This Issue: Tommy Robinson, Vice President of Sales at New West Records

How did you personally get started in the music industry? I moved to Austin, TX on a whim in late 2006 to work with KLRU / Austin City Limits. I worked as an assistant to the producers of the show and helped with all the grunt work associated with putting the performances together. When and where did the label begin? New West began in 1998. It started in Minneapolis and then moved to Los Angeles and Austin, TX. Multiple folks working in multiple cities to put out the first releases. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? I am not sure about this one. No one seems to know. I am guessing it has something to do with the label being started in LA and that it was a new style of country and western music. I am really not sure though. How has the label changed since it started? It has evolved into a full service record label for artists and bands of multiple genres. New West began as an Americana / Alt Country label but has evolved to include Rock, Dance, Punk, Metal, Soul, Funk, Blues etc… Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We have 15 people working at New West. We have 10 people in Nashville and 5 folks in Athens, GA working directly for New West. We have more employees working for the sub labels as well. We are an all in-house label. We have a production department, PR department, Radio Department, Marketing Department, A digital team and a sales team along with our A&R folks. We have people devoted to our publishing wing as well. A lot of us wear multiple hats which is just part of getting the job done and hopefully it helps us all learn about better ways to work within the music business. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Communication. While we were all at home during the pandemic we learned how to work together even while working from home. But naturally, you lose water cooler camaraderie and ideas tend to evolve at a slower pace. Now that we are back in the office I feel like we are marketing and promoting our records with more creativity based on conversations that evolve in real time between all employees. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Not really. We started in LA and Austin and eventually moved to Athens, GA and Nashville, TN. Being in the South seems to represent the country genre a bit more than other places but as I mentioned above, we represent all sorts of genres so I don’t think where we are influences a ton of what we do. We’ve just usually been connected to a thriving local scene and that certainly helps us when promoting and marketing music. Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? Personally, I like to shop in record stores in order to find new music. I find so many bands just by getting staff recommendations, hearing music overhead, looking at marketing stickers. I also get a lot of new music recommendations from Spotify and Discover Weekly. The music may not always be new but sometimes it’s new to me. I also search for new music via labels and their newsletters/socials. I am a big fan of everything that International Anthem (a fellow Redeye label) releases so I pretty much listen to and/or buy anything that they are releasing. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? I would say the Americana / Singer-Songwriter genre is our bread and butter but we have a very diverse roster spread across over 500+ releases. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? I can’t really speak to what the ambitions were when the label was started but I do know that this label was founded upon the idea that there are a lot of great independent artists out there and their music was and is something to be heard and celebrated. I feel like that is still the goal today. We want to promote independent artists and their music with integrity so that we can help their careers flourish while allowing our staff and the artists and their team to live productive and healthy lives. We work in music. It’s fun and creative and it’s a massive pleasure to be able to have our hand in expanding or developing an artist’s vision and art. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Me, personally, I love the Benji Hughes - A Love Extreme record. Top to bottom it’s just

a perfect record. It’s a double album with 20+ songs but so many of them are just earworms and classics that are still a pleasure to listen to every time they come on. I also thoroughly enjoyed working on The Glands and Pylon reissue campaigns. The teams, artists and marketing ideas came together very nicely. Those projects were a complete pleasure. I love the music too. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Haha, I don’t know if it’s very “wild” but we released Caroline Rose’s Superstar record back in 2020. In 2019 as we were leading up to the release we purchased a billboard in Vega, TX and it confused the entire town quite a bit. Just a photo of Caroline with the weird mask she is wearing on the cover. We did it as a joke to tell Caroline we bought a billboard in Vegas but instead we messed up and bought it in Vega. All intentional. She was awesome to work with and totally played it up. We might have to do it again since she has so many fans in Vega, TX now. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? I don’t mind it at all. I know people love it and our customers seem to dig it. I know a lot of people don’t love it and say it affects the sound quality. Go buy a CD then. Those sound the best. We did a few variants for the Texas Gentlemen - Floor It record. The inner panels of the gatefold were a “candyland-esque” board game that involved some imbibing of substances. We tried to mimic the colors of the game and did a lot of cool pressings. We did one pressing that was 3-4 colors blocked on each side of the record. It looked like Simon, the old 80s hand-held game. That was a fun campaign. Those dudes are awesome and have such a creative vision. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We never stopped or slowed down on CDs. We still sell a lot of CDs so we keep them in stock for every release and we sell them. Now, with the vinyl boom we have had to get creative and get more copies signed or even do indie-only CDs that have extra tracks and are exclusive to indie retailers. Cassettes, we’ve done a few and we have a few more on the horizon. We don’t sell a lot of cassettes. They seem to be more of a novelty item than anything else…for us at least. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Hmmm, it really depends on the release but I would say most of our fans are male, between 30-60 years of age and they mostly like Americana/Country music. That being said, I don’t wanna pigeon hold those fans. I think they like music in general and with us, it likely starts from being a fan of one of our heritage artists. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Pre-orders. I don’t remember the Pre-order being such a thing and now they are a massive part of selling a record and how many sales you actually get. That and streaming. It’s been amazing to see how people have adapted to listening to everything on their phone or computer and building a digital library and really actively discovering music. Streaming has become such a discovery tool for the average fan who may or may not have time to really seek out new music. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? SNTRK. It would be all instrumental music. Psych, jazz, guitar, beats etc…anything that could be a good soundtrack/score to a movie or performance. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: I have a few favorite stores here in Nashville. I love working with them and they are always super kind to me. They order records for me, hold them for me and help me find new music (mentioned above). They know who they are. But if I am shouting out places that I could get lost in…Academy Records in Brooklyn and Double Decker in PA come to mind. Human Head in NYC is also great. I love record stores stacked with hard to find titles as well as obscure tastes and genres. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? I would like New West to be remembered as a label that cared and put out great music while at the same time advancing artist and employee careers. A real music company devoted to promoting art with integrity.

Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn collaborated on record in 2015 for their contributions to Three Lobed Recording’s Parallelogram series. That previously ornate and limited title is now released in a non-limited format standing along and outside of that prior collection. The two artists, originally connected by mutual friends and geographic proximity, have long pushed the other’s continued artistic development. Despite sharing many live stages over the years, this collaborative album represents the first time that the two have worked together in the studio. Vile’s side sees him recast tracks by John Prine (“Way Back When”) and Randy Newman (“Pretty Boys,” featuring some truly *electric* guitar flourishes from Gunn) as if they were KV originals. The theme of reinvention continues with Vile tearing through a solo banjo rendition of his “Red Apples” (originally from his God Is Saying This To You… LP), retitled here as “Red Apples For Tom Scharpling.” Gunn takes on a late period Nico track, “60/40,” and pulls a lysergic rocker out of the track’s goth-ish roots. The bulk of Gunn’s contribution is the epically winding “Spring Garden,” a track in the vein of some of his other long-form guitar excursions. Featuring signature contributions from Vile and Mary Lattimore, this hypnotizing cut is unmistakably a classic in Gunn’s catalog.

Originally released in 1971, Raga: A Film Journey Into the Soul of India documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s, following him on his return to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multiinstrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan. It further explores Shankar’s life as a musician and teacher in the United States and Europe, initiating those in the West to the exceptional world that is Indian classical music and culture. Through rare and candid footage shot in both India and the United States, Raga sheds light on Shankar’s influences and collaborations, from Allauddin Khan to his famed dancer brother Uday Shankar, to his associations with Western musicians Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison. Fully narrated by Shankar himself, Raga reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar’s life. The 2010 DVD release of Raga features a digitally re-mastered 35mm print optimized to modern color range resolution and standard and a fully re-mastered audio soundtrack.

Themes of outer space and the future have occupied a central presence in electronic music since its earliest days, and Stellar Drifting taps into the preoccupations of some of FitzGerald’s most treasured influences, from Daft Punk to Neu!, Carl Craig to Wookie, Air to Boards of Canada. The term ‘stellar drift’ refers to the movement of stars – far from being static and eternal, space is constantly in motion, and celestial bodies are changing over time. The album title hints at an otherworldly serenity that might be found within this continual flux.

Stellar Drifting’s visual language was created with the celebrated designer David Rudnick, who worked alongside web developer Chris Shier to reinterpret trivision billboards of the past into images of the future. His artwork covers the album and accompanying visualisers, and will be incorporated into an aesthetic component of live shows this summer.

The Homeless Gospel Choir started in (2009) as the solo project of Derek Zanetti. He released three albums before the addition of Matt Miller (Endless Mike and the Beagle Club, Wingnut Dishwashers Union) and Megan Schroer (Boys, Kitty Cat fan club) for 2020's This Land is Your Landfill. They were joined by Maura Weaver (Mixtapes, Ogikubo Station) and Craig Luckman (Belly Boys, small pollen) for their first full band tours in 2019. Now a permanent lineup, The Homeless Gospel Choir's Fourth Dimension Intervention is the first album featuring all five members. Fourth Dimension Intervention, by The Homeless Gospel Choir, was recorded over five days in August 2021 at The Lodge KY by John Hoffman. It's the first album to feature all five members of the band, the first self produced album, and the first full length to be released by Don Giovanni.

