Sunburned Hand of the Man might be the last of the great American free rock collectives. There was a time, not too long ago, when every region of this great republic could boast of its own visionary troupe of seekers and improvisers, thrumming at the frequency of the illuminated world. There was Pelt in the south and Jackie-O Motherfucker in the Pacific northwest, No-Neck Blues Band in New York and the iridescent Jewelled Antler out in the Bay Area. And up in the New England wilds, there was The Sunburned Hand of the Man. It was a glorious time to be a weirdo, even amidst the smoldering wreck of the George W. Bush administration. While the pale white hipsters of the early millennial New York rock scene were cutting the canon of American music to a thin rail of pre-approved bands and albums, the amorphous free rock tribes were expanding it boundlessly. It was all in there. A veritable head music awakening. Loft jazz and European free improv, Xpressway and Takoma, Jandek and Elizabeth Cotton, the Taj Mahal Travelers and the Grateful goddamn Dead. David Keenan of The Wire memorably called it the New Weird America. It felt to me like the mystical democracy of Walt Whitman. It was never arch or jittery or wiry; it sprawled like the continent and massed like the seas. It produced some of the most singularly thrilling performances that I ever had the privilege of witnessing. Most of those groups have since gone dormant—disbanded entirely or decomposed into smaller units and solo projects. But the Sunburned Hand of the Man remains. Or rather, we might say that the Sunburned Hand has returned. The sudden appearance of the phenomenal Headless in late 2019 felt like something of a resurfacing. There had, of course, been a steady trickle of obscuro cassettes and CDRs over the years, filling out an already bewilderingly immense and impossible to master discography. But Headless felt like their first proper album since the release of the Kieran Hebden-produced A on Ecstatic Peace! all the way back in 2010. It appears that it was no one-off. When Sunburned settled on Pick A Day to Die as their new album’s title, I imagine it sounded more like a cool-ass James Bond movie than a grim memento mori for a plague-stricken nation. But here we are. Assembled from recently revisited recording sessions from between 2007 and 2017, Pick A Day to Die captures the full range of Sunburned’s sonic jive. The chiming opener “Dropped a Rock” situates Jeremy Pisani’s lovely acoustic guitar within a vast ECM-like spaciousness, even as knocks and creaks of percussion and the almost-animal whine of electronics suggest some enclosing menace just beyond the frame. The tension is eventually relieved by the motorik rip of the killer title track. “Let’s feel the midnight,” vocalist Shannon Ketch commences a solemn Beefheart-esque rant about jet black leather diapers and eightpiece chicken dinners. The greasy cycle-delica of “Pick a Day to Die” is a good reminder that Sunburned always rocked harder and, if they felt like it, nastier than their compatriots in the early aughts shamanic underground. Ketch barks at you nonsensically to “Taste the campfire!” like Iggy taunting the bikers on Metallic K.O. And, indeed, after the space disco nitrous hit of “Flex,” they are back at it. The tight “Black Lights” is more rumble music. The long demented eastern-tinged odyssey “Initials” dominates the second side, laying malfunctioning computer vocals over a serpentine guitar line. The savage album closer “Prix Fixe” is an aborted hardcore number that slowly gives way to bluesy desert rock blowout. The legendary J Mascis lends his inimitable lead guitar to some “Maggot Brain”-like acid rock ascendance. The thing that one has to remember about Sunburned Hand of the Man is that while they were no less committed to vast, ritualistic summonings than their siblings in the American free rock underground, they were perhaps uniquely capable of channeling that cosmic funk. There’s a throb and a groove to Sunburned’s music that made it as much body music as head music. This is a different kind of American weirdness than that which conjures ghosts and threatens to tear down the veil between worlds. This is “free your ass” weirdness that chugs and bounces. It makes us want to get out of our heads where we’ve all been trapped these past months and drive on the freeway or bop down the street or loaf like Walt Whitman in the stoned sun. Like the man said, it makes us want to taste the campfire. Pick A Day to Die. Sure, but definitely not today.

