This Issue: Kevin Duquette at Topshelf Records

label functions by extension. Our success with a particular sound was inhibiting that, though. I’ve definitely made a focused effort over the last decade or so to re-establish the label as a home for any kind of sound. We definitely do whatever we want.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Yeah, no, that’s fine. I have no problem telling you that toe’s For Long Tomorrow is one of the best albums that has ever been created by any musical group in the history of recorded music.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

I don’t think I have a good answer for this. I enjoy the curational and dot-connecting aspects of marketing only, really. To that end, I love making samplers. And every Topshelf release gets an Obi—all our tapes, all our CDs, all our vinyl—that highlights similar releases within our catalog and gives a free download of our sampler. If you order a tape from our shop, you get a free tape sampler. If you order a CD, you get a CD sampler. I’m working on a free vinyl sampler for all vinyl orders too.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

When and where did the label begin?

Topshelf began in western Massachusetts where Seth (who co-founded it with me) and I grew up. We started it in earnest the summer of 2005 and officially incorporated it in 2006. We had no idea what we were (are) doing.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

I think people place a lot of importance in a name—especially at the inception of a project or idea. It doesn’t feel real until you name it but you want the name to be clever and perfectly suited—instantly communicative of your aesthetic and ideals, etc., etc.

It’s a lot of undue pressure for a thing that ostensibly doesn’t exist yet! So yeah, we just kinda named it this, as a placeholder. I never expected it to stick and I thought we’d come up with something different. But then we had a few releases under our belts and it became clear this is what we’re calling it. So it’s Topshelf Records. One word. It means whatever it’s come to mean after 18 years of doing it, I guess.

How has the label changed since it started?

When we started, we didn’t know what we were doing but we really really wanted to be doing it. So in that way I think a lot is the same, LOL. Early on, I think we looked at and tried to emulate what we saw other more established labels doing. Over time … we’ve gotten a lot better at doing the things that we specifically want to do—what we release, how we approach marketing, curation, community, etc.—rather than just doing what seems like everyone else is doing.

Probably the biggest change though, is just the sheer scale of things and how that informs processes. When this was a bunch of boxes in our dorm rooms and parents’ garages, we didn’t think too much about the numbers—if we loved it and wanted to support it, we did. It gets more complicated when you have employees, payroll, rent, a distribution partner, etc.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

I think Topshelf is pretty IRL-agnostic. We work with and cater to a global roster and audience, respectively. We started in the Boston area, moved to San Diego, and are now based in Portland, OR so there’s been a lot of upheaval in terms of laying down roots to a physical location over the years. I hope to start to anchor what we’re doing to here in Portland more, but at this point I don’t think there’s anywhere in particular the label feels tied to, for better and/or worse.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?

It’s word of mouth, honestly. As much as I love digitally crate digging through Bandcamp tags and combing through forums and Discords, our own roster has turned us on to a lot over the years. Lately I’ve been really into Portland’s own Kaho Matsui. Wild breakbeat synthy emo stuff, if that even makes sense.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I think many people “familiar” with the label would give many different answers to this question. Early on, we definitely became known for releasing music associated with emo, hardcore, screamo type stuff—and the label experienced a huge surge of attention to releases in this vein in the mid-aughts through the “emo revival” in the 2010s. Experiencing that success made me aware that I didn’t want it to be all we were known for, though.

Getting a lot of press attention forces your own perceptions to reconcile with external perceptions. I realized around this time success was painting us into a corner. I personally love all kinds of music and have wanted to be genre-agnostic in how the

I personally just buy whatever’s in front of me when I’m in a shop. The hand-poured stuff that Gotta Groove does is the coolest shit I have straight up ever seen by far though.

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

There’s an eclectic crowd, and aside from me and maybe a handful of other pure freaks, I don’t feel like there’s anyone who truly enjoys all of the label’s output. I feel like increasingly there isn’t a Topshelf archetype and I think that’s pretty cool.

Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?

I feel like most people who start labels can answer this affirmatively, right? I play drums on the label’s first release.

In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?

I strongly feel that governments should be enacting policies and in general doing more to incentivize and sunset processes that contribute negatively to climate, the environment, etc. I also feel that corporate lobbying has successfully pinned the onus of responsibility on the individual rather than on corporations, which is dumb as hell. We live in a society (LOL) and work in an industry wherein art is perpetually devalued. This puts sustainable livable wages directly at odds with environmental sustainability. I don’t have the answers, but I think re-evaluating what and how we manufacture and consume is a good starting point. It costs more, but our most recent vinyl titles are all manufactured with a carbon-neutral manufacturer in Europe, using granulate based on calcium zinc stabilizers instead of highly toxic heavy metal stabilizers. It’s something!

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

A great deal, yeah. We donate to various collectives and organizations like Equitable Giving Circle here in Portland. Similar to the previous question, I think individual responsibility for societal and structural problems is of course helpful and necessary, but much more is needed in the form of policy from elected officials. A record label offers an opportunity to broadcast a set of principles we wish to see enacted—to signal boost not just our roster and what they’re doing, but also the ideals we collectively espouse.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

I used to RUN THIS SHIT off Myspace LOL. You could basically run a whole-ass label from Myspace alone. But the real answer here is actually the rise and consolidation of gated platform economies. As far as where the internet has taken media and “content” (and yes, this includes music), we’re in one of the dumbest possible timelines. And I’m sorry to say, we’re all blindly walking farther away from where we need to be. We don’t have enough space on this page for this question and where I want to take it, LOL. It wasn’t even that good when Topshelf started, I’m not nostalgia tripping right now, LOL. Co-optive bullshit has always prevailed in this industry. Oops I’m being hella negative in the trade publication!!!

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment?

Now’s your chance:

I love Musique Plastique in the absolutely failing liminal space of a bygone era of American commerce that is the Lloyd Center Mall here in Portland, OR. They have a great selection of jazz, electronic, ambient, and house music, everyone who works there is a chiller, and I’m pretty sure their shop is in an old Spencer’s Gifts or PacSun.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?

Please kindly forget us.

OTIS REDDING - THE DOCK OF THE BAY - LP 5172 / 090771517210

When Otis Redding recorded "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" in late 1967, the singer knew that the song was a milestone in his creative evolution. But before Redding got the chance to explore his new direction, he was killed, along with most of his backup band the Bar-Kays, in a plane crash while on tour. Released just a few weeks after his death, the song shot to Number One on the Pop and R&B charts, eventually winning Redding a pair of posthumous Grammy awards. The album bearing the song's title was assembled by the singer's frequent collaborator Steve Cropper, who played guitar on nearly all of Otis' Stax sessions as well as co-writing "Dock of the Bay" and countless other songs with Redding. Drawing mainly from unreleased and little-heard tracks spanning Redding's three-year Stax career, the album demonstrates the depth and breadth of his talent, while hinting at what might have been.

OTIS REDDING - THE SOUL ALBUM - LP 5132 / 090771513212

The aptly titled 1966 release The Soul Album is one of the most beloved LPs in Otis Redding's catalogue, and a powerful evocation of this singular soul icon's massive talent and impressive versatility. While such original tunes as "Cigarettes and Coffee," "Good to Me," "Just One More Day" and "Any Ole Way" demonstrate Redding's remarkable songwriting talent, his remarkable interpretive gifts are spotlighted on his deeply compelling versions as Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang," Smokey Robinson's "It's Growing," Roy Head's "Treat Her Right" and the Wilson Pickett/Eddie Floyd hit "634-5789." With gritty, fluid grooves provided by the Stax studio team of Booker T. and the MGs, Isaac Hayes and the Memphis Horns, The Soul Album captures Otis Redding hitting his musical stride.

OTIS REDDING - OTIS BLUE - LP 5064 / 090771506412

Considered by many soul connoisseurs to be Otis Redding's finest and most fully realized LP, 1966's Otis Blue delivers a compelling encapsulation of all of the qualities that made Redding the greatest soul performer of his era. In addition to the artist's self-penned classics "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long," Otis Blue spotlights the artist's peerless interpretive skills, as he puts his dynamic stamp upon such iconic tunes as the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," The Temptations' "My Girl," B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby," "You Don't Miss Your Water" and Solomon Burke's "Down in the Valley." Otis also pays tribute to his idol Sam Cooke, giving his all to a trio of Cooke tunes, "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Shake" and "Wonderful World."

This record’s origin story is as elusive as Pharoah was about everything Pharoah. It was born out of a misunderstanding between him and the India Navigation producer Bob Cummins, and was recorded at a crossroads in his career with a group of musicians so unlikely that they were never all in the same room again. There was a guitarist who was also a spiritual guru, an organist who would go on to co-write and produce “The Message,” and a classically trained pianist—his wife at the time, Bedria Sanders—who played the harmonium despite never having seen one. At times ambient and serene, at others funky and modal, PHAROAH radically departed from his earlier work. It would become one of the artist’s most beloved records and one of the great works of the 20th century.

