Professional wrestling interprets the universe better than any ideology I have ever seen. I live for professional wrestling. I avoid competition, I think competition is ugly. I have never been into what people refer to as “sports.” I love drama. And that’s what rasslin’ is — there’s no competition because the ending is already determined. When people start talking to me about it being fake, I tell them when you fall from the top rope to the arena floor, your head has just gone eighteen feet into concrete. You can’t fake that. You gotta be able to take it. And that’s what those old guys could do, they’re the toughest bastards on earth. In Memphis in the late ’50s and early ’60s, we had Sputnik Monroe, the greatest wrestler in the world, who was an incredible role model. His rules of wrestling, which I try to follow as my rules of life, are “Win if you can, lose if you must, always cheat, and if they take you out, go out tearing down the ring.” Ha! There’s a natural bond between rock’n’roll and wrestling, especially in Memphis. It was very strong. Just the flamboyance of Sputnik, Jackie Fargo, The Great Bolo, The Graham Brothers — it was all like rock’n’roll. The best wrestling I have ever seen in my life was broadcast from a Quonset hut in Dyersburg, this little one— horse town in North Tennessee. They had two or three old— school wrestlers and a bunch of skinny kids, and it was fucking dynamite. It was beautiful. Of course, the worse it is, the better I like it. They had two hand— held cameras. The music was over— modulated and it would be sheer distortion. The ring announcer was over—dubbed so it was out of synch. He would describe something that hadn’t even happened yet. It was great. Nowhere else but Memphis would they have let it gone on the air. — JIM DICKINSON, transmission from the Zebra Ranch, April 2006

PATRICE RUSHEN - REMIND ME
THE CLASSIC ELEKTRA RECORDINGS 1978-1984
Strut present the first definitive retrospective of an icon of 1970s and ‘80s soul, jazz and disco, Patrice Rushen, covering her peerless 6-year career with Elektra / Asylum from 1978 to 1984. THE
Joining Elektra after three albums with jazz label Prestige, Patrice had shown prodigious talent at an early age and had first broken through after winning a competition to perform at the Monterrey Jazz Festival of 1972. By the time of the recordings on this collection, she had become a prolific and in-demand session musician and arranger on the West coast, appearing on over 80 recordings for other artists. She joined the Elektra / Asylum roster in 1978 as they launched a pop / jazz division alongside visionaries like Donald Byrd and Grover Washington, Jr. “The idea was to create music that was good for commercial radio / R&B,” Patrice explains. “We were all making sophisticated dance music, essentially.”
CLASSIC ELEKTRA RECORDINGS 1978-1984
DEFINITIVE 3LP COMPILATION OF CLASSICS, 12” VERSIONS AND ORIGINAL SAMPLES REMASTERED FROM ORIGINAL TAPES BY THE CARVERY INCLUDES FULL INTERVIEW WITH PATRICE RUSHEN + RARE PHOTOS
Drawing on some of the leading musicians in L.A. like saxophonist Gerald Albright, drummer “Ndugu” Chancler and bassman Freddie Washington and keeping an open minded approach from her training in classical, jazz and soundtrack scores, Patrice’s music was a different, more intricate proposition to many of the soul artists of the time. “L.A. musicians were not so locked into tradition,” she continues. “None of us were accustomed to limitation and the record label left us to take our own direction.” Early classics like ‘Music Of The Earth’ and ‘Let’s Sing A Song Of Love’ were among Patrice’s first as a lead vocalist before her ‘Pizzazz’ album landed in 1979, featuring the unique disco of ‘Haven’t You Heard’ and one of her greatest ballads, ‘Settle For My Love’. “Although ballads make you feel more vulnerable as an artist because they are often personal, I think listeners relate to that sincerity,” she reflects. By now, Patrice’s records were supremely arranged and produced as her confidence as an all-round writer, producer, arranger and performer grew. Slick dancefloor anthem ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ and the ‘Posh’ album in 1980 led to her landmark album ‘Straight From The Heart’ two years later. Receiving little support from her label, Patrice and her production team personally funded a promo campaign for the first single from it, ‘Forget Me Nots’. It went on to peak at no. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album was later Grammy-nominated, while the track became a timeless anthem and popular sample, inspiring Will Smith’s theme for the film ‘Men In Black’ and George Michael’s ‘Fastlove’.
Patrice’s final album for Elektra, ‘Now’ kept the bar high with sparse, synth-led songs including ‘Feel So Real’ and ‘To Each His Own’. It concluded a golden era creatively for Patrice which remains revered by soul and disco aficionados the world over. ‘Remind Me’ features all of Patrice Rushen’s chart singles, 12” versions and popular sample sources on one album for the first time. Formats included a 3LP set and 1CD fully remastered by The Carvery from the original tapes. Both formats include an exclusive new interview with Patrice Rushen and rare photos. Dave Douglas SHOWING UP / THE POWER OF THE VOTE “Showing Up. That’s what so many of us did over the past year. Change is coming, and it feels like we’re collectively waking up to the bigger, more fundamental changes that need to happen. We won’t all agree about everything, but there is a sense of common purpose regarding the dangers of our current situation.” – Dave Douglas on ENGAGE “Douglas wrote Uplift as an assessment of, and prescription for, the current political climate of the United States. You can hear all the turmoil, zeal, and soul-searching that’s playing out across the country in every measure.” – JazzTimes on UPLIFT

Hamell on Trial
Choochtown (20th Anniversary Edition) Street Date: Tracklist
Ed Hamell on Choochtown I was living in Brooklyn, constantly on the road, and been dropped from my major label deal on Mercury/Universal. I really had nothing to lose and I was very inspired, if I remember, by the movie Pulp Fiction and the Biggie Smalls record: Ready To Die. I recorded anywhere I could. My friend Billy Nicgorski had an analog one inch studio in his basement, his younger brother had a band and I would use them. I also did a bunch of it in my basement in Brooklyn which had a dirt floor and I set the recording gear up on plastic paint pails. Used them as drums sometimes too. I released it on my own label Such-A-Punch and it got licensed to Evangeline in the UK where it got rave reviews and established my career over there. After all the press I got for my first two albums on a major I couldn’t get shit over here in the States, only that CMJ magazine which took their silliness pretty seriously who basically said, “We don’t know what it is but it’s art.” Duh. I’m pretty proud of all my records, I’ve been very lucky in that I’ve always been able to maintain complete creative control but this one I was particularly proud of because every inch of it, from the recording which one track as you’ll see was recorded on my boom box, to the artwork, was all mine.

