It’s hard to overstate the importance of Fanny’s 1970 debut album. For the first time, a group of women (sisters June and Jean Millington, Alice De Buhr and Nickey Barclay) wrote and sang their own songs, played their own instruments and, perhaps most importantly, rocked just as hard as any male band out there. And, as the first all female band signed to a major label (Reprise) and with superstar producer Richard Perry at the board, these four women became perhaps L.A.’s biggest “buzz band,” landing repeated bookings at the Whisky-a-Go-Go with a who’s who of rock’s glitterati in attendance. But, without a reference point with which to review them, the rock press was less than kind, often dismissing them as a novelty act. Fanny would have to become that reference point, and so they did for the generations of female rockers to come after them, from Joan Jett to Girlschool to Courtney Love and beyond. They were truly the Godmothers of Chick Rock. By the time McDaniels recorded his 1970 album Outlaw, he had re-christened himself “the left rev mc d” and penned the soul-jazz protest anthem “Compared to What,” first recorded in 1966 by Les McCann and turned into a standard by McCann and saxophonist Eddie Harris on their 1969 album Swiss Movement. Indeed, the front cover of Outlaw left no doubt as to the radicalization of McDaniels’ politics. As Pat Thomas puts it in the liner notes that we have added to this reissue, “One sees Middle America’s worst nightmare coming to life. There’s the badass Reverend Lee himself holding a bible. Righteous Susan Jane in a jean jacket and black French resistance turtleneck is wielding a machine gun, and McDaniels’ then-wife Ramona appears as a soul sister with cross your heart Viva Zapata! ammo belts. In the forefront is a large human skull, just in case you didn’t already get the message.” The Nixon White House sure got the message; legend has it that the administration was so offended by the lyrics to “Silent Majority” (“Silent Majority is calling out loud to you and me from Arlington Cemetery”) that either Spiro Agnew or Nixon’s Chief of Staff personally called Atlantic, asking them to stop working with McDaniels. Politics aside, Outlaw offers a heady blend of soul, jazz, folk, and rock grooves played by Ron Carter, Eric Weissberg, and Hugh McCracken among others, with legendary producer Joel Dorn at the controls and cult favorite William S. Fischer operating as Musical Director. Oft-sampled, and never more relevant, Real Gone’s 50th anniversary release of Outlaw comes in a neon red vinyl pressing limited to 700 copies. And those liner notes we mentioned previously? They come with some pithy McDaniels quotes that confirm his revolutionary fervor remained unquenched till his death in 2011.

South Somewhere Else // June 26, 2020 On the Elephant 6-affiliated band’s 4th studio album,Theo Hilton (Defiance, Ohio) shines a light on experiences of queer white male socialization in the southern college town of Athens, GA. Activism and allyship continue to be front-and-center themes for Hilton. Robbie Cucchiaro (Music Tapes) adds trumpet and euphonium lines that echo both the golden era of Elephant 6 recordings and the brass bands of Theo’s current home, New Orleans. Jared Gandy (Witches), on bass and guitar, notches another year in a two-decade collaboration with Theo. Matte Cathcart (Nihilist Cheerleader, Door-Keys) rounds out the quartet on drums. Everyone, except Theo, lives in Athens. Recorded and co-produced by Kris Hilbert over an intensive week at Legitimate Business Studio in Greensboro, North Carolina, South Somewhere Else sees the group settling into their close relationships with collaborators across the south. Since releasing Ursa Minor in 2017, the band composed a single “Old Number Seven” for NPR’s More Perfect podcast, currently featured in the New York Historical Society’s exhibit Colonists, Citizens, and Constitutions. For over fifty years, Erickson remained one of music’s true enigmas, battling years of mental illness and poverty, while making some of the most electrifying and transcendent sounds ever recorded. His songs tell the real-life tale of a man who went from being the 19-year-old heart-throb lead singer of one of the world’s first psychedelic groups to being incarcerated in a high security psychiatric institution. The Elevators have been called the originators of psychedelic music. They were certainly the first to apply the word to disorientating, acid-warped rock, influencing the likes of Janis Joplin (who almost joined) and the Grateful Dead, and later covered by REM, Primal Scream, the Jesus and Mary Chain and even ZZ Top. You might recognize the Elevators’ incendiary first single, “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” from the opening scene of High Fidelity. This collection brings together tracks from the Elevators 1966 performances in San Francisco and Houston, plus bonus tracks from Roky’s solo performances in the early ’70s.

