NICK THE KNIFE & THE ABOMINABLE SHOWMAN RELEASE DATE: JULY 14, 2017 Nick the Knife re-established Nick as a solo artist after Rockpile’s final album (and the only one issued under the group’s name!) Seconds of Pleasure. Rockpile’s Terry Williams and Billy Bremner made contributions, but Nick also transitioned towards his new band “Noise to Go” by bringing back old friend Bobby Irwin, introducing bassist James Eller and Paul Carrack. The album features Nick’s version of “Heart” (Bremner had sung it on the Rockpile album) as well as an eclectic survey of pop music styles from power pop to doo-wop. “My Heart Hurts,” penned with then-wife Carlene Carter, was the lead single. This reissue includes demo versions of “Heart” and “Raining Raining” as well as the rarity (recorded around the same time) “I Got a Job.” Nick Lowe’s Abominable Showman was recorded with his post-Rockpile touring band “Noise to Go.” Following the blueprint of Rockpile, the band also featured a second lead vocalist in erstwhile Ace frontman Paul Carrack and had been featured on the Lowe-produced Carrack album Suburban Voodoo (as well as on this album’s duet “Wish You Were Here”). This unit could play hard driving rock & roll and soulful pop music, all in evidence here from the opener (and concert favorite) “Raging Eyes” to the full on pop-soul of “Time Wounds All Heels.” And the band barnstormed the USA opening for the likes of The Cars and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers which yields the bonus EP of live tracks from Cleveland’s Agora. Nick the Knife and The Abominable Showman are the first pair of Nick Lowe catalogue reissues being released by Yep Roc in 2017. Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit along with The Rose of England will be released on August 25, with Pinker and Prouder Than Previous and Party of One following on October 20. These releases have been out of print for decades and show the period between Nick’s persona as an ironic rock ‘n’ roller and the worldly balladeer we see him as today. With tracks ranging from roots rock and reggae to the pub rock he helped popularize, these releases are absolutely worthy of a second listen.

Lo Tom is made up of David Bazan (Pedro the Lion), Trey Many (Velour 100, Starflyer 59), TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion, The Soft Drugs), and Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), friends who started playing music together when they were still pretty much kids. While many bands are a collaboration between artists with a message, a shared vision for a record, or an idea of a sound they want to create, Lo Tom is a group of friends who missed making noise together and wanted to hang out. The off-hand – almost dismissive – way they talk about the experience of making their self-titled debut masks the excellence of the music they’ve written and produced together as Lo Tom, but perhaps their casual approach to the whole endeavor is part of why it came out so great.

Another Mistake Find The Shrine Pretty Cool Lower Down
Recorded over two different sessions when they could find the time to spare, the four friends gathered with half-formed riffs and beats to see what would come out of it. The album’s thematic direction is loose and conceptual. The melodies recall Pedro the Lion and TW Walsh, the guitars sparkle with hints of Starflyer 59, and the songs hurtle through the major keystones of guitar rock – tight conversation between percussion and guitar, heavy fuzz, and some genuinely joyful breakdowns that give way to catharsis. Lyrics were mostly written by Bazan, who would take a melody and make up words quickly, then finish them over time. What makes this record special is not just how it’s built on melodies and riffs and songs with the looseness and ease of four friends who have been making music together for decades, but how vibrant and energetic and smart and funny and fun it is. For fans of a particular brand of indie-rock founded in the seventies and eighties and honed in the nineties and oughts, Lo Tom is one of the best things to arrive in a very long time.

