TAMI NEILSON Kingmaker

July 15, 2022

From being cradled as a baby in the arms of Roy Orbison, to performing “Beyond the Stars” with Willie Nelson on her new album Kingmaker, you would think that Tami Neilson lived a musical fantasy life. In between these monumental occurrences, the Neilson Family were having to busk in the streets to put food on the table, roaring down the highway in an exploding RV to open for Johnny Cash, which she did, at 18, in her pajamas. Recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios, "Kingmaker" exposes the patriarchal structures of the industry, society, and the family. She sings of the underestimation of women, of their resilience. From singing with Kitty Wells at 10, to slipping demo tapes in the laundry bags of stars. From humble beginnings to success on her own terms. Tami Neilson is a game changer, a cage shaker, a Kingmaker. “Royal Yellow” LP OUT9177lp

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Even Newman & Lori Stanton from Outside Music

How did you personally get started in the music industry? Evan: I was in finance, hated every second of it, quit and moved out west to Vancouver where I got a job at a predatory lender, then it was robbed, in which I was held hostage, and with a gun to my head I said “if I ever get out of this, I’m not going to work shit jobs anymore”. I moved back to Toronto and started my journey in the music biz. Lori: I started in HMV Canada’s management training program straight out of college. There were no guns involved. When and where did the label begin? Lori: Outside Music (the label) was founded in Toronto, Canada in 2001 as an offshoot of indie distribution company, Outside Music. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Evan: I believe Lloyd, the founder of the company, wanted something simple that indicated a company that existed Outside of the norms of the industry How has the label changed since it started? Evan: The label was initially an outlet for the warehouse staff who were also in bands, which included The Sadies. The label was always the little sibling to the distribution company up until 2007 when industry trends started to shift. The label has grown significantly over the past 15 years, and has become the major focus of the company. We’ve expanded beyond the singer songwriter genre and have expanded to include a sub label in Next Door Records Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Evan: Of course being an independent label, we’re all doing various things. I do a lot of the big picture stuff, Lori is very much on the day-to-day details and steering the ship, Peggy Hogan is focused on marketing but has expanded her role into A&R while Emma handles a lot of the manufacturing and public funding. Cathy runs the finances and is a co-owner and Margaret is our D2C contact and assists in the marketing campaigns. Lori: Women who like to get things done. +Evan, who I suppose also likes to get things done. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Evan: Album sustainability. With the absence of touring, sustaining the visibility on albums past release date has been challenging. We focus on content creation whether it be in the form of recordings or videos.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? Lori: This is an evil, evil question! My current favorite is Abigail Lapell’s new album “Stolen Time” but with a new Tami Neilson record due out in July, I might be swayed! If I hop into the wayback machine, our early releases from The Sadies would all make the list. Evan: It’s Matthew Barber’s “Ghost Notes” which was one of the first releases for Outside Music. He had been on Warner Music for 2 records and he absolutely hated the major label experience. I felt this record was the first one he made for himself and it showed remarkable confidence from an artist who was almost beaten down by the machine of the music business. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? Evan: I worked with the White Stripes and we had them play every province and territory in Canada, at their last stop, in Newfoundland, they played one note but were able to say they played every place. We ended up releasing it as a record/DVD What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? Lori: I worked in distribution forever before moving over to the label, so I’ve heard (and possibly made) every argument both for and against color variants more times than I care to count. From a label perspective, we leave it to our artists to decide what feels right to them. Our planned releases for 2022/2023 all have a standard version and an indie exclusive variant. More often than not, our artists choose to have them both be colored vinyl. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? Lori: We never stopped making CDs so we welcome the uptick in demand. No cassettes. Managing vinyl manufacturing is tricky enough. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Lori: The best looking, least annoying, most discerning folks with the greatest taste. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own? Lori: HELL NO. Evan: Absolutely not

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Evan: We are Canadian and we are subsidized by the Canadian government so every release of ours is by a Canadian artist. “Canadian” is not a genre but there’s a certain charm that exists within Canadian albums, hard to classify but you know it when you hear it.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Evan: They’re very important to us. We want our artists to be aligned on values and morals, and good people who believe in equality and measures that protect a just society. Our artists are our main resource, and we need to be aware of the toll that a career in the arts can take on one’s mental health.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? Evan: Mostly online, and through other artists on the label, and artists who reach out to us unsolicited. One of those artists is Bells Larsen, the youngest artist we’ve worked with in some time, they have a classic late 90’s alt singer songwriter vibe but their youth gives their sound this quirkiness and earnestness that makes the songs so endearing Lori: I follow a lot of record stores and labels online so I guess that’s where a lot of my new finds come from. Shazam is my friend, too, though my Shazam history can get pretty embarrassing. I’d echo Evan in being inspired by Bells Larsen. That’s a record I can’t wait for people to hear. My most recent purchases have been the new Frightnrs LP (Daptone) and Dehd (Fat Possum).