The Daylight Between Us Rock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with The Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s Glad All Over. But while it’s been nine long years since we’ve heard from the group with whom he first made his mark, The Wallflowers are silent no more. And Dylan always knew they’d return. “The Wallflowers is much of my life’s work,” he says simply. That life’s work continues with Exit Wounds, the brand-new Wallflowers studio offering. The collection marks the first new Wallflowers material since Glad All Over. Exit Wounds, which, true to its title, is an ode to people – individual and collective – that have, to put it mildly, been through some stuff. “I think everybody – no matter what side of the aisle you’re on – wherever we’re going to next, we’re all taking a lot of exit wounds with us,” Dylan says. “Nobody is the same as they were four years ago. That, to me, is what Exit Wounds signifies. And it’s not meant to be negative at all. It just means that wherever you’re headed, even if it’s to a better place, you leave people and things behind, and you think about those people and those things and you carry them with you. Those are your exit wounds. And right now, we’re all swimming in them.”

Damon Locks – Black Monument Ensemble NOW Originally conceived as a medium for Chicago-based multi-media artist/activist Damon Locks’s sample-based sound collage work, Black Monument Ensemble (BME) has evolved from a solo mission into a vibrant collective of artists, musicians, singers, and dancers making work with common goals of joy, compassion, and intention. A genuinely multi-generational collective, ages of BME members range from 9 to 52 years old; members include instrumentalists and fellow IARC recording artists Angel Bat Dawid and Ben LaMar Gay. Their debut album Where Future Unfolds was released in 2019 by International Anthem glowing praise; landing at #3 on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of the Year,” #25 on WIRE Magazine’s “Best Albums of 2019,” and being repeatedly dubbed “The Best Album of 2019” by BBC/Worldwide radio titan Gilles Peterson. Locks & BME’s new album NOW was created in the final throes of Summer 2020, following months of pandemic-induced fear & isolation, the explosion of social unrest, struggle & violence in the streets, and as the certain presence of a new reality had fully settled in. Set up safely in the garden behind Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio, the music was recorded in only a few takes, capturing the first times members of BME had ever played or sang the tunes. The Nixon administration tanked the album, Questlove called him a genius, Prince put his music on his Paisley Park party playlist, Aloe Blacc compared him to Gil-Scott Heron and Marvin Gaye, but, as he said, “the lyrics are 10 times more potent”, Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, Gravediggaz, Busta Rhymes and De La Soul, among others, sampled tracks from this album, yet most people have never heard of this psychedelic soul jazz underground cult classic or of Eugene McDaniels himself. Now, 50 years after its release, Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse makes a timely and triumphant return in a special anniversary edition curated by Eugene’s widow, Karen McDaniels. Inside the newly-created gatefold jacket are artwork from Eugene’s private collection and unseen writings, while a 4-page insert features handwritten lyrics, the original lyric sheet, quotes from such admirers as Vernon Reid, Adrian Younge, Chicano Batman, and Alphonse Mouzon (who played on the record along with his Weather Report band-mate Miroslav Vitous) and new liner notes by Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of African and African American Studies, Duke University, Author, and host of Left of Black podcast. Neal’s essay gets to the heart of Headless Heroes: “Years after its release, Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse remains one of the most blatantly political musical tomes ever released commercially by a major label. The album contained critiques of blue-eyed soul (“Jagger the Dagger”), examined the phenomenon of “shopping while black” (“Supermarket Blues”)—years before “racial profiling” entered into the national lexicon— and the futility of race hatred (“Headless Heroes”). “The Parasite” was McDaniels’ most stinging critique though, as he gets at the root of American Imperialism and its relationship to the genocide of America’s native populations.” Real Gone Music’s deluxe, 50th anniversary release of Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse is limited to 1750 copies pressed in purple vinyl, and cut from the original LP master. GOD BLESS TINY TIM (Limited Yellow Tulip Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JULY 9, 2021 If you think, based on “Tiptoe Thru’ the Tulips with Me” and his nationally televised marriage to Miss Vicki on The Tonight Show, that Tiny Tim was a mere novelty act, think again. Behind that ukulele, pasty white make-up, falsetto, and prominent proboscis was a serious scholar of American music, perhaps the only performer of the ‘60s (and certainly the only performer of his age group) keeping the torch alive for songs from vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley. Tim (born Herbert Buckingham Khaury) also was blessed with a stupendous vocal range, from baritone to his trademark falsetto, and was adept on not just ukulele but guitar, mandolin, and violin. Even with all that talent, though, had Tiny Tim just made a straight ‘20s trad jazz/pop/folk album for his debut record, God Bless Tiny Tim would not be the stone-cold cult classic it is today. But the album married Tim’s innate eccentricity with stupendously lush production from Richard Perry, who was fresh from working on Captain Beefheart’s debut, Safe as Milk, and would go on to produce everybody from Diana Ross to Rod Stewart. With Perry’s production, and Artie Butler’s arrangements, God Bless Tiny Tim featured an incredible assortment of instruments, from didgeridoo to koto to celeste to tympani, with nary a ukulele to be found on many of the tracks. Furthermore, the album was sprinkled with some of the psychedelic fairy dust that was in the air at the time (1968), full of non sequiturs both verbal and musical (like the cover of Sonny Bono’s “I Got You Babe”). The result: an album that stands outside of time, defying categorization or description. Now, Real Gone Music is releasing God Bless Tiny Tim on LP in an oh-so-appropriate yellow “tulip” vinyl edition limited to 700 copies. This record belongs in any serious—or not-so-serious!—record collection.

