THE LAST GOODBYE NINJA TUNE

Redeye Label of the Month:

GET BETTER RECORDS

FLORIST | THE SADIES | TY SEGALL

Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Alex Lichtenauer at Get Better Records

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? GBR is a community-driven label, so it’s word of mouth or the record store! And every now and then, we get a submission that changes our lives, much like ZORA’s album, Z1, or Alien Boy’s record Don’t Know What I Am. And in some cases, we get to revisit older music through reissuing records like Fucked Up’s first LP, Epics in Minutes, or sharing unreleased material from Ted Leo. When and where did the label begin? Keene, NH - 2009. Since then, we’ve released music from all over the so-called United States and Canada while also working with artists from the UK. We’re excited to continue connecting with people all around the world. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Originally named after Lemuria’s album “Get Better” but evolved into self-determination and to always be open to criticism and striving to “get better”. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We are a queer/trans artist-run label. Alex (Control Top) and Koji (who makes music as “KOJI”) both handle A&R and manage the label. Abby (formerly of Potty Mouth) works on art and socials, and Jordan does PR. Together, we partner with our artists to create campaigns to platform their amazing work. How has the label changed since it started? As queer and trans people have become more visible, so has the label. We are working to build a world where queer and trans people get the support, care, and attention they deserve all year round - not just on month that has been co-opted by police and credit card companies. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? The instability and lack of touring has impacted all of us in the music industry, and we are no different. So many of our artists have been affected by COVID, and the effects go far beyond canceled shows; some losing loved ones or having long term health issues. All of the COVID issues compound with and point to the rising tide of anti-trans legislation, forced birth, forever war, police violence, and corporate looting. It’s a challenging time to be alive, let alone make records. These issues disproportionately affect our artists and audience, many of whom are LGBTQIA+, racialized, diasporic, etc. With all that to say, we have seen tremendous support and growth from the indie retail side, for which we are so grateful. It’s been life-changing. Record stores and venues are places we longed to be during quarantine. We don’t take those spaces and the respite they provide for granted.

We’re huge fans of the new Soul Glo, Turnstile, SASAMI, serpentwithfeet, Orville Peck, Indigo De Souza, Sudan Archives, Boy Harsher, Charlotte Adigéry & Boris Pupul. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Get Better Records doesn’t have a sound - we’ve got a feeling. And we hope to transcend genre and break down barriers and binaries that genre has often enforced. We are proud to work with artists who are grounded in who they are and their communities while also having the highest level of craft. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? GBR started with CDs and cassettes, and those formats have never left our rotation. In fact, we’ve seen a shift back towards those formats making physical music more accessible. Our team doesn’t just collect; we listen to cassettes and CDs and cherish them as much as vinyl. It’s important that vinyl not be a benchmark for legitimizing artists. All ways of listening to music are valid. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Our core audience is the LGBTQIA+ community, but it by no means stops there. We have so many listeners and accomplices of such diverse identities, which really speaks to the power of music to bring people together. We think that music has a more urgent role to play in society now more than ever. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Mental health is a social justice issue and, in turn, is an intersectional issue. Our values are our foundation, and we work very hard to bring intention and care in all the things we do, which may be too nuanced for the old industry. Everyone in music must challenge the old ways of working because the same oppression that takes place in society is reflected in every space of music. We never stop dreaming of a liberated world. We will never stop working towards it. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Get Better Records was a part of making music that was the soundtrack to the revolution, and they did it with joy.

After releasing their critically-acclaimed debut album Honeymoon, Beach Bunny performed their hit single “Cloud 9” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “Cloud 9” spent 7 consecutive weeks on the Spotify Global Viral 50 chart earning more than 2 million streams per day with over 250 million total streams. The song spent 4 consecutive weeks at radio as #5 Most Added at Alt and 3 weeks at #1 on Sirius XMU, and reached top 25 at Alternative radio. This summer, their highly-anticipated sophomore album “Emotional Creature” will be released followed by a string of festivals and global headline dates. As lockdown approached in 2020, Chicago-based singer Lili Trifilio was wrapping up a tour in support of Beach Bunny’s debut album, Honeymoon. Suddenly, she found herself back at her parents’ house, coping with her new reality. To deal, she retreated into sci-fi stories and her always-active imagination. She envisioned new places to travel in her mind, thus dreaming up big, bombastic pop sounds to construct Beach Bunny’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Emotional Creature. Simultaneously about personal growth, Emotional Creature is a collection of highly relatable songs that capture the highs and lows of new relationships, the joys and vulnerabilities of letting someone in, the gut-wrenching realities of experiencing anxiety, leaving toxic relationships, and seeing yourself through the eyes of the one you love. These complex feelings are expertly contrasted with ultra-poppy melodies, anthemic choruses, and a slight punk edge. “The songs have grown with me over time,” Trifilio explains. “Some of them were written in various stages of life, and I think as we go through different experiences and hardships, you come out stronger. I've grown as a person, so the songwriting reflects that.” With its openhearted, vulnerable themes and progressive, hook-filled take on pop rock and pop punk, Emotional Creature only further cements Beach Bunny and Trifilio’s well-earned reputation as a leading voice of their generation.

The man in the tree has a guitar, he’s gonna sing. But the sun shining through the branches — are those rays yellow or hazy gray? What day is today? When are you not going to feel this way again? “Hello, Hi”: welcome in to a new room to play the styles and feels that lie under Ty Segall’s fingers, easing fresh air into acoustic space with an assortment of love songs flowering in righteous unconsciousness. Plaintive and wistful, but unafraid. Like rain washing away yesterday, “Hello, Hi” pushes open the door, inviting the new to pass through all the old shades and degrees of hot and cold. Dark paths turn off abruptly into absurd darkness, then wind back through the broken rocks, ecstatic again. Absurdity again. It happens everyday. “Hello, Hi” is expansively rendered by Ty, mostly by himself, at home. The isolation suits the songs: you’re only ever as “at home” as you are with yourself in the mirror. Ty’s acoustic and electric guitars and vocal harmonies layer self upon self, forming a spiny backbone for the album. Textures at once gentle and dissonant root the songs as they make their move: melodic arcs convulsing in doubt and bliss and rage. Busting out of the endless gridlock into open space, these spirits pass on through. “Hello, Hi”’s flickering awakening to this trip: the opening three tracks’ train of sweet and salty reflections, before the abrupt crunch of the title track electrifies the senses. Good morning’s turned to good mourning in nothing flat, but there’s still a way up from the doldrums, to try again. Why can’t it be just as simple as “Hello, Hi”? What to do with yourself when love triggers loathing? How many more times do you have to go back there again? Pulling at the scratchy wool threads of an old sweater favored for warmth, comfort, protection, rejection, denial, blindness etc, Ty Segall dives from a clear, open sky, down through the marine layer and the shimmering waves of all the years. Radiating from the same mind fields as Goodbye Bread and Sleeper, mixed with shard edges of contrast and contradiction from things like Freedom’s Goblin, Manipulator, and First Taste, “Hello, Hi” is Ty’s most relaxed and complete production to date, an ebb-and flow fusion of words and music offering abstraction and acceptance as it wrestles itself through a fucked-up time. Your life and what you make of it — throughout “Hello, Hi,” Ty Segall charts a passage through its enduring tangles honestly, with clarity and confusion.

