synthesizer master, Fumio Miyashita, founder of The Far East Family Band, who Tony boldly dubbed “Japan’s Answer to Pink Floyd.” While certainly influenced by the Floyd, Fumio, along with fellow band member and award winning synthesist, Kitaro, were more accurately evolving the electronic techo-stylings of Germany’s Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Temple, Kraftwerk, and other Krautrock innovators from the early 1970s. One-time Dream and Temple member, and a seminal synth innovator in his own right, Klaus Schulze, both produced and mixed several Far East Family Band albums. As Aaron recalls, “Fumio was a gentle soul. Soft spoken, thoughtful and intelligent. And on the cutting edge of technology. It was in Fumio’s hands that I first viewed a Sony Walkman. It is mind boggling to think what has transpired technologically since then.” Fumio brought multiple keyboards, percussion and incidental sundries to a studio the size of a small garage. Somehow, the staff of Theta Cable Studios managed to capture all the sound pumped through a 12" bookshelf speaker! A single microphone rested on a wooden stool in front of that speaker. In 1980, a second appearance from Fumio included Far East Family Band members, guitarist Lance Hooks and bass player George Babon. The same lone bookshelf speaker was employed once again! In short, Brad Laner is an American musician and record producer best known for his work with the shoegaze band Medicine, which he founded and leads. Additionally, Laner is an active solo artist, recording under the moniker Electric Company as well as releasing four albums under his own name. Micro-Awakenings (released by Drawing Room) is his most recent. Artists such as Brian Eno and Caribou sample his work. His numerous and varied collaborations include projects with Lindsay Buckingham, M83, John Wiese, and members of Failure and Tool. With all that said, mastering both musical worlds of leftfield experimentation and the popular is no small feat. It’s even more of a challenge to bridge these two arts together, especially when the end result is most pleasing to the ears. However, these are exactly the kind of accomplishments that Brad Laner brings forth with almost every release he’s been a part of. His structures allow the listener to move through the realms of song craft with a harmonious sense of enlightenment. His sounds pleasure the cerebral realms that euphorically resonate the whole self. (And yes, it’s completely true too!) A perfect example of this scenario comes in the form of Brad Laner’s early aughts collaboration with Shannon Lee, simply called Medicine (that creative umbrella for which Laner will forever be its leader). Though the background story to this collaboration is most inspiring, the resulting harvests are those that find Laner (with Lee’s highly trained voice) at a creative apex. Initially considered an anomaly in a newly post-Strokes world upon release by the duo in 2003, The Mechanical Forces of Love is unforgettable. With heavy rock presence, it is a mostly electronic affair with a clear influence from the new dance culture, an idea at the time still considered nearly taboo by the establishment. Upon first release, most critics responded to the album with either bemused acceptance, outright hostility, or surprisingly, in the case of the Pitchfork, an 8.0 review. With hindsight now available, it is definitely time to start re-experiencing all the goodness Laner and Lee brought forth way back when, and this reintroduction begins now with a new compilation entitled 2.0 Extraneous. Now, 2.0 Extraneous is not exactly The Mechanical Forces of Love. Instead, it’s a parallel universe version of said record. Some may even argue that it’s the better universe version. Gathering mostly non-LP songs initially used on UK singles, including a Devo cover, an acoustic track, a remix, and a few unreleased treasures, 2.0 Extraneous provides the listener with a re-make/re-model reconstruction of the highly fruitful collaboration between Laner and Lee. In this present, these tracks sound more relevant and contemporary than ever. It’s a breath of fresh air, and you can really dance to it (mostly).