THE QUIET TEMPLE The Quiet Temple is an amorphous collective grounded by Soulsaver’s Rick Machin and multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood, featuring a revolving cast of members from Stereolab, Spiritualized, and Julian Cope. The self-titled full length debut will come out on July 5 via Wichita Recordings. The Lp’s six tracks move from the languorous lysergic shuffle of lead single “The Lat Opium Den (On Earth”)” to the beatific - almost Balearic - lazy grooves of “ the Bible Black. Self described as their “experimental cosmic-pysyche-jazz-krautrock-post-punk-dub record” gives way to something far more menacing and visionary of Talk Talk into unapologetic cosmic territory.

LP (W/DOWNLOAD CODE) GENRE:...............................................................R&B/SOUL N O EX P O R T For the better par t of 15 years Helsinki's own Timmion Records has released some of the most exciting soul sides happening today. To help spread the Timmion love, Daptone staffers and brass made a list of their favorite Timmion tracks from the past couple years. Presented here is Bad Education, Vol. I, the culmination of weeks of deliberation and infighting (mainly due to their unusually high batting average) - 10 tracks that best represent the eclectic wealth of soulful riches Timmion Records has to offer. Side 1 one gets cracking with "This is What Love Looks Like", a mid-tempo, breezy dancer by NYC's own Carlton Jumel Smith whose recent album, 1634 Lexington Ave, is poised to be one of the top Soul releases of 2019. Johnny Benavidez, the Texas-born, California-raised balladeer showcases his hear tfelt falsetto with "Tell Me That You Love Me" - a beat ballad of the highest order, and a must for fans of Texas giants The Commands. Pratt & Moody, a vocal duo who have been making waves for sometime in their native Finland, ser ve up another hear t-wrenching, head-bobbing ballad with "Lost, Lost, Lost". Picking up the tempo we have the undisputed queen of Finnish Soul, Miss Nicole Willis! The New York native is already a household name on the UK Nor thern Soul scene, but now it's time for this expat to make some noise Stateside. Closing out the side we have the leather-clad-fringed flute phenom know as Ernie "Scorpio Man' Hawks. The Scorpio Walk's deep groove laced with murmuring fuzz bass and surf guitar rushes the listener like a maniacal villain in an ar t house spy movie. Side 2 two packs even more soulful punches, star ting with the unreleased track "Until You’re Mine" by Wanda Felicia. Equal par ts slick, Big City street harmony and raw, southern soul, the track evokes the ver y best of Fame-era Candi Staton. Next up, we have Bobby Oroza whose featured track "This Love" took the Soul scene by storm upon its release in 2016. His understated, earnest vocal let's the sparse arrangement and heavy beat take you to a place where the sun shines bright and the low-riders shine brighter where the Sunday afternoon sun dances off the gold flecks of custom paint jobs. "Bad Education" the funky, afro-latin soul monster with a message (whose title graces the cover of this album) tips the hat to legends like Joe Bataan and Ray Barreto. The debut single by Bardo Mar tinez, already known for his work with Chicano Batman, lays down a fier y indictment of the educational system defining it as a mouthpiece for the militar y industrial complex. A heavy tune with a heavier message! From top to bottom Bad Education, Vol. I is a feast for discerning funk & soul freaks alike!

Marc Bolan - The Home Demos
Easy Action 5CD EARS145 5060446072103
n amazing insight into the workings of Marc Bolan, here we have over 100 tracks of his own personal home recordings. Marc purchased the best tape recorders of the day as early as 1970 to record his ideas on. Included are work in progress versions of many tracks that went onto become global hits such as Get It On, Jeepster, Metal Guru, Telegram Sam, The Groover, Truck On (Tyke), Thunderwing, Sunken Rags and many more. Nearly all of the other tracks were never issued during Marc’s lifetime. Presented in a clam shell box with a booklet featuring full liner notes by Andrew Gardner of the Bolan Society and designed by Bolan fan and top designer Les Clark. Most of these recordings were stolen from Marc & Gloria’s home literally the day after Marc died. Audio restored and mastered by Anders Peterson at Ghost Sound in Sweden, royalties from sales of this set will help fund the Marc Bolan School of Music through Gloria’s charity The Light of Love Foundation. 4 of the discs have been issued on limited edition vinyl pressings but disc 5 remains exclusive to this box set.