The release of Colder Streams will mark The Sadies’ final studio recording with founding member Dallas Good, who unexpectedly passed away in February. This long-awaited and highly anticipated 11th studio album produced by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry. “I was utterly thrilled the Sadies asked me to produce this record,” said Richard Reed Parry, “which mostly meant I just hung around listening to the greatest live band in the country playing their asses off, and then occasionally I’d get off the couch and sing backing vocals. That said, this is The Sadies’ finest album, the one I always hoped they’d make one day and I’m stoked to have been there helping them do it. What an incredible band.“

WAX NINE / JULY 22, 2022

SPACEMOTH NO PAST NO FUTURE No Past No Future is the debut album of psychedelic, space-pop artist Spacemoth. As Spacemoth’s Maryam Qudus was hard at work in her recording studio, synthesizers piled high, she found her mind in another place, hypnotized by the questions swirling inside her: “How could I ever face this world alone?” she wondered. “How long will I be able to stay in this place that I love?” Attempting to understand her position in the universe, the relationships that hold her together, and the climate crisis unfolding around her, she realized ruminating over these concerns was paradoxically taking her away from precious experiences. No Past No Future is the reckoning point between nostalgia and nihilism: the struggle to hang on to a moment as it warps in time.

Devotion to music has driven Qudus—a performer, composer, and producer based in the Bay Area—for as long as she can remember. At age twelve, she traded chores for guitar lessons; at sixteen, she took on after school jobs to pay for voice lessons. As a first-generation Afghan-American child of working-class immigrant parents, finding a place in music has been nothing short of a challenge for Qudus. But after years of building a reputation as a sought-after producer and studio engineer, she’s found a prominent place for herself. She’s collaborated with countless artists, including clients like Wax Nine’s Sad13, Toro y Moi, and Tune-Yards, which expanded her endless curiosity for recorded music and sparked the studio experiments that became No Past No Future.

LP (Clear vinyl) UPC 677517700817 CD UPC 677517700824 CS UPC 677517700831

The bulk of performance on Spacemoth songs comes from Qudus herself, who favors vintage synths like the Yamaha CS-50 and Korg Polysix alongside fluttering tape manipulations; these create cosmic, lush soundbeds, drawing comparisons to beloved projects like Broadcast and Stereolab. On songs like “Waves Come Crashing,” a whirlwind of noise leads into darker, bass-heavy instrumentation as she confronts the inevitability of death: “These fears, they have taken our years,” she laments about the anxiety of mortality. On “Pipe and Pistol,” Qudus explores the experience of being an immigrant starting over in America. The song showcases punchy rhythms, reminiscent of Devo’s post-punk dynamism: “I see your face / my powers, they raise,” she sings with potency. Identifying cyclical habits inspired “Round In Loops,” which highlights patterns we endure in our lives and minds. “Boss is waiting / we run / love is fading / we run,” Qudus commands, encouraging escapism and a break to the cycle of mundanity.

TRACKLISTING

Every track flows with Qudus’ low timbered vocals, in harmony with the watery, glowing synthesizers that anchor the album. The result is a record rich in intergalactic, avant-pop, radiating in astonishment at the vast, emotional landscape humans contain within ourselves, and in wonder at the preciousness of our time on earth.

JOHN ZORN SUITE FOR PIANO TZA CD 8389 Archival Series Brian Marsella, Jorge Roeder, Ches Smith. Praeludium * Allemande * Sarabande * Scherzo * Menuet * Passacaglia * Gigue * Pavane * Intermezzo * Air Inspired in part by the Goldberg Variations and Schoenberg’s solo piano music, Suite for Piano is Zorn’s very personal take on some of the oldest traditional classical forms. It is performed here by one of the most dedicated, virtuosic, and passionate interpreters in the Zorn universe, Brian Marsella, whose educational experience (too “jazz” for the classical world and too “classical” for the jazz world) makes him the perfect interpreter of Zorn’s cross-pollinating musical poetics. Accompanied by the telepathic rhythm section of Jorge Roeder and Ches Smith (Heaven and Earth Magick) this is a beautiful and soulful program of music for the classic instrumentation of piano, bass, and drums.

Roots and Crowns Thrill-163/THJ - 70163

*90377-ABGDCb GENRE: ROCK FILE UNDER: “C” “Califone” Roots and Crowns. “Uniting where you come from – your roots -- with what you strive to be or what you reinvent yourself to become -- crowns,” explains Califone’s Tim Rutili. “At the bottom of these songs are the memories and images you sift through in the process.” Califone’s earliest roots lie in the band Red Red Meat, from whence came Califone’s founding members Tim Rutili and Ben Massarella and its longtime producer Brian Deck. The band’s first release was a self-titled EP on Flydaddy in 1998, followed later by the full-length debut, Roomsound, in 2001 (recently re-issued on Thrill Jockey) and eventually the band’s Thrill Jockey debut, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes in 2003. After touring for the release of Roomsound, Califone had little time off to take in the impact of the music they were creating. In three years, they recorded four albums (two instrumental, two song-based including Heron King Blues) and toured heavily in between with Wilco, Modest Mouse, Sea and Cake and others. They performed at All Tomorrow’s Parties curated by Sonic Youth and Rutili contributed to Isaac Brock’s Ugly Casanova project and Michael Krassner’s Boxhead Ensemble with Fred Lonberg-Holm and members of Smog and Dirty Three. “Before we started to work on the new the record, I was listening to ‘Orchids’ by Psychic TV on repeat,” says Rutili. “This song made me want to start writing songs again.” Califone offers a sparse and beautiful cover of “Orchids” on Roots & Crowns. The line from the song, ‘In the morning after the night/ I fall in love with the light,’ became a theme for the new album. Imagery of rebirth comes up often on Roots & Crowns. On “3 Legged Animals,” Rutili sings, “3 legged animals shut their sweet eyes/ lick your scars and grow wings,” and later, “leave your memories, we’re almost new.” He explains, “that song started out as a song called ‘Dreamless’ for the end credits of The Lost. The last scene in the film is a total bloodbath; after that it seemed like the film could use a little sweetness, a bit of salvation for these dark, misfit characters after a period of intense violence. We re-recorded it with Califone and took a more detailed approach, both lyrically and instrumentally. Where the first version felt more about balancing the mood of the film, the one from the album feels more about hope and joy, rebirth, survival and self-acceptance.” Califone started recording Roots & Crowns in October 2005 and worked on it in chunks at 4Deuces Studio in Chicago with Brian Deck, in Long Beach and Phoenix with Michael Krassner, and at home in Los Angeles and Chicago until May 2006. “Some of these songs started as hummed melodies into my cell phone recorder while I was driving. Others were triggered by overheard conversations, loops brought in from home, field recordings or sounds we made in the studio before the tape was rolling,” says Rutili. For instance ‘Spider’s House’ is built on the sound of a piano with duct tape and paper clips all over its wires. “We took our time to shape and manipulate a more experimental collage of sounds into solid melodies and more concise song structures.” The time away and each member’s individual work naturally brought new elements into the sound of Califone’s music. Both Rutili’s and Becker’s soundtrack work are more atmospheric, however the challenge of enhancing a scene of film without cluttering it or overwhelming it informed their approach to the new recording. The burglary of Califone’s equipment during the band’s last tour, including guitars, banjo, a 1917 violin, bells and more, altered the sound. The band had to find new gear on a tight budget. The instruments are new partners, new sounds that forced them to stretch in new directions. Limitations, obstructions and darkness, and the new possibilities they illuminate; roots and crowns. “In that way”, says Rutili, “this album is a conscious and resolved thing. It fully realizes ideas we touched on in the past and where we come from as a band, and takes us into our next phase of life.”