Now, with over 200 remixes to his name – including a 2017 Grammy win for his take on Bob Moses’ “Tearing Me Up,” making him the first Portuguese artist to win a Grammy – Anjos’ is re-directing RAC to songwriting, “my first passion,” he says, with EGO, a stunning, 60minute collection of 14 songs featuring collaborations with Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Vampire Weekend’s Rostam, MNDR, St. Lucia, KNA and Joywave among others. EGO is RAC’s first artist album since 2014’s Strangers, and with its lush, nuanced indie-electronic production, it’s Andre’s most ambitious, cohesive and personal work to date. “We don’t feel comfortable calling Dear a return to our slow and heavy style,” says Tokyo’s amplifier
worshipping experimental metal institution Boris. “We’ve been heavy since day one.” And it’s true. From
the droning thunder of their Absolutego debut and through the cinematic crescendo of albums like Flood, the bombastic licks of the Heavy Rocks records, the punk rage of Vein, the bottom-dwelling psychedelia
of Akuma no Uta and Pink, and the grimy thump of Attention Please and New Album, Boris has always
attempted to search out new ways to level listeners with their sound. On the 25th year of their existence, the trio delivers Dear, an album they describe as “heavenly—far beyond heavy.”
Though Boris has traversed a broad swath
of sonic territories, they have always been
consistent in their embracing of excess, pushing their myriad of approaches and stylistic forays to points of intoxicating
absurdity. But a time came in the early
years of their third decade where the band
wondered if there were any new horizons to
explore. Consequently, it was decided that the band would begin jamming on material
for what was planned to be a record that served as a formal goodbye to fans. In a strange twist of fate, being unencumbered by expectations and having an open-
ended approach to the writing process
reinvigorated Boris. The renewed vitality yielded an album that fortifies their monolithic wall of sound while
also allowing the individual band members to explore the nuances and intricacies of minimalist riffs played at maximum volume.
Songwriting for Dear initially yielded three albums’ worth of material by the end of 2015, but as the band
was slated to spend a large chunk of 2016 on their “Performing Pink” worldwide tour, they decided to hold
off on releasing any new material. The tour further rekindled their passion, and when the band returned
home they wrote several more songs and scaled the three records down to one. “At the very first moment, this album began as some kind of potential farewell note of Boris. However, it became a sincere letter to fans and listeners… you know, like ‘Dear so-and-so, this is the new album from Boris’ or something like that. Mikael Jorgensen (of Wilco) joins art historian James Merle Thomas as QUINDAR. Hip Mobility, the duo’s first full-length LP, is built upon deep research into the audio archives of NASA’s golden era, the 1960s and 70s. These Space Age recordings—and specifically the tiny, iconic communication beeps known as Quindar Tones— form the basis for Hip Mobility’s electronic compositions. Quindar manipulates these archival recordings beyond recognition, samples and plays them as unique instruments, blends them with Jorgensen’s vintage analog synths, and sometimes simply plays them back verbatim. The result is and LP that is part historical document, part sonic pastiche, and always expansive and danceable beat-based music. he infinitely influential slide guitar attack of Elmore James was rooted in one immortal lick, a crashing, shangety-shang barrage that he first unfurled on record on his 1951 classic ‘Dust My Broom.’ It was such a devastating performance that Elmore will eternally be identified with the song and its central riff. Whenever he’d sign with a new label, he’d cut another version, continually reinforcing the connection. But great and powerful as ‘Dust My Broom’ is, it’s by no means the only reason Elmore is revered as one of the genre’s leading postwar innovators, or why he was eventually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. James was also a fine single-string picker who didn’t require a bottleneck or metal tube to deliver a torrid guitar solo. His tortured, vibrato-soaked vocal delivery was every bit as riveting as his fiery fretwork. That blistering slide technique inspired a small legion of Chicago disciples led by his cousin Homesick James, J.B. Hutto, Hound Dog Taylor, and Johnny Littlejohn. Later on, Chuck Berry, Fleetwood Mac, and Duane Allman exhibited their allegiance as Elmore’s inventions expanded into the rock realm.

He describes the record he's been creating since he started making computer music as one "conceiving an interior territory: an abstract space to process the oppression, confusion and insanity of the contemporary age; and to formulate an honest emotional and artistic response - a psychic jumping off point into an uncertain future." 'Infinity Ultra' takes inspiration from sleep paralysis, monumental artworks, children’s anime, abandoned places, ghostly rave pasts and terrifying silicon valley futures, and the limitless anger of the digital present. These influences have been channelled into an impressionistic burst of varied creativity: Shimmering VSTs; monolithic noise; euphoric blocks of colourful sound; trance stabs and the citrus rush of hardcore; towering drones, and skynet math rock – all rendered against cold, sinister space and nostalgic synth melodies. The album reveals the artist’s Scottish roots, viewed at a hazy distance from his Berlin home - a series of memories of Glasgow’s experimental psychedelic underground, its DIY rock scene and defiant club hedonism. These genre relationships are blurred and at times they contrast with audible brutality; the result is a hybrid, sculptured way of rendering music – minimal specifics, maximum emotions.

Soul Jazz Records’ new Space, Energy and Light is a collection of music by early electronic and synthesizer pioneers (from the 1960s through the 1970s), mid-1970s proto-new age gurus and 1980s guerrilla D-I-Y cassette-era electronic artists, spanning in total over a near 30-year time frame. All of these artists used electronic advancements in music technology as a means of exploring not only space and the idea of the future, but also of looking inwards to the soul and of creating music in harmony with the natural world. From computer software and hardware experimentalists and sound pioneers such as Laurie Spiegel and Kevin Braheny, as well as Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company – the first synthesizer ensemble created in collaboration with Robert Moog – through to the earliest musique concrète experimentation of Tod Dockstader, the album shows how technological advancements and creative artistic expression went hand in hand. In the mid-1970s artists Steven Halpern and Iaxos were instrumental in creating proto-new age music, experimenting in both the healing properties of sound and its relationship with the natural world. These artists also pioneered a new self-contained and underground D-I-Y approach to music, creating their own record labels, forming new distribution networks (with albums sold in meditation centres, health food stores and ashrams) far away from the commercialism of the mainstream music industry. In the early 1980s after the revolution of punk, these D-I-Y attitudes and ideas appeared once more in the growth of the distinctly anti-commercial and underground cassetteonly careers of artists such as Germany’s Stratis and Carl Matthews in Britain. This album is available as a heavyweight triple vinyl album (plus download code), CD and digital release. Artwork includes some of the earliest photography of the Plieades star cluster dating from the 1880s.

Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn collaborated on record in 2015 for their contributions to Three Lobed Recording’s Parallelogram series. That previously ornate and limited title is now released in a nonlimited format standing along and outside of that prior collection. The two artists, originally connected by mutual friends and geographic proximity, have long pushed the other’s continued artistic development. Despite sharing many live stages over the years, this collaborative album represents the first time that the two have worked together in the studio. Vile’s side sees him recast tracks by John Prine (“Way Back When”) and Randy Newman (“Pretty Boys,” featuring some truly *electric* guitar flourishes from Gunn) as if they were KV originals. The theme of reinvention continues with Vile tearing through a solo banjo rendition of his “Red Apples” (originally from his God Is Saying This To You… LP), retitled here as “Red Apples For Tom Scharpling.” Gunn takes on a late period Nico track, “60/40,” and pulls a lysergic rocker out of the track’s goth-ish roots. The bulk of Gunn’s contribution is the epically winding “Spring Garden,” a track in the vein of some of his other longform guitar excursions. Featuring signature contributions from Vile and Mary Lattimore, this hypnotizing cut is unmistakably a new classic in Gunn’s catalog.

A largely electronic record, ‘Ten Flowers’ creates an environment that is lush and vivid with warm, purring synthesizers, arpeggiated embellishments, and deep palpable bass tones. However the organic touch of humanity is still very present, integrating plenty of environmental recordings, percussion, woodwinds, tapping, clapping, and whistling that bestows the songs with a unique playfulness. The hint of nostalgia possibly detected on a title such as "I Miss My Guetto" is quickly obliterated by a sort of hunger for the future, what's to come, but also what's already bubbling feverishly. It's as if Nídia is hit from every side and everything is so exciting that she just has to incorporate all manner of sights and sounds into her productions. Tracks are kept generally short. They are strong, compact entities that announce the coming of something else - "Biotheke", for example, soundtracks a parade of Tripods if such an event could fit the narrative in "War Of The Worlds". The LP ends - whenever the listener chooses - with the locked groove ‘Indian’. ADDICTIVE TV – ORCHESTRA OF SAMPLES “Wildly disparate sources interact with one another in enthrallingly unexpected ways” The Quietus Take over 200 musicians from more than 25 different countries around the world, all recorded over a period of 5 years. Imagine that the musicians have never met each other or recorded together but converge in compositions of unique fusions, crossing cultures and styles. This is what Addictive TV (Graham Daniels and Mark Vidler aka mash-up guru Go Home Productions) have created with their Orchestra of Samples venture and their debut album, released this spring. As Addictive TV, Daniels and Vidler have been at the forefront of audio and video mashups and AV shows for nearly two decades, and whilst successfully touring the world in recent years, Orchestra of Samples became a vital part of their travels. “Orchestra of Samples is an exploration of serendipity,” explains Daniels. “Taking extra equipment to nearly every show on our Addictive TV gigs, we recorded and filmed hundreds of musicians from Brazil to Senegal, China to Kazakhstan, across Europe and even in Egypt during the Arab Spring. From these, we cut up thousands of samples to create new music, recontextualising musicians as if they were playing together. The musicians all improvised and the samples dictated the direction in the studio.” Within the recordings, Daniels and Vidler have documented some unusual and localised instruments. On ‘Eastern Baschet’, the central instrument is a Cristal Baschet which involves playing glass rods with wet fingers; ‘Hangman’ features the hang, a UFO-shaped metal drum and ‘Herbal Haze’ features re-wired childrens’ toys. The project has also attracted some

Henrik Schwarz and !K7 are proud to announce a collaboration that will bare many different musical fruits. The first of these is a brand new label called Between Buttons, curated by Henrik and focused on acoustic sounds and contemporary compositions. Between Buttons will be in partnership with !K7’s own neo-classical hub 7K!, and will kick off with a new mini LP by Schwarz entitled Works Piano, followed by an EP entitled Aphorisms by Syrian artists Khaled Kurbeh & Raman Khalaf Ensemble. Mixing up old and new technologies, experimental and more classical approaches, the label will see Schwarz forge new paths in his own work, as well as curating material from the peers he has worked with over the last 15 years. Mainly made up of acoustic sounds, piano, string quartets, self-built instruments, percussion and intriguing classicist elements with a modern twist, there will be EPs from piano virtuoso Bugge Wesseltoft, as well as other electronic producers wanting to show themselves in a different, more 'unplugged' light. “In these times of constant turbo mode, likes and thumbs-up, we need to go back to basics,” says Henrik. “We want to move away from the idea that relentless hasty productivity is a must, and instead take time to create space, to let ideas mature and to focus the mind on subtler sounds.” Works Piano will be a four track mini album that uses a Yamaha Disklavier as the starting point and reimagines it, reworks it and alters it with various digital and recording technologies. One track is a created with a reactive algorithm and one is composed purely from altered and processed piano sounds.