One of the most well-known disco and burger highlife artists of the time, Charles Amoah originally began his career as a drummer. Playing with Alex Kunadu’s band, as well as the Precious Jewels and even Nana Tuffour, he then moved to Germany in the early 80s. His first album Sweet Vibration spawned several hits which went on to be released as separate singles, namely “Scratch My Back” and “Shake Your Body To The Beat”. When Ryan DeRobertis announced the name change of his project from Saint Pepsi to Skylar Spence, there was no indication of any stylistic departure, though the change arrived with a musical shift toward faster tempos and more pristine production. Whereas Saint Pepsi had often used decades-old boogie, disco, and new wave as grist for the sampling mill, Skylar Spence is intent on trafficking more overtly in those genre aesthetics through his own production techniques and vocal contributions. With Prom King, DeRobertis reorients his music for his new full-band live act and winds up with an album full of tight dance tunes.

Working with Carpark Records “gave me the confidence to ‘go big’ with the new material: to write pop songs with universal messages in the sonic wrapping paper that I’ve grown accustomed to,” DeRobertis says. “A few songs on Prom King are about specific events in my life -- a party where I got too messed up, watching a friend’s life spiral out of control and trying to help -- but I tried hard not to be too autobiographical because I want my music to unite, above all else. I’m much more interested in connecting with the listener than mystifying my personality.”

While DeRobertis’ previous LPs have been more amorphous collections in the style of beat tapes, Prom King is compact and cohesive, with the album’s varied stylistic references (new wave, UK garage, boogie) united through strong guitar melodies and Todd Edwards-ian cobblings-together of tiny vocal samples. “I slowed some music down and called myself an artist,” DeRobertis sings on lead single “Can’t You See,” acknowledging in his lyrics what is already apparent in the music’s tone—he can maintain fidelity to his vision while working in more uptempo, discobased song structures. “Ridiculous!” and “Bounce Is Back” are big groovers that capitalize on jacking hi-hats and hand drumming, respectively, and both have an air of Balearic warmth and smoothness. On the title track, DeRobertis entwines a chorus of unintelligible but expressive samples with his own vocals -- what feels like a synthesis of two approaches—and the result is an affecting pattern of build and release. More contemplative sophisti-pop numbers like “Fall Harder” and “Affairs” add a realist’s breadth of scope: thoughts of past foibles bleed into presentdwelling and dancing. Prom King is DeRobertis making sense of missed opportunities. His high school did not have a prom king; he has filled the position with an imaginative album of personal and musical revisionism.