Tristan has always used conceptual frameworks to facilitate the writing process and ‘Delphi’ is no exception. This time Tristan worked with his girlfriend Olivia Dreisinger to develop a fictional character: the young lovelorn Delphi. She is represented throughout by a recurring melody, with the album developing the story around her. Deeper than this however, ‘Delphi’ represents the hurdles faced by modern lovers, and those felt personally by Tristan, as the album encompasses a wide range of his emotions. The character ’Delphi’ finds solace in escaping to a place, her namesake, the ancient Greek city. She gets lost in her fantasy, realising it is not as she had idealised. “Olivia and I started making the album cover as soon as I knew what direction ‘Delphi’ was headed in. I took objects that had significance to me at the time of production and physically recreated them as “Delphi world” objects, so that the album’s narrative and each track are represented in the cover photo. If you flip the album over, there is a computer rendering by Paulin Rogues of the two landmarks in the ancient city of Delphi - not quite ancient or modern Delphi, somehow real life but also fantastical.”
Delphi is an album where the real and the fantastic combine, where functional club music meets evocative piano miniatures. “I ended up working on ‘Delphi’ for over a year, where it developed and grew in parallel to my own life. It became story-like, and I embraced the story-like quality of it.” Perhaps the story of ‘Delphi’ is the story of our own lives. PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. BEN LEVIN BEFORE ME
BEFORE ME is the second album from brilliant young Cincinnati-based blues pianist/singer/ songwriter BEN LEVIN, featuring performances by his musical friends and heroes – guitarist Bob Margolin, harmonica ace Bob Corritore, and (King Records drummer) Philip Paul. “After garnering two Blues Blast Music Award nominations for his first release, Ben’s STREET DATE: 7/19/19 Blues, Ben Levin returns with another enticing package that features his mesmerizing piano playing, relaxed vocals, and a half dozen noteworthy original songs… Listening to this album, you start to think that Levin is the product of decades of long nights in dark clubs and smoky juke joints. He has that sound, a mature perspective that comes from totally immersing yourself in the music until it permeates the deepest recesses of your soul. The reality is that Ben Levin is just finishing his first year of college. But, make no mistake, his musical apprenticeship is over. Lea Bertucci ‘Resonant Field’ Third NNA full-length album from NYC-based composer, saxophonist, and sound artist Lea Bertucci.
It is with tremendous pleasure that we announce ‘Resonant Field’, the brand new full-length album from New York-based sound artist and composer Lea Bertucci. Following up her critically acclaimed 2018 NNA full-length ‘Metal Aether’, Lea continues her devotion to the exploration of physical spaces by way of sound, channeled through her alto saxophone. Where her previous work investigated a variety of locations around the globe, ‘Resonant Field’ narrows her focus to one space in particular - the Marine A Grain Elevator at Silo City in Buffalo, New York. Using her horn, Lea intends to awaken certain resonances within the space, which have laid dormant and forgotten for decades. In this sense, ‘Resonant Field’ is the documentation of an event, a human’s profound personal interaction with an inanimate space through the medium of sound.
Release Date: July 19th, 2019 Tracklist: 1. Wind Piece (4:54) 2. Warp and Weft (12:53)* 3. Resonant Field (17:32)* 4. Deliquescence (2:26) (*Singles & Suggested tracks) File Under: Experimental / Electro-Acoustic / Modern Classical / Noise Label: NNA Tapes Catalog #: NNA120 UPC: Vinyl - 634457821712 Formats: Special Edition Vinyl LP, Digital RIYL: Tony Conrad, La Monte Young, Alvin Lucier, Harry Partch, Lou Harrison, Terry Riley, Sarah Davachi, Eli Keszler, Tigue, Battle Trance, Olivia Block Selling Points (Special Edition Vinyl LP): • Screen printed jacket artwork with silver metallic ink • Special insert with detailed liner notes from the artist • Limited edition of 400 copies • Includes digital download coupon
The decommissioned structure at Silo City is a massive, cavernous space filled with large cast concrete cylinders, measuring 18 feet wide and 130 feet tall. A grain silo that was once active, noisy, loud, and filled with kinetic energy now lays dormant as a silent, hulking concrete corpse, as is the case with many industrial sites across the United States. Through playing her saxophone inside this structure, Bertucci’s goal was to excite and activate the space by playing certain pitches and extended techniques. By engaging with the acoustics in this manner, particularly the 12 seconds of natural decay, Bertucci is able to reimagine the saxophone as a polyphonic instrument, creating unique effects of microtonality and complex rhythmic phenomena, facilitated by the distinct delay as the sound bounces from one end of the silo to the other. Her microtonal playing moves delicately through the octaves, creating an interactive, responsive dance up and down the frequency scale. The extreme density that forms from these overlapping tones fills the ears and head with an eternal buzz, while also revealing an array of fluttering psychoacoustic phenomenon to the listener. Due to the specific architecture and sonic conditions of the Marine A Grain Elevator, a space where saxophone has likely never been played before, Lea has captured new, never-before-heard sounds that truly cannot be duplicated by any other means. Her playing is improvisatory and reactionary to the space’s unique acoustics, and by allowing imperfections to exist within the recordings, the compositions evoke a rawness and emotion free of premeditation or calculation, surrendering herself to the bestial, monumental atmosphere and presence of Silo City. Because of this, the compositions feel like “collaborations” with the space itself… a duet in a sense. This formation of an intimate connection with her surroundings is both scientific and spiritual, putting Lea in a duality of roles as both an archaeologist of sound, and a sonic medium as well. The fact that these recordings took place during the partial solar eclipse of 2017 even further contributes to the ceremonial, ritual quality of the work, making ‘Resonant Field’ a profound, industrial meditation on beauty, emptiness, and the deep melancholy of forgotten spaces. “an improvising alto saxophonist and composer whose music is a kind of scientific sound poetry.” –New York Times “she devoutly mines the kaleidoscopic sonic possibilities of the saxophone, augmenting it with touches of electronics, field recordings, and processed instruments” –NPR Music “Lea Bertucci is a composer in conversation with the world around her. She regards physical spaces as though they were her collaborators... Harmonics accumulate and stretch toward infinity. Bertucci’s noise feels untethered and limitless.” –Pitchfork

