This Issue: David Shaw & Mariah Czap at Yep Roc Records same: Superserve the artists we have the privilege to work with by delivering their music to the world in a way that best represents how they want their music released to the world. Ultimately, we want to connect an artist’s music with those who will be most receptive to it - fans both old and new. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? David: I can’t choose, but perhaps the most important Yep Roc release to me is The Mayflies USA, Summertown. I was visiting Chapel Hill in the late 90s and heard it playing in-store at Monster Records (R.I.P.). I asked the guy behind the counter what it was and he handed me the CD case. I saw it was produced by Chris Stamey (a Winston-Salem, hometown hero of mine), heard that this was shimmering pop, and noticed a little lamb with the words, “Yep Roc Records” under it, along with a Chapel Hill address. I was instantly a fan of the band and the label, and I picked up a copy of the CD (in-store play works). Also, I thought, “Whoever runs this label is not from around here,” as the music was not at all the insular indie rock that was all the rage of locals at the time. I was right. How did you personally get started in the music industry? David Shaw: I started as an intern at Mute Records in New York and then in their LA offices, which at the time, were sublet from the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royale offices. It was an incredible experience, where I learned skills I use to this day. But before I moved to New York, I’d spent a couple of years out of college trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After much soul searching I concluded that I wanted to dedicate my career to using my strategic marketing skills to help foster the careers of musical artists. Mariah Czap: I started as an intern at Yep Roc my Junior year of college. I was the Multimedia Intern, so was primarily focused on creating interview/live performance content when artists would come through the area and editing EPKs for the marketing team to use. After my semester interning with Yep Roc, I moved to Decatur, GA for the summer to work with Paste Magazine as an A/V intern. During my Senior year of college, I came back to Yep Roc to intern with the marketing department and at the end of the semester a project manager role opened at the label. I was hired 5 days after I graduated and have been at Yep Roc ever since! When and where did the label begin? David: The label started in 1997 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? David: The founders of Yep Roc Records, Glenn Dicker and Tor Hansen, are both massive Slim Gaillard fans. Slim was a jazz musician and songwriter, who created his own language called “Vout-o-Reenee,” and he even wrote a dictionary of all of the words. He used these words in many of his songs. One such song is called, “Yip Roc Heresy,” which Tor and Glenn used as the inspiration for the label name. How has the label changed since it started? David: The first few releases by Yep Roc were compilation CDs consisting primarily of regional North Carolina artists like Trailer Bride, Portastatic, Tift Merritt, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Whiskeytown. Since then the label has worked with artists from around the globe and become one of the most respected truly independent labels in the world. Artists that have released music on Yep Roc include Nick Lowe, Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet, Aoife O’Donovan, Scott McCaughey,Chatham County Line, Josh Rouse, John Doe, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchock, Fountains of Wayne, Jim lauderdale, Los Straitjackets, Kim Richey, Eli Paperboy Reed, Dressy Bessy, The Apples in Stereo, Watchouse (formerly Mandolin Orange), Elvis Costello, and the list goes on. The biggest change from the early days is that the label is now global and has the ability to build the careers of new artists, but also maintain momentum of artists that may come to Yep Roc as more established artists. We’ve built a reputation of being extremely artist friendly, and everything we do is driven by what is best for the artist long term. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? David: The biggest challenge has probably been the product delays, especially vinyl. But it’s also been difficult not having artists on the road. It’s what Yep Roc artists do; tour. Live shows not happening over the last couple of years have been pretty devastating from a promotional aspect, and more so from a financial aspect. Artists have taken a serious hit. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? Mariah: With our headquarters in Hillsborough, North Carolina, we have a strong connection to the local music scene both in NC and the South in general. From Chatham County Line to Watchhouse to Steep Canyon Rangers, being able to collaborate with the artists making music in our own backyard has always been a foundational part of the label. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? David: While Yep Roc is open to all sorts of music, it has released music in the following genres R&B, Country, Soul, Rock, Power Pop, Rockabilly, Folk, Bluegrass, Alternative, Punk, Indie, Psychedelic. All of those genres could fall under a broader category of Americana Music, as all of those styles are deeply rooted in American music. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? David: As long as I have worked here the overall goals of the label have remained the
How would you describe the average fan of the label? David: The coolest person on earth. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? David: I think it is important to be environmentally sustainable in all aspects of life. But in the music business, as with any business that involves packaged goods, we do need to do better. I’ve always loved the fact that (except for the goofy CD longboxes, and a few other past bad packaging ideas) LPs and CDs have very little “throw-away” packaging. Basically, just shrink wrap and perhaps a sticker or two on that shrink wrap gets tossed after opening the package. However, that’s still a lot of shrink-wrap. And CDs don’t seem to have as long a life as the nearly invincible (if cared for properly) LP, and they are not recyclable. And then there’s the issue of the energy use involved in cloud storage, music streaming servers, smart phones, and everything else used to “consume” music. I love the idea of doing away with shrink wrap and replacing it with some other component that becomes a collectible part of the package. CD wallets have mostly replaced the dreaded jewel case, which is awesome. We are always exploring ways to reduce our waste (we finally stopped making advance CDs a few years ago), but it’s bigger than us. The industry as a whole needs to find solutions to build a more sustainable product life cycle. I don’t have all the answers, unfortunately. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Mariah: Extremely important. As Co-General Managers, David and I are dedicated to creating an environment with the rest of the Yep Roc team that encourages diversity, inclusiveness and empathy. We act openly and transparently with our team and encourage dialogue about different issues our staff might be facing or that are happening in the world around us. Planned Parenthood, Porch, The NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro NAACP are all organizations that are important to the label and we frequently donate to. Personally, I also serve on Redeye’s Diversity and Intersectionality Committee, whose mission is to establish a diverse workforce that supports all traditionally disenfranchised groups and provide educational + training resources to current employees. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? David: Digital. When I started it was all about the CD. I started before ripping a CD was even a thing. Also, the return of the LP. At Alias Records, we made LPs because it was a cool indie rock thing to do, but our bread and butter was CDs. At Nettwerk, we’d make 12” vinyl of remixes to send to DJs/clubs, but those were promo only, for the most part. When I returned to the music business in 2011, after more than a decade away, I felt a bit like Rip Van Winkle. Digital and vinyl were now a thing. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards? Mariah: It would probably be a dream pop label with an annoyingly punny name - like Cosmic Sans or Explanation Point. David: I’m not sure what I’d call the label, as I have a tendency to overthink stuff like this, but in the end I’d probably settle on a really bad name. It would be geared toward power pop. Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Mariah: Oh man, so many to choose from! I love Criminal Records in Atlanta, Harvest Records in Asheville and Grimey’s in Nashville. Some people collect magnets when they travel. I buy vinyl. I’ve also got to give some love to my favorite local record store - Volume in Hillsborough. I love that you can get a beer while you browse. Ideal shopping experience. David: Super tough one, as I love so many stores around the country. But I’m going to go with one that meant a lot to me when I moved from Hollywood to Culver City in the midaughts. SoundSations in Westchester, CA. I’d lived in LA for about 10 years before I knew it existed. It was closer to my house than any of the shops in Hollywood, and it catered to a very local clientele. I found so many great old records in those bins. Very well-curated selection of stuff, primarily from the 60s, 70s and 80s (at that time anyway) for fair prices. I almost regret giving up my honey hole for good finds, but I live in NC now, so whatever!