Her singular conception of pop music — the idiosyncratic songs, singing and playing that have graced seven acclaimed releases — is in verdant recurrence on Glen Echo, blossoming anew, cutting sharply in the spirit and image of her ever-evolving, always questioning style. its to her endeavors. That doesn’t mean she’s gonna heed them so much as add ‘em to the considerations of her art. Writing and arranging on keyboards since the time of her solo debut, AZITA focused on guitars for this set of songs. Not simply for swagger or a fresh approach to soloing, but as part of a way to elide expected singer-songwriter tropes, to democratically populate the sound-stage in equal partnership instead. This is a key aspect of the Glen Echo sound, one that determined another new choice — AZITA playing everything on the album herself! That’s the best kind of democracy. Previous long-players Enantiodromia, Life On the Fly and How Will You? were achieved via close work with players and engineers who took the compositions from the demo to a finished form. Invariably though, something would get lost in the transmigration somewhere. With Glen Echo, AZITA comes through fully, jaggedly, most vividly, owning her intention entirely in the dialogue of singing and playing her rock and rhythm and blues. The lyric sheet is riddled with language that circles, through the many moments of life, aspects of the passage of time, the preempted
dreams and strangeness of the present and the way we invent an idealized past in response to the changes, guiding the narrative... where? It’s all banded together by AZITA AZITA’s wit, equal parts droll and dire, her dispassionate view of fates and outcomes for all of us here together on the planet, textured with unique, cinematic details and sudden dives into a deeply felt, utterly OG sense of soul. In Glen Echo are a multitude of sounds — all the moments in a life: the good time grooves, acerbic exchanges in the street, shifts in community and generosity, moments of loss you know you will carry forever, reflection upon unknown futures and pasts, the dark recesses late at night that echo with a wonder you’ve never felt before. When The Orange Peels first came on the scene in 1997, it was probably the worst time to release an optimistic album of bright, earnest pop songs. But the band and their debut album “SQUARE” (Minty Fresh) came through like a cool Pacific Ocean breeze to a musical landscape littered with self-loathing and a dodgy sense of irony. It was the 90s, afterall. The band has gone on to release 7 albums—three of them in the last decade—but fans rallied around the idea of hearing SQUARE on vinyl for the first time. Apollo / R&S are delighted to welcome back The Primitive Painter, aka the duo of Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke for a timely reissue of their 1994 lost classic self-titled album of sonorous IDM. Growing up in Frankfurt, in the 80s and 90s the duo met at an indie rock club in their home town of Darmstadt, bonding over their shared obsession with the first wave of acid, Chicago house and early Detroit techno as well as their patronage of now iconic Frankfurt club nights like The Omen or Dorian Gray or the infamous Delirium Record shop run by scene stalwarts Ata (Robert Johnson) and Heiko MSO (Playhouse). Taking inspiration from the likes of The Black Dog and Transmat as well as seminal compilations such as Planet E’s Intergalactic Beats and Warp’s Artificial intelligence compilation the duo honed their inventive take on the Detroit techno blueprint under the monicker Acid Jesus, debuting on their freshly minted Klang Elektronik label. The label was started in conjunction with Ata and Heiko after Fluegel & Wuttke (regular patrons of the Delirium store) pressed a demo on them, muttering the immortal line; “Please listen to the tape, we are big Mr. Fingers fans.”