TRACK LISTING:

Sam Prekop and John McEntire are two artists who both together and as individuals, have expanded the definition of rock. Beyond the work they did together in seminal The Sea and Cake they’ve both have continued to push themselves and the bounds of their art in countless other ways. Each is now esteemed for their singular musical voice and sonic innovations. Prekop has garnered acclaim for his solo releases in ensemble or on modular synthesis, as well as his visual art and photography. While McEntire has become one of the most celebrated engineers, composers, and drummers in forward-thinking music. With nearly three decades of experience working together in larger groups, this is their first full-length collaboration as a duo. Sons Of finds two master craftsmen working at the nexus of pristine production and skillful improvisation, forging compelling narrative arcs into glistening metropolises of infinite pulse, something they’d wanted to do for a long while it was a natural fit for two artists both drawn to incorporating electronic music into rock and jazz contexts. The resulting epic contains multitudes, from head-nodding throb to springy glitches and moments of euphoric bliss, by concentrating their considerable skills as both creators and curators, the duo have crafted an album abundantly vibrant, an intoxicating exploration of pure inspiration and intuition. Prekop and McEntire’s Sons Of is a thrillingly diverse journey and a masterclass in longform music that reveals nuance at each listen, as sonically curious as it is inviting. Unique textures and untapped worlds of possibility are unearthed by an elaborate array of synthesizer modules, samplers, trigger pads and effects which the duo skillfully implement as potent tools . Over the album’s four pieces Prekop and McEntire apply their intrinsic and practiced understandings of pop architectures to create dynamic movements. The resulting sound is one of transformative fluidity; each passing beat marking a sense of familiarity while the surrounding atmospheres are in constant flux. Ever-shifting tonalities and magnetic grooves propel the music with persistent momentum without feeling hurried buoyed by the steady pace, creating the framework that allows space for new sounds to breathe and evolve. Throughout the album, the duo exudes a spontaneous ease, unafraid to settle into a particular cadence or veer into entirely new directions on a dime. SALES POINTS First full-length collaboration from two artists who have expanded the field of rock thru their work over the last 3 decades, both as individuals and in their time together in The Sea and Cake. John McEntire is known for his work as a musician playing with Tortoise, Jim O’Rourke, Stereolab, and others. Owner and operator of Soma Electronic Music Studios, he is also known for his pioneering work as a producer and engineer working with Stereolab, Archer Prewitt, Yo La Tengo, Bright Eyes, The Fiery Furnaces, Chicago Underground, among many others. Prekop has put out 5 solo albums to acclaim and is also a well respected visual artist who has published, shown, and sold works worldwide. John McEntire’s work with Tortoise, Sam Prekop’s solo albums, and their shared releases with The Sea & Cake were and remain some of Thrill Jockey’s strongest sales. “Comma is an exercise in taste, expertise and skill as much as anything else, and it’s evidence (if it were ever in doubt) that contemporary modular synths can be used to highly emotive and beautiful effect.” - The Quietus on Sam Prekop’s most recent solo effort “The longtime Sea and Cake frontman makes fascinatingly abstracted music about the act of listening itself.” - Pitchfork on Sam Prekop Available on limited edition CD.

Carlos Niño Extra Presence International Anthem is proud to present this first ever vinyl edition of an album that Carlos Niño released digitally and exclusively via his Bandcamp page in 2020. Despite it’s very limited initial release, the original album, which was titled Actual Presence, received glowing praise from dedicated followers of Carlos Niño & Friends. In Pitchfork, writer Marty Sartini Garner said: “Though it was partially recorded before the pandemic and the uprisings that have defined 2020, Actual Presence is music for an unpleasant present. It’s discordant and fractured, and it frequently comes off as a long trip toward a salvation that’s just out of reach. But like Coltrane, whose spiritual influence runs deep here, Carlos Niño believes in a big, beautiful universe that exists in spite of the present suffering. The sprawling, ever-changing sound of Actual Presence is his best attempt yet to recreate the joy of losing yourself to it.” Featuring a whole LP worth of entirely new, additional material, the remastered and expanded Extra Presence features Niño alongside an incredibly high profile slate of collaborators including: Jamael Dean, Nate Mercereau, Shabazz Palaces, Deantoni Parks, Sam Gendel, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jamire Williams, Iasos, and more.

There’s the pull of the dream of the never ending New Orleans night in Past the Shadows and the edge of your seat domestic drama of This Ain’t No Getaway, where a woman gets her last things from an abusive boyfriend’s apartment finally declaring, “Even if the police are called, I’m gonna leave not escape….Because this ain’t no getaway.” The Delines are led by vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations TX), keyboardist and trumpeter Cory Gray, as well as Sean Oldham, Freddie Trujillo, and Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine). Vlautin is no stranger to critical acclaim in the US, UK, and Europe, enjoying cult success and rave reviews from the likes of the New York Times, Uncut, Hot Press, and Q Magazine both as a novelist and as the front man of alt-country outfit Richmond Fontaine.

OVERVIEW Green Sky Accident from Bergen, Norway plays indie rock with lots of energy, catchy riffs and a whole lotta love. A good melody is essential for every song, the arrangements are always built around those. Their music can be compared to the indie heroes of the nineties - jangly and noisy, and sweet while still packing a punch. While their previous records were made mostly for themselves with little thought of reaching a wider audience, their new record Daytime TV sounded too good to be kept secret, and the band signed a deal with Apollon Records to release it in the spring of 2022. The album is a remarkably cohesive experience considering how varied the different songs are. There is lovely power pop in the songs Insert Coin and Finding Failure, prog tendencies in the song Daytime TV, aggressive double bass drums on the song In Vain, and big sweeping atmospheric songs like Screams at Night and Point of no Turn, to name half of the songs contained within the album. OVERVIEW

«Supermassive», the seventh studio album by Norwegian instrumentalists Pymlico will be released on the 20th of May, 2022. The band keeps on exploring the landscape between progressive rock and fusion. They have clearly found their style and showcase an album filled with catchy hooks, singable melodies, strong grooves and blistering guitar solos. Mixing genres and taking inspiration from a wide array of styles including progressive rock, jazz rock, fusion, AOR and pop has resulted in eight powerful tracks. Produced with meticulous attention to details, the album has a crystal-clear modern sound that truly is supermassive. Although most music is written by brothers Arild Brøter and Øyvind Brøter, contribution to the writing process by long-time member guitarist Stephan Hvinden and new members Robin Løvøy (sax) and Are Nerland (bass) makes this very much a band project with the group in focus. Despite this there are room for some guest appearances, including the great Roine Stolt on the track “Clockwork”.On working with Roine Stolt, bandleader Arild Brøter says: «Having Roine Stolt on our new album is absolutely a dream come true. No other musician inspired me more when I first started to write music. All I wanted was for my songs to sound like his. Even though our music has changed a lot since then, Roine and The Flower Kings has always been a true inspiration for the band. I am both proud and very grateful to have one of my absolute favourite guitar players on our new album!” MARKETING & PROMOTION / SELLING POINTS  For fans of Norwegian prog rock and band such as Airbak, Oak and Wobbler  Debut album from Caligonaut/ Ole Michael Bjørndal from Oak, Bjørn Riis & Airbag.

