SLEATER-KINNEY THE CENTER WON’T HOLD (8/16)

WHAT’S INSIDE: Lightning Bolt | Zero 7 | Eilen Jewel

DOUG SHORTS GET WITH THE PROGRAM b/w HEADS OR TAILS DAP - 1122 A/B Look who's back! Just in time for your late summer soirées, Doug "Master Plan" Shor ts offers up another pair of modern soul movers guaranteed to tear up the club and backyard boogie-downs alike. The A-Side, “Get with the Program,” drops hard with a bass line and groove reminiscent of ESG at their best, but the relaxed feel and smooth vocal lend the tune a sophistication that elevates it to another level altogether. As Doug pleads with his potential lover to "Get with the Program" it's hard not to imagine that he's also speaking to the greater soul community. For those not already down with Doug's program, now's the time...act like ya know! On the flip we find our protagonist pleading with yet another prospective ladylove, this time accompanied by a bouncy, mid-tempo groove and Mar y Jane-esque synth line. “Heads or Tails” would have well at home on Chicago's boogie scene in the early '80s, but it doesn't ever sound dated. Both side of this superlative disc drip with positive vibes and unassailable groove. Summer of 2019 NEEDS this record!

SI-HDB-122 AVAILABLE NOW 12” 5055869558938 25

DJ Haram is a producer & DJ who distinctively ties her New Jersey musical history with more recent involvement in the Philadelphia DIY noise scene, whilst paying homage to her Middle Eastern roots. A close affiliate of New York's Discwoman collective, she is also one half of 700 Bliss with rapper & poet Moor Mother, who features on this EP. Haram’s non-traditional understanding of Islam, paired with a nuanced perspective on folk tradition and mythology, underpins the EP, bringing fantasy and colour to this in-between place. On opener ‘No Idol’, a darbuka rhythm pairs with offbeat claps around a dark synth and a contrasting airy flute melody, illustrating the theme of duality running through the music. The melodies of ‘No Idol’ are revisited in the final track remix, sped up with a classic Baltimore club beat and energetic bedsprings samples. ‘Interlude’ is a combination of the sounds and patterns from each song. ‘Gemini Rising's synth is reminiscent of John Carpenter, paired with a darbuka rhythm and war drums that transmit a religious sci -fi horror aesthetic. ‘Body Count’ is propelled by Jersey Club kicks with a distorted drum crunch and ticking rim shot in triplets, and an ethereal melody. ‘Grace (K.O.D.)’ has menacing cinematic stabs that feel like acid raining on the scattered percussion. On the 700 Bliss track ‘Candle Light’, Moor Mother's distorted and doubled up vocal chorus evokes a frantic yet solemn energy as she speaks on themes of life and death. ‘Grace’ is an EP constructed through deep feeling, transmitting vital dancefloor energy. It’s music is versatile, imbued with a strong will, personality, and colour.

Ride return with the 6th studio album of their career and their second since reforming in 2014 and signing to Wichita. As with their previous album, Weather Diaries (WEBB510LP & CD), Erol Alkan was in the producer’s chair, and Alan Moulder took care of the mixing (making this the fourth Ride album he has worked on). Gathering influences from sources such as the Jean Michel Basquiat exhibition at the Barbican, and the post punk sound of The Fall and Sonic Youth, Ride have made an album which contains echoes of their earliest days as a band, while bringing these elements into 2019. From its opening statement of intent - an introductory track akin to The Prodigy playing MBV, entitled ‘R.I.D.E.’ to its monumental finale on ‘In This Room’, via oceanic eddies, savage assaults and one all-out euphoric love song (first single ‘Future Love’), it’s a record for our times, with a title that could define them: This Is Not A Safe Place. Ride will tour the US and Canada in 2019 : SEPT 13 - 15 SEPT 16 SEPT 17 SEPT 18 SEPT 20 SEPT 21 SEPT 22 SEPT 24 SEPT 26 SEPT 27 SEPT 28 SEPT 29

istening to Peaer is like watching someone solve a complicated math equation with grace. Each moment is executed with precision, care and foresight for how it will serve a later part of the arrangement. Every note - and the space between - is integral to the composition. Comprised of two studio engineers and a guitar teacher, Peaer’s music is naturally methodical, but not at all rigid or convoluted. In fact, the Brooklyn trio’s new album, A Healthy Earth, is profoundly introspective, genuine and colorful: a sensational balance between meticulous sonic construction and self-analytical lyrics that open up into thought-provoking social commentary.