Caamp formed when Taylor Meier and Evan Westfall met and bonded over a shared love of music and a shared love of home, specifically the inspiration they culled from the Midwest lives they grew up in. The two began writing and performing and quickly grew a rabid fan base. A self-titled 2016 debut album took flight, Evan and Taylor brought on a third member and longtime friend, Matt Vinson, to join on bass just before recording By and By. In week one of the release of their full length, By and By on Mom + Pop, Caamp made multiple chart debuts. By and By entered the Billboard Top 200, was the #1 Heatseeker, #1 on the New Artist Alternative Albums, top 5 vinyl album sales for the week and entered the Alternative and Emerging Artist charts. Caamp then scored their first #1 at radio with their single “Peach Fuzz,” made their late night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and followed that up with a killer performance on CBS This Morning Saturday. After a victorious 2019 festival season playing Firefly, Shaky Knees, Forecastle, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits, Great Escape and many more, Caamp kicked off a major US headlining tour in September of 2019 and sold out show after show. In early 2020, Caamp performed on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The performance was filmed in Caamp’s hometown of Columbus, OH during quarantine. The trio later released their first live EP Live From Newport Music Hall. The five track recording was taken from one of their seminal hometown shows in Columbus, OH. The recording contains live versions of songs off their most recent album, By and By. Not long after the release of Live From Newport Music Hall, Caamp kept themselves busy by releasing the singles and companion videos for “Officer Of Love” and “Fall Fall Fall” via their label home, Mom + Pop. The band then celebrated another victory in 2020 with their single “By and By” resting snugly in the Top 5 Most Spun on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation. They kicked off 2021 with “Officer of Love” hitting #1 at AAA radio for 2 consecutive weeks. In 2022, the band will release their highly-anticipated album “Lavender Days” featuring “Believe”.

Description / Bio: Sergio Sayeg (aka Sessa) has always been entranced by what he calls “the mess” of music: the accidental, tortuous nature of it, a path on which musicians and audiences alike can attain a higher purpose. A love supreme, if you will. While Sessa’s 2019 debut Grandeza explored the corporeal pleasures and gentle drunkenness of being in love, his new album, Estrela Acesa (which translates as Burning Star), gazes up to the heavens and ponders love both sensuous and spiritual, in the throes of its resultant hangover. Sessa was born into São Paulo’s Sephardic Jewish community, and while he describes his religious family as not very musical, temple remains integral to his appreciation of music. “My music education started in the synagogue: the chants, the rituals, the melodies,” he says. “I’m still fond of them.” He remembers Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges’ epochal Clube Da Esquina filed next to the Beatles’red and blue compilations in his family’s record collection. As a teen, he fell for the dirty, raw sound of the Sonics, garage rock, and early New Orleans soul, and when he moved with his family as a teenager to New York City, he became even more immersed in hard rock perennials: Jimi Hendrix, MC5, the Stooges, Black Sabbath. But at a distance, he pined increasingly for the sounds of home, nurturing a deep appreciation for Brazil’s rich musical heritage: Bossa Nova, Tropicália, Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), and more. Playing bass in loud rock bands by night and working at the legendary East Village record shop Tropicália in Furs by day, Sessa immersed himself in the many splendors of the sounds that blended around him. “I was already toying with making my own record and had sketched out some songs.” While always singing in his native Portuguese, Sessa favors the minimalism and poetic directness of writers like Bill Callahan, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen, coupled with the vivid timbres and textures of spiritual seekers like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and Yusef Lateef – artists who transcended their nationalities to achieve ecstatic musical heights. Hints of that liberated jazz sound would first emerge on Grandeza with the ascendant interjections of its backing free jazz ensemble Música de Selvagem. By contrast, on Estrela Acesa, the stunning orchestrations offer smooth transport and gentle transcendence. It is an album of conflicting urges in sweet balance. At once intimate and grandiose, Sessa finds reason to celebrate the magic of life amid the crushing reality of the present. Our heart is fragile and indestructible. OVERVIEW When Martin Courtney was a teenager, he knew how to get lost. In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, there’s Martin, 17 or 18, loaded into a car with friends, stoned and aimless. They’re navigating the suburban sprawl of New Jersey with no destination in mind. He and his friends would “get thoroughly confused and look for familiar green signs with arrows pointing to towns we’d heard of. We’d call them ‘magic signs,’” he says, sitting in his home studio in Beacon, New York, where he wrote the songs that make up Magic Sign, the second solo album from the Real Estate songwriter. That’s the thing about magic: when you go looking for it, you start to see it everywhere. And you can hear it twinkingly throughout the 10 songs on Magic Sign. Written throughout 2020 and 2021, the album came together late at night, while Courtney’s kids slept upstairs and his wife worked overnight shifts at the hospital, a role reversal from his former days out on tour while she stayed home with their family. Nostalgia is naturally woven into Courtney’s sensibility, but he doesn’t spend the entire record looking back. Many of these are his most present tense to date—but a youthful exuberance does propel it forward. Courtney notes that he imagined the songs emerging in a post-pandemic world, providing a soundtrack for better days of relief and optimism.