SALES TEXT Hazeen is an anti-racist Muslim death metal band formed by Sydneybased artists, musicians and academics Safdar Ahmed on vocals and guitar, and Can Yalcinkaya on the drums and darbouka. Safdar Ahmed, has been invited to take part in dokumentafifteen with a video installation and a collateral album, to be released on Piranha Records. In his own words; "For our first album 'Sovereign Murders' we are collaborating with Kian Dayani, who plays bass guitar and daf drum, and Kurdish-Iranian trash metal guitarist Kazem Kazemi, who was held as a refugee in Australia's offshore detention camp on Manus Island for 6 years. Our music confronts the expanding field of racism, Islamophobia and bihotry in the contemporary world, critically tackling the tropes of far-right wing ideology, 'timebomb' demographics, refugee panics and taqiyya/halalfood conspiracies. 'Sovereign Murders' will combine the energy of underground metal with Turkish and Iranian rhytms."By appropriating the enormous and ever growing repertoire of historical Islamophobia, we create a poetics of terror. Deluxe LP is on 180g black vinyl with tip-on gatefold jacket. Col LP is on 180g ultra-clear vinyl, standard sleeve. CD has a gatefold CD jacket & printed inner-sleeve. Following years of international touring and a lengthy list of critically-acclaimed collaborations with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe in recent years (most recently the duo’s self-titled 2018 LP), the new album will be Parks’ first full-length solo offering since her debut, ‘Blood Hot’, was released back in 2013 on Alan McGee’s 359 Music label. “In my mind, this album is like hopscotch”, Parks says: “These songs were pieced together over time in London, Toronto and Los Angeles with friends and family between August 2019 and March 2021. So many other versions of these songs exist. The recording and final completion of this album took over two years and wow - the lesson I have learned the most is that words are spells. If I didn’t know it before, I know it now for sure. I only want to put good out into the universe.” A growing disillusionment with the state of the world paired with an injury that stopped Parks from being able to play guitar and piano for months meant the album was nearly shelved. Recorded over a two year period but with songs, lyrics and ideas dating back over a decade.

Wall to Wall Jive (An Anthology 1965-2020) Easy Action 2CD EARS178 5060446073537

A career spanning 6 decades is something exceptional for a musician that is still playing & recording. Especially considering the crazy and insane performances Andy would deliver and the hundreds of injuries he’d receive. From the mid-60s mod beat of The Silence to recent recordings in the last couple of years by way of Psychedelic popsters John’s Children, Glamsters Jet. Punk Rockers Radio Stars on to a heavier rock sound with the same band in later years. Mixed in with totally unreleased material and over a dozen singles. Sprinkled with some famous names adding to the music such as Rod Stewart , Maggie Bell, Marc Bolan. This anthology is set to coincide with Andy’s long awaited autobiography of his tales over these years “Stunt Rocker”. Liner notes from Andy himself all the tracks have been re mastered CD1 1.Cold On Me-The Silence 1965 2.Forgive Me If I'm Wrong-The Silence 1965 3.Smashed Blocked- John’s Children Single 1966 4.Just What You Want Just What You'll Get - John’s Children Single 1967 5.Come And Play With Me In The Garden John’s Children Single 1967 6.Hippy Gumbo- 1967 7.Casbah Candy -1967 8.It's Been a Long Time-1967 ( from the film ‘Here we go round the Mulberry Bush’ ) 9.Arthur Green-1967 10.Fool From Upper Eden- Single 1968 11.Another Lucky Lie-Single 1968 12.You Can't Do That-Single 1968 13.Cornflake Zoo-Single 1968 14.Help- 1968 15.Lazy Sunday - Jet 1975 16.Dirty PicturesRadio Stars Single 1977 17.Nervous Wreck-Radio Stars Single 1977 18.Is it Really Necessary? -Radio Stars 1977 19.God tape / (I've got dem old) Sex in Chains Blues (Again Mama)- Live Radio Stars 1978 20.Life's Too Short -1985 21.Desdemona- with Boz Boorer 1988 22.Scare me to Death- Radio Stars 1988 CD2 1.Eleanor Rigby-John’s Children II 2004 2.Here Comes the SunJohn’s Children II 2004 3.Blister Bird-2016 4.Cluster Bombs-2008 5.Heather Lane-2005 Andy Ellison & Andy Lewis 6.Top of the Tower-2007 Andy Ellison & Andy Lewis 7.Disappear Across the Sky-2007 Andy Ellison & Andy Lewis 8.Children of The Revolution- with Boz Boorer 2003 9.It’s Been a Long Time- with Boz Boorer 1995 10.Sara Crazy Child- with Boz Boorer 1995 11.But She's Mine-John’s Children II 1999 12.Joyrider-Radio Stars 1993 13.Blame it on the Young-Radio Stars 1993 14.Down Train1994 15.She’s So Dissatisfied-1995 16.Cosmic Dancer - with Boz Boorer 2003 17.Was He Pushed ? 2020 18. JOSH ROUSE GOING PLACES WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: JULY 29, 2022

Josh Rouse wrote the songs for Going Places while hunkered down in Spain with his family in 2020 and 2021. The inspiration was to have a set of new songs to play in a small club run by a couple of his Spanish bandmates. The result is a collection of songs that feel a bit looser, lean into the guitar a bit more and will sound great in the live setting. It’s also another sonic shift for Josh, who is not afraid of changing things up. What remains consistent is Josh’s ability to write hooks and find grooves that create a sound that is at once familiar, but wholly new. Fans will likely gravitate toward, “Hollow Moon,” which in a just world, would be a massive hit single. It is classic Josh Rouse. But songs like, “Apple of My Eye,” and “She’s In L.A.” definitely show the Spanish influence, which Rouse calls, “A Pan-American sound”

“the music (has) a steady groove that one wants to play repeatedly.” - PopMatters on the new songs

NICK LOWE THE CONVINCER LP STREET DATE: JULY 29, 2022 Nick Lowe’s 2001 album The Convincer established him as an elder statesman of rock and roll, far removed from the ironic power popper he was in the 1970s. The album arrived in a different world than the day before, releasing on September 11, 2001. These were songs for troubled times (“I’m a Mess,” “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide”) and Nick’s songwriting was never sharper, with Mojo Magazine saying “Nick Lowe has made the album of his career.” The album has been remastered for vinyl from the original tapes.

HIGHLIGHTS: ☛ Reissue of Nick Lowe’s timeless 2001 studio album The Convincer, featuring staples such as “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide,” “Homewrecker” and “I’m a Mess.”

☛ Remastered for vinyl from the original tapes. ☛ Nick is touring North America and Europe, with many dates featuring Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Los Straitjackets, and Tommy McLain & C.C. Adcock.

☛ “Nick Lowe has made the album of his career” - Mojo Magazine ☛ “The quintessential portrait of his third act” - Pitchfork ☛ “A late-period masterpiece and a textbook example of a gracefully maturing artist.”