Drawing a through line between the British post-punk of The Fall and the new wave of insolent hardcore typified by bands like Lumpy & The Dumpers, The Nits have developed a knack for writing unhinged punk earworms. But it’s Sister Sniffany, and her singular lyrical and performance style, who elevates the band beyond the sum of their influences. Her lyrics inhabit the same world as her ‘macabre, visceral’ (It’s Nice That’) cartoons- a world of hidden humiliations, girl abjection, crumpled lager cans, clam chowder and lumpy, over-stuffed dollies. Over the course of The Unscratchable Itch, Sniffany ventriloquises a cast of pathetic, unbalanced characters: A secretarial administer tails her Casanova husband to a suburban swingers party: "I can smell him from here: a mix of vaseline, foot cream and Stella beer". A poor old grandmother's glasses fog up as she chastises her granddaughter: "You self-entitled selfish little twat! / Left me to die in a popcorn-walled flat! / Spotty little smelly little prick! / Making your poor grandmother sick!" But these characters aren’t detached, impersonal creations. As Sniffany explains: “In Sniffany & The Nits I like to exorcise and exhibit the deeply shameful parts of myself that I see as the toxic aspects of my own femininity.” These are confessional songs about love addiction, jealousy, possession, self-loathing and “egg smashing-fury”. Though occasionally they are literally just about Sex & The City, red-pilled incels or grandmothers. O Williams (Drums), Max ‘Wozza’ Warren (Bass) and Matt Green (Guitar) have been entrenched in the UK DIY scene for years, having played in the aforementioned bands, as well as countless others. Warren also runs the influential left-field label Gob Nation- a home for ‘egg punks’ across the country. As such, the band veer between atonal nowave guitar assault, straight-up hardcore, goth/anarcho or whatever takes their fancy, while remaining identifiably Nit-like. Always grounded by a pounding, pogo-ing rhythm section, The Nits provide the perfect backdrop for Sister Sniffany’s wild, relentless live performances. Cheap Things is the latest record by New Haven guitarist and C/Site label-owner, Stefan Christensen. In many regards, Cheap Things represents an apex of the universe Christensen has fostered over the last decade, both collaborative and highly personal. Indeed, many of the key names from the C/Site and adjacent world contribute to the record in some capacity - David Shapiro (Alexander/Center/Headroom), Kyrssi Battalene (Mountain Movers/Headroom), who takes a lead and has repurposed the final track for Headroom, Ian McColm (Heart Of The Ghost) and Rick Omonte (Mountain Movers/Headroom) sit in on drums and bass, respectively, while John Miller (formally of Mountain Movers) recorded a couple of the songs at his home studio. Cheap Things is a record labeled with Christensen's name, but it's certainly also one born of community and like-minded creative enquiry, longtime characteristics in his increasingly dense catalogue. Recording itself is an integral aspect of the way in which Christensen creates his sound, relying on the freedom of home studios, the analog limitations of four and eight tracks, and the unique results gained from tape loop manipulations.. Much like the music of Tomokawa Kazuki, Mikami Kan and Neil Young, who have informed the album in various ways, the intent here seems to be to communicate big ideas with modest means. Cheap Things, then, is unusually titled, if not expressing the infinite and the eternal, at least suggesting that in striving for the bigger ideas we might find truth, or perhaps just some piece there of. 1. Charles Stepney Step on Step International Anthem proudly presents Step on Step, a double LP collection of newly unearthed solo home recordings created by enigmatic producer, arranger, and composer Charles Stepney in the basement of his home on the Southside of Chicago during the years before his untimely death in 1976. Stepney’s signature “baroque soul” sound is known to many as it’s heard in his prismatic orchestral arrangements for Rotary Connection, Minnie Riperton, Howlin Wolf, Terry Callier, Earth, Wind & Fire, and many more. His sound has been used by countless samplers in the hip-hop world including Kanye West, The Fugees, and MF Doom. But in comparison to the post-mortem renown of his sound, or the artists he supported while he was alive, Stepney is a greatly underappreciated figure… a genius relegated to the shadows. Step on Step is Stepney’s eponymous debut album, featuring 23 bare-bones, demo-style home recordings, most of which are Stepney originals that were never again recorded by him or any other artist. Highlights from those original works include “Denim Groove,” which hears Stepney on piano and congas alongside his first instrument (the vibraphone), and “Look B4U Leap,” one of several kinetic lo-fi dance numbers that feature Stepney having fun with an early-gen Moog synthesizer. It also features prototypical, seedling-style demos of Stepney compositions for Earth, Wind & Fire, including “That’s The Way of The World,” “Imagination,” and “On Your Face,” as well as the original version of “Black Gold,” which would eventually be recorded by Rotary Connection (as “I Am The Black Gold of The Sun”).

When Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye make music as Jockstrap, the process and result has one definition: pure modern pop alchemy. Jesse Ed Davis) was the “go-to” sideman for a remarkable group of musicians. Starting in the mid-‘Sixties, he toured with Conway Twitty, then become a key part of Taj Mahal’s band, playing on several albums and tours including an appearance on The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. And let’s not forget he paired up with Leon Russell to play on Bob Dylan’s single “Watching the River Flow” – followed by accompanying George Harrison during the Concert For Bangla Desh. By now, he’d caught the eyes and ears of ATCO Records, who released his debut LP Jesse Davis in 1971 featuring Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Gram Parsons, Merry Clayton, Ben Sidran, John Simon (producer of The Band), Alan White (of Yes), and many others including Delaney Bramlett behind the mixing desk. Little Beaver (so dubbed as a child because of his prominent front teeth) was one of the extraordinarily talented musicians Henry Stone assembled at his Hialeah, FL-based T.K. Records label and its assorted imprints. Among the artists who recorded for Stone were K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Timmy Thomas, Gwen McCrae, Betty Wright, and Benny Latimore…and backing them on a lot of those records was Hale, laying down mellow ‘n’ funky, jazz-influenced licks on his hollow-body Gibson. Hale’s talent was so distinctive that when Stone finally let Hale step out of the studio shadows to record his own album on the Cat imprint, the effects were immediate and long-lasting. Featuring contributions from Thomas, Wright, Latimore, and Jaco Pastorius (under the name Nelson “Jocko” Padron), 1974’s Party Down scored a #2 hit with its title track and has been repeatedly sampled by latter-day rap artists ranging from People Under the Stairs to Jay Z. himself (the “Party Life” track on his American Gangster album). A great, 10-minute rendition of “Let It Grow” from Norman kicks the whole thing off, followed by a 17-minute “Sugaree” from Baton Rouge…and how about that epic, 13-minute version of “Black Peter,” also hailing from the Baton Rouge show (which contributes the lion’s share of the songs here). And for you obsessive Dead Head collectors, the Houston excerpt also captures the last time the “Help on the Way”/”Slipknot!”/”Franklin’s Tower” medley was played for six years. Dick’s Picks Vol. 2— Columbus, Ohio 10/31/71 STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 9, 2022 The Grateful Dead’s Halloween 1971 performance is almost enough to make one believe in spirits. For that night— captured on this, the only single CD release in the entire Dick’s Picks series— the group played the most ethereal, dreamy, and, yes, spooky version of “Dark Star” ever recorded; it’s almost as if Jerry Garcia was communing with his ancestors (and maybe John Coltrane) for the first seven minutes of his beautifully structured, contemplative and yearning solo. Then, after the vocal verse, Garcia, rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, and bassist Phil Lesh take turns suggesting a new improvisational theme before the band telepathically picks up on a two-note theme and Garcia launches into some of the most ecstatic guitar playing ever captured on tape anywhere (labeled by some the “Tighten Up” jam after the Archie Bell & the Drells song; others hear an embryonic “Eyes of the World”). The rest of the disc is more than fine, with a spirited “Sugar Magnolia,” a rare, early-‘70s performance of “St. Stephen” (the final live version until 1976) and a great “Not Fade Away”/”Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad” closer rounding out the 59-minute program. But really, the “Dark Star” is worth the price of this single CD release alone. Out of print for years!