Following Warren Zevon’s death in 2003, his son Jordan Zevon discovered 126 unreleased outtakes and demos in a piano-sized touring case. In essence, The Dance were not just ahead of their time... they were right on time. Emerging at the turn of the decade from punk’s three-chord nihilism, whose idea of dancing was to jump up and down or bang heads, The Dance brought a free-wheeling, jagged, dissonant art-funk stomp you couldn’t help but move your body to, ushering the migration from downtown clubs like CBGB and Max’s to the uptown Hurrah, Danceteria and Peppermint Lounge, where DJs now held forth between live sets, with a return to self-invented fashion. The Dance also surfed the emerging post-punk No Wave scene around them, along with the B-52s, DEVO, Bush Tetras, Arto Lindsay’s DNA, ESG, the Lounge Lizards, James Chance, Lydia Lunch, the Slits and PiL. Showing their pedigree, The Dance even covered Stevie Wonder’s pre-Talking Book “Do Yourself A Favor” on their second album, Soul Force. They got the beat alright. A childhood Beatles fascination grows well next to the sounds of the golden state, weaving vivid guitar into operatic commentary veiled in a true California partly-cloudy forecast. In their newest album, Ramon, Nichols queers a canonical musical figure, using theatrical lyrics to paint vignettes of white rabbit adventures and very real social pressures all within a DIY ethos. “You learn early on that no one is going to do it for you, or that what you are wanting to see or hear doesn’t exist, so you need to do it yourself with your friends.” Each track is a three to four minute romp inside a specific emotion, playing out theatrical puzzle pieces that build on each others’ sounds. There’s so much to be said about the perfectly fuzzed strings and how they fit seamlessly into powerfully catchy lyrics, versatile and relevant percussion, etc. There’s also so much to say about how fun it is to just listen to it happen. Their work touches on sounds that might feel homey to those of us who have been listening to the likes of Kill Rock Stars’ Elliott Smith, bounces distinctly off of the 1960’s technicolor daisy of the British Invasion and matures into Nichols’ specific artistry. It’s intricate, cathartic work made by and for the people who need it.

The fans keep me going.” “Not to get all spiritual about it,” adds Michicoff, “but when we were younger, we played really hard for nobody, and now the fans do all the work for us. Daniel Michicoff (bass/vocals), Chad Wachtel (guitar/vocals), and Phil Shaheen (drums/vocals) became friends when they were teenagers in Long Beach, California, and started playing music together soon after, eventually becoming one of the shining stars of the twenty-first century garage-rock revival scene—a (relatively) chill surf-rock-inspired complement to the ruckus of acts like Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees. But while many of their initial contemporaries have gone through lineup changes or thrown in the towel, the Panthers are hanging tough—and, in a sense, just hitting their stride. “I feel like this was our most relaxed process yet,” says Michicoff of the band’s sixth LP, Halfway to Eighty, an album whose title serves as a sly embrace of getting older, with a little bit of the Panthers’ trademark sense of humor sprinkled in there for good measure. (On the cover, they gather around their imaginary midlife-crisis Delorean.) It’s a brotherhood that’s only gotten more instinctual over time, and lately that second-nature approach has found each member taking on a more forward role in crafting their own individual songs, which the trio then works out together before hitting the studio. On Halfway to Eighty, riff-heavy anthems like “Helping Hand” are courtesy of Wachtel, while art-rock thrashers like “Slacker” are Shaheen’s handiwork, and smirking punk numbers like “False Equivalent” are Michicoff’s. (“What good can it bring now? / We’re barely evolved” sings Michicoff on that last song, a squall of guitars swirling around his trembling tenor.) When you keep an ear out for them, you can hear each distinct personality in the songs, but taken as a whole, it’s yet another primo Panthers set of post-Cramps, post-DEVO outsider rock and roll. That’s partially through the help of regular Panthers collaborator Jonny Bell (Crystal Antlers, Chicano Batman, The Gun Club [reissue]), Hanni El Khatib, Lovely Bad Things, Rudy De Anda), who produced the set at his Jazzcats Studio in Long Beach. Bell has proved to have something of a sixth sense in working with the band, so there was no one better to capture the sound they were going after this time, either. For much of the record, the band was working with the mindset of channeling some of the production sound and attitude of local punk legends like Black Flag and Circle Jerks. “What I told Jonny when he was mixing ‘Slacker,’” remembers Shaheen, “was, like, ‘Just keep it South Bay,’ and he already knew what I was saying.” But as much as the band has matured over the years, they still know how to put together an album efficiently, without messing around. They’re professionals, after all—and there’s bills to pay, too. “We don’t have the luxury to go in the studio for days on end,” laughs Shaheen. “I don’t know how other bands do it.” Taken at full, Halfway to Eighty is an embrace of much more than just a band. It’s a statement of dedication to the calling of music—to sticking with making

LISTEN HERE Glenn Jones is a unique player in the world of solo guitar music. Steeped in both American Primitive guitar music as well as rock and experimental music, Glenn Jones creates rich sonic tapestries with a distinct and stirring voice. Endlessly curious, Jones has spent the better part of four decades exploring the boundaries of expression and storytelling with the guitar and banjo. On Vade Mecum, Jones draws on his personal history to tell stories with elaborate musical detail and emotional weight. Exploring the complexity of personal experience, emotions and our shared histories, Vade Mecum finds Jones painting his music in boundaryless colors, captivatingly vivid. Jones’ recordings are indelible to his surroundings. Vade Mecum was recorded in March of 2021 on Mount Desert Island in Maine with longtime collaborator Matthew Azevado. The crisp, thin Atlantic air seeps its way into Jones’ playing. After delaying the recording for a full year and bringing on Azevado to fill the shoes of Jones’ usual engineer, Laura Baird, the album took altogether different shapes than what Jones had initially intended. The challenges and triumphs of a world recapitulating but altogether changed is thoroughly interrogated in the liminal spaces highlighted by Jones throughout the album. “Vade Mecum means, literally, ‘go with me.’,” says Jones. “It’s an invitation.” With that invitation opening the album, Jones acts as a guide across the terrain of interiors and exteriors alike. “I tend to think of my albums as the latest entries into something like an ongoing musical diary,” Jones continues. “I don’t write pieces to order or with anything much in mind; I simply follow wherever the music leads me. Why this tuning? Why this note and not that one? Why this chord and not another? Why this tempo and not a different one? I don’t know, and I love not knowing. The ‘not knowing’ is what keeps me engaged and curious; ‘not knowing’ keeps me coming back.” Jones uses those questions of tempo and chords alongside unique open tunings and capos as a way of posing musical questions to himself which he in turn answers with sublime stories that unveil as much about Jones himself as they uncover memories or impressions of their subjects. Jones makes each passage as personal as the last as he dexterously imbues every note with precise emotion.