T J W

he follow-up to Peaer’s self-titled 2016 full-length (also available from Tiny Engines) finds the band using the classical concept of tone painting, which the members jokingly refer to as “musical puns.” It’s a technique in which the subject matter is reflected in the sounds themselves, like the progression in the swirling opener, “Circle,” or the bass clarinet solo in “Ollie,” a song directly inspired by the energy of vocalist / guitarist Peter Katz’s dog. ust as the musical elements have a unified sense of purpose, the broad narrative of A Healthy Earth is an examination of our shared existence. “Commercial” is written from the perspective of a paranoid baby boomer. “Joke” is about taking accountability for not treating Trump’s unorthodox campaign seriously. Love is an overarching theme of the record as well, but Peaer never approaches the topic in a derivative fashion. ith A Healthy Earth, Peaer has created a space where forward-thinking indie-rock, slowcore and asymmetrical pop can thrive harmoniously. It’s an inspiring musical image of how Katz and his bandmates interact in our beautifully cluttered world.

PAST PRESS QUOTES “Peaer examines life’s brutal push-and-pull with exactitude and finesse.” — STEREOGUM “Katz’s songs sound like David Bazan on a warpath or the desperate pleas of a man on his last breath.” — AV CLUB “Peaer has golden crests and dips, building to crescendos but never letting loose into chaos entirely.” — POST TRASH “Dynamic and mood-driven, constantly riding on energy for a short time before taking the nearest exit to mellower territory.” — EXCLAIM! “Fact: It’s an album you should hear.” — BROOKLYN MAGAZINE

Ana Roxanne ~~~

RELEASE DATE: August 16, 2019 LABEL: LEAVING RECORDS CATALOG: LR151 FORMAT: VINYL GENRE: ambient / experimental FOR FANS OF: Grouper, Hindustani Devotional Vocal Music, This Mortal Coil, Julee Cruise

1. Immortality 2. Slowness 3.Its a Rainy Day on The Cosmic Shore 4. Nocturne 5. I’m Every Sparkly Woman 6. In a Small Valley

Ana Roxanne is an intersex Southeast Asian musician based in Los Angeles. Born & raised in the Bay Area to immigrant parents, Ana’s love for music and singing began through her mother’s cd collection of 80’s/90’s R&B divas. Raised in the catholic church, she became a devout choir nerd and found any opportunity to sing, whether for religious mass, the jazz ensemble of her catholic high school, or karaoke at family gatherings. Her commitment to singing led her to a brief stint at a vocational jazz program in the cornfields of the midwest; in a remote town of 7,000 people, she began a formal study of jazz and classical music. During these years she would tour with various ensembles to beautiful old cathedrals in nearby cities and became enamored with the sacredness of choral music, as well as the enveloping sound of harmony. A near death experience, too, served as a connection between music and spirituality, and music as a healing art after facing tragedy. In 2013, Ana was also fortunate enough to spend a few months in Uttarkhand, India where she met an incredible voice teacher who introduced her to classical Hindustani singing. Living and studying with this teacher deeply impacted her outlook on the voice as art. It was there that she began to see the singer – the Diva – as a symbol of divinity; that the unique power of one’s voice comes from the vulnerability of using the body as an instrument. Be it romance, love, or worship of a deity – in order to access such depths of emotional expression, one must be willing to be intensely vulnerable, lay one’s heart in the open air, expose what is kept hidden. This brief study was the catalyst that led her to finish her music study at the experimental Mills College in Oakland, CA, where she began to combine all of these influences into her current self-titled project. This album ~~~ was created during her last years residing in the Bay Area, a tribute to the great musicians who inspired her and the landscape where she spent her formative years. In addition to the worship of R&B and pop divas, Ana’s current practice explores themes of gender & identity. In October of 2018, she decided to come out publicly as intersex, and is dedicated to being a voice for her community and speaking out about social justice for intersex youth.