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Lori: I started in the 90’s, before the online world really existed. “Change” has been the one constant, but increasingly the changes seem to be for the better. We are slowly moving towards a healthier industry that is more inclusive for women, BIPOC and those who identify as LGBTQ2SIA+. Too slowly, still, but I think the momentum is there.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Evan: Timeless Songwriters. We don’t have singers, we have singer-songwriters How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? Evan: When we first started we wanted to be a small curated label with a few select releases a year that were all very special. We try and keep that mantra of working with artists we care for and respect, both as artists and as people. We just expanded our roster and look to continue to grow year after year Lori: I love when the roster grows and we bring new artists in. There’s an energy that comes with each one that just adds life to the label. This year, Abigail Lapell and Jenny Berkel joined us, and we have a pretty exciting new addition coming on board later this year – a name many will recognize.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Evan: We started Next Door Records two years ago and it’s a more free-form label that doesn’t subscribe to one genre but aims to support marginalized artists as a primary focus Lori: I would start a punk label that Evan would not agree to distribute. The name stays private. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Lori: This question is almost as evil as the “favorite label release” one. Canada is home to some truly stellar independent record stores, from Red Cat in Vancouver, BC all the way to Fred’s in St. John’s, Newfoundland. At home, in Ottawa, I am a sucker for Vertigo Records. When ordering online, I buy from Toronto indie shop Pop Music. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Evan: We put out good music from good people, and that the records remain timeless such that one could put a record on from 2011 and it would sound pretty good as that comet hurdles towards earth.

WET LEG WET LEG OVERVIEW After releasing two of the best singles of the year ("Chaise Longue" & "Wet Dream"), Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers were catapulted from their confines on the Isle of Wight to sold out venues across the UK and packed-out tents at festivals causing giddy excitement wherever they went. Enter their debut album, Wet Leg.

Wet Leg was recorded and produced in the main by Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey (“Chaise Longue” and “Angelica” were produced by Jon McMullen and Josh Mobaraki respectively). The album was mostly recorded in London, in April 2021, meaning they had a finished album before the world had even heard debut single “Chaise Longue” or played live. Right from the start of Wet Leg, Teasdale and Chambers focus was fun, and a dry sense of humour ripples through the album. "I wanted to write fun songs, I didn't want to indulge sad feelings too much, I wanted to write stuff that's fun to listen to and fun to play,” reveals Rhian. “But then, the sad seeps through, as well." TRACKLISTING 1. Being In Love 2. Chaise Longue 3. Angelica 4. I Don't Wanna Go Out 5. Wet Dream 6. Convincing 7. Loving You 8. Ur Mum 9. Oh No 10. Piece Of Shit 11. Supermarket 12. Too Late Now

Wet Leg is sad music for party people, and party music for sad people. It is cathartic and joyful and punk and scuzzy and above all, it's fun. "Wet Leg was originally just supposed to be funny," says Rhian. "As a woman, there's so much put on you, in that your only value is how pretty or cool you look. But we want to be goofy and a little bit rude. We want to write songs that people can dance to. And we want to people to have a good time, even if that might not possible all of the time."

SONIC YOUTH In/Out/In In mulling over their career, it’s staggering to realize that Sonic Youth not only delivered a healthy slab of releases as a unit but also have a myriad of shelved material still waiting for broader ears. While the group’s current Bandcamp abode lays out a generous amount of it, a bunch more has yet to surface. And it’s a massive mountain to chip away at in the sense of the group output alone; individual members’ projects are a whole other game, needless to say. In/Out/In ably delivers a new slab of mostly-unheard Sonic righteousness, with a scope on the post 2000-era band in especially zoned/exploratory regions. The 80’s and 90’s continually saw Sonic Youth reminding everyone that their jams ran free alongside song craft and visible development album to album; there were Peel excursions, dipping toes into soundtrack work starting with 1986’s Made In USA, and of course great impromptu expansive takes of tried and true previous material onstage. The millennial establishment of home turf studio spaces in NYC then NJ greatly egged on forays into improvisation and composition on their own clock as evidenced in Goodbye 20th Century and the plethora of SYR releases that trickled out side by side between major release albums. At this juncture they had already created a cultural template for a whole new breed of rock heads who, in turn, entered a feedback loop to SY itself, which cultivated more of its own new moves informed by the very fandom they had for their acolytes all the while pushing the band outward to uncharted fields. Jim O’Rourke’s residency had already influenced the band’s material in part into denser, longer, meditative paths. Mark Ibold’s entry for their swan song The Eternal also allowed for more of this exploration with Kim Gordon having more room to commit to third guitar. However The Eternal also took more cues from Ibold’s bottom-end swing and perhaps dialed back the expansiveness of the NYC Ghosts and Flowers and Sonic Nurse era a notch in a cool way, making it one of the best group efforts for me, anyway. Perhaps this fueled some of these tracks here, in an already comfortable zone with a new lineup and new drive to take sideroads to even more outer realms. In/Out/In reveals their last decade to be still heavy on the roll-tape and bug-out Sonic Youth. Not all recorded in one session but rather spread out over 2000-2010, the sequencing here is especially well thought out. Opening with the 2008 “Basement Contender” we get a super-unfiltered glimpse of the band at Kim and Thurston’s Northampton house creating a gentle springboard of Venusian choogle, with phased Lee lappings at cascading Thurston figures forming a simmering soundtrack. “Machine” offers another instrumental track from The Eternal sessions and is a steamy exercise in stop-start rhythmic grunt amidst a jungle of chiming and upward spiraling chord progressions. We’ve also got the extended score offering “Social Static” from the Chris Habib/Spencer Tunick film of the same name, draping white sheets of noise over your head then descending into a gauzy maw of car-alarm guitars and ambient-yet-disruptive turbulence that eventually subsides into a smoky coda. Two more tracks round out the set both culled from a Three Lobed box set of various artists from 2011 called Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them: “In & Out” quietly resembles Can in a cave with dripping stalactites of Kim’s wordless tone rumble and was recorded at a soundcheck in Pomona California and their home Hoboken turf in 2010. “Out & In” from 2000 was done in their late downtown NYC studio and serves to close out this LP’s last 12 minutes as a reminder of what they got up to with O’Rourke there. More gentle time shift chord framework erupts into molten fury before mutating into the sonic equivalent of a slowly collapsing star. Casting an audio net over the entire instrumental/outtake oeuvre of Sonic Youth’s long history isn’t something easily committed to a single release without a doubt. Hearing these tracks in comparison to, say, 1986’s Made In USA material shows the massive leaps they took over the years. Whereas ’86 showed them freshly discovering their go-with-the-flow instrumental abilities for a soundtrack, their last decade showed them complementing the ambience with assured twists and turns that only came to be through their inimitable and rooted telepathy. That, plus the freedom to compose in more comfortable environs other than dank Ludlow Street rental spaces (hard to believe Daydream Nation was created in a claustrophobic basement) most assuredly was a component in their continued paths of discovery. Shifting on the drop of a dime from quiet/deep forays into full on noised-out Autobahn stomps, they painted detailed and varied brush strokes and continually created organic sounds that undoubtedly carried the signature sound of the band, while ringing loud with their continual drive to free themselves from just that. Enjoy this capsule. Brian Turner, 2021