COLORED VINYL PRESSINGS OF REMEDY and ROOTY RELEASE DATE: JULY 29TH, 2022 REMEDY is Basement Jaxx’s joyous debut album from 1999. It was one of the most assured, propulsive full-lengths the dance world had seen since Daft Punk’s Homework. A set of incredibly diverse tracks, Remedy is indebted to the raw American house of Todd Terry and Masters at Work, and even shares a penchant for Latin vibes (especially on the horn-driven “Bingo Bango” and the opener, “Rendez-Vu,” which trades a bit of salsa wiggle with infectious vocoderized disco).

- ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

Named after their infamous Brixton club night, Basement Jaxx’s second album Rooty saw Basement Jaxx continue to push the boundaries of pop and club music. The album mixes classic house with generous lashings of punk, funk, R&B, jazz, hip hop, 2-step and pop songcraft in a mad genre crash that works like a charm. It features the massive tracks “Where’s Your Head At”, “Romeo” and “Do Your Thing”.

Mid-Air Thief - Crumbling le under: bedroom pop dream pop electronic experimental folk pop

Info: Although sung almost entirely in Korean, Mid-Air Thief's cult-acclaimed album Crumbling exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by guest vocalist Summer Soul's entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes. Crumbling is a compelling accomplishment of both composition and production, bending as it does to its unique contours of consonance and dissonance, always resolving to a place of calm and beauty.

Track List: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

왜 (Why) 쇠사슬 (Ahhhh, These Chains!) 감은 듯 (Gameun Deut) 곡선과 투과광 (Curve and Light) 함께 무너지기 (Crumbling Together) 수호자 (Protector) 흙 (Dirt) 무소식 (No Answer)

Sounds and voices constantly get warped while splashes of synthesizer splatter across songs, adding tension to otherwise pretty creations, like the tempo-.ipping jaunt “Curve and Light,” and making the -nale of autumnal slow-burn “Ahhhh, These Chains!”— a number starting with calming bell chimes and vocal harmonies that gradually blur together before eventually giving way to blasts of guitar—hit all the harder. -Bandcamp

Leaving behind an awareness that something once occupied the space you now feel. You can sense it. Indulging that resonance, the wider understanding of dynamics, gives Crumbling an incredible sense of depth. Weatherday - Come in Lle under: emo experimental indie rock rock

Info: Weatherday is the noise-pop project of the mononymous Swedish artist Sputnik. While they have also found success with their side project, Lola's Pocket PC, it is their cult-acclaimed album Come in that has garnered them a large and dedicated following through its raucous musical universe and serpentine sparklepunk stylings. Often heralded as an achievement of lo-L bedroom pop tangled with threads of emo and DIY, Come in is better described, in its author’s own words, as a “life goal.” The initial spark that ignited the Lery, heated debut from Weatherday originated from Sputnik’s desire to write, perform, and produce a record all on their own, from the ground up. Starting in 2014-2015, their preliminary attempts at what would eventually become Come in Lrst materialized as a shoegaze EP, and then a dream-pop meets chamber-pop LP. Ever the perfectionist though, Sputnik wasn’t satisLed with the results and deleted the releases without a trace, Lnally deciding to set out in the direction of something more akin to their longtime inMuences of emo and its various subgenres.

Track List: 1. Come in 2. Older Than Before (Oswald Made No Way for Himself) 3. Mio, min Mio 4. Sleep In While You're Doing Your Best 5. My Sputnik Sweetheart 6. Cut Lips 7. Embarrassing Paintings (Agatha Showed Great Initiative in Art Class This Week) 8. Water Dreamer the Same 9. Painted Girl's Theme 10. Агaтка (Agatha! You're Being Melodramatic!) 11. Porcelain Hands

After two years of tinkering in this stylistic sweetspot, Sputnik settled on the eleven knotted, maximal tracks that comprise Come in. From the caustic, harsh peaks of “Sleep in while you’re doing your best” to the soothing piano-laden passages of “Embarrassing paintings” and experimental, granular coda of “Water dreamer the same,” the range of Weatherday’s debut is doubtlessly a product of an artist who refuses to compromise a single shred of their vision.

Zenizen - P.O.C (Proof of Concept) le under: hip hop r & b

Info: “This record is a representation of everything that has led me to this point. It’s been a long, bizarre path,” says Zenizen’s Opal Hoyt of both her life and her journey to make this record. Like Peter and the Wolf, the Russian symphony Hoyt used as a creative framework, P.O.C (Proof of Concept) is a series of vignettes—the collection of which mirrors Hoyt’s long journey, from her adoption in Alaska to her many moves between DC, Jamaica, Vermont, and New York.

Track List: 1. Intro 2. Coming Home 3. Aja 4. Come Around 5. Get Out 6. Es Is (protocol) 7. Burth 8. How Hard 9. I Would (...but you want me down) ft. Nappy Nina 10. Break ft. Blvck Spvde 11. Drought ft. Helado Negro 12. Is It

Along this unconventional path, Hoyt met the talented cast of musicians who would go on support her in the recording of P.O.C: variegated bass by Jonathan Maron (Erykah Badu,D’Angelo); drums by Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim, Empress Of); moments of magic on horns by Sly 5th Ave (Prince); guitars by Benamin (IGBO); intricate mixing by Nick Herrera (Hiatus Kaiyote), Benamin, and Jon Bap; with mastering by Heba Kadry and Davy Levitan. Then there’s Hoyt herself, whose rich alto pierces through with poetic lyricism, supported by her contributions of Rhodes, synths, and sample arrangements (think: babbling brooks and birdsong). In other words, Hoyt isn’t just a songwriter in the classic sense. She’s also a skilled producer with an ear for excellent arrangements—the kind of musician who enjoys meandering and allowing her artistic vision to percolate. Likewise, P.O.C is a record that blooms in beauty over time—the kind of record that you can take anywhere in any season, as any version of yourself.

obby Marchan was one of New Orleans’ most colorful rhythm and blues artists. A larger-than-life performer best remembered for his R&B chart-topper “There’s Something on Your Mind,” a number 1 R&B single in 1960 on the Fire label. In 1955 he signed to Ace Records, and in ’57 joined Huey “Piano” Smith as the original lead vocalist with Smith’s legendary Clowns. In addition to appearing on classics including “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the BoogieWoogie Flu,” “Don’t You Just Know It,” “You Don’t Know Yockomo,” and “Havin’ a Good Time,” Marchan also continued his solo career, issuing several more Ace singles including “I’ll Never Let You Go” and “Rockin Behind The Iron Curtain.” When Ace owner Johnny Vincent took a pass on the two-part “There’s Something On Your Mind,” Marchan defected to Harlembased Fire, soon posting his only R&B chart-topper.

Lunatic Harness, µ-Ziq's rare and sought-after fourth album, was originally released in July 1997 on Virgin's Hut Recordings label. It is generally considered to be Mike Paradinas's best work of the nineties. An Apple Music review describes Lunatic Harness as "the prettiest album to come out of the mid-'90s "drill'n'bass movement", noting that Paradinas eschewed the abrasiveness of similar works by Squarepusher and Aphex Twin in favour of "atmospheres of ethereal color and shimmering melody", bringing the album "closer to pop music than anything Paradinas had previously attempted". Soul Jazz Records Presents DEUTSCHE ELEKTRONISCHE MUSIK 2 29th July 2022 "A near-definitive guide to some of the world's most extraordinary music." ***** The Guardian

Soul Jazz Records’ ‘Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2’ is their second voyage into the world of Krautrock and German electronic music from the 1970s and early 1980s.