The Endless Summer (“Ultraviolet” Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JULY 9, 2021 You never know when the magic is going to happen. Witness the saga of The Sandals’ 1966 album The Endless Summer. The San Clemente, CA-based surf group The Sandells had released their album Scrambler! on the World Pacific label in 1964 to little notice when they met up with surf documentary maker Bruce Brown. Brown had already made five surf-oriented movies, also largely ignored, but had hit upon an intriguing idea for his next one: tracking two surfers across the world as they followed the Summer sun from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere and back in search of the perfect wave. Brown was just beginning to edit his footage when The Sandells played him tunes from Scrambler!, hoping to sell him a song for the film. Brown was so smitten by the music that he used a number of tunes from Scrambler!, including the classic “Theme from Endless Summer,” which, even though it was recorded two years earlier, became the film’s musical calling card. The blend of the easygoing surf instrumentals with Brown’s spectacular footage proved to be pure gold: the movie The Endless Summer ran in New York for a full year and was instrumental (no pun intended) in spreading surf culture worldwide. As for The Sandells, they changed their name to The Sandals, and re-released Scrambler! as The Endless Summer in 1966, ensuring that the album took its rightful place as one of the greatest surf instrumental records of all time. Foodman is Takahide Higuchi, from Nagoya, in central Japan. After remixing Jessy Lanza’s ‘Alexander’ last year, ‘Yasuragi Land’ is his first release for Hyperdub, alive with Footwork-inspired musical freedom and the sense that everything is a rhythm. Unusually, ‘Yasuragi Land’ has no bass. Instead, the album is breezy and refined; hyper-rhythmic music, made with a few simple tools, dances around your head. ‘Yasuragi’ and ‘Parking Area’ feel like gently deconstructed acoustic jazz, while ‘Ari Ari’ is deep house splattered with a cartoonish hiccup. ‘Hoshikzu Tenboudai’ and ‘Shiboritate’ bounce around the speakers like tranceinducing polyrhythmic updates of the New York minimalists, programmed past human limits. ‘Food Court’ is busy with mechanical rhythm and naive melodies, ‘Gallery Café’ pairs a cute wooden flute melody with micro edited wooden drums, ‘Michi No Eki’ is like a digital take on Magma's complex rock, and ‘Sanbashi’ indirectly approximates 80s R&B. The album ends on ‘Misyuku’, with a treated guitar lick sounding like it was stolen from Daft Punk, woven into dense interlacing drums.

