Launched in 2001, ‘Late Night Tales’ has been inviting internationally recognised artists, to curate and mix all their favourite “home listening” and musically inspiring tracks, together with an exclusive cover recording of an all-time -favourite song. For our 46th album in the series, Canadian quartet BADBADNOTGOOD take on creating the ultimate “late night” selection of tracks from their record collections, set for release on 28th July 2017. A shared appreciation of hip hop and instrumental covers of Gucci Mane and Earl Sweatshirt suggested a worldly outlook from the band, and reciprocated love from Tyler The Creator and Ghostface Killah, which whom they made 2015’s Sour Soul. “We were really excited to have the chance to put together a Late Night Tales compilation, it’s a great organisation. Every track on this comp was either shown to us by an incredible person or made by one of our friends. 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS – WHY THEY ARE REVERED: eaturing the yelping vocals and visionary, occasionally demented lyrics of Roky Erickson, the 13th Floor Elevators were one of the original acid rock bands. Formed in Texas in the mid-’60s, the Elevators started as a garage rock outfit, scoring their one and only modest national hit with “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” While Erickson’s loopy persona and Tommy Hall’s odd “jug” percussion were the band’s most distinguishing features, several members of the group’s original lineup contributed strong material to their albums. Trips to San Francisco established the group as an up-and-coming underground favorite, but Erickson’s problems with drugs and the police led to the singer’s commission to a state mental hospital in the late ’60s, an ordeal from which he has never fully recovered.

Mark Fosson’s been playing music for nearly 50 years now. Solo Guitar is the 5th album released under his name in all that time, which gives an insight into the nature of his music; when it is time for Mark to commit to something underneath his fingers, regardless of whether that is after two years, ten or twenty, that’s what’s right. Sure, it makes for a funny career arc, but as far as the music that falls out of a guitar over the span of a lifetime is concerned, any old curve will serve. Mark’s picking career was destined to be weird anyway, based on how it started: in 1976, a demo sent to “American Primitive” label Takoma Records received a personal response from founder (and its primary artist) John Fahey himself, who invited Mark out to the west coast to rerecord the material for forthcoming release. Mark showed up, they recorded, it sounded great . . . then Takoma went bankrupt, John Fahey sold the whole company and the release of Mark’s record was abruptly cancelled. No new destination for the recordings immediately presented itself, so Mark moved on, eventually making music with a band called The Bum Steers and writing songs for motion pictures as well. Once the tapes from ’77 came to the attention of his niece, Tiffany Anders (she noticed them sitting out in his garage), things started happening fast. We put The Lost Takoma Sessions out in 2006, after which Mark made a full-band album of rockin’ Americana called Jesus On a Greyhound. In 2012, Tompkins Square released the original demos for the Lost Takoma record as Digging In the Dust. Solo Guitar shares something with kY, as Mark continues to use his chops and enthusiasm to wander musically, drawing up pieces of sparkling, nimble fingerstyle with an eclectic vision. As the title implies, this time Mark is focused on the austerity of the guitar, plain and simple, to bring out the music. Whether on six- or twelve-string, his sure touch is transported by crystal-clear recordings that belie their down-home origins, as they catch the contours of every string as it is pressed, bent and struck — a full-bodied sound projecting soulful dips down into bass strings and shimmering upper register runs with equal power. The air around these performances is colored with curving waves of steelstringed beauty, and the pungency of free-wheeling wit and recollection. The songs are from all over the place. Mark opens with an evocation of 40’s film actor Rondo Hatton’s turn as “The Creeper,” then slides into a series of personal reminiscences, finger exercises, improvisations and impressions, remembering an old yard cat or an afternoon walk, flashing briskly through moods and moments before landing finally on “Still Ain’t Got No Home,” a song he wrote when returning east from his long sojourn in California. The bristling, fluent action around the neck on this one evokes a traveling energy, motoring down the road in a way that never really ends. This is one of Mark’s favorites of all that he’s written, and it is clear why: the golden, eternal promise of the guitar is ebulliently, transcendently delivered. AMERICA EXPORT OK) TRACK LISTING: As the duo Golden Retriever, Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff have explored an ocean’s worth of sound. Primarily working at the intersection of modular synthesis and amplified/effected bass clarinet, the duo has done eight releases for labels like Thrill Jockey, Root Strata, and NNA Tapes. Their music combines an intense emotional immediacy and meditative focus with strong melodicism and an organic, naturalistic approach to experimental electronic sound. Rotations features the duo expanding their sonic palette to incorporate a full chamber ensemble. The results of this stunning collaboration are meditative, lush, and emotionally arresting. Rotations began when Golden Retriever received a grant from Portland’s Regional Arts & Culture Council to organize and perform new works. The public performances took place in October of 2015 at Portland’s historic The Old Church. For the performances, Golden Retriever created a series of pieces for an ensemble that included strings, wind instruments, percussion, and pipe organ, which became the foundation on which Rotations was built. While their duo recordings and performances are typically developed from studio improvisations that evolve into specific musical structures, in this case Golden Retriever began with simple acoustic compositions, improvisations and fragmented ideas between bass clarinet and piano and used them to develop melodic and harmonic themes. After adding more layers and transcribing the various parts into notation for a chamber ensemble the final result of their collaging process gives an effect that Golden Retriever are playing the ensemble as their instrument, and through careful arrangements, have obscured the lines between improvisation and composition.