Maria Usbeck Envejeciendo Out August 16, 2019 on Cascine Born in Quito, Ecuador, Maria’s Usbeck’s music is inspired and informed by her childhood in South America, her young adult life in New York City, and her many world travels in between. Following her 2016 solo debut, the tropical bricolage Amparo, Maria returns with her sophomore album, Envejeciendo, a collection of songs written and recorded across New York City, New Zealand, Japan, and Florida. Titled for the Spanish word for “aging,” Envejeciendo explores Maria’s first-hand experience with getting older, but filtered through her personal kaleidoscope of world textures and dreamlike narratives. The resulting record is an eccentric collection of Spanglish synth-pop, sun-dappled and mirror-polished, out of place and time. Tracklisting: A 01. Adios A Mi Memoria 02. Un Cabello Gris 03. If you don't love it, you do not deserve ears.” -DrunkenWerewolf, on Episodic Meaning is the third full length album by the Brooklyn- and Philly-based indie rock group Field Mouse. While listeners have previously described Field Mouse's sound as something akin to a shoegazey dream pop, Meaning marks a decided turn to less obscured realms, perhaps more simply described by terms such as rock and roll or pop. In that vein, lead single "Heart of Gold" boasts all the makings of a quintessential guitar-pop hit, opening the record with determined bombast and urgency. It features guitarist and lead singer Rachel Browne's diaphanous vocals mirrored by feverish yet nimble guitar hooks, creating an organic, deftly layered rock composition. The album's other two singles, "In Blue" and "Black Hole, Son" indulge yet further in the band's pop proclivities, honed tirelessly over their 10 year-long existence. Their earwormy hooks and pristine production combine for raucous, undeniably vibrant pop honesty, occasionally contrasted with a distinct explosiveness. Overall, Field Mouse's Meaning is a forceful accomplishment of pop-rock songwriting, replete with infectious harmonies and its own unique voice.

“I got it all… Robin-Eggs, Spacers, Black Beauties… Pot. I always have Pot because otherwise, I ain’t gonna make no money. See, I’m a girl and it’s tougher for me. They call me “Scor pion” because I like the Scorps’ a lot. See this shirt? It’s from the ’86 tour when they fuckin’ rocked! Concert shirts don’t last so long always. I think this one’s got the good ink in it.” — Lisa Walters, Class of ’88

It’s now 20 years since U.S. MAPLE and TALKER were sent to the Drag City office. Their third album took the egretions and abrasions of their early music to a new height of quiet horror, their contribution to the summer of ’99 — a hot, trying season, one that won’t soon be forgotten. “TALKER...goes to great lengths to sabotage language, both musical and verbal...a more restrained, skeletal feel than [SANG PHAT EDITOR and LONG HAIR IN THREE STAGES], which makes it sound even weirder. Before, the squelchy chaos would be piled on with lunatic glee; here, it’s measured out in languorous doses, the empty spaces seeming to signify some sort of sonic decay eating away at the music.” (8.5) — Nick Mirov, PITCHFORK 6/8/99 TALKER was recorded by Martin Bisi and produced by Michael Gira at Bisi Studios. “one of the most obliquely beautiful releases...evasive, creepy, engrossing, and lovely...No one sounds quite like U.S. MAPLE, and that’s the greatest compliment you can pay a band these days.” — AV CLUB, 2002

“droning, rubbery guitars, happenstance percussion and slow-burning tempos...the sonic equivalent of fresh tar: dark, hot and viscous. For all its surface chaos however, TALKER’s noise has an underlying space and structure that makes it as compelling as it is initially inaccessible; once caught in its sonic tar pits, it’s fascinating to hear what else is stuck in there.” — Heather Phares, ALL MUSIC GUIDE