Dick’s Picks Vol. 11— Stanley Theatre, Jersey City, NJ 9/27/72 (3-CD Set) STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 9, 2022 Dick’s Picks Vol. 11 was not only the first concert from 1972 to be released in the series, but also was the first full concert from that hallowed year ever to be released by the Dead. At the time, it sparked some controversy—it seemed like (and still does!) every Deadhead had his or her favorite 1972 show—but as usual, compiler Dick Latvala came through with an (American) beauty, highlighted by one of the greatest “Dark Star” versions ever recorded, with a bonus of a one-time-only segue into “Cumberland Blues.” This volume also delivers an interesting set list marked by quite a bit of material from the debut solo albums by Jerry Garcia (Garcia) and Bob Weir (Ace), both of which had come out earlier that year. We’ve seen quite a few folks claim this album actually tops Europe ’72, but maybe a better way to put it is to say it complements it, with a bunch of new material added to the repertoire and a new, post-Pigpen line-up playing at a very high level on this side of the pond. Out of print for years!

This is one of the more unusual volumes in the entire Dick’s Picks series, both with respect to band configuration—neither Mickey Hart nor Donna Godchaux (who was off tour having a baby) are here— and the circumstances of the recording, as the first disc begins with a version of “Morning Dew” that had to serve as both a show opener and a sound check because the band was three hours late arriving for the gig! Interestingly, the last disc ends with an encore of “Morning Dew” (in a particularly spectacular version) too, and one imagines archivist Dick Latvala chuckling over that symmetry as he put together this 4-CD set, which compiles highlights from two nights of a three-night stand at Boston Music Hall. Lovers of Keith Godchaux’s keyboard work will find much to savor, as he is higher in the mix here than on probably any other Pick, and the “Mind Left Body Jam” on Disc Four coming out of “Playing in the Band” is stellar. And how often do you hear (on Disc One) a FIRST set that begins with “Morning Dew” and ends with “Playing in the Band?!” All with a uniquely mellow vibe throughout…this is the Dead easing away from the jazzy 1973 sound towards the next step in their ceaseless evolution (the Wall of Sound is four short months away). Another keeper.

We can’t know what it’s like to write songs beloved by John Prine, David Olney, Todd Snider, John Hiatt, Will Kimbrough, Jimmy Buffett, and Jason Ringenberg. We don’t share Tommy’s brilliance and we can’t conjure his bizarro humor. We don’t write the saddest funny songs anyone has ever heard, or the funniest sad songs on the planet. What makes him unique is what makes him communal. Just like us, he’s a twit and a triumph. He proclaims his inherent and inerrant immortality in “Cockroach After the Bomb” but, in a half-smiling spit, says, “You can’t kill me, I’m already dead.” He accedes to his limitations in “I’m Never Gonna Be a Rock Star” in envy and grudging acceptance, before offering a chin-to-chest admission, “There, I said it.” But then he asks, as all of us do and most of us maybe shouldn’t, “Where’s my catharsis?” Give a dog a bone, for Chrissake. Look up “twit,” and you’ll confirm that it means “a silly or foolish person.” And he is. And we are. Tommy is here to tell us that. But, on Antonym Day, “twit” means a prescient or brilliant person. Space Summit is a collaboration between the omnipresent Marty WillsonPiper (ex-the church) and Minneapolitan Jed Bonniwell. Writing the music together, Marty handles the luminescent electric guitars and the bass whilst Jed is in charge of lead vocal duties, and lyrics. The music created on Space Summit’s debut album is simultaneously modern and classic dream pop – the subtle shading of dark and light with layered, sonic textures on every track. Conceived in cyberspace, the album is produced by Marty and producer/ engineer Dare Mason who also plays keyboards. Phoebe Tsen sings harmony vocals, Olivia Willson-Piper plays the strings, Eddie John plays the d,rums