Andy McCumber and Indiana Laub started Friend of My Youth for the first time in Santa Barbara, CA in late 2013 and played our first show on New Year's Eve. With Laub moving in six months, the band played a bunch of shows and made a tape as fast as possible. Laub moved to Corvallis, OR that summer and the band was supposed to be dead but two years later, the pair decided to start playing again despite the 900 mile distance. After another couple years of flying back and forth to play shows and write songs in borrowed practice spaces, and the addition of Spencer Burnette-McGrath on bass the band recorded Telling in their living room. Telling is about processing and reprocessing memory and trauma and weird feelings over and over until the point of feeling like an alien around everyone you know. It's also about being obsessed with science fiction and alternate timelines. Many of the songs came out of the idea that maybe we have to repeat harmful and unhealthy cycles forever without even realizing what we're doing, across generations, or maybe we don’t? Track Listing: 1. Soft Sci-Fi 2. Ancestral 3. Tortoiseshell 4. Thrall 5. Graduation Card 6. Tourist Town 7. Dark Charizard 8. Zelda 9. Cobalt 10.Half Home

LOST SOULS OF SATURN ‘LOST SOULS OF SATURN’ R&S present the eponymous, debut, full length album transmission from Lost Souls Of Saturn. Epic in scope, time and space, this multidimensional mind trip is for fans of Mark Leckey’s ‘Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore’, David Morales’ Red Zone dubs, Don Cherry’s ‘Organic Music Society’, The Orb’s ‘Ultraworld’ and KLF’s ‘Space’ and much more besides. This ambient house masterpiece combines flavours gathered from across the galaxy, stewing them up into a delicious primordial soup. Old sci-fi soundtracks, acid, free jazz, avant garde, musique concrete, world music and more all whirl around an underground-dance-music axis. Primarily LSOS are Seth Troxler and Phil Moffa, plus further opaque participants congregating to combine music, imagery, and storytelling into an inextricably linked whole, all wrapped-up in a philosophy of their own making. Attempting something creatively that’s above-and-beyond, LSOS explore new ways to open doors of perception and challenge the reality vs. simulation paradigm, whilst capturing the spirit of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Philip K. Dick and Sun Ra within their music, live experiences and films. These spiritual, psychoactive aural vibrations resonate for a long distance, all the way back to something deeper and more enchanting than the prosaicism of modern life:

RIYL: Arca, Demdike Stare, Haxan Cloak, Jlin, Actress, Container, Emptyset, DJ Rashad, Fire-Toolz, Andy Stott, DJ Paypal, Foodman, Amnesia Scanner, Autechre, Vatican Shadow. RXM Reality has shared the stage with Eartheater, Laurel Halo, Actress, & RP Boo. “...more stylistic divergence than some electronic musicians manage in a career, swerving from dancefloor-ready transfiguration of the glacial staccato of Mark Fell’s Sensate Focus project, to melees of harsh melodic overdrive of Autechre circa Confield, to warmly familiar descending garage organ chords.” - Wire (Issue 418) “There are quick flashes of nearly every genre of electronic music under the sun, from footwork to vaporwave—but it’s paradoxically more rewarding when you sit still and just disappear inside it, trying to predict every one of Meegan’s unpredictable left turns. [RXM Reality] plays like a mini encyclopedia of dance music, containing enough passing references to satisfy genre lifers and enough hairpin turns to keep dilettantes stunned.” - Bandcamp (Essential Releases - March 2018) “If UK grime sonics pummeled through a distorted pipe straight into the frontal lobe are your speed, then [RXM Reality] might make for a pleasant afternoon.” - Tiny Mix Tapes
of kinetic IDM, grimy industrial electronics, and intricately spatialized textural collage. DEViL WORLD WiDE, his second release with Hausu Mountain, builds on the precedent established by Panic Cycle (HAUSMO72, 2018), as Meegan steers his hybrid rig of hardware samplers and software systems through a series of rhythmic sketches that are as transfixing as they are claustrophobic. While RXM Reality builds his tracks over a rough grid that keeps one foot rooted in danceable rhythms, bursts of jagged percussion counteract the groove while noise debris drips between morphing synthetic elements. Individual synth voices serve as both anti-melodic lead lines and rhythmic markers akin to drum patterns, quivering their way through his tracks in various states of granular disintegration. When he eases back on the level of density and allows his sound sources to melt into swathes of silence, specters of beat structures carry on in lurching, start-and-stop rhythms. RXM Reality’s music draws inspiration from his urban surroundings in Chicago as much as from a growing canon of dystopian audio and visual touchstones that inch closer and closer to real life as time goes on. DEViL WORLD WiDE’s fractal, continually splintered approach to sound design recalls the work of modern luminaries like Arca and Actress, two influences Meegan cited as formative to his expanding conceptions of production and composition. Like fellow members of the Hausu Mountain roster such as FireToolz, Khaki Blazer, or Bonnie Baxter, the music of RXM Reality toys with building blocks of dark humor and chaotic irreverence, as tracks break into unexpected shifts in mood or shed any semblance of legible rhythm on a dime to explode into the territory of pure texture. A pummeling passage of breakbeats might slide into a patch of 8-bit squelch, while a brief flash of bouncy, major-key melody might herald the waves of feedback rushing in to wash out the mix. With track titles that land between the diction of dependence (“The Enabler,” “Addict”) and inner serenity (“Totally Stress Free,” “Prayers to Fall Asleep in Perfect Peace”), DEViL WORLD WiDE offers hints at the motivations that orbit Meegan’s art. In practice, RXM Reality’s tracks transcend our mundane daily existence and transmute his internal turmoil and composure into pulsing networks of sound as complex as the emotions that inspired them.