Side 1 1. A.R. Machines - Globus Im Selben Boot 2. Can - Halleluwah 3. Roedelius - Le Jardin 4. Michael Rother - Karussell

Two double LPs (with over 2½ hours of amazing music) features a stunning line-up of seminal German groups, including Can, Faust, Popul Vuh, Neu!, Cluster, Amon Düül II, La Düsseldorf, as well as a host of lesser known and more obscure groups and artists such as Agitation Free, Bröselmaschine, Niagara and many more.

Side 2 1. Michael Hoenig - Sun and Moon 2. Agitation Free - You Play For Us Today 3. D.A.F. - Co Co Pino

As well as the original pioneers, ‘Deutsche Elektronische Musik 2’ also features many of the second wave of German electronic artists and groups from the late 70s and early 80s (DAF, Asmus Tietchens, Rolf Trostel), who successfully connected new wave, minimal synth and a European post punk avant-gardism with the earlier more established Krautrock pioneers who began at the start of the 70s.

Side 3 1. Harald Grosskopf - Emphasis 2. Amon Düül II - A Morning Excuse 3. Conrad Schnitzler and Wolf Sequenza Fata Morgana 4. Bröselmaschine - Nossa Bova

Soul Jazz Records Deutsche Elektronische Music Volume 2 is now available as two separate double LPs for the first time in over 10 years!!

Influenced as much by the electronic experimentalism of Stockhausen as the progressive rock of USA and UK underground rock, young German artists seamlessly created a new music with its own unique identity, which they ironically entitled Krautrock. By the end of the 1970s, with the arrival of new wave synthetics and complex drum machines, this music had mutated once again into new electronic visions reflecting a new Germany. The vinyl edition comes in two volumes of heavyweight, super-loud vinyl double albums, featuring all sleevenotes and text.

rummer Jeremy Cunningham and saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi have been nearinseparable collaborators for years, working in countless groups together across Chicago’s vibrant jazz community. Their new album A Better Ghost finds them in collaboration with Los Angeles-based bassist/producer Paul Bryan, and is the product of phone-recorded improvisations and experiments dating back to 2017. With Laurenzi creating sequences and samples on the OP-1 synthesizer while on the road with Bon Iver, and Cunningham developing drum parts and melodic fragments, the two began finding a distinct direction to take the work, sharpening and editing these snippets into cohesive compositions. While Cunningham and Laurenzi have collaborated this way for years, they decided to add Los Angeles based musician Paul Bryan, the Grammy-winning producer, engineer, and bassist (Jeff Parker, Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams) who co-produced Cunningham’s Northern Spy debut 2019 LP The Weather Up There to finish these pieces. Adding bass parts and a producer’s ear to these songs, Bryan’s vital contributions were the missing link. “Paul really understood the vision of our music and added so much to what we’d already recorded. At a certain point it was a no-brainer to expand the duo to a trio” says Laurenzi. On A Better Ghost, there’s a euphoric melding of Chicago and LA’s jazz worlds present with features from prolific saxophonist Josh Johnson, legendary drummer Jay Bellerose, and Cunningham’s Resavoir bandmate and leader, trumpeter Will Miller. The resulting tracks are the product of years-long collaborators expanding their deep chemistry. On “New Dust,” Laurenzi provides a smooth, natural improvisation, dynamically ebbing over a deep dub groove kept steady with distinct rhythmic assurance from Cunningham, Bellerose, and Bryan. “With What We Have” wakes slowly, focusing on gradual layering of horns that culminates in near-chaos. . The title track highlights the trio’s seamless blending of acoustic and synthesized palettes, featuring a woozy clarinet sample and propellant percussion alongside sci-fi synths and a Pharoah Sanders-inspired saxophone solo. Singer Katie Ernst guests on “The Way We Remember,” crafting a melody from a poem Cunningham wrote about the passing of his father in 2020. The synths ebb and flow along with Cunningham’s painterly approach at the drums, spreading colors and lines across a languid backdrop of saxophone chords and synth bass.

A Better Ghost is a reflection of how Cunningham, Laurenzi, and Bryan have found a natural musical connection that is unbound by genre and deeply personal. “Playing with Dustin and Paul has strengthened my musical instincts and allowed me to become more patient developing a sound and playing a song. Sometimes you have to just let the thing happen. Try not to get in the way too much, and let the music breathe.” - Jeremy Cunningham

DC GORE

ALL THESE THINGS OVERVIEW DC Gore (Dominic Gore) shares his synth-layered, politically prescient debut album, All These Things. Following the dissolution of south London trio Little Cub, Gore has remodelled and reimagined the band’s electronic synth-pop within his solo work to incorporate additional acoustic instrumentation which makes for a more textured and temperate sound. All These Things expertly layers fantastically dystopian imagery against twinkling tapestries of electronics and propulsive beats. It’s a shift akin to the Pet Shop Boys’ development between Introspective and Behaviour: from bright, dancefloor-focused pop to melancholic mini-symphonies.

As inspired by the unvarnished portraiture of Martin Parr as he is Ballardian grotesquerie - and by the seedy witticisms of Jarvis Cocker and arch art-pop commentary of Neil Tennant, Gore’s music sits proudly within a rich tradition of distinctively British disrupters. Skewering notions of national identity with a vivid mix of pin-sharp satire in an expansive palette of synthesising new wave artrock, Gore effortlessly creates songs that are as ingeniously calculated as they are dance-inducing. Highlights include the propulsive, tragicomic “Nietzsche On The Beach”, the melancholic dancefloorfocused “California” and “Bodies” featuring plaintive piano chords and distorted guitar. Where Still Life (the debut album of Gore’s previous band Little Cub) found Gore focused almost exclusively on analogue synths, for All These Things he was equally drawn to organic textures. Largely self-produced, it sees him broadening his palette to create a more expansive and impactful sound. “The album is a bookend to a torrid period in my life,” Gore comments. “There are so many themes in there of failure and frustration (personal & political), shame and longing, but in the end there is a hope to it. All these things that feel so all-consuming at the time become quotidian in the wake of a global pandemic. The record acted as a liberation from myself and has given me an opportunity to reimagine everything, to give myself permission to be excited and at least a modicum of optimism for the future.”