and Anekdoten's Nicklas Barker and Sophie Linder play Mellotron. All the usual suspects from Marty’s recent Noctorum and MOAT projects make an appearance. Bringing together musicians from England, the USA, Sweden, and even Borneo where Phoebe lives, is recognition of a new future in music. Sarah Davachi - Two Sisters The new album from Sarah Davachi on her own Late Music imprint is a collection of nine extended compositions for chamber ensemble and solo pipe organ. The expanded instrumentation on this album includes carillon (a keyboard instrument comprised of very large cast-iron bells), choir, string quartet, low woodwinds, and trombone quartet, alongside sine tones and electronic drones. Among the pipe organs featured on the album is an extremely rare Italian tracker organ from 1742, housed now in the Southwest desert region of the United States. Davachi is accompanied in these recordings by a formidable group of musicians and interpreters, including the Apartment House ensemble. The carillon that sounds on the piece ‘Hall of Mirrors’ is the third largest in the world, with its heaviest bell weighing approximately twelve Imperial tons. Conceptually, there is a loose thread that runs through the compositional methods of Two Sisters, influenced by the allegory of ‘temperance’ in a minimalist aesthetic sense: “one foot on land, one foot in the water”, as it were, caught in the perpetual balance of restraint as delight and necessity. There are mirrored sonic and structural images throughout the album, also reflected in the iconography of the cover: the satyr and the subject, the shared gaze between head and body, the dialogue between cerebral and physical response, as above so below. With You Are the Flower, her first solo album, vocalist Daisy Press finds her voice in communion with the sainted and celebrated 12th century composer, Hildegard von Bingen. Daisy’s deeply personal approach, both irreverent and devotional, breathes new vibrant life into the world and work of the medieval visionary. Press first encountered Hildegard in a graduate school program at Oxford under the tutelage of the rockstar theologian nun Sister Benedicta Ward. Years later, in the midst of her career as a a go-to, indemand, classically-trained singer, spanning the diverse musical worlds of nightlife, classical new music, and experimental pop, searching for something she could call her own, Daisy rekindled her relationship with the 12th century mystic. Hildegard’s words and music spoke to her of a reclaimed power, of taking up space and demanding autonomy. Even more so, of the ecstasy of the body. Of the six chants on the You Are the Flower, three celebrate the martyred St. Ursula and three celebrate the Virgin Mary; they all speak about a devotion to the feminine. The first chant on the album, “Favus Distillans,” proclaims Ursula as longing to “embrace the Lamb of God with honey and milk under her tongue,” the imagery at once chaste and sensual. Fittingly, the album ends with “Ave Maria O Auctrix Vitae,” a full-on psychedelic ride (and epic homage to the Virgin Mary). Hildegard was 42 was when she started having visions and started writing. So when Daisy approached the same time in her life, Hildegard resonated. Thus inspired, Press has put her own stamp on Hildegard, birthing a new voice into the world, and inviting listeners to go on this adventure with her.

The project took root in the earliest days of lockdown, as the absence of perennial, man-made din revealed the secret lives and hidden contours of the world without us. Randall, along with writer and sound artist Andrea Domanick and visual artist Aaron Farley, gathered field recordings and footage of this world devoid of people. From sneaking around the shuttered corridors of LA’s Union Station, to climbing empty freeway overpasses, to surveilling the pristine slopes of Lake Arrowhead, they compiled a document of our fleeting surreality. “Sound Field Vol. 2020 is a meditation on living through a year not many people thought would be possible,” says Randall. “We examined our own internal landscapes that were painted with a vast range of emotions and punctuated with fear, outrage, hope, love, loss and community.”