After snatching a record deal due to the brute strength of a single rehearsal, The Runaways proceeded to change the face (and gender) of rock and roll with the release of their 1976 debut. Full of tough, snarling tales of misbehavior and anthems of offbeat adolescence, the album established these juvenile idols and remains a source of inspiration for the next generation of rebels. Includes the delectable “Cherry Bomb,” “American Nights,” a venomous VU cover, & so much more! The Runaways is the sound of a handful of untested chemicals being poured into a beaker and exploding. It's the sound of a knee-high platform boot stomping down onto the top of a guitar amp, of a gang of warriors, of defiance. It's the sound of a band too good to last — a band so sure of its chops that it started its record with "Cherry Bomb," the first of many hits Joan Jett would help pen in her career, and refused to back down from there. Decades of documentaries, biopics and interviews have revealed just how much the group endured just to get into the studio and on stage, but damn if it wasn't already a chilling experience to listen to Cherie Currie wail about her "Secrets" and whisper back and forth with Jett on the album's final track, "Dead End Justice." From start to finish, The Runaways captures a band that tapped into the zeitgeist of its era with curiosity and passion, chugging power chords, snarls and screams. Though it was under-appreciated when it was released, it captures a moment in quintessential '70s rock. —Andrea Swensson (Minnesota Public Radio) from NPR’s 150 Greatest Albums made by Women

Multiculturalism rises hand-in-hand with racial tensions, and politicians seem powerless to even bring people within earshot of their convoluted message. It’s time for a different perspective. On his second studio album, More Arriving, Sarathy Korwar blasts out his own vibrant, pluralistic missive for the world to hear. This is not necessarily a record of unity; it’s an honest reflection of Korwar’s experience of being an Indian in a divided Britain. Recorded over two and a half years in India and the UK, More Arriving draws on the nascent rap scenes of Mumbai and New Delhi, incorporating spoken word with Korwar’s own Indian classical and jazz instrumentation. This is a record born of confrontation; one for our confrontational times. With this album, Korwar expands his politicised narrative to envelop the entire diaspora. “This is a modern brown record. The kind of record that a contemporary Indian living in the UK for the past 10 years would make,” Korwar says. “This is what Indian music sounds like to me right now.” It all begins with the title: “More Arriving comes from the scaremongering around Brexit,” Korwar says. “It’s a tonguein-cheek play on the fact that there are more people coming and you’ll have to deal with it!” Through this defiance, Korwar takes clear pride in the knotty mix of his identity – harking back to the new India of the Mumbai hip-hop kids, as well as identifying with London’s cultural diversity. “I want the idea of brown pride to come through,” he says. “My voice is one amongst a thousand, but this record is a snapshot of something much greater than myself. It’s the chance to send a message.”

Filled with wit, color and mystery, this bizarre suite is among the weirdest music Zorn has ever created and will appeal to only the most open-minded of listeners. Not for the faint of heart. Description:
De Lorians ...and sometimes it just turns out that the newest members of the freak music family are a bunch of long-haired Japanese twenty-somethings playing Zappa-loving Canterbury-inspired blissed-out spiritual jazz rippers. If you had that on your predictions list, right on, you’ll be extra amped. But either way, meet De Lorians, Tokyo’s newest fire music exports, by way of their self-titled debut. Grown from the always-heady Tokyo music scene and led by Takefumi Ishida, playing sax and synth, all five De Lorians contribute material to what they call pataphysical music. Ranging in age from 22 to 27, the five De Lorians tap into a library of ideas from their precursors, less in retro-loving emulation than for alchemical strategy.

The seven tracks here burst with overstuffed Weasels Ripped My Flesh-style action: bonkers horn arrangements, savage guitar solos, constant movement, through-composed sections, improv, surreality, and the occasional peaceful woodwind-dabbled valley. No singing, no poodle play, just constant surprises, rich vibes, and heavy fun. With the whole album packed into 32 zig-zagging minutes, it’s a compact and powerful first statement for a young band exploding with ideas, and with a lot more under the hood. At De Lorians’ monthly gigs, there are plenty of more surprises, too. There’s ample improvisation, of course, but some nights they disassemble the sections of their songs, piecing them into new suites that might run longer than the length of their studio debut. Think of this album, perhaps as their (temporarily) definitive ur-suite, a progfusion dream of inside-out rhythms and catchy af melodies. Recorded at the Tsubame Studio in Tokyo in September 2018, De Lorians is timeless highenergy unity and barely controlled propulsion, exploding soon from a portal near you.

This is an album about Donald Trump - his dubious rise in politics, his capricious behaviour while in office and the motley cast of characters he has surrounded himself with. It’s not exactly a protest record, though it is shot through with anger. It’s definitely not a joke, though some of it is darkly funny. It is a tragedy and it is a farce. The songs are sung from different points of view, almost as if it’s a Donald Trump funk musical. One advisor sells Trump on the idea of a border wall. Another one feels he can’t quit because of the chaos that might follow. Rex Tillerson fumes at his plummeting status. Psychiatrists fret about the President’s mental stability. Hillary Clinton laments her loss. Trump himself brags and equivocates in his own unique, blustering style. 45 was written and recorded in a little less than two months during gaps in the schedule at Field Music’s studio in Sunderland. It was inspired by Bob Woodward’s book Fear, articles in the Washington Post, The New Yorker and The New York Times and by Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight. It was also inspired by James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Otis Redding and Free.

Having broken a decade's silence with 2016's 'System', LA-based electronic musician Joseph Fraioli, a.k.a. Datach’i, returns this summer with his eighth album 'Bones'. Released on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint, ‘Bones’ features 12 tracks of mind expanding electronica, once again recorded on his custom-built Eurorack modular system. Much like its predecessor, 'Bones' manages to make the most of the possibilities modular systems offer, whilst avoiding their many pitfalls that can often turn such music into little more than a dry academic exercise. Indeed 'Bones' is a remarkably intimate album, written and recorded in the time following his father's death, and reflects this intense period of personal change in Joseph's life. "Creating this music was a therapy of sorts," Joseph recalls. "It was almost like a close friend being there for me, and it's something that I hope others can perhaps utilize in the same way."

