Picture on the Wall: Deluxe Edition RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 11, 2017 Picture on the Wall was Freddie McKay’s first album. It was released by Studio One in 1971, and this was the first real introduction to the singer for the reggae public after a series of unsuccessful singles. Despite a potential hit with “Love Is a Treasure” done for Treasure Isle the song was marred by its credit to “Treasure Boy”. Coming to Studio One with the Soul Defenders allowed Freddie to finally find his voice. His recording of “Picture on the Wall” is a top Studio One track, and was a massive hit for the label. Other top songs for the label include “Drunken Sailor,” “I Am a Freeman,” “Sweet You, Sour You,” and the remake of “Love Is a Treasure,” all found on this release. Containing 24 tracks, with many tracks not found on album before, this is the definitive collection of Freddie McKay at Studio One. The original Jamaican stereo release is found on sides 1 and 2. On the remaining two sides are some of McKay’s top songs, including instrumentals, a DJ version and the extended mix of “Love Is a Treasure.” McKay’s untimely death in 1986 cut short a promising career, but here the listener can again rediscover the greatness of one of reggae’s unsung heroes.

In April of 2016, Steve Azar became the first artist to record a full-length studio album at the legendary Mississippi landmark, Club Ebony. 40 years in the making, and his first record in 5 years, Steve cut 13 new original tracks. The club, now belonging to the B.B. King Museum, was turned into a recording studio capturing the rich history and vibe of the room and in turn creating inspirational performances on the record.

Ross Goldstein Inverted Jenny
As a photographer, visual artist and member of the cosmic brainbending trio Devin Gary & Ross, Ross Goldstein has built a layered catalog of softly psychedelic artistic output, but none has been as personal as the sonic spiderweb of his second solo album Inverted Jenny. The last time Ross showed up solo was in 2007 on the quietly-released Trail Songs, a collection of more Americanaleaning songcraft. A decade later, he picks up on threads started on his debut, but continues in a far more inward direction, blurring deftly arranged instrumental backdrops with patient, bucolic songwriting for a discreetly epic modern classic in headphone music. Stitched together slowly over the course of two years at various spots, Inverted Jenny finds Ross collaborating with a host of pedigreed players. Rather than a large ensemble recording together in a room, however, most of the guests overdubbed their parts after in oneon-one sessions with Ross, furthering the strange intimacy of the album. Lyrics and vocal parts were written for most of the songs, but as the recording process continued, some songs seemed to say more as instrumentals, lyrics feeling overwrought or even redundant. Possibly informed by his work collecting field recordings, Ross made the deliberate decision to scrap vocals from a good number of the tracks, offering them up as scenes without dialogue, every bit as important to the bigger picture as their sung counterparts. The question never overtly asked but always in the air on Inverted Jenny is “what happens after the big thing happens?” The transformative cross country road trip, the devastating break up, the mind-melting all night mushrooms experience-- these are the types of main events that have inspired lots of great art, but what happens in the interim? What does it feel like as life moves through these chapters and has to bounce around the echoes they leave behind? Ross travels through a glowing internal world with these songs, observing moments of both stillness and the sublime from a distance. There’s a sheen of loneliness that runs throughout, but never a bitterness. The record opens with a trifecta of Van Dyke Parks-tinged open road songs, but even in the joyful discovery of these songs there’s the sense that they’re viewed from a loner’s perspective. This feeling only grows as things shift from roadside distractions to the plush instrumentals and gentle vibes that make up the record’s second half. Gorgeous arrangements set up a playful conversation between warm synths, stoned guitar leads, meticulously placed touches of chamber pop orchestration and even sounds of the natural world from Ross’ own field recordings, always buzzing with life. By the end of the album we’ve walked alongside for a while, watching the songs navigate their lonesome internal landscape like a late night wearing blissfully into morning. At the end of this night (and every other night, really) there’s no answer to be found, no great revelation besides wandering along into another beautiful morning.

Gathering together a rhythm section consisting of Michael Wood (Whoa Melodic/Singing Adams) on bass and Cat Loye (Fever Dream) on drums, The Hayman Kupa Band create brash, bold and effortlessly melodic power pop. Sharing writing duties and sometimes singing each others words, lines are blurred and creativity explored in a wonderfully exuberant collection of songs. The album is an exploration of relationships and, at its heart, it’s the sound of a friendship being made. Darren explains further: It’s only happened a few times but just once or twice I have seen someone on stage and thought, “I want to be in a band with them.” But I thought it the first time I saw Emma playing with her magnificent and under-rated band Standard Fare. Co-writing is something I’m not used to. It’s very intimate. Emma’s lyrics are sharp and precise whereas mine are more metaphoric. We talked about relationships and that’s what the album is about. It’s about our fears and paranoias and the search for trust and love. We deliberately swapped lines and genders so the narrative is never truly that of traditional duets. We recorded everything live including the vocals with only a handful of overdubs. We recorded it two and a half years ago and it has been like a time capsule whilst me and Emma released five other albums. Selwa Abd (originally from Morocco, currently residing in Brooklyn) uses the fictional character Bergsonist, from Brooklyn, Slovakia, as her musical guise. Derived from Deleuze’s Bergsonism, Bergsonist uses intuition as a method to deliver her/his instinctive psychoanalytic theories.A blend of different audio sources and samples are used as a way to capture the essence of the ‘present’ moment, manipulating found sounds along with self-concocted digital fragments to combine in in the span of a set, given time. Bergsonist allows inspiration to come from anywhere, yet she/he limits themselves by the gear/tools that are used. The approach consists of inhaling all the energy of the city — influenced by trips to museums, galleries, shows, talking to people and sensing nature — and exhaling it sonically. Bergsonist reacts to this energy and inspiration without any specific rules, styles or genres — extending the array of possibilities by always pushing preconceived uses of the tools. Track Listing