It’s about women who succeed from undermining the success of other women or choose to gain success from exploiting the oppression of other women. This is a character who has taken many forms throughout history, the kind of woman who seems perfectly content playing Gamma to the Alpha male. Bootlicker is my direct challenge to the notion of “women supporting other women,” and the falsehoods and unrealistic expectations that comes with a statement like that.” “I wrote the song to be played in two different arrangement styles, the first half being slow and haunting and the second going balls-to-the-wall rage. I was re exploring a lot industrial/proto industrial music I had listened to as a teenager in the 90s and used some elements of synth/drum machine sounds to convey all that anger, panic and darkness.” “Well, why not do a cover of your influences as a B-side? I was obsessed with the Ministry album With Sympathy when writing tracks for my upcoming album. JACK McDUFF LIVE AT PARNELL'S Jazz organist ‘Brother’ Jack McDuff (born Eugene McDuffy in 1926 September 17, 1926 – January 23, 2001) was second only to the infamous Jimmy Smith in terms of fame and the impact he made with the King of keyboard instruments the Hammond B-3 Organ. Self-taught on the organ, he recorded with Willis Jackson & Roland Kirk in the late ’50s and early ’60s, cutting high calibre souljazz dates for Prestige Records, and later Argo / Cadet. Blue Note and Verve Records. McDuff can also take the credit for launching the career of a particularly gifted young jazz guitarist when he recruited George Benson to his own quartet, which resulted in Benson's first solo deal in the mid 1960’s. ‘Live At Parnells’ is made up of 15 tracks selected from a week-long engagement in June 1982, featuring Danny Wollinski on sax, guitarist Henry Johnson and Garrick King on the drums. Stylistically, Jack and his group cover a lot of ground, especially for an organ quartet – from beautifully old school funky, gritty blues with tracks like Walkin’ The Dog & Blues 1 & 8, jazz standards like April In Paris, and A Night In Tunisia through to some frenetic and distinctly edgy fast paced jazz fusion type numbers - Make It Good and Untitled D Minor - and this reflects how Jack's ears were open to the newer, freer sounds that had developed in jazz and reflected in some of his recordings as ‘The Heatin’ System’ – as several tracks have modal and fusion touches that sound remarkably current. Soul Bank’s Greg Boraman explains the 23 year old back story to how this amazing release of previously unreleased music by a bona fide jazz legend came about. “I first heard these live recordings in 1999, when I came across Scott Hawthorn’s ’s jazz organ website, where he had made available his personal recordings of Jack and his band playing at Parnell’s in Seattle in 1982. It was amazing to have this music to check out – despite the obvious shortcomings with the condition of the recordings themselves”. Not only were they originally made on a C60 cassette which had degraded over the decades but, as Scott explains “Jacks Leslie speaker cabinet had a rip in the bass woofer. The thing sounded fine until he would step on a Bb or A bass pedal and then a very loud "buzzzzz" ensued, Jack ignored it and played the hell out of the pedals anyway”. Boraman sent the recordings to Claudio Passavanti, of mastering and audio production company Dr Mix to assess and he started the long process of restoring the audio using A.I based audio technology, namely ‘RX9’ by iZotope, and began transforming these recordings from just about listenable to commercially releasable. Listeners will still hear in places, remnants of the original tapes imperfections, and occasional touches of the buzz of Jacks torn Leslie speaker, but all things considered, especially when compared to the recordings as they were – only the most cynical critic would say the end results were not worth the considerable effort. Deeper than Static is the third solo album by Australian producer Alex Gillett and his affecting Boy is Fiction project. Those familiar with n5MD might remember Gillett's recent collaboration with Light Out Asia's Chris Schafer on 2018s A Single Beam of Light which perfectly merged the two band's styles. Deeper than Static finds Gillett at laser focus, refining the Boy is Fiction sound to near perfection. Electronic, often glitched-up beats embrace astute piano pacing and swashes of melodic synths. It's affecting and can be, at times, somewhat catchy, all with a haunting lean that Gillett has wholeheartedly embraced in his nearly fifteen-year career. As pockets of new jazz scenes emerge around the world, it’s apparent that New Zealand’s bubbling microcosm in Wellington interprets the genre through a unique lens.