With Pharoah Sanders’ blessing, the limited edition embossed version of this 2 LP box set presents the definitive, remastered version of PHAROAH, his seminal record from 1977, along with two previously unreleased live performances of his masterpiece “Harvest Time.” This is the first official rerelease of PHAROAH, which has been bootlegged often since its original release in 1977. These exceptional live versions of “Harvest Time”—which Pharoah performed during an intense European tour in the summer of ’77 and which are included here for the first time—turn the original, beloved composition on its head.

PHAROAH will be released a year after the legendary tenor saxophonists’ untimely passing, and two years after the release of what was to become his final album, the widely acclaimed PROMISES, a collaboration between the composer Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra (Luaka Bop, 2021). The first pressing of this limited edition box set comes with an embossed cover and is accompanied by never-before-shared photographs and ephemera, as well as a 24-page booklet featuring rarely seen photographs, interviews with many of the participants, and a conversation with Pharoah himself.

“WORLDS BEST GUITARIST

OVERVIEW

Guitar luminary and Tuareg folk hero Omara “Bombino” Moctar knows the nomadic life well. Being constantly on the road for his music while also perpetually on the move throughout the Sahel region of Africa is the norm. So when the pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt, Bombino found himself in an unfamiliar space: being in one place. What resulted was ‘Sahel’, the followup to 2018’s ‘Deran’, a record that turned Bombino into the firstever GRAMMY®️-nominated artist from Niger.

This new collection of songs, named after the African region spanning East-West from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, is Bombino’s most personal, powerful, and politically-minded work to date. It’s also his most sonically diverse, a quality he set out to achieve from the start, and one that is meant to directly mirror the complex tapestry of cultures and people that make up the Sahel region itself.

To bring the songs to life, Bombino worked with Welsh producer/ mixer David Wrench (David Byrne, Frank Ocean, Caribou, Goldfrapp, Erasure, The xx, Sampha), decamping with his bandmates to a studio in Casablanca for ten days to lay down the album. The songs that comprise ‘Sahel’ range in theme from the plight of the Tuareg, to the ache of lost love, to the follies of youth.

Kassa Overall is a Grammy-nominated musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer who melds avant-garde experimentation with hip-hop production techniques to tilt the nexus of jazz and rap in unmapped directions. On his Warp Records debut, ANIMALS, Kassa pushes his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision further. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Virtuoso musos appear alongside rap poets, including Danny Brown, Wiki, Lil B, and Shabazz Palaces. Top-flight jazz improvisation weaves in and out of orchestral string arrangements by Jherek Bischoff. The album’s diverse, all-star roster of collaborators includes several of his close friends, like vocalists Nick Hakim, Laura Mvula, Francis and the Lights, and jazz stars like Theo Croker and Vijay Iyer.

Messages to God is the eighth solo studio record from Sarah Mary Chadwick Messages to God is perhaps a more universal record in terms of its content than 2021’s Me and Ennui Are Friends, Baby, yet it is still unquestionably intimate. Like all of Chadwick’s music, the album is centered around her completely singular approach to songwriting and storytelling, delivering one of Chadwick’s most dynamic records to date.

New Zealand born, Melbourne-based Sarah Mary Chadwick is a gifted and singular songwriter, uniquely attuned to the minutiae of human emotion, not unlike Phil Eleverum’s work as Mount Eerie and Daniel Johnston’s adventures on tape. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Chadwick’s songs are unsparing, brutal, and absolutely lovely. Eight records into her solo career, following the recent success of 2019’s The Queen Who Stole The Sky, 2020’s Please Daddy, and 2021’s Me and Ennui Are Friends, Baby, comes Messages to God, her first ever record made alongside award winning producer, Tony Epsie (oracle to The Avalanches).

More spooky tales of VAMPIRES and DEVILS from the leader of underground pioneers HALF

JAPANESE – JAD FAIR – and new songwriting partner, the cassette culture savant SAMUEL LOCKE WARD. Hold onto your wigs as you step off the path into the cemetery mist for a monster filled adventure into the unknown!

Jad Fair once told me there are only two types of songs, “love songs and monster songs” – and here we have 18 prime examples of the latter… Woo. I’m excited. Goblins, shrinking men, vampires, invisible men… none of your rubbish two-bit monsters here. Woo. I am stoked. A new collaboration between Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward! Wait… who?

Sam Locke Ward is a home taper and comic book zine maker from Iowa. He says, “I like chords with some high notes and some low notes in them but with an emphasis on the sad note.”

Jad Fair (born June 9, 1954) is an American singer, guitarist, graphic artist, and founding member of lo-fi alternative rock group Half Japanese. Kurt Cobain once wrote, “With my headphones on, Jad and l share our little secret walking through shopping malls and airports”, but he’s been a long time dead now so we’ll just enjoy that sweet imagery and move along.

LP-KRS-738LE

Destroy All Monsters is like Happy Hearts, sort of not. It’s minimal. It’s beautiful. There is something that sounds like a xylophone. There is a lot of repetition, building tension. Many of the songs contain warnings, especially when it comes to being stalked by invisible men or walking with the walking dead. It is everything Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds is not. It is spooky, extra-spooky. It is totally engaging. If it was a book, it would be called unputdownable. But it’s not a book. It’s an album – and a very heart-warming, generously-given album too. There’s no room for negativity here. Monsters often get a bad press, but not here. Jad and Sam see the beauty and delight in everything. Often, it feels like a High School Confessional, except most High School Confessionals do not concern themselves with monsters. If you’re an old school Half Japanese fan, you may want to skip straight to the loopy playground chant of ‘Pumpkin Head’. There again, you may not. This is not Half Japanese. This is Jad and Sam.

Recorded entirely in 2021, Perfect Worlds, the newest album by San Francisco's mysterious lo-fi pop legend Tony Jay, delivers an intimate record of thirteen dreamy, assured arrangements that further cements Tony Jay's status as a dejected crooner of the quotidian par excellence. Drawing inspiration from failed relationships, lack of sleep, a bicycle injury, and depression, Tony Jay (headed by Flowertown/Sad Eyed Beatniks member and SF scene mainstay Michael Ramos) pairs catchy melodies and hushed vocals with ethereal instrumental tracks.

Studded with instant classics, Tony Jay's new album encapsulates the isolation and loneliness of the past few years. "In a perfect world I'd find a place down in the basement," begins the title track, and the refrain repeats, "You just can't escape it." Interspersed with otherworldly instrumental tracks that call to mind a machine struggling to work underwater and whale mating calls combined with droning synth, horns, chimes, this album also provides space for listeners to make new worlds of their own. Our times may be inescapable, but we're fortunate to be able to wall ourselves in with fantasies of our own creation alongside "Perfect Worlds."

THE BETHS EXPERT IN A DYING FIELD (DELUXE)

In September 2022, The Beths released their third album, Expert In A Dying Field. The response was immediately positive and earned them a place on a great deal of Best-Album-ofthe-Year lists like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Stereogum, to name a few. One year later, the band will release Expert In A Dying Field (Deluxe) with bonus material, including singles “A Real Thing” and “Watching The Credits,” along with acoustic and demo versions of album tracks and one never-before-heard demo “Keep The Distance.”

On The Beths’ new album Expert In A Dying Field, Elizabeth Stokes’ songwriting positions her somewhere between being a novelist and a documentarian. The songs collected here are autobiographical, but they’re also character sketches of relationships -- platonic, familial, romantic -- and more importantly, their aftermaths. The shapes and ghosts left in absences. The question that hangs in the air: what do you do with how intimately versed you’ve become in a person, once they’re gone from your life?

Most of Expert was recorded at guitarist Jonathan Pearce’s studio on Karangahape Road in Ta–maki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) -- and sometimes in the building’s cavernous stairwell at 1am -- toward the end of 2021, until they were interrupted by a fourmonth national lockdown. They traded notes remotely for months, songwriting from afar and fleshing out the arrangements alone, the first time they’d written together in such a way. The following February, The Beths left the country for the first time in more than two years to tour across the US, and simultaneously finish mixing the album on the road. That latter half felt more collaborative, with everyone on-hand to trade notes in real time, until it all culminated in a chaotic three-day studio mad-dash in Los Angeles. There, Expert finally became the record they were hearing in their heads.