U.S. MAPLE made two more records after TALKER before dissolving in the mid-aughts. TALKER has been out of print on vinyl since 2008. “if we could erase rock ‘n’ roll as we saw it, and reorganize it, and present it again while keeping its most important elements — mischief, elegance, songs, terror — if we could do all of those things...it was going to be a new form of rock ‘n’ roll.” — Al Johnson, ’99 “Formally impeccable in its rendition of the science of musical flaws and faults, this album is a genuine confession of love for what they hate...a calculated act of madness.” — Pierro Scaruffi, THE HISTORY OF ROCK MUSIC “it’s a great album. It’s just frustrating.” — Scott McGaughey, PERFECT SOUND FOREVER “When I go to camp, I put the bomb in their brains man, cuz’ I ain’t afraid of that. Peace out bitch!” — Dickey “West” Joyce, Class of ’99 TALKER has been newly replated for vinyl with all original packaging (gatefold sleeve, notebook paper insert, poster, cover sticker), because some experiences, like high school, should keep getting replayed over and over again, forever.

The Next World 19th Circuit Is This The Body? We Think There’s A Chemical Graveyard Breath

“The Next World”; the new Five Song follow up EP to Psychic Graveyard’s debut album “Loud As Laughter”; finds the band taking new risks and marks a startling leap forward. Founded by noise rock pioneers Eric Paul (Arab On Radar, The Chinese Stars, Doomsday Student), Paul Vieira (The Chinese Stars, Doomsday Student) and Nathan Joyner (Some Girls, All Leather, Hot Nerds), Psychic Graveyard have slipped past the boundaries of genre, interpenetrated the digital and physical realms and pieced together the soundtrack to the new aesthetic. According to the band, the process of writing “Loud As Laughter” involved constant exploration - at points the album focused heavily on guitars and live drums, at others - the songs were constructed primarily with synths, found sounds and synthetic beats; but with the “The Next World” EP all of these disparate elements have coalesced into a cohesive, unmistakable sound. After a series of remix singles (see below), the band elected to bring in an outside party to enhance the EP’s original tracks. “The Next World” was mixed by Seth Manchester of Machines With Magnets, a studio known for working extensively with The Body, Lightning Bolt, Battles, Fang Island, Daughters and Deer Tick to name a few. A music video of the title track, directed by Eric Livingston (Dead Cross), will premiere this summer in advance of a West Coast tour.

Move D's 'Building Bridges' is David Moufang's latest studio album. Close friends and long time collaborators, Thomas Fehlmann, Fred P, Juju & Jordash, D-Man & rEAGENZ all feature alongside Benjamin Brunn. Building Bridges was recorded at reSource, Heidelberg between 1999-2019 except "One Small Step..." which was recorded at Thomas Fehlman's Space in Berlin This album initially started out as an entry for the Inside Out series on Aus - based around the idea of collaborations with his nearest and dearest but when David sent me the music and wrote a few new tracks there was such a cohesive, timeless feel to it as a body of work I decided that it had to be a stand alone artist album. These tracks have been written over a twenty year period and involve 6 people but it sounds like it was written in one sitting. This is testament to David's creative aesthetic and the closeness of the relationship with his collaborators as a common feeling of warmth and smudged soul oozes out of every poor of this record. The combined forces of Steve Davis, Kavus Torabi (Gong/ Cardiacs/ Knifeworld/ Guapo) and Michael J. York (Coil/Teleplasmiste/Guapo) have arrived at no less than a modular driven kosmische colossus of transcendent power enough to drive all talk of green baize firmly into the blue yonder. With Davis’ modular geometry and ambient structures weaving with Torabi’s keen and skewed sense of melody and York’s various gifts for pipes, drones and fevered abstract – the result is a beguiling tapestry as likely to remind listeners of the countercultural benchmarks of Terry Riley, Cluster and Fripp/Eno as the later vortex-voyages of Emeralds and Seefeel. “The overall sound was pretty accidental” reckons Kavus. “I certainly didn’t expect the music to sound so ecstatic and positive,