Through the mid ’90s the project flourished giving rise to a classic album and a brace of singles that number amongst the best of the era’s techno, winning them a influential fans most notably Sven Väth, David Holmes and Andrew Weatherall who invited them to play live at one of the legendary Sabresonic parties in London. Alongside the success of the Acid Jesus project, the duo found great inspiration in outside of the club, including an ambient happening when the KLF came to play Frankfurt; “There were live sheep eating grass on stage while they played at Mark Spoon’s club XS”, as well as cinematic influence from the likes of Jim Jarmush and Wim Wenders. It was however the euphonic IDM grandeur of Apollo Recordings self titled compilation of 1993 that really got their creative juices flowing: “It was a ten track compilation with artists like David Morley, Model 500, Aphex Twin which still sounds so good today,” Jörn enthuses. “ It was really the trigger to go away from the Detroit sound and more towards the big melodies of B12 etc.” Deciding to make their tribute to this style of music the duo turned out 10 tracks of gauzy, melodious electronica in a white hot fever, one after another over the ensuing months. Settling on a name for the new project they picked ‘The Primitive Painters’ taking inspiration from the band Felt. “We are both children of the C86 movement,” explains Jörn. “this attitude of noisy art school influenced rock like Primal Scream, MBV, The Jesus & Mary Chain really inspired us to take a DIY approach to our music.” They sent the resulting demo cassette to Renaat at R&S / Apollo. “We really had no expectations,” Jörn explains. “So we were shocked and delighted when we received a fax saying that he wanted to release it”. The resulting release was bungled by an R&S mix up that attributed the album to the duo’s own Klang Elektronik label which confused both fans and distributors alike, denying the release the critical boost and attention that it so richly deserved. Accordingly the release slipped out without much fanfare, with a chastened Fluegel & Wuttke returning to their Acid Jesus activities which would eventually lead to their blockbusting success as Alter Ego. Over the ensuing years the reputation of The Primitive Painter album has only grown, with second hand copies (only 500 vinyl were pressed) changing hands for exorbitant amounts on Discogs, leading us to this opportune moment of a richly deserved ‘first’ release on the label for which the project was started, Apollo / R&S. “This really brings us full circle,” says Jörn. “Apollo / R&S meant and means so much to us as artists and so it was bittersweet to not have the official release - to put that right all these years later feels really good.” This new vinyl release comes in re-created original gatefold artwork and includes all original 10 tracks (Stoned Soul Picnic was previously on the CD only). It also contains an exclusive previously unheard track ‘Testing’ on the digital release.

KLÔ PELGAG is a renowned singer-songwriter who shares her quirky, authentic world with the public. After putting out an independent EP, she released her debut LP, L’alchimie des monstres in 2013 and won several awards, including Best New Artist at the Gala de l’ADISQ in 2014, the Prix Barbara of the French Culture Minister, the Grand Prix de la Francophonie of l’Académie Charles Cros, the Prix Miroir Célébration de la langue française at Festival d’été de Québec, as well as the Prix Rapsat-Lelièvre. She toured several francophone countries to present the songs of that album, giving more than 200 concerts in Quebec, Belgium, France and Switzerland. Her sophomore effort, 2016’s L’étoile thoracique was a massive success in Quebec. She won four Félix awards at the Gala de l’ADISQ in 2017: Alternative Album of the Year, Album of the Year – Critics’ Choice, Singer-Songwriter of the Year, and Record Producer of the Year. The album made the long list of the Polaris Music Prize in 2017, and was nominated at the JUNO Awards the following year. Additionally, she won the prestigious Prix Félix-Leclerc, as well as the Prix de la chanson SOCAN for her song “Ferrofluides-fleurs”. She also presented her first concert in Japan. In 2018, she was crowned Female Artist of the Year at the Gala de l’ADISQ. Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is her third album that will come out April 17 2020 via Secret City Records.

Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is a place that exists geographically, but it’s also a place that exists in my mind. When I was a child, we’d pass by the sign announcing the village while travelling from SainteAnne-des-Monts to Rivière-Ouelle in Quebec. Every time I saw it, I averted my eyes and shivered in horror. That name terrified me. I imagined a dying village with sad houses, empty streets and creaky chairs still rocking with the memory of deserters.