Stokes strings it all together through her singular songwriting lens, earnest and selfeffacing, zeroing in on the granules of doubt and how they snowball. Did I do the wrong thing? Or did you? And are we still good people at the end of it? She isn’t interested in villains, but instead interested in just telling the story. That insecurity and thoughtfulness, translated into universality and understanding, has been the guiding light of The Beths’ output since 2016. In the face of pain, there’s no dwelling on internal anguish -- instead, through The Beths’ music, our shortcomings are met with acceptance. And Expert In A Dying Field is the most tactile that tenderness has been.

'Night Melody' was born out of and shaped by long hours working into the night. It retains a nocturnal sound, capturing the mystery often associated with the late hours. As Rival Consoles describes it, "I found myself, in a silent home, with the days getting dark very early. I’ve never before in my life been affected by the lack of light so much. I just remember it always being night time. I would either make music into the night, go out drinking with friends, or go to parties and dance into the early hours, every day, week after week, month after month, until eventually the days became brighter again."

The opening statement ‘Pattern of the North’ starts off with a collage of spliced synth melodies, inspired by anxiety that accompanies going home for Christmas. It’s followed by ‘Johannesburg’, an early sketch gradually filled out during his tour in South Africa. “After playing it around some of the cities, I got a lot of inspiration to bring it to life and push it into something that really moves me. I think this is one of my most colourful pieces of music, with its driving rhythm and almost a homage to Terry Riley’s ‘In C’ towards the end, with a build of very simple, hypnotic parts. I especially love that for over five minutes the piece is tied to just one note. This makes the ending very dramatic, because all of a sudden there is this harmonic change.”

‘Lone’ started life around the time Ryan was working on his ‘Sonne’ EP in 2014. It’s the result of constant adjustments to find the perfect balance of fragility and assurance. As everything on the album, it’s a carefully considered, emotionally mature piece. “I think, as I get older, I need music to represent something and not just sound interesting, though of course the two are connected.” The closing statement ‘What Sorrow’ is a fitting end to the album, building from gentle melancholia to a joyous crescendo. It’s a sensibility that’s central to the record; joy and sorrow both find their counterpoints.

“This record is very personal to me and I hope it offers something for other people, as it helped me to make it and to listen to it. Almost every synth line was recorded intuitively, without perfection but with a lot of intention and expression. I’m not interested in making something sad or making something happy. I want music to be bittersweet, to be more complex, like life – containing moments of vibrant colour and hope, as much as darkness and sadness.”

Ryan is set to embark on an exciting tour this Autumn/Winter, across North America and Europe. The tour kicks off in notable cities such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, and Mexico City. The journey culminates in an unforgettable finale at the enchanting Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand.

‘Night Melody’ will be available on 12” Blue vinyl, August 4th

REISSUE OF THE 1980S ALBUM PLUS 6 UNRELEASED TRACKS

OVERVIEW:

Soundway presents Circus Underwater’s 1984 self-titled masterpiece. Remastered and extended to a double LP, this deluxe version includes six unreleased tracks unearthed from the original ¼” tapes, and presented with an insert, including never-before-seen photos and the fascinating story behind the music.

Featuring artwork from Grateful Dead collaborator, David Lundquist, the album encapsulates a unique moment in time. Echoing the story of a generation that grew up in the 50s and 60s where music was everything, two friends embark on a journey of experimentation which begins in the beatnik suburbs of Washington DC and travels to the heart of hippie San Francisco. The result is an opus that fearlessly blurs the boundaries of genres and embraces diverse influences. Elements of prog, rock, ambient and wave music culminate in an odyssey that seamlessly bridges the gap between the spaced-out creativity of the 70s and electronic music of today

The album appeared suddenly Within about a week, A Family Light was pretty much fully written “Despite the old cliché, the inspiration for this album stemmed from heartbreak,” describes band member Sergio Trevino. “Fresh out of a failed relationship, I took to writing, resisting the temptation to create bitter or angsty love songs I tried to channel my emotions into something larger Looking back, with the benefit of time and distance from the album, I realize that it kinda became a response to my observations of the family dynamics, and how strange and complicated those predetermined roles are ”

This project unites artists from two labels, Chinese based bié Records and Latin America based Shika Shika, separated by very contrasting cultures and thousands of kilometers but united by shared values and a shared musical vision.

Driven by values of creativity, borderless music and fairness for artists, both labels showcase artists that unite electronica with ambient and folk music, purposefully existing outside of the globalized, copy-paste of the mainstream music industry.

A mix of intrigue and mutual respect led to the birth of this compilation, with the two labels teaming up to match together a group of their artists to remix each other. The result is a widely imaginative, fresh and diverse selection of tracks featuring some of the prominent producers such as DaYe, Lim Giong; Hualun, Sun Dawei and Rainsoft from bié records and DJ Raff, Terror:Cactus, Numa Gama, Barrio Lindo and El Búho from Shika Shika.

The compilation is a testament to music's power to transcend language and cultural background as artists from hugely different contexts unite to explore and build on each other's creative visions.

About bié records

As we are still figuring out what it means to be a ‘listener’ in the global context today, the ambition of bié Records as a label is not to document the turbulences of times, but to provide musicians with equal opportunities to speak out and impetus to thoroughly express themselves. Our hope is that the natural state of music – fun and spirituality –will break free from the ‘golden rules’ of the much-developed global standards.

Chloé Robinson + DJ ADHD

Title: Dream EP

Release date: 2023/09/15 – 15th September 2023

In 2022, in their review of the Chloé Robinson and DJ ADHD ‘Steamin’ EP, Resident Advisor predicated that “we'll be hearing from Chloé Robinson for summers to come…” This summer that predication is set to come true as the Pretty Weird label founder, DJ and producer Chloé Robinson once again teams up creative partner and fellow club-sounds tour-de-force DJ ADHD on a collaborative new EP set for release on fabric Original this September.

Individually and together, Chloé Robinson and DJ ADHD are becoming one of the most formidable and creative pairings in the electronic music circuit today. Dream EP is a dedicated and detailed collection of sounds that melds an enthralling blend of their signature polyrhythmic techno, bassline, UK garage and more, cementing the artists as multi -skilled producers with an array of sonic strings to their bow. Primarily though, at their heart, these tracks simply lace togeth er enthralling, dancefloor oriented club -music bliss. Three collaborative tracks from the pair plus one solo track from DJ ADHD make up the project.

With previous releases and collaborations like Chloé’s production debut on the EP Steamin’, which included the Four Tet remix of ‘Pax’, and subsequent explosive tracks like the ‘Get In The Bin’ featuring Nikki Nair, the duo have made a considerable impact with their productions, seeing in rave reviews from publications like Resident Advisor, DJ Mag and Mixmag. Now, the duo are back with a four-track EP that omits rhythm, textures, flavours and vocals that bring us straight back into no-frills dance floor bliss.

Both are rising and hotly-tipped artists in their own right, but the pair have a unique strength as a duo, with the ability to collaborate on a string of releases, projects and B2B moments in the booth, that promise to melt genres and captivate listeners both on and off a heated dance floor.

Dreamland is the third album from Italian ambient band PCM. This time out, the trio of Francesco Perra (P), Matteo Cantaluppi (C), Matteo Milea (M) veer away from the inter-cellular themes of their previous collections to shed aural light on what humans spend most of their life doing: sleeping. Each track on Dreamland focuses on a phase of sleep from that ever-frustrating half-awake feeling to tranquil R.E.M. and from disaffecting nightmares to blissful dreaming. As a result, each of the album's works float by, some with a cloudiness that mirrors confused sleepy feelings and others that display the vividness of the most memorable of dreams.

Mad Myth Science

Mad Myth Science

Mad Myth Science is the creative convergence of Molly Jones (saxophone, flute, toys), Julian Otis (voice, electronics), Wilson Tanner Smith (cello, harmonica, bells & whistles), and Ben Zucker (cornet, vibraphone, percussion). All four musicians have a bevy of multi-disciplinary achievements to their names; while working together, they put these in service of a blend of shapechanging acoustic group sounds, characteristic of many of the notable experimental music scenes in their homebase of Chicago.

pioneer Sun Ra: where any “mad science” is concerned, the mixtures of genres, instruments, and media at play in their performances are hardly villainous, but aspire to a level of unbound. The circumstances in which the band forged their group identity—over Skype and Zoom connections as a promising collaboration was thrown off by the onset COVID-19—involved their own kinds of madness and science.

Online, offline, as “new music” or “jazz”, as sound in itself or augmented through across Chicago. This album is a snapshot of that experience, select edits of hours of playing in the renowned Experimental Sound Studio. It shows part of what makes the group what it is: the invocations, surfaces, energies, and contemplations that reach us as sounds; but like any experiment, a catalyst to bring all involved into something further.