“In twenty years of making records it’s certainly been the easiest and most enjoyable to make” reflects Kavus. “Now, this may have been partly due to us having no preconceptions or expectations but it wasn’t just that. There was absolutely no conflict, and we spent a lot of time together working on it - in my experience that’s a total miracle” “The personal journey I’ve been on with Kavus and Mike has been surreal” says Steve. “Probably more so than even the path that unfolded for me in snooker. Pat Dam Smyth – The Last King Quiet Arch LP QA0012LP CD QA0012CD

5024545858518 5024545858525

The Last King is the new album from Pat Dam Smyth, his first for Belfast institution Quiet Arch Records. Pat recorded The Last King in Ireland and London over a period of two years, and when Bad Seeds drummer Jim Sclavunos heard early versions of the songs, he leapt on board for additional production and mixing duties, dropping some extra dark magic into the fire. As the Floyd-esque swirling synths of KIDS open the album, mimicking the sound of the Chinooks that beat out the soundtrack to Pat’s childhood, the scene is set for an album that takes the listener deep into the rubble; no sooner have your ears adjusted to the dark than they are blinded by the light. While the album may not quite be a love letter to the Northern Ireland of his youth, it is certainly a fling with his formative experiences and defining decisions he made. The Last King is a record of tender, guttural fragility and razor sharp yet vulnerable explosions of rage at the cards he holds and those he’s discarded, all the while laced with an optimism that carries you through; an optimism that makes a bargain with tragedy in Where The Light Goes – reminiscent of early Lambchop or Bill Callaghan before turning into a sing-along for the end-of-times - and an optimism that helped Pat himself survive a breakdown in a city and country where he didn’t know a soul, the subject of Goodbye Berlin. This is an album of pop-philosophy; choosing quiet storms of suggestion rather than frenzied outpourings of blame. 1. Kids 2. Catch A Fish 3. Last King 4. Goodbye Berlin 5. Doesn’t Matter Now 6. Forty years since Martin Hannett first used synths and electronic sound effects in production work on Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures this album looks at 34 tracks of electronic and synth music that Hannett had compiled in the the mid 70s to early 80s whilst exchanging tapes by post with electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire. The compiled work of tracks from the two electronic music geniuses was to have been released by Hannett but was shelved in the early 80s. Here it is as he put it together for the planned album. Where Its At Is Where You Are LP WIALP071 5057805434078 CD WIACD071 5057805434085

12 men have walked on the moon, and 12 Astronauts includes a song for each of them, from Neil Armstrong to Harrison Schmitt and Gene Cernan (the Apollo 17 astronauts who quibble about who was the last man on the moon, was it the last person to set foot on the moon (Schmitt) or the last person to take his foot off the moon (Cernan)?). Darren has always had an interest in space travel since 1977 when he saw Star Wars. Back in 2001 Hefner (Darren Hayman’s previous band) released a single called Alan Bean about the 4th man on the moon (an all new version is included on 12 Astronauts).. Although Darren researched heavily he is essentially imagining himself as each astronaut and singing in the first person. The songs are not all set during the Apollo missions. Buzz Aldrin battles with his demons and fights for his marriage. Pete Conrad sympathises with his partner’s fear of an accident in flight. David Scott wonders what happened to his bodyguard on his press tour. Gene Cernan list every object he can think of that was left on the moon. Although the subject is big Darren has always written songs about small things and this album is no different. Spaceman No More (Neil Armstrong), Low Orbit (Buzz Aldrin), Timber Cove (Pete Conrad), Alan Bean (Alan Bean), Don't Clip My Wings (Alan Sheppard), Hard Disk in the Sky (Edgar Mitchell), Major Sunday (David Scott), Genesis Rock (James Irwin), 100% Oxygen (John Young), Duke's Dream (Charles Duke), It's Geology (Harrison Schmitt), Things We Left Behind (Gene Cernan)