American Dreams Records CLAIRE ROUSAY A COLLECTION
We’ve been jokingly referring to A Collection as Claire Rousay’s “Greatest Hits.” Over the last four or five years, Rousay’s made a lot of music - frankly, it can be hard to know where to start. A Collection is our attempt to showcase her music prior to a softer focus - an origin primer, beginning with her recordings as a solo drummer and the ensuing transition into musique concrete/new music composer. A Collection clocks in at about two hours and fifteen minutes and boasts thirteen songs, split over two CDs. Rousay selected her favorite drumming cuts to fill the first CD and did the same with musique concrete/
new music for the second. On disc one, scattershot, frenetic percussion compositions like “All,” “Tusk,” and “Good Set” share space with more constant drumming pieces like “Virulence.” Disc two often maintains the use of percussion, but even at the outset on “Things I Doubt You’d Care About,” we hear Rousay’s vocals - sometimes spoken, sometimes whispered. We begin to find light melodic content, a shrill drone frequency, her now-staple field recordings, and voice-totext like on “I’m Not A Bad Person.” Want to find where Claire Rousay begins? Xardinal Coffee is a debut album that is a strikingly contemporary record of slick hip hop, rich textures, idiosyncratic grooves and electronictinged wonky R&B. It’s an album that feels intricate and busy but also manages to retain a sense of space and looseness, allowing hypnotic rhythms to unfurl with grace. EXUM, aka Antone Chavez Exum Jr. credits the 'genius' of his two producers, Erik Samkopf and Dex Barstad, who he works closely with. Samkopf being the producer responsible for Xardinal Coffee respectively. 'Sam and I don’t really like doing anything that doesn’t have an ückean effect. We’re not from here you know, we’re just getting adjusted’, says EXUM of the album’s eclectic sonic palate. 'We love to push the envelope on what is considered quirky, but try not to think about it too much. If me and another are walking down a street, whose going to be first to try something spectacular? Them. My walk will speak.’ However, any sense of weirdness is also married with an infectious and accessible quality. Tracks such as Arrest the Dancer - 'a David Bowie/Lady Gaga-type beat we got from YouTube by a producer named Raixsa' - comes alive with an irresistible funk strut, almost recalling Prince in the swaggering bounce of it. On top of this, EXUM’s vocals offer versatility and flexibility, moving from caramel smooth croons to tight rap flows and to enthusiastic bursts of singing. A sense of texture is palpable throughout too. Portabella Mushroom was recorded on a rare magic mushrooms trip and retains a lysergic and psychedelic quality, sucking the listener up into its swirling atmospheres. Whereas the sparse, minimal and slightly eerie beats of Wolves Eat Wolves was recorded in pitch black and the song takes on that kind of crepuscular vibe, which interspersed with the song’s dark lyrical content touching upon sex trafficking - further cements this. ‘I take no form’, the artist says, and his formless nature speaks to his willingness to constantly recreate himself as an artist. A love of words is also clear in EXUM’s delivery, with them being carefully placed and sequenced amidst the ambitious soundscapes of the record. 'Writing is precious to me', he says. 'The vulnerability to bleed on paper. While playing with words, styling the same outfit for the 7th day in a row.' Initially EXUM looked up producer Erik Samkopf to work with when he’d had a temporary falling out with his previous producer Barstad. In love with Samkopf’s work with Pen Gutt, EXUM took a punt and flew from his hometown of Richmond, Virginia to Oslo, Norway to work with him. As EXUM and Barstad patched things up, EXUM and Samkopf were building chemistry, creating something truly unique. 'Dex and Sam never cease to amaze me', he says. 'They’re versed and creative beyond measure, they both have an immense amount of musicality, and most of all, their love for music is sweaty.’ However adding to the legend, EXUM took a little detour on his musical journey, spending years as a professional footballer in the NFL, for teams such as the San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings. Now leaving that chapter of his life behind, EXUM has returned to the true love held dear to him ever since he can remember: music. EXUM is not simply trying his hand at music though; he is crafting every part of his artistic journey, from carefully selected contributors (such as string composer Christian Balvig) and overseas producers, to shaping his own brilliant music videos with directors such as Allison Bunce and Rosabel Ferber. Both of whom occupy creative space in his art world, which goes by the name of ücke. He has effectively created his own musical ecosystem. 'You’ve got to create your own world and live highly in that first', he says. 'Making it inevitable for other worlds to not be touched by what’s vibrating through you. In my world I’m already a massively iconic artist.'

Produced by Grammy-nominated veteran Matt Pierson, she's joined by jazz guitar virtuoso Pasquale Grasso and his trio (Ari Roland and Kenny Washington) for a release that furthers Joy's reputation as one of America's most promising young jazz vocalists. Two were the English bands the Slits and the Raincoats, and the third band, from Switzerland, was LiLiPUT. Fans of all three bands will argue ad infinitum as to who was the better. But one thing is for certain: LiLiPUT was an amazing band that recorded amazing music, and comparing what they accomplished to that of another band is a useless intellectual exercise. Besides, it detracts from valuable listening time. They began with the name Kleenex until the threat of a lawsuit by corporate giant Kimberly-Clark (who had copyrighted the name Kleenex) forced them to become LiLiPUT in 1980. What's collected here certainly belongs in the same realm as the other great, pioneering, female-dominated bands of the time. Liliput were one of the finest in their field, male or female. From their punkier singles as Kleenex to their more avant-garde developments as Liliput, this compilation offers over two solid hours of great music that hasn't depreciated at all. In light of all the bands they've inspired, this stuff probably sounds even better than it did when it was first issued.