Through the course of the creative process of choosing, editing and arranging the pieces, the duo saw a clear theme: a meditation on the cyclical nature of life and more specifically on going through something very difficult but emerging on the other side of it with hope. Pieces such as “Pelagic Tremor” tell the story of a tumultuous seascape, stormy and churning. “Tessellation” weaves a tapestry of overlapping patterns that are impenetrable and sifting. In contrast, the sounds of “A Kind of Leaving” (whose title is a reference to a Bei Dao poem) evokes more quiet and contemplative imagery, and “Thread of Light” is perhaps Golden Retriever’s most minimal piece to date, finding beauty in simplicity. Within each piece, the instruments cycle rhythmically, harmonically, and texturally with one another. The album itself has a cycle made up the ebb and flow of each piece that is both pleasing and unexpected.

Rotations was recorded throughout September and October 2015 by Matt Carlson with help from Branic Howrd of Open Field Recording. JUPITER & OKWESS : Kin Sonic With their second album Kin Sonic, Jupiter and Okwess transcend the Congo’s unexplored musical heritage and dive into a pool of modernity. We’re invited to savour his latest recipe, the Okwess (‘food’ in the Kibunda language) which is the fruit of all the encounters and influences he has absorbed during his many journeys around the world. It’s a recipe based on perfect alchemy, enriched by contributions from Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, violinist Warren Ellis of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, and Montana (of Congolese legends Staff Benda Bilili). Jean-Pierre Bokondji, aka ‘Jupiter’ (the nickname has since become his official first name), was born in Kinshasa on the 16th December 1963, three years after the Congo was given its independence. He spent a large part of his childhood and adolescence living in Dar-es-Salam in Tanzania and East Berlin, where his father worked as an attaché at the Congolese embassy. Growing up in Germany, Jupiter listened to the best American soul: James Brown, The Jackson 5, The Temptations and Kool and the Gang. Then, back in the Congo, he discovered the ultra-dominant Congolese rumba style, but also a multitude of other rhythms and styles that vegetate in the shadows of rumba, all strangely reminiscent of funk, soul and rock. With the spark provided by this apparent complicity between Congolese traditions and Western music, Jupiter decided to create his own mode of musical expression. This album, now receiving a worldwide release for the first time, is being issued on Hux Records with the full approval of Mike Westbrook, who has written the liner note and provided the band photograph for the cover booklet. This CD has been remastered by Jon Hiseman of Colosseum.
As Mike Westbrook recalls in his liner note for this CD booklet, this band only existed for a few weeks at the beginning of 1972. By the time of his studio album, Solid Gold Cadillac, his band personnel had changed.

Dickey Lee, like so many country singers of the 1960s, came to Nashville after a career in pop and rock’n’roll music. He travelled a similar road as Conway Twitty and Jerry Lee Lewis, beginning his recording career in the mid-1950s at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. Throughout the 1970s Dickey Lee was a near fixture on the American country charts, chalking up an impressive 29 entries. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1995. Dickey Lee is the composer of the country classic, She Thinks I Still Care, (included here) which has been famously covered by George Jones, Elvis Presley, Connie Francis and many others. This CD features Dickey Lee’s first two Country music LPs, which were originally released in 1971 and 1972 on the RCA label. Suicideyear AKA James Prudhomme hails from the home of No Limit records - Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His music is very much a product of his environment – the menacing sound of tuned 808 drums coupled with angst-ridden emotive synth work – inspired by listening to shoegaze and punk bands throughout his formative teenage years. The dense compositions of Brooklyn-based trio Kill Alters crash into you as a glorious mess of hyperactive vocal lines, pulsing electronic textures, and interwoven percussion patterns. No Self Helps, their first release on Hausu Mountain,
speeds through a dizzying array of “noise”/”rock” anthems and found sound collage pieces that paint the band in all their idiosyncrasies as winking masters of transportive heavy music. Bonnie Baxter jumps at center stage with mic in hand, screeching, chanting, crooning, and otherwise pouring out her soul. As her wildly diverse vocal performances flit between moods and styles on a dime, she commands a choir of alternate personalities waiting to overtake each other for turns in the spotlight. Drummer Hisham Bharoocha, a veteran of the underground circuit as a member of groups like Black Dice, Lightning Bolt, and Boredoms’ touring ensemble, provides Kill Alters’ pummeling rhythmic backbone. His manic tom rolls, tight kick drum grooves, and tumbling snare cascades interweave with programmed percussion and synth lines. Nicos Kennedy drapes layers of squalling synth texture and disfigured noise into the mix from a hybrid arsenal of analog and digital machines, assuming the role of the wild card as much as the meticulous onstage producer. The composite electronic/acoustic rhythms of No Self Helps swerve in tandem between plodding industrial bursts and fractured funk workouts, stopping only to segue through recorded bits of Baxter’s past that pop up as collaged memories within the din.
Far from the trope of the misanthropic noise band that takes their image dead seriously, Kill Alters brings a sense of Artist: Kill Alters humor and childlike play to counteract their massive sonics.