The long awaited debut LP from Kokoroko - Could We Be More 5th August 2022 “Drawing influence from West African highlife and jazz, well-marinated in enough polyrhythm seasoning to induce fires on the dance floors they play.” Okay Africa “Afrobeat, jazz, soul and ’70s psych-leaning funk - luminescent” Cool Hunting “This female-led, multicultural collective of under 30s is a vital example of not only jazz’s new form but the shape of things to come.” The Guardian Following the huge success of 2018’s Kokoroko EP’ and the sensational Abusey Junction (100M streams and counting), Could We Be More’ is an expansive and ambitious debut album that speaks to the force of Kokoroko. Each song possesses the power to evoke memories and harness the feeling of home through music: from the psychedelic, funk-laden previous single ‘Something’s Going On’ to the congregational energy of today’s track ‘We Give Thanks’, ‘Could We Be More’ fuses together the African- London synergy which so naturally underpins the heat of Kokoroko’s identity.

Lately is a record I wrote to share some of where I’ve been with you. Whenever songs happen for me, they are like photographs of time. Last year was tough. That’s an understatement for certain. Tears were shed, lives were lost, and lonely was a way of life. I have always felt lonely, but never gone to the depths of solitude that I had in 2020. The irony of that is, I was not alone at all in that space. Everyone had lost something, and we all were trying to rebuild our lives as we knew them. As a means of keeping sane, I started to write songs. Some of them sucked. I kept doing it though, because I had nothing else to fill my cup. “The Last Tear” came and I thought, I’d like to share this. That opened the door for more. “Been” happened not too long after, reminiscing about this and that, and so on. The inspiration was occurring from simple moments, such as gathering with my family after months of not doing so. Or walking around looking at my neighbors on their porches and waving a hello. I also was finally catching up with myself, and understanding I was reeling from some of my missteps. Forgiveness can occur through written words for me, so it was quite soothing to have my guitars and a melody. Depression was a big part of fall and winter. I forgot how down I could feel. But I also felt hope in that light came from a memory of a past adventure or a stranger’s smile while walking down the street. Little things lifted my spirits. I missed my friends. I missed my family. I was devastated by the grief our country was facing, as well as the world. I felt unified in knowing that I was not on my own in that mentality. Many were questioning a lot of what was happening and though ideologies and understandings were fractured and opposing, most people I know craved to be together again. I realized that my heart was full of everything I loved and that would carry me forward for the time being. Eventually we would all get back to one another. Now that we are beginning to, I will be thrilled to share and play these songs for you. Much Love, Lilly Hiatt

FiEld OF dREAMS (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Cornfield Green Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: AUGUST 5, 2022 We are always on the lookout for soundtracks to reissue on LP, especially from the late ‘80s/early ‘90s when labels were barely releasing vinyl if at all. But we’d sort of hit a rough patch, a slump if you will, when every title we pursued was either already taken or just plain unavailable. Then, one night as we were fast asleep, we were awakened by a voice. “If you press it, they will come.” Huh? Press what? Who will come? Then it hit us…could it possibly be true that James Horner’s classic soundtrack to Field of Dreams has not been reissued on vinyl?! We did a little “scouting” around, and sure enough…this record hasn’t been available since its very limited original release back in 1989! So this is a rookie reissue, and quite the phenom at that (just like you, Moonlight Graham!), pressed in green and yellow “cornfield” vinyl, and featuring James Horner’s amazing, spine-tingling score. Don’t strike out on this one!

(Skating Rink White Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: AUGUST 5, 2022

• Also Still-Hip-to-This Day Artists Like Nick Drake, Annie Lennox, and Louis Armstrong

They were destined by fate to be together…but first, fate wanted to have a little fun. This 2001 film put John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale on a romcom rollercoaster as they pursue each other through the years and though so, so many excruciating near-misses before they wind up where they started, together at an ice skating rink admiring a pair of cashmere gloves (and each other!). And there for every twist and turn? One of the era’s great film soundtracks, including artists hip and new (Wood, David Gray, John Mayer), hip and not-so-new (Nick Drake, Annie Lennox), and old but still hip (Louis Armstrong). Never before on LP, our release comes with an inner sleeve featuring production stills and a skating rink white vinyl pressing. A great listen for an evening when the attraction is mutual!