The album runs thick with sonic tributes and remembrances. “Chitoʼs Song” is a contemplative, ethereal tribute to a beloved uncle. “Curandera” conjures the memor y of the irrepressible healing power of medicine women. “Black Pearl” recalls his great grandfather, heir to a legacy of indigenous peoples enslaved as pearl divers in the Sea of Cortez. •
Leading a nine-piece ensemble composed of New Yorkʼs top percussionists and members of Daptoneʼs rhythm section, Cochemea recombined ancient elements of drums, winds, and voice, creating his own world of emotional textures and rhythmic possibilities. It is 2021. We have almost come to accept life with them. There is fear, and loathing, but we concede that they are among our number. The almost look like us. They live somewhat like we do. But what world are they from? But there’s something more. Where once was Superwolf, now roam Superwolves, the demon spawn of Matt Sweeney and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. It’s been years, and we’ve heard from them only occasionally. They’ve come to us upon a lonely road, through a strange country, a world that looks like ours, where the sun shines as we’ve known it to do, and there appears to be wind and rain, water, animals and people — but in this place, there is no resistance to the demands of nature. No hubristic attempts to bend the recourse of natural resource. No

corruption in killing. Reason gathers behind all initiatives. So their music, then, is similarly aligned with the traditional sounds that come from all beings. A music expression knowing no borders other than rivers, mountain ranges, coastlines — the natural delineations of tribal areas, boundaries meant to be overcome with fascination and explored with daring by our challenged race. The songs, then, go boldly into undreamed-of places, and go deep, as Matt and Bonny take all the musics they know to make songs that penetrate. In classic Garcia-Hunter style, Sweeney and the ‘Prince’ first work separately, finding a path to each other in their solitary imaginings. Bonnie lyric sets delivered to Matt spark Sweeney’s guitar brain; chords and a melody are shaped, recorded fast and loose and sent back to the Prince, then the two parties meet up to sing, stitch, strengthen and finally perform them together in front of a small unsuspecting audience. Then new sets of lyrics are sent, animated and played in

This is just the beginning of their fusion process, as words imply vocalizations to counter and support, and guitar lines suggest harmonic fields to subtly push into. Ann Delrene leads this trio down avenues of jazz, rockabilly, & folk, all from the comforts of a Missouri resort! A record that sounds as good as it looks, there’s no wonder folks have traded four figures for a copy! This private press treasure gets its first ever reissue! “Here's one right here that goes way back for me. In fact this is one of the life-changers for me. Just looking at it and, ‘woah, what's she sound like?’ and those guys... the song ‘Voodoo Doll,’ in particular, when I heard it, that was what put it all together for me. At that time, I was still heavily into garage music. It had the garage thing. I was really into space music and sort of, science fiction-y aspects and the guitar is sort of freeform reverb noise and I was really into sexy female vocalists and having those three, and having a groove sort of beat going…’Funnel Of Love’ also appeals to the twilight zone sort of strange aspect, which was early on a heavy thing for me – getting that twilight zone feeling when I hear a record, like I got with Peter Grudzien. Where I feel like what I imagine drugs would have done for me if it’d worked, when I was a little kid wanting to run away to San Francisco or something. Something that just seems like it's from another dimension. When I hear it. it just puts me into this almost... is my hair going to prickle up? Am I making some sort of secret mysterious contact with some lost little scene that's going on? What was that scene like? Who were the people around it? You know, what were their friends like? What did they do? Or like, was it a David Lynch type weirdness or what? So, I had that sort of thing going on. DJ FOOD KALEIDOSCOPE + COMPANION BACK IN PRINT + UNRELEASED 2LP Released in April 2000, Kaleidoscope marked a new era for the DJ Food alias first conceived by label founders Coldcut. Now under the expert control of fellow Ninjas Kevin Foakes, aka Strictly Kev, and Patrick Carpenter, aka PC, the album broke with the past by reflecting a possible future of beats and pieces. Twenty years later, amid the first national lockdown in England, Kev and PC decided to celebrate Kaleidoscope's 20th anniversary by digging through their personal archives for material from the original recording sessions. They found more than they bargained for, compiling versions, alternate mixes, and unreleased