"Naive Castle" shows a new side to the band, dialing down some of the shoegaze haze in favor of gorgeous, chiming pop that recalls the finest from bands like The Sundays and The Cranberries. It's the perfect soundtrack to these melancholic days as summer turns to fall. Pay extra attention to the lengthy ambient outro, a lovely touch that points to more new directions for this terrific band. On the b-side you'll find a dreamy, late-night cover of Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" that brings a wasted weariness to this tale of teenage yearning. Superbly-crafted pop is the order of the day here, with echoes of everything from prime Teenage Fanclub to Big Star to the southern power-pop of folks like Dwight Twilley and Tommy Hoehn. "Gone For Good" is 3:33 of pop perfection, with a marvelous melody, heavenly harmonies and a bit of a triumphant guitar solo sneaking in at the end. On the flip side we get another gem in "This Boy," a brief tune that still feels fully-formed, rather in the style of fellow West Bay songsmith Tony Molina. It's developing into quite the scene they have down there, and as long as the results are as thrilling as this single we can't wait to hear what's next. Part of the SLR30 Singles Series.

“marries a hearty balance of rich, comfortingly worn rhythms and dashes of cutting exuberance – crafting something unified and unsuspectingly poetic” – So Young “a prowling, preening mesh of garage punk riffs and voodoo drumming, akin to The Cramps if they’d formed in a London warehouse” – CLASH “Fluent providers of country licks, Sleep Eaters spit out something that could be described as countryfied roadhouse rock. Music for spaghetti western enthusiasts.” – Getintothis The London based country-infused rock quintet Sleep Eaters are ready to unveil their debut EP Holy Days on August 9 via Stockholm’s PNKSLM Recordings (home to ShitKid, Les Big Byrd, Magic Potion and more). Having become one of London’s most talked about new acts for their country-infused take on garage rock, Sleep Eaters have spent the past year honing their craft on stage and in the studio, recently supporting Drahla on their UK tour while drawing praise from the likes of So Young and Clash. Holy Days was recorded with Euan Hinshelwood of Younghusband and will be followed by UK and EU live dates during the summer and fall, including dates with L.A. Witch and Froth.

TRACK LISTING:

“Overflowing with Brian Gibson’s airplane-engine bass roar and distorted chants, Brian Chippendale’s punching drums, and a layer of viscous distortion on top, Wonderful Rainbow is an exhausting workout. Its 10 songs loop, cycle, and repeat so rigorously your brain feels a marathon runner’s burn.” - Pitchfork “[Wonderful Rainbow] is purposeful and powerful, never more so than on the terrible grandeur of the climactic “30,000 Monkies” with its endless crescendi, and the floundering “Duel In The Deep” - Uncut Legendary band Lightning Bolt’s Wonderful Rainbow is one of the most quintessential albums to come from the underground in the last 20 years. Included in lists like Pitchfork’s “200 top albums of the 2000s” and the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Lightning Bolt’s seminal record solidified their place as pillars of the underground community. Wonderful Rainbow saw the duo of Brian Chippendale (drums/vocals) and Brian Gibson (bass) being compared to the likes of Slayer, Ornette Coleman, and early Boredoms, and captured the bristling, immeasurable energy of their mythical live shows, which continue to astonish audiences today. The album’s now iconic artwork (drawn by Chippendale) mirrors the music’s curious and exhilarating blend of chaos, noise, intense beauty and childlike wonderment. Lightning Bolt paved the way for countless artists who followed them, cracking the noise-rock and underground scenes wide open with an album as frenetic and violent as it is overflowing with joyful abandon.