And now, after many years of overwork, I found myself exactly in that place. In the middle of all my anxieties, not knowing anymore who I was, taking hits and hating myself more than anyone else. A thick fog settled in my head, with black, opaque skies. I now lived on this island that I built or imagined on my own. Then in August 2019, while I was starting to get my bearings back, I decided to visit Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, the village. The initial thing I discovered was quite meaningful: it’s actually an island. I took the ferry and arrived in an idyllic place. A village with dirt roads and no more than 35 inhabitants, whose souls haven’t been perverted or spoiled by mankind. A village with no grocery store or gas station. A superb place. With trees and flowers, a lighthouse, colourful wooden houses, and fish whose flesh was so pure it went beyond my definition of the colour “pink.” Slowly, I went through the village I imagined as a child, and I hope to never go back there. Now, I’ll go to the real Notre-Dame-desSept-Douleurs, where I’ll eat fish that smells like the river and whose colour bemuses me.

Overview:
Otherworldly beat science from the currently vibrant Washington DC underground. The heavily processed MCing of NappyNappa weaves in and out of the skewed electronics and stuttering percussion of Patrick Cain. Loosely affiliated with the Future Times crew and featuring contributions from Dolo Percussion (aka Max D). In the duo’s own words “a collaborative experiment in liberated sound, vision, and performance“, Model Home orbit in their own universe, with glimmers of light from distant galaxies refracted in their sound. Some moments are reminiscent of DJ Screw, MF Doom or a mangled dub sound system cassette that’s been left in the sun for too long, the grainy collage backing tracks closer to the sick midwest drones of Aaron Dilloway than any modern beatmakers, but this is implicitly its own thing. The spirit of free improvisation pervades the tracks, a sound evolving from two artistic sensibilities bouncing off each other without a set plan and creating a third pathway to unknown worlds. One Year compiles tracks from 8 different self-released mixtapes made during an intense initial 12 month period of musical activity that birthed the project. Approached with the same archival sensibility that Disciples has brought to albums-that-never-were from Black Lodge, Bogdan Raczynski and His Name Is Alive, but with the idea of creating a framework to present an underground NOW sound. A Jamaican style ‘showcase’ album for these outliers from the District of Columbia. Although without sonic precedent it somehow makes a kind of perverse sense that these sounds have emerged from the same place that birthed Dischord Records and Trouble Funk. Model Home reached the attention of Disciples via the writer Mike McGonigal, the force behind essential music periodicals Chemical Imbalance, Yeti, the newly launched Maggot Brain, and sleevenote writer for our series of unearthed His Name Is Alive teenage home recordings. He opined that had cult UK label On-U Sound started today, this is the kind of stuff they would be releasing, which immediately had our interest well and truly piqued, and indeed perhaps a 21st-century interpretation of the still unique and indefinable hybrid sounds of New Age Steppers or Mark Stewart & The Maffia makes some kind of sense when trying to swim in the slipstream of Nappa’s cosmic logic and beautifully abstracted flow, the spliced-and-diced loops of Cain adding hook-laden carpets of texture, just check the quasi-gamelan bed of “Cheek To The Matrix” or the Patrick Conway synth soundtrack through a fuzz pedal thrust of “Livin’ In A Treehouse”. McGonigal also says: “It's dubby and weird, electronics and voice -- experimental rap of interest to fans of Sleaford Mods, Roll Deep Crew, the Fall, 'Metal Box,' etc.” Product Description:

Angel Bat Dawid Transition East Transition East features two new pieces of music created by Angel Bat Dawid in response to Emma Warren's 2019 book Make Some Space – i.e. the book that chronicles the history of London DIY music institution Total Refreshment Centre. Angel Bat Dawid, who first met Emma Warren at Total Refreshment Centre in 2017, composed & recorded "Transition East" alone in her space on the Southside of Chicago, originally to be an accompaniment for the audiobook version of Make Some Space. Angel conceptualized & named “Transition East” in commemoration of the storied Chicago community center that was a hub for the AACM and icons from the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s, and was recently revived by one of her mentors, Eliel Sherman Storey.