BritnY Fox: BITE DOWN HARD (Clear with Brown Splatter Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: AUGUST 5, 2022 For their third album (fourth if you count the debut EP In America), Britny Fox ditched Dizzy Dean Davidson and brought in Tommy Paris on vocals, joining ex-Cinderella guitarist Michael Kelly Smith and ex-Waysted drummer Johnny Dee along with the estimable Billy Childs on bass. Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde and Poison drummer Rikki Rockett joined the party, too…this 1991 record is another one of those really good glam-metal albums (check their cover of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band’s “Midnight Moses”) that got neverminded by the early ‘90s grunge craze. It also fell victim to the early ‘90s embrace of the compact disc format; Bite Down Hard only came out on vinyl in Europe, and if you want to buy one of those copies, it will indeed take a bite out of your budget. Our first-time-in-the-U.S. reissue comes in clear with brown splatter vinyl housed inside an inner sleeve sporting lyrics!

EXPERIENCE AND JUDGMENT STREET DATE: AUGUST 5, 2022 Crate diggers have long dug this 1973 soul jazz classic on the Atlantic label… it’s far more than your usual jazz vocal record. Vocalist/pianist Andy Bey imbues every number here with a spiritual depth and soulful intensity, yet Experience and Judgment is a relaxing, uplifting listen reminiscent of Bill Withers or Roy Ayers. Some credit for this album’s unique vibe must also be given to producer William S. “Bill” Fischer (Eugene McDaniels, Herbie Mann), who composes a couple tunes here and lends his distinctive touch on keyboards. Whether your taste in jazz runs to free, funk, or even quiet storm, Experience and Judgment delivers. Reissued in Sea Blue vinyl to match the album cover and the mood…limited to 1000 copies!

GAVIN DeGRAW: Chariot (Teal Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: AUGUST 5, 2022 This prodigiously talented piano man came out of the New York club scene with a brash, rocking sound that drew obvious comparisons to Billy Joel and Elton John, but some more contemporary touches also brought peers like Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley and J label-mates Maroon 5 to mind. It’s an artful blend— leavened with a little classic R&B— that clicked commercially, as Gavin’s 2003 debut album Chariot went Platinum and spawned several hit singles including the Top Ten hit (and One Tree Hill theme song) “I Don’t Want to Be.” Our first vinyl pressing of Chariot sold out immediately, so we’ve pressed up more platters in beautiful teal vinyl and put ‘em inside a printed inner sleeve with lyrics. (Limited 2-LP Purple Vinyl Edition)

The biggest British psych find of the century! Think that’s hyperbole? Well, of the 24 tracks on this collection, the only two to be previously issued on vinyl, “Beeside” b/w “Vacuum Cleaner,” comprise probably the rarest and most highly prized single (Deram DM 164) in ‘60s British rock, an original copy having sold for as much as $1600! (And with good reason…the guitar solo on “Vacuum Cleaner” set a new standard for mod-psych feedback freakout.) Indeed, that single was the only recording officially released by Tintern Abbey, and only a small handful of skeletal demos have leaked out since; yet, their legend persists some 55 years later. Now, after two decades of planning, research, tape transfer and sound restoration, the full story of Tintern Abbey can at last be told. The 2-LP set Beeside—The Anthology unearths 24 tracks of music recorded by Tintern Abbey between the summer of 1967 (when they spent a month in a Cornwall cottage, rehearsing and taping their performances prior to their London launch) and the end of 1968. Alongside that genre-defining Deram single and those previously-leaked demos are some astonishing treasures. Among the highlights: the intended late 1967 follow-up 45 “Snowman” (a disorientating melange of sinister Mellotron, disembodied voices and backward tapes that was abandoned when original guitarist Don Smith left the group); the Arabicsounding “My Prayer,” and the SF Sorrow-anticipating “Let The Wind Blow,” along with late 1968 creations like “Raspberry Ripple,” “Life Goes By,” and “My House,” suggesting that, even at the point of their collapse, Tintern Abbey remained a vital, vibrant unit. The package features a 4-page insert boasting a comprehensive essay with band quotes and previously unpublished photos and memorabilia tucked inside a beautiful gatefold jacket containing a purple vinyl pressing limited to 1500 copies worldwide. This lovingly-assembled 2-LP set is the final word on a group that turned out to be as mysterious and elusive as the Wordsworth poem that inspired their name.

TOMMY WOMACK

THIRTY YEARS SHOT TO HELL: A TOMMY WOMACK ANTHOLOGY

08/05/2022 Tommy Womack is as honest as the day is hard, possessed of a Mark Twain-on-Xanax wit, a Bob Dylan sense of absurdity, a Kentucky-bred humility, a short but sweet attention span, and a spirit that endears him to the most talented people in America’s most talented town, Nashville. Like my favorite vinyl record, Tommy’s scratched, worn, and a little warped, and he warms the house with agitated beauty.