THANK

TORTURE CUBE / DEAD DOG IN A DITCH

STREET DATE: 21 JULY 2023

LABEL: ZEN F.C.

Leeds band Thank return on 13 June with new single ‘Torture Cube’, the first track to be taken from an upcoming double Aside 7” “Torture Cube / Dead Dog In A Ditch ”, out via Yard Act’s Zen F.C label on 21 July.

“Torture Cube / Dead Dog In A Ditch” is a slab of guitar fury filtered through Nine Inch Nails’ industrial metal and Full of Hell’s blunt-force hardcore plus a healthy dose of humour fed by one too many nights soundtracked by donk pranksters Lobsta B and DJ Fingerblast.

Speaking on the release, vocalist/guitarist Freddy VinehillCliffe says, “This was our first time in the studio with our friend and Leeds avant -metal legend Steve Myles on drums, and like a lot of our peers it marked a return to honing tunes in a grotty rehearsal spot rather than writing remotely. The result feels like it has that pent up, fraught, fidgety energy of our first EP, combined with the more ambitious arrangements we started to experiment with on our debut LP ‘Thoughtless Cruelty’. Personally, I think it’s quite good actually.”

Thank formed in 2016 out of Leeds’ notorious DIY collective, CHUNK. Over the next half-decade they gained acclaim for the EPs ‘Sexghost Hellscape’ and ‘Please’, toured in mainland Europe, and caught the attention of heavy hitters like Idles with their combination of anxious disco grooves and harsh noise freakouts.

Thank become the latest in a string of artists to release via Yard Act’s Zen F.C. label, following on from the likes of Nuha Ruby Ra, Baba Ali, Benefits and Yard Act themselves all of who’s 7” broke into the UK vinyl singles charts and Sheffield’s one man rave collective Acid Klaus , who’s Step On My Travelator LP was released in November 2022.

Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Jogo Duro, a collaboration between Ilhan Ersahin and some outstanding São Paulo musicians Guizado, Ze Nigro, Samuel Fraga, Chicao & Tony Gordin who also happen to be great friends. These are players who will be familiar to those following the careers of Céu, Otto, Curumin, Tulipa Ruiz and the late, great Gal Costa. This record is the result of the amount of time Ilhan has spent in São Paulo over the last decade due to putting on the Nublu Jazz Fest there every year. With all the contacts, connections and friendships formed over the course of making an annual music festival happen, musical cross-pollination (usually simply referred to as "jams") was inevitable but this time it was decided to do it in a studio with tape rolling rather than on stage, which is certainly a more productive approach than merely talking about it over beers at a local bar!

Everything happened fairly spontaneously over three days in the studio, everybody brought songs, ideas and creative energy and before you know it an album was born, which will be released in November after three singles come out over the spring and summer.

Description / Bio:

Devendra Banhart' s Flying Wig, is a landscape of recurrent dualities; a can of paradoxes, a box of worms. What goes up, must come down, eventually. Battle-scarred by life and loss, Banhart found himself despondent, folded inwards; finding it difficult to speak, let alone sing.

Turning his back on Los Angeles’ wailing sirens , he packed the bones that would become Flying Wig ’s songs into a bag and took to the secluded woodland of a Topanga canyon. The album is the actualization of a precious friendship with the acclaimed solo artist , multi-instrumentalist , Mexican Summer stablemate and producer of Flying Wig, Cate Le Bon. The pair’s coming together is one prophesied by the mirror-image titles of their early solo albums ( Banhart ’s 2002 Oh Me Oh My to Le Bon’s 2009 Me Oh My) and a tenderness built on crude haircuts (“we finally met, soon after she was cutting my hair with a fork and that was that ”) and home-made tattoos but never previously translated into the recording studio. “ She’s the only person I wanted to make this record with,” Banhart admits. “ We set out to make a record sonically unlike anything I have made before – with a new creative partner at the helm. We definitely wanted a new sound, electronic yet organic and warm…we wanted to draw out and emphasize the emotional aspect of a synthesizer.”

The redwood and pine-surrounded cabin studio (once owned by Neil Young) where Banhart was “constantly listening to the Grateful Dead ” somehow birthed something slick, city popadjacent and Eno-esque. The product of a ritualistic creative practice that melts down and re-casts as it mulls, the stuff of sadness beautified as it changes shape culminating in a record that “sounds like getting a very melancholic massage, or weeping, but in a really nice outfit if I ’m going to cry”, Banhart mentions, “ I want to do it in my best dress.”

THE BREEDERS

Last Splash (the 30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition)

Double LP w/bonus etched 12” including two previously unreleased tracks + JCD

Cut at half speed at Abbey Road by Miles Showell, now spanning two LPs and running at 45rpm

A defining album of the 90s, Last Splash by The Breeders turns 30 this year. To celebrate, the band have returned to the original tapes to give it its first-ever remaster, and by doing so have also unearthed two lost tracks that will delight fans.

Recorded by the ‘classic’ Breeders line-up of Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson and featuring singles ‘Cannonball’ and ‘Divine Hammer’, Last Splash was “an alt-rock classic” (Pitchfork’s Top 100 Records of 1990s) on release; a fast seller too, quickly attaining Platinum status in the US.

Despite having had the boxset treatment on its 20th birthday, the album was still left to be remastered so 10 years on, the original ½” tapes were taken out of the archives and have been lovingly worked on by Kim Deal, Benjamin Mumphrey and Miles Showell (Abbey Road).

Never sounding so good, the album for its 30th anniversary, it’s getting the ultimate vinyl pressing. Entitled Last Splash (the 30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition), this new version has been cut at half speed at Abbey Road by Miles Showell, now spanning two LPs and running at 45rpm. A Japanese cd edition will also be available.

This edition contains an exclusive, one-sided etched 12” which features two previously unreleased tracks – ‘Go Man Go’ and ‘Divine Mascis’ (‘Go Man Go’ is a track that Kim co-wrote with Black Francis while ‘Divine Mascis’ is a different version of ‘Divine Hammer’ with Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis on lead vocals). Both tracks originate from the original sessions and were left forgotten until the sessions were exhumed to create this new master.

The attention to detail continues to the album’s art, which equally celebrates Vaughan Oliver’s iconic sleeve. With Vaughan sadly no longer with us, his long-time design partner Chris Bigg has gloriously reimagined the album’s sleeve for this new version.

After forty years of marriage, Buddy and Julie Miller have learned to welcome a song however it arrives, questioning only where the song is taking them rather than where it originated. There’s no process, no assembly-line procedure, just an openness to those bursts of inspiration and those hours of refinement, which means their fourth album together, In the Throes, sounds lively and diverse, eccentric and slightly askew: a deeply soulful collision of mournful gospel, dusty country, cosmic blues, lusty rockabilly, ecstatic r&b, and anything else that crosses their minds.

Lydia Loveless nothing’s gonna stand in my way again

One of Pitchfork’s “Most Anticipated Albums of 2023”

Co-produced (with Lydia) And Engineered by Grammy-winner Sean Sullivan (Sturgill Simpson, Shemekia Copeland, Molly Tuttle)

The follow-up to Lydia’s massively acclaimed Daughter album

“One of America’s best and boldest songwriters” — AllMusic

Nothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again continues the evolution of Lydia Loveless: a fiercely brave writer who bluntly assesses their life in song.

Loveless’ trademark candidness and razorsharp wit remain as they lay bare the raw pain of struggles with alcohol and depression, a breakup with a longtime boyfriend, and uncertainty about the future. And while she holds onto a vintagecountry heart and a heartland-rock soul, this album also presents something new and matured, with a sound that stretches to include echoes of Rumors and Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac.

Loveless has always been a brutally honest songwriter, one whose articulation of love, heartbreak and bad habits is wrapped not only in catchy melodies but also her finesse with words.

Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again is a bold declaration from a person who has survived a lot. Here they lay out not only their pain and vulnerability, but also the strength and resiliency they’ve earned along the way, that only Loveless could hold.

Barrel Select is the designation reserved for the most essential albums in Bloodshot’s catalog. And Wayne Hancock’s A-Town Blues is absolutely essential.

Cut in 20 hours with Grammy-winning producer Lloyd Maines (Home by The Chicks), this album is where Wayne “The Train” Hancock earned his reputation as the king of juke joint swing.

A shotgun blast to the chest of anyone who ever complained that nobody does ‘em like Hank anymore, A-Town Blues swings, cooks, and yodels across 14 tracks that just begged to be pressed on vinyl. We’re damn proud that we finally made that happen, wrapping it in all new artwork that looks as not-new as the record demands.