Gábor has now signed to Planet Mu for his new album 'Source' which moves forward with the dance music direction he started to formulate with 'Unfold'. Gábor first fell in love with electronic music simultaneously through dance music and it's IDM offspring, and also with harsher, noisier computer music on labels such as Editions Mego. This collection, which develops slowly over 8 tracks, works its way through his own take on these influences, moving across themes and loops as if each track is a different stage in a process. They first collaborated in 2017, gathering a wish-list band of musical peers, booking a studio, and presenting them with compositions written for the occasion. The Red Book of Ossory' is the debut album from Anakronos, a groundbreaking new ensemble devoted to offering compelling performances of ancient music from an original and modern perspective. 'The Red Book of Ossory' takes its title from the 14th century Irish manuscript of the same name, a collection of texts that includes sixty poems by Richard de Ledrede, Bishop of Ossory, here set to medieval music from England, France, the Netherlands and Italy. Anakronos is comprised of leading interpreters of medieval music, contemporary classical, traditional and jazz: Caitriona O'Leary, voice, Deirdre O'Leary, clarinets, Nick Roth, saxophones and Francesco Turrisi, keyboards and percussion. Anakronos gave the first performance of The Red Book of Ossory in February 2019 to an SRO audience at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. In April 2020 the group will tour The Red Book of Ossory throughout Ireland. Fourteenth century Ireland was a time of invasions, war, lawlessness, famine and plague. A time of fear, violence and almost unimaginable mutability. In 1317 Richard de Ledrede – an English Franciscan of the Order of Friars Minor arrived in Kilkenny as the new Bishop of Ossory (1317 – 1361) and immediately set about challenging the secular authorities and making a name for himself as a zealous moraliser and "scourge of heresy". He was responsible for the famous witchcraft trial of Dame Alice Kyteler, composed a fantastical and nightmarish list of charges against her and others, and caused the first person in recorded history to be burned at the stake for the heresy of witchcraft; Dame Alice's servant, Petronilla de Meath. The Red Book of Ossory was compiled in Kilkenny in the 14th century and is housed there in St Canice's Cathedral. Pre-eminent among the manuscript's texts are sixty remarkable Latin verses by Bishop Richard de Ledrede, who instructed that these lyrics be sung by the priests, clerks and choristers of St Canice's "on the important holidays and at celebrations in order that their throats and mouths, consecrated to God, may not be polluted by songs which are lewd, secular, and associated with revelry, and, since they are trained singers, let them provide themselves with suitable tunes according to what these sets of words require". Accordingly, Caitríona O'Leary the singer and founder of Anakronos, has set de Ledrede's esoteric and imagistic poetry to music from a multitude of medieval sources. O'Leary is recognized as an expert in reconstructing collections of early Irish song and has often found or speculatively reconstructed important historical texts and music. Her edition of The Wexford Carols saw the rediscovery of many of the melodies which were reunited with the texts.