LISTEN HERE Tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson and drummer Hamid Drake had the closest of relationships, as close as a father and son might have. Their communication was at a higher level musically and emotionally. The music on this album reflects not only their masterful musical skills, but a conversation in music that is exceptionally powerful and unique. For From the River to the Ocean, they assembled a band consisting of fellow Chicagoans to record the most relaxed, perfectly balanced album they made together. It may seem hyperbolic to call From the River to the Ocean Fred Anderson’s greatest album, but the empathy and cohesiveness of the ensemble, coupled with the saxophonist’s brilliant, searching improvisations, makes it a powerful contender. From the River to the Ocean is an especially varied outing, ranging from Anderson’s classic set-closing blues “Strut Time” to the meditative, spiritual, modal track “For Brother Thompson,” dedicated to the late trumpeter Malachi Thompson and featuring bassist Harrison Bankhead on brooding piano and Drake chanting in Arabic. The record’s title track and the closer, “Sakti/Shiva,” find bassist Josh Abrams laying down an astounding bed on guimbri, the threestringed Moroccan acoustic bass familiar to fans of Gnawa music. Another of the album’s delights is guitarist Jeff Parker, well known Jazz guitarist as well as member of Tortoise. Here, Parker displays an immense sensitivity and melodic genius, sharing solo spotlight with Bankhead’s cello on “From the River to the Ocean” and sculpting a stunning array of shapes on the group’s swinging take on Anderson’s “Planet E.” Underneath it all is Hamid Drake, an intensely creative soul continuing to challenge himself. Drake’s growth is not measured in how many different instruments he plays – indeed, he’s scaled back his arsenal over the years – but in the depth and musicality of his feeling. On this record he is remarkably light and airy, playing with tremendous delicacy and clarity. Propulsion can be introduced without a pneumatic drill, and Drake instigates an avalanche of rolling forward momentum on the opening moments, inspiring the two basses and guitarist to move, to make something moving, and in turn to further inspire Fred Anderson to some of his most forceful and imaginative playing ever documented. If the individual is a small receptacle of expressivity, a mountain spring if you will, then it is in ideal settings like this one that the springs join forces, turning into streams, then bigger and bigger tributaries, finally swelling into rivers that open into the oceanic creative waterways. Thank goodness Anderson and Drake tapped into that wellspring, drawing directly from the source.

OVERVIEW As might be expected from his complex yet harmonious recordings, Miro Denck thinks a lot about duality. Two halves of a whole, competing instincts, echo, counterpoint, the overlap in the Venn diagram--nothing exists on its own, in a vacuum. The mystic meaning even doubly announces itself twice in the name of his solo project name, thanks to the two-dotted umlaut: TWÏNS. “I work with myself as my own partner, my twin,” the Berlin-based artist says. “But I also think of us all as being cosmic twins, of being the same of any other human, of the same universal matter.” That insistence on interconnectivity powers Denck’s latest, The Human Jazz, an intimate record that binds joy and pain closely together. Album opener “Desert Mother'' acts as the fern-lined foyer, a humid, jazz-indebted instrumental intro complete with hovering flute courtesy of Martha Rose. Inspired as much by Can as by The Beatles, Denck weaves from spiritual expanse to the concentrated punch of a good hook--as evidenced on lead single “Peace”. On the sprawling album closer, a George Harrison-esque lead guitar slips and bends over the loping rhythm, as Denck meditates on the concepts of control and vulnerability. “Now I try to grow in spirit/ And put means above the ends/ Because to love means to give up in the most beautiful sense,” he sighs, bongos and vintage synth framing his effortless vocals. The album’s late ‘70s experimentalism springs in part from the close community Denck has found in Neukölln, a district in Berlin that others tapped into the era might recognize as having given the title to a piece on David Bowie’s Heroes. The neighborhood brims with vintage stores and cafes, jazz clubs and dive bars, a vibrant art and music scene spread throughout. “There’s a strong DIY spirit here, people making exciting art between those streets full of garbage, in a way maybe similar to what I imagine New York City in the ‘70s must have felt like,” Denck laughs. The wide array of sounds pulsing through The Human Jazz reflect the diversity of Neukölln as well as Denck’s extensive library. Tracks like “Some Kind of Space” wobble and groove, vintage ‘60s Philicorda organ vamping over the top a la Zamrock and other East African styles. The sleigh bells and droning keys of “Anatman”, meanwhile, are pulled from the vibes of another African music explorer: “Alice Coltrane is a goddess to me,” Denck says. “I spend so much of my time