SATURDAY’S SONS:

THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1964-1966 The Sons Of Adam—a lean, mean rock’n’roll machine from the Hollywood rock scene of the mid-1960s—quite literally blew the competition off the stage. Led by influential lead guitarist Randy Holden (Other Half / Blue Cheer), the Sons boasted an affable frontman in Jac Ttanna (Genesis) and an incomparable rhythm section in Mike Port and Michael Stuart-Ware (Love). Schooled in surf, emboldened by the British Invasion, the band had a fearsome reputation as a live act. In this unprecedented anthology, Saturday’s Sons features a previously unreleased 1966 full concert performance from San Francisco’s famed Avalon Ballroom, a recording so powerfully dynamic that few listeners will doubt the band’s masterful live presence. The quartet enjoyed a brief but incandescent three-year career which is fully documented on this compilation with rare 45s, studio outtakes and demo recordings, including fiery surf material from their early incarnation The Fender IV, and the legendary single “Feathered Fish”, donated to the band by Love’s Arthur Lee. The story of the Sons Of Adam’s unfulfilled reach for the brass ring is detailed in a definitive 15,000 word essay on the group written by compilation producer Alec Palao, presented here in a full-color booklet with many rare and previously unseen images, and housed in a Deluxe Gatefold 2 LP Set or Deluxe CD Digipak. ‘Escapology’ - Kode9's first album since 2015's ‘Nothing’ – is the first audio document of a wider project, Astro-Darien, ongoing since last year. His most ambitious work yet as a multi-disciplinary artist, ‘Escapology’ is the soundtrack album to the sonic fiction Astro-Darien, which will be released in October on Hyperdub’s sub-label Flatlines. The music reconfigures Astro-Darien's tense, off-world atmospheres into slices of high definition, asymmetric club rhythms, woven through thrilling sound design and vertiginous sonics. ‘Escapology’ is just one entry point into of the Astro-Darien universe, which had begun to surface in 2021 as a two-week audiovisual installation on the main dance floor at club space Corsica Studios in South London, and as a multi-channel diffusion on the 50 speaker Acousmonium at the invitation of INA-GRM in Paris, the institution founded in 1951 by the musique concrète pioneer Pierre Schaeffer, composer Pierre Henry and the engineer Jacques Poullin. The artwork for both ‘Escapology’ and Astro-Darien was produced by Kode9’s long-time collaborators Lawrence Lek (digital world design), and Optigram (typography and gfx).

700 Bliss is the forward-thinking duo of DJ Haram and Moor Mother. Their first full length for Hyperdub is an album of noise rap that ties together the raw edges of club music and hip hop with punk energy, jazz, house-party catharsis, percussion-heavy analogue sound design, and cheeky skits, ranging from experimental rap tracks with rolling hi hats and lyrical bravado, to poetry set to noise and sound collage. Moor Mother and DJ Haram started collaborating in 2014 and eventually formed 700 Bliss, a blistering live act in Philly's DIY scene, releasing their 2018 debut, Spa 700 on Halcyon Veil / Don Giovanni Records. Since that time, both artists have grown global followings. Moor Mother is a prolific solo artist and collaborator, writer, and member of Black Quantum Futurism while Haram has been curating and creating radio shows, DJing, and producing (including an EP for Hyperdub in 2019). ‘Nothing To Declare’ is a smart, danceable revelation, a chiseled soundscape of dive bombing bass, piercing bleeps, crunchy distortion, and wavering synth lines. Welcoming in a variety of voices from their extended, cross-genre scene, 700 Bliss also bring along a cast of collaborators, including vocalists Orion Sun, Lawfandah, Ase Manual, and Ali Logout (from the band Special Interest), plus Palestinian producer Muqata'a, and writer M Téllez who delivers a surreal sci fi monologue over a pounding kick drum on ‘More Victories’. ‘Nothing To Declare’ is a deeply layered rewriting of hip hop and electronic music that gives more with each listen. KUEDO INFINITE WINDOW Release Date: 29th July 2022 Kuedo is an avant garde artist based in Berlin. Synergising Vangelis-esque futuristic melodies with thunderous drum programming, the sound is otherworldly in palette and explosive in dynamics. Setting the bar high with his new album “Infinite Window”, the album sonics owe as much to modern R&B icons like Frank Ocean and The Weeknd as they do to legendary composers such as David Axelrod and Tangerine Dream or contemporary breakbeat scientists such as Sully and Jlin. Collaborating with Flying Lotus on the “Blade Runner: Blackout” OST (directed by Shinichirō Watanabe) led to Kuedo being signed by FlyLo’s Grammy-winning label Brainfeeder. He is a genuine genius of an artist who effortlessly treads the tightrope between electronica, classical and pop, and accordingly finds himself in demand with luxury brands such as Fendi and Bvlgari in addition to trailblazing haute couture designers such as Iris Van Herpen. The limited edition yellow vinyl LP features artwork by fast rising visual artists Monja & Vincent and sleeve design by Raf Rennie (Acronym, Prada, Nike). George Is Lord My Sweet George LP/CD/Digital Catalog#: CURED010 Vinyl UPC: 850014131203 CD UPC: 850014131340 Digital UPC: 850014131302 George is Lord is a celebration of all things George Harrison. What began as an exercise in learning to play the drums, became a band. Anna Pomerantz quit her job as Interior Designer to the stars and called upon old friend Lindsay Glover, to teach her to play the drums. Lindsay, who has played in local LA favorites, Whiskey Biscuit and Future Pigeon, began by teaching Anna the fundamentals and quickly it turned into learning songs. “One of the first songs we learned was ‘Something.’ I’ve actually spent most of my life hating the Beatles, but hearing them again for the first time through the drums, made me fall completely in love, especially with George and Ringo” recalls Anna. “I began teaching Lindsay the guitar and we started playing together.” The duo went on to learn a number of songs like, “Long, Long, Long,” “All Things Must Pass,” and “Give me Love” when they realized they were ready to play with other people. Lindsay asked friend Cody Porter of Pearl Harbor and Puro Instinct to come play bass. “In our lessons, Lindsay had taught me how to sing while playing the drums to keep my place in songs. I didn’t think I was going to be a singer in a band, it just happened.” The missing ingredient was a lead guitar player, and the trio invited Sam Blasucci of the popular LA folk duo Mapache if he’d be willing to jam with us. He brought his magic and completed George Is Lord. George is Lord recorded their first album of covers with producer Jason Quever (Beach House, Cass McCombs). Dean Wareham (Luna, Galaxie 500) appears as a guest. The ten song record includes a variety of George favorites from the Beatles catalogue and throughout George’s solo career. Tracks

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX HAUSUMOUNTAIN @GMAIL.COM

Over the last decade, M. Geddes Gengras has released an enormous catalog of wide-ranging, synth-focused music in both solo and collaborative settings. He has participated in inuential experimental groups like Sun Araw, Pocahaunted, Robedoor, and Akron/Family. Along with Sun Araw’s Cameron Stallones and a host of Jamaican singers and artists, Gengras continues to blur the boundaries of dub and electronic music under the name Duppy Gun Productions. The project initially solidied with an acclaimed collaboration called Icon Give Thank (RVNG, 2012) with roots reggae legends The Congos. His solo works have appeared on labels like Room40, Leaving Records, Holy Mountain, and Umor Rex. After many years living in Los Angeles, Gengras is now based out of Hudson, NY.