BLOTO EROZJE
Highly-anticipated debut LP from mysterious Polish quartet Bloto, who gained a swift cult following in their native country, with white label copies of 'Erozje' selling out in a matter of hours. They combine rock solid drums - inspired by underground hip hop - with thrilling improvisational jazz, to create a sound that's right on point for 2020. It all started in the summer of 2018 when EABS was touring and the band had a day off. As they were approaching Tricity, people were getting off and eventually there were only four musicians. An evening off, a well-tuned rhythm section on the road, harmonious as can be, and a great deal of creative potential within the members of Bloto band forming at that very moment stirred up common enthusiasm. The album was created without much deliberation, stemming from the need of the heart and the joy of making music together. As a result, 90 minutes of music was recorded of which about 40 made it to 'Erozje'. The music is deeply rooted in brutal hip-hop grooves, referring to the sound of 90's New York. Dirty and uncompromising, this music's strength lies in the drums and bass as its sound refers to classics such as Wu-Tang Clan and Company Flow. Dream Wife (Alice Go, Bella Podpadec and Rakel Mjöll) are back with their second album and just like the title suggests, this is a record brimming with adrenaline and playful excitement (“It’s an invitation, a challenge, a call to action,” says Rakel). From the jagged, CSS-like guitar of “So When You Gonna…” to the hooky brightness of album opener “Sports!” and the whip-smart lyrical asides of “Validation”, these are moreish, pumped up, sparkling tracks that feel like newer, dynamic evolutions of debut standouts, like “F.U.U.” and “Hey Heartbreaker.” But they often lean into sweeter, softer, more emotional moments too. “Temporary” and “After the Rain” in particular – songs about miscarriage and abortion, respectively – are complicated, painful stories told through a soft and hopeful lens. These were difficult subjects to write about, but Dream Wife think it’s important to bring these conversations into the public sphere, to refuse to brush things under the rug, to empower and support others in the process. Dream Wife have always been outspoken about holding up other womxn and non-binary people in the creative industries, but these aren’t just words or sentiments. With a gender divide in music production currently estimated at around ninetyfive percent male to five percent female, the band are proud to have worked with an all-female recording team for So When You Gonna..., including producer and mixer Marta Salogni (Björk, Holly Herndon, FKA Twigs) engineer Grace Banks (David Wrench, Marika Hackman) and mastering engineer Heba Kadry (Princess Nokia, Alex G, Beach House). “It was a way of us practicing what we preach,” says Alice, “It felt like an honour to be able to deliver this baby with these three amazing midwives.” “Put your money where your mouth is!” adds Rakel, quoting the lyrics of “Sports!”

KELEKETLA! KELEKETLA! Release Date: July 3, 2020 Keleketla! Is an outstanding fusion of musical connections, collaborations and cultures. Available on 2LP & CD. Keleketla! is an expansive collaborative project, reaching outward from Johannesburg to London, Lagos, L.A. and West Papua, “Keleketla!” started as a musical meeting ground between Ninja Tune cofounders Coldcut and a cadre of South African musicians,including the raw, South African-accented jazz styles of Sibusile Xaba, and rapper Yugen Blakrok. From those initial sessions, the record grew to encompass a wider web of musical luminaries, including Afrobeat architects Tony Allen and Dele Sosimi and West Papuan activist Benny Wenda. The final product is a future-facing assemblage of influences, drawing connections between different points in a jazz-tipped, soulfully-minded spectrum; it builds outwards, from the solid musical foundations of those first sessions, featuring the likes of Thabang Tabane, esteemed percussionist and son of the legendary Phillip Tabane. On the one hand, there are gqom beats, interlaced with activist chants and live Afrobeat drums; on the other, there are warm, lyrical meditations, aided by horns and keys. Additional contributors include Tenderlonious, Afla Sackey and Antibalas among others. The name “Keleketla” means “response”, as in “call-and-response”, a title which speaks to the project’s aim: to build out a shared musical ground, traced across different recording sessions, continents apart.

Foat has become a versatile mainstay in UK jazz through an acclaimed series of albums on Jazzman and Athens Of The North, moving from soul-jazz workouts to library music to cinematic, haunting compositions and pastoral acid folk. ‘Symphonie Pacifique’ goes expansive and widescreen, building a lush soundscape using choral textures, harp and tubular bells on the atmospheric ‘After The Storm’ alongside sensual groove-based tracks like the undulating ‘Anticipation’, the album title track and Groove Merchant-channelling ‘Nikinakinu’, all driven by Phil Achille on bass, Eric Young on congas and Moses Boyd’s crisp, flowing breakbeats. OVERVIEW London based alternative pop project Jockstrap are sharing their debut Warp EP following their signing and single release, ‘Acid’ from earlier this year. Jockstrap’s instigators Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye have enjoyed a remarkable 18 months since launching their 2018 debut mini-album Love Is the Key to the City and subsequently sharing its beautifully disorienting remix version Lost My Key In The ❤️ Club ❤️ in 2019. Ellery has starred in Cornish film BAIT (which went on to win a BIFA award and won Outstanding Debut at the BAFTAs) and - alongside Cornish-Welsh artist Gwenno - performed the film’s score live on 17 Jan at the BFI. Skye, on the other hand, has developed his own much-lauded solo project and remixed the sublime new album from Arizona’s Injury Reserve (who Jockstrap toured with in the U.K. last year) in its entirety. Ellery has also collaborated with Underworld on their ongoing experimental project, DRIFT. Both Ellery and Skye wrote and performed on Dean Blunt’s 2018 Soul On Fire mixtape (also featuring A$AP Rocky & Mica Levi) Jockstrap were also asked to collaborate and perform at Africa Express’ sold-out one-off show in a circus tent in Walthamstow last year.