We can’t know what it’s like to write songs beloved by John Prine, David Olney, Todd Snider, John Hiatt, Will Kimbrough, Jimmy Buffett, and Jason Ringenberg. We don’t share Tommy’s brilliance and we can’t conjure his bizarro humor. We don’t write the saddest funny songs anyone has ever heard, or the funniest sad songs on the planet. What makes him unique is what makes him communal. Just like us, he’s a twit and a triumph. He proclaims his inherent and inerrant immortality in “Cockroach After the Bomb” but, in a half-smiling spit, says, “You can’t kill me, I’m already dead.” He accedes to his limitations in “I’m Never Gonna Be a Rock Star” in envy and grudging acceptance, before offering a chin-to-chest admission, “There, I said it.” But then he asks, as all of us do and most of us maybe shouldn’t, “Where’s my catharsis?” Give a dog a bone, for Chrissake. Look up “twit,” and you’ll confirm that it means “a silly or foolish person.” And he is. And we are. Tommy is here to tell us that. But, on Antonym Day, “twit” means a prescient or brilliant person. And he is. And you are. Tommy’s here to tell us that. And Tommy’s songs explain all of this better than most anything that can be conjured.

Each dawning brings Synonym and Antonym Day. Each morning brings canvasses smudged but malleable. Tommy is here to clean our brushes, to forgive us our trespasses, to celebrate Fish Stick Day, to sing about the regress of progress, and to shed Smokey Robinson’s tears of a clown. Tommy’s fellow Kentuckian, Tom T. Hall, wrote about “A hairy-legged soul lost out in sin.” We’re all, regardless of personal grooming habits, hairy-legged souls. For the past thirty years, Tommy Womack has stumbled upon us all out in sin. And he’s offered understanding and clarity, a hug, a nod, a melody, and a goofy-ass smile. I wouldn’t want to face tomorrow without him. He feels the same about us.

“Living as a queer, androgynous person, I have always seen the world beyond the binary.” That’s Kyle Kidd (all pronouns) talking about their debut solo album, Soothsayer. “Those who came before me,” they say, “were deeply connected through spirituality, with the gift to see the future wielded through the powers of ritual.” Kidd titled the album Soothsayer on the basis of this ancestral background. But the title doesn’t just reference a term, it clarifies what the album is: an expansive rendering of life beyond the binary, balancing self-possession and self-preservation, the challenges of vulnerability and the redemptive possibilities of love -- all in a half-hour.

RIYL: Sylvester, Moses Sumney, KeiyaA, Chaka Kahn File under: R&B editions of American Idol, broadening their scope as a member with acclaimed Cleveland band Mourning [A] BLKstar. One might expect confidence from a singer with this resume, and Kidd delivers right out of the gate with the atmospheric “Salvation,” their voice easily swelling into the eaves of their register, one-and-a-half octaves above middle C. It’s one of two percussionless numbers on the album, supported instead by ripples of synth ( Jah Nada) and guitar (Smith Taylor, Marcus Alan Ward). These instruments provide a foundation for Kidd’s vocal runs, with subtle changes providing big mood shifts. On the simmering slow burn of “Temple,” they’re joined by drums (Red Tailed Hawk Luna, Neil Chastain); elsewhere, brass, woodwinds, harp, violin. Throughout, there’s a sense of Kidd pushing against the edges of soul, electronic, and experimental sensibilities, bolstered by a slew of Cleveland- and Midwest-based musicians.

love pursuit, but also the need to survive and affirm: Lead single “TMS,” a deep, kinetic nugget that nods to house and techno traditions, exemplifies Kidd’s desire to celebrate themself, their identity, their drive, and their community, singing “I’m living in the moment, I’m living forever, I’m right on time.” But though the catchy outcome is hopeful and joyous, the place it came from is personal, perspective-shifting, and very, very real. “In the time of writing this album,” Kidd explains, “I was battling the reality of my need to be defined by my old scars. The experience revealed that each moment I have overcome has in fact been an initiation of my becoming.”

To hear Kidd’s voice is to hear majesty: dynamic, virtuosic, evocative, and - frankly - hard to believe. On the moving, pleading opener “Salvation,” Kidd rockets to sublime heights with the divine energy of a holy spirit visitation. Perhaps this is no surprise given Kidd’s performance history. After performing in church choir and community theater A sense of urgency permeates Soothsayer, as a child, she competed on several the result of Kidd’s conscientious self-

Soothsayer is the result of that process, a burst of alchemical sparks equally at home on the dancefloor, on a turntable or in a concert hall. It’s not just the start of a new chapter, not just a sonic diary of the travails of love: “This album tells the story of longing to be saved, and realizing instead that salvation is in the deep work of self-love.” Kidd says. “It is divine. It is a vision of the future.”

Their debut, Gold Arc, finds the Baltimore quartet playing with tension between sweetness and destructive heaviness. Conceptually, Gold Arc hungers for an alternate reality, a sustainable paradise, and the desire to be loved constantly. Tomato Flower turns that utopian impulse towards the worldly on the B-side of this tape, Construction. A sister EP to Gold Arc, this set of dense, knotted pop songs are intricate constructions of their own. The music evokes something sculptural, reflecting the painstaking social processes of material transformation that create physical objects, or coalesces as a monumental abstraction cutting into the skyline. Much of the music came together in the peak days of COVID isolation during long days on the top floor of Austyn Wohlers and Jamison Murphy’s rowhouse, overlooking aging Baltimore architecture. As a group of self-professed psychedelic nerds, the band used this time of uncertainty to stretch the limits of both study and play. The process of composing this music combined a spirit of academic rigor and intense experimentation as they holed up and crafted pristine jewels of rock music. KAL MARKS My Name Is Hell 8.5.2022

Release Information: EIS120 Genre: Rock, Indie (Heavy) Configuration: LP Street Date: 8.5.2022 Vinyl UPC: 634457081826 Vinyl Box Lot: 50 Key Markets: New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia About: From the first notes of the album opener, “My