THE RUBINOOS FROM HOME WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: 8/23/19

Exactly forty years after The Rubinoos capped their original and unlikely rise to fame with the Beserkley Records classic Back to the Drawing Board!, the definitive line-up featuring Jon Rubin, Tommy Dunbar, Donn Spindt and Al Chan are back in action on new album From Home, out August 23 on Yep Roc Records. After forming in 1970 when no one in the band was old enough to drive a car, the Bay Area rockers earned hero status in the late 1970s over an incredible three-year stretch (1977-1980) which saw them release two albums, chart on the Billboard Hot 100, perform on American Bandstand and Old Grey Whistle Test, back Jonathan Richman, grace the pages of Tiger Beat, and tour with Elvis Costello. The Rubinoos have toured and recorded in different incarnations in the intervening decades, but From Home represents a true return to the original spirit of the group. This new album is thanks in part to fellow SF artist Chuck Prophet, a self-avowed superfan who saw the Rubinoos dozens of times as a teenager. From Home sees this magnificently unconventional four-piece return with all of the “Beach Boys backed by a garage band” intensity and impeccability of their 70s breakout. From Home was recorded with Chuck Prophet and engineer Paul Q. Kolderie (The Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, Radiohead’s Pablo Honey) at San Francisco’s Hyde Street Studios, the same legendary room where The Rubinoos cut their first single for Beserkley in the mid70s. During those early years, the group’s embrace of Top 40 and doo-wop sounds largely left them as outsiders in hippie-hangover San Francisco, but their devoted hometown following - including Prophet and Jonathan Richman - helped them break out on a national stage. The band’s thrashy, quirky take on Tommy James and the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now” scaled the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977, and their 1979 hit “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” remains a radio staple to this day. This early magic was rekindled by the group’s newly-formed songwriting team of Prophet and Tommy Dunbar during the earliest From Home sessions, as the two bonded over shared touring experiences (“Rocking in Spain”) and undersung musical heroes (“Honey from the Honeycombs”), all while creating a universe of oddballs (“Masochist Davey,” “Miss Alternate Universe”) only fitting of a new Rubinoos record.

Seratones’ aptly named sophomore release POWER is described by poet and author Hannif Abdurraquib as a “glorious, swelling album…[a] sonic monument, and precise lyrical tapestry. AJ Haynes bends her gloriously malleable voice seamlessly around the temples of rock, and soul, and funk. All of them, unfurling in waves of keys, staccato percussion and wailing curves of guitar.” Based in Shreveport, Louisiana, Haynes and founding members, drummer Jesse Gabriel and bassist Adam Davis, form the kind of laser-focused rhythm section that you only get from bandmates who’ve been playing together since they were teenagers. New members Tyran Coker (keys) and Travis Stewart (guitar) bring a fresh dynamic to the band with interstellar soundscapes and entrancing melodies, all while maintaining the emotional edge and intensity from their acclaimed proto-punk debut record Get Gone. POWER exemplifies a true strength in vulnerability, a kaleidoscopic view into Haynes’ passions, hopes, and worries: from her love of poetry to her advocacy for Reproductive Justice and racial equity. Hard-learned lessons from lovers and intimate friends. The struggles to adapt and overcome. POWER is as much a statement as it is a question, a semiotic exploration of sound and Soul.

Esther Rose You Made It This Far

/fatherdaughterrecords

August 23, 2019

@father_daughter

“Esther Rose’s gorgeous, honest country songs are steeped in tradition...she channels country pioneers in a way that sounds incredibly genuine and free of contrivance” - The Fader “Small folk songs with grand implications” - Stereogum

For fans of Patsy Cline, Margo Price, Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell Hometown: New Orleans, LA • Sophmore album by Esther Rose • Recorded at Mashed Potato Studios in New Orleans, LA • Engineered by Sam Doores (The Deslondes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) • Features Cameron Snyder & Dan Cutler of The Deslondes (New West Records) • Featured on Jack White’s Boarding House Reach (2018, Third Man Records) “I’m always changing,” Esther Rose sings at the top of her sophomore album, You Made It This Far. The line is at once a promise and a plea, a concise distillation of her commitment to evolution as well as her dogged determination to meet every challenge in her path with unconditional acceptance. Laid-back yet deliberate, her delivery here marries old-school country and rural folk with a plainspoken philosophy that’s thoroughly modern, and the end result is a record that’s as joyful as it is restless, one that weaves fiddle and lap steel around profound revelations, late night conversations, and all the moments in between. A New Orleanian for the last decade, Rose first gained national prominence with the release of 2017’s This Time Last Night. The record earned Rose festival performances from Savannah Stopover to AmericanaFest alongside dates with The Punch Brothers, Pokey Lafarge, and The Deslondes, and it even caught the ear of fellow Detroit native Jack White, who was so taken with the music that he invited Rose to duet with him on his Boarding House Reach album and to share the stage for a live performance at Jazz Fest.