Following their 2013 debut on our Bangers & Ash 12” series (BASH003) and solo releases in 2016 - Cooper’s reflective, harrowing The Sentence (SUS011) and DiMotsis’ blistering, soulful beat tape, Mine Eyes Dazzle (SUS017) - the duo double down on soul and funk traditions to share new ways of communicating soul across eight rippers to the dome. Make It Sweat follows the sunny and smoked rhythm and blues mode of BASH003 with a greater glow (mix care of Rachel Alina, Styles’ ace in the hole, get to know) and peerless compositional prowess. EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN TRACK LISTING: Upper Wilds is the new band of Brooklyn-based musician Dan Friel (Parts & Labor). Friel’s calling cards are his heavily distorted textures and addictive melodies. These high intensity pop songs are reminiscent of label mates Lightning Bolt, with whom Friel toured in 2015. However, where Lightning Bolt’s vocals are heavily distorted, Friel’s tend toward the soaring style of pop/ punk vocalists. Guitar Module 2017 was recorded with Friel playing all the guitar and keys and for the first time since Parts & Labor, singing. Captured by the engineering team at Machines With Magnets (Battles, The Body), Guitar is an overdriven soundtrack for powering through dark days, and a sweaty summer anthem that should be played LOUDLY. Recorded by Seth Manchester, Guitar Module 2017 was performed by Friel himself using an open tuned Hagstrom guitar, an Akai MPC500 sequencer, his trusty Yamaha Portasound keyboard, and an array of pedals. The album’s distorted keys and drum programming are driven by its visceral guitar lines; together, the instruments are the molten bedrock for Friel’s soaring vocals. The resulting songs are anthems for catharsis and escape. References to space appear throughout, from found sound samples of satellites falling from orbit on “Reentry Breakup Recorder” to their breakup into the sea at the end of the track. The darkness of “UFO” describing the oceanic pole of inaccessibility (the farthest point from land, site of the international spacecraft cemetery where discarded satellites and space stations get dropped into the ocean) is contrasted by “Black Holes,” a wry flip of the “we are all made of stars” Moby/Carl Sagan thing. In it, Friel urges us to resist seeing the worst in everything. “Let’s Build A Moon” riffs a Swell Maps song title and turns dark urban realities, let’s plan an escape route, into good fun. Upper Wilds cleverly turns expectation on its head, finding humor in apocalyptic scenarios or in the bubble dweller delusions (“Chainsaw”). Clever reference points, distortion and tension, and an utter allegiance to the pop song create a singular world covered in craggy space debris and ultraviolet melodies.

If “mission creep” refers to a long-haul fatigue cited with increasingly regularity in the present political moment, David Grubbs imagines “creep mission” to be a talismanic utterance in the effort to turn this ship around. Creep Mission is an album of instrumental compositions with Grubbs’s effortlessly recombinant electric guitar at its core, and its m.o. is to go both deep and wide. The album goes deep in the sense that the guitar becomes the relentless, meditative focus of these songs without words, and it goes wide in that these pieces utilize a discontinuous set of arrangements that make the most out of an extraordinary group of musicians convened for the mission at hand. Drummer and most simpatico sparring partner Eli Keszler picks up where his brilliant contributions to Grubbs’s 2016 Prismrose left off; trumpeter Nate Wooley defies you to identify his range of sounds as coming from a single player; and Jan St. Werner (Mouse on Mars, Lithops) can hardly contain his joy in transforming the proceedings into electro-prismatic splinters. For his part, Grubbs’s guitar playing has never before so confidently mangled commonsensical distinctions between composed and improvised music. The album’s opener, “Slylight,” wends its way through a sequence of instrumental combinations in a manner redolent of Gastr del Sol’s Camoufleur. Before the album has concluded with the melancholy country raga of “The C in Certain,” waystations between have assumed the character of sludge-rock power trio (“Creep Mission,” “Return of the Creep”), pointillistic electroacoustic improv (“Jeremiadaic”), and bejeweled nylon-string guitar miniatures (“The Bonapartes of Baltimore,” “Jack Dracula in a Bar”). David Grubbs’s solo albums often have a “the band has left the building” quality of dramatic left turns in the final act; on Creep Mission, peripatetic playing is basic strategy.