Life Is A Freak Show,” there’s something distinctly different about this version of Kal Marks. While Carl Shane still sounds like himself, he allows his voice to sit front and center without any adornments. His vocals appear more human and vulnerable, which matches the band’s new musical trajectory perfectly. Of course, Shane still kicks in screams that shake the speakers, but he sounds less like a monster and more like a person exorcising their demons. From track to track on My Name Is Hell, the lyrics tackle everything from losing friends, religion’s toxic touch, the crushing weight of debt, the monotony of the suburbs, and the disgusting nature of the human race. Much like he needed his band to be torn down to build this new version of it, Shane’s songs never give the sense that he’s wallowing in these subjects. Instead, he’s trying to make sense of them and find some peace throughout that journey. By plumbing the depths of his anger, frustration, and sadness, My Name Is Hell admits that we’re all a little scared, angry, and confused, but we’re still trying to navigate the world the best we can.

OVERVIEW

The first signing on Is it Jazz? Records, the new sub-label of Karisma Records, is the Norwegian instrumental quartet Soft Ffog. And what a perfect first signing for a prog rock label going into vast and scary jazz territory. As the band says themselves:

Ever wondered what it would sound like if Jimi Hendrix joined Deep Purple pursuing to sound like Gentle Giant, and then failing miserably because of too much jazz consumption lately? Didn’t think so, but anyhow Soft Ffog´s sound is unique, and draws parallels to the aforementioned acts in somewhat style, compositions and aesthetic, but is more rooted in jazz with their prolonged solos and improvisations. Soft Ffog started as one-off gig commissioned by Kongsberg Jazzfestival in 2016. Despite the success of this event, the band did not get the momentum it needed to be a proper working band. This combined with the busy schedules for the musicians in other bands and projects, the band only played gigs every now and then. These gigs did help refining their sound, so bandleader Tom Hasslan decided in 2020 that the time was right to record their first album with all Hasslan compositions. The band consists of band leader Tom Hasslan (Krokofant) on guitars, Axel Skalstad (Krokofant) on drums, Trond Frønes (Red Kite, Grand General) on bass and Vegard Lien Bjerkan (WIZRD) on keyboards. The album was recorded at Studio Paradiso with Christian Engfelt as engineer and producer. The combined members of Soft Ffog have probably played with everyone in the Norwegian jazz scene, but here they do their own thing and they’re combining the sounds from King Crimson with Terje Rypdal, Deep Purple with Pat Metheny, and it sounds awesome! Beware of blistering guitar solos, gnarly bass, crazy drums and supersonic keyboard playing! Selling points:

CRAZY P Age Of The Ego (Remixes) Affirming their status as dedicated tastemakers, Crazy P call on some of their favourite producers, and deliver 12 immaculate remixes of their beloved 2019 album, ‘Age Of The Ego’ A cosmic, vibe heavy, and eclectic journey through low-slung, groovy balearic, big room disco, deep house, lo-fi, and beyond with artists Crazy P have admired, and friends encountered along the way. Gerd Janson’s 80’s italo-esque remix of ‘We Will F**k You Up’ kicks things off full throttle as a debut digital single on June 8th. Other focal tracks come from Medlar ft Dele Sosimi who provide a hip-swinging rendition of 'The Witness’. Hot Toddy (Crazy P’s Chris Todd) ups the ante for the dancefloor on ‘Love is With You’ whilst retaining the lushness and the sentiment of the original, and other Crazy P co-founder James Baron aka Ron Basejam delivers a disco stomping four to the floor rendition of ‘Is This All That It Seems’. Another stand out contribution comes from the late Soulphiction who sadly passed between submitting his remix and its release. His bass-heavy take on 'Barefooted' is a roller-boogie funk jam, heavy on the bass on congas, guaranteed to make you shimmy.

Crazy P - “The very sadly missed Soulphiction. We’ve been huge fans of his work over the years and it’s an honor to have a truly authentic remix from him” ‘Age Of The Ego’ is a very dear album to Crazy P. “We poured a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this baby, so we were keen to get the remix package right with the help of some very talented producers! DJ Nature, a king of the underground, injects a whole new boldness into ‘SOS’ with a kick drum that launches you into space. Mancunian/Salfordian collective See Thru Hands infuse a fresh, deep durgy rock disco sound. Iliya Rudman has an inimitable style, the simplicity of his remix is key to its beauty. We knew James Welsh would give us some toughness and he certainly delivered with aplomb on ‘This Fire’. Something Sanctified’s analog drenched house productions we’ve loved over the years, and the duo have stripped this mix right back, the vocoder bit on the end is well worth the wait!” The appetite for Crazy P’s supremely fun and exquisite live and DJ performances is still high, continuing to leave their mark on the landscape of British dance music with a relentless tour schedule in 2022, laying down Age Of The Ego’s original material and remixes all summer.

Vacant Gardens Clear vinyl LP editions of 500 copies each Vacant Gardens is Glenn Donaldson (of The Reds, Pinks and Purples and a hundred others) and Jem Fanvu, collaborating on music and with the latter responsible for vocals and lyrics. The project began with the idea of combining heavy fuzz and slow-mo drum machine beats with Fanvu's gentle almost trad-folk style vocals. Almost all of Donaldson's otherworldly sounds are achieved through layers of guitar fuzz and copious delay, while Fanvu offers an ideal counterpoint, taking the listener on a celestial melancholy trip with her opaque poetry and melodies. So inspired were the duo by this blend of styles, they immediately recorded at least two albums of material, Under the Bloom and Obscene, released in quick succession in 2020 and 2021 in swiftly-disappearing micro editions on the secretive Tall Texan label. With those records close-toimpossible to find at an affordable price, Tough Love now reissue both.