The connection to his father is something that is reflected not just in the emotional intensity of 'Bones', but in the actual production itself. "My father and I were very close," he explains. "Whilst he was sick with cancer I bought him a guitar as he wanted to learn how to play, just to have something to do while he was getting treated. After he passed away my mother gave me the guitar to have as a sort of memory of him. I had the idea to record some sounds and music on the guitar and load it onto granular sample players on the modular synth so I could make new music from those sounds as a sort of tribute to my dad. You can hear some of those sounds on a few of the tracks here like 'Arrivals', 'Motion in the Living Room' and 'Undimension'." The resulting album grapples with the intensity of these emotions. But for all their weight, tracks like 'Saugerties Road', ‘Rockledge 3A’ and ‘Antumalal’ transform that heaviness into something warm and comforting whilst the aforementioned 'Arrivals' or ‘Wand’ ultimately achieve some kind of escape velocity and soar. Even though 'Bones' is about endings and finding closure, it also looks forward to new beginnings. "It was something very much on my mind throughout recording this album," he relates, "ends being beginnings and beginnings being the end. Cycles of time and how time works, it's all reflected throughout the album right down to how the tracks are ordered." Ranging from blissful ambience and guileless, starry eyed melodies, to intricate claustrophobic rhythms that forever sound close to collapsing in on themselves before expanding into bold new patterns, 'Bones' is the work of a producer who, twenty years on from his debut, continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.

The self-titled album presents a juicy suite of elegantly-orchestrated lo-fi jazz instrumentals germinated from home recording experiments by the group’s producer/arranger Will Miller. Applying a compositional approach attributable to his experience producing hip-hop beats as much as his studies at Oberlin Conservatory, Miller built melodic sketches on foundations of samples & loops before bringing pieces to the group for collective development. After integrating recordings of the full band into his home-produced impressions (not unlike IARC predecessors Jeff Parker and Makaya McCraven), he overdubbed another dozen friends into the mix (including Brandee Younger, Sen Morimoto, Carter Lang, Knox Fortune and Macie Stewart) before finalizing the arrangements. In Miller’s modest editing room, Resavoir grew from experiment into epic opus recalling the lush, psychedelic soul jazz orchestrations of David Axelrod & Charles Stepney… but in the sampled-laden style of Yesterday’s New Quintet, Broadcast, or Thundercat, with a lyrical affinity for minimalism & texturalism, like trumpeter/composers Jon Hassell & Justin Walter.

n its third full-length Remembering The Rockets, Strange Ranger continues to excel at translating the way intimacy can feel so overwhelmingly gigantic. With a dozen releases across its 10 years as a band, the Philly-via-Portland-via-Montana group has traversed genres, moods and textures while maintaining one important throughline: an exploration of closeness.
016’s double-LP Rot Forever was a 72-minute freakout that paired Built To Spill grandiosity with early Modest Mouse intensity. On the 2017 follow-up Daymoon (Tiny Engines), Strange Ranger hung up the distortion pedals and traded caustic yelps for Alex G-esque croons. It was a synth-adorned, insular bedroom-pop record that floated rather than soared, and the band opted for lyrical impressionism over the hyper-specific outbursts of the debut. arontman Isaac Eiger’s writing style reads like a loose assembly of quotes from conversations he’s had with others spliced with his own, private introspections. He is a modern master of conveying the anxiety and uncertainty of growing older through a mixture of childhood nostalgia and interpersonal tidbits. There’s plenty of that on Remembering The Rockets, but after all of these years of singing about Eiger’s own coming-of-age story, the album approaches the quandary of whether he’ll ever be able to impart that process—through which he’s reaped so much artistic joy and curiosity—onto someone else.
F
or a topic as severe as ecological collapse affecting his own parental aspirations—as well as other melancholy ruminations on loneliness, the passing of time, and the complications of emotional intimacy—Strange Ranger still ended up making the lushest, smoothest, and most pleasingly hypnotic album of its career. “Strange Ranger brings together a handful of classic indie rock influences: there’s early Death Cab for Cutie in the slow, longing backdrop, some early Modest Mouse in the vocal delivery, and a little Microphones in the intentionally lo-fi recording.” — BROOKLYNVEGAN “In the tradition of fellow Northwest acts like Modest Mouse, Strange Ranger make music that ranges from quiet and personal to boisterous and aggressive, using a broad palette of sounds to enhance their down-tempo rock ’n’ roll beats.” — THE VILLAGE VOICE