While writing the songs that would become You Made It This Far, Rose found herself working through a period of tumultuous change, grappling with a breakup, a move, and a family illness all at once. Splitting her time between New Mexico and New Orleans, she pondered what it takes to love and to be loved, to be vulnerable enough to let someone in and brave enough to face the pain when they’re gone.

It’s not a term you’ll be instantly familiar with, but it is a somewhat perfect descriptor of Philadelphia quartet Queen of Jeans. Intentionally tongue-in-cheek, the self-ascribed term was coined by the band to chronicle the haphazard nature of their core ingredients. They are a slew of sounds and influences in a juxtaposition that somehow strikes balance, sculpted over time into the refined and tenacious outfit they are today. On new album if you're not afraid, i'm not afraid, Queen of Jeans have teamed up with prominent producer Will Yip to help usher the band into a new sonic era. While their signature sound still pervades the overall work, the album marks a decided turn toward more tightly knit songwriting that emphasizes their most alluring strengths. A continued staple of their sound, layered vocal harmonies shine throughout, drenching the twangy, americana-reminiscent guitar lines in beautiful, evocative light, and illuminating the album's vast yet serene soundscapes.

On Guild Of The Asbestos Weaver, London’s Alexander Tucker (Grumbling Fur, Imbogodom) lets his love of Sci- Fi and cosmic horror loose! Tucker is a composer focused on synthesis and with this his creative manipulation shines. Tucker, known for his cello and six string guitar playing, manipulates these source sounds by layering looping and processing with a Roland 404 creating something that bears little resemblance to its source. Guild of the Asbestos Weaver, named after Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, brims with dystopian fantasy, but unlike the more political book, seeks to simply spark the imagination, envisioning an alternate past and new future. Tucker’s boundless and singular vision is on full display in his most immersive and intoxicating music yet. Minimalist motifs are sculpted into deep drone constructions, weaving dense layers of maximalist sound to powerful disorienting effect. The songs occupy a unique territory somewhere between paranormal electronics and cosmos-seeking psychedelia, standing as some of Tucker’s heaviest and most hallucinogenic work to date. Falling in love takes over the body. Hearts race, stomachs churn, blood boils, hairs stand up. It also takes over the mind, relegating almost everything but the recipient of that love obsolete. Bunny, the new record from Ghost Orchard (aka Sam Hall) is the documentation of falling in love. Out on August 23rd through Orchid Tapes, the influential Brooklyn DIY label run by Warren Hildebrand of Foxes In Fiction that has been responsible for some of the first releases from Soccer Mommy, Spencer Radcliffe, (Sandy) Alex G, Emily Reo and Yohuna, the album is the culmination of over three-and-a-half years of work in which Hall wrote over 300 songs and scrapped five full albums worth of material before settling on what now exists as a final snapshot of his relationship. Recorded, mixed and mastered solely by Hall in his bedroom, it is a “bedroompop” record in name alone. With production that far exceeds his previous efforts, bliss and poppy, Hall takes massive strides on Bunny. A departure from his roots, it sees him leaning heavily on electronics, inspired as much by Brockhampton as he is by Bjork, taking notes from Katie Dey, Frank Ocean, Aphex Twin and JPEGMAFIA. It’s a record that revels in minutiae, and displays a keen attention to detail in both its production and song writing. Hall himself, his relationship and his life are inextricably woven throughout its 14 songs, and his with his openness he hopes that Bunny can bring some light into the world. “The world is really dark right now, so it’s nice to create something that has no overhanging implications, when you listen to the record you’re not going to think about how the world is dying. It’s just a focus on all of the good parts of your life.” “bunny” is released August 23rd, 2019 via Orchid Tapes.