Producer Hudson Mohawke shares his third album ‘Cry Sugar’ on Warp Records. The album draws from sublets of electronic and hip-hop, rearranging them into something entirely unpredictable. Comprised of 19 tracks, the album synthesizes a wide range of influences reminiscent of trap, acid, and avant-pop paired with gospel, garage, and processed vocal samples. It is a journey through a chaotic and celestial narrative that ties itself back to the ground with control and precise sonic detail.

The album was released the same year as Snakehips Etcetera and finds the same six-piece line-up. Nucleus was performing live and recording with so much frequency that Alleycat has a live recording feel.

CIGARETTES AFTER SEX

Title:

CIGARETTES AFTER SEX

STREETDATE: AUGUST 12TH 2022 OVERVIEW To celebrate the 5th anniversary of its release we are pressing a limited edition of this stunning debut album on crystal clear vinyl. The music of Cigarettes After Sex invokes not only the powerful feelings of euphoria inherent in the band’s name itself, but somehow manages to recreate emotions found in the most romantic of movies; immersive, achingly nostalgic, thoroughly transporting, and intensely visual. It’s these powerful and unique qualities which have enabled the love songs of Cigarettes After Sex to reverberate across countless countries, and excite the most devoted kind of following. After the phenomenal online break-out success of “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” the singer, guitarist, and creator of Cigarettes After Sex, Greg Gonzalez, wanted to project his worldview onto a bigger screen, a broader canvas. Yet Gonzalez rejected conventional studio routes for his band, which includes Randy Miller on bass and Jacob Tomsky on drums. They recorded their self-titled debut album during a remarkably short, three-day stint at a modest pay-by-the-hour rehearsal space in Brooklyn. It’s this bottled intensity, and perfect cohesion between musical landscape and lyrics, which keeps listeners, falling in and out of love themselves, thoroughly enraptured, returning to the music again and again; the love songs of Cigarettes After Sex the indelible soundtrack. Phantoms This Can’t Be Everything Release Date: August 12, 2022 Phantoms, comprised of Los Angeles based Kyle Kaplan & Vinnie Pergola, are a live electronic act that does exactly that. Often tough to box in, their electronic style is best described as blurring the lines of house & indie-dance. Incorporating distinctive synth and drum patterns, the duo have become synonymous with their genre of alternative electronic. Launching in 2016 with debut EP Broken Halo, the duo were quickly signed to Republic/Casablanca, releasing their eponymous debut album the following year. Phantoms featured the chart topping 'Just A Feeling (ft Verite)', clinching #1 spots on US Dance Radio for 4 straight weeks, iTunes electronic chart and sitting atop the SiriusXM / BPM Top 20 countdown for over 8 weeks. 2022 sees them take a new approach to their music following monumental life changes and through those experiences have created some of their most dynamic and transcendent music to date. The two were officially signed to Foreign Family collective this year, founded by electronic giant ODESZA and since have had the freedom to explore new and exciting creative avenues with their music. Applauded by NPR, Billboard, Stereogum, Dancing Astronaut and many others, and over 125 million streams across platforms, the duo has solidified themselves as one of the most promising acts entering 2022, with lots more on the horizon. Phantoms new album This Can’t Be Everything will be released on August 12th, 2022 via Foreign Family Collective.

M.Ward's second solo enterprise verifies the artist as one of those few songwriters who stand between the cracks of time, where he spins a hallucinatory, new universe out of old-world roots. Indeed, there's a real down-home, unpolished luster to End of Amnesia, both in execution and in songwriting, that gives it a timeless, old-fashioned pallor. And yet there's also something just slightly off in the songs, a strange, disembodied quality that seems to come at least partly from an ulterior place, be it real or imagined. That attribute is precisely what gives the music such a singular, distinctive sound and vision.

American Dreams Records CLAUDE A LOT’S GONNA CHANGE 1) twenty something 2) roses 3) what are you on tonight 4) turn

5) claustrophobia 6) meet me 7) i think i’ll pass tonight 8) oh, to be

“This album is a snapshot of my early-to-mid twenties — formative, sometimes confusing years.” That’s Chicago singer-songwriter Claudia Ferme, AKA Claude, on her debut album, a lot’s gonna change. For years she’s tinkered away, self-releasing a 12” EP titled Enactor in 2021, and playing shows across the city. Her first full-length has been a long time in the making, with sketches of ditties happening as early as 2017. Since then, she’s refined her craft — words, melodies, and sound — crystallizing in this collection, buttressed by woozy, lush production from Windy City wunderkind Michael Mac (Tasha, Devin Shaffer, Mia Joy). It’s an evocative, relatable assemblage, detailing the peaks and pitfalls of early adult life, all the while maintaining a sense of humor, a bit of hope, and piles of earworms.