ideas into a series of mixes that have now been further refined into the Kaleidoscope Companion and presented alongside the original album on quadruple vinyl. DJ Food cemented Ninja Tune’s foundations with a series of five ‘Jazz Brakes’ albums in the first half of the 90’s. So called because they were making ‘Food for DJs’, the albums started as tools to scratch and mix with but progressively became more complex with each volume due to the addition of Patrick Carpenter aka PC. Joined by Kevin Foakes aka Strictly Kev, for the sixth album, 1995’s ‘A Recipe For Disaster’, the latter duo paired up to become ‘the face’ of DJ Food. With ‘Kaleidoscope’ turning 20 on April 3rd 2020 and a national lockdown meaning they had time on their hands, PC and Kev unearthed hours of unreleased material made 20 years previously. As Kev puts it, "It’s not a new DJ Food album, it’s an old one that never was. TSTD returns with another trip into the musical past of the sundrenched Westcoast: This time DJ Supermarkt unearthed 16 Soul & Funk versions of original Westcoast/AOR/Yachtpop gems. You can find tracks originally performed by Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, Wings covered by big Soul & Funk legends like Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones, Brothers Johnson and more. Most of the tracks have been recorded in the late 70s/early 80s, but failed to become big hits and fell under the radar. Like Chaka Khan doing a seriously funky version of Fleetwood Mac’s „Everywhere“ (from an unreleased album recording), next to obscure reworks like Leslie Smith’s version of „Nothin’ You Can Do About It“ by the overlooked Airplay (Jay Graydon and David Foster). Responding to a comment that the foreground of his Western photographs feels like a stage set, the photographer and auteur Wim Wenders suggests, “that impression is basic to the American West. Everything people have built there has a highly theatrical air.” This animates Places of Consequence, the second album and first solo LP from Cameron Knowler, which deploys guitar and banjo as cinematic tools to soundtrack and investigate the region. “Despite the fact that the lightheartedness of youth lifts and the problematic components of the West reveal themselves over time,” Knowler says, “there are still ways of harnessing the space to richly creative ends.” A lifelong Westerner and recent Los Angeles transplant, Knowler spent his childhood in Yuma, Arizona and Houston, Texas, where much of his learning was selfdirected: riding dirt bikes in the desert, writing poetry, or visiting antique stores with his mother, who sold vintage glass beads. At seventeen, a bluegrass concert changed his life, and he began practicing guitar for twelve to sixteen hours a day, developing the quiet focus that permeates
his music. As an instrumentalist largely eschewing fingerstyle technique, Knowler’s music presents as understated, but has much in common with the music of his peers. Like those of frequent collaborator Eli Winter, Knowler’s performances are affecting, his melodies intuitive and learned; like Yasmin Williams, his arrangements are lush and deceptively simple, informed by his jazz guitar studies at the University of Houston. Album opener “I’m an Old Cowhand,” an old song about an inept cowboy who drives a Ford V8, is dense and striking, recalling Sonny Rollins’ seminal rendition or the Haitian dances of Frantz Casseus. Knotty, waggish electric miniatures like “Supertone Biome” or “Atelier de Stein” recall Terry Allen and Ry Cooder’s Paris, Texas soundtrack. “Puerto Suelo,” which features acoustic and electric guitars playing in unison and a small orchestra of kitchen utensils, exemplifies Knowler’s knack for gorgeous, understated melodies and studio experimentation, nodding to LA session wizards like Blake Mills or Sam Gendel. the criminally unregarded Robert Bowlin. Knowler’s desert upbringing informs his willingness to use silence as a compositional tool. This becomes clear on the rich, moving “Second Train to Alamogordo,” whose notes commune with silence. It’s perhaps most evident on “Kuyina,” derived from Congolese accordionist Camille Feruzi and late, legendary fiddler Jon Bekoff, who passed moments after playing the song in his backyard. In Knowler’s arrangement—a tribute to his late mother— one senses the depth of his consideration, where something as small as a bent note nearly tears a hole in the song. Katy Riddell’s album art suggests the inherent challenges of the album’s goal. “Her illustrative style,” Knowler says, “calls to mind a certain academic reserve, which I myself feel having grieved the place of my upbringing through my academically trained craft. Whereas I was once wishing to get out, I am now wishing to reenter in some ways. Both are futile pursuits.” Places of Consequence is testament to making the effort, and a document of Knowler’s clear talent.