JENNY OWEN YOUNGS AVALANCHE

WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: SEPTEMBER 22, 2023

In the decade since Jenny Owen Youngs last released a full-length album, she’s toured the world, co-written a #1 hit single, launched a wildly popular podcast, landed a book deal, placed songs in a slew of films and television series, moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles to coastal Maine, and gotten married, divorced, and married again. She’s done everything, it seems, except release another album….until now.

Avalanche, Youngs’ exceptional debut for Yep Roc records, offers up an achingly beautiful exploration of loss, resilience, and growth from an artist who’s experienced more than her fair share of each in recent years. Produced by Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, The Hold Steady, Cassandra Jenkins, Josh Ritter) and written with a series of friends including S. Carey, Madi Diaz, The Antlers’ Peter Silberman, and Christian Lee Hutson, the songs are deceptively serene here, layering Youngs’ infectious pop sensibilities atop lush, dreamy arrangements that often belie the swift emotional currents lurking underneath. Her performances, meanwhile, are riveting and nuanced to match, gentle yet insistent as they reckon with the pain of regret and the joy of redemption, sometimes in the very same breath. The result is the most raw and arresting release of Youngs’ remarkable career, a brutally honest, deeply vulnerable work of self-reflection that learns to make peace with the past as it transforms doubt and grief into hope and transcendence.

HIGHLIGHTS:

☛ Produced by Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, The Hold Steady, Cassandra Jenkins, Josh Ritter)

☛ Features songwriting collaborations from S. Carey, Madi Diaz, The Antlers’ Peter Silberman, and Christian Lee Hutson

If youʼre a fan of Daptone Records, chances are youʼve read or heard the name Victor Axelrod, and even if you havenʼt, youʼve heard music from his hand. As a producer, arranger, recording and mixing engineer, and keyboardist, his creativity has extended across more than two decades of the labelʼs releases, even dating to its prehistory with Desco Records. If You Ask Me To... , the first LP under his name for the label, is a collection of singles released between 2007-2023 as well as unreleased tracks from Sugar Minott and Binky Griptite. The genesis of which came via an 11th hour request from Daptone for a Sharon Jones remix (2007) that resulted in the reggae version of “How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?” found here. This opened the door to additional explorations of reggae/soul synergies within the catalog, affirming the musical and cultural link between Daptoneʼs core soul sound and Axelrodʼs passion for Jamaican music. While previous projects like Ticklah Vs. Axelrod and Roots Combination (produced under the alias Ticklah) were inspired by the Jamaica of the 1970s and 80s, this set specifically channels an earlier period in the 1960s when Jamaica was both strikingly original in its continuum of genres but also closely and empathetically attuned to Black American music. Through Axelrodʼs exceptional taste and the notable contributions of guitarist Tom Brenneck, original tapes from Bob & Gene's MoDo discography, members of The Frightnrs, and others from the NYC reggae community, the legacy of trailblazing Jamaican artists like Alton Ellis, Tony Gregory, and Ken Parker continue to resonate and inspire a whole new generation of reggae and soul enthusiasts.

SUGAR MINOTT ONE STEP AHEAD

Daptone Records is proud to present the latest offering from producer extraordinaire, Victor Axelrod. Initially  voiced over a midi demo at Axelrodʼs Donʼt Trip Studio, “One Step Ahead” is one of the last recordings made during Sugar Minottʼs exceptionally influential career. The backing track, courtesy of The Inversions, was cut at Diamond Mine studio during the same session as the rocksteady update of Bob & Geneʼs “I Can Be Cool”. With Axelrod at the helm the team transforms the cult classic ballad, originally recorded by Aretha Franklin, into an ethereal piece of rocksteady magic. In addition to writing a wealth of original material, Sugar Minott had a deep appreciation and a passion for not only Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae (which he helped develop) but also American soul and pop music. He brought enduring versions of Michael Jacksonʼs “Good Thing Going,” The Persuaders “Love Gonna Pack Up” and Dionne Warwick's “A House Is Not A Home” to the reggae idiom. “One Step Ahead” fits perfectly in this tradition, effortlessly bridging the gap between American pop and Jamaican soul.

Indonesian trio Grrrl Gang build on their considerable worldwide buzz with Spunky!, their full-length debut album. Released on 27 September 2023 by Green Island Music in partnership with exclusive licensees Kill Rock Stars (for North and South America), Trapped Animal Records (UK and EU) and Big Romantic Records (Japan and Taiwan), the album is preceded by its title track and first single which drops on May 31.

Spunky! arrives following some major life changes for Angeeta Sentana (vocals, guitar), Akbar Rumandung (bass, vocals) and Edo Alventa (guitar, vocals), including a switch in locale from Yogyakarta, the city where they formed the band while still in college. “This is Grrrl Gang’s first release after we graduated and got day jobs that made us have to move to Jakarta, which is undeniably 180 degrees compared to Yogya,” says Rumandung. “But moving to Jakarta enabled us to work with Lafa on Spunky! from start to finish.”

Overall, Spunky! is the sound of a band not content to rest on its laurels, despite gathering an impressive list of achievements since Grrrl Gang first got together in 2016 and proceeded to take the local, regional, and international indie scenes by storm, leading to a prestigious performance slot on the pandemic-induced online edition of SXSW 2021 and an A- review that esteemed music critic Robert Christgau bestowed upon Here to Stay!, the 2020 compilation of their early singles. According to Rumandung, “We want this album to show that we’ve changed, that Grrrl Gang is a band that isn’t stuck in one place and that we always have the urge to discover new things.”

In other words, Spunky! proves that Grrrl Gang are – to borrow a familiar phrase – here to stay.

‘Gentle Confrontation’, Loraine James's third Hyperdub album, opens a new chapter of her real and sonic life in which she examines her past and present. It's a positively languid, enjoyably disjointe d set made while listening to her teenage favourites; math rock and emo-electronic such as DNTEL, Lusine and Telefon Tel Aviv. The album also features an ever more diverse set of peers, placing them in her unusual musical settings and drawing out sensi tive and reflexive performances. At other times the album stretches out into a drifting ambience as if seeking a sense of bliss in the everyday. ‘Gentle Confrontation’ is about relationships (especially familial), understanding, and giving back a little grac e and care, while the tone of the record criss -crosses watery ambience with denatured rhythm and asmr beats. These 16 tracks are Loraine's best work yet, and a personal and musical leap forward, delivering a totally unique vision of electronic pop music.

Joe Armon-Jones & Maxwell Owin - Archetype

Release Date: 23rd June 2023

22nd Sept. 2023

Format: 2LP Vinyl

Cat No: AQU006LP

UPC: 5056614702286

Archetype is an exorcism of South London’s underground spirit It’s a sound-world which draws on its ancestral echoes as equally as it captures the pulse of a city on the edge of evolution The twelve-track collaborative record is the product of two magnetised forces who should almost repel: producer, composer and keyboard player Joe Armon-Jones, and producer/DJ Maxwell Owin At the fore of the scene south of the river, they draw on different instincts, different disciplines, different strengths - and converge them to make something which is both challenging and startlingly fresh Guest features on the record include Lex Amor, Shabaka Hutchings, Fatima, Rocks FOE, O the Ghost, Mala, Maysia Osu & YUIS

Archetype is caught somewhere between the club and the bedroom, both communal and intimate – something common to Joe’s world of jazz, soul and improvisation and Maxwell’s, of the sprawling sounds of hardcore continuum, from jungle to dubstep and drill The duo were entranced by the philosophies that bind these subcultural worlds together. Following their 2017 debut project Idiom, the duo has gone from strength to strength having produced, written and collaborated with the likes of Ezra Collective, Greentea Peng, Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome and Moses Boyd. The Archetype soundscape spans almost six years, its beginning indistinct from Idiom’s end, but it required a suspension of reality that only lockdown could bring for the project to take on a shape of its own

FILE UNDER: “M” Morgan, Sally Anne

RELEASE DATE: 22-September-2023

Multi-instrumentalist Sally Anne Morgan, known for her work as part of The Black Twig Pickers, and half of House and Land (with Sarah Louise), cultivates seeds sown by folk musics and psychedelia. Carrying tills the rich soil of Appalachian traditions and her rural North Carolina surroundings into warm, reflective songs about the weight people carry with them, as well as Morgan’s own pregnancy and the birth of her first child. Bridging the more freeform, expansive leanings of 2021’s Cups and the lucid beauty of her acclaimed 2020 debut Thread, Carrying finds Morgan imbuing her masterfully crafted songs with more subtle and intricate arrangements. The album’s exploratory nature is anchored by a full band comprised of some of the most thoughtful players in the psychedelic folk and “cosmic country” spheres, including a guest appearance by Ripley Johnson (Rose City Band, Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo), and the foundational rhythm section of fellow The Black Twig Pickers collaborators: drummer Nathan Bowles (Steve Gunn Band, Pelt), guitarist Andrew Zinn, and bassist/engineer Joe Dejarnette Morgan finds unity in the burdens and joys, tensions and releases of modern living as a common thread that people bear in their day-to-day lives. “So much of what we accumulate and carry around with us burdens us, but we also can’t or don’t know how to let go,” says Morgan. The profoundness and mundanity of that weight ran parallel for Morgan as she literally carried her child to term: the utter commonality of enduring what billions of parents before her had, and the awesome power of the human body and spirit, the complicated and unpredictable wash of emotions that come with nurturing and nourishing another life.