Photographer Andrew Paynter on the project : This book came about from the long term relationship I’ve had with both this band and their label, Thrill Jockey. I first came to meet some of the members through mutual friend, Tommy Guerrero. Over the years I started to contribute occasionally as a creative collaborator. The band used several of my photographs for their ‘Lazarus Taxon’ packaging. Then, in 2010 they commissioned me to both direct a music video from ‘Beacons of Ancestorship’ and to also art direct & contribute images from my ‘SF Lines’ work. The band also used other images for additional 12 inch records and then seven years went by. I did think often about the idea of going on the road with them, but was patiently awaiting a return to the stage, as they took a long break between records. So the idea to do something long form became a reality. Once it was set, I organized to jump on the road with the band to cover the entire West Coast of North America and with an addition of a trip to Arcosanti, Arizona. I brought three cameras, Leica M6, Hasselblad X-Pan and a Pentax 67. I only shot b&w film and I kept my ideas simple and did my best to not force situations, but to simply capture them from the perspective of an insider. My craving to shoot from the hip in a reportage fashion was finally fulfilled on this 10 day project. I’m proud to say, this is my very first book.
Tortoise’s Douglas McCombs on touring and the live experience: Twenty five years ago in the early days of Tortoise there was a perception that we were a recording project. This perception was probably exacerbated by the fact that we barely played any live shows in the first three years. The reality is that we were slow in getting our band up and running due to a variety of logistical circumstances, internal and external. Performing live was always a priority and a prime motivator in forming the band in the first place. By the time opportunities arose for us to tour in a self sustaining manner we couldn’t have been happier. This is what we wanted to do, and thankfully the audience showed up. Presenting our slightly unconventional material was occasionally a challenge. We had to lug around more equipment than your average band and often had to deal with temperamental synthesizers and samplers that would fail at inopportune moments. Still, it was exciting and very rewarding. These days a band at our level makes most of our living by playing live shows. It’s no secret that record sales are substantially lower than they used to be. At the same time we are all maintaining families that we didn’t have twenty years ago which makes organizing a tour exponentially more difficult. Still, every time we step on a stage we are trying to invest ourselves in the performance as much as possible so that we can give the audience a unique experience. We want you to know that we consider it a privilege to play our music for you.

Matthewdavid’s Mindflight ‘Ophiucus’ Cassette/Digital NNA has long respected and admired the work of Matthew McQueen, aka Matthewdavid. Whether through his solo music, his work with forward-thinking radio, or his own eclectic label Leaving Records, McQueen has always shown the utmost dedication and passion for his creative outputs. In the midst of the year 2017, we’re honored to collaborate with Matthewdavid’s Mindflight on his latest release ‘Ophiucus.’ As a purveyor of Modern New Age, Matthewdavid’s work represents a full-circle return to NNA’s roots and influences in new age music, and nearly a decade later we are happy to continue to give this music a home. Throughout his musical career, Matthewdavid has been fearless in taking risks and stepping into new territory in an ego-less fashion. In addition to his own diverse output, his impeccable curation and “all genre” philosophy with Leaving Records is also indicative of an openness to a wide range of styles and influences. In recent years, Matthewdavid’s work has shifted away from it’s roots in hip-hop, electronic beats, future funk and R&B, and moved toward a more pure vision of Modern New Age with his Mindflight releases and collaborations. This work has been further reinforced by his excursions into experimental radio with his “Mindflight Meditations” show on the online radio platform Dublab, where he creates improvisational meditative soundscapes both solo and with guest collaborators. In this regard, what separates Matthewdavid from other electronic musicians is his dedication to the New Age not just in sound, but in lifestyle. He strives to provide a spiritual context for his music, whether its an offering to ancient astrological wisdom, the sacred nature of friendship, or providing a vehicle for one’s development of a cosmic consciousness.

Though his style has varied throughout the years, Matthewdavid consciously maintains a signature sound palette, a trait which lends to a cohesiveness across his entire discography. Instead of eschewing his stylistic roots, he embraces and integrates them fluidly into his current work, thus preserving the signature Matthewdavid sound. On ‘Ophiucus,’ he presents two long-form compositions that vary in inspiration, but maintain consistent moods throughout. The title track ‘Ophiucus’ focuses its energy on the 13th Zodiac as a deep protector and gatekeeper of cosmic knowledge. The second track, “Geddes,” is a dedication to friend and fellow LA musician M. Geddes Gengras. While both tracks have distinct personalities, the sounds within them retain an extended serenity. They are each dense and full of cascading textures that create a naturally shifting ebb and flow, giving them a lunar or tidal flavor that synchronizes with our own biological rhythms. A vast field of dynamics encompasses the work, with high end particles scattering themselves throughout a sweeping, expansive field of low end undulations. This emphasis on texture as a tool to stimulate the ears and brain separates Matthewdavid’s work from other ambient musicians who often favor melody over texture. The music of Matthewdavid’s Mindflight encourages active listening for one to achieve elevated consciousness, as opposed to it being merely background music. Patrick Higgins & Josh Modney ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ Cassette/Digital We’re very proud to have the innovative composer and performer Patrick Higgins return to NNA Tapes, this time in a duo format with acclaimed violinist Josh Modney. On 2015’s ‘Social Death Mixtape,’ we witnessed Higgins’ talents as a composer, creating intricate electroacoustic compositions with a variety of performers. On ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ however, we hear Higgins as a skilled performer on his primary instrument, the guitar. Josh Modney comes from a similar background, having established himself as a prominent figure in New York City’s New Music circuit, with work ranging from the chamber music group International Contemporary Ensemble, to composer-performer collective Wet Ink Ensemble. Having shared the stage together for the past 5 years both as improvisers and as chamber musicians, the foundation of ’EVRLY MVSIC’ is built on a long term musical connection between Modney and Higgins, a bond that is made evident throughout these recordings.