Natalie Chami and Whitney Johnson perform as a duo under the name Damiana. Both artists have built their own catalogs as multiinstrumentalist improvisers and composers in the Chicago experimental music scene, exploring the intersections between ambient, electroacoustic improv, and more legible songcraft based around their voices and their work with synths and electronics -- all �ltered through their backgrounds in classical performance and education. Chami’s solo recordings under the TALsounds moniker have appeared on labels such as NNA Tapes, Ba Da Bing!, and Moog’s own imprint, and her collaborative projects include the trio Good Willsmith with Hausu Mountain co-founders Max Allison and Doug Kaplan. Johnson has released a series of solo LPs as Matchess on the label Trouble in Mind, and performs with Laura Callier (Gel Set) as the duo Simulation — along with contributions to recordings and live performances by Ryley Walker, Circuit Des Yeux, Bitchin Bajas, and Tortoise’s 20th anniversary performances of TNT, among other artists. After meeting in the early 2010s, Chami and Johnson embarked on multiple US tours together, and their informal duo collaborations naturally crystallized over time into the Damiana project. The duo’s debut album Vines presents their �rst recordings after years of live sets and home recording sessions. The album strikes a balance between the realms of deliberate compositional sculpting and freeform improvisation, as Damiana’s evolving sessions of looping synth phrases and harmonized vocal lines emphasize austere beauty and meditation as much as spectral disorientation and instrumental complexity. Chami and Johnson approach the music of Damiana as a distinctly femme endeavor. In talking about the project, Johnson argues that a soft-femme aesthetic is often stigmatized or ignored in the noise/ experimental world compared to the dominant hard-masc voices, or lumped into its own category closer to popular vocal music despite its adventurous, complex, and troubling elements. Chami identi�es a back and forth shift in the duo’s music between the forces of support / nurturing vs. disintegration / depletion — a dichotomy that mirrors the reality of the lived femme experience. Damiana presents a view of femininity that’s just as much grounded in its beautiful and delicate aspects as its challenging or even frightening turns. Chami and Johnson sonify beyond binary expectations of gender, and seek to transcend other imaginary limitations on what the world can become.

PATRICE RUSHEN - STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART Strut present the definitive edition of Patrice Rushen’s landmark album from 1982, ‘Straight From The Heart’. Recorded during Elektra’s drive for ‘sophisticated dance music’ as many jazz artists created their own arrangements of disco and boogie, the sessions marked a progression for Patrice as she began exploring sonics as much as songwriting. “I was looking at different ways to experiment with the sounds on my records. Synths widened the palette available to us.” Singles from the album included ‘Breakout!’, ‘Number One’ and the global hit ‘Forget Me Nots’. “Bassist Freddie Washington played the bassline during a jam at my family’s house. I caught it, we kept messing around with the groove, then I developed the lyrics and chorus. It was just about recognising that moment when it came up.” “When I delivered the album to the label, the A&R said, ‘we don’t like anything on here.’ I realised quickly that they would give us no support so producer Charles Mims, myself and Freddie decided to engage a promotion company ourselves to start working the single. Although it took a while to pick up support, it paid off.” The single hit no. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1982 and the album became Patrice’s best seller globally from her time with Elektra / Asylum, securing a Grammy nomination. In more recent years, the album has become a regular source for samples in the world of hip hop and R&B. Most famously, Will Smith’s theme for the film ‘Men In Black’ and George Michael’s ‘Fastlove’ were both based, to varying degrees, on ‘Forget Me Nots’. Strut’s new reissue of ‘Straight From The Heart’ is released on 9th April 2021. LP and CD are presented in their full original artwork and feature bonus 12” versions of the album’s singles including a previously unreleased extended mix of ‘Tired Of Being Alone’. Package includes rare photos by Bobby Holland and a new interview with Patrice Rushen. All tracks remastered from the original tapes by Technology Works.