RIYL: Mia Joy, Bnny, Devin Shaffer, Claud File under: Indie, Pop

Writing a lot’s gonna change was straightforward. Where Claude’s past music was built on intentionally constructed worlds, lacing social commentary within pop constraints, a lot’s gonna change is both introspective and expansive, rooted in real-life experience while crossing new musical territory. Claude relies on intuition to write: “I don’t like sitting and thinking, like, today I’m gonna write a song! It has to come naturally.” a lot’s gonna change incorporates many modes of pop music, making for a dynamic, invigorating listen. “Pop can encompass a lot,” Claude says, “and I like that: song structures that are even and catchy; even if the songs aren’t fast-paced, stuff sticks in your mind.” On “roses,” Claude’s winding vocal melody traces the evolution of a perspective change with floral synths and spiky American Dreams Records Release date: 8/12/2022 Cat. #: 52 ADR LP: 727431748430 Box lot of 30

percussion. She explains: “the way we torture ourselves or are not very kind to ourselves, and how that manifests in certain situations we’re in. Going through something and realizing, maybe I’m not the person that I thought I was.” Elsewhere, lush arrangements adorn “twenty something” (I’d rather be hurt by my own doing / than be let down by someone else / At least that’s what I tell myself”), “claustrophobia,” and “meet me,” songs that track anxiety, hope, and emotional distance. Your twenties are hard. It’s the first decade you’re expected to be an adult, and often the decade where you first establish your own priorities. It’s where you do a whole lot of growth, too, and on a lot’s gonna change, this maturation can be witnessed in both the words and sonics. Rarely do growing pains sound so sweet. Selling Points: Production by Michael Mac (Tasha, Devin Shaffer, Mia Joy). PR and radio via Clandestine Label Services. Debut LP from Chicago songwriter.

PIERCE TURNER TERRIBLE GOOD An Irish-American musician in the truest, and most literal, sense, Pierce Turner lives half the year in his hometown of Wexford, Ireland, and the other half in his longtime adopted hometown of New York City. Both places are reflected in his songs, which frequently move between these two different worlds, linked through his keen observations and ruminations. His music expresses a duality too, sliding between the earthly and the ethereal, the miraculous and the mundane, the pure and profane. And it’s present in the title of his thirteenth and latest album, Terrible Good. Turner loves the way the phrase’s meaning gets twisted by using “a negative out of context with the positive.” Terrible Good, featuring producer and guitarist Gerry Leonard (David Bowie), bassist Tony Shanahan (Patti Smith) and drummer Yuval Lion (David Byrne), is an edgy guitar album that forges an extraordinary alloy of 70’s downtown New York punk and Irish alternative rock. There are nine originals and a cover of Tom Rapp’s (Pearls Before Swine) “Rocket Man.” Somehow pounding and soaring at the same time, the songs soulfully testify to the awful and awesome everyday, the human predicament – It’s Terrible Good.

“New York’s hidden gem.”—New York Magazine “Easily one of the most important Irish artists of the last twenty years.” —The Irish Times “Turner has created the finest body of work in contemporary Irish music, bar none.” —The Sunday Times Solo Performer of the Year and Maverick of the Year.—Hot Press Magazine

Lea Bertucci ‘Metal Aether / Resonant Field’ A repressing of two critically acclaimed, previously out-of-print albums, presented in a beautiful double-LP gatefold package Metal Aether continues to explore Lea’s acute interest in the nature of acoustics and the harmonic accumulation of sound, with it’s four pieces having been recorded in Le Havre, France in a former military base, and in New York City, at ISSUE Project Room. With her horn, Lea produces pulsing minimalist patterns, transcendent drones, and upper register squalls that envelop these spaces in waves of overtones, microtones, and psychoacoustic effects.

Metal Aether feels like the defining statement from an artist in elevated control of their form - a summary of concepts, ideas, and emotions given life from one’s mind and heart. Lea demonstrates the desirable ability to use her art to sincerely communicate in a language of one’s own personal invention, utilizing music and sound for their most meaningful and human purposes.

Resonant Field, from New York-based sound artist and composer Lea Bertucci, follows up her critically acclaimed 2018 NNA full-length Metal Aether, Lea continues her devotion to the exploration of physical spaces by way of sound, channeled through her alto saxophone. Where her previous work investigated a variety of locations around the globe, Resonant Field narrows her focus to one space in particular - the Marine A Grain Elevator at Silo City in Buffalo, New York. This formation of an intimate connection with her surroundings is both scientific and spiritual, putting Lea in a duality of roles as both an archaeologist of sound and as a sonic medium. The fact that these recordings took place during the partial solar eclipse of 2017 further contributes to the ceremonial, ritual quality

TLV156EP

5055869548816

Limited Cream vinyl 12” (750 copies pressed). Recorded late 2021 between Preston and Bristol, ‘Are You’ weaves together a mixture of intuitive home recordings and refined studio production aided by producer Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Portishead, Perfume Genius). The four songs on the EP are an intentional collection of contrasts and paradoxes - beauty and repulsion, calmness and mania, anxiety and stasis - all combined to form a balanced whole. Whilst influenced in part by the writings of the late Mark Fisher and his idea that we are haunted by futures that failed to happen, that what might have been may yet be the dream that saves us, White Flowers have also found inspiration in the Brutalist architecture that adorns their hometown - futuristic yet dated buildings that serve as an appropriate visual metaphor for Fisher’s theories. Bleakly imposing yet comfortingly familiar, the monochromatic starkness of these structures has fed into the imagery for the record, as well as the sounds found within. Not intending to wallow in cynicism, however, White Flowers’ art ultimately aims to provide a way out of these dystopian fever dreams and spiralling thoughts into a forward facing place. 1.