On ‘EVRLY MVSIC,’ the two performers have taken the concept of “Early Music” as a stimulus to inspire performances of acoustic improvisation that aim at a compositional tightness, creating a musical framework based more around the feeling, rather than the sound, of Medieval struggle. Tightly coiled around highly virtuosic and austere interactions, Higgins and Modney harness the essence of Early Music both in sentiment as well as gesture, using guitar and violin in unorthodox ways that sometimes recall the sounds of early stringed instruments such as the oud and viol. Each instrument inherently carries the capacity for both classical beauty and textural violence, both of which are employed with tasteful skill and execution. Improvisation in this project is neither free nor, strictly speaking, structured. Instead, it is aimed at an emergent form in the instant, looking toward song structure in the most novel and ancient sense. Noise and extended technique are used to create a lyrical aching quality, while melody is used to create unsettling noise.

Throughout the album, EVRLY MVSIC displays a linear progression of material, building over the course of three “Partitas.” The first two utilize an arcane, sparse musical language of plucked sounds strangely reminiscent of Renaissance lute music, advancing to a lushly harmonized set of microtonal, cantabile pieces that explore the full expressive range of violin and acoustic guitar. What furthermore adds to the uniqueness of this album, however, is the third Partita, which introduces electric guitar and real-time electronic processing on both instruments to culminate in an expansive, relentlessly energetic display of refreshing new sounds. The original acoustic palette of guitar and violin is retained, but vastly expanded upon, injecting a dense, unpredictable modern edge into the archaic atmosphere. ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ presents an incredibly original fusion between ancient European musical history and distinctly American experimentalism, hinged on the nexus between improvisation and chamber music, and fueled by a deeply personal musical alliance.

Nelson Bean’s work under the name Black Hat bridges the gap between kinetic beat music and mesmeric ambient texture.
His take on modern electronic composition finds room for high definition synth programming, swathes of fine-grain drift, and layered percussion lines that evolve into webs of head-bobbing polyrhythm. Impossible World, Black Hat’s second release with Hausu Mountain after 2014’s Thought of Two LP, catches up from where his practice left off, broadening his sound over the course of a 70 minute program stuffed with dense sketches and extended cinematic set pieces. Bean’s synths ping, drift, or slither across the stereo spread, melting together or juxtaposing against one another as bubbling digital granules and smeared music box whirls. His melodies and arrangements paint detailed emotional narratives, with conflicts and resolutions embodied in sudden shifts in harmony and contrasting tonalities that drape over each other. His music fuses the insistent pulse and rigid grid layouts of techno with the abrasive skronk and inventive tonal sculpting characteristic of the noise circuit of his home base in Providence, RI. Soundsystem, his first album for Hausu Mountain as World War (after 2016’s Cables tape under his given name, and a stint as Mincemeat or Tenspeed), pushes his already overloaded practice to new peaks of dense arrangement and bodyanimating cyborg groove. While Harms lays out his tracks with components typical to classic techno, barreling through polyrhythmic kick drum configurations and evolving bass lines, the tones he chooses to highlight continually defy expectations. Massive squelching noise formants swirl through the 4/4 stomp before striking on the beat with a crisp, percussion-like attack, and other electronic voices sizzle and roar with a synthetic weight that evokes crunchy metal guitar work. Along with contemporaries like Container and Shit and Shine, World War carves out a corner of the technoid underground focused on stuttering alien rhythms, distorted percussion, and fine-grain texture. The rapidly evolving drum patterns on display on Soundsystem bubble with activity and variation, reaching some bizarre middle ground between heavily swung two-step beat music and thick gabber beatdowns - all conjured from Harms’s tiny rig centered around the Roland MC808 sampler/drum machine. World War balances the potential aggression of his heavy jams with a sense of play, conveyed in his predilection for wonky lead melodies cast off in preset-like horn tones and clipped, insectile peals of static. His jams thrive on unexpected segues and uproarious introductions of new elements to the mix. He programs his machines past their breaking point, and we watch his brain pour out at our feet.