Morgan’s artistic practices emphasize connections to the natural world and a modern reframing of rural traditions. In her music, her work as a letterpress artist, and on her rural homestead, Morgan implements conventions from bygone eras to craft work that honors and expands on those traditions. Morgan’s myriad of influences and their deep connections stretch from the psychedelic leanings of Trees and the Third Ear Band, to folk singers like Jean Ritchie and Nic Jones, to Kentucky fiddler Clyde Davenport, to Pauline Oliveros and Johanna Brouk, to their roots and circling back again. The process of composing and arranging the songs across Carrying found Morgan exploring the depths of her own experiences, inspired as always by traditional Appalachian music, but free to explore and abandon any false notions of authenticity.

Colleen’s mastery of the art of sound sculpting is fully displayed on Le jour et la nuit du réel, a beautiful 21 song double album that manages to explore the intersections of the material and the imagined, a sonic odyssey unearthing soul from synthesis. The album is organized into several movements. Each movement employs different synthesis settings, but with distinctive chords and motifs that provide a through line, guiding the listener through gorgeous sonic landscapes. Schott elaborates: “To me, the capacity of synthesis to alter - subtly or radically - the physical embodiment in sound of the same series of notes is akin to how, when given new information about a person or a situation, we can reevaluate our initial perception of what we thought was the “reality” of that person or situation, sometimes drastically so”.

Le jour et la nuit du réel‘s astounding breadth of texture and emotion were sculpted from a surprisingly minimal setup even for Schott – an all-analog combination of one monophonic semi-modular synth, the Moog Grandmother, and two delays, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo and her trusted Moogerfooger Analog Delay. A kaleidoscopic range of sounds speckle the album’s seven suites which mimic the range and nuance of emotions, both deeply personal and communal, parsed into two distinctive halves that represent day and night and the contrasting feelings each encompasses. One of the most consistently exciting voices in contemporary music, French composer Cécile Schott aka Colleen’s new album Le jour et la nuit du réel, is a gorgeous wellspring of sonic delights. It is a double album filled with gorgeous details that rewards the listener with constant revelations and sonic delights.

Vienna has a storied history as a ground-zero for new music. Radian, who call Vienna home, embodies the city’s spirit of innovation. Martin Brandlmayr (drums, electronics), Martin Siewert (guitar, electronics) and John Norman (bass) are stalwarts of the European contemporary music community. Distorted Rooms presents a dazzling new elevation of Radian’s employment and manipulation of microtones with a new emphasis on abstracted guitar motifs, often employing a more loop-based or electronic approach to the guitar’s sonics. Radian’s visionary approach to composition speaks to lifetime working in forward-thinking music. The trio expertly hone in on sounds often removed from the sheen of the recording process and mine them for unique, rich textural sound palettes which they then meticulously arrange. Distorted Rooms creative process began with multi-stage recording of often the smallest of sounds from pick-scrapes to an amplifier’s latent hiss. These slivers of sound are then restructured and processed through a variety of techniques that transform them drastically. Radian have always been interested in sounds that might be considered byproducts and maximizing their creative and aural potential. Smaller gestures like switching a pedal on and off or toggling the guitar’s pickup are mic’d and spun into textures that crackle and froth to fascinating effect.

“We often use what we call microscopic micing,” the band notes, “having very quiet sounds that we mic up and amplify to be very loud, thus playing with the usual dynamics and expectations of listeners in a creative way. We also use super-loud sounds and put them in the mix very softly.” Radian’s angular, expansive music delights in tension and contradiction, sound and silence, improvisation and composition. The trio employ a singular and wholly unique sense of microtonality. While their creation process is complex, the resulting music is emotionally affecting, creating an aura of suspense and at times unease. Brandlmayr, Siewert and Norman share an unconventional, wildly imaginative approach to sound.

In addition to Radian, Siewert has collaborated with Roisz and Kovacic in the group Efzeg and is known for his work with Mats Gustafsson in the trio (Fake the) Facts Brandlymayr is a frequent collaborator and has worked with artists such as John Tilbury, Fennesz, Chad Taylor, Otomo Yoshihide, eRikm, David Sylvian, and others. He also plays with Trapist and Polwechsel. Outside of his work with Radian, Norman plays guitar and sings with the shoegaze outfit Snoww Crystal

FLAT WORMS WITNESS MARKS

GOD#029 LP/CS/CD

Street Date: September 22, 2023

NO EXPORT TO THE U.K./E.U., AUSTRALIA/N.Z. — LEAVE WITNESS MARKS EVERYWHERE ELSE THAT MATTERS

Four years after they went all the way to Antarctica, Flat Worms are back in gen pop with the rest of us — but, as intoned on the album opener “Sigalert,” “back again like I never was.” Is this a nod to the way time passes over our sorely vexed synapses? Or are we to believe that there’s hope to be found in this broken world? Kick back with Witness Marks and see what other traces Flat Worms have left us in the dust.

The album title alone leaves a foreboding impression. But look closer “witness marks” aren’t something out of a forensic analysis — they’re actually practical; scratches placed in old clocks designed to aid continued maintenance further in time.

Sure, there’s big questions and more on the board; primarily if we’re at all distinct from the absurdity coming down around us, or just another character in the mirror? Flat Worms are looking inward this time, outlining personal space in relation to themselves and others sometimes even people they barely know. Among the slabs of slate-grey outrage, the flowers of compassion are blooming, and the simmering power of their trio grows exponentially.

Working once again with Ty Segall, Flat Worms continue to find new answers by digging into

themselves and playing their kind of rock: hard and flat, bass and drums thrusting stalwartly forward with conviction, guitar twisting and spinning in outrage, deadpan vocals decrying a dire set of circumstances.

The democracy of working together, so often messy and frustrating, was found to be a powerful release for Justin, Tim and Will. Acting as one, Flat Worms navigated challenging times by coming together, finding release in the clockwork repetitions of practice and the shared creative space they occupied together against the encroaching world.

In the short century of their existence, Flat Worms have agitated against the status quo with a disquieting lyric bent, to emphasize the psychosis of the times. These are positions taken within songs, sung out to individuals in the world. As evidenced by the lyrics,

“But I know I can always see you at the show Even though it’s only temporary and it’s time to go.”

.Witness Marks surveys an evolving sense of community. Flat Worms are dedicated to persevering and using the power of their collective. Come witness!

Recorded between San Francisco and London and brought together by the genius of Malcolm Catto at his analogue Quatermass Studio, the new recording represents another bold step in Ackamoor’s ever-evolving journey in jazz, adding full, intricate scores including string sections and choral elements to the Pyramids’ trademark spiritual Afro-jazz sound. Driven by the core Pyramids members Ackamoor (sax, keytar, organ), Margaux Simmons (flute), Sandra Poindexter (violin) and Bobby Cobb (guitar), tracks range from hard-hitting commentaries about police brutality (‘Police Dem’) to celebrations of the ancestors and departed loved ones (‘Requiem For The Ancestors’, ‘Re-Memory’) and hazy cosmic journeys, including the album’s title track and the sparkling, experimental closer, ‘Nice It Up’.

The recording is the Pyramids’ first new release since the acclaimed ‘Shaman!’ in 2020 and rides a wave of interest in the band around their 50th Anniversary this year. Alongside a box set reissue on Strut bringing together their rare early ‘70s albums for the first time, the band have headlined Le Guess Who festival in Utrecht with an accompanying exhibition of their history and have played major concerts at Presidio Theatre in L A and Zebulon in San Francisco. They will be playing a full European tour in Autumn 2023

“This album has been many years in the making,” explains Ackamoor. “Back in late 2020, I set out to compose the first in a series of scores to take The Pyramids sound into brave new territory All of the tracks involve issues that the core band is passionate about and the recording was a complex process involving many musicians and vocalists across two different time zones ”

SWEATSON KLANK A FREE MIND

What does it mean to be timeless in age of shallow immediacy? In a world where instant virality is hailed as the supreme goal, the most radical act of subversion might be creating something built to bang in a soundsystem eternity The latest from Sweatson Klank (FKA Take) achieves that rare posterity, inviting an all-night party of boogie funk, ‘80s modern soul, Japanese city pop, Balearic disco, AOR, and 90's house.