Clear Path Ensemble bottles the energy of that burgeoning movement and distils it into moody morsels of differing styles. From electric jazz to ambient, experimental, house and funk – it’s a DIY, jam-session attitude towards composition, as the band members freely cherry-pick from a vast orchard of influences. Citing inspiration from 70s ECM catalogue, the ensemble channels the “expansive and astral” elements of electric jazz, with an introspective dynamic. At times it’s fused with catchy synth hooks, smooth basslines and shuffling beats, while other tracks morph into moody electronic soundscapes, and even Sun Ra-esque free jazz. Led by percussionist Cory Champion, the band released their debut self-titled album with HHV in 2020, followed by a headline performance at the 2021 Wellington Jazz Festival. Champion has played drums alongside some of New Zealand’s most revered contemporary musicians (Lord Echo, Lucien Johnson and Mara TK to name a few), and also produces leftfield deep house and techno under the name Borrowed cs, which partly informs the ensemble’s electronic production. Ally is psyched to be releasing The Cakekitchen’s dark and powerfully catchy fourth LP, Stompin Thru The Boneyard, on vinyl for the first time in the US! Originally released on CD domestically by Merge Records in 1994, Graeme Jefferies has remixed and remastered the original album creating a more even and equally stirring effect. Mac McCaughan (Merge / Superchunk) cites this as one of his favorite iterations of the band, and for good reason. “Tell Me Why You Lie” ranks among the best of Jefferies’ edgy pop songs, while the multi-part “Hole in My Shoe” finishes with a sterling instrumental segment. “The Mad Clarinet” is a highly textured acoustic piece featuring another NZ legend, Alastair Galbraith, on violin. The album ends with the perfect closer, “Another Sad Story,” which is not just another song, but one of the finest melancholy earworms you’ll ever experience. Jefferies has been on quite a tear over the last 3 years, from his stellar memoir Time Flowing Backwards, voted by Pitchfork as one of the 10 best music books of 2019, to 2020’s Trouble Again in this Town, his first new LP in almost 5 years, to 2021’s reissue of his seminal early Flying Nun solo album Messages For The Cakekitchen. We hope to also have new Cakekitchen material for you this year, but for now, enjoy this classic! Stompin Thru The Boneyard was primarily recorded by multi-instrumentalist Jefferies and French drummer Jean-Yves Douet. Keith McLean played bass on “Harriet Row,” and Huw Dainow played drums on that track and “Mr. Adrian’s Lost in His Last Panic Attack.” Gailbraith played the majority of the violins on “The Mad Clarinet.” The album was written and recorded in 1994 in various locations, including France, the UK, and New Zealand. Jefferies remixed and remastered it in 2020 and 2021. While there is a new two-piece live version of The Cakekitchen featuring Brett Jones of the Nocturnal Projections that toured Germany and Belgium in 2019, playing a large cross section of Cakekitchen, This Kind of Punishment, and Nocturnal Projections songs to appreciative audiences, the current health crisis has allowed Graeme to focus on playing solo again. While he and Brett continue to work on new material together virtually and plan to tour again when possible, Graeme played solo shows in Auckland in July 2020 and November of 2021, followed by shows in Christchurch and Dunedin in 2021 as well. Graeme’s first live show of 2022 is scheduled for Auckland in February, and he is in the process of scheduling additional tour dates for later this year. The Cakekitchen has released 16 full-length albums and several EP’s throughout the span of the band’s career, producing some of the most dynamic and unique music to come out of New Zealand, Europe, and the US during the 1990’s and early 2000’s through 2022.

“Supremely serene” Uncut “An exercise in aural hypnosis” MOJO Group Listening’s brilliant first album, Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works, Vol.1, was a haunting, meditative and lovingly considered selection box of musical reworkings. It featured rearranged tracks by the likes of Arthur Russell, Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. But it was also much more than that. In making this record of reimagined musical works, Stephen Black [Clarinet] and Paul Jones [Piano] were two musicians doing what all music fans do: comparing favourite tracks, turning each piece over for new meaning and developing a musical understanding of each other in the process. Fast forward a couple of years, a remix album of Vol.1, 12” What’s A Girl To Do? - featuring a re-work of the Fatima Yamaha club staple an EP of re- arrangements with Cate Le Bon from her LP Reward, a remix of Lambchop’s This Is What I Wanted To Tell You and the pair started Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.2 from an altogether different vantage point. Whereas their first record was put together over an intense three-day period in a hired-out studio, Vol. 2 saw the pair having to work around various pandemic lockdowns. This meant taking over Jones’ living room, where they gradually put its ten tracks together between September last year until March of this. They would record one or two songs over a couple of days then pause for the week, building and ruminating on ideas; it allowed the music take on a more ambitious nature – albeit within the chosen pairing of piano and clarinet – but also took in all the bits of chat, traffic noise and other creaks and squeaks of a home recording. Taken as a whole, there’s a gorgeous ambience to the record but that shouldn’t be confused for Volume 2 being an ambient listen. The organic understanding that Black and Jones have of each other’s processes as musicians means that the music sounds incredibly fluid, but the overall tranquillity of the record is made up of dozens of small nuances. It’s a puzzle that’s been put together just below the surface as the duo react with a warm emotion to the songs they’ve chosen. It’s in the way that Group Listening are able to prod, probe and contort the self-defined parameters that they’ve set themselves that makes Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.2 such an intriguing listen – and it’s the love and care they’ve taken over it that makes these versions entirely their own.

Taking influence from early post-punk and minimalist rock, GRAVE GOODS music has been described as urgent and demanding, claustrophobic yet spacious - guaranteed to grab your attention. Their influences come from early post-punk and minimalist rock, and their music is visceral and angular, set against a lyrical backdrop of existential ennui. Their first track released 'Juice' was featured on A Litany of Failures Volume III, and in December 2021 they released new single 'Phonetic Fetish'. This highly anticipated debut full-length TUESDAY.