The titular track, Cool Down The Dance, opens with a jittery fragmented drum pattern and wooshing stereo effects, lending a slightly disorienting feel to the intro before the well known vocal refrain leads into a monster amen drop. Deep subs, amen breaks and steely stabs roll out this dance floor banger. This is followed up with an absolute behemoth of a track. Horse Mout’ utilises an infamous vocal sample in a fresh way, building upon the intro with waves of dubwise effects before launching into a devastating onslaught. With support from scene stalwarts DJ Storm and Flight this one has been smashing up dance floors! The third track is a remix of Cool Down The Dance by Loxy, bringing his inimitable cool production style to the fore, stripping away the amen layers to reveal something for the darker corners of the dance. One for the head noders and the eyes down crew. The final track, Satta, is a nod to the dub of Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, and On U Sound. A slow boiling minimal intro that drops into the extreme minimalism of just a kick drum and sub bass line belies the swagger of the eventual drop. Music is a language that can translate that sensation, feeling, the memory of love.” — Hatis Noit There isn’t a more unique entry into a musical journey than that of Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit, who today announces her much anticipated debut album Aura will be released June 24 on Erased Tapes. Her musical awakening took place at the tender age of sixteen during a trek to Buddha's birthplace in Nepal. One morning when staying at a women’s temple she came across a female monk singing Buddhist chants whose otherworldly sounds moved her so intensely that she was instantly aware of the visceral power of the human voice; a primal and instinctive instrument that connects us to the very essence of humanity, nature and our universe. From that moment she knew singing was her calling. The album title Aura was inspired by the German philosopher Walter Benjamin who used this term to describe the fundamental essence of art, which he believed is strongest in its original form, only happening once. Hatis agrees with this particular aspect as she realised, “during the pandemic, I really struggled. As a singer, I’m not very good at working on the computer. I much prefer doing live performances in physical spaces. Being with people, sharing the same space with them and feeling the atmosphere and energy of that moment, inspires me every time. To me art is that — that shared moment.” The gravitas of the pandemic caused Noit to look inwards and reflect. This resulted in the album becoming a remedy for what was going on in the world and ultimately to remember the joys and richness of life. Hatis adds to this sentiment, “we cannot live forever, do everything or be everywhere. But that makes our lives unique and invaluable. I wanted to be focused on our limitations and show how precious life is.” With Aura released on June 24, this summer sees Hatis Noit return to the stage at unique venues and festivals including The Great Escape, Grace Jones’ Meltdown and WOMAD in the UK, Jardins Efemeros in Portugal, Haldern Pop and Berlin’s Kiezsalon series in Germany.

More modern, aggressive electric guitars, distorted colors and drums provide a strikingly ominous, propulsive backdrop to his more intense moments. Alexis Grapsas says this about the film’s score: “The score was born after lots of trial and error and experimentation under the guidance and vision of the filmmakers, where we tried very original acoustic and electric sounds. In the process of creating an environment that would capture the lead character’s emotional world, we landed on a very unique raw and gritty sound that remains true to the story while being self-aware.” The NEON film, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski was released in theaters on July 16th.

Dr Death aired on the Peacock streaming service and is based on the podcast of the same name about real life neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch (played by Joshua Jackson), whose patients tended to end up maimed or dead. The miniseries also stars Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater and AnnaSophia Robb, and you can watch the trailer below. "Our approach to the score was based in imprecision," Leopold tells us. "Whether it be the way the cello is bowed, or the tuning of an oscillator, the idea was ‘let ’s set up all of our tools in the wrong way, and start writing from there." The score is by Atticus Ross, who has worked with Trent Reznor on scores for Watchmen, The Social Network, Soul and more, along with brother and onetime Error bandmate Leopold Ross and regular collaborator Nick Chuba.

Caligonaut announces the release of his debut solo album Magnified as Giants. Caligonaut is a solo project by artist Ole Michael Bjørndal, a guitarist best known for his work with Oak, Airbag and Bjørn Riis Band. Bjørndal has composed the music, written the lyrics and also performs leadvocals and guitars. The performers on the record include members of Wobbler, Airbag, Oak, Pymlico and Meer, and a special guest appearance by Norwegian church organ legend Iver Kleive. Magnified as Giants contains four songs within a classic prog rock landscape inspired by the guitar and bass work of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Rush but blended with the more modern sounds of Tool and Opeth. Several of the pieces are written in Robert Fripp new standard tuning. The album also features an extended use of vintage keyboards played by Wobbler keyboardist Lars Fredrik Frøislie. Caligonaut is a word composed of the Latin words for mist or dimness,”caligo” & and traveller/navigator, & “naut”, lyrical themes that are also prominent on the album. The album artwork was created by visual artist Marte Bjørndal, who has held exhibitions in Brazil, South Africa, China and Russia. The photography is by Anne-Marie Forker, known primarily for her work with Marillion. The album is mixed by Lars Fredrik Frøislie and mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo. OVERVIEW Gaute Storsve Trio is merging Nordic jazz with Latin American music. The music on this album has been inspired by a plethora of different genres expanding from Cuban son and old Mexican boleros to 70s jazz rock and prog.
Storsve lived and worked in Havana, Cuba, where he befriended The Cuban percussionist Angel Terry Domech. Terry has played with a multitude of Cuban musicians like Buena Vista Social Club with whom he toured and recorded for several years. On this album he is playing the traditional West African drums batá on the tracks “¿Nada? ¡Nunca!” and “Beta Batá Beat”. The album title, “El Gran Gotzilla”, is borrowed from vintage Guatemalan fireworks (cohetería). The title track expresses this explosive intensiveness musically. The opening track “las dos Fridas” is inspired by Frida Kahlo’s painting with the same name and expresses pain and beauty simultaneously. “Lucha Libre” is written as a traditional well-choreographed Mexican wrestling match. Different instruments, tonalities and time signatures are fighting for the glory. “Einar” is about the sadness you experience when you are gradually losing someone to dementia. Two other guest musicians are brought along: the amazing improvisation musician Jørgen Mathisen, best known from Krokofant, and the very talented violinist Ingrid Berg Mehus, best known as a session musician with several Norwegian artists.