Don’t mistake this for derivative mash-up or second-rate synthesis Released on Friends of Friends, A Free Mind is a masterpiece from by a producer and multi-instrumentalist (keys, drum machine, live bass, guitar, percussion) who discovered a secret chamber where digital funk, contemporary soul, the Belleville Three and Mr. Fingers can all convene on the dancefloor The L A linchpin has alchemized original grooves made to hear on loop at an elegant Tokyo vinyl den, booming from your car speakers on a moon-lit freeway run, or at a bacchanalian house party It works as both pure aesthetics and function – all gorgeous chord progressions and graceful locomotion – yet it’s sophisticated and complex, informed by the history of the last four decades of music. This is a work aimed at discerning listeners alienated by the fast food music culture and empty hype that has become endemic

When Klank began A Free Mind over two years ago, he found himself considering what music was constantly replayed in his daily life. It wasn’t what was hot or what was trendy, but rather what captured a fleeting moment or emotion and rendered it timeless through song

After years of being regarded as a producer’s producer, Klank set out to make something mature but fun, nostalgic without being over-sentimental, deeply committed to the craft but never self-serious. These effortless-sounding anthems could only come from someone with a lifetime of vinyl crate-digging, studying, and digesting music from past, present, and beyond Joined by Steve Spacek, Illingsworth, Girls of the Internet and more, Klank divined a work that leaps across time and space, yet feels distinctly like a singular vision.

Tenderlonious You Know I Care

Saxophonist, composer, producer and 22a label boss

Tenderlonious enters fresh album territory with, 'You Know I Care' .

Having released several solo projects, numerous collaborations and a series of LP 's, EP's and singles with his band Ruby Rushton that centred on original compositions, he wanted to take a moment to focus his energy on exploring the classic jazz material that has inspired him over the years.

Label: 22A

Cat. no: 22A043

Format: LP

Barcode: 5052442023678

Players like Jackie McLean, Duke Pearson, Clifford Jordan and Wayne Shorter have all played significant roles in Tenderlonious' life and provide a constant source of inspiration for his development as a musician and composer. 'You Know I Care' is a tribute to those musicians and for this reason a landmark album - his first recording that purely delves into the American jazz songbook. Plus it's a way of encouraging a new generation of jazz listeners to explore some of the most significant contributors, and in some cases unsung heroes, to this everev olving genre.

This long player clearly follows in the footsteps of Tenderlonious' spiritual jazz hero's, paying particular attention to the original performers of these six masterpieces - Jackie McClean, Clifford Jordan, Wayne Shorter and Duke Pearson. This is also the first time that Tenderlonious has recorded on alto saxophone, a more recent love affair for this talented multi - instrumentalist, and hopefully the first of many.

There is something for everyone on this album, from brooding ballads to fullsteam ahead modal delights - and an opportunity to enjoy a fresh take on these timeless compositions.

Philadelphia-based alto saxophonist Bobby Zankel, acclaimed for his work with music legends, presents his newest album "A Change of Destiny" featuring his Wonderful Sound 8 ensemble This album, inspired by the discovery of slave quarters at George Washington's President's House in Philadelphia, is a powerful narrative intertwining high-energy compositions with introspective melodies.

The project shines with accomplished musicians like Jaleel Shaw, Robin Eubanks, and vocalist Ruth Naomi Floyd, among others. "A Change of Destiny," with its unique song titles expressing different aspects of the narrative, is a testament to Zankel's lifelong devotion to music as a grand idea, unconfined to a single style.

SESSIONS: Haliç

Digital: 28 Jun 2023

Frontman Ilhan Ersahin is one of those rare moguls of the New York City underground scene via his club and record label, Nublu, and he’s spread his New York energy throughout the world. It’s possible to see him jamming with The Red Hot Chili Peppers in Sao Paolo, or featuring Bugge Wesseltoft in Blue Note Tokyo or playing a beautiful oriental set with Turkish gypsies in an elegant concert hall somewhere in Europe. Since 2008 they have set fire to stages all across the world : from New York to Istanbul, from Paris to Sao Paolo, from London to Skopje.. Their electrifying, genre-crossing performance posed questions: Is this really jazz Doesn’t this sound like a rock band? Where does their sound come from? It’s master-level musicianship meeting high eclecticism where the cliché of “east-towest crossover” finds it’s true sense and power. A session is a meeting of a deliberative body to conduct its business. In this case, the business is music, and the music is another heavyweight offering from Ilhan and his crew. Above all, the Istanbul Sessions can aptly be described as cinematic.

Their debut (2009) had french trumpeter Erik Truffaz as guest. “Night Rider”, their second release (2012) reflected perfectly their genuine sound in-between dance music and free-form-jazz flavored by some ethnic spices. Their third (2015) “Istanbul Underground” was a perfect summary of night life of never-sleeping metropolis : Istanbul (it’ was also reviewed as their best studio production so far). Their forth studio album “Solar Plexus” (2017); having young genie Dave Harrington (the other half of “Darkside” with Nicolas Jaar) on coproducer seat, Ibrahim Maalouf, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, Nils-Petter Molvær, Mauro Refosco, Kenny Wollesen, Erik Truffaz and Brandon Lewis as special guests, took 21st century music into another eclectic direction where no border or atmosphere can limit the power of the creativity. Their 5th studio album "Bir Zamanlar Şimdi" produced by Grammy awarded Italian producer Tommaso Colliva has been out in 2021 under the shadow of Covid19 pandemic but received great feedback from their fanbase.

In 2023 Istanbul Sessions plans to go back on the road with new music and new ideas. First three singles,, Haliç, Tünel and Odakule are planned to be out this spring, pointing to the full length expected fall 2023.

OVERVIEW

Norway’s most far-out and unique prog band TUSMØRKE is back! This album is not for the faint of heart. Like some great Babylonian harlot, the sinfully sweet sounds held within this record will deny no one, but they extract a great price! There will be no turning back should you proceed on this wretched path and cut your way through the thickets so green, for the path is fraught with danger and temptation. Proceed and you might find yourself sucked off, as it were, to a strange fairyland where every bush and clearing is gushingly alive with the brazen bacchanals of satyrs and nymphs. Continue and you will find yourself in a world where chance encounters of mildew-encrusted adult magazines, carefully stashed away in the shrubs are nothing short of erotic mysteries reminiscent of ancient fertility cults.

Life is never just sunshine and rainbows, and the same is true with Tusmørke, whose name means twilight in Norwegian. Like its namesake flower, the coltsfoot, Hestehoven swells forth from the underworld, and this chthonic aspect is heavily present in the conceptual undertones as well..

Tusmørke may conceivably be heathens, but certainly not unenlightened ones. This is music to hum along with as you pass a devil’s pact through the keyhole of your local church, or rock out to as you ride backwards on a dog all the way to the witches’ sabbath. Where warlocks cackle and witches blush. Where the priest, knowing-more-than-his-Lord’s-Prayer, binds Old Eric to his bidding. This is true Norwegian finger-clicking, butt-swinging prog rock. No more, no less – but cerebral in excess! Spring has sprung! If it is all too much to bear, close your eyes and think about the flowers. Hail Pan

The Laughing Chimes have, over the course of one album and several singles, breathed new life into classic jangle and paisley pop. Formed by teenage brothers Evan and Quinn Seurkamp, they bring a fresh, youthful enthusiasm and the unique outlook of their eastern Ohio rust belt upbringing to sounds that would fit right in on labels like Flying Nun, Creation and Sarah

Gathering up 3 future-classic tunes from their 2021 debut album and two subsequent singles onto one 7", "Laurel Heights" is a brilliant distillation of The Laughing Chimes' considerable charm and a super vinyl introduction to the band. The song "Laurel Heights" sounds like a tune by the best Athens, GA band you never heard of, a brilliant slice of pastoral jangle destined for a thousand mixtapes. "Zoo Avenue" is an achingly melodic pop nugget taken from a tape EP of the same name, and "Try To Change My Mind" was one of the stand-outs of their aforementioned debut LP. The songs are strong, assured and enlivened by an infectious immediacy that allows The Laughing Chimes to claim this familiar sound as their own. They're at once timeless and bang upto-date, and we're very happy to offer this rousing time capsule while the band works on what will surely be a terrific second album.