Ami Dang fuses sitar, voice, and electronics to create east-meets-west, ambient/trance music. On the experimental instrumental album Parted Plains, she draws inspiration from South Asian and Middle Eastern folktales, specifically, the four tragic romances of Punjab, Sohni Mahiwal, Sassi Punnun, Heer Ranjha, and Mirza Sahiba; Flora Annie Steel’s Tales of the Punjab: Folklore of India, and selected stories from One Thousand and One Nights. Galvanized by the Western interpretations of these stories, Parted Plains unfolds as a new sort of soundtrack for a yet-to-be written folktale that is neither Eastern nor Western, not traditional or contemporary--but somewhere in between. Iconic, innovative and internationally renowned force in avant-garde music The Art Ensemble of Chicago released their 50th anniversary celebratory album We Are On The Edge in April, and Erased Tapes are honoured to announce the vinyl edition of this exceptional body of work. Led by surviving founding members Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, these brand new recordings involve a staggering array of contemporary artists ranging from across the jazz, experimental and improvised music spheres; from the visionary poet and musician Moor Mother, trumpeters Fred Berry and Hugh Ragin, who have performed with Mitchell for over five and four decades, to bassist Jaribu Shahid, supreme cellist Tomeka Reid, celebrated flute virtuoso Nicole Mitchell and the extraordinary voice of Rodolfo CordovaLebron. The vinyl edition, due for release on July 26th, will be available as a double album featuring a meticulous studio session of the newly assembled group of musicians, combining re-recordings of works spanning the last 50 years, some never before recorded, as well as new compositions. The 4-LP special edition also includes their live set recorded at Edgefest, the annual experimental jazz and creative new music festival in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Having witnessed this exciting new formation around Roscoe and Don live at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Robert Raths was compelled to start a conversation with their US label Pi Recordings, based out of New York, and support this project in any way possible. The Art Ensemble of Chicago is a band that has been at the forefront of creative improvised music since forming in 1969. It has also long served as the flagship ensemble of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the august Chicago-based organisation that also fostered the careers of members such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, and Wadada Leo Smith, among many others. Now led by the surviving members Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, their new album We Are On The Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration is not only a commemoration of a half-century of magical music making, but also a loving tribute to the band’s three original members who have passed: Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, and most recently, Joseph Jarman. The greatness of the Art Ensemble has always been the shared commitment of its original members to the total realm of African diasporic music: what they have long-termed “Great Black Music — Ancient to the Future”. Also important are the group’s disparate musical and artistic personalities, comprised of jazz, advanced compositional techniques, theatrical performance, poetry, PanAfrican percussion, all tied together with improvisational flair, a taste for the absurd, and the exploration of pure sound and space. It is this openmindedness – absorbed from the basic tenets of the AACM – that has made the band one of the most important in the history of music. Mitchell and Moye are now 78 and 72, respectively, but one would never guess by their outlook. Mitchell, who was recently named to a prestigious United States Artist Fellowship, is about to retire from his teaching position at Mills College, is most excited when you ask him about his upcoming projects, gushing about a dizzying array of performances, commissions, collaborations, composition ideas, and musical studies and inventions. There is, of course some wistfulness when looking back, particularly with the passing of Joseph Jarman earlier this year, but the overwhelming feeling is anticipation of what is coming next or, as Moye always says, "focus and forward motion". It’s a clarion statement that Mitchell and Moye are intent on ushering The Art Ensemble of Chicago forcefully into its sixth decade. As Moor Mother declares: "We are on the edge!" Previous press for the AEC:
“As vibrant as any of the music the AEC released these past 50 years. Long live the Art Ensemble of Chicago” ★★★★ — All About Jazz “The sheer breadth of the ensemble's expression on We Are on the Edge is staggering, a strident declaration that Mitchell and Moye will carry the AEC's powerful, boundary-less creative ethos full force into its sixth decade” ★★★★ — AllMusic
GRACIE CURRAN COME UNDONE
COME UNDONE was recorded in Gracie Currran’s adopted home town of Memphis, Tennessee, with the help of co-producer/ guitarist Damon Fowler and notable friends and neighbors including Victor Wainwright, Reba Russell, Mark Earley, Doug Woolverton, Pat Harrington and more.
In the five years since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album PROOF OF LOVE, STREET DATE: 7/26/19 Gracie has been packing venues across the country and around the world with her stunning voice, soul shaking delivery, and phenomenally fun live shows.
In this sophomore release, you will hear her stories; shaped by the influence of all the places she’s been. In Gracie’s own words, “This music is the soundtrack of five years on the road – COME UNDONE is the story of losing it all, losing yourself, and hope – the things we do to get by, until we get it all back. Learning to be whole again. I find the more personal I am, the more honest I am with my music, the more people connect with it. It’s in the spaces where we feel most alone, that we are most connected. Everyone goes through heartache, loss, joy, new love –- it’s all part of life– and this is life, through music.” TRACKS: 01. These recordings find Eamon teaming up with a core unit of Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo, Marc Ribot, Sam Prekop) and drums and Devon Hoff (Nels Cline, Xiu Xiu) on bass, with production work by Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple). “Eamon Fogarty has no guile. He is as true as a bird singing in the trees. His music, like life itself, contains the beautiful and the grotesque. Some artists demand love from their audience. I don’t know how or why it works but I love Eamon’s music. I feel protective of it. When something that powerful calls out... you should pick up the phone." − Chris Schlarb, Psychic Temple If someone were to present disturbing news to you in a smooth and dazzling way, you’d expect the effect to be jarring. But that’s not the case with the music of New Hampshire-born composer, lyricist, and singer Eamon Fogarty. As he delivers lyrics imbued with equal parts humor and dread, the rich timbre and sureness of his baritone belie the dark things he’s often singing about. That tension—between beauty and destruction, humor and dread—is the driving force behind Fogarty’s new album, Blue Values, offering an oddly elegant expression of the way we’re all muddling through such tensions all the time. Largely recorded in Long Beach, California, in the confusing, bracing days following the 2016 election, Blue Values is alternately serene and frenetic - composed interludes intermingling with improvised band arrangements. Declassified Department of Energy nuclear test films provided one of the album’s guiding images: Fogarty found himself compulsively watching the films, which show the mundanity and logistics that underlie the atomic enterprise, after a trip to the one-time uranium boomtown of Moab, Utah. We know how the scientists behind the first nuclear weapons regarded their creation—think of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s famous invocation of the Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds”—but what about what’s happened since? How can such destruction come to seem quotidian? How long can you rehearse for apocalypse before you forget there might someday be an opening night? The songs on this album are tinged with such questions about the tenuousness of being human in the 21st century, but they’re also playful and intimate, languorous yet richly orchestrated. The slightly twisted logic of Chad Taylor’s ((Chicago Underground Duo, Marc Ribot, Sam Prekop) drumming complements Devon Hoff’s (Nels Cline, Xiu Xiu) bass-playing, which—like Fogarty’s words—swings between metallic ferocity and extreme gentleness. Recalling at moments the expansive jazz-tinged excursions of Tim Buckley, Blue Values was inspired in part by Alice Coltrane’s spiritual jazz approach to group improvisation, while the album’s instrumentation—especially the prominence of clarinet and bass clarinet—bears the influence of Mark Hollis of Talk Talk’s lone solo album. The record closes with a fiery reworking of Chris Bell’s lovelorn cult anthem “I Am The Cosmos.” The overall effect is of something barely contained, the rhythms of the everyday haunted by the constant threat of explosion. If the apocalypse comes, you’ll want Fogarty’s steady and sincere voice to show you flashes of beauty and guide you through the chaos.