Led by guitarist, keyboardist and singer Glenn Brigman, with drummer Brendan Peleo-Lazar and bassist/guitarist Stephen Burns, the trio is continually discovering their sound through a complex map of familiar influences and bold choices in tonality, structure and texture. On their new long-playing record “So Many Days”, Triptides rolls and flows into some new territory in a way that feels natural. The group has exchanged fuzz guitars for chiming acoustics, phaser pedals for pedal steels and Farfisa for harmonica. This is a transformation long in the making. Starting in 2010 in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, Brigman was making albums as Triptides with roommates and friends in a raw, Beach Boys-meet-Cleaners-From-Venus cassette-induced haze. As the band moved West, so did their influences, and Los Angeles brought out a more sophisticated element in Triptides. Doors-inspired organ flourishes and driving, Stereolab-esque movements melded with the spirit of The Byrds in the Fifth Dimension, as the trio both on stage and in the studio opened up a new sonic world. After the otherworldly “Alter Echoes”, released to highly critical acclaim earlier this year, the group has joined up with LA’s Curation Records to release their forthcoming love letter to the Laurel Canyon Sound, “So Many Days”. Written and recorded in the San Bernardino mountains, these songs show a more grounded and pensive side of their ever-evolving sonic landscape. On new record For The Birds, Atlanta-based Neighbor Lady expand the boundaries of their country-kissed indie rock sound to encompass an elegant style of lush and textural guitar pop sprinkled with, as songwriter and vocalist Emily Braden puts it, with “reverb and magic.” Full of gorgeous top-line melodies, spirited rock hooks, and Braden’s richly emotive vocals (and plenty of twang), For The Birds takes a kaleidoscopic approach to genre. Different Drum: The Lost RCA Victor Recordings features 22 tracks drawn from the RCA Victor vaults, every one of which is previously unreleased on vinyl. Over six RCA albums released between 1970 and 1973, Nesmith blossomed as a singer, songwriter, bandleader, and producer under the aegis of RCA Nashville legends Chet Atkins and Felton Jarvis. With bandmates including legendary pedal steel guitarist O.J. “Red” Rhodes, John Ware, and John London, Nesmith pioneered country-rock with a spiritual and searching style all his own. WATERMELON MAN (Green “Watermelon Skin” Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: JULY 1, 2022 In an extraordinary career spanning seven decades, director and “godfather of black cinema” Melvin Van Peebles only made one studio film. 1970’s Watermelon Man shattered conventions with its bitingly satirical story about a white couple, intolerant and obnoxious insurance salesman Jeff Gerber (Godfrey Cambridge) and his seemingly liberal wife Althea (Estelle Parsons). One morning, Jeff awakens to discover that his skin color has changed from white to black–and it’s not a result of his daily tanning routine. Unable to successfully change back, he learns what it’s like to live in America as a black man, and his eyes are opened. The uncompromising Watermelon Man shocked audiences in 1970 and remains all too relevant today. Accompanying the scathing comedy was an original soundtrack composed by Van Peebles himself, then recording for A&M Records and about to take on Broadway with a pair of Tony Award-nominated musicals. The soundtrack to Watermelon Man was released on the small Beverly Hills label, preserving Van Peebles’ enjoyably eclectic score – blending jazz, funk, rock, rhythm and blues, proto-rap, and even bluegrass – and the songs “Love, That’s America” and “Soul’d on You” as well as a special appearance by Estelle Parsons on “Where Are the Children.” All that and Ry Cooder, too: the slide guitar virtuoso, while uncredited, is said to have played the indelible slide parts throughout the album! Watermelon Man came to be overshadowed by Van Peebles’ seminal follow-up Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song and the album disappeared, too. But the time has never been more right to rediscover Van Peebles’ prescient film and its killer soundtrack. Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records’ first-ever vinyl reissue (and first reissue in any format) of Watermelon Man features remastered audio from Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision as well as an insert with on-set photos and liner notes by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese, with a green, “watermelon skin” pressing. “Love, That’s America” was adopted decades after its original release as an anthem for the Occupy Wall Street movement. Start spreading the news: Liza Minnelli’s long-lost live album recorded in the very heart of New York, New York is getting the deluxe vinyl and even more deluxe CD treatment from Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records! When the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winning superstar (and future Grammy Legend) took the stage at the legendary Carnegie Hall on September 4, 1979, the concert was already a hotly-anticipated event. It would be the first of eleven consecutive shows through September 14–the longest run in the Hall’s history. Not only that, but every show in the five-level, 2,804-seat venue was sold out. (This record stood until 1987, when an artist played three straight weeks of sold-out shows there. That artist? Liza Minnelli.) Liza had the foresight to record three nights of concerts; two years later, in 1981, she began selling the limited release at her live dates. The Live at Carnegie Hall double album preserved Liza’s electrifying, roof-raising evening from start to finish, including definitive versions of familiar showstoppers such as John Kander and Fred Ebb’s “Cabaret,” “But the World Goes ‘Round,” and “Theme From ‘New York, New York’” as well as fresh versions of contemporary pop and classic Broadway standards from luminaries including George and Ira Gershwin, Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, Barry Manilow, and Melissa Manchester. But, deprived of proper retail distribution, the album never reached a wide audience…until now!

On vinyl, its 2 LPs will be housed inside a gatefold jacket featuring the absolutely stunning original cover art by Andy Warhol. The insert has new introductions by both Ms. Minnelli and Great American Songbook champion Michael Feinstein, both of whom served as executive producers for this release, plus photos of the artist and liner notes from reissue producers Joe Marchese and Charles L. Granata. The audio has been fully remastered from the original tapes by Mike Milchner at SonicVision for a front-row musical experience. But we have prepared something extra-special for the CD release. Liza also kept pristine multitrack tapes of all three nights recorded at Carnegie Hall. Any band that names itself after a Russ Meyer film has a reputation to uphold. And with tracks like “Big Dictionary” (get it?), the fourth track on their 1992 album Whipped!, Faster Pussycat did just that, along with other blasts of Sunset Strip braggadocio like “Out with a Bang” (not to mention the dominatrix on the front cover)! But a closer listen reveals a band hitting its hard rock stride right at the wrong time, when grunge flannel was supplanting eyeliner and big hair in the hearts of American youth. The minor hit “Nonstop to Nowhere” had a classic, country-ish Stones vibe, and “Mr. Lovedog” was a heartfelt tribute to deceased Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood; those were just two highlights on an album that was funny, surprisingly varied, and tuneful. In short, Whipped! got largely ignored in the wake of the early ‘90s Nirvana-inspired craze but it deserved a better fate. For its firstever U.S. vinyl release (the European vinyl release is real rare and pricy), we’ve whipped up (sorry) a milky clear “whipped cream” vinyl pressing limited to 2000 copies, nestled inside a jacket with inner sleeve sporting lyrics. For those who like some raunch with their roll!

• 1974’s Two Is, Confusingly, Their Third Album
Brothers Adrian and Paul Gurvitz were responsible for some of the most progressive hard rock sounds of the late ‘60s and ‘70s, first in The Gun, and later with Cream drummer Ginger Baker in The Baker Gurvitz Army. In between those two bands, though, was the one that was perhaps the best of the bunch; Three Man Army put out three records from 1971 to 1974 that would nestle nicely in your heavy British rock collection next to, say, Cactus and Jeff Beck’s Truth and Beck-Ola records. 1974’s Two was, confusingly, their third album, and it’s safe to say they saved their best for last. “Polecat Woman” kicks off the record with a Led Zep-like boogie stomp, “Today” is very Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac, and “Flying” almost sounds like a harder version of Badfinger. But the highlight might be “I Can’t Make the Blind See,” which, with its orchestration and soulful vocals, almost sounds like a power ballad done by Traffic. This overlooked ‘70s hard rock platter gets a long-overdue vinyl reissue with a cobalt blue pressing limited to 1500 copies!