Portrait De L’Artiste

RELEASE DATE: September 22, 2023

Straight away, Portrait De L’Artiste, the second album from Gatineau’s cheekily-named Album, feels far murkier and slipperier than their self-titled debut. Where Album, issued on Telephone Explosion in 2021, audibly extended the sonic universe estab lished by co-founder Olivier Fairfield in his previous outfit FET.NAT (taut, sliced-up beat collages and smeared samples) their forthcoming successor forges a completely distinct, albeit enigmatic, identity.

Fairfield (also known for his work in Last Ex, Timber Timbre, and H. De Heutz) and his co-conspirator Simone Provencher (of VICTIME infamy) are well aware of how elusiveness can be wielded persuasively. Together they leverage the allure of this music’ss cryptic surface to draw listeners into a verdant landscape of meticulously psychedelic detail.

Since their inception, Album has always drawn upon a wide and peculiar array of influences, making their inimitable sound a difficult one to describe. On Portrait de l’artiste they intentionally embrace aspects of jazz, but contrary to expectation, this only makes their unclassifiable essence more apparent.

Peter Brewis Blowdry Colossus

STREET DATE: 22 September 2023

LABEL: Daylight Saving Records

On 22nd September, Daylight Saving Records will release Blowdry Colossus, the new solo album by Field Music’s Peter Brewis. The record is Peter’s first solo venture since 2008’s The Week That Was and follows collaborative albums with Paul Smith (on 2014’s Frozen By Sight) and Sarah Hayes (on 2019’s You Tell Me). The album was recorded over the last year at the Field Music studio in Sunderland, and features contributions from Peter’s brother David, Sarah Hayes and Peter’s son Alexander.

Peter’s work with Field Music, and across all the parallel projects he’s undertaken, has always been characterised by curiosity; an urge to find new musical and lyrical avenues to explore, to mine under-appreciated influences, to combine disparate musical strands. Blowdry Colossus makes this tendency more explicit than ever.

“I wanted to make something where the music was the focus.” says Peter, “With songs, the lyrics tend to carry the meaning: ‘This song is about...'. I wanted the music to be the meaning - the melodies, harmonies, sounds, structures.”

The mostly-instrumental album takes cues from the knowing exotica of Yellow Magic Orchestra, the quizzical tunefulness of Thelonious Monk and the pastoral abstractions of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It also has more than a touch of the hyperactive fizz of 8-bit game soundtracks. And like Kraftwerk’s records of the mid and late-70s, this is synthesizer music as art music rather than dance music. But where Kraftwerk took the melodic purity of Schubert and gave it a chilly formality, on Blowdry Colossus, Peter takes the same elevation of melody and plunges it into a kind of playful chaos, heavy with rhythmic ingenuity.

The record is also heavy with sonic mutation. A piano is fed through a ring-modulator until it resembles a flute. A flute combines with an old casio and becomes a ghostly, tuneful breath. Synth drum loops morph into arpeggios of bubbles, or are remade as overdriven hiccups. And, of course, there’s the eponymous hero of the title track: a hairdryer fugue gradually giv ing way to a squelching, off-balance take on Zeppelin-esque riff rock.

The only lyrics on the album appear on Dog Bark Dark, a surreal wilddog chase. “I thought I’d have one actual song on here, for something different!” says Peter, “I was thinking of YMO, Quincy Jones, early 90s dance and Captain Beefheart. And the guitar solo was meant to be the discarded bits from Steve Miller’s Abracadabra.”

Throughout the album, it feels like we’ve been diligently following the steps of the KLF’s seminal Manual, but once we were sitting in the studio, drinking tea and tinkering with the sequencer, we decided to give up on having a number one hit and keep playing purely for the joy. Hence, the foray into New Jack Swing on Generation Dial Up or the Eno-esque interlude of Warm Wind.

dreamTX – Living In Memory Of Something Sweet

dreamTX is a post-post rock project by Nick Das, a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Dallas. 'living in memory of something sweet' marks his debut album under the alias, though Das has quietly been recording and performing across the US since 2016, playing electronics/guitar in shoegaze group Kraus, co-writing with Maggie Rogers, and making early albums that bear the bent -toothed twang of Modest Mouse, a striving formalism and regard for words, for poetry, a wooly, handmade charm, a Smog-iness. In 2019 he made a break away, towards the spiritual grounds of the first great awakening, to Woodstock. Life became swirls of density: Hudson School hues, sanded brown, pine green, bugs and heat, intensity, exercise, and working himself up mountains. Real freedom, aloneness, and happy, and maybe deranged by the sun. dreamTX recorded most of living in these new surroundings, and devised a unique way of thinking about songs, mapping their structures according to the linearity of an out-and-back trail system wherein you traverse new ground, sounds, and melodies for half the song, and then retrace those same parts in reverse, but through a retinkered, degraded lens, where there’s recognizable elements from before (a musical phrase, a chord), but re-contextualized in new spaces (magnified or pushed into the distance, crunched, mangled, or echoing and smeared together... ) to create a progressive arrangem ent out of the same materials, like japanese boro patchwork. “What happens to a song when you rewrite it one hundred times over again? I wanted to make whole songs that feel like they contain all of me – the quiet, erratic, raw, inward, obscure, and bristling power that passes through me. I wanted to notice these changes, and document them. Some artists think their best songs are written in 15 minutes, but for me, I'm not so sure.”

Morton Valence – Morton Valence

Cow Pie Records LP

COWSEVENLP 0754590985604

“They drift with phantom ease from spare, intimate, literate alt -country to a nuanced, weighted music bearing the marks of rock'n'roll history..." Classic Rock 8/10 // ”...slow burning, emotional intensity" Mojo **** // ”Alluring and seductive." Uncut **** //

Morton Valence’s eighth, and eponymously titled album, comes to you, courtesy of Cow Pie Recordings, featuring 11 new songs, produced by the legendary BJ Cole. Robert ‘Hacker’ Jessett and Anne Gilpin, who form the nucleus of Morton Valence, effortlessly take the country music genre, which is generally considered a uniquely American musical form, and create something uniquely English, without ever compromising their authenticity. The atmosphere that BJ Cole brings to the album is palpable, in both product ion values, and his unmistakable pedal steel guitar performances, on songs such as the plaintive ‘Together Through the Rain’, where an estranged Anne and Hacker reunite under the shelter of an umbrella, walking through the rain and trading verses along the way. Or the more upbeat country rock of ‘I’ve Been Watching You/You’ve Been Watching Me’, which is almost as if Richard and Linda Thompson had touched down in some Nashville backbar before heading for the bright lights. And of course, the scintillatingly down-beat opener, and instant urban-country classic; ‘Summertime in London’, where Hacker reflects on his home city from afar, through simultaneously tear -stained and rose-tinted glasses.

What gives the album its country hallmark, are the narratives in the songs. However, they forego the typical Americana for an altogether more kitchen -sink aesthetic. We see the return of MV alter egos Bob and Veronica in ‘Bob and Veronica’s Big Move’, as they make their way from the big city to what could only be the arcad ian bluecollar tranquillity of Hastings, or Skegness perhaps? There’s the bewildered small -town homecoming of a wannabe prodigal son in ‘A Town Called Home’. And a conversation with ‘Jim’, a seemingly old -school kind of bloke, with a penchant for midday d rinking and late-night city shenanigans. As well as BJ Cole’s steel guitar, there are other collaborations too. ‘Like a Face that’s Been Starved of a Kiss’, co -written with Band of Holy Joy front man, and lyrical visionary Johny Brown. Flamenco guitar geni us, Amir John Haddad, sits in on the urbancowboy ballad, ‘Me & My Old Guitar’, the skewed violin of Dylan Bates brings something of the vaudeville to songs such as ‘It Isn’t Easy Being an Angel’, Guy Jackson adds his sublime keyboards throughout, and the whole thing is held together by unsung rhythm section heroes Jamie Shaw on drums and Josh De Mita on bass.

As with all Morton Valence albums, along with the shade, there is always some light, in particular the escapist cosmic romp of ‘It’s a Brand-New Morning’, or the wryly observant, ‘It Isn’t Easy Being an Angel’, where the protagonist discovers that he’s living in some weird kind of purgatory where even the late Johnny Thunders has quit smoking. This is an ambitious album, formed through a unique symbios is of musical characters, which is ready to redefine UK country music, put ‘urban country’ centre -stage, and should be heard by everyone.

Re-issue of Cate Le Bon’s April 2016 album originally released on Drag City which she described as "A coalition of inescapable feelings and fabricated nonsense." A few years prior to its release, Cate’s mother unearthed her birth certificate, and admitted to her daughter that they'd had her birthday a day off for nearly three decades. That sense of misaligned reality is the guiding force on Crab Day, where Cate establishes a strange, almost Dadaist lyrical scheme to make sense or make more nonsense of some unnamed life rupture that's left her grasping