M. Geddes Gengras has released an enormous catalog of wide-ranging, synth-focused music on labels like Room40, Leaving Records, Holy Mountain, and Umor Rex. He has collaborated with Sun Araw, The Congos, Pocahaunted, Robedoor, and Akron/Family. “Gengras plays with expectations and anticipation as elements go blipping out of earshot and then fall back into place, to the point where you question if they ever actually vanished or were there all along. Rather than build toward release, the track instead dissolves into purgatory, like waiting on a subway platform for a train that scrapes and echoes down the tunnel yet never pulls into the station—and unexpectedly nding yourself standing not on concrete, but dirt.” - Pitchfork “It can be easy to think of modular synths only as generators of methodical and slow-moving music, but Gengras isn’t changing up his live-patched production methods on these jittery techno tracks; he’s gunning the instrument like a muscle car.” - Bandcamp

Expressed, I Noticed Silence, Gengras’s third release on Hausu Mountain, follows the topographical ambient synth networks of I Am The Last of That Green and Warm-Hued World (HAUSMO88, 2019) and the dense technoid beat experiments of Time Makes Nothing Happen (HAUSMO109, 2020). The album once again exemplies Gengras’s penchant for constant self-reinvention and genre-deant exploration within a catalog whose every release carries his essence as a composer and synthesist while surging forward into new ideas and territories. With Gengras’s slowly unfurling ambient landscapes and his signature approach to rhythms animated by cyclical basslines and the layering of highdenition synth voices, Expressed, I Noticed Silence builds on the precedents set by his recent output while digging deeper into melodic sculpting and lush harmonic architectures than ever before. The album’s crystal-clear production and attention to ne details of spatialization and interaction between synth voices and string instruments yields a luminous spread of sounds. If you were to split hairs regarding its genre designation, you might say that the album proves too active and continually evolving to be purely ambient music in its most elemental form, with a network of owing melodic voices and contrasting textures perhaps best compared to the kosmische movement of the German experimental scene in the 1970s. The presence of Gengras’s brother Cyrus Gengras (who has worked with artists like Kevin Morby, Amen Dunes, and Jessica Pratt) on electric guitar, casting off glistening lead melodies and webs of clean-toned arpeggios, cements the connection to the delay-drenched guitar work of precedents like Manuel Göttsching and Robert Fripp. The album’s zoned atmospheres and slowbuilding tiers of synth call to mind the interplanetary explorations of astral electronic music composers like Klaus Schulze, Michael Stearns, and John Serrie. More than anything in Gengras’s recent catalog, Expressed, I Noticed Silence continues along the arc of more modern post-kosmiche contemporaries including Emeralds, Bitchin Bajas, and Hausu Mountain label-mate Pulse Emitter. The six tracks on Expressed, I Noticed Silence all move past the ve minute mark, and join together to lay out a trajectory through slightly differing geographies that all feel like part of the same world map. This sense of cohesion in both the melodic frameworks and the full menu of voices on display at any moment establishes a dreamlike overarching narrative that seems at once perfectly static and constantly shifting. The album testies to M. Geddes Gengras’s skill not only as a sculptor of tone and texture, but as a storyteller in the medium of electronic music — using the tools at his disposal to conjure complex moods and emotional spaces that lay out vistas looking across zones that approach the distant horizon.

If you should buy this physical album (a novel idea, these days I suppose) you will find that I’ve dedicated Promenade Blue to one Obie “Young” Jessie. Many casual listeners may be unfamiliar with his work, but the entire contour of his musical role is something that informed both my career as well as an overarching spirit of the new LP. Obie was an artist whose voice threaded their way through my entire life, often without my consciousness (as he was a part of a VERY particularly southern Californian mileu of ‘floating’ singers with Richard berry, Jesse belvin, thurston Harris - that you’d hear on lamplighters, robins, coasters, sharps, rivingtons singles but.... rarely with attribution, like a jazz horn player, you could start to pick them out by their sonority, their delivery) until a certain period: I listened intently and solitarily to, then danced in night clubs and bars to, and frankly live a life —— to find myself face to face at a pre-revue rehearsal with in 2017. My good friend and night life warlock Jonathan Toubin was throwing his ten year anniversary bash, and together with myself and Todd-o-phonic of WFMU had put together a dream team of REAL LIFE performers from battered and thundering 45s he had spun at his legendary SOUL CLAP parties. Now this lineup of legends would be backed by me and my band. I had spent a great deal of year leading up to that time wandering through the world being mistaken for being from somewhere else. The perfect storm of a..... rising and perfected regional brand identity in other places (worn like oversized belt buckles or ‘gritty, real’ track marks) and what I could only describe as a lifelong superficial conception of the Californian identity had me thinking about where everyone was from, what’s a regional identity anyways? Especially in this digitally flattened era. Like a lot of my songs, listeners need to understand the deadpan blues nature of my lyrics - indebted deeply to what I realized was the Angeleno mileu of Jessie’s generation. Irreverent, sly, simple. It’s not for nothing the run up tape of my very first tune, ‘some place’, blips to life with me and backing vocalist childhood friend riffing on ‘have love will travel’.... the other tune Richard berry hit with was “Louie Louie”, concocted with the Rilleras brothers at a dance in Santa Ana, California. How funny, I thought, would it be to turn this little droll talking blues i had been demoing into an off handed delivered ‘anthem’ chorus? How Californian? At the aforementioned rehearsal, in 2017, Obie and I struck up a conversation about geography. He got very excited about myself and my best buddy, doc (who you will find as second guitar this entire album) being from right next to Long Beach. Through rehearsals, a soul Queen told my drummer to play “more New Orleans”, and the hipoisie New York rock legend vaped dispassionately in the corner as we ran down his 1970s classics. Jessie though, after we ripped through his second (!!) unplanned addition to his set... he turned to his nephew with a mile wide smile and said “See!! I told you these guys could play - They’re from California!”

IL1299 "Monterey b/w Straight Love Affair" Pressing Quantity: 300 UPC: 810874025623

“Monterey” is a ‘lost’ track from the song book of Nature Boy himself, Eden Ahbez. There existed only a demo acetate recording of a member (John Harris) of the cult Los Angeles doo-wop group the Rivingtons which made its way to my ears via my Californio brethren Matt Correia (Allah-las). In a way, it feels divined to have been delivered to me by these means, cut at the historic Western 2 studios in Hollywood, and played with such esteemed and familiar musical company - the rhythm section of Brian Lang on bass and Eric Jackowitz on drums, pianist Lee Pardini, second guitar John Anderson, and lead tenor saxophonist Mando Dorame. Pay close attention to the undertow pull as the band crests and the pre-solo bars drop into Mando’s loamy lead. I hope it takes you far away, but not too far from shore… A new documentary is set to release, and this feels like an excellent time to join the pantheon of artists who have cut Eden’s material. https://www.edenahbez.com/about-the-film

Bio Tel Aviv’s Buttering Trio have been making the desert blossom with funk for a decade now — and their most vivid, colorful oasis has revealed itself: Foursome, the band’s latest LP, out July 2022. The trio began their exploration a decade ago as traveling beatmakers in a Berlin basement peering over the edges of each other’s musical minds. They have since released a string of deeply-grooving albums and toured the world, all while maintaining a sense of open possibility: if it slaps, it stays. And since 2018, the Trio’s got a fourth — percussionist Amir Bresler — helping their grooves dive deeper than ever.

About the album Their first full LP with Bresler behind the drums, Foursome emerged from four days in a Tel Aviv studio in 2020. After years of programming grooves, the album is also their first fully live set — every sound was written, arranged and recorded on the spot, blooming spontaneously from jams and then condensed into songs. The album is 12 tracks of sticky-sweet, smoke-filled grooves, as dreamy as they are danceable.

New York-based audiovisual artist death insurance is the first official signee to the hotly anticipated A2B2 Records, started by Death Grips’ founding member, Andy Morin. Fans can now experience the album that the Fader called “eight tracks and 25 minutes of organized noise to gnash your teeth and claw your eyes out to,” on beautiful black and yellow colored vinyl. “i’m in your walls” is not just a first release for A2B2 Reecords, but a landmark release in the mutant scene zeitgeist that has overtaken the NY underground.