Strut present the first ever official compilation bringing together the complete in-demand reggae / disco singles of Risco Connection between 1979 and 1980. Drummer “Drummie” Joe Isaacs had already created history as the house drummer at Studio 1 in Jamaica on countless prereggae classics before moving to Canada in 1968 and is credited with slowing down the fast pace of ska during the rocksteady era. With Risco Connection, Isaacs released a series of choice reggae / disco covers, from ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now’ and ‘Good Times’ to ‘I’m Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)’ and ‘It’s My House’ as limited 12” singles on his own Black Rose imprint. “Arriving in Canada, we were one of the first set of musicians out of Jamaica coming here,” explains Isaacs. “With Risco Connection, we wanted to try something new, songs that would have a crossover between disco and the rocksteady feeling and the right lyrics. Isaacs also called on a number of great independent vocalists including Terry Hope (‘It’s My House’), Merlyn “Lorna” Brooks, (‘Caught Up’), Otis Gayle and Juliette Morgan (‘Bringing The Sun Out’ and ‘Sitting In The Park’) and Tobi Lark (‘Good Times’). The biggest hit of all the singles was Risco’s dynamite cover of McFadden and Whitehead’s ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now’. selling over 5,000 copies in Toronto and New York with the dub version becoming a firm favourite of David Mancuso at his famed Loft parties. ‘Risco Version’ brings together all of the vocal versions, dubs and extra tracks from the singles. Both formats feature an interview with Joe Isaacs and liner notes by journalist Angus Taylor. Audio is restored by Sean P and fully remastered and cut loud and proud by The Carvery.

NAOMI ALLIGATOR DOUBLE KNOT Naomi Alligator is fed up. She’s sick of trying to make relationships work that have already run their course, and tired of sitting in a wintry apartment waiting for her life to kick into gear. On her forthcoming album Double Knot via Carpark Records, the modern folk singer/ songwriter from Virginia attempts to unwind her life from all that is holding her back. In a way, it’s a coming-of-age record about shedding what no longer serves you and, ultimately, finding something like deliverance. On the opening track, “Seasick,” Naomi Alligator is already in the midst of a sort of awakening. Right off the bat, she sings, “I don’t know what’s happened to me / It’s like I turned 16 / It’s like I grew to be 6-feet tall.” This is the announcement of a wide-eyed artist coming out of hibernation and into their own. Still, Naomi’s vocals ache with guilt and longing, belying the track’s playful catchiness. Longing for what? Maybe attention from a crush, but mostly a sunnier place to call home. Naomi Alligator began writing Double Knot while living in Philadelphia during the height of the pandemic and the deterioration of a longterm romance. “I scream: How’d the hell I end up here? / I’m 1-inch tall, it’s crystal clear,” she chants on “Neighborhood Freak,” returning to height and size as an emotional barometer. When asked though, Naomi rejects the notion that Double Knot is a breakup album, or autobiographical at all. Moreso, she says, it’s a personal reckoning in which, “the minute before you make a big decision, you tally up the reasons why you don’t want to do what you’re doing anymore.” That desire to turn the page expands to the production of the album as well. Naomi Alligator generally houses her narratives in beds of minimal, home-tracked instrumentation—influenced by the stripped-down poeticism of Joan Baez and Liz Phair’s Girly-Sound tapes. Double Knot finds Naomi continuing to hone the winning combination of guitar and banjo she established on 2021’s Concession Stand Girl EP. For Double Knot though, Naomi wanted a fuller, more dynamic sound: more instruments, more harmonies, more layering, more, more, more. Inspired by the impressionistic melodies of Animal Collective and MGMT, Naomi peppers in computer-generated synths throughout the album, most notably on the song “Burn Out.” These electronic flourishes augment the more grounding string instruments, arriving somewhere more ethereal than Naomi’s earlier work while still maintaining her warm songwriting. If anything, Double Knot is a reminder that you can always pack up your bags, try something new, and change your life. As for Naomi Alligator herself? She moved west, to California.

MATTSON 2 PARADISE
When things are right, they’re right; it’s rare that everything falls into place. It’s rarer still to capture that feeling on wax, which is what The Mattson 2 have achieved with their latest album, Paradise. It’s their second release on Chaz Bear’s (fka Chaz Bundick, aka Toro y Moi) Company Records, and first without Bear as a member of the band. The identical twins, Jared (guitars) and Jonathan (drums), have left their trademark virtuosity on display; within the 32-minute runtime they’ve managed to capture the arc of an entire relationship between two people. You can tell from how warm the guitars sound — we go from emotional equilibrium to longing to happiness to loss. “For years and years you’ve been on my mind,” they sing, and mean it. When the Mattsons sing the line “you’re so special, you’re so easy” it’s easy to forget they’re not talking to you.

Even so, it’s a record to throw a frisbee to — it’s a sylphlike, sylvan thing, meant to be used and enjoyed. “We don’t want people to think too hard,” they say. “We want to let people in!” That’s perhaps because it’s the first album they’ve written and recorded in their home, which is a wooden cabin in the hills of San Diego. You can hear the sun in the keyboards, in the 80s-inflected jazz. The singing is new, too. What it adds up to is a bigger, bolder sound than their previous work; the brothers say they went into it trying out a conceptually new, cohesive sound — a new sonic palette to create from. It’s a little bit of summer you can savor all year long.