Out May 29th, Untenable is the sophomore full-length by Washington, D.C.’s Bad Moves. On this record, the band has leaned into the outer edges of their influences, expanding their power-pop umbrella to include hints of folk, garage rock, and ’90s “indie” while still keeping the hooks tuneful and sticky. Running In Slow Motion, the new record from Claire Birchall is an album of contradictions, a perhaps surprising new direction from a stalwart of Melbourne’s indie rock scene. A darkly emotive synth-pop record, recorded entirely to 4-track, alone in her bedroom, the album is Birchall’s first foray into electronic music and it’s pretty hard to put your finger on. Sometimes it sounds like the soundtrack to an unknown 80’s sci-fi movie, sometimes you could certainly throw the term “darkwave” at it, post-punk maybe, but the songwriting is a bit more classic pop. Owing as much to the influence of The Beach Boys or Big Star as Alan Vega or Depeche Mode. The simplicity of it’s production sits in juxtaposition to the complexity of her songcraft. Rough edges cut through beautiful, layered melodies. Birchall is a master of pop songwriting. Largely known for her melodic rock songs with bands Paper Planes and The Phantom Hitchhikers. A multi-instrumentalist, devotedly DIY, Claire wrote, played and recorded the entire record herself, with the exception of the stark ‘Pretty Boy’ which is a striking cover of a Randy Newman deep cut from his 1979 album Born Again. A record collector and lover of music with broad taste you’ll catch the influence of widely disparate music styles and artists, from the dark Portishead like drone and pulse of ‘Hang It Up ‘ to the Bacharachian splendour of ‘Song For The Man In The Moon’. Claire recently took this new material on a national tour supporting Kim Salmon (The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon) and was compared to the likes of Jonnine Standish (HTRK), Nico and Lana Del Ray, none of which really hit the mark but it’s interesting to see what people are hearing in these songs. Running in Slow Motion is a remarkable record and unique take on the synth pop idiom. Really catchy tracks. We absolutely love it and can’t wait to get it out there.