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE OR AUSTRALIA; FLOAT NASHLANTIS TO ALL OTHER EXTANT CONTINENTS!
The annals of Nashville, the 20th century’s immortal Music City, are filled with lore of the legends, as well as tales of the one-shots, the lesser-knowns and the delightful obscurities: singers, writers and players who had a moment, were a step away from stardom or just stood in the same room with the men and women whose names we know. Like the outlaw he defines himself as, Chris Gantry doesn’t really fit in any of those boxes – and 50-plus years since he wrote his first and biggest hit, he’s still writing and singing, having lived to tell the tale of his serpentine but ultimately joyful path, a “Life Well Lived.” Now in his mid-70s, Gantry is still a consummate performer and an inveterate writer, appearing in performance as a lusty, genial man, grateful to have drunk of the experience he’s had, transcendent in that experience and ebullient in the moment of singing it. Nashlantis is the ninth record of Gantry tunes to be released since Chris moved to Nashville in early 1960. Then, he fell in with like-minded others: Shel Silverstein, Kris Kristofferson, Eddie Rabbitt, Vince Matthews and Mickey Newbury – guys working day and night to break into the business, writing and singing their way through the chaos of their youth. It was an intoxicating environment – everyone with his own vision, and Chris’s cosmic stirrings setting him a little apart from the rest. He first got a contract to make an album after Glenn Campbell’s version of his tune “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife” went to number three on the Billboard Country Charts in 1967. Between 1968 and 1975, he recorded three madly diverse records, released by three different imprints – Monument, Magic Carpet (a Monument subsidiary) and ABC Dot. One other session from that time sat in the can for over 40 years, until Drag City put it out in 2017 as At the House of Cash. Meanwhile, the fellow who brought that long-lost project to Drag City, Jerry David DeCicca (a singer and performer in his own right, who also co-produced the Larry Jon Wilson album released back in 2008), was producing a new record for Chris. Recorded in Nashville with the legendary engineer Rob Galbraith, Nashlantis features 11 mesmerizing Gantry performances (“a séance with the Human Spirit” as the producer puts it), retouched in Austin with painterly brevity by DeCicca and Stuart Sikes. Preserving the intimate nature of Chris’s acoustic guitar and vocals, Don Cento, Ryan Jewell, and Marina Peterson wove electric guitar, mandolin, synthesizer, percussion and cello into the fabric of the songs, and guest harmony vocalists Edith Frost and Bill Callahan added stellar contributions as well. Nashlantis is inevitably a reflection on Gantry’s long and winding path through this world – but the vitality of the songwriting stops the music from becoming simple elegy or denouement. Chris’ crafty old-school way with a tune and his smooth melodicism gives him the space to tell his tales with ease; lovers, losers and madmen are depicted with warmth and empathy, a genuine love of the human spirit and the singing chops of a man who’s known tens of thousands of nights of song. Nashlantis is a testament to the career and talent of Chris Gantry – the individualism that set him apart from his earliest days and his openhearted embrace of the unknown. Jerry David DeCicca’s production sound makes for yet another unique chapter in the Chris Gantry catalog – a potent new entry, five decades and more down the line – the improbability of which makes it pure Gantry, all the way.

For innovative composer Max de Wardener, music is a kind of time travel, a means of exploring the antique and the arcane and repurposing them for a forward-facing now. Classically trained, de Wardener is nevertheless renowned for compositions that explore everything from church organs to self-built instruments, as well as electronics and more orthodox chamber configurations. On Kolmar, his debut album for Village Green, the composer teases pure, dream-like sine wave tones from recondite, early-to-mid 20th century instruments like the ondes martenot, the Cristal Baschet and the glass harmonica. De Wardener melds these seamlessly with heavily manipulated Buchla and Oberheim analogue synthesisers, grand pipe organs pitched down several octaves (or with all the stops pushed in “so that the sound collapses”) and miscellaneous exotic but precisely applied acoustic percussion, most of it courtesy of prodigious jazz drummer Moses Boyd.
Yet for all its vintage kit, this is no techno-historical grab bag or sonic museum piece. Nor is it merely an exercise in arch retro-futurism. Kolmar, over two years in the making, is often ravishingly mellifluous and emotionally stirring, while simultaneously retaining the power to disorient – provoking and unsettling the ear as readily as charming and seducing it. Propelled and defined by such playful means of disrupting default creative gesture, Kolmar is the work of a musical adventurer eager to map terra incognita, albeit using some resonant contours of the past. Crucially, de Wardener’s delight in pure tone and ingenuous joy in the sculptural possibility of sound are as palpable as they are persuasive. Time travel has rarely sounded so compelling. Welcome to the brave new old world.