They’ve been playing shows for 15 years without any vocals; on Paradise, though, the twins have added their voices to the mix, which adds a welcome new human dimension to the record. “No matter how much someone loved the instrumental set they’d ask if we sang!” Jared said. Even so, the lyrics are meant to be abstract, to conjure a mood. If you listen closely you’ll be able to discern what the Mattson brothers are feeling. There’s longing, in songs that are about getting what you want and realizing it’s not actually the right thing; there’s lyrics about not being free, in both the capitalist system and in the creative one. There’s a song about a loved one dying from an overdose. There are deep themes here, even if the subjects are treated lightly. On “Naima’s Dream,” which opens the album, the Mattsons lock into a buoyant melody; it sounds like the feeling of lying in a park on a carefree, sunny day, watching the dogs chase the people throwing frisbees in the distance. That feeling carries through the rest of the album, too; on “Essence,” which describes a relationship in progress. “You’re so special, you’re so easy,” the Mattsons sing over a lush guitar arrangement propelled by a truly grooving bass line. The range of human experience is vast, and the Mattsons have managed to capture a piece of it in stunning detail. Being alive demands every kind of adjective: difficult, boring, fun, sustaining, affirming, renewing, reviving, strenuous, punishing, arbitrary, unfeeling, inconvenient, and everything in between. The slice that the Mattsons describe in this album is uniformly sweet, but inflected with the knowledge of how quickly things can change, and how, most of the time, it’s hard to recognize that they’re changing until the metamorphosis is already complete.

Oog Bogo are a four-piece rock band from Los Angeles and their new album is Plastic — an electrifying set of songs and sounds that just don’t stop, working like a machine that makes joy and endless flips and repetitions, whether in front of the turntable or out in the real world. In the past several years, Oog Bogo dropped two records that previewed this explosion in wildly divergent ways: 2019’s “Oogbogo” EP (GOD?017) with wigged-out production, its contorted fun house mirror images pulling punk, psych and new wave in and out of focus in a chaotic procession of mutant tunes. 2021’s “EP2” radiates a starkly different vibe, as chilled-out guitar-pop tunes conjure a flowing medley of plaintive echoes and atmospheres in a mellow mist of hiss. Kevin Boog recorded these records in a largely hermetic state: at home on 4-track, playing all the parts, slowly drawing out the sounds. The songs for Plastic were demoed this way too, as a starting point for a group interpretation — but when, for obvious ’20-’21 reasons, logistics prevented everyone from getting in the same room to even rehearse, the planned recording session at Ty Segall’s Harmonizer Studios took on a different shape. Starting off with only drummer Thomas Alvarez (Audacity) to accompany him, Kevin realized that any obstacles to getting the record made were also opportunities, for something else that was also right to happen. Rather than reach for the design of the demos, he kept himself in the present moment, approaching every passage as fluidly as possible, playing what he needed to play, staying open
to what he needed to know. It didn’t hurt that the laptop with all his songs crashed right after he walked into the studio! There was no way possible but forward. The direction was right on with the guys at Harmonizer — Ty Segall’s sense of imagination made him the ideal production counterpart to walk together with Kevin into this world, psyched to experiment and ready to get weird at any time. Ty and engineer Matt Littlejohn met all requests and requirements in the form of sounds, with gear and approaches that amazed and delighted, and an eternally ebullient spirit. As this was Oog Bogo’s first time recording away from home, Kevin was a kid in a candy store — where the store owner turns out to be a Wonka-esque philanthropist! As band members Mike Kreibel (Dirty & His Fists) and Shelby Jacobson (Shannon Lay) joined the session, there was a synchronicity and community with everyone involved, finding an unexpected road to realizing the songs, with all the colors and hues they added making everything pop that much harder. Fluidity was key: Plastic’s tunes depict a polymorphic cast of characters. As in life, they leap avidly from style to style; from pretty psych rock to new wave apocalypse disco and harsh post punk bleakness, sometimes in a verse and a half. Corkscrewing over and over like a riff-driven space-coaster, morphing in and out of each successive moment with increasing momentum and gravity, Plastic defines and redefines Oog Bogo, with sweet tunes, barely-controlled intensity and sharp production moves — a killer first album and an equally killer evolving state of mind.

Now The Umbrellas are back with "Write It In The Sky," an instant-classic that simply demanded to be pressed onto a 7" single. Clocking in at just under 3 minutes, "Write It In The Sky" is a thrilling pop rush full of fuzz, melody and excitement that will sit easily next to singles by the likes of Talulah Gosh, Shop Assistants, The Pastels and The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. It's really that good - a sure thing to enter the canon of perennial indiepop floor-fillers. On the b-side we have the heavier "I'll Never Understand," a slow, trippy song with a slightly-delic sound that builds to a noisy crescendo. About Revenge Vol. 1: A veteran of the rap scene in Calgary, AB, The Dirty Sample believed he didn’t have another vocal album in him, so he killed off his MC alias Apeface in 2018 on Ape No More. But the ape drags his ass out of the grave as the bigger, badder Ol’ Gorilla Bones. It’s time for a new beginning, and with songs like “Revenge on the Mind”, “The Murderers”, and “The Reaper”, Revenge Vol. 1 is predicated on vengeance. OGB’s vocals are raw and raspy, but with a laidback delivery that makes sense after hearing weed anthem “Death Bubba”. The Dirty Sample maintains the theme of the album with production both dark and ugly. As rapper and producer, the beats are specifically catered to his liking, with Rob Roy and frequent collaborator Touch as the only guests. OGB is back from the dead and no wack, clown shoe rapper is safe. About The Dirty Sample: The Dirty Sample has been producing and rapping for over 15 years in a cave hidden somewhere deep in the Kootenays. Or so they say. The one sure thing is how he got his name. “I love the crackle and the crunch of dirty vinyl,” explains the elusive Northwest silverback of his DJ Muggs-like fascination with dusty vinyl first discovered after buying a sampler in ’98 to construct the beats his then 3-year-old rapper alter ego, Planit, wasn’t receiving from other producers. Now, 30+ albums in, he has a catalogue that includes instrumental works, remix projects, and collaborations with the likes of Roc Marciano, Guilty Simpson, Myka 9, Kirby Dominant, Moka Only, D-Sisive, Merkules, Snak the Ripper, Touch, and many of your other favourite rappers. His biggest hit to date is Raw Produce, the compilation album he produced and released on Phonographique in 2015. Raw Produce received positive features from XXL, Mass Appeal, Complex, 2DopeBoyz, and elsewhere, thanks to key single “Three Sixty Five” with Roc Marciano. The Dirty Sample has released albums with a variety of alter egos, including Planit, Apeface, Crash Silverback, 2 Blue Apes, and most recently, Ol’ Gorilla Bones..