Their album ”Afropentatonism” features repetitive grooves, hypnotic jams and raw guitar sounds. Five notes per octave are all you ever need. The pentatonic scale is the foundation for almost every other one. Some call it the world's oldest scale, originating in ancient Mesopotamia circa 3000 BC, spreading east up to India, China and Japan and west to the old American nations of the Andes and the Pacific NorthEast. A scale that became essential for the creation of blues, jazz, country and rock music. The idea that pentatonic scales are indispensable for the development of African music is not new – but using it to connect cultures across the continent is still a rare feat. The countries of Niger and Ethiopia may be thousands of kilometres apart, yet they share many commonalities. Both have a rich musical history that is closely linked to younger genres like rock, pop and jazz. Niger and the Western Sahel region are the birthplace of the so called “desert blues” genre, with stars like Ali Farka Touré, “Bombino”, Mariem Hassan or Tinariwen and others, many of them connected to the culture of the Kel Tamashek people (commonly known as “Tuareg”). In Ethiopia, vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke influenced a whole generation of musicians when he infused the scene of Addis Ababa with the modern jazz styles he had picked up in New York City. Two vibrant scenes rooted in ancient musical traditions – a perfect match. When guitarists Alhousseini Anivolla (Niger) and Girum mezmur (Ethiopia) first met in 2005 at a festival in Europe, they were both already established professionals. Alhousseini had been part of the Tinariwen movement, and later on, gained a remarkable reputation with his band Etran Finatawa and his trio Anewal. The Sydney Morning Herald praised his ”gloriously repetitive, traditional music mixed with some of the slickest and most beautiful electric guitar imaginable.” Girum has been a mainstay in Addis Ababa’s live music scene as a guitarist and producer for decades. He is the musical director of Ethiopia’s greatest star Mahmoud Ahmed and has worked with the likes of Angelique Kidjo and Ali Keita. Their new collaborative project “Afropentatonism” fuses some of the most intriguing art of their respective cultures. Repetitive grooves, hypnotic jams and raw guitar sounds shape the album – all amidst the laid-back vocals of Alhousseini, who sings in his native tongue Tamashek. It’s an outstanding pan-African collaboration. The two leaders are joined by percussionist misale legesse and two players of traditional East African instruments: the masinko (one-stringed Ethiopian violin) played by Habtamu Yeshambel and the krar (five-stringed bass-like lyre), played by Anteneh Teklemariam. The sextet is completed by 78-year-old mandolin legend Ayele mamo from Addis. The New York Times hailed Mamo’s playing for its ”honeyed melody”. The album was recorded live during a concert in Nairobi and features extended versions of the original songs. The infectious “Isouwad”, almost nine minutes in length, includes a rousing finale that had every audience member dancing. Quieter songs are amongst the most political tunes on the album. In the dreamy “Algher” (“Peace”), Alhousseini sings about the conflicts in his home region, directly addressing younger generations: “Children of this country protect our peace!”. ”Raise your voice to bring people together no matter which colour and

In recent years, artistic exchange between West and East African countries has become increasingly difficult due to political insecurity and terrorism in the Sahelian belt. But for Alhousseini and Girum, it’s worth the struggle. “Afropentatonism” is a project that is as much about music as it is about friendship, learning and common creation. “We want people in Africa to be proud of their diverse culture and common traditions.” Alhousseini Anivolla and Girum Mezmur have created a glorious example of the power of nonverbal communication. Following two critically acclaimed solo albums and an exciting side project collaboration entitled ‘onDeadWaves’, Polly Scattergood is returning with her fourth studio album on 3rd July, entitled ‘In This Moment’. Sonically, the album is powerful and cinematic, scattered with moments of raw intimacy and delicate soundscapes. Each song is a snapshot of a moment in time. Like a soundtrack to a compendium of photographs, it is a collection of experiences that come together to create an album. In part documenting Polly’s journey towards motherhood, encompassing grief and joy in equal measure, some moments are older than others, but all are now reeected upon from a slightly new perspective. Polly began recording this album shortly after having her rst child, and on a very human level felt this massive sense of freedom, peace, and also wonderment which opened her up artistically to writing again. Sonically, she loves music which feeds her, hearing new things on each listen, and so tried to create many layers and textures within the sounds……res crackling…breathing. She even had a few eld recordings of bells and the sea from time living in Fuerteventura a few years ago. Polly and her producer, Glenn Kerrigan, weaved them into the soundscape very subtly, so occasionally you will catch glimpses of them. Worlds within worlds.

Released initially on hand-numbered cassette on Martin's own Hidden Reality micro imprint in October 2019, Entre Les chambres gets the remaster treatment by n5MD for release on vinyl in early summer of 2020. Those familiar with Martin Haidinger's work as Gimmik might be surprised by an entirely beatless return from Haidinger. However, those that have followed his music know that his synth work is undoubtedly his signature, and Entre Les chambres' two long-form works bring his trademark to the fore, free from the confines of the grid. Entre Les chambres is a highly personal work for Haidinger. And is his first new publicly released Gimmik since he appeared on our MD8 compilation back in 2004.
